2,876 years and counting With its sumptuous spas, fabulous food, stellar shopping and awe-inspiring architecture, Bath in 2013 is one of the UK’s most exciting leisure destinations. But we didn’t arrive here overnight. From its birth almost three millennia ago, this is a city that has always been built for pleasure. Here are just a few edited highlights

1750

AD 43 The Romans begin construction of Aquae Sulis as a ‘sanctuary of rest and relaxation’. They liked it so much that they hung around until AD 400. It’s changed a lot here since Roman times, but is still the place to be if you’re after some world-class R&R.

The Orchard Street and Assembly Rooms theatres open their doors within days of each other, leading to five years of bitter rivalry between the two. We’re happy to report that Bath’s theatrical landscape is less fractious these days, with visitor’s able to pick between such venues as the Bath Theatre Royal, Ustinov Studio, the egg, the Rondo Theatre and the Mission Theatre.

1674 863 BC Bladud, mythical king off th the B Britons, it founds Bath around the hot springs that miraculously cure his leprosy. OK, the story owes more to legend than history, but anyone who has sampled our healing waters – the only such natural springs in the UK – can vouch for their restorative effects.

Richard ‘Beau’ Nash is born. After limited success as a lawyer and military man, this native of Swansea reinvented himself as Bath’s Master of Ceremonies. A committed gambler, dandy and socialite, it was a role to which he was uniquely suited. Between 1702 and 1764, his enthusiastic embrace of Bath’s social scene and trend-setting tastes transformed the city into one of Europe’s most fashionable places to be – and be seen. Today, the annual Bath in Fashion festival celebrates the city’s unique sense of style with the help of designers such as Manolo Blahnik and Stephen Jones. We think Nash would approve.

1801 Jane Austen comes to live in Bath, staying until 1806. The place definitely made an impression – she set her novels Northanger Abbey and Persuasion in the city. Promenading past beautifully preserved examples of Georgian architecture like The Circus or The Royal Crescent you could be forgiven for thinking you’d wandered into one of her books. It’s like Disneyland for Austenophiles. There’s also the annual Jane Austen Festival, which promises to be bigger than ever in 2013 as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice’s publication.

Bath is designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. You may well wonder how it took them so long. With its Roman baths, 15th-century houses and unique Georgian architecture, the centre of Bath is one giant, living museum. A stroll through the city is a swift, street-level journey through thousands of years of history.

The first Great Bath Feast takes place, celebrating fantastic food and drink from in an around a city that is fast developing a reputation as one of the country’s best foodie destinations. Delicious Wiltshire ham, sparkling Somerset cider and the famous Bath bun are just a few gastronomic highlights of a month-long foodie festival. Also on the menu are demonstrations from top chefs, hands-on cookery classes and opportunities to sample plenty of Bath’s tastiest produce. The Great Bath Feast may be only one year old, but we think it’s set to become an indelible part of the city’s history.

1893 The Holburne Museum opens in the former Sydney Hotel on Great Pulteney Street. The initial collection was based around more than 4,000 objects amassed by the acquisitive Sir Thomas William Holburne, ranging from 17th-century porcelain and portrait miniatures to rare bronzes and Roman coins. Over the years, the museum has always moved with the times – major contemporary exhibitions now sit alongside its more antique exhibits. It’s a breadth that is reflected in the city as a whole. The Holburne is now just one of Bath’s 20-plus museums and galleries, so you’re sure to find something that appeals to your cultural tastes.

2006 Thermae Bath Spa opens opens. Though it’s heated by the same natural springs enjoyed by our Celtic and Roman predecessors, it’s unlikely they’d recognise this 21st-century take on the bathing experience. Combining the historic Cross and Hot Baths with the contemporary New Royal Bath, Thermae is an indulgent blend of ancient and modern. Some things never go out of style.

Bath Time:

48 hours in the city

There’s a lot going on in Bath: a living history stretching back past Roman times, stunning Georgian architecture, a vibrant arts and cultural scene and simply fantastic food and drink. With so much on the plate, is it really possible to devour it all in just two days? Huw Thomas and his wife Caroline weren’t sure, but they were certainly prepared to give it a try Bath Abbey The Official Bath App – free from iTunes and the Play Store

Day 1 5.00pm Arrive in Bath. A quick, easy drive – motorway almost to the door. The base for our stay is the Villa Magdala, a wonderful boutique B&B situated on a quiet leafy street a short stroll from the centre of town. From the warm welcome on arrival to the immaculate contemporary design of our room, it’s clear we’ve made the right choice. It’s tempting to luxuriate in our temporary home, but we need to make these next two days count so we drop off our gear and head out to explore.

Villa Magdala

7.30pm Mmm, dinner time. Glad I had the presence of mind to download the official Visit Bath app to my phone. Makes it a doddle to choose and locate a place that tickles our tastebuds. We settle on the Sardinian themed Aió, winner of the 2012 Bath Good Food Award for ‘Best Seafood Restaurant’. Richly deserved, methinks, if our perfectly cooked char-grilled calamari starters are anything to go by. Its land-based offerings are just as impressive. I opt for rabbit, while Caroline chooses the roast suckling pig, a house speciality. I’m really enjoying my meal, but the sight of that melt-in-the-mouth pork and crisp golden crackling can’t help but induce a little plate envy.

‘You go to some cities and get the measure of them in moments. Bath is a bit deeper than that’

Day 2 9.30am A quick stop at the Visitor Information Centre to plan our itinerary. I’m a bit of a digital traveller these days but you can’t beat faceto-face helpfulness and insights from the local experts.

9.30pm Drop in to The Salamander on John Street for a post-dinner drink. It’s bustling even on a weeknight – is buzzy Bath ever quiet? A deliciously light pint of Gem, brewed locally by Bath Ales, is quickly ordered and consumed. Nicely mixed crowd too. I’d been worried that my recent conversion to real ale was a sign I was getting old, but I’m squarely in the middle of The Salamander’s age range.

10.00pm One last drink in the Coeur de Lion, Bath’s smallest pub. With a bar no larger than the average sitting room, there can’t be many more diminutive establishments anywhere in the world.

The Circus

10.00am Headphones on for an audio walking tour of some of Bath’s most spectacular sights, downloaded earlier from the Visit Bath website. As we’re led through the city, our virtual tour guide serves up intriguing snippets and fascinating facts. For example, did you know that the splendid Georgian architecture at The Circus was not only influenced by classical Roman designs, but also by ancient British sites like Stonehenge? Or that the shop-lined Pulteney Bridge is one of only four such structures remaining in the world? Me neither.

11.00am

The Salamander

Time to rest our feet with a welldeserved cappuccino in The Holburne Museum’s café. The modern glass design is quite a contrast to the museum’s classical façade. Start to suspect we might be in for something a little different here.

11.30am Turns out our hunch was right: this is not your average museum. Built around the personal collection of Sir William Holburne, it’s a dizzying cornucopia of art and artefacts that reflects the man’s omnivorous, scatter-gun approach to collecting. With paintings, sculpture, porcelain, furniture and countless other unclassifiable trinkets, exploring here is like rooting through the world’s most fascinating attic.

with proprietor Andrew Peters. His enthusiasm for Bath’s food scene is infectious. This is reflected in the Brasserie’s menu, built around locally sourced produce, much of it bought from Green Park Station’s own weekly Farmers’ Market.

Bath, home to Britain’s oldest Farmers’ Market

12.30pm A short stroll across town brings us to the grand Green Park Station, once a working train station and now a thriving venue for markets and events. It’s also home to the award-winning Green Park Brasserie, housed in what was formerly the ticket office. Rail travel’s loss is the foodie’s gain. Over lunch – chicken with wild mushroom risotto for Caroline, a juicy burger for me – we chat

2.00pm Time for some retail therapy, another Bath speciality. We spend a few hours browsing the city’s exceptional array of independent boutiques. Even this reluctant shopper (who generally makes his purchases online while sitting on a comfy sofa) has to admit that the choice is impressive.

‘History and heritage keep tumbling out of the stonework wherever you go in this special city’ Caroline’s response is less measured. C a Her H e gleeful exploration results in the th h purchase of ‘the perfect pair of boots’, along with a number of other b o unique items. aallegedly ll

6.30pm Dinner at The Chequers, where an unfussy gastropub ambience pleasingly dovetails with a gourmet restaurant-style menu. My pork loin and cheek, complete with a pencilthin baton of crunchy crackling, is arranged with such artistry that it seems almost a shame to eat it.

Exceptional independent boutiques

8.30pm On to some live stand-up comedy at Komedia, a lively arts venue. Thankfully it’s only the performers who are required to remain on their feet. After the busy Bath day we’ve had, the appeal of sitting down for a few hours cannot be overestimated. A few drinks and a lot of laughs later, we’re ready to turn in for the night. ‘No visit would be complete without exploring the Roman Baths, the epicentre of the World Heritage Site’

Day 3 10.00am Breakfast at Sally Lunn’s, one of the city’s oldest houses and home of the world-famous Sally Lunn bun. Somewhere between a scone and a brioche, this is British baking at its best. Particularly when slathered with clotted cream and sticky strawberry jam.

10.30am No visit would be complete without exploring the Roman Baths, the epicentre of the World Heritage Site that is the city of Bath. The ancient ruins are augmented by interactive displays and reconstructions that bring the baths’ centuries-old history to life. On this crisp and chilly autumn day, the warm, steam-shrouded waters look incredibly inviting. It’s easy to see why the Romans, Georgians and Victorians were so keen on the place.

Pulteney Bridge at night

12.30pm History and heritage keep tumbling out of the stonework wherever you go in this special city. You can, like us, indulge your inner Jane Austen with lunch at the elegant Pump Room adjoining the baths. In Georgian times, this was where the upper classes of Bath would come to take the waters and to be seen. The crowd might be less stuffy these days, but it has lost little of its lustre. In these airy and refined surroundings we half expect Mr Darcy to appear at the door.

Prior Park Landscape Gardens

2.00pm

4.30pm

We get a very different perspective of the city on the Bath Skyline Walk, the National Trust’s most popular walk. Just a short hop from the centre, this six-mile circular path is the perfect antidote to the pavements we’ve been pounding. With the sun high in a piercingly blue sky, we’ve definitely got the right day for it. Winding through lush fields and shady woodland, the path grants us spectacular views back across the city.

Before we depart for home, we stop at the White Hart pub on Widcombe Hill for a quick drink and to reflect on the last 48 hours. We’ve hardly stopped, but it still feels like we’ve barely scratched the surface of this multi-layered city. It’s sophisticated and homely all at once, cultured and cosmopolitan. You go to some cities and get the measure of them in moments. Bath is a bit deeper than that. Here’s to the next immersive experience.

Location, In Jane Austen’s words, we’re merely repeating a ‘truth universally acknowledged’ when we say that Bath is a feast for the eyes. The city dazzles with visually stunning locations, from honey-stoned Georgian terraces to enticing nooks and crannies that you’ll want to capture on your smartphone or camera. To get the full picture, you’ll have to come and see for yourself. In the meantime, here are some snapshots from our very own album

Ahead of the curve Bath’s crown jewels. The sweeping golden arcs of The Royal Crescent and Circus are the epitome of elegant, perfectly proportioned Georgian design. They look as good today as they did when constructed more than 200 years ago and are just one of the many reasons why our city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spanning history Built in 1773, Pulteney Bridge is constructed with shops lining both sides. It’s a true architectural rarity – you’ll have to travel to Venice or Florence to see another like it.

Time for a treat

Everyone knows that Bath has a thing for spas. The clue is in the name, after all. But what’s perhaps less well known is the city’s flair for style, shopping and serious indulgence. It’s easy enough to spot on a 21st-century visit spent sipping ginger and ginseng cocktails in a glamorous underground club. But the ‘S’ words wend all the way back throughout history too. From the elegant society balls of Jane Austen’s day, to the sartorial style of those toga-clad Romans, right the way back to the ancient Britons, Bath has been a place of relaxation and retail therapy. But don’t just take my word for it. Archaeologists have discovered that international trade (that thing we call shopping) led to

precious gemstones from overseas winding up in the waters of Bath’s ultimate trademark (that thing we call a spa).

‘A glass-covered roof opened a window to the stars as my therapist swished me through the water’ Allow me to explain through my own city break to Bath, armed with only a few good friends and the selfless desire to show you how to have a good time. Let’s get to work.

The trip started with the two founding principles of any visit to Bath: Jane Austen and the hot springs. Jane Austen I met by staying in her former home, now a beautiful self-catered flat decked out in contemporary colours with a worn wooden desk to help kindle literary inspiration. The springs I uncovered at the Thermae Bath Spa. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a woman in possession of her faculties would never strip down to her swimwear and stand outside in the midst of an English winter. Thermae Bath Spa vanquishes such truths.

A wealth of entertainment

From the (soothingly hot) waters of its open-air rooftop pool, the city’s sights are laid bare as the steam drifts across terrace after limestone terrace, justifying Bath’s classification as a UNESCO World Heritage City. The building the roof pool perches on is completely modern though, constructed as part of a project to celebrate the new millennium. It houses steam rooms laden with lavender, eucalyptus and mint on one floor and private treatment rooms on another. The spacious indoor Minerva pool on the lower ground floor, overflowing with natural thermal waters, is named after the Roman goddess of medicine, wisdom, commerce and poetry, a fitting deity to watch over visitors to Bath. By the time the sunlight faded away, I was immersed in the Hot Bath, a separate bathing area first fashionable in the 18th century and now the venue for Thermae’s extensive range of spa treatments. A glass-covered roof opened a window to the stars as my therapist

Everything’s within just a short walk

swished me through the water as part of Thermae’s signature treatment, a blend of hydrotherapy and shiatsu, called a watsu.

‘Minerva was the Roman goddess of medicine, wisdom, commerce and poetry, a fitting deity’ ‘Imagine your limbs are seaweed,’ my therapist said as she attached buoyancy aids to my calves ‘and let them float through the water.’ At first, I felt awkward. Then a little seasick... And then... And then... Weightlessness arrived in terms of mind, body and spirit. The stars danced overhead, my muscles relaxed and the water that fell as rain more than 10,000 years ago rose from the earth to do its work. It’s tough to know how to follow an experience like that, but the Theatre

Royal had a pretty good answer: sit back and relax. This 200-yearold institution pulls off its own magic trick by creating an illusion of intimacy while accommodating hundreds of guests. Dripping with deep red and gold in the main house, it also packs a punch with its sassy subterranean bar and achingly hip line-up. That night, the provocative Rambert Dance Company pulsed between the spotlights, but the box office diary lists a dizzying range of productions, including those for children at the sideshoot egg Theatre. The next day was a bit more active: taking part in a workshop at the Vegetarian Cooking School we learnt how to rustle up a knockout meal. Rachel, who also runs nearby Demuth’s Restaurant, a veggie institution, kicked off the course. ‘Never wash mushrooms,’ she explained. ‘And sprinkle semolina around when you’re making fresh pasta. Otherwise it sticks in the machine.’ The pasta machine represented my hope for the class:

a beautiful, shining thing I’d never quite had the confidence to tackle on my own. Turn the handle here, squeeze out air pockets there, and finally, incredibly, taste wild mushroom ravioli made by my own fair hand. It was one of the best meals I’ve ever had - even if I do say so myself! After all that home economics, it was time for a night on the town. A Thaipirovska cocktail at moody Sub 13 got the evening off to a funky start. ‘Don’t ask for less ice,’ warned the drinks menu. ‘It is there to keep your drink perfect.’ We weren’t about to argue with the city’s number-one cocktail bar. From there, we dined at Hall & Woodhouse restaurant on Old King Street. The former auction house was buzzing with energy, the crowds no doubt drawn in by its unfussy atmosphere and excellent menu – simple pub-style comfort food prepared to a brasserielevel standard with the best local ingredients. Well fed, we moved on to our final stop: the Circo Bar (very chic, very circular, very cool grey and burnt orange) deep underground somewhere south of the Abbey.

The next morning brought a bacon and avocado toastie at the eclectic Jazz Café and a final chance to survey my map and plot out a power-shopping strategy.

‘Major labels rub shoulders with wonderfully creative independents’ The Southgate area covers most of the major chains, scooping up All Saints, Urban Outfitters, Debenhams and a huge Apple store. To the north, Milsom Street, Broad Street and Bartlett Street are home to the very best designer brands and independent boutiques. Further east along Walcot Street is the ‘artisan area’ with open-air markets, the Fine Cheese Co and the aptly named Mastershoe. It’s also home to The Makery craft centre, where we had hoped to try our hand sewing garters and knickers. Alas for us, the workshops were full but the shop still overflowed with rainbow ribbons, punk glamour purses and clever safety pins.

“looking even more glorious at sunset.”

The Royal Crescent

From there, it’s a short walk (as is everything in visitor-friendly Bath) to the well-heeled labyrinth of Milsom Place. Phase Eight and Cath Kidston sit alongside Ted Baker and Vom Fass while celebrity-backed Jamie’s Italian serves up some ‘lovely jubbly’ risotto against a background of shabby chic. That’s the beauty of shopping in Bath. Major label names rub shoulders with wonderfully creative independents to conjure up a unique retail experience. We could have explored here forever, had time and our budgets allowed. Talking of beauty, we rounded off the day in another part of Bath that no other city can match: The Royal Crescent, looking even more glorious than usual at sunset. As I left Bath, a jewellery shop caught my eye and I remembered all those ancient gemstones found in the spring waters. Somehow everything, and yet nothing, has changed. Bath, true to form, still makes a great place to visit for a spa and shopping experience. Enjoy.

Scale the cliffs at Cheddar Gorge – highest in the country – and go underground at the labyrinthine Cheddar Showcaves. But it’s not all geology. At the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company you can find out how this famous food is made, as well as sampling some for yourself.

Once an important mining centre on the busy Somerset coalfield, Radstock now preserves the region’s industrial past for future generations. The evocative Radstock Museum recreates the world of the Somerset miner, from his dirty and dangerous work at the coalface to his family and social life above ground.

The jury’s still out on exactly why – and how – these massive stones were transported more than 150 miles from Pembrokeshire in West Wales to their current site on Salisbury Plain, but this just adds to their mystery. Whether Stonehenge was designed as a place of worship, a burial ground or a massive calendar, this World Heritage Site retains an aura that never fails to enthral. If Stonehenge piques your curiosity, head a little further afield to Avebury – another World Heritage Site. With a diameter of almost 1,500 feet, this Neolithic monument is the world’s largest stone circle.

Longleat Safari and Adventure Park Animal Magic Take a walk on the wild side at one of Britain’s biggest and best-loved nature attractions. It’s well known for its lions, but Longleat is also home to gorillas, tigers, meerkats and giraffes. A particular highlight is the Monkey Drive-Thru. Just make sure you keep your windows wound up!

Lacock The Timewarp Village It’s not hard to see why the historic National Trust village of Lacock is a popular location for film and TV shoots ranging from Harry Potter to Pride and Prejudice. Bath’s compact layout makes it the ideal walker-friendly city. Bring your hiking boots too, as the surrounding countryside also extends a big welcome to walkers. Just a short hop from the city centre, you can join the Bath Skyline Walk, a six-mile loop of waymarked trails through shady woodland, lush meadows and secluded valleys. On your way you’ll come across an Iron Age hill fort, Roman remains and breathtaking widescreen views back across the city. Further afield, you can lose yourself – in the best possible way – on countless paths that criss-cross Wiltshire, Somerset and the Cotswolds.

If you enjoy messing about on boats, you’ve come to the right place. Travel the River Avon under your own steam by punt or rowboat, or let someone else steer the ship on a relaxing cruise. Either way, you’ll get a very different view of the city as you drift by. You can also take to the water by traditional narrowboat on the Kennet and Avon Canal. Once a major trade route moving goods between Bath and London, it’s now reborn as an idyllic inland waterway dedicated to pure pleasure.

Heading out on two wheels is a great way to explore Bath’s surroundings. Starting just outside the city, the Colliers Way route winds through 23 miles of rolling countryside past Radstock to Frome in the south. Alternatively, you can ride the 13-mile off-road path that links the centres of Bath and its vibrant neighbour Bristol. 2013 promises to be a big year for cycling in the city. In April, the new Two Tunnels Greenway will open, utilising the former railway tunnels that burrow under Combe Down in the south of the city. It will link the heart of Bath with the National Cycle Network, making it an even better place to join Britain’s cycling revolution and get on your bike.

Two AA rosettes, a clutch of local & national awards plus inclusions in The Michelin Guide and Good Food Guide bear testimony to the quality of both food and service. It's no wonder they've won the Bath Gastropub of the Year title more than any other. Food is essentially, though not lavishly English in character and takes advantage of locally sourced produce wherever possible. The lunchtime menu features a range of lighter dishes and sharing plates plus some traditional pub classics - and the Sunday roasts are legendary. Their food reputation is matched by their service always friendly and attentive without being intrusive. They have an extensive wine list and selection of local ales & ciders - and they can mix a mean cocktail too. Jolly's, a House of Fraser department store, is renowned for its selection of designer brands, famous labels and high street names. From British and European names to international fashion labels and cosmetics brands, Jolly's is at the forefront of Bath's fashion, offering the latest designs in womenswear, menswear, beauty and home. Established in 1831, Jolly's is one of the United Kingdom's oldest department stores and is known throughout Bath for its quality and service. The department store is steeped in history and in 1943 Queen Mary appointed the store, known then as Jolly and Son, as 'Silk Mercers to Her Majesty'. Queen Mary regularly visited Jolly and Son to buy her silk, where she had her own private fitting room which was exclusively designed for Her Majesty. Queen Mary's fitting room can still be visited today which still has many of the original designs and features. For non EU customers, Jolly's offers a hassle free and easy way to shop tax free and to save money in Bath. Most goods purchased in the UK include a sales tax (VAT) which non EU residents are entitled to reclaim when leaving the country. Ask the Jolly's' sales advisor to print a Premier Tax Free Shopping Form, along with the goods receipt which will detail all tax free purchases making the claim process much quicker and easier. Open

9.30am - 5.30pm 10am - 5pm

Visit the picture postcard square of Abbey Green, a short step from the Roman Baths Museum. Frequently used as a film set the Square has few reminders of the modern world. The buildings and the beautiful tree are much the same as they were when a young Jane Austen wandered past them in the 1800s. Nestling under the tree in the far corner of the Square is TimberTreasures. Everything it sells is handmade in or from wood. It is a locally-owned family business and offers high quality service helping customers browse the beautiful range of gifts, carvings, kitchen and garden ware all at very reasonable prices. Many gifts are designed by the owner. He still makes some of the gifts himself (if you get lucky you'll even find the ones he signs or brands). Even more of his ideas are outsourced to local and foreign artisans which helps give the shop its fascinating appeal. If you like the smell, touch and look of wood walk under the big tree into the shop – you'll love it! Visit us online at www.timber-treasures.co.uk

Trip Advisor review - "Quirky country house hotel" "Rooms are lovely, the furniture is all old (in a good way), the bar is decorated with old signs and bottles and there's a selection of games. The staff were really helpful and the food was lovely. Don't expect a chain hotel with exactly matching rooms, climate control and boring communal spaces this place is quirky and full of charm."
