Congratulations, Pelham High School Class of 2024! May your futures be bright, your hearts be full, and your dreams know no bounds.
With warmest regards,
A path apart.
When the class of 2024 began their senior year back in August, this day seemed like it would never get here.
The anticipation of graduating is unlike anything else we experience in life, but similar in the fact that it gets here faster than we expect.
Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, seniors across Shelby County have spent their time creating lasting memories, and now, the moment has arrived to walk across the stage and take that next step in life.
It’s a crossroads where you look back and wish time could have gone slower, that you could savor in the special moments a little longer, but a moment where you look ahead to all of the possibilities of a life and dream you get to chase.
With that realization, it is also a time to celebrate, which is why we take the time each year to put this special product together.
The goal of our graduation publication is to highlight every graduate for each school in Shelby County, all valedictorians and a few other special seniors who have left their mark on their institutions.
It is a publication that takes a lot of cooperation from principals, counselors and many others every year in a tight window of time, but one that is worth it to give all graduates an opportunity to recognize their achievement.
To get to this point in life is a milestone that doesn’t come easily. It takes effort from the student, support from family and friends and great leaders in education.
Most importantly, it takes never giving up. Whether you’re the smartest in the class, or skate by (like I did), we all have moments of doubt, anxiety and stress as we grow into the person we are supposed to be throughout high school.
Those moments, however, are what have you set for greatness. As students, you have faced the right challenges to prepare you for life, and if you go into it with the right attitude and work ethic, you will be lined up for success.
To the class of 2024, you have earned this moment. Don’t ever forget where you come from or how you got here as you set sail to blaze your own path. Congratulations to each of you!

While walking the halls of Briarwood Christian School during her final weeks of high school, Sarah Grace Leonard can’t hold back the overwhelming feeling of accomplishment.
After suffering a brain injury in October 2016, Leonard was unable to participate in gymnastics and cheerleading. While this was an incredible challenge for her, she feels that she has overcome it.
“I was able to start cheering my freshman year, which has been the biggest blessing,” Leonard said. “Once I was taken out of gymnastics, because of my brain injury, I finally got to start back on a team. That’s been a huge part of my high school experience.”

“While holding the banner at my first football game, my friends and I didn’t know to let go of each other,” Leonard said. “Of course, we ended up face-planting and getting run over by the football players.”
Leonard is looking forward to the social aspect of college, becoming acquainted with new people and new experiences. She even plans on going through sorority recruitment, where she hopes to find her home on campus.
Leonard also plans on majoring in occupational therapy after her battles with her brain injury.
“I want to go and help other people who are in that same experience,” Leonard said. “I’m hoping that if I do pursue that path, I can become a pediatric occupational therapist.”
Leonard says that she was diagnosed handicap due to her injury. After experiencing how difficult it is to come back from that, she wants to offer other the hope that she had, in any way possible.

Calera High School senior Javier Balderas has been involved in the band since his junior year. While he says it’s not usual to join that late into high school, it’s an experience he’s grateful for.
“If it weren’t for me joining, I wouldn’t have met some of my closest friends,” Balderas said.
Balderas has been playing the tuba since he joined the band and is even band president for his senior year.
Throughout high school, Balderas says he’s built a community at Calera. His teachers have played a major role in his development, always pushing him to try new things and do his best.
“They try to understand each student and are so encouraging,” Balderas said.

Theresa Nguyen has been involved in numerous clubs and organizations throughout her four years at Chelsea High School.
While being involved in the health science program and Ambassadors, she grew her interpersonal skills.
“Those organizations especially, have really propelled my ability to put myself out there,” Nguyen said. “I’m able to present myself in a way that represents our school well, but it’s preparing me for future endeavors as well.”
Including the programs she’s been involved in, Nguyen explained what she’ll miss most about her time at Chelsea.
“My teachers have been so special to me, always answering questions and encouraging me,” Nguyen said. “They’re very insightful and I’ve been able to lean on them at any time.”
While growing up in a single-parent household, the community Chelsea offered Nguyen kept her going through the challenges she faced.
“Being able to say hello and have a conversation with just about anyone I came across truly makes my day,” Nguyen said.
“That’s one of many things I’ll miss about Chelsea– the people.”
While Nguyen has not decided on where she will spend her undergraduate days, she knows she will have a home at her future alma mater. Nguyen has been accepted to both Harvard University in Massachusetts and Stanford University in California.
She’s interested in a variety if topics, making it difficult for her to decide on a major. However, Nguyen says that she’s leaning toward studying international relations or business.
“I’ve learned the value of hav-
which may be a basic thing, but I am so blessed to have that.”
Either college she attends in college is far from her home in Chelsea, but that’s exactly what Nguyen was looking for.
“I’m excited to meet people from all around the country, and learn about their experiences,” Nguyen said. “I think that who you surround yourself with is so important, so I’m excited to be around peers that have interests similar to mine but come from completely different backgrounds.”
ing a good leader through my involvement,” Nguyen said. “I think it would be cool to work in an administrative role, but I’m not sure where.”
Although she’s uncertain of what path she will take in the future, with an interest in international affairs she thinks a government role may be a good fit for her.
Headed into her next chapter, Nguyen is certain that the community she has in Chelsea will be evergreen.
“Everything comes back to the support system I have here,” Nguyen said. “I will miss my teachers and friends the most,
Growing up in an immigrant household, Nguyen has viewed the opportunities she’s had so far as a privilege.
“I’m doing it for a bigger purpose than just for me,” Nguyen said. “Growing up in that environment, as well as seeing the struggles that my family went through kind of propelled me to want to work harder to emphasize how much their sacrifices mean to me.”
Nguyen says that staying true to herself and true to her character is something that was instilled in her at a young age, and something she plans to carry with her through her future, wherever she ends up.

In only a few weeks, you will be graduates. The next chapter of your lives will commence, and as that date approaches, you might be wondering if you are ready for whatever comes next. As someone who has known you for several years, I can say without hesitation that you are ready. From the outside looking in, I see young men and women who are very intelligent, highly adaptable to change, and determined to do well, especially when someone doubts you. You have been given a strong spiritual foundation and an excellent education. You have
tried hard things and thrived. You are surrounded by family and friends who love you, and you are guided by a heavenly Father who will never leave you.
Still, such a drastic step can be scary. Maybe you are wondering if you will be able to maintain the level of success you have had in high school. (You will.) Perhaps you are worried about making the right decisions. (You will, as long as you realize that life is about trial and error, and being resilient.) Maybe you wish you had all the answers NOW. (You will not.) I remind you what Philippians 4:6 tells us: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situa tion, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present
your requests to God.” Life is about taking risks, but I encourage you to take those risks after much prayer and study in the Word. I ask that you use your minds and not simply follow your heart. Emotions can cloud judgment, so be careful. I admonish you to gather moments, not things, and strive to live in a way that reflects the love of God to others. By honoring the knowledge that you have gained thus far, you will find in time that God’s plan is

While Helena High School senior Ryan Wellman has spent his four years in high school studying and preparing for his college career, he attributes his growth to his time in the Helena Huskies Band.
“The band has taught me that putting in hard work pays off,” Wellman said.
Wellman picked up the alto saxophone in the sixth grade while playing in the middle school band. Now, Wellman sits fourth chair in the concert band and served as the section leader for the marching band during the previous season.
Wellman expressed his gratitude for band directors Jeff Burnside and Brent Traylor, as they have been two of his greatest influences, setting him up for success and en-
couraging him along the way.
“Both of them have shown what a good leader looks like,” Wellman said.
“They’ve been great mentors through high school, showing (the band) how to balance work and life.”
Reflecting on experiences at Helena High School, Wellman recalls silly memories of marching band camp. As one camp day was coming to an end, him and his friends decided to see how many people could sleep in one tent.
“We ended up with almost
40 in one small tent,” Wellman said. “It’s one of my favorite memories from that camp.” Wellman is also a member of numerous honor societies including Mu Alpha Theta, the National English Honor Society, the TRIN Honor Society, the National Technical Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society.
In the fall, Wellman plans on continuing his education and music career at Auburn University. His interest in cyber security led him to major in software engineering. Wellman
said he discovered his admiration for software engineering through computer science classes throughout high school.
“Being able to participate in these higher-lever classes has prepared me for how rigorous my college courses will be,” Wellman said. “The classes they offer at my school have directly prepared me for what I wish to do in college, which I am grateful for.”
Headed into college, Wellman is eager to embrace his independence in the next chapter of life as well as the opportunities to try new things while meeting new people.
“I am excited about the quality of the education I’ll be getting, but I’m so interested in the atmosphere at Auburn,” Wellman said.

In the passage of John 15:1-5, Jesus tells us that He is the Vine and we are the branches. We are to ABIDE in Him and bear much fruit. As we study God’s Word and apply it to our lives, we will increase in Christ-likeness and produce quality fruit that benefits the body of Christ.
Be faithful to stay connected to the pattern of reading God’s Word and living a life of Christ-likeness. Move consistently in the right direction toward Jesus. The routine must become the reward. In other words, our worship, our God time, the reading of God’s Word and prayer will bring the fruit even though we may not see it now.

Focus on Jesus and decide what is important. There are two things that will last forever: God’s Word and People. Just like the grapevine needs to be fertilized, watered, and tended, we as believers in Jesus are to routinely follow Him, faithfully attend places we are taught His principles of life and worship Him.
DON’’T QUIT. DON’T GIVE IN. ABIDE in Jesus. In the Service of King Jesus.

It seems like just yesterday that your parents were dropping you off for your first day at Indian Springs. The nerves and anticipation of that day have been replaced with growing confidence and a sense of self. Although there have been long and tiring days along the way, in hindsight, we can all agree that the years have flown by. You will soon arrive on campus one last time as a student and leave as new Indian Springs alumni. Wear this badge proudly, for it is a great accomplishment. Your journey was hard but worthwhile. Never shy away from hard challenges throughout your life. You will be made better for trying.
Graduation is the culmination of your Indian Springs journey as a student, but it is just an inflection point in what I know will be an incredibly successful and meaningful life journey. On behalf of the faculty, staff, and administration at Indian Springs, congratulations to you on your remarkable personal accomplishments and collective achievements. More importantly, let
me share my gratitude for the contributions you have made to the Indian Springs community. It has been an absolute pleasure watching you grow over the years, sharing laughs with you, and seeing you flourish in our classrooms, on our stage, on our athletic fields, and in every other endeavor you have undertaken.
As you prepare to travel your unique path and the inevitable twists and turns of life, know that you are prepared to do so, that you are worthy of the challenges ahead, that you are more than capable, and that you are loved. We eagerly await to see all you will achieve in life beyond high school and will celebrate every significant milestone from afar. Your Indian Springs family will miss you dearly, so we hope you will come back to visit often.
With admiration and gratitude,
Scott G. Schamberger, Head of School, Indian Springs School
As a violinist, Sydney Schneider has spent years practicing her discipline while participating in the choir at Indian Springs High School.
She has been the president of the treble choir for the last year and has taken music ensemble classes to continue working on her skills with her violin, which she began practicing at age 9. Even her music teacher, Dr. Jung, has encouraged her every step of the way.
Schneider says that the choral group and ensemble class has been a large part of what’s made her, “Spring’s experience” great.
“It’s a great way to bond with my peers,” Schneider said. “It’s not every day you get to play music with your closest friends.”
In 2022, Schneider participated in the Alabama Youth Symphony Orchestra, where she was selected for the Na-
tional Youth Orchestra. She had the opportunity to travel with the orchestra, playing in various states, and eventually playing in Carnegie Hall.
“It allowed me to broaden my perspective on the music world,” Schneider said. “I’ve really liked the diversity of the classical music world, and helped me establish many connections.”
ing her community. Part of what makes the school special to her is all of the opportunities for involvement.
While looking forward to her time in college, Schneider is saying her final goodbyes to the friends she’s made throughout her time at Indian Springs.
Schneider feels that she has been blessed to attend Indian Springs, where she gets to enjoy the campus while build-
“I will really miss my community,” Schneider said. “My teachers that have shaped me and my friends that have been there for me through everything– I will cherish the experiences I’ve had with them.”
She plans on attending Vanderbilt University, majoring in violin performance. Although she doesn’t have a clear career path yet, her collegiate career is something she hopes will set her down the correct path.
“I know I want to pursue a career in music, I’m just not sure what that looks like yet, but attending Vanderbilt will help me in setting those goals,” Schneider said.
Headed into this next chapter in her life, Schneider is most excited about the music department, where she’ll spend most of her time.
“I’ve heard that it’s very supportive, and encouraging, but also competitive in a way,” Schneider said. “I know it’s pretty small, so just establishing myself in that community and making friends with kind of the same passions and objectives as I have is exciting to me.”

First, I want to thank each of you for a remarkable school year. You have shown tremendous fortitude and perseverance throughout your tenure at Montevallo High School.
I pray you will look back at these moments to find strength and guidance as you move into the next stages of life. Many of you will soon transition into college or the military, while others will shift into the workforce. As you take those next steps, it is important to recognize the support system that encouraged you through this

As you pass through the halls of Montevallo High School one last time, I hope you take the time to reflect on the lessons learned from this wonderful place.
Lastly, I encourage you to always lean on your faith, hold on to the hope, and love with all your heart. You are now, and forever will be, part of the bulldog family. Best wishes and Go Dawgs!

Montevallo senior Devin Colbert has spent his years in high school achieving goals he set for himself at the start. He says the competitive environment encouraged him to keep pushing through.
“I found out about the rankings for my class’s top 10 my freshman year,” Colbert said. “That pushed me to get the top the best that I could.”
Colbert credits his successes in high school to teachers and faculty, as they pushed him to strive for the top spot in his class.
Outside of class, Colbert participated in numerous clubs including SGA and Future Teachers of America. He also played on the cross country, track and tennis teams.
During his time in SGA, Colbert held office as Vice

“It’s definitely helped me become a better leader,” Colbert said. “I’ve learned to keep my composure when things don’t go as planned.”
He shouted out his counselor, Leslie Walker, for her never-ending support.
“It would be after school hours, but if I reached out to her she always got back to me,” said Colbert. “She has supported me in achieving my goals since my freshman year. She’s

Looking ahead to his time in college, Colbert is most excited about the research opportunities at Clark University in Massachusetts.
With interests in vastly different topics, he plans to study both biochemistry and creative writing.
“I know those are very different from each outer, but I want to do so many things in the future,” said Colbert. “I want to be a doctor and an author. I enjoy the research aspect involved with each of them.”

Colbert’s college decision to make the move to Massachusetts didn’t come lightly. He said he spent time researching his school and the town before making his final decision.
“I found that the university is very involved with the community of Worcester,” Colbert said. “That means a lot to me since I plan on being involved across campus.”
Colbert is excited to become immersed in a new environment. He’s interested in getting involved with their environmental club, which partners with local organizations.
“I am so excited to see the different culture in a northern state,” said Colbert. “I’ve lived in Alabama my entire life, so moving to a new state will be completely different.”

It is a joy to be surrounded by students who are not only high achievers in the classroom, but on the stage, and in the field of play, as well. You make coming to work every day a pleasure and inspire me to be a better person.
As you prepare to embark on the next chapter of your lives, whether it be pursuing higher education, entering the workforce, or exploring other paths, remember the lessons you’ve learned and the values you hold dear. Never forget the value of hard work and determination.
Take time to consider the impact you would like to leave as you

Oak Mountain senior Evan Peng has played trombone in both the marching and concert band for four years, being section leader for the last two. He recognizes his experiences in the band as a large part of what he will miss about the Eagles.
“I’ll miss the community I have in the band,” said Peng. “The work we put into a show to produce something great to show off – that feeling of hard work is worth missing.”
Peng began playing the trombone in the sixth grade, but his love for music sparked with the piano at age eight.
“When I picked up the trombone, I knew that was it,” Peng said. “I put so much time into music, it’s something I’ll never

While Peng spent countless hours in the band room, he also spent time studying and discovering a passion for physics.
He credits his teachers for allowing him to explore numerous topics in classes and encouraging him along the way.

While he took a variety of AP courses, Peng shouted out to his AP Euro teacher, Ms. Lewis.
“She gave me every opportunity to learn,” said Peng. “She has been one of my favorite teachers, one of the most encouraging.”
Putting his skills to the test outside of the classroom, Peng participated on the math team as well as in the scholar’s bowl. He was also a part of the Key Club, which is a club that prior-

He feels that his involvement in various clubs and the marching band have prepared him to juggle the heavy workload in college, while maintaining a social life.
“Having good time-management skills is crucial for college success,” Peng said. “I’m ready to take that next step because of my teachers.”
Headed into college, Peng plans on continuing to participate in extracurriculars on his campus. He will attend the University of Alabama to study both physics and math.
He plans to take advantage of his opportunities at the university and pursue a master’s degree, taking him one step closer to becoming a professor.

As we approach the end of your journey at Pelham High School, I find myself reflecting on the incredible memories we’ve shared together over the past four years.
It’s been a privilege to watch each and every one of you grow and evolve into the remarkable individuals you are today. First and foremost, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for the countless memories you’ve given us.
You’ve filled our halls with laughter, pride, and an undeniable sense of community. The camaraderie and spirit you’ve shown on the field, the court, the stage, and in the classroom have truly made Pelham High School a special place. To the parents of our graduating seniors, thank you for entrusting us with your children over these past four years.
From the first nervous drop-off on the kindergarten doorstep to the bittersweet goodbyes of senior year, we’ve shared in the joys and milestones of your child’s journey. From forgotten lunches to last-minute homework rescues, from the trials of middle school to the triumphs of high school, we’ve been there every step of the way, watching your children grow and mature into young adults.
As we prepare to bid farewell to the Class of 2024, I’m reminded of the journey we’ve taken together, from the shaky beginnings of your freshman year in 2020 to the awesomeness of the Senior Sunset in May of 2024.
Each milestone, each memory, has brought us closer together as

a family. As you prepare to embark on the next chapter of your lives, I want you to remember that Pelham High School will always be here for you.
As you set out on your own personal road trip, remember that you are tuned up and well made. You are prepared, you are capable, and you are ready to take control of the road ahead. Armed with the full suite of tools and bolstered by unwavering parental support.
Your mentors, much like skilled mechanics, have meticulously honed your capabilities, fueling your journey with resilience and fortitude.
From your freshman initiation, you’ve been forged “Ford Tough”, evolving into Cadillac refinement as you learned to “Rise Above.” Now, presented with the opportunity to “Find New Roads” like a dependable Chevy. Waste no moment, engage the throttle, embrace the voyage, and trust in the meticulous craftsmanship beneath your hood. For you, my fellow Panther, have become, in the words of BMW, “The Ultimate Driving Machine.”
The road ahead may be winding, but I have no doubt that you will navigate it with grace, determination, and a spirit of resilience. So go forth, Class of 2024, and make your mark on the world. Your Pelham family will be cheering you on every step of the way.

Throughout his time at Pelham High School, Ian Chambers has been involved in the Student Government Association and the Technology Student Association. With TSA he had the opportunity to compete in technology competitions.
“The competitions in Montgomery were some of the best times in TSA,” Chamber said. “We got to showcase what we worked on throughout the year and have fun as a group.”
Chambers also remembers how much of an impact each of his teachers made on his academic career. He says that Mrs. Tucker, his computer science teacher, was one of the best.
Although he’s excited about his future college career, Chambers says he’s going to miss the environment of his school. He says that while college is going to open new doors, leaving behind the community at Pelham will be difficult.
“It’s so easy to talk to everyone here, so moving to a bigger school where I don’t know as many people is going to be a big adjustment,” Chambers said.
Chambers will also be leav-
“Math and computer class isn’t fun for some students, but Mrs. Tucker’s class was always fun,” Chambers said. “She’s always engaging and makes sure all of her classes are absorbing all of the information. It was always a fun environment to be in”
ing his wrestling team behind, but he says the memories he’s made will last him a lifetime.
“I will always remember the nights in hotel rooms with all my friends just messing around, and even getting in a little bit of trouble,” Chambers said. “It’s nights like those that will make me miss this time in life.”
Chambers feels prepared heading into college due to the courses he’s taken throughout high school. He has taken numerous AP classes to get college credit, which has set him up for success.
Chambers will be attending the University of Alabama, where he will major in electrical engineering. His love for technology makes him optimistic about his future in the field.
“I love working with computers,” Chambers said. “I’ve been in coding classes for the last two years, and I guess that’s what created my passion for it.”
He is also looking forward to the independence and social aspects of attending the university. Chambers plans on attending football games and joining clubs to get better acquainted with his peers.
“I’m able to talk to my college friends about computer science because that’s how much I have learned here,” Chambers said. “I know college will be another level, but I already have a wealth of knowledge in me because of my teachers.”

Congratulations to each of you! I join your family, friends, teachers, and mentors in expressing pride in who you are and what you have accomplished.
Your teachers and I have enjoyed watching you grow throughout high school to find your identity as a class, and we feel confident in the wonderful adults you are becoming. As I consider what distinguishes your class from those who have come before you and those who will follow, the qualities that come to mind are your joy and camaraderie with one another.
You are each so uniquely gifted, and on the surface, quite different from one another in many ways. What I have admired over your high school career is the manner in which you have found ways to compliment one another, strengthen one another, and find common ground. You have worked hard, stayed the course, found joy in the small things, and helped others along the way.
This is your time to shine and you’ve earned it. The world may seem big and intimidating, but it’s full of opportunities. You are uniquely gifted to offer something of great value and you’re ready to rise to the challenge. When it’s time to step forward, do so with confidence that you have what it takes and you were made for this.
Welcome to the family!

After playing for the girls’ basketball team at Shelby County High School, Katie McDonald says she has created memories she will cherish forever.
“I played varsity basketball for all four years,” McDonald said. “While it was hard at times, which it definitely can be– it’s a sport– it’s just so rewarding.”
McDonald described her teammates’ impact on her life, not only on the court, but through the friendships they created.
“Playing basketball has definitely played a part in who I am today,” McDonald said. “I’ve met some of my best friends who became like sisters to me. It’s been amazing to see how everyone has grown through the years.”
Along with the relationships she built through basketball, she explained how her teachers showed love and grace to each of their students while, “pouring everything they have into everyone that walks into the classroom.”
Some of her greatest memories have been cheering on her teammates during basketball games, standing in the student section on Friday nights and eating lunch with her friends in their favorite teacher’s classroom. These memories are what she says are the “most memorable.”
McDonald has grown up in Columbiana, and she says that leaving the town and community behind will be difficult for her.
“I’ve grown up with these people and experienced tradition at my high school,” McDonald said. “Generations of my family have gone to school
here, which is so special. Leaving that is going to be one of the hardest things I’ve had to do.”
While McDonald says she’s sad that her high school years are coming to an end, she’s anxiously awaiting a big move to Tuscaloosa. She says that her time in AP and honors courses throughout high school have prepared her for the courses she will take at the University of Alabama.
“I think this school has definitely done an amazing job at allowing me to be involved in so much,” said McDonald. “All the while, making sure that I’m succeeding in everything that I do every aspect of
what I’ve involved myself in, and giving me those opportunities.”
McDonald is grateful for the foundation her teachers have laid for her future, in the classroom and through her faith– making her who she is today.
“They work not they don’t teach me just what’s in their textbook, but they have to teach me so much more than that,” McDonald said.
Optimistic about her future college experience, she plans to study nursing and minor in athletic training. She hopes to one day achieve her goal of becoming a nurse practitioner, working in sports medicine.
Aside from the work she’ll do in the classroom, she’s excited to head into a different environment than that of Columbiana.
“I have friends going to Tuscaloosa with me, and I can’t wait to take on that life with them,” McDonald said. “I’m also excited to get involved with a church there that does mission work.”

Dear class of 2024, Congratulations!
It is crazy to think t hat your educational journey began 13 years ago with kindergarten, when school included naptime and using lots of glue sticks and tiny scissors.
After elementary school came middle school, which had far less glue sticks, but offered important lessons, opportunities and a chance to meet new friends.
High School has been virtual, hybrid, face-to-face, not normal and finally normal. Each of you persevered through it all to reach this milestone. That is to be celebrated and congratulated!
I am so very thankful and proud to be your Principal. It is my
hope that through all of the hard work, tests, projects, victories, defeats, and events that each of you have had fun and made memories that last a lifetime. Thank you for your hard work, ideas, leadership, and for all of the memories that you have given all of us at Spain Park.
Our goals for you will never change:—may you continue to be safe, comfortable and ready to learn so that you can grow, learn and continue to find success AFTER Spain Park. Your diploma will open doors and serve as a ticket to what’s next, and I know that BIG things are next for each of you! Go Jags! Love, Dr. E.

During her four years at Spain Park High School, Evyn Williams played on the girls’ varsity soccer team. She says that she’s been lucky to play alongside teammates that have become family.
“We’ve created a team that’s centered around family,” Williams said. “While the expectation is to do well, we are always supporting and loving each other.”
She also shows appreciation for her coach, Robert Starr, who supports and cares for each of the girls on the team.
Aside from the work Williams has put in on the soccer team, she’s also been a part of the Student Government Association, where she served as president.
“With student government, I interact with a lot of people I probably wouldn’t on a regular day,” Williams said. “Spain

Park is such a big school, so being able to meet new people through my organization has been a blessing.”
Williams has had the opportunity to speak at school events and participate in fun activities during pep rallies. She says that these opportunities have taught her how to be herself without thinking much of what others may think of her.
year I won’t have these people as accessible to me is one of those things that I’m trying my trying to push to the back of my mind,” Williams said.
“Coming up on graduation can be stressful, but having this community here makes it so much easier, and I’m sad to leave it behind.”
Being involved around Spain Park, Williams has gotten to build friendships with many of her peers, but also members of the faculty and staff. This is something she knows she will miss about her high school.

Throughout her time at Spain Park, Williams has been challenged academically. She says the competitive environment has driven her success, along with the opportunity to interact with new people every day.
In the fall, Williams plans to attend Auburn University majoring in biosystems engineering. Her goal is to head into the field of environmental engineering.
“I want to be a part of finding alternatives for things we use in our everyday lives that may be harming our environment,” Williams said.
Along with her interest in her pursuit of a bachelor’s degree, Williams is looking forward to being introduced to a new environment.
“The opportunity I’ll have to grow independently while gaining a degree is a privilege I’m so lucky to have,” Williams said.
“That’s been a big part in preparing me for reaching out and finding my tribe next year,” Williams said. “I owe that to the fact that I think given the opportunity and kind of thrown into the middle of a big group here, I think it’ll help me a lot next year.”

Dear class of 2024,
First, let me say congratulations to each and every one of you! Graduating from high school demands dedication and perseverance. For the last 12 years, you have all worked hard and diligently to get to this point, and the highest congratulations are in order.
Your families, teachers, staff and administrators are so excited to share this time with you. Before you leave, I would like to challenge you to strive to make the world around you better. Whether that’s in a different classroom or in the workplace or in the military or with your family or with your friends, show them all the love and compassion that you desire to have shown to you.
Your high school experience will be something you take with
you throughout your life. Your experiences in the halls of Vincent Middle High School will help shape who you are as you begin your college or work career.
Take all of it, the good and the bad, and use it to make you more fierce, more resilient, and more capable. Go show the world what it means to be a Vincent Yellow Jacket: serve your community, walk proudly, accept responsibility willingly, respect others, and make a difference.
And always remember that Jackets Swarm Together. I am so very proud to have known each of you and I wish you all the best of luck.
Go Yellow Jackets!
Lauren Yancey, Principal, Vincent Middle High School
While attending Vincent High School, Preston Green has had the opportunity to study at CTEC, where he discovered a passion for welding.
“I found welding and it completely rewired me,” Green said. “It changed my vision and my mindset for my future for the better. I even found God through it.”
Green explained that after a rough start to high school, welding helped him find himself. It has been the biggest part of his high school career, along with the mentors he’s had along the way.
Green was recently awarded as one of Shelby County Schools’ Students of the Year, an honor he is amazed he received.

Green believes that high school is all about discovering who you are, much like he did throughout his time at CTEC. He had not had experience with welding prior to his time at CTEC, but after trying it out, he was hooked.

“I was not the best student at the beginning,” Green said. “My teachers continued to push me in the right direction, and that’s when I found my future. I’ve become part of a community and I’m sad about leaving that.”
While leaving his hometown behind, Green knows that the connections he’s made will remain the same.
“Just because I’m moving on, doesn’t mean I will lose my community,” Green said. “I know that my friends and family will still be here for me in the future.”
Green is most looking forward to growing in his professional career while creating new connections through his love for welding.

Westminster senior Gabby Pettagrue has spent her years at Westminster playing volleyball, getting involved with clubs and immersing herself in her schoolwork.
Along with two of her friends, Pettagrue started a culture club at Chelsea.
“We felt as if we weren’t getting enough of an education about cultures aside from American and European cultures,” Pettagrue said. “Every month we bring in someone from a different cultural background.”
Pettagrue explained how her teachers have encouraged and shaped her throughout the years, equipping her with everything she may need to
move into the next phase of her life.
“They’ve taught me how to think, not what to think,” Pettagrue said. “Although I have similar beliefs to the people I go to school with, we don’t all think the same. They’ve given us room to express what we believe, whether it’s in class discussion or individually.”
The confidence and self-expression she’s grown up with at Westminster is something Pettagrue says she will carry with her as she moves on.
Looking forward to her college years, she’s most excited about the freedom in choosing her courses and the possibility of participating in a variety of campus organizations. Pet-
Congratulations on your graduation! We began this year by thinking about the tension you would experience as a senior: that you would wrestle with having divided attention between this year and the years to come. Many of you have reflected on the understandable challenge of thinking so much about the future that you struggle to live fully in the present. While this year of your life is certainly unique, in many ways, this tension – of moving your attention back and forth between the present and the future – is one that you will navigate often in the years to come.
This transition to your next steps after high school also provides an opportunity to reflect on your experiences and achievements that led you to where you are. Such achievements of the thirty-eight of you include athletic state titles, recognition as scholar-athletes, victories in art and robotics competitions, academic awards (including four perfect ACT scores, in addition to four National Merit award winners), and numerous college scholarships. You have written and presented a thesis to an audience of your peers and faculty. You have served and led well on athletic teams, through the House system, and other clubs and organizations.
As we celebrate these achievements, we also consider that many of the best learning opportunities have come not only through experiences of external success but also through struggle. Whether considering your achievements or your struggles, we are not simply celebrating your efforts; we are also celebrat-
tagrue has yet to decide where she will attend college, but she has her choice between the University of Georgia or the University of Michigan.
Pettagrue plans on majoring in neuroscience if she attends Michigan, or Psychology with a focus in neuroscience if she ends up in Georgia.
“Neuroscience is something I’ve always been interested in,” Pettagrue said. “My goal is to become a doctor, so I think taking courses in something that intrigues is important in order to stay on the premed track.”
While she will be moving away from home, Pettagrue is optimistic about the time she will spend at either school.
“I think it’s important to get away from where I grew up in order to grow into who I’m supposed to be,” Pettagrue said. “Obviously my purpose in college is to get my degree, but becoming an individual is important too.”
Leaving Westminster, Pettagrue explained what she would say to a young person just coming into high school.
“I recommend for everyone to get involved with some kind of extracurricular,” Pettagrue said. “Everything I was involved in has helped shape me into the person I’m becoming. Involvement is such an amazing way to meet people and make connections, whether its inside or outside of school.”
ing God’s work in and through you.
On the one hand, it is right for each one to hold a sense of pride in your accomplishments so far! On the other hand, there will be an ever-present enticement to use your gifts for self-promotion. Remember that accolades, achievements, and recognition are not sources of ultimate satisfaction.
Our school’s theme verses for the year include Psalm 16:11: You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. The path of life that is commended is not a life based on accomplishments or externally-recognized success. Rather, the path to life comes from taking refuge in God and seeing His goodness. Said another way, we do not find refuge in our work, but rather in the work of Christ, and our identity is rooted in that truth.
God has given you remarkable gifts, and I am thankful for each of you. Your call is to be a steward of your gifts, both for the glory of God and the good of others. My hope and prayer is that you will rest in God being at work in all things and strive for growth with that truth in mind. I am proud of your work so far, and I look forward with great anticipation to seeing how you will use your lives to serve God and others.
