Bath is, quite simply, a city built for pleasure. Back in the first century AD, the Romans constructed a sophisticated bathing complex here on the site of thermal springs, and developed Aquae Sulis as somewhere for recreation. Some 1,700 years later, the Georgians followed suit. Leading architects of the day created an elegant resort out of the local honeycoloured stone, and life revolved around socialising, dancing, card playing and "taking the waters".

Fast forward to the 21st century, and you'll find the Roman Baths and the harmonious Georgian crescents, squares and terraces still very much in evidence. Such is their architectural and historical importance, Bath is the sole UNESCO World Heritage city in the UK. Meanwhile, at Thermae Bath Spa, you can continue the millenniaold tradition of wallowing in the city's mineral-rich, warm waters – something you'll also be able to do across the street at the Gainsborough Bath Spa when this eagerly-anticipated five-star hotel opens in Spring 2015.

But don't for one moment think of Bath as some fusty spa town. The Bath of today has a contemporary vibe, and it is packed with excellent, multi-ethnic restaurants, vibrant pubs and cafés, and a fabulous mix of independent shops and top high-street names. Adding to the city's buzz is an impressive annual roster of events and festivals – covering everything from literature, music and fashion to the month-long Great Bath Feast and ever-popular Bath Christmas Market.

So we Bathonians think our little old Bath is rather special in many different ways. But

don't rely just on our opinion. In the 2013 Guardian and Observer Travel Awards, readers voted Bath their favourite UK city, and in Condé Nast Traveller's 2014 Readers' Travel Awards, Bath was ranked the best small UK city. There were also gongs for Bath in 2014 from TripAdvisor: the influential review website which named the Roman Baths as the top-rated museum in the UK outside London, and picked out Bath hotels and B&Bs as being among the top 10 in the country. Come and decide for yourself what's special about Bath.

The Royal Crescent

1 For an architectural feast With a staggering 5,000 listed buildings, Bath has the most impressive showcase of Georgian architecture anywhere in the country. Don't miss the stately Royal Crescent and Circus, and wherever you wander, look out for eye-catching flourishes such as grandiose neo-classical pillars, pedimented doorways and wrought-iron boot scrapers.

2 To follow in Jane Austen's footsteps

3 For the Roman Baths With steaming baths, hypocaust (underfloor heating) systems, and the remains of the temple to Sulis Minerva, Bath's most popular attraction is a strong contender for the UK's most fascinating Roman site – for visitors of any age. After dusk, the baths are lit by torches and are particularly atmospheric.

4 To bathe in thermal waters Follow in the (bare) footsteps of Romans and Georgians by having a soak in Bath's naturally warm spring waters. Thermae Bath Spa's open-air rooftop pool is magical any time of year, but especially on a chilly winter's evening.

'Come during the annual Jane Austen Festival for the Grand Regency Costumed Promenade'

5 For romance With the Spa being just the place for couples to spend some relaxation time together, three quarters of the city's hotels offering four-poster beds, and no shortage of intimate places to dine à deux, Bath ticks all the boxes for an amorous getaway. See the Love Bath section of visitbath. co.uk for how to arrange the perfect romantic weekend – including where to pop the question.

For a fashion fix

For afternoon tea

For quirky museums

Shopping for fashion has been a feature of Bath since Georgian times. Nowadays, the city offers a winning combination of independent designer boutiques and leading high-street brands. If you're around on the first and last Sundays of the month, have a rummage at the Vintage & Antiques Market in Green Park Station.

Bath has some splendidly refined places for traditional afternoon tea. At The Pump Room, you may be entertained by a pianist or string trio as you tuck in to your scones, sandwiches and cakes. Several hotels, including The Royal Crescent Hotel, also do excellent teas with all the trimmings.

We've got 17 museums! As well as big hitters such as the Roman Baths and the Holburne (a superlative collection of fine and decorative art), you'll find lesserknown museums dedicated to Americana, architecture, astronomy, Asian art, fashion, stamp collecting...

Bath Rugby

11 For the lively – or CIVILISED nightlife The city has a large student population, so nights out in sophisticated little old Bath can be surprisingly lively – particularly at weekends. There are trendy cocktail bars and clubs where you can glam it up, but also wonderfully unchanged West Country pubs to take things easy over a pint or two.

12

15 For THE Farmers' Market

13 To watch a rugby match Bath is oval ball territory. The city's premiership rugby team is currently one of the finest in England, and the stadium – The Rec – is bang in the centre: when the home team scores a try, the roar of the crowd reverberates right across city. The atmosphere at games is usually very good natured (off the pitch, anyway).

Graze and stock up on delicious, seasonal local produce at the UK's longest-established farmers' market. It takes place every Saturday morning in Green Park Station, a handsome former Victorian railway station. Somerset cheeses are among the highlights.

16 For historic parks We've got lots of lovely green spaces for a stroll or picnic. The most popular is Royal Victoria Park: overlooked by The Royal Crescent, it has a fine botanical garden, fab children's playground and, late November to early January, an icerink. Other smaller parks include Sydney Gardens, a fascinating Georgian "pleasure garden".

For the lovely For memorable countryside on places to stay YOUR doorstep In Bath and its environs, you're spoilt One of the prime things we residents love about living in Bath is that our city doesn't sprawl – rather, it's abruptly fringed by woods and fields. SOAKING UP THE From its many museums and art galleries to diverse theatre offerings and festivals, Bath offers a huge variety of cultural experiences to grab the attention of visitors young and old. As The Daily Telegraph recently put it: "The city is a maelstrom of cultural activity"...

Little Bath manages to pack in more museums – 17 at the last count – than a host of cities many times its size. The one that all first-time visitors really must visit is the award-winning Roman Baths. Encompassing much more than just the steaming hot baths, the complex includes interactive displays and finds – mosaics, urns, statues, gravestones – from Aquae Sulis, the town that grew up around the hot springs. Don't miss the Beau Street Hoard, a collection of over 17,000 silver Roman coins discovered in Bath by archaeologists in 2007, which is being put on display in 2015. Other museums provide fascinating insights in to Georgian Bath. No 1 Royal Crescent, recently restored to reunite its aristocratic wing with the

below-stairs servants' quarters, lets you step back into 18th century life. At the Jane Austen Centre on Gay Street, you can gen up on where the famous author lived in Bath, how the city was depicted in her novels – and stock up on Keep Calm and Read Jane Austen tea towels and I Love Darcy stickers in the gift shop. Over on the Paragon at the Museum of Bath Architecture (formerly called the Building of Bath Collection), models and maps provide a revealing introduction to the design of Georgian buildings and the transformation of the city in the 18th century. In the basement of the Assembly Rooms you'll find the Fashion Museum, a world-class collection of changing styles from the 16th century through to the present day. Throughout 2015, an exhibition

8 The Official Bath App – free from iTunes and the Play Store

on the Georgians showcases richly-patterned dresses, robes and waistcoats from the period. Architecture and art fuse memorably at the Bath's leading art gallery, the Holburne Museum. The grand, neoclassical building in Sydney Gardens is the perfect home for beautifully displayed paintings, silver, sculpture, porcelain and furniture, based around a collection created in the 1800s by Bathonian Sir William Holburne. There are also excellent exhibitions – on Turner's watercolours through to the spring of 2015 – lunchtime concerts, lectures, workshops for adults and children, and a classy café in the striking modern extension. Art lovers should also make a beeline for the Museum of East Asian Art on Bennett Street – the many intricatelycarved jade pieces, including animal

figurines, are a highlight. Also check out what's on at the Victoria Art Gallery: in 2015, its exhibitions cover everything from Beryl Cook to Canaletto and Venice. Bath's museums include a number of unexpected gems. On New King Street there's the fascinating Herschel Museum of Astronomy in the Georgian home of William Herschel, telescope maker and discoverer in 1781 of Uranus. At the Bath Postal Museum on Northgate Street, you can learn about how the first mailing of the world's first postage stamp, the Penny Black, took place in Bath on 2 May 1840. Over at the Museum of Bath at Work on Julian Road, the workshops of a now-defunct local soft-drinks manufacturer are painstakingly reconstructed in an 18th century Real Tennis Court! Also well worth a visit on the outskirts of Bath is the American Museum in Britain. As well as an outstanding quilt collection and Folk Art gallery, the manor house sits in lovely grounds overlooking the Limpley Stoke Valley – it's a great place for a wander and afternoon tea.

Virtually any night of the year, you'll find high-quality entertainment in Bath. The Theatre Royal offers a rich and varied programme of drama, musicals, opera, concerts and much else besides in beautiful Georgian surroundings, along with professional children's shows in the egg theatre. Also find out what's on at the more alternative Chapel Arts Centre, head to Komedia for a night in the company of household-name stand-up comedians, and catch a film at the independent Little Theatre Cinema.

Added to which is Bath's roll-call of long-established cultural festivals. These are important annual fixtures in the city, and attract top writers and performers. They include the Bath Literature Festival in late February/ early March, Bath International Music Festival in May, the Children’s Literature Festival in late September/ early October, and the Mozartfest and Film Festival in November. For more details, see page 24-25.

"Bath is so much more than a living museum. It's a real centre for contemporary culture. Our three major festivals (Literature, Music and Children's Literature) punctuate the calendar year in spring, early summer and autumn. The Forum showcases great music acts year round. The Theatre Royal has an eclectic and ambitious programme. I’ve seen some of the best comedy and cabarets acts around at Komedia, one of my favourite comedy venues in the UK. Add to that the most beautifully preserved 1930s cinema imaginable – The Little Theatre Cinema – and, really, you’ve got the lot." Viv Groskop, Artistic Director of the Bath Literature Festival "Thinking Bath? Thinking Jane Austen, Roman remains and Georgian splendour? Think again. Think Bath world class centre for design, IT and digital technology, its Digital Festival proclaiming ‘less Romans, more Robots!’. Think rootsy music at Chapel Arts and the legendary Bell in Walcot St. Think new drama at the egg, Ustinov and Rondo theatres and the fabled Natural Theatre Company. Think contemporary art with Fringe Arts Bath, 44AD Gallery, the ICIA plus the city's long-founded galleries. Explore off the beaten track and experience a city that is truly ‘beautifully inventive'." When it comes to retail therapy, Bath really does offer it all. What makes shopping in our compact city centre so distinctive is that as well as the expected high-street brands, we have an amazing number of independent stores, selling items you won't find anywhere else. We also offer the ultimate antidote to bland, mall-centric shopping: here in Bath, most of our shops are spread around elegant Georgian streets, and are integral to the fabric of the city. Here are some brief tasters of what to find in the city's main shopping areas.

Central area Running down through Bath’s retail centre are bustling Stall Street and Union Street, with buskers and stalls and stores ranging from Primark to The Roman Baths shop – great for Bath-themed gifts. Do also explore off the main drag. North of the Abbey lies a grid of shop-lined, narrow pedestrian lanes and The Corridor, an ornate Regency arcade. South of the Abbey, around cobbled Abbey Green and its environs, is equally pretty – chocolatier Charlotte Brunswick on Church Street has very tempting treats.

Conveniently located across the street from the train and bus station, modern SouthGate is as close as the city gets to a shopping centre. But because it’s in Bath, it’s all very tasteful and stylish, with Georgianstyled buildings set around an open-air piazza. Big-name brands – Debenhams, The Apple Store, Urban Outfitters, Topshop, H&M, Fat Face to name a few – predominate. But the odd independent can also be found such as My Small World, a delightful toy store for young children.

Milsom area

SouthGate Apple Store

Upper town Hidden gems can be found in the tranquil Georgian streets north of George Street. If you’re a bookworm, do pay a visit to Topping & Company on The Paragon, a wonderfully civilised, independent bookshop that makes you question whether to buy a book online ever again. On traffic-free Bartlett Street, stop off for a browse of the dozens

of curio-filled cabinets in the Bartlett Street Antiques Centre, and drop in on The Loft, a gorgeous-looking “concept store” whose Italian café is invariably packed with ladies who lunch. Then make your way through The Circus to Margaret’s Buildings, a delightful pedestrian lane with a sprinkling of art galleries, antique shops and boutiques such as Liz Cox, purveyor of finelycrafted handbags.

Bath is indisputably fashionable – we hold an annual Bath in Fashion week, and even have a Fashion Museum! The Milsom area is the city’s style-conscious heartland. On the elegant Georgian sweep that is Milsom Street, there are cutting-edge boutiques such as boot and shoe specialist Duo, as well as venerable and newly revamped Jolly’s: dating from 1831, it is the UK’s oldest department store. The street segues in to New Bond Street, where highlights include Bloomsbury, a fun treasure trove of designconscious gifts, Seasalt, the uplifting Cornish fashion and lifestyle brand, and Anthropologie, with its creative displays of eye-catching clothing, pottery, jewellery and furnishings. Don’t overlook Milsom Place, hidden between Milsom and Broad streets. Dotted around its interconnected courtyards and passageways are two dozen sophisticated boutiques, cafés and enticing delis (Carluccio’s and Jamie’s). At the Broad Street entrance, Robert Welch sells exquisitely designed cutlery and kitchen knives.

voices "Bath offers a fantastic, and unique, shopping experience. When I chat to my customers about how they are enjoying their visit, they frequently tell me how lucky we are to have retained such a variety of independent shops, and what a vibrant atmosphere they create. The city is a paradise for shoppers because you can take time out relaxing in delightful cafés and tearooms and wandering in to galleries, museums and beautiful gardens, with everything just a short stroll away. And wherever you are, there’s the city’s magnificent Georgian architecture to admire."

Walcot Street This street is the focal point of what is known as Bath’s Artisan Quarter. It’s lined with an interesting hotchpotch of interior design and antique showrooms, clothes’ boutiques (vintage, hats, you name it) and charity shops. With 100 varieties of hand-made cheeses and various posh bickies – plus a lovely café attached – The Fine Cheese Co is also a big draw.

Markets Bath’s main market area is the covered Green Park Station, just west of the city centre. On Saturday mornings, the former railway station hosts the thriving Bath Farmers’ Market, with stalls selling delicious local produce (free tastings often encouraged!). On the first and last Sundays of the month the Vintage & Antiques Market sets up shop, while on the second Sunday of the month the attention switches to locally-made ceramics, jewellery, cushions and candles on sale at the Bath Artisan Market.

In the run-up to Christmas, the picturesque squares and streets around the Abbey and Roman Baths host one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets anywhere in the UK.

Imren Lowin, Owner of vintage clothing shop Vintage to Vogue "Shopping is an important part of any visit to Bath. The city is walkable and compact, and each and every street – whether a grand parade, fashionable highway or quirky lane – has its own character. As one of the most stylish cities in Europe, Bath attracts aspirational stores like Anthropologie, The Kooples, Whistles and Reiss, plus creative and very individual independents specialising in homewares, fashion, jewellery, books, wine and cheese – as well as the major brands we all need and love." Hot Spa, Cool Bath

Thermae Bath Spa

Bath is a prime destination for a restorative break. This has in fact been the case since time immemorial, thanks to the three springs beneath the city that produce over a million litres of hot, mineral-rich water each day. The said waters have been attracting visitors to Bath ever since Prince Bladud, father of Shakespeare's King Lear, was cured of leprosy by bathing

here in 863 AD. Well, that's according to legend. But it's a fact that Celts, Romans, Saxons, Normans and Georgians have all benefitted from and enjoyed Bath's health-giving and relaxing natural, thermal waters – just as you can today at the stateof-the-art Thermae Bath Spa. The UK's only natural thermal spa is a winning combination of old and new right in the heart of

14 The Official Bath App – free from iTunes and the Play Store

the city, its Georgian buildings blending with the striking contemporary design of the glass-encased New Royal Bath. Echoing how the nearby Roman Baths were very much a social hub for all-comers, Thermae Bath Spa is not an exclusive, hushed set-up. Rather, it's a social place to come with a loved one or group of friends, to lounge around, chat or simply relax.

Sessions at the New Royal Bath include access to two thermal pools. The large and curvaceous indoor Minerva Bath, set around mushroom-like columns, has massage jets and a "lazy river", while the open-air rooftop pool basks in fantastic views across the city. You can also visit steam rooms in glass pods infused with aromas such as eucalyptus, frankincense and lemongrass and ginger. The steam rooms and pools stay open until 9pm, and the outdoor pool is particularly special after dark, whether on a balmy summer's evening or chill winter's night. Bear in mind that New Royal Bath sessions are very popular – Tuesdays to Thursdays tend to be more peaceful – and unless you're in a group of eight or more, bookings are not possible.

The Gainsborough Bath Spa

Thermae Bath Spa offers other memorable experiences. For something more intimate than the New Royal Bath, consider a session in the separate, open-air Cross Bath. A sacred site fed by its visible, own natural spring and enclosed within a restored Grade 1 listed Georgian building, it makes an unforgettable venue for a private group (up to 12 people). Lucknam Park

'An indulgent break in Bath is about much more than just spa time' You can also book an extensive selection of spa treatments. These range from traditional massages, facials and Hot Stone therapies to the spa's signature Watsu (water shiatsu) treatment, which involves being gently stretched, swished and massaged by a therapist in the thermal waters in the private Georgian Hot Bath. Packages are available combining treatments and spa sessions, with the option of a meal in your spa robes in the attractive, on-site Springs Café Restaurant. Spa treats in Bath aren't limited to Thermae Bath Spa. When the Gainsborough Bath Spa, a five-star hotel occupying imposing Georgian buildings just across the street from Thermae, opens in spring 2015, it will be the only place to stay in Britain with direct access to natural thermal waters. Along with treatment rooms,

saunas and steam rooms, the Gainsborough's Spa Village will have a colonnaded Romanesque Bath House with three thermal pools set under a glass atrium, and in several of the hotel's bedrooms you'll even be able to fill your bathtub with the thermal waters. You can also be pampered in the spas of The Royal Crescent Hotel, Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel and Bath Priory Hotel, and, in Bath's environs, the country-house hotels of Homewood Park, Lucknam Park and Woolley Grange all have luxury spas too. At all of these spas, sessions and treatments are on offer to non-residents as well as hotel guests. But an indulgent break in Bath is about much more than just spa time. The city has a sophisticated eating and drinking scene, and you'll be spoilt for choice for nationally-acclaimed restaurants and gastropubs, genteel places for full-blown traditional afternoon tea, and voguish cocktail bars. Moreover, if you want to treat yourself to retail, as well as spa therapy, Bath is a shoppers' delight. Everywhere in the compact centre is in walking distance, and pottering around the elegant Georgian streets and hidden passageways browsing in one-of-a-kind independent boutiques and leading high-street stores, is one of the key pleasures Bath has to offer. Richard Bertinet

Bath is for

foodies Here's why we think Bath is something of a paradise for lovers of good food. Our foodie credentials are rooted in the fact that we have an abundance of top-quality West Country produce – meat, fruit and veg, cheeses (not just Cheddar!) – on our doorstep. In many of our restaurants, pubs and cafés, chefs make a point of using locally-sourced, seasonal food, and it's no coincidence that we can lay claim to having the oldest farmers' market in the country. We are also home to much-lauded cookery schools run by French baker and chef Richard Bertinet and Rachel Demuth, a pioneer of all things vegetarian.

16 The Official Bath App – free from iTunes and the Play Store

In October, we hold The Great Bath Feast, an annual celebration of all things to do with food (and drink). Throughout the month, there are tastings and demonstrations and special bargain menus at many restaurants. It's primarily a local affair, but some big-name chefs and cookery writers from out of town make appearances too. Whenever you come to Bath – and whatever your tastes and budget – you can eat extremely well.

We have our share of branches of celebrity chef restaurants, such as Jamie's Italian, Brasserie Blanc and Carluccio's. But what is so distinctive about Bath's dining scene is the number of outstanding independent places to eat that are unique to the city. If you want to push the boat out, book a table at The Bath Priory: for the past three years, chef Sam Moody's modern British cooking has earned the hotel's restaurant a much-coveted Michelin star. Other hotel restaurants in the city centre serving excellent contemporary British cuisine include Allium Brasserie at The Abbey Hotel and The Olive Tree at The Queensberry – both have three AA rosettes. For a special meal, also consider Menu Gordon Jones. Selected as South West Restaurant of the Year in the 2015 Waitrose Good Food Guide awards, Gordon treats his diners to "surprise" dailychanging menus. Looking for more informal dining? Bath also excels when it comes to pubs serving great food. Those very much deserving of "gastropub" status, with local ingredients to the fore, include The Garrick's Head, King William, Hop Pole, Chequers, Malborough Tavern and Hare & Hounds. They are just the place

for a traditional roast, as well as more creative dishes. If you want to diverge from British fare, Bath offers a vast choice of alternatives, from intimate French bistros, fun Italian trattorie and buzzing Spanish tapas bars, to superior Indian restaurants and even a Nepalese eatery – the splendidly named Yak Yeti Yak. We also have an ever-growing number of cosy, passionately-run cafés dotted around the city centre, that make for perfect pit-stops when out browsing the shops and sightseeing. Many offer afternoon tea. For a classic Bath experience, tuck in to home-made sandwiches, scones and cake at the ever-so elegant Pump Room, while being entertained by musicians – and be sure to sample a glass of the health-giving but yucky-tasting hot spa water from the fountain. The Pump Room was a key social focal point in Bath in the Georgian era, and one of the most enjoyable things about eating out in Bath is the historic premises you often find yourself in – maybe a timber-beamed pub, a beautifully proportioned room of an 18th century town house, or a vaulted basement that extends right under the city's pavements.

Great Bath Feast: Bartender of the Year

Getting in the Bath spirit Whether you want a night on the town or a quiet pint, we've got some memorable places for a drink or two. Cool hangouts for cocktails include: Sub 13, an award-winning, subterranean bar where the bartenders really know their stuff; the stylish lounge bar at The Porter,

a gorgeously restored Georgian townhouse; and the Canary Gin Bar, where you can choose from dozens of speciality gins – don't just ask for a G&T! If you're after a traditional boozer, among many options in Bath there's the quirky Star Inn, with its cosy little Victorian-styled panelled rooms, and the diminutive Coeur de Lion, Bath's smallest pub; order a pint of the

hoppy Bellringer, brewed right here in the city by Abbey Ales. For live music, The Bell Inn, owned by over 500 of its regulars, is the place to go. For somewhere more contemporary in feel, try Hall & Woodhouse, a dramatic conversion of auction rooms. Last but not least, you should try some Somerset cider: sample a few brands from the dozens on offer at The Stable.

Local voices "In the last few years, the Bath food scene has flourished. We have seen the arrival of a host of new independent restaurants, cafés and bars, the development of local brewers and distillers (Bath Gin anyone?), and the growth of local artisan food suppliers. We are spoilt for choice for fantastic small restaurants like Same Same But Different, Yammo!, Sam's Kitchen and Casanis; for brilliant cafés like Society Café, Café Lucca at The Loft and Made by Ben; for amazing farm shops nearby in Neston Park and Newton Farm; for great hotels with a focus on food such as the Abbey, and THE PIG - near Bath which celebrates local suppliers; and for pubs like the Garrick's Head where the food is the star. It is a joy to work and cook here." Richard Bertinet, owner of The Bertinet Bakery and The Bertinet Kitchen cookery school

For a small city, Bath has a great variety of small, independent food retailers and restaurants. One of my favourite places to shop is at the Farmers' Market in Green Park Station on Saturday mornings. I always find something to inspire me from the range of locally-produced vegetables, fruit, chutneys, bread and cheeses – we feature local producers at our popular Bath on a Plate cookery class. Being a vegetarian myself, I am delighted how well vegetarian and vegan diners are served in Bath. Personal favourites include the Acorn Vegetarian Kitchen for fine dining and The Green Rocket, Chapel Arts and Metropolitan cafés for lunch.

“Bath’s got some outstanding fine dining restaurants, including, of course, one from our amazing team at The Bath Priory. But what I really love about the city is the variety of the great places to eat. Favourites of mine include the King William pub for locallysourced food and beer, Hoi Faan for fantastic dim sum, and the Firehouse Rotisserie, whose spit-roasted chicken is simple and delicious." (IN JUST 24 HOURS) Visiting Bath for just a short time? No problem. We have carefully selected some of the best museums, restaurants and sites the city has to offer and meticulously planned your 24 hours in Bath tick tock, tick tock...

Roman origins

The Roman Baths (romanbaths.co.uk) are the perfect place to start exploring. The remarkably elaborate bathing and temple complex was built around 70 AD above natural hot springs that are the city's raison d'être. There's a lot to take in, but all is brilliantly explained by the engaging audio tours (one is especially designed for children), and brought to life by actors in the roles of Roman characters and film projections of scenes from Roman life.

COFFEE BREAK

triple-decked, Palladian tour de force was Britain's first circular street – its design and layout were influenced by Stonehenge and Rome's Colosseum. Look at the carved arts and crafts motifs on the houses’ facades. Many famous residents have lived in The Circus, including Nicolas Cage. For more social history take a free tour with the Mayor's Honorary Guides (bathguides.org.uk).

High Georgian society Bennett Street leads to the Assembly Rooms (bathvenues. co.uk/Assembly-rooms). In Georgian times, its elegant Ballroom, Tea Room and Octagon were the meeting places for Bath society. Virtually destroyed by bombs in 1942, the building is a triumph of sensitive restoration.

Lunch in style

It's back to the centre for a meal at Clayton's Kitchen at The Porter (15A George Street; theporter. co.uk). This stylish but casual restaurant, in a handsome Georgian townhouse, is one of the best restaurants to have opened in Bath in recent years. Clayton's Kitchen

Walk the length of Great Pulteney Street – Bath's most impressive Georgian thoroughfare – to the Holburne (holburne.org). Built in 1796, the palatial mansion, now with a strikingly modern glass and ceramic extension, contains a nationally significant collection of fine and decorative art that ranges from Renaissance treasures to masterpieces by Thomas Gainsborough. Entrance is free, though there is usually a charge for the excellent temporary exhibitions.

Double back through The Circus and along Brock Street to Bath's top architectural showpiece, The Royal Crescent. To see how the Georgian gentry and their servants lived, pop in to recently-renovated No 1 Royal Crescent (no1royalcrescent. org.uk): its rooms are meticulously furnished in the style of the period. By the way, the middle houses are occupied, very discreetly, by The Royal Crescent Hotel (royalcrescent.co.uk) – an ideal base for a luxury break.

Dating from 1482, Sally Lunn's Historic Eating House (4 North Parade Passage; sallylunns.co.uk) is the oldest building in Bath. Sample a generously-proportioned Sally Lunn Bun: the famous local delicacy is a bit like a brioche, and can be eaten with sweet or savoury toppings.

HIDDEN BATH Bath resident and travel writer Fred Mawer reveals some of his favourite lesser-known places in and around the city.

Georgian Bath

Views and walks

The Royal Crescent isn’t the only crescent in Bath – there are, in fact, seven. In my opinion, the prettiest is Lansdown Crescent. Including convex terraces on each flank, the ensemble snakes along a hillside, and, rather beguilingly, looks over a grassy slope often grazed by sheep.

For the best view of Bath within the city centre, sign up for Bath Abbey’s Tower Tours (bathabbey. org/towertours). From the tower’s roof, you can see in to the Roman Baths and across to the steaming pool atop Thermae Bath Spa.

If we have friends to stay who are curious to learn more about Georgian Bath, I sometimes take them to the underrated Museum of Bath Architecture (buildingofbathcollection.org.uk) in the lovely Countess of Huntingdon’s Chapel on The Paragon. Several displays focus on details easily overlooked when you’re wandering the streets, such as how doorways vary on otherwise uniform terraces, and how the showy Georgians didn’t really care how the backs of their houses looked (they are often a mishmash). Just beyond The Paragon stands St Swithin’s (stswithinswalcot.org.uk), Bath’s only remaining 18th century parish church. With classical pillars, gallery and Georgian-era marble memorial tablets coating the walls, its interior is a delight – and Austenophiles should note that Jane’s father, George, was buried in the church.

Of the many superlative vistas right across Bath, my favourite is from Alexandra Park, at the summit of a wooded escarpment called Beechen Cliff. Laid out below you like a 3-D model is a panorama of the city’s golden-hued buildings. A long flight of steps called Jacob’s Ladder climbs to the park from Holloway. For a flat stroll, wander along the Kennet and Avon Canal from Widcombe out to the George Inn at Bathampton. En route, you’ll pass enviable houses with boat moorings at the bottom of their gardens, and go through little tunnels and under elegant, wrought-iron Georgian footbridges. For more serious exercise, the Mawer family regularly climbs Solsbury Hill from the village of Batheaston. Once an Iron Age fort, the flat-topped hill provided inspiration for the first solo single of local music maestro Peter Gabriel. We find the 360-degree views

from the top rather inspiring too, and in summer the meadow is alive with the sound of singing skylarks.

Snacks and cafEs

‘superlative vistas right across Bath’

For the best take-away treats in town – quiches, sausage rolls, croissants, brownies – or a worldclass loaf of bread, pop in to one of the two branches of The Bertinet Bakery (bertinet.com/ bertinetbakery). For Bath’s best ice-cream, look no further than The Real Italian Ice-Cream Company (therealitalianicecreamcompany.weebly.com): its gelato is made on the premises, and can be eaten Italian-style in a tub, as well as a cone. For excellent salads and home-baked goodies, settle in to Sam’s Kitchen (samskitchendeli.co.uk). The laid-back café has the feel of someone’s private kitchen/lounge, and fits in perfectly on bohemian Walcot Street. For delicious oven-baked flatbreads and cakes and tarts, descend to the mellow, vegetarian Chapel Arts Cafe (chapelarts.org) in the basement of the Chapel Arts Centre, Bath’s alternative arts venue. Though just yards from SouthGate shopping centre, it feels a million miles away in atmosphere.

Pubs and bars Of Bath’s many gastropubs, The King William (kingwilliampub.com) feels most like a “local”. You can eat in the very snug little bar rooms downstairs, or in simple but elegant dining rooms upstairs. The resolutely British cuisine uses highquality, seasonal, locally-sourced food – including meat from my butcher in Larkhall.

Fresh bread from the Bertinet Bakery

The Hare & Hounds

For an al fresco drink with a knockout countryside view, the best spot in Bath is the large garden of The Hare and Hounds (hareandhoundsbath.com), high up the hill in posh Lansdown. The pub’s food is excellent, by the way! If I have an urge for a pie and pint, I head to the cosy Raven (theravenofbath.co.uk). Its delicious pies – chicken, beef, venison (in season), veggie options, all served with a choice of gravies and mash or chips – are made by Pieminister, an award-winning Bristol outfit. The pub’s WiFi password is, appropriately, eatmorepies. A great new find is Olé (oletapas.co.uk), a tiny tapas bar above Paxton & Whitfield cheesemonger on John Street, run with boundless enthusiasm by two Spanish guys. The honeyed aubergine fritters are very moreish indeed, as are the churros dipped in thick chocolate. Lying underneath Grove Street, Opium Bar (opiumbars.com) really is hidden. It serves great cocktails in a funky atmosphere: incense wafts through rooms decorated with fauxRenaissance murals, cuckoo clocks, a wind-up gramophone and other eye-catching oddities.

Shopping If, like me, Bath’s many trendy clothes’ shops aren’t exactly your thing, pop in to often-overlooked Bath Guildhall Market (bathguildhallmarket.co.uk). In the handsome Victorian hall, you’ll find long-standing and engagingly old-fashioned stores such as a haberdashery, sweet shop and tea and coffee specialist.

GREAT

S R OUTDOO Bath is blessed with lovely parks, glorious countryside on its fringes, and a beautiful canal and river. If you're intent on getting exercise during your visit, we can offer some outstanding walks and bike rides.

Historic parks & gardens Dating from 1829, Royal Victoria Park is Bath's main green lung. Its 57 acres extend westwards from the scenic grassy swathe below The Royal Crescent to a superb children's playground and the secluded Botanical Gardens, which include a replica Roman temple. A great time to visit Victoria Park – Bathonians don't bother with the "Royal" – is early evening in summer, when you can often see hot-air balloons taking off. Laid out for the Georgians in 1795, pretty Sydney Gardens is even older. In the 19th century, the Kennet and Avon Canal and Brunel's Great Western Railway were cleverly landscaped in to the setting. The gardens sit directly behind the Holburne Museum. Bath's most central green spot is riverside Parade Gardens. With its deckchairs and regular concerts in the bandstand, on a summer's afternoon the gardens provide a snapshot of a traditionally English scene. On the city's southern slopes lies Prior Park Landscape Garden. Maintained by the National Trust and in part

designed in the 18th century by the poet Alexander Pope and famous landscape architect Capability Brown, the grounds descend to a Palladian bridge and lakes. The views across Bath are spectacular, and you may spot wild deer as you walk around the wood-flanked valley.

Best foot forward Put your walking boots on and tackle all or some of the Bath Skyline walk. Starting on the southern edge of the city, the six-mile, circular route offers memorable views across Bath (especially the sections above Bathwick and Widcombe), a Family Discovery Trail with a woodland play area, and sights such as Sham Castle – a folly built in the 1760s by local entrepreneur Ralph Allen to improve the view from his home! Or head off through the lovely, rolling countryside north of Bath on the linear Cotswold Way – the starting point for the 102-mile long-distance national trail is outside Bath Abbey. For a much gentler amble, you could follow the tranquil Kennet and Avon Canal out to Bathampton village.

Boating in Bath

While Bath is small enough to discover on foot, a bike is a great way to explore beyond the city's limits – and there are easy routes popular with cyclists of all ages that are largely or completely off-road.

View the city and countryside from the water. On the River Avon, put your feet up and take a skippered cruise from Pulteney Bridge, or take matters into your own hands by hiring a punt, rowboat or canoe. On the Kennet and Avon Canal, rent a narrowboat for a day or longer, and chug in serene fashion along the waterway: top speed is 4mph so you're not going to miss that heron nestling on the bank!

The 13-mile Bath Two Tunnels Circuit leaves the city via two recently-opened, dramatically-lit former train tunnels – the Combe Down Tunnel is Britain's longest cycle tunnel – then returns along the towpath of a scenic section of the Kennet and Avon Canal. En route are several enticing pubs and cafés.

The Kennet & Avon Canal

Or head west out of the city through open countryside on the track bed of the former Midland Railway – now the flat and tarmaced Bristol & Bath Railway Path. Bath to Bristol and back is 26 miles; you could halve the distance by returning, with your bike, by train. For more on walking and cycling routes, bike rentals and boating options, see visitbath.co.uk.

Jolly's is a premium department store renowned for its quality, service and selection of designer and high street brands keeping it at the forefront of Bath's fashion. Following a multi million pound investment in autumn 2014 one of Europe's oldest department stores has been restored to its former glory. Jolly's now boasts new brands including Giorgio Armani Beauty and Michael Kors handbags and a quintessentially British Tea Room. Established in 1831, Jolly's is steeped in history and in 1943 Queen Mary appointed the store, known then as Jolly & Son, as 'Silk Mercers to Her Majesty'. As a regular visitor at Jolly's, Queen Mary had a private dressing room designed exclusively for her use. The ornate fitting room is still in situ today, along with stunning stained glass windows, a listed peacock frieze and the original features which make Jolly's so unique. Visitors can learn all about the store's rich heritage by picking up a history map and following the trail of plaques. For non EU customers, Jolly's offers a hassle free and easy way to shop tax free and to save money on premium brands across beauty, fashion and home. Most goods purchased in the UK include a sales tax (VAT) which non EU residents are entitled to reclaim when leaving the country. Ask the Jolly's sales advisor to print a Premier Tax Free Shopping Form, along with the goods receipt which will detail all tax free purchases.

Visit the picture postcard square of Abbey Green. Frequently used as a film set the Square has a few reminders of the modern world. The huge tree at the centre of the Green was there when a young Mary Shelley finished writing the classic novel Frankenstein on the upper floor of No.5 in 1817. At the same house in the far corner of the Square is Timber-Treasures. Everything it sells is handmade in wood. It is a locally-owned family business and offers high quality service, helping customers browse the beautiful range of gifts, carvings, kitchen & gardenware at very reasonable prices. Many gifts are designed by the owner. He still makes some of the gifts himself (if you get lucky you'll even find ones he signs or brands). The Gothic fame of previous residents is reflected in its range of unusual gift ideas and award-winning window displays - the owners have won Bath Best Christmas Chalet 2010, Gold Medal Manchester Christmas Market 2012 and Best Craft Display at the Great Dorset Steam Fair 2014, come and take a look!

Situated around the corner from The Royal Crescent, The Marlborough Tavern combines the atmosphere of a local pub with the food quality you'd expect of a top restaurant. Two AA rosettes, a clutch of local & national awards plus inclusions in The Michelin Guide and Good Food Guide bear testimony to the quality of both food and service. It's no wonder they've won the Bath Gastropub of the Year title more than any other. Food is essentially, though not slavishly, English in character and takes advantage of locally sourced produce wherever possible. Their food reputation is matched by their service - always attentive without being intrusive. They have an extensive wine list and selection of local ales & ciders - and they can mix a mean cocktail too. Outside they boast what is arguably Bath's finest pub garden; a walled courtyard space, that's perfect for summertime lunching and drinking.
