In her welcoming remarks, Chamber President & CEO Deidre Peterson effused, “Tonight, we come together to honor the heart and soul of Mason County – the businesses, leaders, and visionaries who shape our community This event is more than a celebration; it's a testament to the power of innovation, collaboration, and resilience "

Prior to the first course, Toast Sponsor Melanie Bakala of State Farm Insurance delivered an Ode to 2024 highlighting the momentous occasions and milestones reached, proclaiming “It’s important to take a minute, slow down, and celebrate our successes ”
Guests enjoyed a four-course meal which was sponsored by Mell Property Management, The Optical Shop of WA, Hood Canal Communications, and EI Kristyn & Son Construction, Inc The menu showcased Little Creek's culinary skills and made an upscale, seasonal spin on classic fare A shrimp in parmesan tuile was followed by a beet and goat cheese salad, salmon and braised short ribs, and an impressive trios of chocolate dessert or savory cheeses This year, as an alternative to the wine pairings, a non-alcoholic mocktail pairing was offered to guests
Peterson reaffirmed the Chamber's commitment to serve as a catalyst for business growth, a convener of leaders and influencers, and a champion for a strong community She detailed a few of the successes the organization achieved during 2024 including: a record high membership and increased engagement, strategic efforts to deepen relationships with community partners like the EDC and North Mason Chamber, workforce development programs including siting a Business Navigator to support pathways to employment and assist employers with talent acquisition, and continuing to advocating on issues that matter The 2025 board of directors then made their oath of office, vowing to represent the business interests of Mason County, and to work diligently to maintain a vibrant business community, promote tourism, and facilitate economic development ”
The culminating event, of course, was the awards presentation by Peterson 2024 Chamber Board Chair Jamie Mell of Mell Property Management All of the finalists were highlighted with a video lauding their accomplishments and the winners were named: Chairperson's Choice Zachary Hansen; Volunteer of the Year Billy Thomas of Peninsula Credit Union; Nonprofit of the Year New Horizons Communities - Shelton Veterans Village; Rookie of the Year Marmo Caffè & Gallery; Citizen of the Year Lisa Welander; Boss of the Year Kendall Lowe of Exceptional Foresters Inc.; and Business of the Year KMAS Radio

Zachary Hansen was honored by the Chamber Board Chair as an individual who has gone above and beyond to make a lasting impact on our community 2024 Chair Jamie Mell selected this individual for their tireless work on community projects and exemplifying hometown pride While often found quietly and helpfully supporting local events, this year the honoree tackled a huge project, gathering talented craftsmen and many generous hearts to restore one of Shelton’s most cherished landmarks: the Caboose and the Shay Locomotive, affectionately known as the “Tollie ” He truly embodies the qualities of humility, leadership, and determination
Billy Thomas was recognized by the Chamber staff as an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to the Chamber’s programs and activities He has truly has gone above and beyond to support the Chamber and its mission
Billy is a true advocate for the Chamber and our mission, serving on several committees and offering thoughtful and constructive feedback He consistently goes above and beyond, tirelessly supporting the Chamber’s efforts, connecting members, and uplifting others This year, he even shared his talent for storytelling and artistic touch, guest-writing articles for Business Matters

Habitat for Humanity of Mason County focuses on creating affordable housing and fostering sustainable futures for local families Over the past year, the organization built three homes on Park Street in Shelton and two more in Shorecrest, providing stable housing for five families These homes offer security and opportunity for decades to come In addition to new construction, Habitat completed 27 Home Preservation projects, helping families stay safe in their existing homes Habitat also operates two ReStores in Shelton and Belfair, which sell affordable home improvement goods and furniture while generating funds to support their mission Partnerships with organizations like Peninsula Credit Union and Turning Pointe Survivor Advocacy Center enhance their ability to serve the community Habitat actively engages with the community through collaborative efforts and events, strengthening connections across Mason County Habitat for Humanity continues to bring hope and self-sufficiency to families by addressing housing challenges through construction, preservation, and partnerships Their work reflects a deep commitment to collaboration and to improving lives throughout the region
Karen Hilburn Cancer Fund (KHCF) was established in 2004 to support uninsured and underinsured Mason County residents facing breast, cervical, ovarian, uterine, and endometrial cancers Over the past two decades, KHCF has provided financial assistance for medical expenses such as testing and diagnosis, while promoting prevention through free screenings and awareness initiatives To date, the Fund has helped over 500 individuals in Mason County In 2024, KHCF celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of supporting women in the local community This year, the organization donated $59,000 to Mason General Hospital to fund a new mammography server to improve patient care and diagnoses KHCF operates with an all-volunteer board and minimal overhead, maximizing the dollars available to support cancer-related expenses With funds raised exclusively within Mason County, KHCF is committed to local support and advocacy The organization remains dedicated to standing alongside residents in the fight against cancer, providing critical resources and compassionate care
New Horizon Communities - Shelton Veterans Village focuses on creating permanent supportive housing for individuals experiencing homelessness The Shelton Veterans Village, which opened in September 2023, offers 30 homes for homeless veterans, complete with a community center, shared kitchens, laundry facilities, and staff offices Residents also benefit from community gardens and receive personalized support from staff to meet their goals The organization collaborates with local partners such as Crossroads Housing Turning Pointe Survivor Advocacy Center, and Community Lifeline to address housing challenges in Mason County New Horizon Communities also participates in events like Point-in-Time Counts, Veterans Stand-Down, and Chamber activities to raise awareness and foster partnerships in the communities they serve Shelton Veterans Village provides veterans with a place to call home and access to essential services, peer support, and meaningful community connections Through tailored programs and collaboration, New Horizon Communities strengthens its role in addressing homelessness and fostering stability for vulnerable populations in the region
County Line Fire Pizzeria & Tapas, owned by Tobie and Gloriann Robinson, opened in October 2023 in the historic Old State Bank building on Railroad Avenue The restaurant offers artisan woodfired pizzas and creative tapas, combining traditional cooking techniques with a welcoming and vibrant dining atmosphere The restored building adds to its charm providing a unique experience for customers In 2024, their biggest achievement was fostering a supportive workplace culture that encouraged former employees to return, demonstrating the trust and camaraderie built within their team County Line Fire has also become involved in the community by supporting local nonprofits, including Turning Pointe Survivor Advocacy Center, and mentoring students at Shelton High School who are interested in culinary careers These efforts reflect their commitment to engaging with and contributing to local initiatives A community member noted, “County Line Fire Pizzeria & Tapas is a perfect fit for our small community, offering a unique dining experience with traditional wood-fired cooking setting them apart from other chain pizza ” The business continues to emphasize its dual commitment to quality service and meaningful local engagement, striving to remain a valued part of the Shelton community
Marmo Caffè & Gallery is a cultural hub in Shelton where art, community, and connection unite to inspire creativity and foster belonging Owner Isa Radojcic founded Marmo to blend her art, food, and hospitality passions into a cohesive space where people can connect and collaborate With a background in restaurant and hospitality management, including fine dining and arts organizations like The Getty Museum and grassroots collectives, Isa envisioned Marmo as a place to celebrate creativity and strengthen the community Since opening, Marmo has offered free community art programs, exhibitions, workshops, and events, making the arts accessible to all The monthly Artist Exchange poetry readings and Shelton Arts Walk exemplify Marmos role as a gathering space for cultural enrichment Reflecting on Marmo’s impact, a visitor shared, “Since Marmo has opened their doors, this business has brought a new aesthetic to downtown Shelton Isa and her staff offer delicious coffee, drinks, and breakfast and lunch options, plus there is always an event or two to attend The art gallery portion of the business is a welcome addition to the downtown experience, and we can’t wait to see what they continue to do ”
TheCuppiecakesQueen began as a passion project for owner Calandra Reiux, inspired by her love for baking and the joy it brings to others What started with scratch-made treats during a time when pre-made options weren’t affordable has grown into a thriving bakery offering handcrafted cupcakes, cakes, cookies, and more In its first year, TheCuppiecakesQueen established itself as an active participant in Mason County Now, the bakery supports local schools and organizations through donations, taking part in community events, and sharing leftover treats with those in need These efforts reflect Calandra’s commitment to giving back and making a positive impact within the community She has worked to create a welcoming space where people can connect, celebrate, and enjoy delicious treats in a warm and inclusive atmosphere Having just celebrated its first anniversary, TheCuppiecakesQueen continues to focus on growing its presence while maintaining strong connections to the community
Dan Cameron has called Shelton home for eight years, drawn to its welcoming community and natural beauty after a 25-year career in the U S Navy A disabled veteran, Dan dedicates his time to serving others, particularly his fellow vets As Commander of Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 60 and Junior Commander for Washington State he has helped hundreds of veterans access critical resources Beyond his work with veterans, Dan serves as President of the Board for Crossroads Housing, supporting families in overcoming homelessness Under his leadership, Crossroads has achieved a 97% success rate in helping individuals regain stability Dan also leads the Centennial Lions Club, where he has spearheaded projects such as building a new basketball court and creating event spaces for community use He organizes events like the Veterans StandDown and contributes to local organizations by volunteering for projects like building wheelchair ramps Dan’s commitment to service extends throughout Mason County, where his efforts focus on improving the lives of veterans and residents alike His leadership reflects a dedication to creating a stronger, more connected community
Lisa Welander has devoted her life to building connections and contributing to her community After a 40-year career in banking, including 25 years at Heritage Bank, Lisa transitioned into retirement with a focus on service Her commitment to Mason County is evident through her leadership roles, including Chairman of the Board for Exceptional Foresters, Inc , Treasurer for the Mason Health Foundation, and Chair of the Family Selection Committee for Habitat for Humanity of Mason County In addition to her nonprofit work, Lisa founded Fun Stuff Crafts in 2017 combining her passion for crafting with her desire to give back Through free classes at events like the Festival of Firs and donations of handmade items, Lisa shares creativity and joy with others Reflecting on her impact, one nominator remarked, “Above all, Lisa Welander is kind! She is a true friend to everyone and is always willing to help and make our community a better place She is a gift ” Beyond her professional and volunteer contributions, Lisa treasures her family, which includes her husband of 40 years, two sons, two daughters-in-law, and two grandchildren Lisas dedication to service and her family reflects her values of love, connection, and generosity, making her a cherished part of the Mason County community
Matt & Melissa Wood have spent over two decades dedicated to community service in Shelton and Mason County Married since 1996 and parents to two sons, they balance careers in law enforcement with impactful volunteer efforts For 13 years, the Woods have been leaders in Mason County’s scouting community, founding Troop 9112 in 2016 and growing it to over 20 scouts, including four Eagle Scouts In 2023, they expanded their efforts by establishing a girls troop, which now includes seven scouts Matt’s leadership includes guiding a 100-mile trek at Philmont Scout Ranch, while Melissa’s training shaped the troop’s youth-led program Beyond scouting, Melissa chairs Kristmas Town Kiwanis’ Holiday Magic committee, organizing the annual holiday parade and downtown festivities Both are active volunteers with Turning Pointe Survivor Advocacy Center and other civic organizations, contributing to local causes through hands-on service A community member shared, “Matt and Melissa are upstanding citizens with hearts to serve ” Matt and Melissa are dedicated to fostering relationships and supporting youth development, reflecting their commitment to building a stronger community Their efforts have positively impacted countless families and continue to inspire others to get involved in Shelton and beyond
Chad White has been with Mason County Garbage & Recycling for 22 years, advancing from driver to Site Manager During his tenure, he has managed operational growth, implemented safety improvements, and overseen major initiatives, including a new waste transportation contract Chad emphasizes teamwork and open communication encouraging employees to take ownership of their roles while providing support and training He has worked to create a culture where employees feel heard and valued One team member shared, “Chad leads by example, prioritizing open communication and offering the tools we need to succeed He has a way of making everyone feel heard and respected ” Under his leadership, the company has expanded its workforce, reduced safety incidents, and enhanced operational efficiency Chad also collaborates with his team to address challenges and implement solutions that benefit the organization His leadership reflects a focus on fostering a productive and collaborative work environment while managing the complexities of a growing business
Kendall Lowe has dedicated nearly 15 years of her professional journey to Exceptional Foresters Inc , beginning as a Direct Support Professional and advancing to her current role as Program Supervisor Overseeing client funds, medical needs, and team development, Kendall works to ensure effective operations and team collaboration She focuses on open communication and tailoring training to meet the diverse needs of her team members Kendall believes in fostering an inclusive workplace where individuals are encouraged to contribute and grow professionally In her management style, she addresses challenges with a focus on solutions, ensuring that both employee needs and organizational goals are met Colleagues have shared positive feedback about her leadership style One team member remarked, “Kendall is an empathetic leader who brings out the best in her team by recognizing individual strengths and offering support when it’s needed most ” She also emphasizes maintaining a balance between accountability and collaboration, creating an environment where team members can thrive while meeting the needs of the clients they serve
Scott White, a co-owner at South Sound Appliance, emphasizes open communication, teamwork, and professional development With 21 years of Navy experience, he brings a structured yet adaptable approach to leadership Scott encourages his team to take initiative and supports their growth by providing the resources they need to succeed He has played a key role in the company’s participation in community events, including the Holiday Magic Christmas Parade, where South Sound Appliance earned recognition for its creative float designs Scott balances operational needs with fostering a collaborative environment, ensuring employees feel supported in both their professional roles and personal commitments One employee shared, “Scott creates an environment where we feel encouraged to grow and take on challenges His patience and dedication make him an approachable and effective leader ” He focuses on promoting a workplace culture where employees are empowered to achieve shared objectives Scotts leadership approach is grounded in clear communication and providing opportunities for team members to contribute meaningfully to the company’s success
KMAS Radio, a staple in Mason County since 1962, has undergone significant transformation over the past 18 months under new ownership by Jeff Slakey, John Hansen, and Rachel Hansen Returning to its roots, KMAS has reintroduced music and strengthened its commitment to being “The Voice of Mason County ” This year, KMAS is most proud of the return of loyal listeners and the influx of new audiences, who have made the station their go-to for music, local news, and community stories In a competitive landscape with satellite radio and podcasts, KMAS continues to grow its audience and reconnect with Mason County residents The station actively supports the community by promoting local nonprofit organizations through free interviews, on-air programming, and video features One listener noted, “The crew at KMAS is so giving of their time and support They are always willing to donate time to give community events publicity ” These efforts allow nonprofits to share their missions and events with a wide audience, fostering greater community awareness and engagement KMAS highlights the people and stories that shape Mason County Through its AM and FM broadcasts, online streaming, and mobile app, KMAS ensures that its content reaches every corner of the county and beyond The station’s efforts to rebuild trust and engagement exemplify its mission of serving as a hub for local information, entertainment, and community connection
Mason County Clean Out's & Junk Removal is committed to providing professional, ethical, and compassionate junk removal sAervices while supporting the local community Over the past year, the business hauled 101 tons of waste to the transfer station, recycled 23 tons locally, and donated nearly 150 pieces of furniture and 3 tons of textiles to families and organizations in need Recognizing the barriers some individuals face, the company contracts with the state of Washington, APS, and DSHS to assist residents overwhelmed by clutter, offering a valuable lifeline to vulnerable populations The business also operates a donation program that provides free junk removal services to a low-income, fixed-income, or disabled individual each quarter By emphasizing environmental responsibility and community engagement, Mason County Clean Outs extends its impact beyond its core services Their commitment to Mason County is further reflected in their support for local charities, including Shelton and Belfair Youth Connection, Crossroads Housing, and Habitat for Humanity These partnerships ensure that reusable items, such as furniture and tools, are redirected to help families in need Through their work, Mason County Clean Outs continues to uphold their mission of serving the community with integrity, care, and a focus on creating a cleaner, more connected environment
Steph's Espresso celebrated 25 years of serving the Shelton community this year, marking a journey of resilience, hard work, and dedication to giving back Founded by an owner who overcame personal challenges with the support of family, Stephs has become a local favorite known for its great coffee, exceptional customer service, and deep community ties Every customer is treated as a friend, and the stand has become a place where people can connect and feel valued As one customer shared, “Steph is all about community and treats us all like family ” In 2024, Steph’s Espresso hosted the Community Easter Egg Hunt, an event that featured 80,000 eggs, 12 new bikes, and 120 prize baskets Families unable to attend were included through deliveries, ensuring everyone could participate This effort highlighted Steph’s commitment to inclusivity and community spirit Beyond events, Steph’s Espresso supports local nonprofit organizations, youth sports, school fundraisers, and charity auctions Last year, they distributed 1,000 pairs of socks and over 500 coats to those in need, while also helping connect residents with resources like The Youth Connection, Crossroads Housing, and food banks Steph’s Espresso remains a cornerstone of Shelton, dedicated to fostering connections and making a difference through acts of kindness and community support
