SHAWNIGAN LAKE SCHOOL
DONOR REPORT 2015–2016
“
I am the recipient of bursaries and scholarships that have allowed me to experience the opportunities that Shawnigan has to offer. There is no doubt in my mind that the School has helped to shape the adult that I want to become. One day, I hope that I can help change a student’s life for the better, simply because they will have the opportunity to attend Shawnigan Lake School.

HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE
“
A strong, second-century Shawnigan will strive to make itself worthy of your continued passion and support.
P
hilanthropy is most often an emotive experience based on a passionate belief in something. At its purest, it seeks to help a valid organization or entity or ideal to thrive, and it is hugely rewarding for both donor and recipient. I would like to think that the past three years have been uplifting for our supporters, as their support has indeed been hugely rewarding for all of us at the School. The results of our Centennial Campaign speak for themselves, and the details of what our donors have permitted us to achieve are well captured and documented. In many ways, therefore, my task is a simple one: to acknowledge all of the incredible support that we have enjoyed and to thank all of the people whose names appear in this report. Any campaign needs leadership, and I would like to recognize the drive, passion and energy that Bob Murdoch brought to our Centennial Campaign. Bob’s commitment to our success continues now, but has already been a crucial factor in our achievements so far. Similarly, I want to single out the passion of Jim and Kathryn Shaw. Every campaign needs a transformational gift to spark it into life, and the magnificent library that bears their name did just that for Shawnigan. The impact of that superb new learning space on all who cross its threshold is very tangible, and is a superb testimony to the commitment to quality that our School represents. Jim and Kathryn “changed the game” for us, and their library will do so for generations of young people at Shawnigan. 2
”
The other statistic that often gets overlooked when we talk about philanthropic support is the huge increase in our scholarship and bursary funds. We have already surpassed our endowment goal for this campaign, but in the realm of providing opportunities for students to be at Shawnigan and to fully partake in all the experiences that the School provides, enough is never enough. This area will be a crucial aspect of our School in this next century, as it is the only way that we will be able to keep it accessible to the many great young people who would both benefit from Shawnigan and bring much to it. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped the School in any way, and to all of those groups and individuals whose names are captured in the following pages. A strong secondcentury Shawnigan will strive to make itself worthy of your continued passion and support. — David Robertson, Headmaster
CHAIR’S MESSAGE
“
The School has survived and prospered thanks to the commitment and dedication of the Shawnigan family, and will continue to do so in ways we today can only imagine.
A
”
s we approach the end of our Centennial celebrations, we can reflect with pride on some great achievements. Through the focused efforts of a number of people — particularly Bob Murdoch and his Campaign Cabinet (David Schieldrop, Brian Mitchell, David Robertson and Rudy Massimo) — along with the tremendous support of parents, alumni and Governors, we have achieved a record level of financial support for the School. In total, more than $46 million has been committed to the School since the campaign commenced in 2012. This generosity has allowed us to undertake a veritable transformation of our campus. In the last four years, we have completed the construction of Renfrew House, the upgrading of two other dorms, the complete reinvention of the 90-year-old Main Building, plus a superb ice arena, a state-of-the-art recording studio and the installation of a new water-based field hockey turf. These are tremendous accomplishments and we should be proud of the School’s aspirations under Headmaster David Robertson in undertaking these challenges. We should be equally proud of the Shawnigan family’s progress in delivering on them. However, as David would remind us frequently, it takes more than a nice building to make a successful program, and there is still work to be done to complete the financing of these projects. As we move into 2017, we will continue our focus on our very successful Annual Fund, and on our efforts to solicit capital contributions to defer the remaining shortfall of costs incurred on projects completed to date.
Shawnigan is unique in the Canadian boarding school context, particularly in the composition and balance of our student body. With the highest number and the highest percentage of boarders in the country, our blend of students from all corners of the world is not an easy balance to achieve and to maintain. Our commitment to making the School accessible to as many qualified students as possible is a very important objective, and the key driver in our desire to build our endowment. Increasing our ability to offer needs-based financial aid is considered by the leadership of the School to be an important priority that will receive continued attention, along with facility renewal and programmatic enhancements — all second only to the financial stability of the School. We made several bold commitments and, as a result of the tremendous support of staff, alumni and parent donors, we are well through the most difficult portion of the financial challenge presented by those commitments. We will, however, remain diligent in managing the School’s affairs. The School has survived and prospered thanks to the commitment and dedication of the Shawnigan family, and will continue to do so in ways we can only imagine today. I ask you to continue to offer your support in the ways you choose, as investments in Shawnigan Lake School are truly investments in our future. — Matt Brister, Chair of the Board of Governors 3

FOUNDATION REPORT
T
his was a very exciting year for Shawnigan Lake School and the Foundation. The Foundation received approximately $9.7 million in donations (cash) to support capital, endowment, scholarships, bursaries and school activities in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2016. This is the largest amount ever received by the Foundation in a given year. As part of this total, the Annual Fund campaign raised more than $1 million again this year. We continue to be inspired by the spirit of philanthropy that is growing in our Shawnigan community. The construction costs related to the Learning Commons, which includes the new Jim & Kathryn Shaw Library, are expected to total $27 million. To date, we have received pledges of more than $22 million, but reaching our goal will depend on the final support and commitment we receive from the entire Shawnigan community. As I have said many times before, it is all about participation. We hope you will join us in the final stages of the campaign. We are counting on the broader Shawnigan community to help close the funding gap. While our office continues to lead the charge to complete the Centennial Campaign, for the past few years we have also been busily planning events and memorabilia for 2016. We feel there was something for everyone from all Shawnigan eras to enjoy in celebrating this important milestone for our School. Centennial highlights included: The Official Opening of the Centennial, April 30. Dignitaries in attendance included the Honourable Judith Guichon, OBC, the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, and
6
Dr. Stephen Spurr, the Headmaster Emeritus of Westminster School, which is the alma mater of Shawnigan founder Mr. C.W. Lonsdale. The official opening of the Jim & Kathryn Shaw Library, May 25. A celebration with students, faculty and friends, the opening honoured Jim and Kathryn Shaw’s magnificent gift and their ongoing support of the Shaw Scholarships. The opening had a festival feeling, with food trucks and music in the Quad. Centennial Rugby Festival, June 10–11. Weekend activities included a golf tournament at Bear Mountain Resort and a number of select rugby games. The first two DHL games were played in Nov. 1990 and Sept. 1991 to commemorate Shawnigan’s 75th anniversary. We were delighted that the showcase game in our Centennial year honoured that tradition. The DHL XV team was coached by Ian Hyde-Lay ’75. The Rugby Festival ended with a Rugby Club dinner in Marion Hall, with rugby legend Sir Gareth Edwards in attendance. Founder’s Day, Oct. 22. The Centennial Founder’s Day included a special chapel service, rowing festival and historical displays. Alumni returned from all corners of the world to see the revealing of the Peter D. Yates Wall of Distinction. When I think of the successes we achieved in the past year, it is without question thanks to the incredible amount of time, energy and effort of so many people in our community. A big thank you goes out to our parents, faculty, staff, students, and the Board of Governors of the School and Foundation for their ongoing commitment and support.

CAMPAIGN LEADERSHIP
ROBERT MURDOCH ’60 (LAKE’S)
B
ob Murdoch has held some impressive positions in his life, but he’ll tell you some of his favourite memories come from his time playing for the 1st XV at Shawnigan, and the lifelong friendships he created there. For Murdoch, Shawnigan was a life-changing experience – one that showed him that the world was a bigger place and that there were greater opportunities out there for him. “If you’ve got a skill set, Shawnigan finds it,” he says. “And that develops your self-confidence.” After a life of international business and politics, Murdoch returned to his alma mater to serve on the board and eventually chair Shawnigan’s Centennial Campaign. “This is the most beautiful place in the world,” he says. “Whenever I leave Shawnigan I always feel happier than when I arrived.” That’s not to suggest that the Centennial Campaign was a mere curtain call or walk down memory lane. Under Murdoch, the Board of Governors set aggressive goals, including a $41.5
million campaign that is just a couple of million dollars away from completion. “I think we have a shot at making the total by the end of the year,” he says. “For a small school, that’s an outstanding performance.” He points to Jim and Kathryn Shaw as among the most generous and pivotal figures in the campaign, and believes that without their leadership and the work of David Robertson and Rudy Massimo, the library would not have been built. Murdoch says he has loved his time on the board, in part because it keeps him connected to younger people and younger issues. “Shawnigan’s a happier school now than when I was there,” he says. With a major rebuild nearing its completion, Murdoch is looking forward to enhancing the student experience and building on the School’s endowment so that it’s more affordable to more people. “We don’t have as far to go as the improvement we’ve made,” he says. “I think we should be the best 500-student school in the world.”
OUR LEAD DONORS
J
im Shaw ’77 (Lonsdale’s) first arrived at Shawnigan in September of 1975, as he embarked on his Grade 11 year. At that time, his father operated a small cable start-up in Edmonton known as the Capital Cable Television Company. Jim survived the first few months at Shawnigan — a difficult period of adjustment for any student — and soon began to thrive. “The first thing you learn at Shawnigan is how to live with others,” he says. “You also learn to set goals and achieve them.” After graduation, Jim worked a variety of odd jobs until his father JR Shaw finally convinced him to join the family business. Working his way up from Victoria cable installer to president, Jim spearheaded deals that turned Shaw Communications into Canada’s largest cable and broadcasting company. Since then, Shaw has remained deeply involved in the School, including serving two terms on the Board of Governors. In 1999, his family was proud to open the Shaw Centre for the Sciences. Shortly thereafter, the Shaws initiated a new scholarship
program that has provided the opportunity of a Shawnigan education to many more young people. His wife Kathryn, a current Board member and parent, says the Shaw Scholarship program will always progress in different ways. “When we first met, it was at five. Last year we were at 17 scholarships. I’m very influential,” she laughs. “Can you tell?” The jewel in the crown of Shawnigan’s new Learning Commons opened in the spring of 2016, thanks directly to the historic support of Jim and Kathryn. The Jim & Kathryn Shaw Library is a spacious marvel that has been a hive of activity since its festive Grand Opening. For Jim Shaw, the motivation is simply about providing opportunities for individual young people, for the School and for Canada. “It’s about providing quality education and experience through those formative years.”
JIM SHAW ’77 (LONSDALE’S)
ANDREW PURDEY
T
he youngest of eight children from a Manitoba farming family, Andrew Purdey first got exposed to Shawnigan when his son Seth joined the Grade 8 class. The original plan was for Seth to join his sister at Brentwood College School in Grade 9, but as the academic and athletic possibilities began to open at Shawnigan, the plans soon changed. Seth enjoyed his Grade 8 experience and wanted to continue at Shawnigan. Andrew Purdey could see the limitations within the minor hockey system, particularly for an athlete at boarding school. Speaking with other parents, Purdey imagined not only a shortterm solution, but a golden opportunity to begin something special at Shawnigan. He felt that a new ice arena would be a tremendous asset for the School and for the community at large, and would help build more of a connection between the two. “It came at a risk,” he admits. However, when Purdey saw the Canucks Prospects Camp first arrive at Shawnigan in the
summer of 2015, he knew the payoff had materialized. The camp was open to the community to come watch the prospects play. As Purdey explains, “Coach Desjardins walked through the doors, and there was a mob of kids — they all rode their bikes from various parts of the community — they all gang-tackled him to get his autograph. They were all playing mini-sticks and then they hopped on their bikes to head home. And that night, they all dreamed about hockey.” For Purdey, naming Shawnigan’s new arena after his late brother Charlie was a natural step. He describes his brother as a simple man who overcame significant obstacles to create a good life for himself and his family. Andrew says that his brother would be thrilled to see young people of all different backgrounds given the same chances. “It all aligns with what I think is important,” he says. “No matter who you are, when you walk in here, everybody has the same opportunity.”

ANNUAL FUND REPORT
T
hank you only begins to describe our gratitude for your generosity. You have made a tremendous impact on the lives of Shawnigan students. Last year, the support of the Shawnigan family totalled more than $1 million. Your contributions funded financial assistance, the Headmaster’s Fund, academics, athletics, fine arts and other co-curricular activities. Every donation makes a significant difference in the lives of our students. Students make our School, and we are fortunate to have such a diverse population. It is because of your support to the financial assistance program that we are able to attract and retain such an inspiring group of young people. With close to one-third of our students receiving some form of financial assistance, you are supporting those who otherwise could not attend the School, making Shawnigan available to the best and most deserving students. While you have a number of choices to designate your giving, the Headmaster’s Fund is the most flexible, enabling the Headmaster to
18
allocate financial resources to the most immediate and urgent needs. Last year, this meant providing 169 students with either a scholarship or a bursary. Your support made an impact in many areas: sending 100 athletes on tours, five students on an EDGE service trip and 10 students on either the physics or robotics trip, buying 600 hymnals for the Chapel, purchasing uniforms for 10 students, buying the equipment needed to build and install a barbecue area for a boarding house and so much more. It takes all of us to make a difference, and Shawnigan is a better place because of your generosity! Our School — your School — would not be the same without you! Your support to the Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our efforts. Together, we will continue to provide challenging academics, first-class sporting opportunities, comprehensive exposure to the fine arts and community-enhanced programs — all in pursuit of cultivating well-rounded, welleducated young people of character. Thank you for your dedication and continued loyalty!

My Annual Fund gift always goes toward financial aid. Through my gift, it is especially meaningful to help a student experience the wonders of a Shawnigan Ski Week. As a former student, this outdoor community experience was pivotal in helping me to make Shawnigan my home away from home. Now as a teacher, and passionate organizer of Ski Week, I help in any way I can to ensure that others can have a similar transformational experience.
