See you next month!

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

So, I promised myself I would not start my editor’s note with the words, “Instead of going off to college, our boy went off to jail.” But, you know, it’s tough not to write about what’s really going on in my head. I mean, how am I supposed to put aside all the deep pain and disappointment we felt through the holidays and just write something dishonestly fluffy? I just can’t and I don’t even think it is fair to you for me to do that. I strive to make sure that She is as open, out and real as possible. And sometimes, being that real means being willing to admit that, just like everyone else, the life of the woman at the top isn’t always warm and fuzzy. I won’t go into the stupid details, suffice to say that two weeks short of heading off to create the successful future we all worked so hard to give him a shot at, the boy decided to sow too many wild 19 year-old oats in one night and ended up breaking a lot of hearts and shattering a lot of dreams, including his own. It wasn’t easy, but two days before Christmas, we made the decision to wipe away the tears long enough to decorate the tree, deck the halls and find a way to celebrate the good things in our lives. We are truly blessed to have a group of amazing friends who stood behind us every step of the way. They called. They texted. They cappuccino-ed with us. They cried with us. They reminded us over and over again that we have done everything right and none of this was our fault. They shopped with us at 3am. I think, if we had asked, they would have even cleaned the bathroom for us. And when we were ready, they laughed with us again. Through all of this, I remembered that there are things in life that you just can’t control. You can’t control other people’s choices and for the most part, you can’t control what the consequences will be for those choices. There are many times in our lives when, as difficult as it may be, we have to just accept that it is what it is. Whether it is as a parent, a friend or even simply a human being, there will be times of great joy and times of great pain and disappointment. And it’s vital that you don’t let the bad things overtake you to the point where you stop experiencing or recognizing the good things in your life. So, the new year is here and my only resolutions are to love those who love and support me more than I loved them yesterday, and to remember that while every dark cloud might not always have a silver lining, if you allow yourself to do it, you can look beyond the clouds and find the sun is still there.

With Kandi Koated, R&B singer/songwriter and Real Housewife of Atlanta, Kandi has taken the reins and delivered a cohesive album with everything you would expect from a singer who has helped create numerous songs that have served as the soundtrack to our lives. “The album is about love, relationships. It’s meeting someone. Falling for them. Falling out with them…Moving on. It’s all there,” she says of the project, which is almost completely self-written. “I am giving you a little taste of me,” says Kandi “When I think of candy coated, I think of adding a little sugar to something and making it better.”

In the comedy flick From Prada to Nada, opening in theaters on January 27, we get to see a Latina spin on Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility,” starring Camilla Belle, former Spy Kid, Alexa Vega and Kuno Becker. Screenwriters Fina Torres (Woman on Top) and Luis Alfaro bring us this charmingly funny tale of two spoiled sisters who have been left penniless after their father’s sudden death and are forced to move in with their estranged aunt in, of all places, East Los Angeles.

Oprah Winfrey has been on TV for almost 25 years. For an hour a day, she’s been bringing “live your best life” television right into your living room. Well now it’s time for what’s next. OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network will be a 24/7 cable network devoted to self-discovery, to connecting viewers to their best self and to the world. With a full line-up of programming, OWN launched on January 1, 2011, and is be available from Comcast, Cablevision, Time Warner, Cox, Charter, DirecTV, Dish Network, AT&T U-Verse and Verizon Fios and almost every other cable television distributor.

Edie Brickell will release her new solo album Edie Brickell on January 11 on her own independent label, racecarLOTTA Records. Coinciding with the release, Brickell will perform a special show with Iron & Wine on January 29 at Radio City Music Hall. Brickell began writing her self-titled solo album during her 2003 tour in support of Volcano. The solo record was then put hold to focus on The Gaddabouts, a new project featuring Steve Gadd, Pino Palladino and Andy FairweatherLow. Both conceived of and developed throughout the past decade, the two projects were coincidentally finished at the same time.

The 25-year old Crystal Bowersox’s emotive folk-rock-country style was catapulted from the coffeehouses and subway tunnels of Chicago to millions of homes, when she placed second on last season’s American Idol. Crystal’s first studio release, Farmer’s Daughter, chronicles her personal experience of a dark childhood, to finding love and happiness as a young woman and everything in between. “It’s my life story,” Crystal says. “And that includes the good and bad chapters. I hope that people can appreciate the honesty in the lyrics and get to know me as a person through my music. I’m an open book and this is my diary.”

Premiering on January 20 at 10pm is USA Network series, Fairly Legal, starring L Word fave Sarah Shahi. Once a lawyer at her family’s firm, Kate Reed’s frustration with the legal system led her to a new career as a mediator. Thanks to her understanding of human nature, thorough legal knowledge and wry sense of humor, she’s a natural at resolving disputes... except when it comes to her own. Several great shows also return this month with new episodes, including Grey’s Anatomy on January 11, Criminal Minds on January 12, American Idol on January 19, featuring new judge JLo and Bones returns on January 20.

[

NOT TO BE MISSED: The Dilema featuring the fabulous Queen Latifah, in theaters on January 14 and The Green Hornet, with sweet and sexy Cameron Diaz, also in theaters on January 14. PLUS: This month, you can pre-order Wolfe Video’s A Marine Story, starring Dreya Weber on DVD before the rush when it releases in March. Visit shemag.com for details.

IN THE NEWS >THE UNITED NATIONS RESTORES SEXUAL-ORIENTATION TO THE ANTI-EXECUTION RESOLUTION

With an audience of approximately 500 attendees and wearing a purple tie, President Barack Obama signs the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010 during a ceremony at the Interior Department in Washington, D.C., Dec. 22, 2010. (Official White House Photo by Chuck Kennedy)

>THE REPEAL IS SIGNED. WHAT’S NEXT? Walker Burttschell, 28, of Miami, was one of the first to thank Obama personally on December 22nd after he signed the repeal of DADT into law. “It was so good to shake his hand,” he said. Burttschell said he left school right after 9-11 to join the Marines but was outed two years later when someone broke into his email account and discharged. “No longer will our country be denied the service of thousands of patriotic Americans who were forced to leave the military—regardless of their skills, no matter their bravery or their zeal, no matter their years of exemplary performance—because they happen to be gay. No longer will tens of thousands of Americans in uniform be asked to live a lie, or look over their shoulder, in order to serve the country that they love,” said President Obama during his speech. “After 17 years of this failed and discriminatory law, a stain has been removed from our nation. Today gay and lesbian patriots serving their country in silence, and thousands more who wish to serve the country they love, can breathe a sigh of relief that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is on its way out. Soon, all service members will be able to serve with the full honesty and integrity the uniform demands. No more

careers will come to an end because of an unjust law. ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ has weakened our military readiness and is now on its way to the dustbin of history,” stated HRC President Joe Solmonese. “President Obama was decisive and forceful in steering the course as he brought along critical stakeholders, including the Defense Department. Now, it’s on to finishing the job at the Pentagon. Troops remain at risk under the law. We respectfully renew our call for Secretary Gates to use his authority to suspend all ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ investigations and discharges during this limbo period. Until there is certification and until the 60day implementation period must be wrapped up no later than the first quarter of 2011,” said Aubrey Sarvis, Army veteran and executive director for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. WHAT’S NEXT? • Certification: The President, the Secretary of Defense, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff must certify that the Defense Department is prepared to implement repeal. • 60-day waiting period: DADT will still be the law until 60 days after certification. Service members are still at risk for discharge as the repeal of DADT is not effective immediately. SHE -

The United Nations voted at the end of December to restore a reference to killings due to sexual orientation that had been deleted from a resolution condemning unjustified executions. The General Assembly voyed by a significant margin, 93 to 55. The United States led a successful effort on Tuesday to return LGBT people to the list of those whose extrajudicial executions the U.N. condemns. In November, the United Nations General Assembly Human Rights Committee approved a proposal by several Arab and African nations to remove “sexual orientation” from a resolution condemning extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions. In addition to slayings over sexual orientation, the resolution specifies many other types of violence—killings for racial, national, ethnic, religious or linguistic reasons and killings of refugees, indigenous people and other groups. The UN’s main assembly normally passes similar resolutions every two years, and the most recent resolution in 2008 declaration had contained an specific reference to LGBT killings. President Obama said the vote “marks an important moment in the struggle for civil and human rights,” and that the “time has come for all nations to redouble our efforts to end discrimination and violence against LGBT people.”

WHAT

[ SAFETY IN SCHOOLS ]

WITH JOWHARAH SANDERS

WHERE

STOP MAKING EXCUSES The last few months have been tough to swallow for the families who lost their loved ones and for those of us who are at the forefront, fighting the war against bullying and teen suicides. This month’s issue is about taking ownership and creating possibilities for a new year and a new life. For the past year, I’ve worked with a group of brilliant teenagers who gave me insight into their lives. They were sort of my first “case studies” and it was heart breaking to say the least. Let’s just say I have my work cut out for me this month, so pardon me if I step on any toes. The first thing we need to realize as parents is that being an adult doesn’t give us the right to rule with an iron fist, berate, degrade or set bad examples and then cover it up with the famous “do as I say, not as I do” oath that has been passed down through many generations. They see us driving drunk. They see us popping pills. They smell the pot coming from under our doors. They know what domestic violence is when they see it. My personal favorite is that most of them report learning words like “faggot” at home and some even consider their parents to be the biggest bullies in town. My purpose isn’t to point a finger or tell you where you have gone wrong. On behalf of your kids, I am offering tough love this month. My advice is free. The phone call to my office is free. However, ignoring the warning signs that you need help will cost your family an amount you can’t imagine.

TAKING ACTION The first step we need to take in order to move forward is to admit that we have a problem. If you don’t have the tools, ask for them. If you are frustrated with your child’s behavior and feeling hopeless about the future and how to be an effective parent, you are not alone. WHO TO TURN TO WHEN YOU NEED HELP There are multiple organizations and government entities at your disposal. If you are unsure whom to call first, dial 211. They will connect you with multiple resources in your area. I recently had a friend tell me that she can’t talk to her daughter without yelling. She said, “I’m frustrated, and tired. I’m thinking of sending her off to a boarding school.” My heart broke. What they need is communication. So my gift to them will be to enroll them in the Communication Solutions course at the Yes Institute. If you want to place your child in a mentoring program where they will have the opportunity to learn hands-on life skills, call National Voices for Equality, Education and Enlightenment (NVEEE). How can we overcome issues surrounding bullying and school violence if we remain segregated in our thoughts and in our actions? In order for teens to become tolerant, respectful and caring of other human beings, they must first see the other person’s humanity and recognize their similarities versus their differences. Visit www.NVEEE.org or call 954.561.2626. Jowharah Sanders, Founder and Chairman of National Voices for Equality, Education and Enlightenment (NVEEE).

“WE HOPE THAT OUR NEW GOVERNOR WILL ACCEPT THAT AS THE STATE’S CHIEF EXECUTIVE HE REPRESENTS ALL FLORIDIANS, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Our greatest expectation is for Governor Scott to find resolve between personal convictions and his duty as a civil servant elected to represent the interests of all Floridians. Legislatively this means we expect the Governor to keep adoption for parents who are gay and lesbian legal and deter any new legislation which would unnecessarily put gay and transgender people in harms way. We ask that he keep an open mind and an open door so that his LGBT constituents feel as if they have a voice in the highest governmental office in the state.” —CJ Ortuño, Save-Dade Executive Director on new FL Governor, Rick Scott, and the LGBT community.

Florida now ranks among the top five states in the nation in protecting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people from discrimination, according to a report released last month by the statewide civil rights group Equality Florida. Equality Florida’s report, Winning Equality, looks at the progress made in Florida since the organization formed in 1997. It documents pro-equality successes in areas of workplace non-discrimination, family recognition, and school safety, while also highlighting that the organization has defeated anti-LGBT legislative efforts in every session over the past 13 years. “A great deal of work remains, but Floridians can be proud of the progress in our state over the past decade,” said Nadine Smith, executive director for Equality Florida. “This report demonstrates that while political winds may shift during an election cycle, the long-term trend in Florida is strongly in favor of fairness and equality for everyone, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.”

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE REPORT INCLUDE: * REPEAL OF THE ANTI-GAY ADOPTION BAN After 33 years, child welfare advocates are cheering the end to Florida’s notorious antigay adoption ban, which was ruled unconstitutional by the 3rd District Court of Appeals in

2010. Florida had been the only state in the nation to enforce such a ban. Florida’s Governor, Attorney General and Dept of Children and Families decided not to appeal the Appeals Court decision to the State Supreme Court. * BANNING WORKPLACE DISCRIMINATION The majority of Floridians are now protected via local human rights ordinances from discrimination in the workplace, housing and in public accommodations based on sexual orientation. More than half of those policies also include protections on the basis of gender identity and expression. * PROVIDING DOMESTIC PARTNER BENEFITS There are 11 Florida cities and counties that provide domestic partnership benefits either through domestic partner registries or public employee benefit programs. These programs reach 1 out of every 3 Floridians. * ENSURING SCHOOL SAFETY The passage of Florida’s anti-bullying law in 2008 has led schools across the state to adopt more effective anti-bullying policies which specifically address anti-gay harassment. Today, the majority of Florida students are protected from bullying based on sexual orientation. Increasingly, those policies now include protections based on gender identity and expression. * ENGAGING BUSINESS LEADERS Businesses SHE -

have emerged as leading advocates for the passage of non-discrimination protections. Many of Florida’s largest employers have adopted fully inclusive anti-discrimination policies and are active in touting the benefits to the economy of such protections via a program called Equality Means Business (equalitymeansbusiness.org) The report includes maps of Florida comparing the existence of LGBT legal protections in 1997 and today. In 1997, only South Florida and Hillsborough County provided legal protections of any kind to LGBT people. Today pro-LGBT protections and benefits exist throughout South, Central and Northern Florida. Florida now leads the Southeastern United States in passing over 55 local policies outlawing discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, banning harassment of LGBT students, and providing domestic partnership benefits to our families. The report credits coalition-building, supporting local partners, backing pro-equality candidates, key legal challenges and investing in public education for the past thirteen years as the ingredients for success. To read the full report visit www.eqfl.org/ equalityreport. Equality Florida is the largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s LGBT community.

BY: DENISE WARNER

If you’re an 80’s fanatic, there is no question who Taylor Dayne is. You danced to “Tell It to My Heart” in the clubs, you dedicated “I’ll Always Love You” to your high school sweetheart on the radio. But Taylor Dayne is nowhere near done! She continues to crank out great music, with her loyal fans following her every beat of the way. A little older, a little wiser, but still one sexy, powerful voice, Taylor Dayne will be headlining the Fortitude Weekend right here in Fort Lauderdale this coming Sunday, February 20th, so here’s your chance to get acquainted or reacquainted with this tour de force of music. WHAT’S THE WORD ON SISTERELLA AND CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE MICHAEL JACKSON CONNECTION?

Rehearsal for Sisterella starts this spring. I will be playing the evil step-mother to Michael Jackson’s nephew, TJ Jackson, the main character of the play. The connection with Michael is that I opened for him during The BAD Tour and we were both managed by Frank Dileo at one point in our careers. Sisterella was Michael’s first producing project with theatre and now Frank is executive producing this play. It’s going to be a ton of fun! DID I HEAR ABOUT SOME TALK ABOUT A REALITY SHOW? IS THAT STILL A POSSIBILITY?

A reality show is definitely still a possibility. We will see what happens. I think that’s where it is at right now, and I have been meeting with different production companies and currently just shot a sizzle reel that they will be shopping around YOU’RE SUCH A FRIEND OF THE LGBT COMMUNITY! WE LOVE THAT! YOU DID A YOUTUBE TALK

“THE FEELING OF BEING LEFT OUT SPANS MUCH FARTHER BEYOND RELIGION OR SEXUAL ORIENTATION. IT DOES GET BETTER.” ABOUT BULLYING. WHAT PROMPTED THAT?

I have always been a huge advocate for equality and gay rights. The YouTube video against bullying was a project I helped out with through It Gets Better to benefit The Trevor Project. I felt that it was really important to let others know that many of us, if not all, have gone through similar experiences and that we just have to work through them. It Gets Better struck close to home for me. Growing up as a Jewish girl in Freeport, which is a predominately a Catholic region, it taught me to take things from a bigger perspective and not feel so alone. The feeling of being left out spans much farther beyond religion or sexual orientation. It does get better. There are moments that are trying but we have to reach out past our own internal fears and find the tools and strengths to get through the difficult situations.

EVERY TIME I SEE YOU, YOU LOOK GREAT, AND SO DIFFERENT. IS IT A CONSCIOUS CHOICE TO REINVENT YOUR LOOK?

Thank you! I try to eat healthy and exercise as much as I can. It gets hard when you are constantly on the road playing different gigs but I have a wonderful trainer who keeps me in line. HOW HAS BEING A MOM AFFECTED YOU? AND YOUR MUSIC?

WHEN YOU FIRST BURST ON THE SCENE YOU HAD SUCH AMAZING SUCCESS, DID IT CRE-

Being a mom has affected me in different ways. It makes you think of things in a different perspective and it makes my goals change. I have college to pay for (for twins!). No, but seriously, it makes me think about my actions and how I want my kids to experience life and grow as I want them to be the kind of adults I would want to hang out with. I have more patience now…

ATE A PRESSURE ON YOUR FOLLOW UP PROJECTS?

WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC IS ON YOUR RADAR THESE DAYS?

When I first burst on the scene there was a lot of pressure from a number of different influencers to be or act a certain way. I have always felt that this was what I was meant to do so the pressure served as a catalyst. From a very young age I have put that pressure on myself, and pushed myself harder. I wouldn’t say it created pressure on my follow-up projects; I tend to pay more attention to the music and how much fun I am having with it and what I can do different. It’s my team that re-

I listen to everything from Bob Dylan to Lady Gaga to Justin Timberlake. I love ALL types of music.

YOU’VE BRANCHED INTO JEWELRY DESIGN WITH YOUR OWN LINE. WHAT INSPIRED THAT?

That’s a loaded question. What inspired that— when I first started it was not acceptable to put your face on a brand, you just didn’t do it. Nowadays, you are free to be a lot more creative and do different things—for me jewelry is one of them. I am really excited about it.

BY: TINA SORDELLINI PHOTOS: BRAVO

Tabatha Coffey has devoted her entire professional life to achieving excellence in hair design and education. She now brings her years of hands-on experience to help struggling salon owners turn around their businesses in the Bravo series, Tabatha’s Salon Takeover. With her signature edgy style, youthful energy and exceptional skills as an artist and educator, Tabatha Coffey is without question the industry’s golden girl. Her resume reads like a biography of a born hairstylist. From the beginning of her career when she was 14 in her native Surfer’s Paradise, Australia, to her appearance as the “Fan Favorite” on Bravo’s hit series, Shear Genius in 2007, Tabatha has been completely devoted to the art of hair. Over the last 27 years, she has worked with a veritable who’s who of the industry in Australia, Great Britain and the United States. She has continuously developed,

fine-tuned and broadened her skills as an artist, educator and business owner. For 10 years, she represented a globally known hair company as a key member of the artistic team. In addition to regularly traveling around the world to educate stylists and represent the company at hair shows, Tabatha also worked closely to help create the incredible hairstyles featured in advertising and trend collection imagery. Coffey has a new memoir coming out from Harper Collins titled It’s Not Really About the Hair: The Honest Truth About Life, Love, and the Business of Beauty. Coffey works regularly as an editorial stylist for fashion and beauty publications and backstage during New York’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Her work has been featured in several publications and is the go-to girl for beauty questions in the industry. When she is not on the road taking over SHE -

someone else’s salon, Coffey is busy leading her team of hairstylists and colorists at her own salon, Industrie Hair Gurus in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where she is in high demand and has built a large clientele. She also works with clients in Los Angeles at the Warren-Tricomi salon in West Hollywood. I recently had the opportunity to toss some questions Tabatha’s way, about the industry, being out and the third season of Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, which premiered last month. WAS IT AN EASY TRANSITION FOR YOU TO GO FROM BEING A CONTESTANT AND FANFAVORITE ON SHEAR GENIUS IN 2007 TO HAVING YOUR OWN SHOW?

I love doing the show because I can help other salon owners and hairdressers, so it is a great experience.

WAS BEING A FAN FAVORITE ONE OF THE MAJOR REASONS THAT YOU GOT YOUR OWN SHOW? DID YOU EXPECT IT?

I didn’t expect being offered my own show and I truly don’t know if being a fan favorite was the motivator. I do know that I am very thankful and love being able to help the salons I go into. IN WATCHING THE SHOW, IT SEEMS THAT MOST OF THE TIME, THE PERSON WHO ASKED FOR YOUR HELP IS THE ONE WHO IS MOST RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PROBLEMS OF THE SALON. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?

It’s difficult for people to change and it’s hard for a lot of these owners to turn the mirror on themselves and realize that in some cases they are a big part of the problem. That is my biggest challenge. BESIDES HAVING A VERY SUCCESSFUL SALON YOURSELF, WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS THAT MAKES YOU SO EFFECTIVE AT HELPING OTHERS TURN THEIR SALONS AROUND?

I have been in the industry since I was 14 years old. For over 10 years, I was an educator for an international product company and I have done plenty of editorial work. But most importantly, I care about the industry and the salons I go into. I want to help. THE HAIR INDUSTRY IS VERY GAY MALEDOMINATED. DID YOU FIND IT DIFFICULT TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL OR TAKEN SERIOUSLY AS A GAY WOMAN IN THE INDUSTRY?

Not at all. It is about being good at your job, not about sexuality or gender.

think there are really distinct trends. But a lot of celebrities are going shorter, like Emma Watson, and going darker, like Jessica Biel. When people see celebs willing to change their looks, then they will too.

WITH THE SALON OWNERS YOU HAVE HELPED DURING THE SHOW TO SEE HOW THINGS ARE GOING?

I do. I enjoy hearing about their successes. ARE THERE ANY PLANS OR HAVE YOU CON-

IN AN EPISODE LAST SEASON, YOU WENT TO AN ALL-GAY MALE STAFFED SALON THAT ONLY WORKED WITH MALE CLIENTELE.

SIDERED DOING AN UPDATE EPISODE SO VIEWERS CAN SEE HOW THEIR FAVORITES HAVE FARED SINCE YOU LEFT?

GIVEN THE SEPARATION THAT TENDS TO EXIST WITHIN THE LGBT COMMUNIT Y, WAS THERE A POINT THAT YOU FELT OFFENDED BY

Keep watching season three. I am happy to say we check back in with some of the memorable salons from seasons one and two to see how they are doing now.

THAT EXCLUSIVE ATTITUDE OR WERE YOU JUST SECRETLY SNICKERING OVER THE IDEA THAT IS WAS GOING TO TAKE A GAY WOMAN TO SAVE THEIR BUSINESS?

Scott definitely had his issues, but at the end of the day, it’s about saving his business. If he wants to save and grow his business, he needs to be inclusive to all the members of the community. I never snickered, I just found his stubbornness frustrating. HAS THERE EVER BEEN A TIME WHEN YOU WALKED IN TO A SALON, SAW THE SITUATION AS A WHOLE, WALKED OUT AND REALIZED THAT YOU EITHER COULDN’T OR WOULDN’T HELP THEM?

I have walked out when I get frustrated, but I have always gone back. I truly want the salons I visit to be successes and that is why I always go back. CONSIDERING YOUR BEGINNINGS IN AUSTRALIA AND CONNECTIONS ACROSS THE GLOBE, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE

FOR OTHER WOMEN WHO ARE CONSIDERING BECOMING BUSINESS OWNERS, WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE KEY FACTORS IN HAVING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS?

Have a plan and never stop striving to be the best. Make sure you are educated on the type of business you want to own so you know the pitfalls. Don’t go in naive or blind. SERIOUSLY, IN THE EARTH, MOON, SUN EPISODE, WE WANTED TO JUMP THROUGH THE SCREEN AND TOSS NICOLE OUT THE DOOR OURSELVES. HOW EXCITED WERE YOU WHEN JANEEN NUFER FINALLY FIRED NICOLE?

I was really glad that Janeen took charge of her business and stepped up. I am never excited when someone is let go, but if they are not doing their job, it’s something that has to be done for the sake of the business. YOU HAVE A BOOK COMING OUT ON JANUARY 25TH, IT’S NOT REALLY ABOUT THE HAIR:

I had family in Ridgewood so it was an easy decision.

THE HONEST TRUTH ABOUT LIFE, LOVE, AND THE BUSINESS OF BEAUTY. WAS THE BOOK THE NEXT OBVIOUS STEP IN YOUR CAREER?

OF THOSE THINGS?

MANY TIMES DURING THE SHOW YOU HAVE SAID THAT YOU GO INTO YOUR SALON EVERY BUSINESS DAY. HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO

Although it was difficult to write about myself, I enjoyed sharing some of my life lessons with fans. Hopefully, there is a takeaway for readers.

DO THAT WHEN YOU ARE TRAVELING SO MUCH FOR THE SHOW AND OTHER PROJECTS?

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WHAT THREE WORDS WOULD YOU USE TO DESCRIBE SEASON THREE OF TABATHA’S SALON TAKEOVER?

LIKE IN FASHION, WHEN IT COMES TO HAIR, SHOULD A WOMAN GO WITH THE TRENDS

It is difficult to do both, but I have a strong staff and a great manager who knows my standards and my vision.

OR GO WITH WHAT FITS HER LOOK?

RIDGEWOOD, NJ FOR YOUR HOME BASE?

I think clients should always go for what suits them, but there are subtle changes that can be made to a style so a client feels she is on trend and current. WHO SETS THE TREND WHEN IT COMES TO HAIRSTYLES?

Fashion used to set the trends for hair. Now it is more driven by celebrities. WHAT ARE THE HOTTEST TRENDS IN HAIRSTYLES FOR 2011?

I’m not a fan of talking “trends” because I don’t SHE -

Falafel Bistro first opened its doors in 2007 in beautiful Coral Springs, attracting residents throughout the entire Fort Lauderdale area and visitors from all over the world. Falafel Bistro is inviting, low-key and casual and uses only the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients in providing a global vegetarian and health conscious cuisine. Owner/Chef, Ilan Cohen, envisioned a cozy cafe where he could prepare his favorite Mediterranean recipes for locals and tourists who appreciate fresh, delicious food, great prices, good wine and warm service. You’ll often find Ilan in the kitchen making sure the hummus is just right as his wife Lauren creates the “dessert of the day”. Ilan cooks healthful, authentic Mediterranean food using traditional family recipes from his native Israel. His innovation with flavor and seasoning can be savored in every dish, particularly his creative fish entrees, such as sea bass with garlic cilantro. There are also some standbys for those that just want a healthy wrap sandwich...and daily homemade soups are the talk of the town! Falafel Bistro is the perfect place to kick back, relax and enjoy unique and flavorful Mediterranean delights with a glass or two of wine.

As an out, lezbo comedian, my desire is not to just push the envelope and entertain, but to inspire independent thinking and creativity. I love being a part of organizations and events like this where we take our irreverence and fun and fabulousness, alongside our urgency and the fierce attitudes that keep us in action to help ourselves and each other.” The Sunday, February 20th live concert will be held at the recently renovated War Memorial Auditorium. The driving force behind Fortitude Weekend is Nick De Biase of Centaur, the largest LGBT record label. “The concept arose when both of my parents were dying from cancer at the end of 2009,” says De Biase. “My mother, Lydia, was a very giving person. Before she passed away, I told her that I would establish a foundation in her name to carry on her legacy of giving and to honor her memory.” So Nick started a non-profit called The L Foundation and decided their first fundraising venture would be to produce a benefit concert. ”After meeting with many of the powers that be in Fort Lauderdale, it became clear the concept should be expanded into an entire weekend of events,” says De Biase. The name Fortitude was chosen because the word connotes strength, heart, determination, will power, courage, spirit and toughness, all words that also define us as members of the LGBT community. The “fort” also references Fort Lauderdale. All proceeds from Fortitude go to charity. amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, is the main national beneficiary, while the Pride Center and the Fort Lauderdale-Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festivals are two of the local charities. Many partners have developed along the way thus far including Centaur Entertainment, Edge Media, Florida Agenda, Genre Latino, Hotspots Magazine, Just Circuit, Marks, Mark’s List, The Out Club, Broward Visitors & Convention Bureau, Crown & Anchor presents Independence 2011 (Provincetown), Gay Days, gir(L), My Lesbian Radio, Next Magazine, Pandora Events, Purple Party-Dallas, She Magazine, South Florida Gay News, What’s Happening Magazine, amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, the Pride Center at Equality Park, Miami-Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festivals, Exit 66 Nightclub, The Manor Complex, and New Moon Bar, with many new partners joining every week. Thousands of people, from all over the country, are expected to attend the many different events of Fortitude Weekend. THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE

BY MARISSA COHEN

TO OPEN AT RISING ACTION THEATRE Frank Marcus’s play The Killing of Sister George first shocked and delighted London audiences in 1964, and then again on Broadway in 1966 as one of the first plays about a lesbian couple. Beryl Reid was later nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Sister George in the 1968 film. Many people compare this play to the movie Whatever Happened to Baby Jane and say George makes Baby Jane look sane! Sister George is a beloved character in the popular radio series Applehurst, a nurse who ministers to the medical needs and personal problems of the local villagers. In real life, she is played by June Buckridge, a gin-guzzling, cigar-chomping sadist. Buckridge, who is the antithesis of the sweet character she plays, lives with Alice “Childie” McNaught. When Buckridge discovers her character is scheduled to be killed, she becomes increasingly impossible to work and live with. Mercy Croft, an executive at the radio station, intercedes in both Buckridge’s professional and personal lives to help, but Croft actually has an agenda of her own. The play is directed by Jane Kelly, the Founding Director of The Actors Workshop of South Florida, which is going into its tenth year. A professional actress since the age of 9, Kelly is a proud member of British, American and Australian Actors Equity. She appeared on London’s West End before moving to Los Angeles where she appeared in film, television and on stage. Kelly has directed Social Security, Barefoot in the Park, Crossing Delancy and The Supporting Cast. Sister George features Merry Jo Cortada (Sisters Rosensweig, 11 O’ Clock Number, Mexico City), Hampstead Stage Member Andi Maria Morrow (The Secret Garden, Great Expectations), Clelia Myers and Janet Weakly. The Killing of Sister George will be performed at Rising Action Theatre’s new space on the Sunshine Cathedral campus, 1480 SW Ninth Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, 33315. The play runs from Jan 14- Feb 13, 2011. Performances are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM and Sunday evenings at 7PM. Tickets available at www.risingactiontheatre.tix.com or by calling 1-800-5954849 or 954 561-2225. Tickets are $29.95. Dinner and Show Packages are $55.

With honesty and elegance, Portia de Rossi explores her struggles with eating disorders and identity in Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain. As a teen model, she was encouraged by mentors to begin vomiting before shoots; a decade later, while working on Ally McBeal and Arrested Development, her bulimia had become fueled by terror that the press would ‘out’ her. She also shows us the searing details of a control-fueled illness. de Rossi charts her empowering journey, emerging as an activist for gay rights and women’s health issues, and, of course, eventually living happily ever after with Ellen DeGeneres. ENERGY DRINKS: NOT THE DEVIL PART 2 The additive ingredients in caffeinated energy drinks are of particular concern. There are many “magic” ingredients intended to work synergistically with caffeine in many diet/energy pills and energy drinks. I frown upon many of those additive ingredients. They are dubious in their efficacy and lack research to support the safety of long-term consumption. Many energy drink companies do not disclose the specific dosages of multi-ingredient formulations, further clouding the attribution of which ingredient really complements caffeine. Taurine, in particular, has caused the French to get their panties in a bunch over its inclusion in Red Bull to the point where they reformulated it (replacing Taurine with Arginine) only to switch it back to the Taurine-containing, original formula. We have an abundant supply of Taurine in our muscles, heart and brain, as is, and its supplementation has demonstrated its antioxidant, fat breakdown and exercise-enhancing ability without hurting anyone. It’s been a victim of media hype but is certainly in need of further research. You can always try eating your cat’s food if you want, too. It’s loaded with Taurine since cats, unlike humans, cannot produce enough on their own. The inclusion of B-vitamins is fine. L-carnitine is just fine too (it won’t help you burn fat, but creatine will). Glucuronolactone, a purported detoxicant, has not been well researched since TVs had channel-changing knobs and gays, simply, just didn’t exist according to right-wing extremists. Nonetheless, moderate consumption of glucuronolactone has been proclaimed safe. There isn’t a particular ingredient to bite your nails over among mainstream energy drinks (energy drinks in Chinatown might be a differ-

ent story). You’d have to drink a ridiculous amount of energy drinks to ruin your day from additive ingredients. Think of these extra ingredients combined with caffeine as auxiliary ingredients, most of them not particularly needed. Regardless of my outlook of these extra ingredients, several research studies have observed benefits with minimal risks of energy drink consumption. Although their positive effects cannot be identified by which ingredient did what (caffeine is the reigning champion of the blend), you can confide in energy drinks (in moderation) if the taste is all right by you. Stay away from them if you’re pregnant, have heart issues, hypertension or suffer from psychiatric disorders (you’re crazy, you don’t need caffeine). Also, avoid energy drinks that do not indicate specific caffeine dosage and avoid mixing energy drinks with alcohol. I personally advocate coffee and green tea over energy drinks because they don’t have the artificial flavors or additive ingredients. Both provide an antioxidant benefit, especially green tea. Green tea has many benefits; from improving oral health to stress management, to genuinely boosting metabolism exclusive of caffeine content. Caffeinated energy drinks won’t kill you and they won’t make you commit crimes. So forget the media, your grandpa and your caffeine-hating friends. Go drink some caffeine and go through your day faster!

For many of us the Aqua image is associated with bikinis and beach parties. However, Aqua Girl is growing up, thriving as a major fundraiser for its beneficiary, the Aqua Foundation for Women (AFW), and - in turn transforming the LBT community. In fact, AFW has emerged as Florida’s leading funding catalyst for LBT wellness and equality, awarding $369,000 in grants and scholarships since 2004. As a result of Aqua Girl’s philanthropic contributions, along with a growing list of donors and members, AFW has expanded its geographical outreach across South Florida and created year-round programs which impact essential LBT needs: equality, education, health, empowerment, leadership, mentoring and cultural enrichment. “The Aqua Foundation for Women is an invaluable and integral part of the South Florida LGBT fabric,” says Steve Adkins, President and CEO of the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. “As the voice of LBT equality in our area, we rely on their leadership and focus to help direct our outreach and initiatives. AFW philanthropy has become a relied upon financial resource for many important local organizations and the fund directives ensure the advancement of LBT awareness in many crucial areas.” A core task for 2011 involves LBT women’s wellness. Health concerns are compounded for the LBT population because they will often delay or forgo medical assistance as a result of discrimination, mistreatment, or in some cases, ignorance on the part of medical professionals. AFW will actively address these concerns through a grant which will fund training for physical and mental health care professionals. The educational program calls for improved communications and best practices in servicing and caring for LBT women and a directory of qualified, sensitively aware professionals who could be recommended for referral. AFW will also spotlight unique community issues, including their sponsorship of the second annual Transcon conference. This year’s program will focus on legal issues. “The local and national transgender population lacks support and legislative traction,” says Robin Schwartz, Aqua Foundation for Women’s Executive Director. “AFW is doing its part to influence awareness and progressive change.” Another under-recognized area on the AFW radar in South Florida is LBT families, who sometimes lack substantive connections to other LBT families. “There’s a strong desire and need for these families to spend time with one another,” said Schwartz. “With this in mind, we will have a family bar-b-que in 2011.”

ONE OF OUR MAIN GOALS IS TO MENTOR YOUNG WOMEN AS LEADERS, ACTIVISTS AND ROLE MODELS FOR OUR COMMUNITY.”

AFW will still remain firmly focused on its hallmark scholarship and grants programs. In 2010, the foundation awarded $45,000 in scholarships to LBT women pursuing secondary and graduate degrees. “One of our main goals is to mentor young women as leaders, activists and role models for our community,” said Laura Steckler, AFW Chair. The 2011 Grants program will focus on LBT families, Youth empowerment and Transgender wellness and equality. Since AFW’s philanthropy is directly tied to donations and member drives, it’s all the more meaningful to support festivals like Aqua Girl and all the Foundation’s events. Fortunately, for the AFW and greater South Florida, more activities will be scheduled throughout the year. On schedule so far: a breakfast before the Miami Beach Pride parade, the return of Aqua Affair and events in Broward and Palm Beach counties. “AFW’s theme is Leading, Building and Transforming the LBT community in South Florida,” said Schwartz. ”We, the board and staff, will lead, but it’s all of us together – the entire community – that will determine how we build and transform.” To find out how you can be involved and for upcoming events, visit WWW.AQUAFOUNDATION.ORG.

¿Qué me preguntaran?

¿Qué me preguntarán?

SHE SCOPES

WITH THE VILLAGE SAGE

AQUARIUS JAN 20 - FEB 19 It’s more important than ever for you to do everything you can to keep your sense of balance, responsibility and humor. There are major changes occurring right now, whether you’re ready for them or not. Hopefully, you’ve spent quality time with yourself, dealt with your issues and are optimistic about the future. Otherwise, old, negative patterns and people will bully their way back into your life. That doesn’t include old projects with positive energy infused into it.

LEO JULY 23 - AUG 23 Turn lemons into lemonade and stress into productive energy to propel you out of difficult situations. Now is the time to escape the “have to’s” and replace them with “want to’s.” If you make the changes to your health and diet habits, you will feel an immediate positive impact in your life. Remember that the only person you have any control over is yourself. Don’t become responsible for others’ lack of control and subsequent situations.

PISCES FEB 20 - MAR 20 You want to take off running into the new year, yet you’re suddenly not sure what direction to take. Your goals, and the reasons behind them, have undergone some changes. Broaden your horizon and you’ll experience an energizing burst of hope and optimism from the new, the different and the totally unexpected. With these exciting opportunities can come over-the-top reactions. Make sure to balance fantasy with fact to get to the ‘possible.’

VIRGO AUG 24 - SEPT 23 You’re ready to stop the seriousness in your life and have a little fun. Your imagination has convinced you there’s hope for future successes, yet the Universe still is flying a caution flag over your plans. While you do need to be ready, willing and able to take the new opportunities that arise, you must be able to separate reality from fantasy. It’s time to leave old, negative patterns behind and embrace a healthier lifestyle.

ARIES MAR 21 - APR 19 You’ve been ‘on your mark’ for some time, and you’re finally at the ‘ready, set, GO! ‘stage. However, you will still have to handle your everyday tasks, so manage your time and resources carefully. Use your creativity to have fun while fulfilling responsibilities. Don’t let yourself get pushed into doing more than you can and don’t bite off more than you can chew. Do things your way, but don’t draw unwanted attention from the powers that be.

LIBRA SEPT 24 - OCT 23 Focus on strengthening the foundation of your security base. Your home and family must come first. Concentrate on completing tasks and doing some home improvement projects, rather than using your resources for fleeting returns. Avoid confrontations or impulsive, angry arguments. Instead choose your words carefully and do what you have to do in order to maintain balance and harmony. Satisfy your need for movement and adventure by exploring your own neighborhood and learning new things.

TAURUS APR 20 - MAY 20 The planets are empowering you to explore unexpected opportunities. Pursuing them will come with many challenges to your resolve. Make sure you’re confiding in a trusted advisor and not just making chitchat. In the end, you’ll have to rely on your own good judgment and common sense to guide you through past issues and current situations in order to reach your goals. Let your past be in the past. Embrace your hopes and dreams right now.

SCORPIO OCT 24 - NOV 22 Be open to exchanging plans in favor of better ones. Experiment with new ways and means to achieve your long-term goals and to enjoy your short-term tasks. Be your own person while practicing the art of compromise, which is not a sign of weakness. It is a mark of your personal growth. Another measure of growth is avoiding choices that didn’t work before. It’s time to use different strategies to achieve your goals.

GEMINI MAY 21 - JUN 21 The Universe is pushing you to release old habits that no longer have a positive effect in your life. That includes pipe dreams, non-productive people and jobs that barely pay your expenses. It’s time to get your financial house in order, especially how your personal situation impacts significant others. Practice an attitude of gratitude for what you do have and understand the value of being content with ‘enough.’ Once you have ‘enough,’ you will never want for anything.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21 Use your creativity to be innovative and practical in balancing what you have to do with what you want to do. Finances are definitely in need of some hands-on help in increasing cash flow and you’re in need of some more hands to help you get it all done. Don’t get frazzled or make impulsive investments. Instead, buy what you need. After all, you need to spend some in order to get some. Use your intuition..

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 All of your relationships will be shining a mirror on your interactions. This is truly a case of instant karma. If you’ve been above-board in your communications (even amidst differences of opinion) and you’ve conversed, compromised and cooperated, all will be well. However, if you’ve allowed yourself to snit in silence, you’ve feel worse than ever when you eventually lose your temper because others won’t understand it. Find your voice and talk things out.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 - JAN 19 You’ll face challenges in every aspect of your life, but especially in maintaining your balance. Everyone around you seems to be in dire need of your firm hand and calm leadership. Weigh impulses against reason and ask yourself how acting on those impulses will impact your longterm goals. You are the rock that everyone clings to, whether you want to be or not. Accept that and don’t get blown off course with your own emotional outbursts.
