An initiative of MITC, StudyMaine is a consortium of Maine high schools, colleges, and universities designed to connect educational institutions with international students who want to attend high school or college in the United States.

Young Global Professionals is a network of early career employees who have international perspective, experience, or interests. The group holds networking events several times a year, providing both a source of connections for young workers interested in career development as well as an excellent resource for companies seeking potential employees with global skills.

Internships in International Trade

MITC’s Future Global Leaders internship program teaches global market and workplace skills to some of the best and brightest Maine college students. To date, MITC has trained more than 200 Research Assistants.

the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce? As the Board Chair for the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce, I am delighted to answer the 5 questions that I am asked. What is the purpose of the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce? The BRCC serves a region of 21 communities and close to 800 member organizations. Our goal is to further the interests of our members through advocacy, economic development and networking opportunities. As a member of the Chamber, you will not only grow your business, you will be promoting and growing the community at large.

It is worth the money?

Find out what your membership dues would be and make a business decision based on the ROI (return on investment). Your BRCC membership provides many benefits that can be tailored to the specific needs of your business. Our Chamber staff will work with you to understand what your goals are for your business and determine how your membership can help you achieve those goals.

Will chamber membership work for my business? From networking opportunities that connect you to the business community to seminars that provide you with the knowledge to be successful, there are numerous ways your business can benefit from membership in the chamber. In addition, research has shown that consumers are more likely to do business with a company that is a member of their local chamber of commerce.

How will my concerns with government actions be expressed? The BRCC has a strong focus on advocacy as evidenced through our ”Issues of Impact” publication, the work of our Governmental Affairs committee and our “Hot Stove” events that bring together our member businesses to discuss their issues of interest with local, state and national leaders. Your ability to influence public policy becomes stronger as your voice joins others in the chamber to make a difference in local, state and national policy.

How can I make my Chamber membership work for me? Participate! Be active. Join a committee. Use the website. Sponsor an event. Attend events. Be visible. Make use of chamber resources. Ask for help. The BRCC is here to help you grow your business, your brand, your network and your influence.

I really like the Success Seminars and the Hot Stove Sessions. I attend some of the Success Seminars, especially the ever-changing world of social media marketing. Cintia Miranda and Ally Scott presented recently on FaceBook marketing and it was really informative and I was able to apply the learnings to my business. My business partner and I present at the Success Seminars and it's a great way of sharing the things we are passionate about and building a network of potential clients. With the Hot Stove Sessions I get to know what's going on in Washington and Augusta and get to see our state representatives and senators face to face. They are there to both share and listen and this is a forum where I feel heard, and that could lead to positive changes.

I've been involved with the Bangor Region Chamber in many of my roles in the Greater Bangor Community over the past 7 years. What a valuable team we have here in the region. A big shout out to the ENTIRE Chamber Staff, which are some of the most peasant and helpful people I have encountered. I encourage any business, large or small, to get involved with the BRCC - you will gain so much - education, relationships, partnerships, and beyond. Chamber member for life here! This (nice) place we call HOME Ask anyone how they came to live in the Bangor region and you will hear a different story. Some people grew up here and never left. Others left and returned. Others came here for vacation or spent summers at camp and later returned to stay for good. My journey began when I was six years old and my family rented a camp in Maine. I was not born or raised here, but Maine stole my heart that summer and so began a journey that would lead me to make Maine my permanent home. I have never looked back. At the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce we meet people every day who walk into our office as visitors to the area who are considering relocating here. Time and time again they mention how “nice” the people are. They are right. The people who make up our community will let you cross the street. They will offer directions and answer your questions. They will smile at you and make you feel welcome. Recently, a visitor to the chamber office was not sure how to get to the airport. Rather than sending her off with directions, a member of our staff gladly volunteered to drive her there. The visitor later wrote us a note, thanking us for being so nice and helpful. But it goes far beyond that.

Innovators and entrepreneurs will tell you that people will go out of their way to connect you to the people and resources you need to succeed. The Bangor region is a special place with something for everyone. From our educational institutions, to healthcare facilities, transportation options, lodging, retail, restaurants, entertainment, arts, recreation and friendly neighborhoods. I wanted to make a greater impact in my community, and I felt that doing it directly (investing capital) was the best way to do that.

Why do you think the Bangor region is a great place to invest personal and financial resources? Although small, everything about Bangor is big, from peoples hearts to the Great Northern wilderness that rests just outside the city, you can find everything you need right here.

What advice would you offer other entrepreneurs when it comes to being successful in this region? Stick to your guns and determination. Make a plan and run with it. That said, do stay flexible with your plans because sometimes you have to make adjustments.

What is one of the misconceptions about the Bangor region that you would like to correct or change? Parking. This one drives me nuts because I hear it a ton, "There's no parking downtown". There is plenty of parking and just like every city I visit you have to walk to where you want to go downtown. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only a bonus if you find a spot right in front of where you want to go downtown.

As a long time resident of Bangor what words come to mind to describe the community?

You have been a participant, volunteer and enthusiastic cheerleader for the Bangor Region Leadership Institute (BRLI). Why is this program so important to you and to the community?

Warm, welcoming, with great cultural, educational, and outdoor living opportunities. This region is made for people who want to make a difference by weaving in their contribution to the community fabric. This is why Bangor dazzles!

If there was one thing the community could do to continue to improve the quality of life here, what would it be? Actively recruit new residents as well as new companies to locate here. The term “from away” must engender a warm, welcoming smile and open doors, but this will only happen if we celebrate all cultures and focus together on economic growth. This will take a strategy and real determination, but we can do it.

As the Co-Founder of Deighan Wealth Advisors and someone who has dedicated your time and resources to many philanthropic efforts over the years, what is the greatest lesson you have learned that you would want to share with others? First, get involved. Your community is your wider family so give generously with a warm heart of both time and treasure. You can make a difference here, so do it. It is best to focus on areas that ignite your passion and narrow your focus so you won’t be a mile wide and an inch deep. If you narrow your focus, you have a better chance to really “move the needle” on something.

If you were taking out of town friends out for a day of exploring the Bangor region, what would you do and where would you go? First a downtown morning stroll….kicked off with a cup of coffee at the Bangor Public Library’s Sage Cafe. Then we stroll along Harlow Street exploring the many gift shops and maybe buying a hand knit Viking Hat and a strand of semi-precious beads. Then we visit the latest exhibition at the University of Maine Museum of Art (UMMA offers free admission underwritten by community donations!). Then off to more shops to buy a fossil or two or some wild woolen socks! We head up the hill and through the Antique Mall then to the Bangor Historical Society’s Hill House where Chamberlain’s sword lives. Then we have lunch at one of the downtown eateries before we race happily through the Maine Discovery Museum with our granddaughter. Soon, we are off to dinner downtown followed by a performance at the Penobscot Theatre or with the Bangor Symphony at the Bangor Arts Exchange. We end the evening with a downtown pub crawl visiting the many local breweries and pubs followed by a friendly cab ride home.

Bangor Region Leadership Institute is a credit to all that is truly incredible about this region – the people. When I naïvely walked into class that first day, I thought I knew what I was walking into, an opportunity to learn more about this community, and a chance to network with a few people. I had no idea that I was embarking on a journey that would truly change me, both personally and professionally. I met friends who I feel like I’ve known forever and through the leadership exercises, I found the tools and resources that strengthened my confidence to grow as a leader and co-worker. I’m forever thankful for this opportunity. While I may joke with friends that I’ll always be a New Yorker, I’m beyond blessed to call Maine home, and I look forward to calling it home for many years to come.

What did going through the BRLI program teach you about this region that you didn’t know about before? Having worked as a journalist when I first moved to Maine, I thought I had a pretty good understanding of the greater Bangor region. That could not have been farther from the truth. Bangor Region Leadership Institute opened my eyes to hidden gems that I otherwise wouldn’t have known we’re here such as the United Technologies Center (UTC). It also opened my eyes to how much the people who live here truly believe in and care about this region. It’s their passion and dedication that are reviving downtown. It’s the neighbors who lend a helping hand to help shovel out your car or driveway; It’s the people who start a meal train to help a family through a hard time, and it’s the people who champion the importance of local culture and come out as a community to support the American Folk Festival and other non-profit fundraising events. BRLI opened my eyes and introduced me to another side of this community, it’s people.

What do you enjoy most about living, working and playing here? Stealing a line from “Cheers”, Bangor is a place where everybody knows your name. I love that you can be downtown in a few minutes and walk to restaurants and bars on a summer evening and stop to chat with friends who are doing the same thing. I love that you can hop in the car on a Saturday morning and be on the coast or Moosehead Lake within a couple of hours, and feel like you’ve had a relaxing weekend getaway.

Describe your perfect weekend road trip in and around the Bangor region? I love to head down to the Belfast / Lincolnville area on weekends where the smell of the salt air helps me relax after a long week, and sitting on the back deck at Cellardoor Winery helps me rewind. It’s just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Bangor, and yet it feels like I really got away.

You moved to the Bangor region in 1974 and were an active Architect/Project Manager with WBRC Architects/Engineers from 1980 thru retirement in 2014. What changes have you seen in the community that you are the most excited about?

You are the recipient of an award from FUSION:Bangor, a network of young residents committed to the growth of the greater Bangor region as the premiere place to live, work, and play. Would you agree with that statement and why?

As the Chamber’s Volunteer of the Year award winner, why is volunteering for the Chamber and other organizations important to you?

Urban Renewal in the 1960’s created a huge blight, but it also brought design and construction opportunities all around the region. The waterfront evolution along the Penobscot, along with the revival of downtown and Main Street to the Cross Insurance Center continues to be incredible!

You have dedicated yourself to community service by serving on a variety of non-profit boards. Why is community service important to you? It comes from my upbringing. My parents were post-war newlyweds who worked hard to earn entry into the middle class. They were wonderful examples of selfreliance and self-determination, blended with community commitment through participation. My childhood centered in a community with a strong blend of religious and ethnic backgrounds where everyone came together to move things forward during the recovery from WWII.

What are you most proud of when reflecting on your career and service to the community? This community has provided me with opportunity after opportunity. I want to honor that and help encourage/energize the generations coming up after me. So, what am I most proud of? It’s the emerging generations’ youthful optimism, skill and dedication to our community. They are doing incredible things, and I am incredibly optimistic.

What advice would you give to a young person or new resident starting their career, community service or growing their family here? I often tell others that the Bangor region is the center of the universe. It can be that for you, your friends, your families if you choose to make it that. Distances are shrinking, communication is instantaneous and global, the entire world is well within reach. Opportunities are expanding here, our quality of life is incredible, nature is accessible daily, and the spirit of our community is buoyant. Take a hold of it, nurture it, make it your own, and pass it on to your kids.

FUSION:Bangor provides a great introduction to greater Bangor through their many programs and networking events. Anyone who is new to the area, considering relocating here, or looking to reinvent themselves should think about passing through the FUSION gates and exploring the possibilities beyond.

You have been an active participant in the Bangor region as both a City Councilor and as the owner of a downtown business, The Briar Patch. Describe what Downtown Bangor has to offer? Downtown Bangor is a symbol of rebirth for me. Watching the downtown area come back to life and thrive thanks to many people who have been willing to invest themselves and take risks has transformed, and continues to transform Bangor and what it means to both residents and visitors alike. Though some businesses will always wax and wane, what Downtown Bangor has to offer is a unique shop, dine, and live local experience that’s hard to find and just keeps getting better.

Knowing you are helping someone is the best part about volunteering. My children are older now and it has been a great way to fill the void as they have become independent. I have been very fortunate to have a professional career and support from my family and I have met some wonderful people that have become great mentors and friends. I also have a lot of fun volunteering!.

Why do you think it’s a good idea for employers to encourage their employees to give back to the community through volunteering? Employers should encourage their employees to volunteer on a regular basis. It helps the community and it shows that the company cares about what is going on in the community. It is a great way for their employees to network and gain new business in the process.

When you travel outside of Maine for business or pleasure, how do you describe this place you call home to the people you meet?

What advice would you offer someone who is interested in getting involved in the community through volunteering.

Bangor is at a crossroads, a hub of life and ideas that can take you anywhere. It’s both a home and an escape that continues to evolve and understand its identity thanks to the community that supports it. It’s come a long way since its previous lives and has more work ahead of it, but the people of this city make every growing pain worth it.

Find what you are passionate about and contact that agency about helping them. I have found that speaking with an agency about volunteering helps them understand what my time and talents are so they can match me with what they are looking for. Also, be careful not to over commit. Be honest with yourself and others as to your capacity. This way everyone wins and expectations are met.

What would you like to see Downtown Bangor become in the future? I’d like to see Downtown Bangor continue to thrive and develop as the result of smart growth and good planning. Pieces of the city center still need a guiding hand, using both foresight and the knowledge of what has worked in similar cities. Downtown has outgrown the small town constraints that kept it on life support for many years. Pedestrian friendliness, business development, awareness and promotion, building use, traffic flow, and public safety are all things we need to continually work on. As we do this, we need to embrace the past and the future. It’s in that convergence that we’ll discover that downtown Bangor is the lost city of Norumbega.

Describe your favorite road trip? My favorite road trip would be more of a walking tour. I would pick the perfect sunny day and spend the morning exploring the Brewer side of the river and enjoy the beautiful paths and gardens with a stop to play chess on one of the chess boards. Then I would walk across the one of the bridges and explore all of downtown Bangor. I would spend lots of time going in and out of the small shops and then eat in one of the many restaurants downtown that offer outside seating.

The Future of Retail... ...and what it means for the Bangor Region

The Retail Association of Maine was founded in 1937 as the Maine Merchants Association and represents retailers of all shapes and sizes across Maine. We work hard to support the diverse and vibrant retailers throughout Maine from small independent retailers to the national retailers. Maine employs more than 80,000 Mainers in retail! Curtis Picard, CAE President and CEO of the Retail Association of Maine. Curtis is President and CEO of the Retail Association of Maine. Prior to his current position, Curtis was VP of Business Development and International Trade for the VT Chamber of Commerce. He was responsible for the chamber’s international trade program with offices in Shanghai, China and Taipei, Taiwan. Curtis serves on the board of directors of the Maine Tourism Association, Topsham Development, Inc. (TDI), the Maine Society of Association Executives and the Maine Small Business and Entrepreneurship Commission. He is a past board member of the National Retail Federation and the Council of State Retail Associations.

1. The world of retail has changed dramatically in recent years. How have those changes impacted communities in Maine? Did you hear the story about a retailer that took over America by selling to customers by mail order? Over time, they got so big that they realized they needed to start opening physical retail locations to better serve their customers. Did you think I was talking about Amazon? I was really talking about Sears. Funny how one segment of retail has come full circle, and despite all of the changes in retail there are a couple of truisms that have stood the test of time. The first truism is that retail has always been and always will be super competitive. Yes, Sears used to be king of the hill. Other retailers have come and gone and for a while, everyone was worried about Walmart eating their lunch. Now, we talk about Amazon and the variety of “dollar” stores cropping up everywhere. The other truism is that retailers always strive to better serve their customers. They want to sell them the products they want and need and do it in a way that provides satisfaction and loyalty. But, customers are fickle. The 4 P’s of marketing stay true as well: product, price, placement and promotion still matter. What does all of this matter to Maine and the Bangor region specifically? It means that our region experiences the same market forces that is causing the evolution of retail. Some news stories have been quick to declare retail dead or the coming “retail apocalypse”. Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, retail is evolving, but the changes are more visible these days because technology is becoming more seamless. We used to talk about the difference between your physical store and your online store. Customers don’t care about those differences. They see one entity and they expect you to meet their needs whether it is in the store or ordering from the comfort of their home. Smart retailers have learned that they need to provide that omnichannel experience to customers and that applies whether they are big or small.

2. How have Maine retailers had to adapt to survive? There are a number of things that retailers are doing and will continue to do to survive. The first is making sure their customers are having a “memorable experience”. The terms being used are experiential marketing and omnichannel. Experiential marketing is creating an environment that is unique, authentic and memorable for the customer and it can take many forms. Can you provide something unexpected in your store? Perhaps provide a Maine food tasting in store, or donate the proceeds from one shopping day to a cause important to your customers, or some other type of experience that will resonate with your base? So, what is omnichannel? Omnichannel provides the customer with an integrated customer experience. The customer can shop with a retailer from anywhere. Whether it be online, by phone, or in a brick and mortar store, the experience would be seamless. It’s no longer limited to just large, multi-state retailers. I’ll use Mexicali Blues as an example. They have a retail location in downtown Bangor and have embraced the omnichannel approach to customer service. They carry a unique product line, but they had a hard time replicating that in-store experience with the online experience. They realized that their stores carried many more items than what they offered online and they were treating the in-store and online experiences differently. Over time, they made the necessary investments to make the shopping experience seamless and as a result they have seen their online sales go through the roof. The most important thing to remember is that customers expect to have an outstanding experience with a retailer, regardless of their size and how and where they shop.

3. How can we, as a region and as consumers support our local retailers? First, we have to remember that shopping small or locally is not just reserved for the Saturday after Black Friday. Small local retailers need our business the rest of the year as well. Regardless of whether a Maine retailer is an independent location, part of a small chain or if it is one of the multi-state retailers, the people working in them are Mainers, too. Maine’s retail industry employs more than 80,000 people. That’s a huge part of our economy. There is a perception out there that small retailers are always higher priced but that’s the exception, not the rule.

4. Any insights into the future trends in retail? It’s been really interesting to see the technology that continues to transform retail and becoming more accessible to smaller retailers. Back in the day, perhaps a retailer kept a small index card with your birthday and remembered to send you a gift every year. Now, the technology makes it easier to capture and track that data to continue to provide a more personalized shopping experience. We are seeing the emergence of augmented reality technology so you can virtually try on that new outfit and see what that chair would look like in your living room. In addition, promotion of a brand’s social and community involvement; and the ability to shop online but pick up in-store continues to increase throughout the industry.

5. Are their specific types of retailers that are likely to fare best in today’s market and continue to thrive in the future? That’s a great question and one that is always easier to answer looking in the rearview mirror. The more recent trends have been that department stores have been more challenged to keep their customer base as people are looking for more authentic shopping experiences. Furniture stores have been doing well lately for two reasons: strong economy and those millennials that were living with their parents during the great recession are finally moving out on their own and they need furniture. It’s very hard to predict what retail categories are going to thrive in the future. Retail has always been and always will be super competitive. But the subtext of that is that retail is also very diverse. When you walk around downtown Bangor, think about all of the different retailers that are represented within one downtown block. Some of them have been there a long time and some are just starting out, but even the really big names in retail usually started with just one store started by one family, just ask LL Bean.

Travel & Weather GETTING HERE AND STAYING COMFORTABLE THE BANGOR REGION’S CLIMATE Summer temperatures are generally quite comfortable, with afternoon temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s. Summer evenings are generally cool, with many readings in the low 60s. Early and late average summertime highs are in the mid 70s. In midsummer, highs hover around the 80 degree mark. The fall foliage season brings a lot of leaf-peepers to Maine. The peak season falls between the end of September and mid-October. Typical winter weather is cold across the Bangor region with average high temps in the mid to upper 20s during January, but climbing to the low to mid 30s by late February. In summary, the Bangor region is nearly free of extreme or very uncomfortable summer heat, and nights are generally comfortably cool, even on the hottest days. Hotels and Accomodations Bangor has a number of hotels and accommodations to provide you with a comfortable stay in the Queen City. Most notable is Hollywood Casino Hotel and Raceway, which oozes old Hollywood glamour. Among portraits of Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe, try your hand at nearly 1,000 slot machines, as well as table games such as blackjack, poker, and roulette. The casino boasts a full bar and the “Epic Buffet,” with delectable fare spanning the globe.

Theater If quality entertainment is what you seek, you won’t have to look far. Bangor is home to the Penobscot Theatre Company, which produces plays and musicals that are lauded across the state. Going to the theatre is a treat in and of itself, for it is housed in the historic Bangor Opera House, which is known for its brilliant architecture. Elsewhere in Bangor, Husson University’s Gracie Theater and the University of Maine’s Collins Center for the Arts offer a multitude of theatrical and dance performances.

Music In addition to the theater, there is an array of music in Bangor, including one of the country’s oldest community symphonies: the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. The American Folk Festival, a free, public cultural festival, is a cultural mecca for music, featuring

What is BRLI? Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce. BRLI is designed to give potential and emerging leaders the skills, knowledge, and ongoing support they need to succeed in the greater Bangor community. FOR PARTICIPANTS: The BRLI program spans October through May each year over nine separate day-long sessions. Each session takes place at a different area location that ties into a specific theme or topic the region is facing today. As a member from BRLI, you will grow professionally and personally from the variety of leadership, team building, communication and self-awareness exercises that are part of the curriculum. Coordinated by expert facilitators, these activities will grow and shape you as a leader, enabling you to take on any challenge that comes your way and lead effectively. FOR EMPLOYERS BRLI begins in the fall of each year, and continues through the spring, over nine separate day-long sessions. Each session takes place at a different area location which ties into that sessionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s specific theme. The curriculum includes a dynamic array of presenters that represent a variety of backgrounds and occupations. Presenters are chosen based on their and expertise and leadership capacity in a certain field, their commitment to the community, and their excellent communication skills.
