Ask “Wikipedia” and this is what you will learn… “A chamber of commerce (or board of trade) is a form of business network, for example, a local organization of businesses whose goal is to further the interests of businesses. Business owners in towns and cities form these local societies to advocate on behalf of the business community. Local businesses are members, and they elect a board of directors or executive council to set policy for the chamber. The board or council then hires a President, CEO or Executive Director, plus staffing appropriate to size, to run the organization. The first chamber of commerce was founded in 1599 in Marseille, France. Another official chamber of commerce would follow 65 years later, probably in Bruges, then part of the Spanish Netherlands. The world's oldest English-speaking chamber of commerce is the Jersey Chamber founded in February 1768, the same year the New York City Chamber was founded. Chambers of commerce have a long and rich history of supporting the business community. The Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce has been doing so for more than a century. By Deb Neuman, In our archives, we have newspaper President clippings, black and white photos and BANGOR REGION minutes from Board meetings that date CHAMBER OF back many decades. Some things have COMMERCE changed a lot over the years. Take for example, the photo of a Board of Directors meeting from the 1950’s when the Board members were all men and smoking was an accepted practice as evidenced by the ashtrays on the table or the financial documents that were all hand written on ledger paper. A lot has changed over the years, yet so much has stayed the same. We continue to focus our efforts on serving the business community and to help our region prosper. We are led by a committed and talented Board of Directors, volunteer committees and staff who work tirelessly to serve our more than 800 members. As we honor and celebrate our past, we look towards our future. We are doing so in a new, yet “old” location. The Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce has moved into what was once the Merrill Bank building on
Hammond Street in the heart of downtown Bangor. We are excited to be in a building that holds such rich history and like the chamber, has been part of the community for more than a century. As we “move” forward in our downtown Bangor location we will continue to support our members by: • Providing networking opportunities through events such as our “Business After Hours” • Providing learning opportunities through our “Early Bird Breakfasts” and “Success Seminars” • Providing marketing opportunities through a variety of events, publications and media • Advocating on behalf of our members on issues that impact them and our region • Offering opportunities to engage with our political leaders through our “Hot Stove” events • Celebrating the successes of our members and our region at our Annual Awards dinner • Fostering and developing leaders through our “Bangor Region Leadership Institute” program • Working to attract and retain young professionals through our “Fusion” program • Connecting business with education through our “Building Bridges” program • Providing one-on-one advice, support, assistance and referrals to help our members achieve success! The Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce is committed to our members and to doing whatever we can to ensure there are opportunities in our region for our businesses, residents, students and visitors to achieve their goals. This has been true in the past for the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce. It holds true in the present and will continue to move us into the future.

You both graduated from the University of Maine and then opened a restaurant in Orono. You have continued to expand and invest in this region. Why is this region a good place to do business? We love doing business in this region for three primary reasons: 1. Great opportunity for growth in Orono and Bangor. There is a lot going on in these communities, but there is still a chance to make a big difference by being involved. 2. Great Economic Development teams and and support from the community. 3. We love living here.
What advice would you offer other entrepreneurs and innovators when it comes to doing business in the Bangor region? Get to know the area well. Figure out what it needs, and what people will support. Reach out to your neighbors.
What do you enjoy most about living here? The people are amazing. Work by the Orono and Bangor Land Trusts have created wonderful local trails and opportunities for getting out into the woods. We love the strong Downtown of Orono and Bangor. We love being able to cross country ski and mountain bike from our back door.

As the Manager for the Town of Holden, what are you most excited about when it comes to the future of the Bangor region? The chance to see growth in our area excites me the most. I enjoy talking to residents and business owners about our community’s history and how today compares to how it looked 40-50 years ago. I am excited to see what will come in the next 40-50 years and I am truly honored to be in a position to help shape that future.
You came to Maine from Massachusetts to attend the UMaine? What is it about this region that keeps you here? I am a proud graduate from the former Public Administration program at the UMaine and I am from “away”. I have a small sign in my garage I picked up at an antique shop that says “I wasn’t born here, but I got here as fast as I could”. What keeps me here most is the people, I have never lived in an area where people genuinely care about one another and want to make a difference. Without the people I have been fortunate enough to meet along the journey there is no way I would be where I am today.
What advice would you offer other young professionals when it comes to finding success in this region? Some people chase money, chase fame, or hope to leave their mark on life. In our region it’s possible to do all of those, while living in a vibrant and safe area to raise a family.

Breakfast in Orono, then a motorcycle trip to Clifton for a short hike. Enjoy a beautiful ride home, and dinner in Bangor.
The perfect weekend road trip would start and end with a 1973 Volkswagen Thing convertible and a nice sunny weekend.

When it comes to the success of Waterfront Concerts in Bangor, what are you the most proud of? Job creation. As a group of five younger males (Robbie Snow, Randy Dufour, Pat Shaw, Mike Fischer and I) that all had aspirations to leave or had left the Bangor market for greener pastures, our hope was this would allow us to have full time employment in a field we love, in the region where we live, so we could stay close to our families.
What positive impact have the Waterfront Concerts had to the Bangor region? Besides the financial and economic impact to the region, we are very proud of what we call the “mojo” effect. Bangorians and people of the region now have the ability to laude the quality of entertainment in their backyard at the Darlings Waterfront Pavilion and Cross Center. Bangor is now known as the host to world class entertainment.
When you are recruiting and courting acts to Bangor, how do you describe the venue, the community and the experience? The Pavilion is unique since it is sandwiched in the middle of what is now called the entertainment corridor. Most venues in larger markets are in more remote “industrial park” like areas. It is unique for a venue of this size to be in walking distance to so much “other” including restaurants, bars, nightclubs, pubs, the Cross Insurance Center, Hollywood Casino, Penobscot Theatre, hotels, art museums, and more.
Who is on your list of performers whom you would love to see play in Bangor? Ahh, that list is long. Aerosmith, Guns and Roses, Billy Joel, Elton, Metallica, Eagles are a few of my favorites that have yet to play Bangor, That said, if I had my own personal show it would be Deadmau5 and Eric Prydz back to back. I have always loved electronic dance music and they are both masters of their crafts.
What are your hopes for the future of the Waterfront Concerts and the venue in Bangor? I hope we can continue to make the fan experience much better. We need a larger concourse, including bathrooms, improved concessions, better ADA and fan accessibility. The dream goal would be to cover part of the venue. We are currently working with the city to implement some of the aforementioned, and in time we will get there. We really appreciate the fans bearing with us while we work through the unique issues and opportunities that the Bangor Waterfront presents for development.

As a business owner and recognized community leader, what is it about the Bangor region that you value the most?
What has volunteering for the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce meant for you?
One of the things I enjoy most about living and working in Bangor is the sincere commitment to the region the business community exhibits daily. There is an overwhelming sense of pride, ownership, and stewardship in the people who live and work in our region. Those traits mean that people are willing to serve on non-profit boards, participate in discussions about future growth, and work together to make smart decisions for our future.
I've always felt well informed, however the Chamber has strengthened my knowledge of the region and the impact these businesses have on our communities. The Chamber has also allowed me to be an educator and give back to the community. I am able to share my experiences with other business owners, hopefully providing a little bit of wisdom, if not a solution, or at the very least camaraderie.
For someone new to the area, what would you tell them if they asked how they could become more involved in the community?

One way is to use the United Way of Eastern Maine. They run a volunteer matching website call VolunteerME (http://volunteer. unitedwayem.org/) that allows residents to find volunteer opportunities at non-profits that need help. Another is to call a nonprofit you may be interested in learning more about. Organizations in our region are delighted to help folks learn more about their mission and to help further their cause. It really is as simple as a phone call.
It's really kind of perfect; it’s a small town with all the amenities of a big city. We have an international airport, incredible hospitals, great music, arts and entertainment venues - from the Collins Center, Darling's Waterfront Concerts, and Penobscot Theater to racing, like Speedway 95 or harness racing in addition to our first-class restaurants and hotels. Location is also a huge plus. If you want to go white water rafting or spend the day in Acadia National Park, it’s all close by.
As a business owner with a location in downtown Bangor, what changes have you seen to downtown and the community in the last 5 years?
As a business owner and operator, why is this a good place to be in business?
Bangor's downtown is truly thriving. There's a buzz and an excitement downtown that wasn't present just 5 years ago. And don't even get me started about the change in the past 20 years! I love the ability to eat outside during the warmer months, the additional cultural and entertainment events that have been added, and, most importantly, the interest the business community at large has taken in how the downtown is thriving. It feels like we all have a desire to see the trend continue.
Location, location, location! Our central location draws customers from so many areas and there are lots of resources available to help grow your business, including community banks, institutions of higher education, and economic development organizations and mentors willing to help. Not to mention our community itself. Our business owners are truly interested in helping each other grow and that's a rarity. We support each other; we don't just compete with each other.
Describe your perfect weekend road trip in and around the Bangor region? I'll start with the assumption that it's lovely and it's summer and it's just Ric and I in our 1977 Triumph Spitfire. We would start off Friday evening with dinner downtown so that we could walk from the office. Saturday morning we'd hop in the convertible and head to breakfast at a local diner, then out route 1 toward Ellsworth to enjoy the fabulous views through the hills, lakes, and valleys. Lunch would be at the Lucerne Inn overlooking Phillips Lake. The evening's entertainment would be a concert on the waterfront. Sunday would bring a picnic lunch on the water at one of the public lake beaches nearby and an afternoon ice cream at Giffords.
Describe your perfect weekend road trip in and around the Bangor region? I love going to the Orono Farmers Market on Saturday morning…for fresh vegetables and fruits; after that I stop at Ragamuffin's in Veazie and then on to either Tiller and Rye or the Natural Living Center. I may go for a walk along the river or take a bike ride. Then head home to make something new with all that fresh local produce. For a summer weekend road trip, we’ll head to my sister’s camp at Lucerne Lake or my parents’ place in Bar Harbor. I love the smell of the salt air.

Why Bangor? In your role, as President of Maine & Company, you are very familiar with the state of Maine.
What do you think is unique about the Bangor Region compared to other regions in the state?
Peter DelGreco President & CEO Maine & Company Peter serves as President and CEO of Maine & Company, a privately funded business attraction and economic development organization. Charged with helping companies establish successful and profitable operations in Maine, Maine & Company’s Board of Directors consists of top executives from Maine’s business community. During Peter’s tenure, Maine & Company has attracted numerous companies to Maine that now employ thousands of people across the state. Through Peter’s leadership, Maine & Company has attracted companies from various sectors, growth stages, and sizes to locations throughout the state of Maine. Portfolio companies include: athenahealth, Sun Life Financial, Carbonite, Grand Rounds, and Wayfair. Peter is a graduate of Colby College and he earned his MBA from the University of Southern Maine. Peter and his wife and son reside in North Yarmouth, Maine.
Maine is full of unique and wonderful regions and we see successful business throughout the entire state. The Bangor region boasts a couple of qualities that don’t exist anywhere else in Maine in one location. Maine has three recognized Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs): Portland, Lewiston-Auburn, and Bangor. In order to be considered an MSA, a region needs to have a workforce of significant size. Bangor has that. In Orono, the University of Maine flagship campus attracts an additional 12,500 students to the population and contributes significantly to the region and state economy by way of its R&D efforts. The newly remodeled Bangor International Airport connects people to the rest of the country. Having the combination of a major university next to an easily accessible airport in an MSA creates an attractive and powerful region.
What are you "hearing on the street" about the Bangor region? People are excited about Bangor. It has population density, an ability to move people throughout the state and country, and it has a growing energy that is attracting more and more people to the area. You can see and feel the energy when you walk downtown, when you go through the remodeled airport, or even walking through Wayfair’s new operation. There is energy in the area. The young professional group in the region – Fusion Bangor - also grabs a lot of attention. People ask me about the dodgeball and kickball games all the time. What is your response when asked by companies about why they should consider bringing or expanding their business to this region? We actually ask the question a little differently. We ask the company what they need in a region in order to establish a successful operation. Because of the Bangor region’s size and
diverse economy, many companies can find what they need in the Bangor region. Whether it is traditional manufacturing, professional services, natural resource based operations, or information technology, there are examples of successful companies in the region. We show companies how they can replicate that success. Regions grow when business investment is strong. Companies like Wayfair, GE, Bangor Savings Bank, Cianbro, Cross Insurance, Hollywood Casino, and others have all made significant investment in the region over the years. This has led to additional growth and investment in the downtown locations throughout the region. Public private investments at places like the Cross Insurance Center, Bangor International Airport, Waterfront Concerts, and the University of Maine have helped stimulate growth and overall economic activity. When you see all of this activity, potential new companies to the area are impressed and want to learn more.

From an opportunity perspective, we have found that people who have been to Maine frequently look for reasons to come back. Whether they were born here, went to college here, came here as a tourist, or traveled here for business, people are excited to come back. If they can somehow work their professional goals into the fabric of Maine, they will frequently jump at that opportunity. The more we can connect business leaders who have some experience with Maine with new professional opportunities, the more likely we are to see some additional business investment. Put more succinctly, the attributes that make people happy here personally can also be profitable for business. We have to keep telling that story. The Bangor region is fortunate because there are so many people that have experienced what the region has to offer. As for challenges, I think it is a fair criticism to say that government across the global, national, and local levels are struggling to meet the needs of its citizens. There is a lot of turmoil throughout the country and globe. Bad policies can stymie business growth. We need to make sure that elected leaders across all levels of government implement progrowth policies that encourage businesses to invest.
What are some of the "trends" you are seeing in economic and business development nationally and in Maine? Nationally, the trend is to include major incentives designed to stimulate. That is not a strategy that Maine chooses to follow. We have conservative programs that are responsible, trackable, and effective. However, other states will almost always offer larger incentive packages than Maine. Understanding that in reality, we have to create our own trends. People familiar with the area are more likely to invest in the region. Our ability to locate those decision makers and show them how they can be successful here has led to a number of new investments statewide and in the region. We frequently hear about workforce challenges in Maine. While we do have challenges, it is much more acute in other parts of the country. The more we continue to develop tools to attract new residents or enable companies to up-skill job applicants and incumbent workers, the more likely it is that our business community will thrive. The Opportunity Maine Tax Credit – essentially dramatically reducing student debt for certain graduates – has the
potential to be an important tool for employers and potential employees.
Based on those trends, how can the Bangor region prepare to be successful in the future? Support your existing businesses. Private company investment into the region will be the best stimulus you can imagine. At Maine & Company, we use the testimonials of successful businesses to serve as an example to potential new businesses. This has been especially strong in the Bangor region as business and civic leaders frequently help us share the story. Be professional. Be ready.

Travel & Weather GETTING HERE AND STAYING COMFORTABLE THE BANGOR REGION’S CLIMATE Summer temperatures are generally quite comfortable, with afternoon temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s. Summer evenings are generally cool, with many readings in the low 60s. Early and late average summertime highs are in the mid 70s. In midsummer, highs hover around the 80 degree mark. The fall foliage season brings a lot of leaf-peepers to Maine. The peak season falls between the end of September and mid-October. Typical winter weather is cold across the Bangor region with average high temps in the mid to upper 20s during January, but climbing to the low to mid 30s by late February. Winter temperatures frequently drop into the single digits with some nighttime

The Community Connector Bus Service The Community Connector is a fixed route public transit system operated by the City of Bangor for the communities of the Greater Bangor Urbanized Area. These include Bangor, Brewer, Veazie, Orono, Old Town, and Hampden. The bus also provides service to Husson University, NESCom (New England School of Communications), Eastern Maine Community College and the University of Maine. Precipitation is relatively abundant and dependable. There are no “rainy” or “dry” seasons, though summer totals are usually less than in the winter. It generally doesn’t get muggy in Maine. In summary, the Bangor region is nearly free of extreme or very uncomfortable summer heat, and nights are generally comfortably cool, even on the hottest days. With clear skies, the night to day range in temperature is frequently more than 30 degrees, especially in spring and early summer. This fluctuation allows for comfortable days and cozy nights. Regional bus service The Bangor region is a hub for many commercial bus lines including Concord Trailways and Greyhound. In addition, the region is served by Cyr Bus Line which provides services for schools as well as coach bus excursions.

Hotels and Accomodations Bangor has a number of hotels and accommodations to provide you with a comfortable stay in the Queen City. Most notable is Hollywood Casino Hotel and Raceway, which oozes old Hollywood glamour. Among portraits of Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe, try your hand at nearly 1,000 slot machines, as well as table games such as blackjack, poker, and roulette. The casino boasts a full bar and the “Epic Buffet,” with delectable fare spanning the globe.
Theater If quality entertainment is what you seek, you won’t have to look far. Bangor is home to the Penobscot Theatre Company, which produces plays and musicals that are lauded across the state. Going to the theatre is a treat in and of itself, for it is housed in the historic Bangor Opera House, which is known for its brilliant architecture. Elsewhere in Bangor, Husson University’s Gracie Theater and the University of Maine’s Collins Center for the Arts offer a multitude of theatrical and dance performances.
Music In addition to the theater, there is an array of music in Bangor, including one of the country’s oldest community symphonies: the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. The BSO has played its beautiful live music throughout Maine since 1896. If you’re here in the summer, watch as the waterfront comes alive with music. The American Folk Festival, a free, public cultural festival, is a cultural mecca for music, featuring
20 different groups over three days. Likewise, the Waterfront Concert Series brings major musicians and bands to Bangor.

For visitors that are looking for quality dining and shopping, head to Bangor’s downtown section. It is here that you will find renowned restaurants of varying cuisine, including Indian, Thai, Japanese, Irish, and Italian. Local boutiques and shops make up the downtown, so be sure to stop in and see what the different vendors have to offer. Your visit to downtown wouldn’t be complete without stopping at the UMaine Museum of Art and Maine Discovery Museum and then sticking around the nightlife hub. The Rolland F. Perry City Forest features more than 680 acres of working forest, wildlife habitat, and miles of walking trails. The City Forest is also the entrance to the Orono Bog Boardwalk, a 4,200-footlong boardwalk that allows people to see a bog up close.
Maine Basketball Hall of Fame The Maine Basketball Hall of Fame's focus is to preserve and promote the history of basketball in the State of Maine. Located in the Corss Insurance Center, view the history of the game and the legendary athletes who participated.
