Programs flourish across Mason County’s schools It’s a good time to be in school in Mason County. For many, the Shelton School District Construction Bond that is nearing completion may be the most noticeable example. $65M going into seven schools, some of which were in dire need of renovation, is an amazing accomplishment for our community. But when I say it’s a good time to be in school in Mason County, that is just one example. There is so much more. Hood Canal School District has some incredible programs and exceptional staff. Newly appointed Superintendent Nikki Cannon has leaped into the community with both feet. From attending local events to meeting people one on one, she has already made an impact and will continue to do so throughout her tenure. The district has also just been awarded Washington State Parks and Recreation funds as part of the No Child Left Inside grant. The grant will fund outdoor education and recreation to underserved youth and the district will use the money to fund experiential and adventure-based education as well as the Riparian Enhancement Programs offered to middle school students in the 2019-2020 school year. Olympic College recently announced that it is recruiting for a full-time Construction Trades Director to lead the planning, development, and launch of a new Construction Trades Program for Olympic College in Kitsap and Mason Counties. The initial work location will be in Shelton at the Olympic College Shelton campus. Hard hat-clad workers are declining for a multitude of reasons, including a decreased value being placed on trades, the aging baby boomer population, and the ensuring skills gap. In a community such as Mason County, where less than 18% of residents have a college degree, the construction trades can provide a viable, well-paying salary for newcomers to the workforce without having earned a fouryear degree. This program will be offered in addition to the two-year associate degree for the welding program, another non-traditional educational course the college offers. Shelton School District has taken great strides in the past few years. In concert with Mason General Hospital, Shelton High School rolled out its Health Sciences Academy over the past school year with great success – enrolling more than 300 students in its inaugural year. General participate in this? The simple answer is workforce development. There is a significant and growing shortage of health care workers which makes recruiting and retaining employees difficult. By improving the quality of education and developing future healthcare professionals, they are actively creating their workforce and a healthier community. As Shelton School District continues the trend toward academies, partnering with organizations such as Bates Technical College for their expertise in trades and manufacturing, they are considering additional academies that are in demand locally and statewide. The rollout of these will help build an environment where students are not only more engaged and have increased graduation rates, they will also possess valuable experience upon graduation. Recognizing the incredible need for workforce development and its impact on our community, the Chamber will take an active role in facilitating job shadowing, internships, in-class expert speakers, and guiding curriculum through participation in steering committees. Our businesses are eager to get their hands on the kids and help them begin learning skills that are conneted and to form strong work habits. Is it just me or does everyone feel like this summer is going far too quickly? It is unimaginable to me that we are discussing back to school issues but here we are. Some wonder why a business organization such as the Chamber would focus on schools. The easy answer is that our future employees and customers are being educated as we speak. How those schools view business and how they interact, especially with local businesses, will determine our future. As a former educator, I’ve been on both sides of the equation. What everyone realizes very quickly is that academia and business tend to speak different languages and almost operate on different planes. Most educators and administrators have spent their professional lives learning and honing their craft in schools, while business people — many of whom went to school or a training program — honed their craft outside that world.
I had the wonderful fortune to travel with Shelton High School teachers and administrators to Nashville to see the academy model of schools that we are currently trying to emulate here locally. By traveling together and spending every evening sharing what we had all learned in different sessions, it was clear that our goals are very similar. We all want students to have access to high quality education that prepares them for a successful life. Students need to be ready for college or other training programs, career, the military, or wherever their passion leads them. As a local employer, I want them to also realize that whether they stay in the area or leave for their next step, there are wonderful career opportunities back here if they choose to return. They can’t know that if they haven’t seen them! The Chamber will play a very important role in this process. We are committed to facilitating the communication between schools and employers, ensuring that
programs are preparing students for real-life, up-to-date careers. Schools will be reaching out to the community for job shadows, classroom presentations, tours, and other ideas to engage students in local businesses. The Chamber will continue to explore the opportunities. That said, don’t wait to be contacted; reach out to your school today if you have ideas. Get more involved in the Chamber and let us know that you’re interested in working on this project. Let’s help our youth find their passion and maybe even find it right here in our beautiful community!

OysterFest highlights local aquaculture, supports community efforts For locals OysterFest is a tradition. For visitors it’s a chance to indulge in the seafood dishes for which the Pacific Northwest is best known. On the first full weekend in October, Skookum Rotary will stage its 38th annual OysterFest, home of the West Coast Oyster Shucking Championships. It is also Washington State’s official seafood festival. On Friday evening, the three-year tradition of OysterFunk by Shelton Rotary Club takes place in the 21+ beer garden, catering to locals and OysterFest RVers alike. Saturday and Sunday hosts family-friendly opportunities all day with water quality exhibits, free entertainment, and live music throughout the weekend. For those looking for adult activities, dozens of Washington State Wineries and Pacific Northwest Microbreweries certainly know how to do their thing. Combine this with the food vendors offering unique delicacies and this a festival to which you’ll want to arrive to both hungry & thirsty! One cool thing about OysterFest that you may not know is that Skookum Rotary allows only nonprofit organizations serving Mason County to be a food vendor at OysterFest. By making this requirement, Skookum Rotary ensures that it is a fundraising event for other organizations as well. What a way to pay it forward! OysterFest is located on Sanderson Field, 1/2 mile north of Shelton, west of US Highway

101. Locals know that the best way to get to OysterFest is through the free (and continuous!) shuttle service. Free parking areas and pick-up points are located throughout town; follow signage for the shuttle spot closest to you. The cost of admission to OysterFest is $7.00 and children under 7 are free. There is no charge to park your car and no charge to ride the shuttle bus. Except for service dogs, animals are not permitted on the OysterFest grounds. Maps, tickets, camping reservations, entertainment schedules, and more are available at oysterfest.org.

In 1976, the Washington State Legislature directed the Washington Association of Sheriffs & Police Chiefs (WASPC) to develop a set of operational standards and industry goals for Washington State law enforcement officials. In response, WASPC established a rigorous accreditation program for law enforcement agencies to become certified in industry best practices and standards. The accreditation process occurs in eight phases: Interest and Contract; File Maintenance; Self-Assessment; On-Site Assessment and Evaluation; Accreditation Commission Review; Executive Board Review; Award; and Re-Accreditation. Expo & Bite draws thousands to downtown, showcases county’s best On the third Friday of July, the Chamber’s Expo & Bite of Mason County once again transformed downtown with its street fair along Railroad Avenue. Thousands of residents and visitors turned out for the one-day event.
As always, the event offered residents and visitors a chance to check out local services, retailers, and restaurants in a fun, casual atmosphere. Vendors entertained and interacted by hosting games, offering giveaways, and drawing free raffles throughout the day; the restaurants prepared delectable bites of food for a great value.
From nearly 100 booth spaces and almost a dozen food vendors, the Chamber asked the community to vote for their favorites. Competition was intense and it was a tight race to take home the People’s Choice Awards. 2019 Best Booth went to Hood Canal Communications who celebrated 85 years in business with an 80’s themed booth featuring totally tubular tech throwbacks, photo fun, rad prizes, and lots of fun!
Tempting Eats and Treats received the Golden Fork award as they delighted the crowds with delicious finger steaks, gouda grillers, caprese crostini, raspberry swirl cheesecake, Irish cream brownies, and slush puppies.

Oakland Bay Marina has grand plans to revitalize the Shelton waterfront. Already, they’ve expanded access to the once-private clubhouse by allowing rental of the facility. With its stunning views and convenient location, the fully furnished hall and its commercial kitchen are an ideal venue for parties and meetings alike. A slew of new events and celebrations, like the recent Opening Day of Boating and Dock Party, are just examples of the types of activities which are being designed to engage the local community. Long term goals include improved parking, landscaping, and lighting design, along with partnerships to increase access to city restaurants, shopping, and more. Looking down Alder Street from the City of Shelton’s first traffic circle, dignitaries, staff, contractors, and residents celebrated the much-anticipated completion of the Downtown Connector Project. The $4.3 million revitalization project features new asphalt streets, sidewalks, streetscapes, street and pedestrian lighting, ADA ramps, stormwater upgrades, and intersection improvements.

At the studio, students will experience a full range of musical training through all
aspects of musical theory as well as rhythm, ear training, sight reading, repertoire, and composition. Chamber seeks nominations for awards
Nominations for the Chamber’s awards are open now and will be accepted through September 13, 2019. For decades the Chamber has recognized deserving businesses, individuals, and organizations through its annual awards program.
Who do you believe are most deserving of recognition? The entire community is welcome to make a nomination for those who work hard to make Mason County a better place. Submittals can be made to the Chamber at info@sheltonchamber.org or sheltonchamber.org/awards. All nominations will be reviewed by the Chamber’s Member Services Committee, who will forward a slate of at least three nominees per category to the Chamber Board of Trustees for consideration to be placed on the ballot. As always, ballots will be mailed to all members in good standing; each Chamber member receives one vote per category. The majority vote by the membership determines the award winners. The winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Gala held at Little Creek Casino Resort’s Skookum Event Center on Friday, January 17, 2020. Business of the Year recognizes the company that made the most significant contribution benefiting the
Mason County business community. Any size business is eligible; recognition will be given to overall contributions improving our community and/ or business climate. This business must be a member in good standing of the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce and should be headquartered in Mason County.

Citizen of the Year recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to enhance the business community and the community at large. This person gives freely of their time, talent, energy and expertise. This person must either live or work in Mason County. Who can be nominated? Any individual, whether affiliated with a business or retired. 2018 Citizen of the Year was awarded to Tom Beben. Rookie of the Year celebrates a business who has opened a storefront or began operation within the past 24 months. The recipient should fulfill a gap in services, retail, or operations and benefit the Mason County community at large. This business should be headquartered in Mason County and must be a member in good standing.

Boss of the Year recognizes an individual who empowers employees, is an example of leadership and management excellence, and maintains excellent employer-employee relations. Supervisors, managers, or owners that you work for. 2018 Boss of the Year was awarded to Kevin & Kathy Dorcy. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR recognizes an individual who has largely contributed to the Chamber’s programs and activities. This is someone who has given their time, talent, energy and expertise in an effort to enhance the business community and the community at large. This person must serve on one or more Chamber committees. In 2019, Chamber staff will select the recipient based upon participation, volunteerism, and overall contribution to the Chamber and its programs. 2018 Volunteer of the Year was awarded to the late Teresa Gilman.
PRESIDENT’S CHOICE recognizes contributions to the Chamber or to the community and is selected annually by the President of the Chamber Board of Trustees. 2018 President’s Choice went to Ray Frederick by then-President Will Johnson. COMMUNITY SUPPORTER OF THE YEAR recognizes a nonprofit organization who strongly impacts Mason County through service, volunteerism, donations (monetarily and/or in-kind), and activism. Chamber invests in community leaders Rural Development Initiative (RDI) offers a unique training to foster community leadership. RDI is based on the belief that vital rural communities develop from a broad base of knowledgeable, skilled, and motivated leaders. The leadership training consists of sessions that focus on developing the community leadership capacity of individuals. In 2018, the Chamber’s Board of Trustees elected to contribute funds to support a new RDI in Mason County, acknowledging that the projects are integral to moving the community forward. The Chamber matched those dollars, doubling the impact. This three-year initiative provides training to community leaders. “Our community is blessed with volunteer

a stamp on their game map or the chance to draw for a coin. The more stamps and gold coins received increases the likelihood of unlocking treasure boxes filled with gift certificates, prizes, and giveaways at Green Diamond’s Mason Lake Recreation Area— the final treasure stop.

It’s the doggone right thing to do Our Community Credit Union invests in K9 programs Just over a decade ago, Our Community Credit Union’s CEO Bert Fisher read an article in the Journal about the possibility of a K9 program at the Mason County Sheriff Office. “I called the sheriff up and told him we’d buy his dog for him,” he recalls. A self-proclaimed animal lover, Bert believes the K9 program impacts the community in a way that ties into the credit union’s mission. “We have an obligation to the community when it comes to safety; it can be in the form of fraud monitoring or credit education. In this case it was a dog.” Often times, police departments are undermanned which brings specific chal-
lenges. To combat this sometimes thankless profession, K9s can help an officer be more effective. Statistics show that a dog can search an area four times faster than a human being can – and with a much higher accuracy and a nose for detail. In rural areas, the addition of a K9 to the force can be a game changer. A K9 typically will have a 6-8 year career that doesn’t involve HR, increased wages, or employment taxes. They always show up for work and they are effective. If you’re a bad guy trying to run from the cops, having a dog after you is your worst nightmare. You aren’t going to get away, and you’re probably going to the hospital before you go to jail.
The K9 program was also attractive for other reasons. OCCU likes to take ownership of a program; when it comes to paying for the dogs, donating a vehicle, or providing supplies for the program there are direct results. To date, Our Community Credit Union has worked with Mason County Sheriff Office, Shelton Police Department, McCleary Police Department, Aberdeen Police Department and Grays Harbor Sheriff Office. This year, OCCU has supplied one dog to Shelton Police Department; another will likely follow before the year’s end.

Be a tourist in your own town By Rachel Hansen Explore Hood Canal At the Chamber’s Expo it was remarkable how many people stopped at the Explore Hood Canal booth to ask questions. “Where can I hike? What type of pass do I need? Where can we go see waterfalls with our kids? What are the best fishing lakes?” In fact, of all the events I have attended in the last six months, out of the state and even out of country, more area maps and Fjord magazines were handed out during those six short hours here locally. We don’t need to head to the big cities to be entertained. The best year-round playground is definitely in our backyard and our neighbors are really starting to appreciate it. Chasing waterfalls There’s nothing quite like chasing waterfalls after a good rainfall. Page 20 - BUSINESS MATTERS
Hamma Hamma River has three specimens of watery joy easily seen from the road, but the crowning glory is simply known as Hamma Hamma Falls. In the autumn, when the water is racing down its twotiered falls dropping a stunning fifty and twenty feet at a 90-degree angle, daredevil river paddling enthusiasts cart their kayaks to the top and ride the falls down. Located within the Mount Skokomish Wilderness, the falls are fed by Mount Washington, Skokomish, and Cruiser watersheds. As there are no glacier ice packs feeding the falls, water level fluctuations are noticeble as the drier summer months progress. To reach the falls, turn west off of US Highway 101 N between Brinnon and Hoodsport onto Hamma Hamma Road (also known as Forest Road 25). Travel for 6.4 miles past Hamma Hamma Campground and the Cabin Creek Road. When you come to the “T” intersection, turn right and follow signs to Lena Creek for around 7 miles (still continuing on FR 25) where you will come to a concrete bridge that crosses the Hamma Hamma River. Below the bridge you will find a breathtaking top view of the falls. The access trail is located before the concrete bridge just off of the pullout. Take care
along the steep, narrow access trail as the damp conditions can make the trail treacherous. On your return, stop in at the Hama Hama Oyster Saloon (located on Hwy 101) and partake in local seafood. Pedal the historic timber rails in the Olympic Forest We’ve always been taught to never play on the tracks but there is one place in Mason County where it is perfectly okay and even encouraged! The whole family will love Vance Creek Railriders’ two-hour experience as pedal powered cars equipped like recumbent bicycles meander the curves following Green Diamond’s decommissioned timber railway. Fall is the best time for fresh seafood
in South Puget Around and Hood Canal. All you need is a license, boots, bucket, and a sense of adventure. Many of our state parks and DNR beaches are open for public harvesting; Twanoh, Potlatch, Lilliwaup and Grapeview are popular beaches on the South Sound. If you prefer to have the harvesting done for you, pick up fresh mussels, oysters, and clams at Taylor Shellfish and Hama Hama’s retail stores. Birdwatching in our estuaries With a majestic and varied landscape as a background for your birding endeavors, this is a gorgeous place to search for the over 250 species that call the Olympic Peninsula home. Many of the parks, including the 182-acre Twanoh State Park or the 135-acre Theler Wetlands offer a network of unpopulated trails where you can commune with the avian community. The first began earlier in the month as she commissioned a local artist to paint her exterior wall with a big slice of cherry pie. “I want to make use of the alley: clean it up, offer some outdoor seating, and make it look nice.” The second is something she’s been contemplating for some time. “Farm to plate! I want to shut down the street on a weekend evening and do dinner tables down the center.” She goes on to talk about the local Mason County bounty,
celebrating local produce, and considers how she’ll put together a menu in advance of the event. “It’s just hard to be sure what will be available in a large quantity when we begin to sell tickets,” she says. “But I’m going to do it. It’ll give us a chance to pause. And eat!” And if it’s like anything else that she’s put her mind to, the event will become an experience that everyone wants to attend. Chamber connects businesses, builds relationships On June 12, Hood Canal Communications cleared out the equipment bay and opened the doors to its birthday celebration. With HCC flair on full display and lots of special touches— including local eats and classic cars—HCC celebrated 85 years together with members of the Shelton-Mason and North Mason Chambers. Nolberto Chavez, owner/operator of Beko’s Trees & Wood Carving, invited members to a patio party nearby his operations center on July 10. The brightly adorned deck featured company colors and a spread of fresh, summer food for guests to enjoy. The evening culminated with a raffle for numerous hand-carved novelties, from bears to trees, which guests vied to take home.

Chamber beautification project grows Since the flower baskets that proudly adorn our byways were hung in May, the Chamber has asked its members and the community at large to contribute to the beautification program. This year, that ask was reinforced by a plea to assist in raising additional funds for new Christmas decorations.
The festive Christmas décor is now 65 years old and, while lovingly maintained, has surpassed the life expectancy by decades. There will be a significant expense to replace all of the decorations and will likely be phased in, area-by-area. The Chamber is relying on the community’s sense of pride and its Christmas spirit to help fundraise for the nearly $60,000 The Chamber is grateful to those expected to fully light up Christmas who have already contributed; more Town, USA during the winter months, than $14,000 has been raised.
