Tidying Up Communication & Workforce Development 2019 Board of Trustees

With the spring comes change, freshness, and a clean slate. While we look forward to longer days and landscape without the now tired snow, it truly is a good time to renew! As you read the following pages, you’ll see many articles written by our Chamber members who are experts in their industries. From spring cleaning your carpets, yards, and even your thoughts there are many tips and tricks in the pages to follow. In the theme of changes and planning, the Chamber Board met in early January to map out our priorities and marching orders. Topping the list includes refreshing and sprucing up our communications. At least once a week I hear, “You know – the Chamber should really…” followed by anything from cleaning graffiti, paying for infrastructure development, opening a bowling alley, and other various bullet points from the community’s wish list. While I agree that each of these would be wonderful to have, as a staff five people we focus on projects and efforts which will have a tremendous impact and supports our mission. As we take stock of what the Chamber has done and what we can do, the opportunity arises to very clearly communicate what our priorities are. I believe you’ll see newly formed communication, website, and social media platforms before the year is done to concisely convey our work to connect, convene, and champion within our community. As workforce development is paramount to our business community, the Chamber also looks to work closely with our local schools, particularly at the high school level. I just returned from an in-depth study of the Academies of Nashville with Shelton School District. A decade ago, Nashville had a 57.8% graduation rate and attendance rates of less than 60%. They were nearly taken over by the state when they implanted their academies. They now boast 80% graduation rate or higher and solid attendance within the 90% range. These academies interest and engage youth like nothing I’ve ever seen. You may know that SHS has recently implemented a health sciences academy in

concert with Mason General. Already 300 students have enrolled or taken an exploratory course. There is already strong consideration for a trade’s academy that would partner with Sierra Pacific Industries, Green Diamond Resource Company, and other manufacturing companies. We now have a good map to navigate the academies successfully. I can’t wait to tell you all more about this. As we move into 2019, the Chamber will continue to champion our community by interviewing with community investors, developing our future workforce, and following legislation that has the potential to harm our employers and employees. Should you have any questions about what we are doing or just want to share your thoughts – stop by our office or give us a call. We are always willing to engage in the conversation of how we can make our community better.

Lisa Perry 2019 Chamber Board President Sierra Pacific Industries

For those of you that don’t know me, I’m the Community Relations Manager for Sierra Pacific Industries. I keep finding myself telling people we’re the “new mill” on the waterfront, even though we’ve been in the community for over three years and running for two. I guess when the previous tenant was there for over 100 years, we can still be considered new. The theme of this issue of Business Matters is “Spring Cleaning.” In addition to traditional cleaning, I thought this would be a good time for us all to de-clutter our thoughts about the area we live in, of the negativity and pessimism that seems to sneak into the conversation; especially when we talk about economic development. Let’s talk about some of the good things happening. First, a little self-promotion: the “new mill” is up and running and our crew just increased to more than 280 people on site. We are running about 85% of our total capacity and expect this to be an exceptional year in Shelton. This and other new businesses

The Hardware Distillery will launch a barrel of aged Dill Aquavit which will cross Hood Canal (a fjord) from the Port of Hoodsport to Tahuya and back.

To celebrate the launch, Paddle the Canal will follow the Twanoh in canoes, kayaks, SUPs, and small sailboats. It is open to everyone, and is not a race, but there will be prizes and special competitions. The cost of the Paddle is $29 per person. Pre-register for Paddle the Canal at www.hoodcanalevents.com

Next, our schools are improving by leaps and bounds every day. The community passed a $65M bond on the first try! The funded projects will improve the learning experience and allow teachers to do what they do best, which is to enrich student’s lives. The Health Sciences Academy has already begun and several new academies are in the works. These allow students to apply academics forming pathways to real-life careers. We at the Chamber are proud to support all of our local school districts. We are getting a YMCA! The capital campaign is in full swing and we’ve received terrific support from the business community, regional foundations, governmental agencies and individuals. Being personally involved in this campaign has been so uplifting – I wish you could all

be in the meetings. Though we’ve had great success, the last $2M is the most difficult. If you haven’t already pledged to the campaign now is the time the contact the YMCA office downtown and sign up. We can and will make this happen. I could go on and on about all of the wonderful things going on, new city manager, new council with fresh ideas, lots of infrastructure projects happening and more. Maybe as someone newer to the community I don’t focus on some of the past disappointments, but I ask that you join me in Spring Cleaning those less positive thoughts and jump into one of these new projects to help get it off the ground. I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish.

City Construction Projects Near Completion A Fair Trade for Minor Inconvenience It’s been some time since Shelton has seen major road construction, but there has been an abundance over the past year. At times (sometimes at the same time), parts of Railroad Ave, Olympic Hwy N, and Northcliff have all had work done. You’ll be happy to know that the end is in sight. Basin 3, the project from the top Northcliff Road to Pine Street and from 1st through 7th Streets, began as a project to replace the failing sewer system which had deteriorated beyond repair. However, City of Shelton staff quickly saw an opportunity for more as they recognized significant funding available for projects that enhanced traffic flow and improved safety conditions. Thus, began the Downtown Connector Project. That’s the name of the construction on Olympic Hwy N from C Street all the way down to Front Street.

than a year ago, and as it’s been so long since any major updates were done, that’s not so bad. Less than 16 months from start to finish. Together, the projects have a price tag of more than $10M. So just how much have the citizens of Shelton paid for all of it? Not a dime. More than $5M came from direct state appropriation (we can thank Senator Sheldon, Representative MacEwen and Representative Griffey for that) with the remainder coming from other state entities and neighboring partners including Mason PUD#3 and MTA. You may be even more impressed to know that at this time, the projects are coming in at $1.2M under budget. If that trends continues, additional amenities will be added into the original scope without extending the timeline.

For now, as you’re driving on autopilot for two When both projects are complete, everything minutes in the wrong direction before you realize within the 50 linear block area will be new. From you need to go around the other way and before asphalt and parking areas, to illumination, islands, you begin to complain about the inconvenience of and barriers, it will look completely different. All it all, keep in mind just two things. First, the end is of the old infrastructure will have been ripped up, in sight and under budget. Second, and perhaps revamped, and redone - which hasn’t happened most importantly, we didn’t have to pay directly since the original projects were completed. Both for any of it. 16 months for $10M is a fair trade. projects are expected to be completed in early July. Considering that construction began less We got the better half of that deal.

Shelton Gets Another Taste of Bluegrass Nirvana What started as a small town event hosted by Kristmas Town Kiwanis has grown into a must-see music weekend festival, drawing internationally renowned talent. In its 15th year, Bluegrass from the Forest will again be held at the Shelton High School Campus on May 17-19.

Bluegrass families and fans turn out in droves for the festival’s workshops and live bands. As if the music isn’t enough, the festival includes on-site camping for an unforgettable experience. Grab your guitar, pack up your tent, and make a weekend out of it. As is custom at bluegrass festivals, Saturday morning will include a Band Scramble. Names will be drawn to form a random band to include a bass, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and singer. The newly formed bands have 40 minutes to come up with a tune to perform on stage. It’s a great way to make some new friends, perform on stage, and possibly form the next big bluegrass band! While adults scramble, music-loving kids can participate in the Chick Rose Youth School of Bluegrass. Founded by the late Chick Rose, this program teaches kids of all ages and experience levels. Children are divided into small groups based on musical ability and coached by advanced musicians. It culminates with a special short performance showcasing their newly acquired skills. No, you won’t need a bib and fork for the Mandolin Tasting. This oddly named event provides mandolin players the opportunity ‘taste’ some very nice mandolins with the instruction of musician Alan Bibey of Grasstowne. Not into mandolins? No worries! There are more workshops for guitars, fiddles, and like-stringed instruments. This is a great (and fun!) opportunity to improve your music playing abilities in a nonjudgmental setting. As is tradition, hotdogs will be served at midnight on Saturday to help fuel the music of the night. This year’s main stage lineup boasts Special Consensus, Alan Bibey and Grasstowne, The Slocan Ramblers, North Country, Me and The Boys, The Warren G. Hardings, and festival staple Runaway Train Bluegrass Band. You can take in a single performance or buy an event pass to jam out the entire weekend. Bring the kids along too; they get free or discounted pricing.

What’s Happening at the Capitol?

Legislation Stopped to Restrict Workers’ Flexibility The Washington State Legislature considered House Bill 1491 in early February which had the potential to greatly impact business owners and their employees. The week before the hearing the Shelton-Mason County Chamber notified members, calling on them to testify at the hearing or to submit testimony online to be considered. The Chamber also notified other chambers of commerce of the potential impacts. While the Chamber believes the intent was to include only retail and restaurant industries, the vague verbiage in the bill could easily have it apply to all

Washington State businesses. Below are some of the most concerning points that this bill raised. The bill would interfere with employees who desire part time work or prefer to work flexible schedules. It would reduce the hours available for workers due to the risk of triggering penalty compensation. Already, retailers are reducing or eliminating positions wanted by students and others who desire flexible, part time work schedules. While businesses cannot always predict scheduling fluctuations due to weather, events, festivals, large groups, etc., changes in

schedules or failure to provide at minimum 14 day notice would trigger expensive penalties and compensation. These requirements would also restrict the ability to provide after hours or on-call services such as road repair, home delivery, and immediate service needs. Employees would no longer have the ability to trade shifts or accommodate fellow workers’ wish to trade without the risk of triggering penalties for their employer. Employees would need to know if they would want to change shifts at least 21 days in advance, which is impractical for working families. Voluntary “stand-by” lists would not be

honored and would actually be penalized if used by employers and employees. We believe that the outcry by businesses and their employees was heard in the House of Representatives. This bill was not introduced to the Senate and will not be considered in the 2019 Legislative Session. The Chamber will continue to watch dog bills and notify our business community when legislation arises that will impact their ability to function. Go to https://apps.leg.wa.gov/ billinfo/ to see all bills that have been introduced and track the progress.

The Many Benefits of Mulching Ashley Brady Brady Trucking Co. & Landscape Supply

Brady Trucking Co. & Landscape Supply can answer all of your mulching questions.

Spring is the perfect time to mulch as you prepare for warmer days ahead, yet the soil is still moist. Simply put, mulch is any material you can use to put around your garden to benefit either the soil or plant itself. During the warmer months it is a struggle to keep the soil at optimum moisture and temperature levels. Choosing plant-based mulch such as beauty bark or organic compost will prevent direct contact of the sun’s rays and reduce the amount of water loss by up to 75%. A layer of mulch also prevents the soil from becoming compacted from foot traffic or heavy precipitation. If your soil becomes compact, water is more likely to run off rather than soak in. Below are some popular types of mulch and their properties. Certified Organic Compost – Finely ground decomposed plant matter that helps retain soil moisture and utilize nutrients.

Evergreen Mulch – Finely ground evergreen clippings, perfect for those acid loving plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas, and blueberries. Beauty Bark – Many different varieties and textures to choose from. Aggregate/Drain Rock – Allows rain to easily penetrate while reducing water

Extend the Life of Your Carpet Robert Bertolani | Owner & Operator of Robert E’s Carpet Cleaning

using the 50/50 method or use a chemical solution then quickly vacuum the carpet with the machine. By doing this, you will rinse out the product and leave no residue.

With spring fast approaching here are a few ways to best care for your carpets in between professional cleanings. I put this advice to use on my own carpets that sustain a heavy amount of foot traffic; after 26 years they still look great! n Take off your shoes upon entering your home. This may be difficult and challenging at times but it is incredibly effective. I’ve seen carpets that are 15 years old still in great condition due to a “No Shoes Policy.” n Do not use chemicals for spot cleaning carpets. Often the chemicals in store bought cleaners are very difficult to get out, leave a residue that attracts dirt, and result in a permanent

stain. Instead, use 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Then spray this solution on the area and lightly wipe up with a clean damp white towel. If you have a spill (or a pet accident) on the carpet, get up as much moisture as possible. Use the 50/50 mixture when dry, if need be.

n Vacuum your carpets on a regular basis. Not only does this make them look better, but dirt and debris will break down the fibers in a carpet or rug if not maintained properly. n If you have a Bissel, do not fill it with cleaning solutions, just use hot water. Spot clean

With more than two decades cleaning floors professionally, people always ask me how often their carpets should receive a good cleaning. The short answer is that it is different for everybody. For the average family with a good amount of traffic, I would recommend an annual cleaning. For a small household with little traffic and proper care, you can go several years without a professional cleaning and still maintain a well-kept carpet. To get a professional opinion and a quote, give me a call at (360) 427-6744 or check us out at www.RobertEs.net.

Business Lessons from a Mouse with Big Ears As the Chamber staff recently returned from Western Association of Chamber Executives Annual Conference, which was held this year at the Disneyland Hotel, it seems the perfect time to share these “magical” lessons: 1. Focus on the right stuff and the money will come – The top three priorities of Disneyland management is leadership excellence, cast excellence and guest satisfaction. The fourth priority is financial results. The interpretation is that if you do the first three things right, money is a natural outcome.

of trash that each guest produces per day is recycled.

lucky, you can see all the combinations in three rides— or, much more likely, you’ll have to keep coming back for more.

9. Keep customers coming back – The Star Wars inspired ride called Star Tours has six different destinations, two Adapted from the article What I Learned From A Mouse beginning scenes and three holograms. This means WavesOfPerfection_Ad - Shelton_CC_vFINAL.pdf 1 3/5/19 AM With1:57 Big Ears, Guy Kawasaki Co-Founder, Alltop that there are 54 different combinations. If you’re very

2. Take care of your employees (cast members) – Disneyland has “team centers” to serve the needs of its employees. These centers provide insurance, discounts, tickets, transportation services and payroll services. The message is “be good to your employees, and they’ll be good to your customers.” 3. Everybody should do the “dirty jobs” – How many people are there in the park sweeping up trash? Take a guess. The right answer is an astoundingly low number: eight. This is possible because every employee is supposed to keep the park clean, not just the janitors. 4. Everybody is customer service – How long do you think the training is for the people with brooms sweeping up the trash? Six weeks. This is necessary because guests ask janitors questions, so the folks with brooms must be experts about the park. The training for parking lot attendants can be as long as eight weeks. C

5. Pay attention to the details – Walt Disney himself specified the type of trash can for the park. These cans are currently swapped out every two years and Disney repaints them every four months. Y

6. Pay attention to even more details – A hairdresser in the wig department takes 30-45 minutes to wash and set the wig for Ariel. Then it takes 90-120 minutes to dry it. Finally, there’s another 30 minutes to comb it out. This is for a wig. Most entrepreneurs don’t spend this much time practicing their pitch for venture capitalists. CMY

7. Make your customers feel close and important – The buildings on Main Street are 5/8th scale. This is to make people feel like they are closer to the action and important. Most companies erect edifices to make their customers feel small, and their bosses feel big. Disneyland does the opposite. Walt Disney used to crouch down to see Disneyland from a child’s perspective. 8. Know the facts – What is the ratio of adults to kids at any given moment in the park? Believe it or not, there are four adults for every kid. I would have never guessed that. This has big ramifications: Disneyland can’t just be a place for kids since kids are only 20 percent of the customers. 9. Green is good – The floats are all battery-powered. The fireworks are launched with compressed air, not explosive charges. The trains are bio-diesel and burn the oil from the park’s restaurants. Currently, 80 percent of the 1.3 pounds
