Alumni Updates Kyle Fredrickson '17 (Lonsdale's) Kyle was born with bilateral club feet. His first cast was put on when he was only two weeks old and every week it had to be replaced with a bigger one to keep up with his growing body. From the time he was born until his last corrective surgery in grade 1 he had three full left leg surgeries and two full right leg surgeries. In grade 4, having overcome these initial physical challenges, Kyle started rowing. He says this early start to the sport is common in Europe, but not here in North America. The sport was ingrained in him from a young age, so when he came to Shawnigan in grade 8 he was ready to jump into competition. He went to St. Catherine's that year, and every other year after during his 5 years at Shawnigan (something only ever done by a few others). Today, Kyle is in his first year of Business at UVic. Not only is he on the men's varsity team, but in January he became a carded athlete (one of the youngest in Canada) on the Paralympic National Rowing Team, something he describes as "one of the coolest things in my whole life." He now has access to a vast array of resources, such as the Pacific Institute of Sports Excellence, receives a great deal of support from Coach Aalbert Van Schothorst, and gets to train with role models in the field, such as Rio bronze medal winner Andrew Todd. Speaking of training, Kyle currently trains 14 times a week, which includes time on the water, erging, and weight training. This busy schedule doesn't leave much time for a social life, but he tries to get out to swim and bike on his own to "keep sane." This year he's hoping to travel with the team to at least one of three world cups, either in Italy, Bulgaria, or Serbia. The biggest goal currently keeping him motivated: Tokyo 2020. He is also eager to help the School design and implement its new strategic plan to strengthen the rowing program, as he has seen what amazing things are possible here on our lake when the program is flourishing. Kyle feels extremely privileged to have had the opportunities he did at Shawnigan to take his rowing to this high level, and is eager to give back to the community as a way of saying thank you. He recently came to speak to grade 11 and 12 student as part of their Career Day. We wish you the best of luck, Kyle!

Tony Cape '01 (Ripley's) and Carly Cape (formerly Overton) '00 (Groves') "Carly and I are thrilled to welcome another son, Jack, to our family. Older siblings Will (6), Rosie (5), and Maggie (2) are also pumped, albeit a tad disinterested given his general lack of activity to this point! Jack has been a blessing (perhaps due to said lack of activity) and we're grateful to him for making the jump to a family of 6 a seamless one. We're currently living just north of Chicago and enjoying suburban life‐‐it's not quite Shawnigan but it's nice to be a few blocks from the lake. I've been working at Bain and Company for the past 8 years, largely consulting to clients in the Industrials space, while Carly does an amazing job holding down the fort at home! " Congratulations on your new arrival!
Don't miss out on this opportunity to be a part of this special gift for the Robertsons! We are looking for stories and photos of the Robertsons from the last 25 years to include in a commemorative gift book for them. Did you play Colts rugby? Were you in a boarding house with Suzanne '97, Russell '99 or Struan '06? Perhaps you enjoyed a particular chapel address or inspirational quote by Mr. Robertson? Maybe you had a memorable disciplinary run‐in? Please send all submissions to Nicole Ronald‐Jones at nronald‐jones@shawnigan.ca.
The Admissions team is hitting the road! We would greatly appreciate you thinking about any families you know in the areas below that may be interested in learning more about Shawnigan and meeting with an Admissions representative in person.
They may contact Sarah Nattrass at snattrass@shawnigan.ca for more information and to book their individual appointments. Thanks for your help getting the word out!
