ON THE COVER

Nestled in Nature

The Lehmans' mid-century modern estate is a beautiful testament to timeless craftsmanship.

AA particular lens of which I’ve adopted to view life involves perceiving problems as challenges just waiting to be solved. This mindset weathers storms with an entrepreneurial spirit–one grounded in resilience, passion and above all, distinctive ingenuity.

Such creativity I like to call one’s authorship–his testimonial journey–and often, the best characters living out these tales are underdogs. In modern day life, there is no one more worthy of such praise than small business owners.

Sherri Springer, whose story I had the pleasure of featuring on page 13, lost her mother–her closest confidant–to cancer after a years-long battle. Sherri turned to art–particularly painting–to physically express her emotions and process her grief. Without her even realizing it, Sherri’s artwork was noticed online by an art gallery in New York City, which not only displayed her work, but also helped her gain national recognition for her talent.

Two other small business owners, Danny and Tammy Sample, have spent the last 30 years together in different cities, states and even continents–thanks to Danny’s military career. One day, he and Tammy set out on a new adventure–homebrewing–and turned their newfound hobby into one of the most popular breweries in the state of Alabama, Siluria Brewing Company (page 31).

Freezy’s Creamery–the brainchild business of entrepreneurs Rod and Melinda Howe–is a walk-up ice cream shop, specializing in unique ice cream flavors that are all made in-house with natural ingredients. Although neither of them have culinary experience, Rod and Melinda decided to venture into the ice cream industry and developed all of their own original recipes. Their story (page 40) is one of risk versus reward.

While I didn’t necessarily set out to feature just small businesses in this issue, I ended up finding some of the most amazing individuals whose faith, unlike most others, propelled them to accomplish their dreams–no matter how far-fetched. Their testimonies of resilience and determination are ones I feel most privileged to share with you all, readers.

As you all read this issue, I hope you all feel empowered to chase after your dreams and realize the only difference between dreamers and doers is the faith to try something new.

Cheerfully,

ARTS CULTURE&

CHERISHING DETAILS

Sherri Springer’s beautiful outlook on life is evident in the details she paints into her artwork.

TThe beauty of a blank canvas is its emptiness–its clean slate onto which an artist’s humanity is born in vivid color and raw emotion. Such stories often depict the fragility of life, and more importantly, the power in cherishing life’s little moments by remembering them through painting.

For most of her life, Sherri Springer would have said creativity is simply a passion of hers, not the foundation for her career. Hailing from Montgomery, Alabama, Sherri attended Auburn University at Montgomery, majoring in human resource management.

After graduating, Sherri worked in various positions, including working as the public relations representative for the Alabama Housing Finance Authority for 12 years. It was not until 2015 that Sherri made her first-ever move away from her hometown to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, for a change of scenery.

Unfortunately, that same summer Sherri’s mother was diagnosed with cancer. Sherri and her sister spent the next four years caring for their mother, and Sherri moved from Alabama and Florida several times—feeling torn between navigating her new life in Florida and spending time with her selfless, sweet mother.

“My mom and I were close, and we all went through that the best we could,” Sherri says of her mother’s passing in 2019. “I started painting for my mind–emotional healing. Grief will change you when you lose [a loved one]. It can be really lonesome–really tough. That is something I really latched onto for several reasons.”

Sherri’s mother–a talented oil painter herself–gave Sherri a Coldwater Creek catalog, urging her to try and paint some of the picturesque landscapes featured–just for fun. Looking back, Sherri says she underestimated how therapeutic art can be, much less how the bond she shared with her mother only grew as she followed in her mother’s footsteps as an artist.

“Each time my brush touched the canvas, my mind and heart temporarily seemed to rest as I was

desperately trying to grasp the reality around me,” Sherri says.

After her mother’s passing, Sherri focused on healing her grief through painting. Little did she know that just shy of two years later, her life’s trajectory would change.

In 2021, Sherri was contacted by the Agora Gallery in Manhattan, New York. The curators noticed Sherri’s art online and wanted to represent

her artwork in one of their upcoming exhibits, completely blowing Sherri away.

Sherri began painting to process losing her mother. Yet, it was her grief-stricken paintings whose moody hues and bold, expansive brush strokes that caught the attention of the gallery and later on, art enthusiasts worldwide.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Sherri says. “I was so humbled and so excited. I hold onto those memories

and how it began. I feel like God has blessed me with this talent, and I am meant to share it.”

One of Sherri’s abstract paintings, “Ethereal Dance,” served as the inspiration piece for the Agora Gallery’s exhibition’s title that year: “Ethereal Dance: A Winter’s Dream.” Being a guest of honor at the gallery’s opening reception was one memory Sherri says she cannot wait to tell her mother about one day.

“Art has a whole new meaning [to me] now,” Sherri says. “It generates encouragement. It means a lot to me to take the things that I love–nature, companionship, feelings of positivity–and try to translate those on the canvas. I want to encourage others to realize just how precious each moment is in life.”

In 2023, Sherri took another leap of faith and moved to her favorite “big, Southern city,” Birmingham–Shelby County, to be exact. Between the inspiration she now draws from urban cityscapes downtown or picturesque sceneries, Sherri says her creativity has never felt more invigorating.

One hallmark of Sherri’s artwork is her dare to defy the confines of color theory and form, capitalizing on abstract expressionism or loose-style techniques that prioritize rendering light and emotion from visually-soft depictions. One of her most beautiful landscapes, “Sunset on 30A,” features rolling puffs of cumulus glazing over a rich, autumn sunset slowly disappearing into the royal tides swaying in the

distance.

Another one of Sherri’s most meaningful paintings, “Among Us,” portrays the light that faith holds over fear in a simple but strong assertion of an angel marching through the black–head held high.

“I painted another [piece] full of color and texture in January called, ‘Living in The Moment,’” Sherri says. “It is all about joy, nature, hope and living in the moment. If you ever feel yourself kind of drifting off into negativity or things that bog you down, snap out of it. There’s life going on right now, and you’re blessed to be doing it right now. That’s what living in the moment was inspired by.”

Sherri hopes that her art inspires people to cherish every precious moment spent with those one calls dear. Regrets are a heavy burden to bear, and often, those whose hearts have the most room to love seem to weigh the heaviest.

After all, love is the tie that binds one’s heart to another–a bridge of humanity shared between some of the bravest in life. For Sherri, that tie reaches high to the heavens.

While she knows she will one day be reunited with her mother, Sherri says she will continue living her life as her mother did—faithfully serving the Lord, never taking relationships for granted and cherishing life’s little moments by painting them into existence on the canvas.

CALLING ALL “ARTONAUTS”

This July, the Shelby County Arts Council is blasting off to space for an adventurous art camp.

Art instructors Lynn Dodson, Chris Cruz and Edna Booker are taking campers to the stars and beyond with three great space-themed art camps. This year we will be focusing on the awe and wonder of space exploration while creating awesome, space-themed art projects. Campers will be inspired to create “out of this world” works of art using a variety of art mediums. They will also learn about a remarkable artist named Nicole Stott, who is also a retired astronaut with NASA! Art camp with Chris Cruz (ages 9-12) will be from July 8-12; Edna Booker’s art camp (ages 5-8) will be July 15-19; and the final week of camp with Lynn Dodson (ages 9-12) will take place from July 22-26. All supplies are provided for each camp. Visit shelbycountyartscouncil.com for more information and to register.

Opening in the EBSCO Fine Art Gallery on Thursday, July 25 is the latest exhibit, “Embodied: Contemporary Takes on the Dress.” According to the exhibit statement, “This exhibition came together organically at the onset of a worldwide pandemic and lockdown. Touching base with colleagues in the early days of a new reality gave clarity to a collective inclination to create dresses for the purposes of telling personal stories. Thirteen artists working respectively on each piece and communally toward

the greater exhibition helped create an immersive study into individuality, semiotics, joy, sorrow and humanity. Each dress is a visual narrative drawing from observation and experience. The hope, as you reflect on this retrospective, is that you find a piece of yourself in one or more of these dresses.” This exhibit, led by curator and artist Leanna Lesley, features 13 one-of-a-kind, mixed-media sculptural takes on the dress. The gallery opening reception will take place on Thursday, July 25 from 6-8 p.m. This reception is free and open to the public. This exhibit will be on display until Thursday, Sept. 5.

Don’t miss our great shows in the Song Theater this summer! Sean of the South joins us for two more installments of his “On the Air” series on Sunday, July 14 and Sunday, Aug. 18. Doors open at 3:30 p.m., and the shows start at 4 p.m. If you’re a Johnny Cash fan, then you won’t want to miss the tribute band CashBack on Saturday, Aug. 3. SCHOOL SPORTS&

PITCH PERFECT

The Oak Mountain High School Eagles win the 2024 Class 7A boys soccer state championship.

PHOTOS BY DAWN HARRISON

AAfter the full-time whistle blew and the Oak Mountain Eagles mobbed their teammates to celebrate winning the state championship, players and coaches embraced one another in tearful hugs. The 3-0 victory over the Auburn High School Tigers in the 2024 Class 7A boys soccer state championship game on Saturday, May 11 at John Hunt Park represented more than just another title.

To the Eagles, it was a breakthrough moment after two years of heartbreak and seven years of waiting, a crowning achievement to an undefeated 29-0-1 season with a No. 2 ranking in the nation by MaxPreps entering the match and perhaps most importantly, the last moment they will spend together on the pitch.

“I’m emotional not because we won another championship,” David DiPiazza, Oak Mountain High School’s head boys soccer coach, says. “I am incredibly sad that I am at the end of this time with this group of kids. I’m not going to lie. I’ve been doing a lot of crying, and it has nothing to do with winning a championship or even being in a championship. It’s just this group is so special and such incredible kids. Our parents are incredible, our fans, our community. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever been a part of. And honestly, I’m sad. I’m sad that it’s over.”

Oak Mountain started the game on the front foot, as has been their style, but they were met with a stingy Auburn defense throughout the half. The Eagles sent a ball up to Aidan Riley in the fifth minute, but the Tigers keeper challenged it.

Later, in the 12th minute, Oak Mountain tried the cross again, this time to Nate Joiner, but his header missed the frame. Oak Mountain continued to dominate possession in the attacking half of the field, but Auburn broke through for a big chance in the 19th minute.

The Tigers went on a breakaway towards the box, but the Auburn attacker tripped over his own feet to allow Alexander Chaide-Cruz to collect the ball. Another free kick cross from Oak Mountain in the 22nd minute went to Luke Jovanovich along the left post with the keeper there to cover it.

It’s that bond and that brotherhood that will bend like we did in the Chelsea game, will bend like we did against Oconee, but we’re not going to break.
- David DiPiazza

The Eagles were unable to break through on set pieces as they were either defended well or went the other way due to an Oak Mountain foul during the play. Then, in the 29th minute, the Eagles had one of their most dangerous opportunities of the half with a ball sent to the top of the box, but it was cleared out of the danger area by Auburn for a corner kick.

The Tigers continued getting back quickly to contest balls and keep Oak Mountain off the score sheet all the way until the half as the teams went into the halftime huddles tied 0-0. The Eagles kept knocking at the door at the start of the second half with two blocked shots in the 42nd minute and a cross by Aidan in the box in the 50th minute that was blocked.

But then, the dam finally burst thanks to the breakthrough goal. After Oak Mountain won a corner kick in the 51st minute, the ball bounced off a pair of heads and towards the top of the box.

There, Gabe Capocci settled the ball with his right foot before turning and bending a shot with the same foot just over the goal line. With that goal, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead, and the emotional release helped propel them to even more success the rest of the way.

Two minutes later, Luke sent a shot over the goal as Oak Mountain kept up the pressure over the next few minutes. Just before the hydration break in the 60th minute, Auburn sent a dangerous ball in off a free kick, but after the ball bounced around, Coan Park’s shot went left of the goal.

That was one of two shots on the day for the Tigers, neither on goal as Alexander and the defense secured the clean sheet. Shortly after a breakaway run was cleared in the 62nd minute, Nate made another run up the left wing and sent a pass towards the front of the goal.

In the little moments and major milestones of childhood, we are here for our patients and their families – helping, healing, teaching and discovering.

The ball just got past the keeper and landed near the right post for Aidan, and he rifled the shot into the top shelf to double up the lead. While both teams continued to battle, the Eagles struck once more to put a stamp on perfection.

In the 71st minute, Luke settled the pass he

received and weighted a perfect forward ball to the front of the goal. Gerardo Rodriguez won the race to the goal and leaped for the header to score, giving his team an insurance goal with a 3-0 lead.

That sealed the deal for Oak Mountain as it saw out the 3-0 win and won its first state championship since 2017. After the game, David says his team’s plan of attack was no different from the rest of the season.

He knew if they got consistent chances and kept possession, a breakthrough goal would come eventually like it did in the semifinal against Huntsville.

“We just try to keep the ball, play good soccer, make them chase us, wear them down, possess the ball,” David says. “We knew we’ll get chances. It’s a matter of time. Honestly, it’s nothing different than what we’ve done all year, and we haven’t changed the way we played. We just do the same thing and it just works.”

To find success with those tactics once again, David says it meant channeling the bonds forged throughout the season to overcome adversity. He looked back at the months of bonding that the team had, from dinner on Jekyll Island with the girls team to bus rides together to a team trip to Topgolf the night before the title game. He said those moments turned them into something closer than a team: “A family,” and one that made the difference in winning or losing a championship.

“It’s that bond and that brotherhood that will bend like we did in the Chelsea game, will bend like we did against Oconee, but we’re not going to break,” David says.

That bond took years of work and struggling through heartbreaking losses to Daphne in the 2022 state championship game and to Huntsville in the 2023 Final Four to achieve their goal of a championship.

David credits those 2022 and 2023 teams for helping lay the groundwork for this year’s team to use those failures as motivation to propel them towards fulfilling a dream which was years in the making.

“This core group of players, it’s almost been a project,” David says. “It’s not just about this group, it’s about the guys we had last year, and the guys we had the year before. We haven’t really graduated a lot of kids in the last three years, and it’s been a culmination of hard work over the past three years, and to get back to the championship game after getting here two years ago, it’s honestly a relief. I know the guys are tired. I think we’re all kind of exhausted and just incredibly happy and proud.”

That joy was evident after the game as the team embraced one another and celebrated together. While fielding questions following the championship win,

the players ran up to David and gave him a Gatorade bath before mobbing their leader in celebration. It was just one more moment that brought the team together and another memory that will live on in everyone’s minds for years to come.

“Ranking teams is definitely hard to do,” David says. “It’s my first time I’ve ever coached a team that’s undefeated, just the guys, it’s got to be up there at the top. They’re such a tremendous group of people, and I’ll never forget them.”

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Dr. Crystal Bennett Dean of the College of Health Professions at the University of Montevallo

PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

A Pensacola native, Dr. Crystal Bennett has spent the last 20 years of her career in nursing education. Crystal attended the University of West Florida (UWF), where she earned her BSN. She went on to receive her Master’s in Nursing Education with a concentration in adult health from the University of South Alabama, and afterwards, she taught for 20 years at UWF, eventually becoming the Director of the School of Nursing. During this time, Crystal also earned her PhD from the University of Florida, studying the positive effects of adaptive line dancing in senior adult patients with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Now, Crystal is the Dean of the College of Health Professions and an Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Montevallo. Here, she shares her thoughts on her new role.

Why did the University of Montevallo decide to open the College of Health Professions?

The university started this process several years ago to meet the needs of the state and the community. They recognized there’s a need for nurses in the local surrounding communities, as well as in the state of Alabama. There’s a national nursing shortage that came to light during the pandemic, and the university is positioned to where it is located to serve students within a 50-mile-radius. Because we have a smaller class size environment, students can really build those relationships with their faculty. This all contributes to improving the health of those in the community.

What majors will the College of Health Professions offer?

It’ll have nursing, exercise science and nutrition sciences this fall semester. That’s going to be great and offer some interprofessional opportunities for our students. In fall 2025, the university will add speech language pathology and social work. I’m very excited because at my

previous institution, I was part of the college of health, and I have seen the benefits of having like-minded programs under the same roof.

How many teachers and students have already joined the program for the fall 2024 semester?

Including myself, there’ll be four, fulltime nursing faculties. We are looking to admit 24 students for what we call the prelicensure BSN program. We’re also going to offer a RN to BSN program track. That program is for those that are already registered nurses, but they have their associate degrees and are now ready to pursue their BSN. Starting off small is ideal because we can give those students the support they really need to be successful.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role?

I am looking forward to getting to know the faculty and the students at campus. I know nursing is going to be a popular major because that’s just kind of a given wherever

you go. I want to know what other exciting programs are at Montevallo. We will begin to explore and examine as a new college how we can support the existing faculty, staff and existing students this fall. That’s very important to me–not only growing as a college and adding new programs, but also how we can ignite excitement around our existing programs and give them the attention that they deserve.

How do you hope the College of Health Professions specifically benefits the Montevallo community?

I love talking and working with the media on ways to showcase the students and faculty and programs. I really enjoyed that, and there’s some exciting things ahead. If somebody hasn’t heard about Montevallo yet, I’m hoping to help change that narrative.

BREWING FELLOWSHIP

Siluria Brewing Company transforms conversations into friendships with every brew.

PHOTOS BY UNTOLD IMAGERY

TThe sweetest moments in life are often at the tail end of victory–a celebratory cause deemed best shared between friends. In Shelby County, one such brewery fosters a hub for community and a plethora of desirable beverages–Siluria Brewing Company.

Oddly enough, founders and owners Danny and Tammy Sample never foresaw themselves as craft brewers, much less those of one of the most successful breweries in the state.

Hailing from Columbus, Mississippi, Danny attended Mississippi State University (MSU), majoring in business administration and human resources management. In 1985 during his freshman year, he enlisted in the Mississippi Army National Guard, and in 1987, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in Armor through MSU’s ROTC program.

After graduating from MSU, Danny earned his Master’s in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. He went on to serve in a variety

of units, including the 155th Armored Brigade. He also served as a platoon leader, executive officer, company commander and S3 through Mississippi’s Army National Guard.

In the early ‘90s, Danny met Tammy, and he says it was love at first sight. In 1999, the dynamic duo moved to Alabaster, where they have called home ever since. Now approaching 30 years of joyful union, both Danny and Tammy say their journey in opening a craft brewery was anything but conventional.

“I never thought about being an entrepreneur after I got out of college,” Danny says. “I was always just thinking I was going to go work in business and just have a nine-to-five-type job and go from there. The closer I got to my army retirement, I thought, ‘What if I went into business for myself?’ We’ve always worked for someone else, and we wanted to be able to jump on our own ideas and take our own role as leaders in business.”

Thank You for Your Service, Commander Sample

As the Commander of the Department of Alabama, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Danny Sample has spent the majority of his life in the U.S. military, fighting for the ideals of liberty and justice for all Americans. A Legacy Life member of Lance Corporal Thomas Rivers, Jr. Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12185, Danny has committed much of his time in retirement to promoting the health and welfare of other veterans. His numberone priority remains taking care of the selfless men and women in uniform who have served their country well. To learn how you can support local veterans, visit alvfw.org.

Danny spent the majority of his career serving in the military. One of his most notable accomplishments came from serving overseas in Baghdad, Iraq, where he earned his Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) eligibility for Operation Iraqi Freedom II in 2004-2005. There, he served as a Deputy Commander in the Rear Operations Center and in the 1st Cavalry Division.

Returning home from Iraq, Danny was promoted as the Deputy Director for Military Support through the Mississippi National Guard in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He served in this role until November 2005, and in February 2006, he joined the U.S. Army Reserve.

Danny advanced to serve as a battalion commander and chief of staff of two different army reserve divisions. He also worked with U.S. ForcesKorea in reviewing the Combined Forces Command–a service under joint management of the U.S. Forces, South Korean Forces and United Nations partner forces.

Finally in June 2021, Danny retired after 36 years in uniform. His career boasts an impressive lineup of awards and decorations including the Legion of Merit; Bronze Star Medal; Meritorious Service Medal (with four Oak Leaf Clusters); Army Commendation Medal (with one Oak Leaf Cluster); Army Achievement Medal; Iraqi Campaign Medal (with two campaign stars); Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Humanitarian Service Medal; Combat Action Badge; and the Mississippi Magnolia Medal.

However, Danny maintains that Tammy is the real hero of his military career–she held down the fort during his deployment, managed her own career and even raised their three outstanding children, never batting an eye. He attributes his success to Tammy’s unwavering love and support.

“It was challenging at times, raising three boys while Danny was deployed,” Tammy says. “We relied on each other and our community to help us through those times, which is why I feel it is so

important now to give back to the community through the brewery and the VFW Auxiliary.”

The Samples’ travels for Danny’s military career allowed them to taste test some delicious beverages across the country, sparking their idea to begin homebrewing. For Danny and Tammy, homebrewing was something they could do together. Beer also just simply tasted better when they were with each other; thus, the concept of Siluria Brewing Company was born.

On Nov. 10, 2018, Danny and Tammy opened Siluria Brewing Company in the former post office building on 1st Avenue West in Alabaster. The name, “Siluria,” pays homage to the former town that was incorporated into Shelby County years prior.

“We wanted a place where people in Alabaster could come and enjoy craft beer and enjoy the atmosphere with their families and friends,” Danny says. “[Siluria Brewing Company] gives people in the community a chance to share experiences with

one another and even get to know their neighbors.”

Now boasting a menu of 12 different craft beers, four wines, two ciders and even a nonalcoholic root beer option, Siluria Brewing Company has become a staple in Shelby County for its “eclectic authenticity.” Every menu item is made fresh, inhouse.

A fan favorite, the Boxcar Blonde is an Americanstyle blonde beer with medium hop bitterness. It sports an autumn-gold hue, pours clear and offers a clean malt profile with notes of crisp apple.

The signature IPA–the Quarry–is a standard West Coast IPA with high hop bitterness, featuring Cascade and Simcoe Hops. Its subtle flavors of pine and grapefruit offer a rich, smooth taste.

“Our Lady Grace, which is a pomegranate wheat beer, is also one of our very popular, in-house beers,” Danny says. “It is a wheat beer that we actually add pomegranate to during the fermentation process. You’re going to get some floral aroma with pomegranate.”

Every flavor profile is unique and is one that Danny and Tammy have invented, themselves. The Esperanza Mexican Lager, which is their rendition of a “South-of-the-border” Mexican Lager, is brewed the traditional, German way and yields a strong scent and taste–the perfect beer for the summer season.

Dubbed a summer shindig beer, the Blueberry Sour, which is a a kettle-soured wheat ale with blueberries and German hops, boasts a bright, fuchsia hue, making this selection one of the most

interesting on the menu. While Siluria Brewing Company is most known for its delicious beer variety, one would be remiss not to try any of the wines or ciders.

The Sauvignon Blanc–a sophisticated choice–is an easy, white wine with a delicate flair of green, herbal flavors, light mint and a decadent fruity aroma. The Pinot Noir, too, is a great choice as its smooth finish and rich undertones of blackberry and currant make this selection perfect for any occasion.

The ciders are always on rotation, but the Raspberry Lime Cider is in season this summer and sports bold flavor profiles that are rich in raspberries with a hint of lime. The Peach Mango Cider, which combines peaches, mangos and crisp apple flavors together, is a sweet thirst quencher that cleverly balances sweet and sour tastes.

Although Siluria Brewing Company’s menu speaks for itself, what is even more impressive about the brewery is that it has become a hub for fellowship. Early on, Danny and Tammy held a logo-design contest, inviting local artists to design what would be the business’s new logo. They eventually decided on a design featuring one of the area’s old water towers, paying homage to the community’s rich history.

“Through that contest we met our future board of directors–a couple who also are now our vintner and management at the brewery and who have also become our lifelong friends," Tammy says. "That experience really helped us form the purpose of being community-oriented. Since the beginning, we have really aimed to use our platform to help propel those in our community with services, purpose and talents to offer.”

No matter the day, if Siluria Brewing Company’s doors are open, people from all walks of life usually from all over the state of Alabama and beyond will be indoors, bonding, laughing and trying the “next best drink” on the menu. If nothing else, Danny and Tammy believe what they have created is a testament to the ties of fellowship in Shelby County, and like everything else they do, they pledge to serve their customers wholeheartedly, fostering community between all of their newfound friends.

After all, the sweetest moments in life are often shared between friends over a cold beer.

Siluria Brewing Company is located at 145 1st Avenue West in Alabaster. For more information on beverages or events, visit siluriabrewing.com.

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Rod and Melinda Howe

Founders and Co-Owners of Freezy’s Creamery

PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, Rod and Melinda Howe moved their family to Helena, Alabama, for Melinda’s teaching career. Melinda teaches fifth grade language arts at Crestline Elementary School, and Rod previously was in the insurance industry. Upon moving to Helena, they came across a small town ice cream shop and decided they wanted to venture into the ice cream business because it seemed like fun. Together, the Howe family opened Freezy’s Creamery in March 2019, renovating the former space to make the creamery a “walk-up” ice cream shop. Here, Rod and Melinda provide an “insider’s scoop” on the ice cream business.

Why was it important to change the functionality of the building, prior to opening?

In speaking with the owner of the building, Mr. Habshey, we talked about us getting a walk-up ice cream shop, which he was very excited about because that meant restoring the building to the original look. We had one of the doors on the side of the building taken out, and we put in a window. None of our ice cream is branded. Rod and our son, Blake, make all of the ice cream that we sell here in the shop, which we believe contributes to the wholesome, family-oriented atmosphere of the business.

What distinguishes Freezy’s Creamery from other similar businesses in the area?

All of our flavors are made in-house. Our customers get ice cream that majorly will be made same-day. One of the other ways we’re different is since we’re a walk-up ice cream shop, our customers don’t come up to a dipping cabinet and look at the ice cream and pick what they want. They order it from the menu board, and this also allows

us to keep the ice cream where it can stay fresh. Our main priority is serving our customers premium ice cream that is always fresh and high quality.

What are some fond memories y’all have made at Freezy’s Creamery?

We have seen couples come here that were dating, but by next season, they’re married. Then a year goes by, and they’re having children and bringing their children here for their first ice cream cone. We actually had a woman who has been coming to our ice cream shop since we opened. She recently got married, and right after their wedding, she–still in her wedding dress–came with her husband to have ice cream at Freezy’s. Also, one of our former customers, Melinda Porter, now works with us. Between Melinda and all of our children working at the shop, we have been able to build our brand as a family, which is our most special memory of all.

How are flavors chosen for the menu?

There are four main flavors that we always

have: sweet cream vanilla, Boss Chocolate, strawberry and Buck Ton of Oreos, which is named after Buck Creek in Old Town Helena. The rest of our flavors will rotate in and out. One of the other things that we make here are fresh waffle cones. Customers will get a cone that is either made just for them when they order or has been made within the last 10 minutes.

What would you recommend to newcomers?

If a customer came to our shop for the first time, we’d recommend the Boss Chocolate, which is our signature chocolate flavor that we make. It’s dark and rich and has four different types of cocoa in it. It has some chocolate flakes in it as well.

Freezy’s Creamery is located at 4025 Helena Road. It is open Wednesday through Friday from 3-8 p.m.; Saturday from noon to 8 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Follow Freezy’s Creamery on Facebook to stay up to date on the latest flavors and happenings.

NESTLED IN NATURE

Herman and Susan Lehman’s mid-century modern home is the rare definition of architectural beauty.

PHOTOS BY KELSEA

HHailing from Central City, Kentucky, Susan Lehman has lived all across Alabama but has called Shelby County home for the last 30 years. She and her husband, Herman Lehman, who is a former City Clerk for Montevallo, love the small-town feel and all of the close-knit friendships they have made serving their community.

Their joyful union–approaching a milestone of 35 years this December–blossomed as they met at “The Magic City Skyliners,” which was a club for “vertically enhanced” individuals at the Homewood Public Library.

After tying the knot in 1989, Susan and Herman set off on a course to change the world. Susan says she has always enjoyed helping people–especially children, which is why she started her career in education.

Susan received her Bachelor’s and her Master’s in Special Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and later on, she received National Board Certification in Early and Middle Childhood Literacy. She taught special education for 24 years before opting for a career change.

With some encouragement from Herman, Susan decided to capitalize on her networking skills and earned her real estate license in 2012. Twelve years later, Susan is now the founder and principal broker of Team Lehman at Keller Williams, whose accolades

include the highly esteemed Keller Williams Platinum Award for Most Volume Sold by a Real Estate Group. Susan’s favorite part of her job is fostering relationships with clients, and in fact, it was through one such friendship that Susan came across what would be her and Herman’s dream home. Susan toured the home for an initial consultation and ended up going home, telling Herman she was not going to list the house because she was going to buy it.

Built in 1978, the Lehmans’ dream home sports wood walls, floors and ceilings with floor-to-ceiling windows and a gigantic skylight that illuminates the house’s open concept in the daytime. Upon moving in, the Lehmans first removed the built-in atrium from the open concept, laying a concrete foundation and replacing all of the open concept’s flooring. They then focused on adding a load-bearing center post to pitch the roof and replaced the glass skylight, which at nightfall boasts an even more beautiful view than in the daytime.

Out of all the places they have lived together, Herman and Susan say none come close to their humble abode–the embodiment of rare, architectural beauty. Even so, the relationships they have made here in this community are what they say make Montevallo worth calling home.

ON THE FARMSTEAD

The best-kept secret in Shelby County is none other than family-owned and operated Stone Hollow Farmstead–a charming farm located in quaint Harpersville, Alabama.

MOORE
PHOTOS BY STONE HOLLOW FARMSTEAD

TTrading clear, blue skies for urban skyrises, Alexandra Stone Flowers’s entrepreneurial journey began when she first moved from her hometown, Crestline, to Los Angeles, California, in order to study product development at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

Growing up visiting her family’s farm, Alexandra cultivated a love for all things green–living off of the land. Around this time, Alexandra’s mother, Deborah Stone, who was a veteran of the day-spa industry, was also interested in creating her own medicinal skincare line from organically-grown products that she could grow at the farm.

Deborah traveled to various skincare labs, learning about how to make products and what they would cost. While plant-based benefits remained her top priority, she was thrown off, learning that most labs she consulted valued return on investment more than customer satisfaction.

“My mom had a spa, and her passion even back then was skin care,” Alexandra says. “I think she had this way of making women feel exceptionally beautiful, and I loved hearing her passion for it.”

While in college, Alexandra began doing makeup for a few clients, helping her to realize how much she, too, loved making other people appreciate their natural beauty. She enjoyed providing her clients with tools to combat skin issues or even to accentuate facial features they really liked about themselves.

After she graduated and returned home to Alabama, Alexandra and her mother teamed up to transform their family’s farm into their dream business–Stone Hollow Farmstead. Originally, the Stone family purchased the 80-acre farmland in 1999 as a picturesque escape from the urban hustle and bustle of everyday life; however, in 2006, Deborah and Alexandra decided to capitalize on their newfound interest: green, sustainable skin care.

By this point, Deborah was already dabbling in

growing and distilling products from their farm’s garden, and she was eager to teach Alexandra, too. The mother-daughter duo started out making formulations of Plantago major, which is actually an invasive weed with numerous healing properties that most would not know by name but would by sight.

“I think the knowledge of different herbs and how to beneficially use them as ingredients to combat skin concerns was the real journey that we went on,” Alexandra says.

Over the last 18 years, Deborah and Alexandra focused on growing herbs with medicinal properties, eventually branching out to grow and sell flowers, vegetables, dairy products and more. Today, Stone Hollow Farmstead has grown to become a vertically-integrated company, featuring 100 above-ground herb boxes, licensed goat dairy, creamery, cannery and cutflower farm.

The Stone family along with a handful of passionate employees manage the entire estate, growing, distilling and selling all of their own products online and in their permanent storefront in Pepper Place in downtown Birmingham. While the farm is seasonal, the Stone family practices succession planting, where they plant crops in intervals to ensure a continual harvest.

With Christmas being Stone Hollow Farmstead’s biggest retail season, such a style of planting enables the farmers to stock up for their booming fourth quarter. One unique aspect of

Dried Calendula prepped for skincare

the business is that whenever one visits Stone Hollow Farmstead’s store, there will always be new products to sample, thanks to each season’s varying harvests.

Year round, however, customers can always look forward to Botaniko Skin Care products–the brainchild of Deborah and Alexandra’s partnership. This skincare line offers a range of products, including cleansers, elixirs, hydrosols, face masks, CBD products, body satins and more. Every product is made in-house from crops grown at Stone Hollow Farmstead.

One of Botaniko Skin Care’s best-selling products are the hydrosols, which are the water content of a plant yielded from the distilling process. Dubbed as the new aromatherapy, hydrosols offer a healthier alternative because not only are they distilled from fresh leaves, fruits, flowers and more, they are also simply aromatic waters that are easier on the skin, meaning they can be often applied topically with less reactions in comparison to essential oils.

“I think that’s something beautiful and unique that we offer that most people don’t know a lot about,” Alexandra says.

The Post Sun and Burns (Immortelle and Lavender) hydrosol, for example, is made of 100-percent pure hydrosol and is recommended in light spritzes to assist with sunburns and sun poisoning. This natural remedy is a great alternative to corporate, aerosol, after-sun products and is also great for all skin types, especially those with sensitive skin.

While Stone Hollow Farmstead is known for its skincare line,

one would be remiss not to try any of the cannery’s products, such as the Lemon Verbena and Dill Blossom Jelly. According to stonehollowfarmstead.com, “The lemony-tart verbena herb pairs beautifully with savory dill blossoms in this floral jelly, making it a prime-supporting cast member to wherever you choose to use it. Blend a few tablespoons into softened cream cheese and spread on toasted baguette rounds and garnish with fresh dill fronds. Buttery biscuits become more sublime with a generous dollop. Brushing some onto justroasted fish will let the complex flavors melt into its flaky layers.”

These organic jams and jellies are not just great toppings, but they also make delicious salad dressings, salmon glazes, marinating sauces and even useful products to deglaze pans. Several of these products have even been featured on T.V. shows such as “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “Made in America” and more.

The Blissful Breakfast Gift Box, which was listed as one of Oprah Winfrey’s “Favorite Things 2023,” is a handcrafted assortment of wildflower honey, sprouted flour pancake mix, Stone Hollow Floral Honeysuckle Jelly and rose geranium syrup. Alexandra recommends this gift box for anyone looking for the perfect, gender-neutral gift.

“We have a huge commitment to sustainability,” Alexandra says. “When you are purchasing from our family farm, you can rest assured that it’s going to be a high-end product.”

Reflecting back on the last 25 years, Alexandra says she never would have imagined how her family’s farm would grow from a “summertime pastime” to a thriving business. Part of their success, she believes, is from the farm’s location, and better yet, the people who support their mission.

“I think Alabama in general is the best-kept secret, but I think that our local community is really special and puts an emphasis on supporting local businesses,” Alexandra says. “One aspect I love about [Shelby County] is the kindness and the warmth that the community brings. I think that community is important for the local people that we interact with.”

It is because of these community members that Alexandra says she and her family get to do what they love every day. If there is anything more empowering than a fulfilling career, it is that her customers believe in her enough to support her mission, she says.

For that, Alexandra will never stop creating with her customers in mind, thanking each one for turning her family’s dream into a reality.

COMMUNITY LEADERS 2024

It’s the people who make Shelby County the community that it is! Here we recognize some of those making an impact on others around them through their businesses.

Shelby Living

With nearly 50 years of law enforcement experience, and more than half of that experience in executive leadership, Sheriff John Samaniego currently serves as the 54th sheriff of Shelby County. Sheriff John Samaniego’s career has included assignments ranging from patrol officer, narcotics investigator, Chief Deputy, CALEA Commissioner and even service on President Trump’s commission on law enforcement. Throughout the span of his career, he has received the most fulfillment in mentoring young leaders within the law enforcement profession and throughout the community. He takes great pride in watching young professionals develop and deploy their leadership talents in various aspects of service. Sheriff Samaniego has also been awarded “Sheriff of the Year” by his fellow sheriffs across the state for his leadership and service to not only Shelby County, but also the entire law enforcement profession at large.

ALABAMA DENTAL SLEEP AND WELLNESS

Alabama Dental Sleep and Wellness offers sleep apnea and snoring alternatives that don’t involve CPAP. Drs. Albritton and Ardovino have been practicing general dentistry since 2008, where they earned their degrees from UAB School of Dentistry. After graduating, they trained at the Dawson Institute, where they received their fellowships in disorders of the TMJ, worn dentitions and unbalanced bites. Through the years of practice, they recognized a more specialized need for patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea and TMJ disorders and associated muscle pain. Dr. Ardovino became interested in obstructive sleep apnea and started training with the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine to better understand how she could play a role in helping patients with sleep apnea. Her practice is now more heavily focused on helping patients with obstructive sleep apnea and working with their physicians throughout the process. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, which is a distinctive honor that recognizes competency in dental sleep medicine. Dr. Albritton is a fellow with the American Academy of Facial Esthetics and has trained in the use of Botox for esthetics and TMJ disorders. She focuses on helping patients alleviate tension and pain associated with TMJ disorders and bruxism through the use of Botox, splints and red-light therapy. In addition, Dr. Albritton has also trained with the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Drs. Albritton and Ardovino actively continue their training and education, always seeking the best technology and resources to meet their patients’ needs. 100 Colonial Promenade Parkway • Alabaster, AL 35007 205-664-7610 • alabamadentalsleep.com

MY SHELBY COUNTY

ABI DEWILDE

The University of Montevallo’s 2023-24 Gold Side Leader

Get Outdoors

Veterans Park

I personally love going to Veterans Park in Alabaster to be with nature. Regardless if I am walking, running, or playing pickleball, I always enjoy admiring the park’s picturesque scenery.

Fellowship in Community Alabaster CityFest

My favorite event that Shelby County puts on each year is Alabaster CityFest. This summer shindig is such a fun event to attend. I always look forward to the concerts, vendor market and especially, the ample opportunities to enjoy the company of my friends.

Eat Local Birds and Burgers

I think the best place to eat is at Birds and Burgers. The staff is always so friendly. I love to get the bacon ranch chicken wrap with sweet potato fries.

Farewell, Falcons

The University of Montevallo

I absolutely loved my time at the University of Montevallo (UM). UM has brought me so many opportunities, friends and a family for which I couldn’t be more thankful. My time spent at UM will always be something I cherish as it has helped me blossom into the young woman I am today. Through UM, I have been able to embrace my love of learning, as well as enhance my communication skills and many more skills I will use throughout my life.

Tried and True

College Night

One of my favorite memories during college was being able to be this past year’s College Night Leader for the Gold Side. Being able to be a leader truly gave me so many opportunities to connect with not only my community, but also my classmates and faculty. Being the Gold Side Leader gave me an opportunity to do something I love one last time and share that love with so many other individuals.
