HEADMASTER’S MESSAGE

““

Thank you for your wonderful support and commitment to the School and to the next generation of Shawnigan students.

I

was hugely fortunate to be awarded a bursary mid-way through my studies at Winchester College, England, when my father, a surgeon, fell unexpectedly ill. I was unaware at the time of my status as a student receiving financial support to complete my studies; my parents have since informed me that a combination of the Headmaster, donors to Winchester College and the Royal Medical Foundation stepped forward to offer support. I remain deeply grateful. I know that my father has chosen, through his will, to make a donation to Winchester College in order to ‘pay forward’ for another student to benefit from a bursary as his younger son did. Shawnigan's commitment to providing 40% of its students with financial assistance was the single most influencing factor in my decision to take up the position of Headmaster at Shawnigan. This donor report speaks of Shawnigan supporters - governors, alumni, parents, current and former staff and many others - who have stepped forward to support the development of the School. Your generosity helps us accomplish important progress with our programs, whilst advancing access and socio-economic diversity of the student population. This term, we have established a Financial Aid Committee tasked with the responsibility of distributing Founder's Awards (financial assistance) to families in genuine need in order to enable students of potential to contribute to and benefit from a wide-range of programs as part of the Shawnigan 'well-rounded' education.

Thank you for your wonderful support and commitment to the School and to the next generation of Shawnigan students. You are contributing to Shawnigan's future and helping us shape the ethical community-builders of tomorrow. In gratitude and with very best wishes,

Richard D. A. Lamont Headmaster 2

THANK YOU

W

ith this donor report, we sincerely thank the many members of the Shawnigan community whose generous contributions have supported the School this past year. We also want to take a moment to recognize one donor who gave so selflessly to our School: In January 2018, our community was saddened to learn that Jim Shaw had passed away. A member of the Class of 1977, Jim served for eight years on the School's Board of Governors. His contributions to Shawnigan, including the Shaw Scholarship Program, the Shaw Centre for Science, and the Jim & Kathryn Shaw Library, forever changed the face of the School. We gratefully recognize the dedication and effort of our Boards of Governors and directors of the School and the Foundation. We also want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the consistent efforts of our volunteers and the generous support we receive from our current parents, past parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends. This past fiscal year, the Foundation received $5.4 million in cash donations to support capital projects, endowments, school activities, scholarships, and bursaries. Included in the overall total, last year's Annual Fund campaign raised approximately $1.1 million. Your generosity is making a true and lasting difference in the lives of all our students. Thank you again!

T

Rudy Massimo Director of External Relations & Advancement

Your generosity is making a true and lasting difference in the lives of all our students.

he Annual Fund provides over $1M of philanthropic support per year for myriad elements of Shawnigan's well-rounded education, from classrooms to sports teams and boarding houses to bursaries.

Philanthropy is an essential ingredient in our school's success, and we are proud to thank over 500 Annual Fund donors each year. Parents, alumni, past parents, and friends spanning a wide range of ages, geographic distribution, and financial capacity provide support that allows us to maximize our positive impact on the lives of promising young people. Our donors all convey the same collective message: We believe in Shawnigan.

Greg Stevenson Director of Development

Philanthropy is an essential ingredient in our school's success.

7

This year, our Annual Fund theme is 'Opening the Doors of Opportunity' emphasizing the critical role that annual giving plays in a Shawnigan education whether through financial assistance for families that would otherwise be unable to afford tuition, or through funding for the special elements found in so many of our programs. We hope you will join our community of donors as we strive to increase access for promising girls and boys to live the transformative educational experiences that we provide. Thank you to all of the donors that have already helped us provide such exceptional opportunities to our students. Your continuing support is key to our success

THE HEADMASTER'S GALA Lynn and I found Shawnigan 25 years ago and it has been a profoundly significant part of our lives ever since. I know that it has had the same effect on so many others and I want to take one more opportunity to thank you all for your support of the School over the years. We would also like to recognize and thank all the members of the Shawnigan community who generously supported the Headmaster's Gala and the Robertson Family Scholarship this past spring by becoming a sponsor, donating auction items, purchasing auction items, purchasing event tickets, and donating directly to the scholarship fund. I hope that we all look around proudly at what can be achieved when a school pulls together to be the very best that it can be and that we are all excited by the bright future that lies ahead. Our collective legacy will always be the school of tomorrow for these fortunate young people of whom we are so proud. Thank you again for your wonderful commitment to Shawnigan. David Robertson
