and Projects this A bound Spring Heidi McCutcheon, Chamber Director

As Tolstoy so aptly put it, spring is the time of plans and projects; this spring is no different. The number of projects happening in Mason County this spring is astounding.

In February, we celebrated milestones and completion of grand projects. The new Mason Clinic brings together all of the Mason Health clinics with the exception of the Hoodsport Family Clinic which, you guessed it, will stay in Hoodsport. This means that Primary Care, Walk-In, Orthopedics, Eye, Ankle & Foot, Women’s Health, Pediatrics, Surgery Clinics, and Olympic Physicians will all be housed on the hospital campus. The clinic is adjacent to and connects with the main hospital creating efficiencies and streamlining patient care. The thought and design of the building is impeccable and will serve Mason County for decades to come.

After the recent road construction through Shelton giving us the Downtown Connector Project (which I love to drive now!) and the recent revisions to the southbound on and off ramps at Highway 101, I wish I could tell you that you t o won’t see any major revisions or construction projects this year. I can’t.d Inoa n just a e few short weeks, State Route 3 will move to ongoing lane closures rticasl the Navy’s a s i contractor undertakes seismic updates to the railroad trestle which spans over the f th The most recent o s roadway near Shelton Yacht Club & Oakland Bay Marina. account nt e t n advises that just one lane will be opencduring this project that will last much of the o etraffic h year. the construction already underway and the plan to have kids in the pool by the end of the year is nothing short of a miracle, but believable. It’s not a miracle, it’s due to the vision, hard work, and dedication put forth by a small group of community members who decided that it didn’t matter that it would be difficult, a pipe dream, or near impossible. Kids in the pool by the end of the year. Let that sink in a little.

Spring always signals a time of personal reflection, and as I do so, I am surprised that this year marks a full decade serving as the Chamber’s Executive Director. I believe we (both the Chamber and our community) have accomplished some incredible feats during this time. From attempting Guinness World Records, constructing new school buildings and renovating existing campuses, working with elected officials, and helping community groups, local businesses, and nonprofit organizations succeed, it has been an honor to play such an integral role in my community over the past 10 years. I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together over the next 10 years.

Accomplishment and Momentum both strong in Mason County Marty Crow, Chamber Board President 2020 Executive Director/COO, Habitat for Humanity of Mason County I am very excited about the opportunity to serve as the 2020 Board President of the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce. First, I would like to thank our amazing members, volunteers, professional staff, and our Board of Directors for helping make 2019 a terrific year! We have been blessed with many great accomplishments as a community and have developed a great deal of momentum toward embracing change and growth. With this momentum, new opportunities will continue to develop and become a reality even faster as our community encourages and embraces this culture. I am a firm believer that change will always create new opportunity. One of my mentors early in my career said he would rather “move

A major economic driver of the local community and one of the county’s largest employers, Little Creek Casino Resort has seen many changes over the years. In just the past decade the property has added both a nationally ranked and award-winning golf course as well as a full-service Day Spa offering massage therapy, organic facials and body treatments catapulting. What was formerly a casino and hotel has grown into a full-blown resort property. Now in its 25th year, Little Creek Casino Resort has earned a reputation for continuously improving and developing its properties. Recently, phase one of hotel renovations were completed and—initiated by the logistics involved in that project—the organization opened its own warehouse for distributing goods. This spring, the incredibly popular (with good reason) Squaxin Island Seafood Bar will see an expansion brought forth by popular demand. “We're removing the wall between the Seafood Bar and the Island Grille Restaurant.” says CEO Mike Peters, “There will still be barn doors there, so we can separate the two spaces for special events.” More bar seating and several tables will also be added, creating an opportunity for larger parties who cannot find a seat together at the bar. The rebrand will also see an updated common menu which will serve the Seafood Bar and the Island Grille, making sense as the two already have a shared kitchen. “This project will improve flow as well as make it more efficient and functional,” says Peters. The Seafood Bar will close temporarily on March 23; the plan is to reopen in time for Mother's Day. What's next? The organization is exploring several possibilities: maybe working with Island Enterprises, Inc. on the Cleary property (across SR 109), perhaps a refresh of the buffet, or a third hotel wing. “You could see all of those things,” according to Peters, indicating that we can continue to see great things for Little Creek Casino resort for the next 25 years.

A modern Chamber with STRONG VALUES The Chamber was incorporated in 1922 as the Shelton-Mason County Commercial Club and has served our community faithfully for nearly 100 years. Today, we are the county’s oldest, largest and most influential business association. The club’s original purpose was to engage in educational and social pursuits, develop its members and others, advance the prosperity and growth of the local area, encourage the establishment of industry, foster capital and protect labor, collect and disseminate valuable information. Today, our mission is to encourage and maintain a vibrant business community, promote tourism, and facilitate economic development. The times are changing. But our values remain the same. We believe that a strong business community is key to a healthy economy and that our quality of life in Mason County is driven by the businesses who choose to make this place home.

The Chamber is a CATALYST for business growth. We offer numerous education programs, information that’s relevant to businesses, and abundant networking opportunities. Our association with regional and local industry experts means our members have access to information, tools, and programs that directly benefit our members.

We know that to make an impact and serve our community, we must stay relevant. The Chamber recently launched a new, mobile friendly website: masonchamber. com. On the new site you will find information about programs, contact information for leadership (both board and staff), the online membership directory, community calendar, and more. The rollout of a new website created an opportunity to update the domain to better reflect the entire Chamber membership, instead of only one city. TIMBER HERITAGE have a special opportunity to participate in “Chick’s Kids” a music education program for participants 8 to 18 years old, where the children are divided into small groups based on musical ability and coached by advanced musicians. That program culminates with a special short performance showcasing their newly acquired skills. All events are held at Shelton High School campus and passes may be purchased for a single performance or the entire weekend. Tickets and schedules are available online at bluegrassfromtheforest. com. The kickoff to our tourist season, Mason County Forest Festival is a beautiful showcase that began in 1945 to promote forest fire prevention and celebrate the rich logging history of Mason County. Thanks to the many volunteers of the Mason County Forest Festival Association, it has evolved into the festival we know today. This year's 2020 Forest Festival Royalty Court is comprised of Shelton High School junior and senior students with Queen of the Forest Grace Renecker, Paul Bunyan Kain Tinajero Hernandez, Timber the Axe Man Michael Gilman, Princess of Hemlock Elle Jennings, and Princess of Cedar Kiara Reyna. Ollie Abbe, a Choice High School student, won this year’s button design contest. Buttons are available to purchase at throughout town, including at the Chamber, for $3.00. There are many ways to participate in the Forest Festival festivities. The Forest Festival Carnival starts on Thursday at Gateway Center and runs through Sunday with rides, games, and yummy carnival food vendors.

seen from Shelton Springs Road and Wallace Kneeland Blvd. Rounding out the weekend, on Sunday along Olympic Highway North, is the 30th Annual Shelton Car Showoff. The exhibition features custom, classic, vintage, and special interest cars and hot rods, and of course the sweet and savory treats available from the food vendors!

Pre-sale carnival wristbands will be sold May 20-29 at the Chamber and The Shopper. Saturday kicks off with the Forest Festival Goldsborough Creek Run/Walk event where participants can choose a seven- or two-mile run/walk or a senior walk or junior jog for children. Registration is now open. Don't miss out on the Forest Festival's Firefighter's Pancake Breakfast served by firefighters from Central Mason Fire & EMS.

Rockin’ in the Forest will begin following the logging show and highlight live bands and great local fare. End the night with the Forest Festival fireworks show which can be

You can find out more about both festivals at masonchamber.com/ events or on their sites masoncountyforestfestival.org and bluegrassfromtheforest. com. Commemorative programs will be available nearer the event date, both online and at Cooper Studios and the Chamber.

The Forest Festival Parade begins with a Family & Pet Parade at 9:30 AM, followed by the Forest Festival Paul Bunyan Grand Parade led by 2020 Grand Marshal Darrel Andrews at 11:00 AM. Be sure to look for the Kristmas Town Kiwanis selling rubber ducks for Sunday's Forest Festival Kiwanis Duck Race! Following the parade on Saturday, head down to Loop Field to experience the Forest Festival Western Professional Qualifier Logging Show and witness the annual forestry extravaganza and logging competition presented by STIHL Timbersports. While there, take advantage of the vendor shopping and delicious food and drink options that only a festival can provide. Business Matters - Page 15

Real Estate Update Spring is typically a great time to put a house on the market, even as late as June to avoid disruption with school schedules. Forget what you’ve been told. Now is the time to sell your house as there are far more buyers than houses currently available. “Essentially, everybody is being priced out of where they live, so now they need to find a new place to live. Seattle is moving to Pierce County, they are moving to Thurston, and Thurston is moving here. We don’t have the land to develop on the short term and the market hasn’t quite caught up with the prices,” says Chamber board member and local Realtor Andy Conklin. He goes onto explain that by “catching up,” the current cost to get a lot ready to build is 20% more expensive than it was a

short time ago. That means that the cost to develop and build on those lots exceeds what the market will currently pay, making new construction in Mason County stagnate. To further compound the issue, inventory of available homes on the market has declined over the past few years, creating a market dynamic where there are more buyers than homes available.

willing to pay. As an alternative, sellers may accept offers that are not the highest price, but where there is a higher down payment (in cash). When can we begin to see things level out and have housing demand back

to balanced? At this point there is no end in sight. “There isn’t a solution to this problem yet,” says Andy. “But we’re working on it.” For a list of Chamber member real estate agents, see the directory on pages 27-34.

We had a buyer interested in a 1,200 square foothouse in Oak Park. They were one of many offers, the home was listed at $269,000. It’s now under contract for just under $300K. He reiterated that this is just one of many such stories. When this happens to the market, sometimes houses have trouble appraising for the price buyers are

Colonial House STANDS PROUD 100 YEARS LATER

Built 100 years ago, the Colonial House at 222 W Pine Street is perhaps Shelton’s most iconic structure. The venue offers a glimpse into a bygone era, hallmarked by glamour and decadence. The Colonial House was built in 1920 for Irene Simpson—daughter of Sol Simpson the founder of Simpson Logging—and her husband Mark Reed, who served as mayor of Shelton and took over Simpson’s interests in 1914. The house was designed thoughtfully with careful consideration given to how it would be used by the family, symbolize the prosperity of the timber industry, and stand at the heart of the community. The 6,000 sq. ft. historic home was designed by local architect Joseph Wohleb, who is also known for his role as architect to the state’s capitol. The Colonial House features luxury finishes, like Douglas fir paneling and imported Sweet Gum wainscoting. Throughout the home are exotic trappings that nod to the Reeds

global travels and personal touches like the Peacock motif that Irene so loved. The home boasts eight original bedrooms and six original baths along with an expansive billiards room on the second floor. The main floor also holds a sizeable kitchen, formal dining room, and two offices flanking the grand foyer. The manor-like home served dual purpose as a family residence and a center for business and community activities. “I think it is telling that both Mark and Irene had offices with doors to the outside, and they both held office hours,” explains Patti Case, Public/Regulatory Affairs Manager with Green Diamond Resource Company. “Irene was involved in a lot of civic affairs; she was on the school board for many years while Mark was managing the family company. The Reeds kept their voting address in Shelton even after they moved to Seattle.” Sadly, the Reeds only occupied the home for ten years. In 1930 their adult son Sol was murdered at the hands of a disgruntled

employee. The Reeds then moved to Seattle along with Simpson’s headquarters. After years unoccupied, being used as a boarding house, private home, and office building, the Colonial House is now stewarded by Green Diamond Resource Company as it plays host to their visiting contractors, executives, and interns. The home is also available to rent for private events. In 2013, Green Diamond expanded the property. Where a dilapidated house stood at the northwest corner of near Alder & Third Streets is now a picturesque setting with sprawling lawn, stone-lined floral gardens, and two charming bridges that span the Shelton Creek. 1920s-style street lighting and railed fencing complete the transformation and tie into the architectural details of the existing estate. For more information on Shelton’s historical Colonial House, to arrange a tour, or schedule an event, please contact Natalie Marshall at natalie.marshall@greendiamond.com.

Gala honors 2019’s best The best of Mason County turned out for the community’s largest business affair on Friday, January 17. The evening celebrated the Chamber’s 97th year with nearly 400 of Mason County's finest business owners, professionals, elected officials, and nonprofits. The crowd gathered to celebrate and give tribute to the successes of 2019. Upon entering the venue, guests were met by DECA student volunteers and provided a warm welcome by Hospitality Sponsor The Roof Doctor. The Gala opened with a social hour courtesy of Reception Sponsor Beko’s Tree Service and Champagne Sponsor Our Community Credit Union. Then, inside the dramatically draped and lighted room, Melanie Bakala of State Farm Insurance hopped on the mic and laid down 2019’s accomplishments to the tune of “Busta Move” by Young MC. The reimagined version touted “Shelton Rules!” Chamber director Heidi McCutcheon commenced the program with introductions of those who made the

evening possible, including Premier Sponsor, Little Creek Casino Resort's CEO Michael Peters, Photo Sponsor Cooper Studios, Jim Boad of Flippin’ Awesome Renovations, Briana Slater of The Roof Doctor, and Nolberto Chavez of Beko’s Trees & Wood Carving. A spectacular four course meal served showcased the expertise of the culinary staff and, thanks to course sponsors The Optical Shop of WA, Edward Jones - Karen Schade, Financial Advisor, and Heritage Bank. Retired Judge Victoria Meadows invited the 2020 Chamber Board of Trustees to the stage for the formal installation. Outgoing President of the Board Lisa Perry thanked Past President Will Johnson for his years of service on the board, as well as retiring board members Justin Baze of Black Star & The Varmints and Ray Frederick of Garage Sale Maniacs. During her State of the Chamber address, McCutcheon highlighted five of the

organization’s successes from 2019: partnering to convene the Workforce Housing Summit; focusing on government advocacy at state and local levels; actively leading workforce development efforts; rebranding and launching a new Chamber website; and bringing together partners to revive Christmastown, USA. The awards program honored all of the 2019 nominees and announced the winners: President’s Choice Jim Morrell of Peninsula Credit Union, Volunteer of the Year Hazel Bartley, Community Supporter of the Year Habitat for Humanity of Mason County, Citizen of the Year Rachel Hansen of Northwest Event Organizers, Boss of the Year Stephanie Steen of Our Community Credit Union, Rookie of the Year Paulie’s Place, and Business of the Year Steph’s Espresso. The entire evening was a brilliant celebration! The Chamber is proud to provide accolades to the many amazing individuals and businesses that support the Mason County community. It is evident, given the outpouring of support by attendees, that the community shares in the Chamber’s appreciation and enthusiasm. 2019 featured incredible accomplishments and highlighted strong efforts to move forward together and the community continues to grow in its spirit of volunteerism, selflessness, and dedication. Chamber celebrates 20th Expo and Bite with expanded street fair On Friday, July 19, Railroad Avenue will once again play stage to a day-long street fair highlighting the best of Mason County. The largest business & restaurant event in Mason County, the Expo is attended by thousands of community members each year. It has the feeling of a high energy

block party with businesses and community organizations drawing on showmanship and flair to get your attention while sharing what makes their business so dynamic. Best known for its interactive activities, affordable food bites from local restaurants and caterers, and its showcase of retailers, the Expo also features professional services, non-profits, and community organizations. This year marks the 20 th annual iteration of this event and the Chamber plans to expand the footprint to include more vendor space. Registration is now open online at masonchamber. com/expo. Pricing begins at $100 (waived at some levels of membership) and sponsorship opportunities are available. Melanie Bakala of State Farm Insurance shared, “I have participated in a lot of events like this in other communities, and our Chamber’s Expo is a unique blend

Page 34- Business Matters

of business and community that provides unparalleled exposure.” Cedar Bodyworks & Massage’s Brenda Windom said, “I saw a few families with kids having a fun family day. Couples, wheelchairs, old and young; this was a nice, affordable day out for lots of people. Good job Chamber! The event brought a lot of folks downtown and let them know about goods and services available that they otherwise would never know existed.” As always, this event offers

residents a chance to check out local services, retailers, and restaurants in a fun, casual atmosphere.
