OUR COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION

Deepening Relationships and Supporting Our Community

Our Community Credit Union’s mission is to develop lifelong relationships by empowering our members, employees, and communities with personalized service to live their best financial lives.

When we delve deeper into supporting this mission, it becomes clear that it takes a collective effort to foster trust and pool resources This collaboration creates an environment where members can not only thrive financially but also enjoy a safe and supportive community

OURCU teams actively engage in local events and causes, volunteer their personal time to serve others, and listen attentively to the needs of members and communities in every interaction By being present and attentive, the credit union can better understand local area needs and provide support wherever possible In August of 2024, OURCU was approached by partners at the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) of Des Moines, Iowa with an opportunity to elevate our existing community support through their Member Impact Fund program

This matching grant program, which was introduced in 2023, will provide nearly $12 million to eligible Washington organizations in order to strengthen communities in targeted areas of FHLB Des Moines’ district. The Member Impact Fund provides $3 for every $1 of an eligible FHLB Des Moines member's grant donation to strengthen the ability of not-forprofits or government entities to serve the affordable housing or community development needs of their communities The Member Impact Fund awards are given in partnership with member financial institutions to communities in their districts to become more vibrant places to live and work

Upon hearing of this unique opportunity to further support local needs, OURCU teams

jumped into action, reviewing existing commitments of support that met the FHLB qualifications and timelines, ensuring that all aspects of the application process were completed quickly for the organizations that qualified

In the end, OURCU was able to submit seven applications that consisted of a mix of local non-profits and local law enforcement agencies in Mason and Grays Harbor counties and are proud to announce that all seven applications were approved and funded by the FHLB Between the Credit Union’s commitment and the FHLB match back funds, the total dollars vested back into the community sings to the tune of $1,039,200 in combined funds

Community is in the Credit Union name, and OURCU proudly collaborates with organizations like the Federal Home Loan Bank to amplify our local impact This partnership not only bolsters our members' financial well-being but also helps create safe and healthy environments where everyone can thrive

“Due to the efforts of OURCU’ s CFO, Reid Miller and Business Development Officer, Shannon Henry, the credit union eagerly seized the opportunity to enhance our commitment to supporting local organizations by applying for the Member Impact Fund program. By recognizing and acting on this opportunity, OURCU and FHLB were able to quadruple the overall impact for these organizations, compared to our existing commitments of support.”

Shelton Inn Welcomes New Ownership and Unveils Transformative Renovations

The Shelton Inn, a landmark at the gateway of downtown since 1965, has entered a new chapter under new ownership Innkeepers Damon Handley and Rachel Clark are longtime Washington residents, deeply-rooted in the area With a shared passion for hospitality, they are revitalizing the inn, aiming to retain its mid-century charm while upgrading to modern comforts

This renovation, which includes fresh flooring, modern heating and air conditioning, and updated in-room amenities, showcases their commitment to offering a welcoming and contemporary experience for all their guests

The couple first encountered the Shelton Inn serendipitously, drawn by the property's downtown location and its significance in the Shelton community “When we toured the place, it just felt right,” Rachel shared, explaining how the opportunity to purchase came quickly At the end of July, Damon and Rachel officially took ownership and immediately began work on their vision to restore and enhance the Shelton Inn's appeal for locals and tourists alike

Renovations are currently underway throughout the property, with nearly half of the 32 rooms already transformed The improvements feature new carpet, fresh paint, modern fixtures, and decor that embraces a cozy, woodsy vibe

To create a more inviting atmosphere, Damon and Rachel removed the fortress-like plexiglass barriers from the front desk, opting for a welcoming, customer-centered lobby area Outside, the inn’s once-infamous purple facade is making way for a sleek color scheme

Additionally, the beloved Blondie’s Restaurant space is undergoing a makeover, with plans to reopen soon under a new name that pays homage to Blondie’s, the iconic establishment that holds a special place in Shelton’s heart “We’re keeping the legacy of Blondie’s alive,” Rachel explained, adding that they plan to introduce a familyfriendly diner atmosphere, making it a staple for locals and visitors once again Community involvement is at the heart of their plans Damon and Rachel have already attended local business meetings and are keeping residents informed on their progress through active engagement on social media and addressing questions from the community as they arise Their dedication extends to keeping beloved aspects of the inn intact, including its retro Shelton Inn sign and unique wood details that reflect Shelton’s logging history.

Both Damon and Rachel bring substantial hospitality experience, with Damon having owned a restaurant and Rachel’s family having deep roots in the industry Their commitment to the Shelton community and its legacy promises to breathe new life into the inn, making it a refreshed yet familiar landmark for both visitors and Shelton locals

For a closer look at the changes, stay tuned for the grand reopening of the restaurant and more updates on the Shelton Inn’s renovations You can also book a stay and experience the new Shelton Inn firsthand by visiting sheltoninn com

Newbies to the area may realize Shelton established its roots as a timber town, but how many know Christmas trees are what gave it an initial claim to fame? During the 1950s and 1960s, an abundance of Douglas Fir trees were harvested year after year The sheer volume of pre-cut evergreens being shipped worldwide by container ships and rail cars is how the town was dubbed “Christmas Tree Capital of the Nation” with literally millions being sold annually Although other locations have since surpassed Shelton in production, tree farms are still prevalent in Mason County

Urraco Coffee is deeply rooted in a meaningful history The journey began in the small coffee-growing village of Urraco, Honduras, where the Dorcys first connected with the local community while providing aid after Hurricane Mitch devastated the region in 1998 What started as a humble endeavor to bring Urraco's coffee to Shelton, Washington, and share it with friends and family, quickly ignited a passion for roasting The mission was clear: create a roasting company dedicated to sourcing, roasting, and serving high-quality coffee from around the world From the roots in Honduras to the coffee served each day, Urraco remains committed to delivering a coffee experience that’s both exceptional and meaningful

In the spirit of community, the Chamber is launching a heartfelt appeal to residents and businesses to support its annual Beautification Program The program, a symbol of civic pride, not only transforms our city into a winter wonderland with twinkling Christmas lights but also graces our streets with vibrant summer flower baskets As the Chamber aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of our beloved city, it is calling upon the generosity of the community to ensure the program's continued success

Help Brighten Our Community & Thank You Sponsors

The holiday season is here, filling Shelton with festive spirit! Once again, the Chamber and our community partners will transform the town with sparkling lights and cheerful decorations Railroad Avenue will shine with strands of lights, and vibrant bulbs will wrap around the trees lining the street.

This winter, the lamp posts once adorned with summer blooms will be decked out in tinsel and shimmering ornaments, bells, and stars Santa and his reindeer will take flight over the intersection at 7th & Railroad, while Tollie and the caboose will be dressed in fresh greenery, generously donated each year by Wild Greens International Kristmas Town Kiwanis will also embrace the season by decorating Overlook Park and Evergreen Square’s clocktower with lush garlands provided by Continental Floral Hiawatha

We still need to raise $20,000 to make our annual goal for the beautification program The funds we raise now will direct how many flower baskets and lights we can hang next year

Shelton’s annual transformation into Christmastown USA brings the community together to celebrate in a spirit of holiday unity This beautification effort is made possible through generous donations from local businesses and residents, helping the Chamber Foundation fund holiday lights in winter and vibrant flower baskets during summer

If you love the holiday lights and decorations that bring joy to Shelton, please consider supporting the Chamber’s beautification campaign Contributions of any size make a difference!

Donations to the Chamber’s Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, can be made online at masonchamber.com/beautification or by mailing a check to SMCCF, PO Box 2389, Shelton, WA 98584 For more details, call us at (360) 426-2021

Donations will directly contribute to preserving and expanding this beloved tradition, allowing our city to continue emanating holiday cheer for residents and visitors alike The success of the Beautification Program hinges on the collective efforts of our community

For additional details, don’t hesitate to call us directly at (360) 426-2021

In the spirit of the season, let's come together to ensure our city shines bright throughout the year Your support makes a difference, and together, we can keep our community beautiful, festive, and full of pride

Community partners are paramount to carry out this plan year over year. Specifically, the ongoing support of City of Shelton, Hood Canal Communications, Mason PUD 3, and Skookum Rotary who contribute time, money, and resources to the setup and maintenance of beautification projects

Greenery adorning Tollie & the Caboose generously donated by Wild Greens International

Raves! MASONCOUNTY

Mason County Humane Society’s staff and Vets are the best The low cost spay and neutering services are the best Everyone gave our cats first class care Highly recommend using their services and donating to keep them going when you can They are amazing

Bradley Air did an amazing job installing the HVAC system on my house They were punctual, clean, and very professional They installed the inside and outside unit quickly and had a professional electrician team come in shortly after to power the unit Once the system was powered, they made sure all was working and showed me a temperature gauge of the air coming out the inside unit, gave me a rundown of how to use the remote and showed me the filters and when they should be cleaned Been about 4 Days since the install and I’m finding myself turning up the temp or putting on a sweater because of how efficiently the system does its job! Highly recommend their service!

Suzan s Grill is seriously one of the best restaurants in Mason County The food is consistently delicious every single time I usually go for the John Henry omelet (chicken fried steak/onions/peppers/gravy) but they also have a seriously amazing hollandaise sauce If you haven t been there yet check them out!

– Shaniah Crossen

Huge shout out and rave for sue and her whole crew at VanderWal’s Amazing people and they did a fantastic job on my vehicle They kept us informed at every step and did exactly what we wanted and more It was no small job Thank you so much Sue for all your kindness Our vehicle runs better today than it did when we got it

I WORKED WITH KATHY BADER AT BAKALA STATE FARM TO SET UP A HOME INSURANCE POLICY ON OUR FIRST HOME BUNDLED WITH AUTO INSURANCE. KATHY IS GREAT, RESPONDS WITH A DAY (USUALLY LESS) AND ANSWERED ALL OUR QUESTIONS!
