Perhaps one of the oldest pieces of parental advice that many of us received when we were young was that “if you’re going to do something, do it well”. That commitment to quality has set the tone for everything that we do at the School, but more particularly, for the Hockey program since its recent inception as a ‘flagship sport’. As the current steward of this fine institution, I am very proud of the way that our coaches, players, parents and staff have embraced the essential ethos of the School. We are definitely very much on the right track in incorporating a first-class hockey experience into a Shawnigan education. The disciplines, values and the healthy development that any reasonably intense involvement with sport can bring a young person are invaluable and an absolutely key ingredient of a complete education. That is something that I would wish for anyone and something that we can all engineer if we approach all of these opportunities in the right way. The real value of sport lies in engaging the hearts and minds of all who become involved. Ultimately, the sport becomes merely the vehicle that carries the person on to success and fulfillment in life. That’s what we wish for our teams and all the individuals in them. If the Shawnigan Hockey experience proves to be meaningful and significant for all who have anything to do with it then we will all have accomplished our mission. For my part, I remain delighted by the progress that we are making. My best wishes to all,

— David Robertson Headmaster, Shawnigan Lake School

My role was to create, design, and lead a high level hockey program, making it one of the finest in Canada. After one year of building and development, our team entered the Canadian Sports School Hockey League and won our division with a perfect record. Last season, we entered two more teams at the elite level. This momentum is carrying our program forward as this September we are proud to have our first female ice hockey team in the CSHHL. I am a believer in “what’s past is prologue.” My own experiences at New Hampton Prep School and Middlebury College taught me to be accountable through hard work. From this, I had the opportunity to bring a high-performance ice hockey program to Shawnigan and have it reflect our mission statement. This exciting journey, though brief, is a recent addition to the school’s one hundred year old rich history in developing our community, one member at a time, by following the pursuit of personal excellence. We are fortunate at Shawnigan Lake School to provide our student athletes with a unique exposure to high level academics, sport, and fine arts. Our players work hard within their multiple roles, whether in the classroom, on the ice, or in the gym to ensure our school’s values are clearly reflected in their actions. To have success, we all must share the vision and contribute. I want to thank teachers, house directors, transportation, and kitchen staff, who put in many extra hours of care to ensure our program runs smoothly. I also am very grateful to our rink facility staff. I personally thank our parents and young student athletes for choosing Shawnigan. “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” — Pelé

— Kevin Cooper Director of Hockey, Shawnigan Lake School

Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat Let the rewards go to those who worked to deserve them. The Shawnigan Athletic program is one of the essential areas that makes up the Shawnigan student experience. Our belief in the athletic potential of all students allows our coaches to challenge our athletes and push them to levels that they may have thought unattainable. We believe that sport is about the process leading up to competition and, if this process is thoroughly completed then the outcome will be a positive one. We believe having natural athletic ability does not guarantee success — character does. Hard work and commitment along with teamwork are the mainstays of our program. In addition, personal accountability, respect for others, and a positive approach form the character of a true Shawnigan athlete. In competition we learn how to accept success with humility and defeat with grace; we learn individual responsibility and teamwork; we learn that respect for the other team and the rules of the game make us stronger opponents. There is nothing quite like the thrill of a closely fought competition between two equally fierce teams. And there is nothing that can replace the learning that takes place through the challenge of competitive sport. Finally, we believe strongly in the principle of the multi-sport experience for our students. Not only will these different experiences keep our students fresh and challenged, but there are many crossover skills and qualities that will help them to be successful in any athletic endeavour. I feel that following quote from Mr. David Robertson, the school’s Headmaster, best sums the philosophy of Shawnigan Athletics: “The duration of an athletic contest is only a few minutes, while the training for it may take many weeks of arduous work and the continuous exercise of self-effort. The real value of sport is not in the actual game played in the limelight of applause but in the hours of dogged determination and self-discipline carried out alone, imposed and supervised by an exacting conscience. The applause soon dies away, the prize is left behind, but the character you build up is yours forever.”

— Tim Murdy Director of Sport, Shawnigan Lake School

Our Midget Prep, Varsity and Bantam Prep teams compete in the prestigious Canadian Sport Schools Hockey League. The CSSHL was created in 2009 and includes teams from British Columbia, Alberta and Idaho. It was grown from five sport schools to 13 across six divisions: U18 Prep, U18 Varsity, Elite 15s, Bantam Prep, Bantam Varsity and Female. The CSSHL was specifically designed to enable like-minded players increased level of competition and exposure. The league’s mandate is to provide student athletes with a high-level hockey experience complimenting their academic commitments. Each team plays 25-35 league games and playoffs to determine the final standings for the season. Games are scheduled to minimize school conflicts. Despite a relatively short existence, the CSSHL has already produced seven players selected in the National Hockey League draft and two alumni who have competed in the NHL: Mathew Dumba of the Minnesota Wild and Curtis Lazar of the Ottawa Senators. More than 60 former players have continued to play Major Junior hockey and 16 earned scholarships to NCAA Division I programs. In addition to their CSSHL fixtures, teams also compete in a number of tournaments throughout the season of play. At Shawnigan, we try to have all competitive teams travel out east in Canada or to the U.S. competing against elite private schools and U18, U16 and U14 teams. This provides students with an enhanced hockey experience and greater exposure to NCAA programs. In 201516, the Midget Prep team was invited to the prestigious 33rd Annual MacPherson Hockey Tournament. This is the premier Midget U18 tournament in the country with teams from New York, Pennsylvania, Quebec, Saskatchewan, B.C. and Ontario.

She was a standout player, winning many awards, including, a two time finalist for the prestigious Patty Kazmaeir Award, given to the top player in US College hockey, Rookie of the Year, Ivy league and ECAC Player of the Year and named to the All American Team. During her college career, she was a two sport athlete, playing both hockey and softball. In 2002, Haggard was named the Dartmouth Female Athlete of the Year. Haggard also played for the Canadian Under 22 National Team for three years, where she competed in several international challenges. She trained and mentored girls of all ages and levels in their hockey careers. Many of these young players went on to play college hockey. Combining her two passions for travel and hockey, Carly played professional hockey in HC Lugano, Switzerland, where she was named the league’s MVP both seasons. Carly led her team to two league championships and two appearances at the European Cup championships. After retiring, Carly began her coaching career. Haggard did two seasons as an assistant coach with the University of Guelph Gryphon’s women’s hockey team. Carly took over as the interim head coach for the 2011-12 season, where they had the best record in school history with 18 wins. Carly is also a certified fitness trainer.
