As we bask in the warm summer days, there’s a palpable sense of excitement in Mason County This season, our community is coming together for events that celebrate local businesses, foster connections, and enhance our vibrant community spirit One of the highlights is the highly anticipated Expo & Bite of Mason County
On July 19, Railroad Avenue in downtown Shelton will be transformed into a bustling street fair for the Expo & Bite of Mason County This event is a testament to the dynamic business landscape and community spirit of our region The Expo is not just an event; it’s an experience where local businesses and nonprofits showcase their offerings, interact with the community, and create lasting impressions
It is thrilling to see the sense of community well at work Community events and festivals are well underway thanks to incredible volunteers, lush flower baskets adorn our streets, and fun new activities like the Shelton Arts Walk are popping up!
I have also had the pleasure to attend national and statewide board meetings and roundtables recently. The content of those presentations and the considerations being made by leadership is not only eye-opening but it is encouraging Chamber’s stand at a unique position at the intersection of business, community and government We have a responsibility to convene partners and bring (sometime disparate) world views together, to identify issues, and work toward the solutions our communities need

Community Volunteers Bring a Shine to Downtown Shelton Icons
Now located in the heart of downtown Shelton, Caboose #700 serves as the Chamber’s Visitor Information Center and as a monument to the area ’ s logging history It was built in the 1920s in Shelton by the Peninsula Railway Company, a subsidiary of Simpson The unique side-door caboose was originally used to haul freight and passengers to and from logging camps, many of which were inaccessible by automobile The railway car remained in service through the late 1950s and was retired in 1965 It was then purchased by the Puget Sound Railroad Historical Association and displayed in Snoqualmie The Caboose returned to Shelton in 1983 and was placed behind the “Tollie” Shay, an homage to its travels over this exact location on Railroad Avenue for many years. Visitors are always encouraged to stop by, snap a selfie, and share their experiences with the hashtag #explorehoodcanal and #sheltoncaboose
You may have noticed that the second block of Railroad is looking a bit brighter these days Much-needed restoration work was conducted on two of Shelton's most cherished landmarks: the “Tollie” or Shay Locomotive #7; and the Caboose #700, which also serves as a visitor information center This project saw the community come together in a big way, displaying the spirit of community and collaboration that defines Shelton
The renovation project was made possible thanks to many dedicated volunteers Ilana, Mica, Silas Dickison, Eli, Duane, Dennis, Eric, Mark, John, Laurie, Anna, Mo, Grace, Pat, Irvin, Wayne, Charlotte, Luke, Joe, to name a few for their countless hours of labor scrubbing, repairing, and painting on these landmarks A special thanks goes out to the incredible Zach Hansen for his carpentry expertise and leadership on this project
The dedicated individuals collectively logged nearly 500 volunteer hours,
transforming the caboose and returning it to a vibrant, welcoming landmark
The Chamber budget for specialty timber was stretched by additional contributions from community partners and friends Builders FirstSource donated gallons and gallons of paint and supplies and City of Shelton who pressure washed and coordinated sidewalk closures Volunteers received daily coffee infusions from Urraco Coffee and local restaurants like the Railroad Tap Station provided lunches for the hardworking team
The Chamber is now looking forward to the next stage of the project, which involves transforming the inside of the Shelton Caboose Plans include the installation of historical photographs, showcasing logging artifacts, and leaning into Mason County’s tourism brand “Explore Hood Canal” and the “Wild Side of Washington ” Cooper Studios and Mason County Historical Society have already provided initial consultation on the second phase and, undoubtedly, community
support will be integral to those plans becoming reality
The ongoing efforts reflect the unwavering power of community collaboration and spirit of Shelton's residents in preserving their heritage and creating a vibrant community space The Chamber extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in this transformative project and looks forward to future celebrations of this community effort

PENINSULA CREDIT UNION’S ITIN PROGRAM OFFERS FINANCIAL ACCESS
Peninsula Credit Union (PCFCU) has long been a pillar of support in our community, exemplifying the role credit unions play in fostering growth and stability Their latest initiative, the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) lending program, showcases their commitment to inclusivity and financial empowerment This program aims to provide financial opportunities to individuals who might otherwise be excluded from traditional lending
Darla Kolbas, Lending Director and member of the Hispanic Initiatives team at Peninsula Credit Union, shared that, “The most rewarding aspect of launching the ITIN lending program has been witnessing the positive impact on our members' lives This program directly aligns with our mission to foster financial inclusivity and empower our members to achieve greater financial wellbeing By offering financial solutions to ITIN holders, we are breaking down barriers and helping individuals and families reach their financial goals ”
The ITIN lending program is a testament to PCU’s dedication to serving the community Born from the board of directors' desire to represent and serve all community members, this initiative is an effort to bridge the gap for those lacking a Social Security Number An ITIN allows individuals who are not eligible for a Social Security Number to pay taxes, and now, through PCU, it also opens doors to essential financial services.
Peninsula Credit Union’s grassroots outreach has been instrumental in the success of this program By actively engaging with the community and understanding their needs, PCU has been able to offer tailored financial solutions that foster economic stability and growth The program enables individuals to build credit, purchase homes, and invest in local businesses, creating a positive ripple effect throughout our region
Jim Morrell, CEO of Peninsula Credit Union, continues to advocate for systematic change through his service on America's Credit Unions Executive Board His work aims to ensure reliable financial services are accessible to everyone, reinforcing PCU’s motto, "Our priority is you "
The impact of the ITIN lending program extends beyond individual benefits By providing more residents with the opportunity to purchase homes, it stimulates the local housing market, supports property values, and fosters a stable real estate environment For small businesses, access to loans means more entrepreneurs can start or expand their ventures, driving local economic development and job creation
Through this program, PCU offers a variety of loans, including auto loans, credit cards, personal loans, and mortgages The commitment to inclusivity ensures that all community members have the opportunity to achieve their financial goals, regardless of Social Security Number status
One heartwarming example of the program ’ s success is the story of Porfirio, a community member who faced the risk of losing his family’s home Arriving at the Shelton branch with a briefcase filled with paperwork, Porfirio’s visit set in motion a series of events that showcased PCU’s dedication to their mission Assistant Branch Manager Charlie, along with Carmen, Darla, and Chris from the Lending Team, listened to Porfirio’s concerns, served him with empathy, educated him on his options, and cared for his well-being.
Upon careful evaluation, PCU’s legal team identified predatory lending practices in Porfirio’s contract In response, they initiated a Peninsula loan application to rescue him from this cycle Four days later, Porfirio received approval, bringing immense relief to him and his family His journey embodies PCU’s mission of serving with integrity, compassion, and dedication, and highlights the positive impact they make every day, one person at a time
Porfirio’s story is a testament to the power of community support and the difference a dedicated financial institution can make His gratitude for the support he received underscores the significant role PCU plays in helping community members achieve their financial dreams
The success of the ITIN lending program will be measured by the sense of safety and fulfillment felt by members who had previously felt underserved Peninsula Credit Union’s commitment to inclusivity and financial empowerment is a shining example of how financial institutions can drive positive change in our community

Joe’s Market & Shell Gas Station: Where Business Thrives on Family Values
When you walk into Joe’s Market & Shell Gas Station, you will find an atmosphere that is warm and welcoming like family Joe’s Market & Shell Gas Station has been family-owned for decades and is now operated by CJ Singh One of the managers, Mariann reminisced back to when it was just called “Food Mart” and lovingly remembers that CJ decided to do a big remodel and rename the location “Joe’s Market” in honor of his late father, [Joe Singh].
Mariann has worked for Joe’s Market for four years. Mariann has two daughters: one is grown up and out of the house; and the other daughter is 15. She also looks after her 83-year-old mother all by herself. Between taking care of the family and [taking care of the business], it sounds busy, but Mariann doesn’t feel worried. She effused that she has felt very supported by both her employer and the entire staff.
Mariann said, “I know that if there's ever like an emergency at home with one of my kids or my mom…or anything at all…I just have to call. CJ is an incredibly supportive boss. He's probably one of the best people I've ever worked for… And that's saying a lot. I feel like he genuinely cares about us as people and honestly, he just genuinely cares about this store This store is in his blood, I guess ”
Not only does Mariann have family in the area but, right at Joe’s Market, she works alongside her niece Ashley After meeting Mariann, we spoke with Ashley about the newest addition to Joe’s Market: serving Olympic Mountain Ice Cream, by the scoop, from the pails in their glass-top freezer Locally made Olympic Mountain Ice Cream offers an awesome variety of flavors And there are definitely some fan favorites! Ashley recounted the top selling flavors as whiskey praline, huckleberry swirl, and Kentucky pie
We literally got the inside scoop as Ashley gave us the rundown on the upcoming flavors: joining whiskey praline and Kentucky pie are peach cobbler, huckleberry cheesecake, and a passion fruit orange guava sorbet
Besides the ice cream, Ashley finds the work-life balance to be quite sweet as well She remarked, “It works out really great around here, because we're all moms so we're all in the same boat ” Ashley has two teenagers and a toddler at home that keep her active but happy She is a local who knows a lot of the locals who come through Joe’s Market and Shell Gas Station, “It pretty much is a family Our other nighttime girl, I grew up with her. The guy that works at nights? I was best friends with his sister in elementary school. Mariann has been here since I started.” Ashley plans to get her family through school and then ponder her own hopes and dreams after that. Right now, she’s just determined to provide for her family and have a good time along the way: “It's fun. We never have a dull moment in this place. We have lots of regulars.”
Joe’s Market is a hometown fixture. It's clear that this local gem is more than just a place to fuel up and grab a snack. Under CJ's leadership, the business has continued to thrive and much of that has to do with the amazing team that minds the store. In a time when community connections are crucial, CJ's dedication to uplifting local people and innovating in his operations is a shining example of how businesses can make a positive impact on their neighborhoods.

RESTORING THE DOCK AT PORT OF HOODSPORT
“
The Port of Hoodsport was established in 1951 In recent years, Port Commissioners have been working towards dock repairs and determining the best way to ensure the dock is built properly to handle the elements The Port is open for the public and visitors to enjoy along with its utilization by many local businesses right along Puget Sound
The Port of Hoodsport was deemed unsafe with structural issues and closed for a season. The decision significantly affected tourism, local access, and businesses Katherine Yackel from YSS Dive shared the struggles of sending staff back and forth over to Union to get their charter boat ready and help divers during the closure They saw a dramatic reduction in after-charters sales during that period because the customers weren’t making the trek back to their store to purchase souvenirs and branded merchandise There were also numerous customer complaints, requesting merchandise be delivered to them at off-site locations
Thanks to support from our state delegation, the most immediate repairs were made and the dock was reopened in time for shrimping this spring.
Cody Morris, Port Commissioner, shared that they were grateful to secure capital funds from the state to repair the dock. He stated that “the needed repairs were literally half of [the Port’s] annual budget ” He explained that with annual revenue of approximately $100,000 the district is not able to maintain and rehabilitate the dock and will need to rely on partnerships and other funding options to move towards long-term solutions
Beyond the steep cost, there are two major obstacles which affect maintenance and repairs to the dock at the Port of Hoodsport:
The Department of Natural Resources has radically changed how they comply with regulations by tying it into renewed leases As such, the Port is currently negotiating for a new 15year lease.
The current dock design is quite stressed by the elements When the dock was originally built it was much larger and extended out to create a breakwater, which prevent some of the extreme stressors caused by tides and winds The Port will consider this as it starts bidding for new dock builds
Everybody's really happy with the dock being back open so that way, we can pick up for the summer. ”
- Katherine Yackel, YSS Dive
For now, the Hoodsport residents have been enjoying the dock and especially the local businesses are grateful Yackel, of YSS Dive, is glad to report that “everybody's really happy with the dock being back open so that way, we can pick up for the summer And then Carlos, the owner of the Mexican restaurant next door is very excited as well Because usually, with the Charter, when they get back in, they all go eat over at his restaurant ” Stay tuned as the Shelton-Mason County Chamber follows the progression of the renovation project and shares future updates on how you can support the Port and the community efforts to bring a lasting dock for generations to come
CHAMBERS, E COUNTY CO
The Shelton-Mason County and North Mason Chambers, along with the Economic Development Council of Mason County, collectively serve as the voice of the business community and we make it a point to be at the heart of important issues like workforce development, quality of life, and civic engagement
That said, we are not political action committees and do not endorse candidates; we are independent organizations led by the private sector The Chambers and EDC provide nonpartisan information and host community education and outreach opportunities because we believe people have a right to know what candidates for public office believe about issues that affect our community
It is our goal to give every citizen the ability to learn more about policy making candidates and encourage you to get out and vote The Chambers & EDC will not host a candidate forum for the August 6 Primary; there will be an in-person event hosted prior to the General Election
For the primary, each candidate was invited to answer four questions: 1) What do you believe to be the role of a County Commissioner and what makes you an ideal candidate? 2) The County continues to face financial realities and tough decisions need to be made What increases to revenue or reductions to expenses might you propose? 3) What are your top policy proposals aimed at mitigating and preventing homelessness; and 4) If the County received $5 million in funding to be used for any purpose, what would you do with it and why?
There are six people running for two seats on the Mason County Commission; five replied. We hope these responses shine a light on their values and perspectives so you may begin to understand their viewpoints and make informed voting choices
Below we have printed the responses to the final question To read answers from the candidates for the other three questions, please visit masonchamber com /commissioner Candidate statements are published as they are as submitted to our office We do not make corrections of any kind or verify statements for truth or fact
When posed the question, “If the County received $5 million in funding to be used for any purpose, what would you do with it and why?” the candidates replied as follows:
William “Will” Harris
I would use $5 million to improve public safety and county services to citizens with two initiatives The first initiative is to use $3 2 million to hire, equip, and train eight (8) Sheriff Deputies This will provide added security and safety to all Mason County citizens by increasing the on-duty deputies from six (6) to eight (8) across the county 24/7 The $3 2 million will fund the deputies for two years
The second initiative is to use $1 8 million to identify and implement process efficiencies and information technology upgrades. The upgrades would be used to decrease the time in obtaining permits and licenses for citizens combined with internal county efficiency
The objective of the second initiative is to realize a $1 6 million per year savings to permanently fund the increase in Sheriff Deputies
Randy Neatherlin
I would either use it to pay down debt or invest in our smaller governments entities and nonprofits like we did with APRA and Cares act funding Some good examples include Fire District 4 where we gave $67,000 to put 5 new 10,000-gallon supply tanks around the areas where no major water source is available for forest and residential fire We spent money for areas to get Wi-Fi access, pumps for public water companies, electric infrastructure, and the list goes on and on We did this with the monies that came to us through these programs and found it to worked like seed money for better communities
Richard Beckman
If Mason County were to receive $5 million in funding, I would propose the following strategic allocations, designed to maximize the impact on the community’s well-being and economic development:
1 Infrastructure Advancement: Channel funds into the modernization and expansion of essential infrastructure, targeting water, sewer, roads, and bridges to bolster connectivity so we can create more housing Creating this infrastructure will generate a return of investment as well the ability to reinvestment of those funds
2 Housing Accessibility: Direct resources to the creation of affordable housing projects, addressing the critical shortage
3 Business Growth: Inject capital into the local economy by offering financial support to small businesses and entrepreneurial ventures, thereby catalyzing job creation and economic vitality
4. Health and Safety Enhancement: Upgrade public health facilities and enhance emergency response services, with a special focus on law enforcement and fire safety
5 Community Enrichment: Invest in the enrichment of public spaces such as parks, libraries, and community centers, which are cornerstones of civic life and cultural exchange
6 Technological Progress: Dedicate funds to the advancement of technology within government operations, enhancing efficiency and accessibility for all residents
This allocation strategy is designed to address immediate community needs while laying the groundwork for sustainable growth and development It reflects a commitment to improving residents’ quality of life, fostering a stable economy, and preserving the unique character of our county The emphasis on infrastructure, housing, and economic growth is in harmony with Mason County’s strategic vision and long-term goals, ensuring that the funds are utilized in alignment with the collective aspirations and priorities of our community
Tom Beben
The issues at the forefront of the minds of nearly every person I’ve spoken with over the last 3 months have been mental health, drug abuse and homelessness Using that funding to build a facility away from the downtown corridor that not only offers housing, but access to mental healthcare and drug treatment would be revolutionary for Mason County Integrating educational opportunities through Olympic College and SPSCC can also help these folks to obtain the tools necessary to make the next positive steps in their lives Sometimes it only takes one assisted step forward to make a lifetime of difference. We need to stop the cycle of passing blame and work together by taking an approach that tackles all three problems at once
Pat Tarzwell
I would love to see tax relief for the citizens, but we have a need that must be addressed and that is in the justice system Prosecuting attorneys and public defenders are an integral piece of our public safety Mason County often loses these attorneys to neighboring counties after significant training cost, thereby subsidizing our neighbors to our own detriment We must be more competitive in order to attract and keep attorneys if we are to maintain a constitutional justice system It is our duty to provide a fully functional public safety system for our citizens
