FROM THE EDITOR

W

ell, I spoke too soon. In last month’s editor’s note, I said goodbye temporarily and shared that Lauren Dowdle, who serves as editor of our sister publication Hoover’s Magazine, will serve as editor of Shelby Living in the lead up to and during my maternity leave. That is still the plan; we just had to push it back a month thanks to some bad planning on my part. Luckily, you are holding another great issue of Shelby Living. Our January issue features our annual bridal special section, including the weddings of local brides and grooms. I love seeing real weddings from local couples. Each couple has a great backstory and puts a unique spin on the ceremony and reception. The bridal section also features stories on wedding locations in Shelby County. Our county is home to some truly beautiful event spaces. I have been to a wedding at Oak Island, and it was stunning. I was excited to learn about the other equally picturesque event spaces as well. Emily Sparacino spoke to Colleen Hopwood, owner of Bella Couture in

Mt Laurel, about what wedding dress trends to expect in 2016. Brides from Shelby County and the Birmingham area are typically fairly traditional – think lace, ivory and strapless or sweetheart necklines. Boho-chic, featuring flowing gowns with minimal embellishments, remains a popular style for rustic weddings. Of course, this issue isn’t all about weddings. We also highlight Iron City Church in downtown Birmingham. The church has strong ties to the county. It was founded by Valleydale Church in late 2014 and the two congregations share staff members, not to mention a similar culture and vision. Our Arts & Culture section also features some great stories about local artists and upcoming events, so be sure to check it out. I hope everyone has a great start to the New Year!

THE SIMPLE LIFE

Smart Goals! As we turn the pages of the calendar and welcome in 2016, a renewed energy explodes when we think about January. A new year is often looked to as a fresh start, a time when we get serious about creating better habits, erasing past beliefs and embedding consistency into our plans. Resolutions, goals, changes and promises are all interchangeable for Lisa Phillips, intent, ambition and objective. Let’s owner of SimpleWorks, pretend you’ve set a goal to lose Simpleworks.guru weight. It’s important to set yourself lisa@simpleworks.guru 205.981.7733 up for success by remembering this easy acronym: “Smart Way” goal. uSpecific. Make sure you’re very detailed in what you’re striving for. “Losing weight” is too vague. Instead, focus on exactly what this means to you. (I want to lose 25 pounds.) uMeasurable. How will you know if you’re on track and making progress? (Weekly weigh-ins will help you measure your efforts.) uAttainable. Is this healthy for you? Can you reach your goal without change? What change needs to take effect? (Exercise and cutting out sugar.) uRealistic. Losing 25 pounds in 3 weeks is probably not realistic, yet losing a pound a week may be the benchmark you need. (No medical advice here, always check with your doctor.) uTime. Give yourself a deadline. “A goal without a deadline is just a wish.” Having a date you’re working towards (before your Fourth of July cruise) gives you motivation to keep pushing forward. Now, let’s take this a tiny step further. uWritten. Write it down so you see it every day. Goal posters take on many forms—from poster board with glued-on pictures to wallpaper of new clothes on your phone, plus hash marks for each pound lost. uAccountable. Who’s cheering you on? Who’s helping you stay on track? Friend, spouse, doctor? Make sure the person can hold your feet to the fire and celebrate with you. A balance is needed. uYou. You have to be willing to take responsibility and do the work. What started as a loose goal of losing weight is now a precise ambition of: “I will lose 25 pounds before our cruise on July 4 with one pound a week as my focus through exercise and healthy eating.” Now all your goals will be processed with the SMART WAY of thinking and acting. It’s that simple. l

A new month and year is often looked to as a fresh start.

he new year is here and with it new exhibits at the Shelby County Arts Council. Kicking off 2016 is the annual Fine Folk Art show. This popular exhibit is back for its third year with exciting new artists, as well as some returning favorites. Curator Teresa Wamble is ready to once again share the love of folk art with the people of Shelby County. Wamble has a keen eye for artists and has selected a unique group this year. This successful show has opened the doors to many artists in the past and Wamble hopes to continue that tradition. “We are trying to present diversity of media and art styles to a public which may not get a chance to see these talents otherwise,” Wamble said. “Each year we try to introduce new artists and bring back some of our former artists. This is our third show and each one just gets better and better.” This year’s artist lineup includes: uMary Ann Casey, returning painter of ethereal women and critters often painted on large pieces of tin and other salvaged materials uBrian Bohanan, a local artist who focuses much of his art on the image of the Tree of Life uLindsay Dyess, an up-and-coming young artist specializing in lino and woodblock prints uAllen Ham, a sixth-generation potter of the Ham-Miller family of potters

uScott McQueen, a Northport pastor and painter who has a knack for incorporating old license plates and Biblical quotes in his work uShawn Wallace, a preacher and folk painter who uses his memories of life in the mountains to create haunting scenes of Appalachian life uTeresa Wamble, an accomplished gourd artist whose Native American heritage often influences whatever gourd art she dreams up. Also joining the lineup is a very special guest artist – Blossom the pig! Blossom is the talented painting pet pig of Scott McQueen. She paints on cue and even signs her work with a snout print. Join us for the Fine Folk Art opening reception on Jan. 15 from 6-8 p.m. The bluegrass and folk group the Hooteneers will be performing live and Blossom the pig will give everyone a live demonstration of her artistic talents. The art of

carving Bear Jones uses a chainsaw to reveal artistic masterpieces hidden in recycled wood

T

he last year has brought Bear Jones fully onto new paths of possibility. He earned his bachelor’s degree in project management administration University of Montevallo, graduated valedictorian of his class of 2015 and was active as president of the National Honor Society. Along the way, Jones, who was born in 12 | ShelbyLiving.com

Story and photos by LAURA BROOKHART Florida, raised in New York and has lived in Alabama since 2000, has incorporated freelance work in construction and landscaping irrigation as well as work with Southern Company Services in electrical design. In May, after moving to Montevallo, he took up a new venture—wood working with a chainsaw—a creative outlet he had thought about over the past seven years and

knew he wanted to pursue. The week before the November Artstalk, working from the dried cedar trees accumulated in his backyard, he “carved out” time to work on a series of sculptures. The result was a bounteous vignette of fall-themed carvings—cornucopias and pumpkins eye-catchingly styled by his wife, V. Jones. “Much of my work is experimental. I

enjoy finding the object within the tree that calls to me and puzzling out the best technique to bring it forth,” Jones said. In the fourth grade, he was reprimanded for not paying attention in art class where the usual elementary grade coloring projects were taught. Fortunately, he was then placed in the sophomoresenior art classes, where he further was able to develop his level of skill. “Working in wood requires inverse thinking,” he explained. “You are not adding clay balls to clay balls to make an object. Rather, I think of the chainsaw as a great eraser.” There are two methodologies of chainsaw artists— the “blockers” and the “whittlers.” Jones considers himself a whittler. He prefers to finalize each of his carvings from a single piece of wood and recalls that his first carving was of an eagle that began as a fence post. He was disappointed to find within an area of rot that resulted in the final proportions being imperfect. At Artstalk, his alligator, named Matilda, attracted attention lying in the grass next to the sidewalk. “This was my second carving. I started with the head and added the body detail after studying online images of real alligators. I have been criticized for ‘doing too much detail,’ which surprises me,” Jones added. Another sculpture shown at Artstalk was a snowman, also formed from a single log, except for the nose and branch arms. It was purchased along with an order for a second snowman to be given as a gift. The snowmen will be left unvarnished, so that the cedar fragrance may still be enjoyed. Cedar naturally provides reds (the heartwood), yellows and browns and Jones adds definitive shading in deeper tones with a blowtorch. “I use only reclaimed or recycled trees and wood; no live trees are sacrificed for my work,” Jones said. “People call me when they have felled or fallen trees, which I am happy to retrieve.” In his backyard currently is an experimental work in progress that began as a hollow log. “My first idea was to make it into a bookshelf, then

V. and I realized the potential for a one-of-a-kind wine rack. It will hold eight bottles of wine and the top will be carved grape leaves and grapes; the bottom will be tree roots.” Jones will also add a built-in removable cedar tray fitted into the top from which glasses of wine and cheeses may be served. Another developing idea is a bistro table and chairs that will incorporate luminescent powder encased in epoxy within its base to create a glow at night. Contact Jones at 21bear143@gmail.com or visit his Facebook page at Facebook.com/southernchains. l

Staying fit

Setting and achieving successful New Year’s fitness resolutions Story by RYAN PINDROH

I

t’s that time of year, again, when we see a flood of new members at the St. Vincent’s One Nineteen Fitness Center, all with New Year’s resolutions to get back into shape. While we always love seeing new members, we want to make sure that you are equipped to set fitness goals that work long-term. Here are six tips to setting and achieving successful New Year’s fitness resolutions. uSet realistic fitness goals. This sounds easy enough, but I can’t tell you how often I see people starting with a goal of working out every day or wanting to lose significant weight in a short period. Start with a more attainable goal such as working out two times a week and build from there. uFind a fitness buddy. We all live busy lives, and it’s easy to find excuses not to exercise. If you have another person holding you accountable, you are more likely to follow through on your fitness plans. It’s also more fun to have a friend by your side. uPick a workout routine/class you enjoy. Let’s be honest; working out is always going to be hard work, but if you can find an activity you enjoy, you’re much more likely to stick with it longterm. uPush yourself to try new fitness 16 | ShelbyLiving.com

routines. It’s easy to fall into a rut from doing the same workout over and over again, especially when you aren’t achieving your goals. Don’t be afraid to set up an appointment with a personal trainer. They are here to teach you exercises best tailored to your body and help you meet your fitness goals. uHealthy eating goes hand-in-hand with your fitness goals. I know. I know. That’s not what you wanted to hear, but to get the best results with your fitness routine; you also have to consider your diet. Take the time to meet with a registered dietitian who specializes in nutrition and healthy eating. You don’t have to give up all your favorite foods, but learn how to eat in moderation and fuel your body with the energy and nutrition it needs to meet your fitness goals. uIt’s OK to ask for help. It’s OK to ask for help when you’re not meeting

your goals by yourself. The St. Vincent’s One Nineteen personal trainers all hold degrees in exercise-related fields, as well as professional certifications. They are here to help you design a plan tailored to fit your specific needs. St. Vincent’s One Nineteen offers a wide range of fitness offerings, including outdoor and indoor tracks, 25-yard indoor saline pool, 187 pieces of equipment, 85 exercise classes and free childcare. We are currently offering a no enrollment fee and no contract special now through February 29, 2016. IRON CITY A new church in downtown Birmingham has roots in Shelby County Story by KATIE MCDOWELL Photographs by JAKE HUGHES and MEREDITH WATKINS

E

very Sunday evening, a group of mostly young adults gathers at B&A Warehouse in downtown Birmingham. The group is not there for a reception, party or concert, however. They are there to worship at Iron City Church. Although Iron City Church meets every Sunday in Birmingham, it has its roots in Shelby County. Iron City Church was launched in September 2014 by Valleydale Church, located in North Shelby. “It’s a common church (with a) common vision that meets in two different places,” said Jason Dees, who serves as senior pastor of both churches. That vision includes making a greater impact on downtown Birmingham, as well as creating a more ethnically diverse congregation at both campuses. Although Iron City Church has been active for only a little over a year, its history starts in 2007. Dees had recently graduated from seminary and was living in Huntsville. 18 | ShelbyLiving.com

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Campus Pastor Jason Cook leads a service at Iron City Church in downtown Birmingham. A worshipper takes notes during a service. Services are held every Sunday night at 5 p.m.

January 2016 | 19

He and a friend visited Birmingham to attend a concert, and while walking through downtown, he “felt like the Lord gave me a vision” to start a church in the area. “It was one of the moments that I felt like God was speaking to me,” he said. Downtown Birmingham has been revitalized in recent years with new restaurants, entertainment and the relocation of Regions Park. At the time of Dees’ visit, however, downtown had yet to begin its renaissance and was not an obvious choice for a new church. A few years ago, Dees, who was working at First Baptist Church in Covington, Ga., received a call from Valleydale in their search for their new pastor. During his interview, he shared his vision for what would become Iron City Church. Dees accepted a position with Valleydale Church in 2013, and planning for Iron City Church began his first week. In the fall of 2013, the church launched its MAKE Initiative, a two-year plan for “maximizing and broadening the impact of Valleydale’s ministries,” according to the church’s website. One of the goals 20 | ShelbyLiving.com

Iron City Church typically draws about 200-250 people to its Sunday service.

included making a greater impact on the city of Birmingham by planting a church downtown. In January 2014, Jason Cook was hired as campus pastor, and Iron City Church launched that September. The vision for both churches is to build a “multiethnic congregation,” which Dees called a “brand new, bold vision.” Iron City Church’s motto is “For Diversity. For Unity. For the City. For the Glory of God.” Dees said progress has been slow, but church members have championed the idea. Dees said nurturing the culture change in an organic, authentic way will take time, but it is a worthwhile investment. Dees said he is proud of the progress the churches have made in a little over a year. “It’s been hard, but we’re making some headway in both places,” he said. Both churches need more minorities as leaders and elders, Dees said, but those people are typically longtime members of a church. “I think that’s going to take some time,” he said. The two churches share staff, although Cook, Worship Leader Drew Kearney and College Pastor Kameron Pugh spend the majority of their time on Iron City Church. January 2016 | 21

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Cook greets worshippers at Iron City Church, which meets at B&A Warehouse in downtown Birmingham. Song lyrics are displayed on a brick wall so worshippers can sing along. Senior Pastor Jason Dees said Iron City Church typically draws a young crowd of 18-30 year olds.

Dees and Cook split the sermons each week. The Sunday sermons at Valleydale and Iron City typically mirror each other with the same text and theme, although Cook and Dees individualize their sermons. Although there is some crossover between the two churches, the Iron City congregation skews younger. “There are a lot of great worshippers there. It’s a young crowd,” Dees said. “It’s 80 percent 18-30 year olds.” The congregations share a passion for mission work, which Dees said has always been an important part of Valleydale Church. “That DNA spread to Iron City,” he said. “That’s the heartbeat of the church at large.” Today, the two church campuses attract about 1,200 worshippers to their Sunday services. About 200250 people attend Iron City’s evening service, while Valleydale draws about 900-1,000 at two morning services. l January 2016 | 23

Local wedding gown trends reflect national styles Story by EMILY SPARACINO Photographs CONTRIBUTED

any women dream about the moment they will try on a wedding dress and know it’s the one they want to wear when they meet their groom at the altar. But not all brides-to-be know exactly what style of dress they want without researching current trends and knowing what types of gowns and style options are available. Colleen Hopwood, owner of Bella Couture in Mt Laurel, sees thousands of wedding gowns and keeps track of the trends that dominate the bridal market each year. Hopwood examined several local and national trends for the 2016 season. One of the ongoing trends in the Birmingham area is the bohemian, or “boho,” chic look, Hopwood said. “It’s been around for a while,” Hopwood said. The boho chic style features flowing gowns with minimal or no beading, floral or organic lace and short trains (or no trains), perfect for barn weddings and paired with flower wreaths for the hair and asymmetrical bouquets. Hopwood said most brides want strapless, V-neck or sweetheart necklines. Gowns with low or plunging backs are popular, Hopwood said, and lace fit-and-flare gowns are an “across the board” trend. Designer Justin Alexander’s 2016 collection includes lace fitand-flare gowns and gowns with beading, she said. Regarding color, national trends show blush pinks, nude and sand colors topping the list, along with ivory and off-white shades. Local trends are following suit, according to Hopwood. January 2016 | 27

ABOVE: Tattoo lace, which features lace over illusion netting as seen in this Tara Keely gown, is expected to be popular in 2016. RIGHT: This Tara Keely gown features an off-the-shoulder neckline.

“We don’t sell any truly white dresses any more,” Hopwood said. The No. 1 national trend this season was bateau necklines, which are similar to boat necks, creating a “simple and elegant, Audrey Hepburn look,” Hopwood said. Another national trend Hopwood saw at Fashion Week in New York City this year was floral prints. Lazaro, one of the designers Hopwood carries at her shop, finished his collection with a floral-print gown. “You kind of have to have a bold personality to wear a print,” Hopwood said. “It’s very non-traditional.” Prints and heavy brocades were common wedding attire in the Middle Ages and 1900s, she said, noting brides didn’t wear white. “It’s almost like the industry is stepping back in time (with) heavy vintage and Victorian inspiration,” she said. Bell sleeves and high necklines with Mandarin or choker-style collars have entered the market. Another trend among brides, nationally and locally, is a gown that can be transformed into two looks: One for the ceremony and one for the reception. Overskirts can be layered over short or slim gowns to create a ball gown or A-line gown, and then removed for a lighter, more stylish look. Jackets are another trendy way to have two wedding looks without buying two dresses, Hopwood said. Although Hopwood hasn’t added any to her inventory yet, 28 | ShelbyLiving.com

pantsuits for brides entered the national market a couple of years ago. “That’s a trend I’m not so sure is going to trickle down,” she said. Fabrics and materials play a significant role in wedding gowns. Organza is making a comeback, while tulle is waning a bit, according to Hopwood. “A lot of designers are doing English net, also known as “faux silk,” which is a finer weave than tulle,” she said. Tattoo lace and lace-layering to give a dress dimension are popular. “The layering has been around for a few years,” Hopwood said. “Enzoani started doing lace layers a few years ago.” A local trend Hopwood still sees brides gravitate toward is a layered, “fun” hemline with ruffles, tiers or other features of interest. Feathers can also be found on some of today’s gowns. “Most designers use ostrich or swan feathers,” Hopwood said. “They are definitely a one-time wear kind of thing. Feathers really do get into the couture realm.” Regardless of national and local trends, Hopwood emphasized the importance of brides choosing gowns that fit their individual preferences. “It really boils down to what the bride wants and what makes her feel comfortable and what makes her feel beautiful on the day of her wedding,” Hopwood said. l January 2016 | 29

The bridal identity Steps for changing your last name

A

Story by NEAL WAGNER

side from the diamond rings, engagement parties and furious wedding planning, brides-to-be and newlywed women should also plan some trips to government offices both before and after the big day. Brides who want to change their last name have additional trips to make after the wedding day. Before a couple’s wedding day, the bride and groom should take a trip to the Shelby County Courthouse in Columbiana to apply for a marriage license with the Shelby County Probate Court. The probate court is open from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, but court officials request applicants arrive no later than 4 p.m. to allow enough time to complete the process. Marriage license applicants must present a valid government-issued photo identification, and must pay a $43 fee via cash or checks only. The bride and groom must then give the a copy of the marriage license to the ordained or licensed minister or judge who performs the marriage ceremony within 30 days from the date the couple applied for the license.

34 | ShelbyLiving.com

The judge or minister will complete the license and return it to the marriage license clerk, who will mail copies of official license to the bride and groom. After receiving a copy of the marriage license, the bride can use the document to make the other changes necessary after the big day is over. The bride should first take her marriage license to the nearest Social Security office, which can be found by visiting Socialsecurity.gov. After the bride officially changes her name with the Social Security office, she can then change her name on documents such as driver’s licenses and vehicle titles at one of Shelby County’s three driver’s license offices. For a woman to change her name on home- and automobile-related documents, she must bring her updated Social Security card, marriage license and any other required documentation, to the license office in Columbiana, Inverness or Pelham. The license office website at Shelbyal.com outlines the requirements for updating a wide range of documents. l

righam Elise Godfrey, daughter of Vick and Boscoe Godfrey of Birmingham, and Andrew Lee Nail, son of Lee Nail and Kimberly Williams of Birmingham, were married September 26 in Birmingham. The couple met in a Human Development 101 class during their freshman year of college in 2005 at the University of Alabama. Andrew pretended to need help studying; Brigham quickly realized Andrew was too smart to need any help, but she liked his red hair ...so she played along. As they muddled through postconventional moral reasoning together, they decided to go for it and spent the next ten years falling in love. Brigham and Andrew were married at BridgeStreet Gallery and Loft in downtown Birmingham on September 26, 2015. Surrounded by family and friends, the two said their vows to a candlelit Handfasting Ceremony officiated by Tim Mayhall, a chaplain at St. Vincent’s and close friend. Brigham walked down the aisle in a 1930s inspired cream silk dress to “The Winner Is” by Danna Devotchka. She was given in marriage by her brother, Graham Godfrey, who carried a single lit candle in remembrance of their late father, Boscoe. The reception that followed was also held at BridgeStreet Gallery in the upstairs loft. The wedding and reception featured flowers and the artistic endeavors of Christy Downs Todd of CeCe Designs. Magic Muffin provided the threetiered vanilla raspberry-filled bride’s cake with cream cheese icing and an assortment of pies for the whimsical groom’s pie table. Honey-jar wedding favors were a contribution of Brigham’s grandfather, Clyde Gray, who is a beekeeper in Jonesboro, Arkansas. There was never a lull in energy or dancing as DJ Sex Panther of Trim Tab Brewery jockeyed a set not soon to be forgotten by all who attended. Brigham and Andrew were sent off from the reception in her father’s yellow Chevy SSR. “My mother always hated that bright yellow car because it was too ‘garish,’” Brigham said, “but I think that was why my father loved it so much and we can’t seem to part with it, so it only seemed fitting for it to be our get-a-way car for our first car ride as a married couple and tribute to his memory.”

T

he story of Johnny and Kaitlyn is one that revolves around true love. Kaitlyn was a daddy’s girl who was shy and sweet, and beloved by everyone she came across. Johnny was wild and rambunctious, and never at a loss for words. Lo and behold, their fate together would be sealed the first time their paths crossed. Mutual friends introduced Johnny and Kaitlyn when they were students at The University of Alabama. Kaitlyn was tough at first, as she had spent her whole life playing hard-to-get. Johnny, though, was determined. He quickly fell for Kaitlyn’s selflessness, kindness, initiative, and of course, beauty. It didn’t take Johnny long to realize that Kaitlyn was the one for him. On July 20, 2014, Johnny proposed to Kaitlyn. Of course, the proposal involved many of their favorite things, including cheeseburgers, sweets and sunsets. After a long wait, Johnny and Kaitlyn were married on October 10, 2015 at Windwood Equestrian in Pelham, Alabama. The wedding took place on a crisp fall Saturday. Kaitlyn wore a beautiful delicate lace dress by Lela Rose. The wedding was elegant and traditional with jewel tones as the color palette. Whimsical floral arrangements were perfectly done by Cloth of Gold. Johnny and Kaitlyn were blessed to have all their family and friends in attendance. The wedding consisted of good food, Motown music and horses. Kaitlyn is the daughter of Regenia and James Schweer of Birmingham. Johnny is the son of Anne and John Wilhelm of Vestavia. Kaitlyn and Johnny now live in Birmingham, Alabama. Kaitlyn is a nurse at St. Vincent’s Hospital, and Johnny is an attorney at Maynard Cooper & Gale.

haelan Perry and Andrew Williams are both natives of Birmingham, Alabama. They met through a mutual friend in middle school and quickly fell for one another. Andrew’s quiet and calm nature became the perfect balance of Shaelan’s eclectic and upbeat personality. At an early age, close family and friends laid claim that the two would one day wed. Who knew that ten years later they would be actually joined together in marriage? They were married on August 16, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Birmingham. Shaelan’s family pastor, Dr. Bobby England, performed the ceremony. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a white ivory couture Mori Lee ball gown with pearl and Swarovski crystal accents. She carried a delicate bouquet of pink roses, hydrangeas, and snap dragons that was designed by her mother, Sherry Perry. The attendants included the sister of the bride and maid of honor Chrycilis Perry of Nashville, Tennessee and maid of honor Rauslyn Adams of Birmingham. Bridesmaids were Chloe Williams of Chicago, Illinois; Ashley Covington of Fayetteville, South Carolina; and Haleigh Kemmerly of Montevallo. The hostesses included Jessica Hayes and Ashley Heard of Birmingham. The bridesmaids wore floor-length, halter chiffon gowns in petal pink. The best man was Larry Sims of Birmingham. Groomsmen were Gabriel Ballard of Birmingham, William Porter of Lexington, Kentucky; Dimitri of Nashville, Tennessee; and Chris Woodard of Pelham. The groomsmen wore grey tuxedos with pink rose boutonnieres. The ceremony began with the song of dedication, “Love,” sung by the bride’s cousin. The bride was announced and processed in by “A Thousand Years.” After exchanging vows and lighting their unity candle, the couple sealed their matrimony with the African American tradition of jumping the broom. A reception followed in the Hyatt’s grand ballroom. The bride’s cake was a four-tiered round cake accented with delicate ruffles and pearls with buttercream frosting and vanilla flavoring. The groom’s cake was a festive red velvet University of Alabama cake. The newlyweds were sent off with cheers and a shower of flower petals while they whisked off to their new beginning. The bride works in merchandising for Walmart Corporate, and the groom serves as a civil engineer in the United States Air Force. January 2016 | 41

STEYN

O

ne fateful night at a hospital downtown, Clint Bircheat and Aliza Steyn had a chance meeting that neither could predict. Aliza worked as a nursing assistant prior to graduate school, where she ran into Clint. After a few conversations, they soon realized the multitude of similarities they shared and a friendship blossomed. From their first unofficial date in a hospital room with pizza to their first official date that ended at the gym, each began to fall for the other. As time continued, Clint’s friendliness and honesty soon won her heart, just as Aliza’s gentleness and sincerity won his. On October 12, 2014 Clint surprised Aliza with a trip to Six Flags in Atlanta, followed by a ride on the downtown Ferris wheel. On the fourth spin around, as the Ferris wheel reached the very top, Clint went down on one knee and proposed. From that moment, picking a wedding date and venue seemed impossible with their schedules. As they threw around possible wedding venues, the only one that seemed right was their church chapel. It was while attending and serving together at Church of the Highlands that they had grown closer, so it only made sense that this would be where they would voice their vows of commitment to each other. As all things continued to work out, the chapel happened to be available the one weekend they needed. It was on August 15, 2015, that Aliza and Clint married in Church of the Highlands Chapel. Clint’s uncle, Rev. Kevin Colvard of Stone Oak Cumberland Presbyterian, performed the ceremony. The ceremony was filled with sprigs of lavender and baby’s breath provided by Renee Boston from Blossom. Musicians filled the air with songs such as “Touch the Sky,” “Divine Romance” and “Draw Near.” The reception was held at the Pine Tree Country Club, where all of their moments were captured by Debbie Thomas of Southern Soul Studio. Their wedding day ended just as they hoped – dancing with family and friends, just before being showered in lavender.

What Will Shelby County’s Business Climate Be in 2016? There will be no shortage of predictions and projections on the national and state level with regard to a variety of business issues — but what do Shelby County business people think our own local 2016 business climate will look like? The Greater Shelby Chamber wants to give business owners and top managers the chance to voice their opinion — and help us let the local community know

what Shelby County’s 2016 business outlook will be! We hope you’ll take a few moments to complete our 2016 Business Climate Survey — developed by the Chamber’s Small Business Work Group — and provide important feedback on business issues affecting your company in 2016. All individual responses will be kept confidential, but the overall results will be released and shared

in composite during the Chamber’s 2016 Business Outlook Conference cohosted by the University of Montevallo. In addition, the information will also be shared with economic developers, elected officials and the media so we’ll all have a better idea of what business people like you think 2016 will hold for Shelby County. You can complete the survey two simple ways:

1) Go-online at www. shelbychamber.org and complete the survey there. What Is Glaucoma

There is thought to be about 3 million people in this country with glaucoma, but only about half of them know they have it. Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve and can result in loss of vision or even blindness if left untreated, usually associated with increased pressure in the eyes. There are two more common forms of glaucoma, primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and angle closure glaucoma. There are several other forms, usually due to trauma or specific anatomical variations in our eyes. The most common form of glaucoma is POAG. In this form, excess fluid cannot flow out of the eye properly, causing the eye pressure to increase slowly. Over time, elevated eye pressure causes 2016 Health Focus Sponsor

damage to the nerve fibers in the optic nerve, resulting in vision loss. Symptoms associated with POAG are nonexistent at the onset of the disease. If left untreated, patients will start to lose specific areas of vision (mostly peripherally) initially, followed by straight ahead vision until the eye is blind. Angle closure glaucoma is a less common form of the disease. It occurs when the drainage system becomes blocked, resulting in a rapid buildup of fluid and significantly increased eye pressure. “Keeping It Real” Program Continues for 9th Grade Shelby County Students! The Chamber’s Education Work Group is in its 3rd year of the “Keeping It Real” Program. This program teaches 9th grade students about “real world” life choices by giving them a random-assigned “life scenario” which includes marital/ family status, education, job and salary. The students then pay bills, make decisions on increasing education, adding a second job, etc. based on the random-assigned

scenario. Each year this program has been an eyeopening experience for the 9th graders and the volunteers that assist with the program. The Chamber is seeking volunteers on January 14 for Shelby County High

WHY I LOVE SHELBY COUNTY

JENNIFER MAIER “This place is good for my soul.”

A

native of Mountain Brook, Jennifer Maier moved to Shelby County after marrying her husband, Craft Maier. The couple first lived in Calera before settling in Columbiana with their three dogs. Maier worked for many years in the banking industry before going into real estate with Weichert Realtors – Lowe Realty. In early fall 2015, Maier was named the new director of the Shelby County Museum and Archives. Maier, who has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Auburn University, is a member of the Vignette Club, Columbiana Beautification Board and the Leadership Shelby County Class of 2016. She attends Columbiana United Methodist Church and is secretary of the Shelby County Arts Council Board of Directors. Photograph CONTRIBUTED What do you love about Shelby County? Everything! I love everything about Shelby County. This place is good for my soul, which may sound kind of hokey, but it’s the truth. The people are warm and welcoming and there is always something to do! My husband and I found a wonderful place to worship at Columbiana United Methodist Church. Our church family really helped us establish a strong foundation to build our lives upon. It isn’t always easy moving to a small town, but I have to say that we have been blessed. I’m proud to live in Shelby County. I feel it is always moving in the right direction with the help of great leaders. What attracted to you to the museum director position? I tend to dive head first into subjects that I’m passionate about, and I’m passionate about Shelby County. The moment I heard that Bobby Joe Seales was retiring as director I knew that I might be a good fit as his successor. But I didn’t immediately rush to turn in my application. My ultimate decision came after much praying and discussion with 82 | ShelbyLiving.com

my husband, Craft. During that time, I met with Bobby Joe just to talk about the position and make certain it was a good fit. I’m glad it worked out and I was chosen to be the new director. Now I get to spend the day surrounded by what I love, and every day I learn something new about this county. Since I’m not from Shelby County originally, I see everything through the eyes of a newcomer, and I think that is actually a good thing. What are the plans for the museum? The focus at this time is keeping the doors of the museum open as many days of the week as possible. We currently are open Tuesday through Friday from 9 am to 3 pm. I hope to see us open one more additional day each week. I envision having Saturday hours for those that can’t come during the regular work week. I’m not sure everyone realizes that the museum also houses a wonderful archive where people can come and do genealogical research. The archive that has been created over the years is among the best in the state. Fred Olive, the new president for the Shelby County Historical Society, is working to find funding that will help keep the museum open for all to appreciate.

What’s your favorite artifact in the Shelby County Museum and Archives? My favorite item is a piece of an old inscribed tombstone that reads “Jemes Smith Dide Feb 7 1818.” What makes this tombstone so unusual is that the date of this man’s death is the same as the birthdate of Shelby County. It was found in 1976 in the area once known as Shelbyville. The man who discovered it couldn’t find any other sign of a graveyard, so it is now housed safely at the museum. When I look at the carved words, some of which are misspelled with letters backwards, I realize how hard life must have been for our early settlers. It gives me a greater appreciation of the sacrifices that have been made in the past 200 years. What historical event would you most like to witness and why? I think the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969 would have been so wonderful to witness. I would have been so enthralled with the whole process of landing a man on the moon. It was during that time that our country showed how innovative it was, and a few brave men stepped forward and made history. It represented a time of greatness for this country. l
