“Our community is blessed to have entrepreneurs and businesses such as tonight’s finalists who make Mason County even better. This is especially impactful in the recent past! Although you do great things simply because it is the right thing to do, tonight we gather to recognize and honor the impact of your efforts,” said Chamber President & CEO Heidi McCutcheon. She then introduced the evening’s major sponsors, noting that the night would not have been possible without their support. A word was shared by Squaxin Island Tribal Chairman Kristopher Peters on behalf of Premier Sponsor Little Creek Casino Resort; Reception Sponsor Nolberto Chavez of Beko’s Trees & Wood Carving, Print Sponsor Kelsie Rudnick of The Shopper and Photography Sponsor Amy Cooper of Cooper Studios. Podium Sponsors Lori Morgan & Karen Schade of Edward Jones shared in the centennial celebration, while Champagne Sponsor Brad McCutcheon of Bradley Air Company congratulated the finalists, and Toast Sponsor Melanie Bakala of State Farm Insurance appeared in a music video performing the Ode to 2021 with Tanya Frazier of Crossroads Housing, inviting all to “Raise your glass high, let’s make a toast to the rest of our year: to love and heath and to lots of cheer!” As the program continued, guests enjoyed a four-course meal, paired with wines, which were sponsored by Jalisco Tortillas, EI. Kristyn & Son Construction, Inc., The Optical Shop of WA, and Heritage Bank. McCutcheon detailed five successes the organization achieved during 2021: record high membership, a strong foundation, high-quality engagement, tackling tough issues, and curating unique, local experiences. The 2022 Chamber Board was officially installed by the Honorable George Steele. Then Chamber CEO Heidi McCutcheon surprised Deidre Peterson with a token of appreciation marking her ten years of service to the organization, commenting how different the organization would be without Deidre’s influence, her business acumen, and her thoughtful insight.

President's Choice
The President's Choice Award goes to Julie Sund Nichols. Chosen by outgoing Board President, Melanie Bakala, who says, "There are people who we see working in the community, and there are those who work behind the scenes. She works quietly on many local efforts including passing the Shelton Schools Construction Bond and laying the groundwork to build a YMCA. She has great political savvy and has helped ensure that quality leadership is elected to represent our community. Julie doesn’t seek the limelight – but works tirelessly in the background for Mason County."
Congrats Dawn! Page 6 - Business Matters
PUD 3 is lucky to have your community spirit on our team!

Boss of the Year Finalists CHERYL SESNON was raised in a military family and lived in Europe for eight years before moving back to the west coast. She worked early on in food and beverage and, after marrying her husband in Seattle, she owned a custom catering company for many years. She is a humanitarian and proven leader, honored for transforming struggling organizations to a position of strength and sustainability. After earning her Masters in Nonprofit Leadership from Seattle University and surviving a bout of breast cancer, she found her way to the helm of Harmony Hill Healing Retreat in 2019. There, she has surrounded herself with people who are “creative, committed, and hardworking, with incredible work ethics.” Her team members portray her as fair, supportive, and decisive. Nominations pointed to the challenges brought on by the pandemic and explained, “Nonprofit work is always hard and challenging; It takes a special person to lead: passionate, strategic, compassionate and energetic. These words exemplify Cheryl. She is a strong model for leadership, always thinking of organization and the staff first.”
JAMIE MELL is one of Shelton’s most trusted brokers, a distinguished business owner, and active community leader. Jamie is a fourth generation Mason County native with business entrepreneurship deep in her bones. With more than a decade of real estate experience, she purchased John L. Scott Shelton and Mell Property Management just over three years ago. She avows her success is driven by her desire to leave a legacy for her children, showing them that anything is possible with hard work. Employees tout Jamie’s focus on a happy work culture and described her as “a strong empowering leader, who goes above and beyond” and someone who “give back to the community, those in her office, and her clients.” The team gets together weekly to pick-up trash throughout the downtown. As an owner and managing broker, Jamie consistently reaches out to her agents and employees and asking what they need to be successful and where they might be struggling. In response to those answers, Jamie launched an innovative training program to onboard new agents.
MELANIE BAKALA has been serving the Mason County community since 2010 as owner and operator of State Farm Insurance. Melanie has lived in the South Sound area with her husband Jim and three children for 18 years. She has grown to two offices with twelve employees and counts being able to provide quality, local jobs as one of her greatest joys. She and her managers work to create individual plans to help employees grow in their careers; several former employees have ultimately gone on to open their own offices. One nominator said, “She is supportive of our goals and growth even if it’s not with her.” Melanie also strives to build an epic work culture built on integrity and support. Her team pointed to her willingness to think outside the box and make sure they have what they need at the office and in their personal lives. “Melanie is a teacher, a coach, a leader in all that she does in the office as well as for the community. She cares deeply about her customers and her employees and people.”

Finalists AMY COOPER moved to Mason County with her college sweetheart and opened Cooper Studios in 2008. Quickly building the business and her reputation within the community, Amy generously lends her talents and creativity to numerous organizations—from education and arts to historic preservation and community programs. Last year, she donated her time working to keep Forest Festival alive. Always humble, Amy describes herself simply as a mom, a wife, and an artist. She is passionate about a strong community, traditions, and creating memories. In her role as Forest Festival Association Vice President, she was instrumental in transforming the event during the ongoing uncertainty of the pandemic. She, “with her cheery attitiude, along with a ton of help from others,” was successful in honoring the history and family-friendly nature of the festival by hosting a series of micro-events throughout the summer season. She continues to lead Shelton Downtown Merchants and co-coordinates Halloween Spooktacular and Holiday Magic as well.
DAWN MYERS is a lifelong resident of Shelton who claims her three sons and five grandkids as her greatest accomplishments. As a young mom, she went on to earn her CPA and a master’s degree in Forensic Accounting. By day Dawn is an accountant at Mason PUD 3, while she dedicates many of her nights and weekends to improving the local community. Over the past two decades she served as a coach and supporter for countless youth activities and sports (even when her children were not on some teams) and she currently holds the Treasurer’s post for both United Way and the Youth Connection. Dawn effortlessly brings together the local residents with the community in need. While she is best known for “Fill the Truck” drives, nominators gushed about her swift organization of the Haunted Huff N Puff program this past Autumn and pointed to her can-do spirit in successfully assembling volunteers to support Toys for Tots, touting, “Mason County is incredibly blessed to have someone as special as her to always be rooting for them, but most importantly, taking action to make the difference she wants to see.”
RITA ANDREWS is an active member and lifetime servant as a Missionary and Assistant Minister of the Skokomish Tschudub Shaker Church and the Skokomish Indian Nation. Her focus has been to be a reflection of the good ways of life that her ancestors lived and died. Many times she shares this goodness through food and worship. Rita rallies her community by providing hot meals, especially in the winter, ensuring that no one goes hungry. This year she worked hand in hand with members of her church to make vast improvements to the property, including building a safe ramp, creating a flower and fruit garden, upgrading the kitchens, and adding a specialized cooking area for traditional native foods. She also donates countless hours to native American communities near and far. She is Vice Chair of Native JourneyWoman Inc. and co-founder of Intertribal Paddle for the Battle Against Cancer. She also engages local children in the songs, prayers, and stories to encourage strong and healthy lifestyles. A nomination shared that, “Rita creates environments where you feel a strong sense of belonging and hope. She transcends what it means to go above and beyond. Rita never has expectations of receiving what she gives out back. She does it all with a golden heart.”
Page 9 - Business Matters
Finalists KRISTMAS TOWN KIWANIS CLUB has long been at the forefront of meeting our community’s needs. Since 1973 they have served the youth of Mason County by supporting organizations such as Scouts and South Mason Youth Soccer, awarding scholarships to graduating high school students, collecting school supplies and Christmas gifts for Mason County children in need, and supporting fellow nonprofits. They consider themselves small but mighty, with only two dozen members stepping up to support a variety of programs. Last summer they amplified their support for Forest Festival in its alternative format, sponsoring activities in addition to the beer garden at the weekend events held along Railroad Ave. One nomination gushed, “Kristmas Town Kiwanis supported Forest Festival big time this year! They graciously trucked in their kiddie train, kids games, and wagon every month to Timber Days which added so much to the activities for the weekend. Kristmas Town is always ready to jump in and help.” Perhaps best known for their collaboration in presenting Holiday Magic, which was also reinvented last year to span the entire month of December.
MASON COUNTY SENIOR ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION plays a huge part in the lives of seniors across the county and has since 1976. The nonprofit seeks to enhance the quality of life of senior adults in our community through recreation, information, education, and nutritional services, including health and wellness programs. Many of these are offered at the association’s senior center, which functions with the support of its volunteers and the community, and serves as a hub for socialization and for the good of the community. The association donated its space to Toys for Tots last year and served as a cooling center during the summer’s excessive heat. During the pandemic, utilization of the space was altered to meet specific needs: food donations were disbursed via a drive-through line and commodities were shared to ease shortages until reopening eased. The association also moved many of its programs online and operated a phone tree, reaching out to alleviate isolation. Their nominator admitted, “I didn’t realize their importance and impact… many seniors are undernourished and alone. They give seniors a place to eat a hot meal (whether they can afford it or not) and a place to socialize, take art classes, play games, and exercise instead of just staying home and being sedentary.”
THE YOUTH CONNECTION is a drop-in center with an all-inclusive, open-door policy. The nonprofit’s flagship location is in the heart of downtown Shelton and serves youth and young adults ages 12-24. The facility provides a safe place for young people to connect, build life skills, and access services. There are daily activities, lunch, Wi-Fi access, homework/tutoring support, clothing closet, hygiene items, and a myriad of other resources. They have built strong partnerships with schools, mental health organizations, law enforcement, and community businesses. With the closure of school campuses, Shelton Youth Connection worked diligently to engage young people even as they struggled with an increase in clients experiencing depression, suicide, drug and alcohol usage, and frustration. “They have never made me feel lost or hopeless and always make me feel warm & welcome. Truly, they have helped me look forward to seeing tomorrow.” says one of the youth. Last year, the organization expanded with a Belfair location and two off-site shelters, while securing funding to accommodate a dozen transitional housing units.

Rookie of the Year Finalists FAT CAT COFFEE SHOP is owned and operated by entrepreneur and coffee aficionado Feather Meredith. Feather’s heart lies with animals and animal rescue. In fact, she has been a volunteer and adopter at both Adopt a Pet and Kitten Rescue of Mason County, where she is also a neonatal kitten foster. The business started with the idea of a cat café and was then reinterpreted with a cat theme woven into the conventional coffee shop. Fat Cat originally opened in 2019 on a side street downtown and last year moved on to the main street. The quaint space offers delicious coffees, teas, and energy drinks as well as a gifts like punny stickers, delightful gifts, and seasonal treats. The coffee shop itself is an avid supporter of Kitten Rescue and offers a selection of cat toys—unique, handmade items from fellow shelter volunteers—with the proceeds from those toys going directly to the charity. A nominator lauded Feather and Fat Cat Coffee for portraying, “what Shelton is: a hometown small business desiring to do well.”
HAWKS VIEW INSURANCE offers personal insurance, business insurance, and employee benefits solutions. In 2016, hometown residents Hauke and Julie Hansen purchased a business with offices in Kitsap & Jefferson Counties. Recently they expanded to two new offices, choosing to locate their headquarters in the landmark 1921 building in downtown Shelton. One nomination read, “During this challenging time, I found it very brave and adventurous for any business to give a new venture a go. Hawks View Insurance has been a great addition to our business community, providing excellent customer service and coverage options. We are so lucky to have them!” Hauke is an experienced insurance agent with more than twenty years in the industry and leads a professional team that is big enough to deliver and small enough to care. The Hansens are staunch community supporters and, in addition to contributions they make to nonprofits, they also encourage staff to volunteer their time and talent to local efforts and service organizations.
KEALY ELECTRIC, LLC is a family-owned electrical company offering a range of services from rough-in and adding service, to panel work and repairs for both residential and commercial properties. Owner Colton Kealy decided in high school to pursue a career as an electrician with the goal of owning his own company by the time he turned 25. After gaining practice throughout the South Sound, he landed an electrical apprenticeship with a local company, where he continued to build his skills and acumen before making the leap to open his own business in 2020. Electricians were in high demand throughout the pandemic even while supply shortages posed a significant challenge. And still, he has earned a reputation as reliable, accessible, and professional. A nominator shared, “Most new businesses have a hard time staying afloat the first couple years, but Colton and his wife Morgan realize the importance of paying it forward.” That is evident in their generosity towards community projects and charitable contributions towards local schools, Habitat for Humanity, and the Chamber’s beautification program. Colton also serves as a member of the career and technical advisory board at Shelton High School encouraging students to pursue trades.

Business of the Year Finalists BELCO FOREST PRODUCTS moved its manufacturing facility to Shelton in 2008, positioning for substantial growth through facility and human capital investments. Despite a lack of business during the pandemic, Belco kept its employees on a 40-hour work week schedule, resulting in readiness to meet demand when construction resumed and new housing starts increased rapidly in 2021. Beyond competitive wages and benefits to its employees, they also target enrichment through the upward career advancement, pay for employees to access foundational education and partners to provide second chance work opportunities. Belco’s leadership team also volunteer on the Olympic College Welding Advisory group and oversee internships for local high school students. Beyond growing sales and employment, the company supports numerous community activities focuses on education, shelter, and youth. Community Partner Education Grant to fund teacher grants, Kristmas Town Kiwanis’ Bluegrass from the Forest Event, the Love INC Golf tournament, and Homes for Our Troops are just a few who benefited last year.
SENTRY MINI STORAGE is just one arm of Gedora Business Company. The company operates through its fully owned subsidiaries—Sentry Mini Storage, Shelton Laundry & Cleaners, Contract Equities Inc and Gedora Leasing Co.—and is owned by Michael & Anita Fox and managed by daughter Jennifer. They have strong ties to the Mason County community, with entrepreneurial efforts dating back to the early 1950s. They are involved in many community events and support nonprofits such as Salvation Army, Crisis Pregnancy Center, Shelton Youth Football, Turning Pointe Survivor Advocacy Center, Mason County Christian School, and various sports programs saying. “We want to see our community thrive and be a community that we can all be proud to live in, raise our kids and grandkids, and call home.” During an especially challenging time, Sentry has actually expanded its storage facilities with the addition of Hoodsport Storage and Freeway Mini Storage. They also modernized their systems to provide contactless and more flexible service options.
SKYLINE DRIIVE-IN is an independently-owned theater nestled along Highway 101; one of only five remaining in the entire state. In addition to offering a variety of films for our entertainment, the drive-in quietly and continually gives back to the community. Throughout the pandemic, the dedicated management and staff used their unique business model to create unique opportunities for groups to celebrate and socialize in a COVID-safe way. They even offered numerous charities and nonprofits such as Shelton Family YMCA half price rental rates, on top of which they donated the remaining half to the cause. Hailed by one as “the first time many families had an opportunity to venture out of their homes to enjoy something that they had been longing,” they served more than 200 families at just the one event. For decades Skyline Drive-In has creatively partnered with its regular customers and its neighbors to make a profound impact, being hailed as, “a true supporter of the community.”
THE PATTY WAGON, owned Patricia Perry, has provided wheelchair accessible transportation that and helps retain clients’ independence since 2012. The business gives back to the community by donating services to support local first responders, the senior center, and career services, partnering with event organizers to offer safe ride options, and by making donations to youth sport and to nonprofits like Community Lifeline. During the pandemic, they constantly adapted to serve its customers, facing challenges of reduced staffing and ridership due to health concerns as well as supply shortages. They made sure that Healthcare workers, store employees, and patients made it to their destinations safely. The Patty Wagon continues to focus on building connections and fostering relationships, while being avid supporters of local parades, career expos, festivals like Hoodstock, and many others.
