SPAQuality We’ve always known that Bath was a special place. Turns out we’re not alone – readers voted it their favourite UK city in the 2013 Guardian and Observer Travel Awards. There are countless reasons why Bath is the ultimate leisure destination, but here are eight to get you started

EXPERIENCE COUNTS People have been getting into hot water in Bath for millennia. It was the Romans who first saw its potential as a leisure destination. In AD 43 they set about building a ‘sanctuary of rest and relaxation’ here – a place they called Aquae Sulis. Nearly 2,000 years later, we’re still the place to be if you’re after some proper R&R.

IT COMES NATURALLY The naturally hot springs bubbling deep within the earth have been Bath’s lifeblood throughout its history – and they’re as important today as they ever were. State-of-the-art Thermae Bath Spa employs this ancient geological gift to create a thoroughly modern indulgence – from delicately scented steam rooms to a warm rooftop pool with spectacular views across the city.

WE’VE GOT GREAT TASTE We’re a famously foodie city, so you’re never far from the next gastronomic experience – everything from farmers’ markets bulging with field-fresh produce to five-star restaurants and cosy cafés serving meals made with Bath-tastic local

ingredients. Check out the annual Great Bath Feast for a taste of what’s on offer.

STATE OF INDEPENDENTS This isn’t Anytown, UK. You’ll come across our sense of individuality throughout the city. It’s in the specialist shops and boutiques offering truly unique one-of-a-kind items. It’s in our privately run hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses and our many independent eateries where good food is a given. We like to do things our own way. We think you will too.

WE’VE GOT HISTORY Bath is the only city in the UK to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s easy to see why. Our compact centre is a living museum, crowded with architectural wonders left by our Roman and Georgian ancestors. A short walk here spans centuries of fascinating heritage.

ONE OF A KIND This year sees the opening of the new Gainsborough Bath Spa – the UK’s only natural thermal

spa hotel. Nestled behind an elegant Georgian façade in the centre of town, The Gainsborough promises the last word in luxury. Featuring natural thermal pools, ice chamber, treatment rooms and even an apothecary. It’s a truly unique hotel spa experience.

A PASSION FOR FASHION This is a city with a real sense of style. With its combination of big fashion names and individual artisans creating must-have one-of-a-kind items, our shopping scene rivals anywhere in the UK. But it goes further than just retail therapy. Our annual Bath in Fashion week is an unmissable event for any serious fashionista.

BY GEORGE! This year is the 300th anniversary of the beginning of the Georgian era – and there’s no better place than Bath to relive the spirit of the age. Visit No 1 Royal Crescent to experience Georgian life behind closed doors, see period styles at the Fashion Museum or sink your teeth into a delicious Bath Bun – one of the Georgians’ great culinary achievements.

IT TAKES

Two

In Bath, the finer things in life – inspiring architecture, gourmet grub and high fashion – are a big part of the equation. For Food and Travel Magazine editor Guy Woodward and his wife, it all adds up to a delicious couple’s break

The Fashion Museum

There’s a small, cobbled square in Bath that sums up the city’s appeal. Nestled in a quiet enclave around the back of the baths themselves, you’ll find Abbey Green – home to an old plane tree, a pub, wooden gift specialist Timber Treasures and the rather wonderful, family-run Retro Store. As we mooched around the latter, an Aladdin’s cave of nostalgia, we noticed something. People were smiling. Not just that, but they were smiling at each other. Coming from London, this was something of a novelty to us. But it’s a scene you’ll

encounter a lot in Bath – it’s that kind of place. In fact this dinky, buzzing store could act as a metaphor for the whole city.

Abbey Green

Easily navigable, but with lots to take in; relaxed in its skin but fizzing with

an independent spirit, Bath makes a rewarding break for couples. Its compact, characterful heart means that just padding around the streets is a pleasure in itself. History runs through its veins, permeating every corner, but it’s a history that sits comfortably alongside a modern, vibrant feel. There’s an essential itinerary to be drawn up, of course, taking in the key sites. Certainly first time visitors will want to make time for the magnificence of the Abbey, the charm of the Royal Crescent, and the wonder of Roman innovation

that gave the city its name. But one of the great pleasures of Bath is just meandering around and seeing where it takes you. Chances are you’ll soon stumble onto something of interest, for chief among the city’s draws is the fact that no one place is too far from another. Hence you can afford not to be too beholden to your street map, but rather follow your nose, safe in the knowledge that if you get lost: a) it might not be a bad thing; and b) it won’t be difficult to revert to the plan.

The Francis Hotel

We came armed with a checklist of sites and managed to tick most of them off over a weekend that never threatened to venture anywhere beyond a sedate pace. It helps staying in the centre of town, of course, and The Francis Hotel is one of several reasonably priced options perfectly placed at the heart of the action. Whether the breakfast at all these options is as satisfying and stamina-inducing as at The Francis, I can’t say, but if it is, you won’t have to worry about eating again until dinner.

Bath is not a city in which you’ll go hungry. We’d barely made it 200 yards out of the hotel before we were hoovering up samples from the Fine Cheese Co’s cheese festival at Milsom Place, one of many rather stylish arcades offering a clutch of boutiques, eateries and events that will have you whiling away an hour without noticing it.

BATH IS RELAXED IN ITS SKIN BUT FIZZING WITH INDEPENDENT SPIRIT We were similarly distracted on our way to the Fashion Museum, waylaid by the charms of Bartlett Street, with its antique centre and personalitypacked home stores – including another food stop-off, Café Lucca. Set within the contemporary lifestyle store Loft, it’s perfect for perusing the papers on a weekend. The museum itself chronicles fashion across the ages, via a stunning collection of dresses and other outfits. Several of these immediately transported us to another era, or, in the case of the now-50-year-old Dress of the Year section, had us dreaming of being kitted out by Alexander McQueen or Karl Lagerfeld (and yes, there are dressing up options for those so inclined). The Assembly Rooms

The Fine Cheese Co Festival at Milsom Place

Editing a food magazine for a living, though, it’s my job to worry about where the next meal is coming from. I needn’t have been concerned.

Green Park Station Vintage and Antiques Market

In a similar vein, if less choreographed, is the twice-monthly vintage and antiques market at Green Park Station. Fashion, furniture, jewellery, art and vinyl are among the items on sale, the latter a particular spark for memories of my youth – though my wife’s tastes as a 12-year-old were very different, it seems!

The Roman Baths

Other museums and attractions go much further back in history for their inspiration, of course, none more so than the Roman Baths themselves (and yes, here too their adjacent Kitchen and bar is a worthy stop-off for any rumbling stomachs). The appeal of the baths is obvious, and has been documented far more worthily than I could ever manage here. Suffice to say it’s one of those places where, as we shuffled around, rapt in the fact-filled commentary emanating from our headsets, we shared countless raised eyebrows and gobsmacked poses as we tried to reconcile the endless startling details Book online at visitbath.co.uk 3

being distilled to us with the primacy of the 2,000-year-old environment of which we were now a part. No 1 Royal Crescent

on display at the Holburne Museum, or the Georgian splendour of the Royal Crescent. A visit to No 1 Royal Crescent gave us a glimpse into refined Bath life as it was lived more than two centuries ago, while a most delicious afternoon tea at the Royal Crescent Hotel prolonged the Regency feel – after which we imagined ourselves stepping out onto the crescent and into our horse and carriage. It was an indulgent move, and those less predisposed to vanity will find equally good offerings at Bea’s Vintage Tea Rooms on Bartlett St and Sally Lunn’s just off Abbey Green.

Bath’s long history can also be seen in the magnificent Abbey. It dominates the city, and provided, for us, the perfect encapsulation of what makes Bath such a special place: beauty, substance and understated elegance. Such qualities abound here, whether it’s in the work of Jane Austen (the walking tours from the Jane Austen Centre, or downloadable on visitbath.co.uk come highly recommended), the period artwork

Bath Rugby − The Rec

Sotto Sotto

Good hospitality abounds in Bath. We’d arrived on the Friday of the city’s match with rugby rivals Gloucester, which, with the stadium also bang in the middle of the city, made for a lively atmosphere for early evening drinks. Bath is a rugby city, and the clubby, chummy feel that sets rugby apart from football is entirely in keeping with the convivial vibe we experienced all weekend. Following a simple but elegant Italian meal at Sotto Sotto, we merrily rubbed shoulders with fans of both sides in The Salamander and The Raven, two pubs within a lineout’s throw of each other, both serving real ale in authentic, gimmick-free surroundings.

WE IMAGINED OURSELVES STEPPING OUT INTO OUR HORSE & CARRIAGE 4 The Official Bath App – free from iTunes and the Play Store

The Circus

The following evening, having promised my wife there’d be no more sport that weekend, we returned to the same street for drinks at Hall & Woodhouse, a happy find made more so by the unpretentious expertise of the staff. We were on our way to dinner at Gascoyne Place, whose fine modern British cuisine belies its relaxed, informal setting. Indeed throughout the weekend, our only disappointment was not being able to take in a greater array of eateries recommended by foodie friends. Casanis and The Olive Tree are both on our list for next time. The Hare & Hounds

AS JANE AUSTEN KNEW WELL, WALKING IS ONE OF THE GREAT PLEASURES OF BATH, AND THERE WASN’T ONE MOMENT DURING THE WEEKEND WHEN WE MISSED THE CAR Come Sunday lunchtime, we resolved to make a token effort at counteracting our calorific intake by walking a mile out of town up the hill for a stonking lunch (yes, I know) and fantastic views at the Hare and Hounds. It’s one of three pubs under the same ownership and the less energetic will be pleased to find that the other two, The Marlborough Tavern and The Chequers, are back in town. As Jane Austen knew well, walking is one of the great pleasures of Bath, and there wasn’t a moment during the weekend when we missed the use of a car (or even a bus, for that matter).

That feeling of freedom is best summed up by a print that is now hanging in our front room, bought from one of the many quirky galleries around the city. It’s a simple sketch of The Circus, with the Georgian townhouses in the background. ‘Bath’s North Circular’ runs the caption. If only all cities were mapped out in such a way.

A WORLD

Heritage Walk

Time travel is easy in Bath. A stroll around our city centre is a journey through centuries of history. No wonder it’s the only entire city in the UK to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bath Guide Editor Huw Thomas puts his best foot forward on a walk through time

1 QUEEN SQUARE A short walk from the Isambard Kingdom Brunel-designed Bath Spa station brings me to this inviting, leafy square. It’s a small space that’s big on Bath history. Jane Austen once lived here and the stone obelisk in the centre was erected by the city’s famously dandy Master of Ceremonies Beau Nash. What’s more, the row of houses at the north of the square was built by celebrated architect John Wood the Elder in 1728, the first of his many great works in Bath.

2

GRAVEL WALK

More Austen. Any fan of the writer’s work will be familiar with Gravel Walk, which provided the backdrop for a memorable scene between Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth in Persuasion. Skirting the edge of Victoria Park, it was once a popular promenade for Georgian high society – a place to see and be seen. Even though the ladies and gentlemen in their finery are long gone, it’s easy to imagine myself as a character in one of Austen’s novels as I stroll along.

ROYAL CRESCENT

3 I emerge from the Gravel Walk to the green lawns in front of one of the city’s most famous architectural set pieces. And it’s not just the architecture. The lush green surroundings provide a superb vantage point from which to drink in the sheer splendour of this Bath icon. Designed by John Wood the Younger, the golden arc of 30 terraced townhouses was created to give well-to-do residents the feel of country life in an urban setting. It maintains an air of rural serenity today, despite its proximity to Bath’s bustling city centre.

NO 1 ROYAL CRESCENT Heading back towards town along the Crescent’s elegant façade, I arrive at No 1 Royal Crescent (no1royalcrescent.org.uk). Now a living museum, the house has been lovingly restored to how it looked in Bath’s Georgian heyday. From the plush master bedroom – complete with four-poster bed – to the cosy kitchens below stairs, it’s a revealing glimpse into what life was like at one of the city’s y most desirable addresses.

4

5

THE CIRCUS

6

A walk down Brock Street brings me to another of John Wood the Elder’s architectural marvels. Inspired by classical Roman design and British pagan sites like Stonehenge, it remains an awe-inspiring 360-degree sight. It also boasts an impressive list of former residents: artist Thomas Gainsborough once lived at number 17, William Pitt the Elder at number seven and Lord Clive of India at number 14.

THE ASSEMBLY ROOMS

There can be few better choices for a quick refreshment stop than the café at the Assembly Rooms, another favourite haunt of Jane Austen. This was where the great and good of Georgian society would gather to dance, gamble and drink tea – then an expensive luxury available only to Bath’s elite. The tea’s much more affordable these days, but time has done nothing to diminish the Assembly Rooms’ grandeur. Book online at visitbath.co.uk 11

A short climb up Lansdown Road and a sharp descent down steep Guinea Lane brings me out onto this sweep of 21 smart Georgian townhouses – once one of the key gateways into the city. Perhaps the most eye-catching building is the striking Countess of Huntingdon’s Chapel, a rare example of gothic revival architecture in a sea of classical design. It’s now home to the Building of Bath Collection (buildingofbathcollection.org.uk), which tells the fascinating story of Bath’s architectural transformation from quiet provincial town to fashionable Georgian resort.

THE PARAGON

7

PULTENEY BRIDGE I cross the River Avon in style via another of Bath’s architectural jewels. Lined on both sides with shops selling everything from freshly baked cakes to antique maps, you’d need to travel to Venice or Florence to see another bridge like it.

8

HOLBURNE MUSEUM

9

Great Pulteney Street – the longest and widest Georgian street in the city – leads me to the Holburne Museum (holburne.org). It’s a dazzling cornucopia of intriguing exhibits, where contemporary art rubs shoulders with a massive collection of artefacts (miniature coral carvings, Roman coins, ornate antique furniture) gathered by the magpie-like Sir Thomas William Holburne. The museum’s café – set in a modern extension of glass and steel to the rear of the building – is also an excellent place to stop and rest my feet.

lburne Museum

SYDNEY GARDENS Behind the Holburne I find an unexpected oasis of calm just a stone’s throw from the city centre. The gardens were another favourite of Jane Austen, who once lived across the road at 4 Sydney Place. It’s pretty tranquil now, but in Austen’s day the gardens were a buzzing venue for entertainments like picnics, concerts and firework displays.

BATH ABBEY

11

There’s been a place of worship here in one form or another since Saxon times. Today’s Abbey owes much of its splendour to Sir George Gilbert Scott, who transformed its interior in the 19th century with the addition of a magnificent vaulted stone ceiling. The Abbey’s early days haven’t been forgotten though. A spectacular stained-glass window depicts the coronation of King Edgar, which took place here in AD 973. (bathabbey.org)

12 Just enough time to visit this most ancient of Bath’s World Heritage wonders (romanbaths.co.uk). Drawn by the naturally hot spring waters, the Romans set up shop here in AD 43 and stayed for nearly 400 years. It’s easy to see why. Interactive displays show how central the baths were in the daily lives of our Roman predecessors, while the gently steaming waters look as inviting now as they must have done back then. I’m tempted to sample them myself with a post-walk dip at nearby Thermae Bath Spa (thermaebathspa.com), but I have a train to catch and I’m not really equipped. FOOTNOTES Compact Bath is a city designed to be explored on foot. Nothing is more than a short walk from the centre. And should you feel like a change from pounding the pavements, strap on your boots for an invigorating journey round the Bath Skyline Walk. Located just outside the centre of town, this six-mile circular route takes you through the lush and inviting countryside that lies at Bath’s fringes. You won’t be saying goodbye to Bath completely though – the walk offers awe-inspiring views across our World Heritage Site cityscape.

AVEBURY Size matters Though it may not have the immediate impact of Stonehenge, Avebury’s Neolithic monument has its own claim to fame. Measuring almost 1,500 feet in diameter, it’s the world’s largest stone circle – and a World Heritage Site to boot.

RIDE AND SEEK We’re big believers in bikes. Ours is a cycle-friendly city, so saddling up and heading out on two wheels is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to get around. Try the recently opened Two Tunnels Greenway, one of our cycling crown jewels. Following former railway lines, the route takes you through Combe Downs’ Tunnel, the longest cycling tunnel in Britain. Visit the picture postcard square of Abbey Green, a short step from the Roman Baths Museum. Frequently used as a film set the Square has few reminders of the modern world. The buildings and the beautiful tree are much the same as they were when a young Jane Austen wandered past them in the 1800s. Nestling under the tree in the far corner of the Square is TimberTreasures. Everything it sells is handmade in or from wood. It is a locally-owned family business and offers high quality service helping customers browse the beautiful range of gifts, carvings, kitchen and garden ware all at very reasonable prices. Many gifts are designed by the owner. He still makes some of the gifts himself (if you get lucky you'll even find the ones he signs or brands). Even more of his ideas are outsourced to local and foreign artisans which helps give the shop its fascinating appeal. If you like the smell, touch and look of wood walk under the big tree into the shop – you'll love it! GOURMET BURGER KITCHEN MAP: F5 60 8 Brunel Square, Bath, BA1 1SX T: +44 (0)1225 471057 E: info@gbk.co.uk www.gbk.co.uk

Back in 2001, three kiwi guys set up the first Gourmet Burger Kitchen in Battersea, South London. Their philosophy was simple ˛ to create a fresh, quality burger reminiscent of the gourmet burgers they were used to back in New Zealand. Working with Chef Peter Gordon, they were the first to introduce gourmet burgers to the London market, creating a menu that combined 100% beef with the freshest ingredients and sauces. These days we serve up gourmet burgers from London to Cardiff, Edinburgh to Brighton. We opened in Bath in December 2012, and you«ll find us situated in The Vaults, amid Brunel«s railway arches and overlooking the open Piazza. We still pride ourselves on serving up the freshest burgers; combining 100% beef sourced from West Country farms with the freshest ingredients and sauces made from scratch every day in each GBK kitchen.

Two AA rosettes, a clutch of local & national awards plus inclusions in The Michelin Guide and Good Food Guide bear testimony to the quality of both food and service. It's no wonder they've won the Bath Gastropub of the Year title more than any other. Food is essentially, though not lavishly English in character and takes advantage of locally sourced produce wherever possible. The lunchtime menu features a range of lighter dishes and sharing plates plus some traditional pub classics - and the Sunday roasts are legendary. Their food reputation is matched by their service - always friendly and attentive without being intrusive.
