As we enter the Holiday Season I want to take this opportunity to encourage you to shop local. Through the Chamber we also have Local Buck$ that can be used just like regular cash at Chamber member’s stores and shops. The benefits of shopping local are numerous, but most importantly it supports our local economy in numerous ways. The New Economics Foundation did some research on this a few years back. The bottom line to their research is that twice the money stayed in the community when people shop locally. Here is another twist to shopping locally. It exposes gaps in the local market. This is something we as a Chamber need to look at. If consumers are regularly “going out of town” to buy a particular product that is not available here then there is a clear demand that perhaps one of our Chamber members could either offer or start a new business in. So let us all keep our eyes and ears open and look for and create opportunities for our community!
This past month saw a group of Chamber members go to China. This is an incredible experience to learn about a different culture and network with other Chambers throughout the US. Heidi is presently looking into other such trip opportunities tto participate in. I firmly believe a well rounded view of the world around us benefits us here at home and in our business. So stay tuned to learn about other upcoming trips through the Chamber.
I cannot believe we are in the final quarter of the year. This for many is a very hectic time in business and personal lives, but let’s stay focused on what is important and be shining examples to the rest of our community. It is my pleasure to serve as your Chamber President and I, along with the Chamber staff, are here to assist you and your business in any way we can. Drew MacEwen President

Message from Chamber Executive Director I never thought I’d say this living in Washington State, but thank God for the rain! What a summer we’ve had – it was gorgeous all the way through Oysterfest, and through a major forest fire. My thanks goes out to our firefighters who, at times, were fighting the fire just feet away from homes. Not one home was lost and no one was injured. For what could have been a major disaster, our firefighters did an exceptional job of keeping it under control. Great job! With the turn of the weather, we begin looking at the end of the year. One of my favorite events in Mason County takes place this month as the Mason General Hospital Foundation transforms the Pavilion into a winter wonderland the week before Thanksgiving. Take the time to check it out; you won’t be sorry that you did! They’re going the extra mile this year and adding a couple of new events. I hope you’ll join me at the Business Luncheon on Friday for a great occasion! With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, I hope you’ll take a minute to ponder all that you’re thankful for and note all the good things in your life. A thing I’m particularly thankful for is the opportunity to travel to New York City and watch the Anna’s Bay Chorale as it debuts this fall and serves as the anchor choir in the annual performance of Handel’s Messiah at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall! This is an incredible honor, as they were invited as the producers kept coming across Anna’s Bay through their YouTube videos. I can’t wait to experience it and share the experience with all of you.

Journal lands nine WNPA awards
Adapted from Shelton-Mason County Journal editorial published October 4, 2012 The Chamber is proud to announce that local newspaper The Shelton-Mason County Journal received nine awards from the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association (WNPA) at the September 2012 Better Newspaper Contest banquet and convention in Yakima. Each year, the WNPA, which celebrated its 125th anniversary this year, takes submissions from its newspaper members. Those submissions are then judged by other state newspaper publisher organizations. This year, New York and Washington State traded and judged each other’s submissions. Of the nine awards — six were in the newsroom and three in the advertising room. Two of the Journal’s awards were first-place honors — sales representative Dave Pierik and advertising designer Will Adams combined to win the Best Use of Humor in Advertising and Best YouthOriented Content awards. Former editor and sales representative Jesse Mullen added a third-place award for Best Ad Campaign for a Single Advertiser (black and white or color). In the newsroom, reporter Natalie Johnson won four awards. Our primary goal is to publish a newspaper that’s chock full of stories that are relevant and interesting to our community. If we get a few awards along the way, that’s fine, too.” 4

Chamber signs on to Small Business Saturday Coalition again in 2012 The Chamber’s mission is to encourage and maintain a vibrant business community, promote tourism, and facilitate economic development. One objective which supports our mission is the ongoing “Shop Local” campaign. In addition to offering semiannual coupons through our member businesses, and offering LOCAL BUCK$, the Chamber will again this year support national Small Business Saturday.
WHAT IS SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY? Small Business Saturday SM is a national initiative that marks a day to support the local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country. First there was Black Friday, then Cyber Monday. Now, Small Business Saturday is an event that drives shoppers to local, independently-owned merchants.
• 89% agree that locally-owned, independent businesses contribute positively through taxes and jobs • Independent retailers that are in communities with a “buy local” initiative reported revenue growth of 5.6% on average in 2010, compared to 2.1% for those elsewhere

Tourism is Focus of November Membership Meeting The Chamber’s November Membership Meeting, sponsored by Anna’s Bay Center for Music, will be held on Thursday, November 29 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Little Creek Casino Resort. This meeting will offer a facilitated conversation about tourism in Mason County. Tourism is undeniably an important economic driver in Mason County. With thousands of vacation homes dotting our shorelines and increased traffic on our roads and in restaurants and shops during holidays, it is apparent that tourism has a place in our economy. But how important is tourism to our local economy; how successful are we at capturing our share of the tourism market; and what impacts does it have on you and your business? The Chamber is in the fortunate position to partner with a number of local associations to maximize funding, promotional exposure, and collaborate to build tourism in Shelton, Mason County, and Western Washington. Civic Improvement Project Results in Cleaner Waters, Stronger Economy By Brett Bishop, Little Skookum Shellfish Growers
In September, representatives from state and local governments, business owners, and citizens joined the City of Shelton to celebrate the completion of the Wastewater Treatment System Rehabilitation Project. What many people may not know is how this civic improvement has begun to impact the shellfish industry in Mason County. The water in Big Skookum (Hammersly Inlet and Oakland Bay) is much cleaner now because of investments and upgrades to the Shelton Waste Water Treatment Facility and its infrastructure. A tank and process timing was upgraded to improve mixing and flushing during the tidal changes. All bio-solids are removed and processed into a high quality pellet fertilizer. The old method of disinfection was chlorine, and now UV light does the job better and safer, without chemical residue. The system was built to accommodate population increases within the Shelton Urban Growth Boundary. The water that flows out from the facility into the bay now meets rigorous permit
requirements, and that clean water circulates everywhere in South Sound. This has significantly contributed to the recent upgrade in harvest status for 750 acres of Oakland Bay. By shellfish bed standards, this is huge! This means that instead of sitting out all those rainfall closures during the winter, growers and tribal shellfishers will be out harvesting clams and oysters, earning paychecks, and feeling grateful for the new opportunities. Environmental benefits accrue to our watersheds and waterways and to all the lifeforms that depend upon them. This builds our local economy and makes our future as shellfish growers more secure.
This clean, efficient, state-ofthe-art facility would be nothing without skilled operators. I’ve met some of those people, and they are the best part of the whole deal. This is the dirtiest of all jobs – cleaning up our own poop. The Squaxin Tribe has been waiting 150 years – seven generations – for the mess to be cleaned up, and this is a big step in the right direction. From the perspective of water quality, the facility is functioning more like a clear creek than the sewer pipes of the olden days. This is extraordinarily good news, and my only regret is that Justin Taylor was not there with us to celebrate the ribbon-cutting.
The event would have had deep meaning for him, the Champion of Big Skookum. As water-people, we owe our gratitude to those who made this happen, and rather than express it in words, we are going to go out and grow more shellfish in those newly rejuvenated waters, showing our thanks in that way. Brett Bishop and his wife Lisa are the owners of Little Skookum Shellfish Growers. While Lisa operates the company, Brett also works at Seattle Shellfish, which has beds in Oakland Bay.

The stern-wheeler S.G. Simpson Justin Cowling, Executive Director | Mason County Historical Society
The S.G. Simpson stern-wheeler was designed by the first captain, Ed Gustafson, and built in 1907 for the Shelton Transportation Company. This 117-foot vessel ran a daily route of Shelton-Olympia-Tacoma for 20 years, the Shelton to Olympia leg taking 90 minutes. By 1922, she was carrying freight from Shelton to Tacoma, and in 1928, the passenger cabin was removed and renamed the E.G. English. This ship served its final days as a Skagit River tug until it was abandoned in 1945 and destroyed by the Army Corps of Engineers.

A Beautiful Community – Thanks to you! Each year, the Shelton Mason County Chamber of Commerce brings gorgeous flower baskets, bright street banners, and Christmas decorations to hang proudly in our community. Each beautification effort shows our sense of pride in community and helps create a friendly environment for citizens and visitors. In recent years, business community and individuals alike have made contributions to fund the tremendous expense associated with the installation and upkeep of the 75 flower baskets, 100 streetlight banners, and 65 Christmas decoration sites. Again this year, the Chamber asked for everyone’s involvement and we are grateful for the long list of residents, businesses, and service organizations that made donations to this very visible source of community pride. No County or City tax dollars are allocated towards these projects – thank you donors for making Mason County a beautiful place to live, work, and play! The 2012 Beautification Committee – Kathy Burbidge, Steve Andrewski, Libby Avery, Jim Grimes, Jesse Mullen, Ron Pannell, Sue Patterson, Patti Tupper and Duane Wilson – worked hard to garner community support for these efforts. In addition to individual requests, the committee offered a sponsorship program, organized a benefit movie night, and even provided Dahlias at the local farmer’s market in order to generate funds.
For the entire summer season, bountiful baskets of stunning flowers lined Mason County’s corridors. And, as we approach the holiday season, Christmas Town USA will don its trimmings of lights, garland, and décor, as our winter beautification program opens. For more information about these programs, or to get involved, visit sheltonchamber.org/beautification. In addition to the committee, the Chamber would like to recognize everyone who supported our beautification efforts:
