Willy Russell

By providing a showcase for new musicals and works -in- progress, the Festival will be an invaluable stimulus and encouragement to all those who, against the odds, grapple with this most demanding, but highly rewarding form of theatre. I hope that the Festival and all those who participate in it go from strength to strength’.

Willy wrote not only the book and the lyrics but also the score for his musical Blood Brothers, spending the whole of 1982 turning the small scale production of Blood Brothers into a full scale musical, revising the book, writing the lyrics and composing all the music himself. In addition of course, Willy Russell created the musical stage version of the original television film Our Day Out and has provided the scores for the feature films, Shirley Valentine, Dancin’ Thru The Dark and Mr Love as well as for the TV series Connie and the television play Terrace.

Jim Welsman T

he York New Musical Festival has been launched to encourage the writing and performing of musical theatre, one of our great and much loved art forms, by serving as a showcase for a diverse array of new musicals. With your support we will provide an affordable way for artists to mount professional productions that reach their peers, industry professionals and most importantly you, our musical theatre audiences. We hope the Festival will become an annual event which will aim in future years to discover, nurture, and promote promising artists at all stages of development, and seek to inspire you, our audiences, through vibrant, accessible and powerful new work. The Festival will also give artists the crucial chance to hone their craft and their musicals, by realising their shows in three dimensions before responsive audiences. The Festival will endeavour to attract the participation of well-known actors, directors and other established members of the theatre industry and create an environment rich with mentorship opportunities for newer artists, and make the festival a leading venue for the discovery of talented new performers, directors, choreographers, designers, and producers — as well as writers. We wish to thank the composers, directors, producers, performers and everyone else involved in the shows which make up this year’s festival. In particular, we would like to thank the trustees and voluntary staff of the Joseph Rowntree Theatre for all their help and cooperation and for providing a fitting venue in our first year. To you, our audience, we ask for your much needed support for all the shows at our first festival , which will give us the encouragement to grow and expand the festival in the years to come. Thank you in anticipation of your support.
