Ten years ago, Alexander Duran and his brother Edward, were among the first to see the potential in a long-neglected stretch of waterfront property here, directly across the river from New York City. It was that vision, along with the Durans' business savvy and hard work, that led to the birth of their highly popular Son Cubano restaurant – now celebrating its 10th anniversary – as well as the transformation of the area, known as Port Imperial, into one of New Jersey’s most desirable waterfront locations, featuring luxury apartments, boutique hotels, celebrity-chef restaurants and a spectacular view of the New York City skyline.

DOL OFFERING $3M IN GRANTS FOR NJ PLACE 2.0 DEGREE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

NJ PLACE 2.0 was launched last year as a program intended to give thousands of residents the education and resources they need to secure good-paying jobs while supporting employers who need to be connected to skilled talent. On Tuesday, the Department of Labor & Workforce Development announced there is now $3 million in grant funding available to help encourage the development of degree apprenticeship structures that integrate paid on-the-job learning with credit-bearing classroom education. Degree apprenticeship programs developed under the NJ PLACE 2.0 grant allow student apprentices to earn college credits and an apprentice wage at the same time — thus removing the difficult choice between working to support themselves or attending classes to further their career.

NJEDA ANNOUNCES $2 MILLION MICRO LENDER SUPPORT GRANT PROGRAM

TRENTON, N.J. (March 10, 2021) – The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) Board of Directors today approved the creation of the Micro Lender Support Grant Program. This $2 million pilot program will make grant funding available to organizations that lend to New Jersey small and micro businesses. These funds will help eligible entities by supporting the costs associated with scaling up their operations and offering direct assistance to New Jersey-based businesses. This is critical now as the COVID-19 pandemic has created overwhelming need among micro businesses. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the NJEDA has provided more than $250 million in support for small businesses and communities that have faced economic hardship. The Authority has provided a total of $11.25 million in support to New Jersey-based Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) that specifically target financing to underserved markets and populations. This includes a $10 million allocation for the CDFI Loan Loss Reserve Fund and $1.25 million in grant funding through the CDFI Emergency Assistance Grant Program. To date, these programs have enabled New Jerseybased CDFIs to provide more than $8 million in financing to 349 small and micro businesses throughout the state. The pilot program approved today builds on this success by providing additional funding and expanding the pool of potential partners the NJEDA can partner with going forward.
