While watching one of my favorite shows the other night, I saw this snippet of the upcoming news broadcast. “Plantation woman arrested for killing her longtime partner. Film at eleven.” I instantly thought, “Great. A murderous lesbian. That’s just what we need. Way to reflect on our community! I can almost imagine what they will say about us now.” It’s not the first time I had this thought. As a matter of fact, I realized that I have this exact same thought every time I see a murderous lesbian depicted in fiction crime shows, too. So, while this wasn’t a new thought for me, this time something different happened. I took a minute and tried to remember the last time I saw a story on the news about a murderous lesbian. While I was able to partially recall something about a criminal gay man, which I could not completely put together, I couldn’t really remember anything from the last few years that involved a gay woman. Then I realized how many other stories I’ve heard on the news in the last few months that involved straight men killing their wives, girlfriends or each other. Quickly doing the math in my head and calculating the ratio of hetero to homo murderers, I felt a little silly for having that first thought at all. Then I thought, “I wonder if heterosexuals ever watch the news and think, ‘Great. A murderous straight person. That’s just what we need. Way to reflect on our community. I can almost imagine what the gays will say about us now.’” No they don’t. But maybe they should. Based on my calculations, straight people are some murderous mofos. Now there’s another sidebar to this. Am I the only one who is annoyed and sort of offended by the use of the word, “Partner,” to depict our mates? We didn’t open a storefront— we started sleeping together! I have never heard a hetero couple referred to as “Partners.” Straight people have ‘girlfriends,’ ‘wives,’ ‘boyfriends,’ ‘husbands,’ ‘fiancés,’ ‘bootie calls.’ We have ‘partners’ or—wait for it—‘lovers.’ I don’t know about you, but after being pretend married for almost nine years, there ain’t a whole lot of ‘lovering’ going on. Anyway, that misrepresentation of a gay relationship title, “Partner,” just really aggravates me, almost as much as when a really hot straight woman uses the term, “Girlfriend,” about the equally straight lady friend she gets pedicures with every other Tuesday. I don’t care if you’re from the Midwest—it’s a disappointing misrepresentation. Stop saying it! So, let’s delve just a little deeper to fully reflect upon the confusion wrought by that term, “Partner.” Imagine this: I’m out to brunch with my co-publisher, Maria, at a restaurant where I frequent and have become friendly with a few of the waitresses. I say to one of them, “This is my partner, Maria—I mean my business partner, not my wife kinda partner. Okay, well she was my wife kinda partner. But that was years ago. Now she’s my business partner. Well she was my business partner while she was my wife kinda partner, too. But now she’s just my business partner.” [Insert really odd looks from both waitress friend and ex-wife kinda partner/still business partner] “Oh, and she’s my really good friend, because we lesbians tend stay close friends with our exes instead of killing them.” See you next month.

in the news glsen gets ready to celebrate the 19th annual day of silence on april 11th to fight discrimination and bullying in schools Hundreds of thousands of students at thousands of schools are expected to participate in GLSEN’s 19th Annual Day of Silence on Friday, April 11 by taking a vow of silence to draw attention to the anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) harassment and discrimination in schools. “The Day of Silence has grown into one of the largest student-led actions in the world because of students’ determination to directly address the pervasive issue of anti-LGBT behavior and bias in our schools,” said Dr. Eliza Byard, GLSEN’s Executive Director. “GLSEN is once again proud to stand behind these courageous students and their right to receive an education without the harmful disruptions of anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and discrimination.” Founded in 1996, the Day of Silence has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. From the first-ever Day of Silence at the University of Virginia in 1996, to the organizing efforts in over 8,000 middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities across the country in 2008, its textured history reflects its diversity in both numbers and reach. Anyone can organize a Day of Silence ac-

tivity or event, and it can be a powerful way to band together and take a stand. Learn more about how to register, organize, what your rights are, and what to do if those rights aren’t being respected.

“The Day of Silence raises important awareness about bullying in schools,” said Chase Stein, a 17-year-old high school student from Beverly Hills, Michigan. “All students-including myself - deserve to feel safe in school. Four out of 5 LGBT students reported being harassed at school in the past year because of their sexual orientation, and more than 31% report missing at least a day of school out of fear for their personal safety. For more information on getting involved, visit www.dayofsilence.org

what he said about... “The discriminatory ban is untrue to Michigan’s–and America’s–values, and the judge was right to strike it down. It’s time that all committed couples in Michigan be treated with respect and dignity under the law, fully able to share in the freedom to marry and the responsibilities and protections marriage brings. Today’s win comes after a full trial- complete with prosecutors and defendants, witness cross-examinations, and testimony from family experts on the well-being of children- which showed that opponents have nothing more than the same bogus claims they have recycled for decades. They were simply unable to provide a single legitimate reason why committed same-sex couples should be excluded from marriage. Michigan, like all of America, is ready for the freedom to marry.” —Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry on March 21, 2014 after Michigan Ban on Marriage for Gay Couples Ruled Unconstitutional.

GAY PRESS SPENDING SETS RECORD AT WHAT 381.4 MILLION IN 2013 WHERE Rivendell Media recently released its popular, annual Gay Press Report to reveal that spending in America’s “Gay Press” for 2013 is at a record high of $381.4 million, up 18.2% from 2012 and showing that LGBT community media is as strong as ever. Spending and circulation in LGBT print media is up for 2013--bucking the trends in the mainstream press. Actual spending is up just over 18% from 2012 to $381.4 million making a new all-time high. Circulation and readership of LGBT media is also up a healthy 15.1%. “What a nice surprise to see both sales and circulation up by double digits” says Todd Evans, President and CEO of Rivendell Media. The LGBT print media once thought to be recession proof, was significantly affected by the recession and advertising showed wide swings from its previous high in 2009 of $349.6 million. Rivendell Media, the leading media representation firm for most LGBT publications in the US, reports that spending for 2014 should continue its growth based on impressive first-quarter sales for print advertising. “Print media remains an important part of the toolkit for any company trying to reach the diverse LGBT community,” said Tracy Baim, publisher of Windy City Times in Chicago. “This report shows that regional LGBT print media are especially key to national advertising campaigns. The LGBT community is among the most loyal of consumers, and they pay attention to brands that are creative and inclusive in their marketing efforts. It’s no longer good enough to say you have achieved a 100% ranking on LGBT issues. Brands need to dedicate marketing dollars to this niche, to fully communicate their diversity goals and to see a return on investment.” “America’s gay newspapers and publications so often are the heart of the LGBT community,” said Bob Witeck, President of Witeck Communications. “It is very encouraging to see the growth trends and resiliency of the community’s legacy press.” Since 1993, Bob Witeck has advised major corporations and marketers on strategies to connect with LGBT audiences and households.

If you think Laurel Holloman has been taking a big, long rest since The L Word aired its last episode on March 8, 2009, you are sadly mistaken! Right after her participation at The Dinah in Palm Springs this year, we got the chance to talk to her about what life has been like ten years after Showtime debuted (January 18, 2004) the iconic, globally successful, lesbian-driven show that changed TV. Ten years ago, The L Word was about to debut on Showtime. Do you remember what was going through your mind?

Wow! I can’t even remember. We had shot the pilot. I was moving into a new house, but I do remember that I was super proud of the pilot. I was very proud of the pilot and what we had. I was hoping the network would keep going with it. That much I remember! And it did! Does it blow your mind how loyal the fans are, even today?

eah, it is mind-blowing. I think it had a lot of so-

cial and political impact. It was a much needed show. To be embraced like that by the fans the way we were and to still have that support now is incredible, especially because the whole cast was multitalented. Some of us have gone on to music, to art, to other things and our fan base has stayed so completely loyal. That is so wonderful when you’re an artist. Were you at all worried about what life would be like after The L Word?

Not really. I wasn’t really worried about the “after” part because I’ve been acting since my early twenties and you just learn to roll with it all. I do remember feeling “I just don’t know if there will ever be another show for me, with a role that I would be so proud of and so emotionally connected to.” For me, it would be like a death sentence to be on a show, like, about a cop. You know? Some role with a lot of jargon, and no substance and that’s the thing. What I loved about The L Word was that it was an emotionally based show, about

women, strong women. I just think that was the best thing. I mean, now there are wonderful new shows like Orange Is The New Black and House of Cards so I think TV has gotten much better over the last ten years. but TV has gotten better because of The L Word, for opening doors and paving the way for all this new, good stuff.

Yeah, I feel very much a part of that groundbreaking television and we were lucky to be part of that movement and hit mainstream where we weren’t some marginalized show. You guys were giving viewers a glimpse of a life they would otherwise know nothing about. I remember the episode where the characters all attended The Dinah, and Here it is ten years later, and you were back at The Dinah celebrating the 10th Anniversary of The L Word, with former cast mates Leisha Hailey and Kate Moennig! That’s pretty cool!

It’s always an intense, fun and busy event. I’m such a laid back person, so I just go with

the flow, but it was really fun seeing the girls again. I mean, fortunately, I run into different people at different things and I’m always so happy to see them, like I stayed in touch with [writers and directors] Angela [Robinson] and Alex [Kondrake] and Rachel Shelly (“Helena”). I talk a lot and I run into Erin Daniels (“Dana Fairbanks”) and Sarah Shahi (“Carmen”) and it’s always like family time in that here’s a group of women that I spent so much time with, and we did something so special together that had such a profound impact. You score gold when you get that! You did something really special at the Dinah Pool Party this year with your painting and prints. Can you talk about that? Oh, and a little about your piece, Written On The Body, because it’s so stunning!

I didn’t do the exact same thing as Leisha and Kate were doing at The Dinah. Last year, I did a project that got accepted into the 2013 La Biennale Di Venezia, in Venice, Italy, which is like the top of the art world for an artist. It’s extraordinary, and earlier, I was offered a sponsorship from an Italian art foundation. It’s been a huge, incredible, intense couple of years of really hard work for me. Written on The Body was something I had been playing around with recently in my studio. I had put a model in front of a big mural and, like, painted her into the mural and then shot it. It’s for an exhibition I hope to do later this year. But, for The Dinah, I brought some signed Biennale posters to show what I’ve been up to. I’m so highly immersed in the art world right now. It’s totally become my career and I was so happy to share that. It’s nice to revisit the fan base and show them what I’ve been up to. It was exciting to see everyone and be a part of it again. I was fortunate enough to see a picture from Written On The Body and it’s beautiful! I immediately wanted it for my living room, right over my sofa on a big, blank wall!

(laughs) Oh, my God, how great! With that piece, I wanted something that incorporated a lot of what I do. I’m not much of a figurative painter. I’m more of an abstract, large scale artist. Some of my paintings are up to 14 feet high. I’m on ladders and scaffolding all day and I’ve wanted to do something that got immediate results. Also, I wanted to work with models. Some of the stuff came out really powerful and emotional—such a celebration of being female and the female body. I felt like “Wow, okay! This is cool.” How it all came

together—a combination of large abstract painting, body paint, the shoot, the model—it was really special. You have totally become a globetrotting artist, traveling the world with your work. Tell us a little about how that came about. Were you always interested in being a painter?

I was an undergraduate art major. It was something I always wanted to do, but I was also studying theatre and pretty quickly I got cast in The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls In Love and it went to Sundance. Once you’re a lead in a movie at Sundance, you get a lot of offers and work. So every time I had set up

a little studio to begin painting, I was off on another acting job…I was really lucky in the film world. It came really quickly for me. But something happened to me for those six years on The L Word. During the hiatus periods, six months at a time, I didn’t want to be on another set. I found myself painting during my time off. I became very interested in design and art and it kept going. So when the show ended, I knew that I was going to paint full time. I think something happens, as a woman, when you get older, you think more about what you want the next chapter of your life to be like. For me, I really wanted to express myself differently with my art. I wanted two things to happen. I wanted to be in control of my creativity from beginning

with me in London and Italy at shows, and they’re traveling the world, which is just crazy because I’m like, “Oh my God, I didn’t even leave this country until I was so much older!” But, to them it’s normal. They’ve been on sets during filming, they’re at the installations for the art shows, they go off and make a ‘camp’ in the corner of these construction sites while workers are setting up. It’s just so completely normal to them. You’ve completely succeeded at totally reinventing and introducing yourself to the world as something completely different than how they knew you in just a few short years. That’s quite an accomplishment.

to end, meaning if I create a painting, I can play the music I want, I can pick the colors I want, create the emotion I want, I can express exactly what I want from beginning to end. That’s super hard to do in film because everyone is doing something on the project. That’s not a bad thing because that collaboration can create some beautiful work. I wanted to be able to paint something and get that emotion out right away. I didn’t have to wait for the pilot to be picked up; I didn’t have to wait to see what it was like after it was edited. I wanted the immediacy. That’s what I love. I’ve always been jealous of musicians because they can do that. Leisha can sit in her living room and write a song, and that’s amazing to me. I’ve always loved that feeling. It’s a loner thing. There’s such a rush to it, getting that emotion out and creating something from it. Hearing you talk about it and having seen some of your work, I can only imagine that you’ve actually brought a touch of a class to The Dinah, in a way that’s not ever been done!

Well, maybe (laughs). It was fun seeing a few drunk girls interpret abstract art (laughs). You know, I’m so laid back and The Dinah is always fun. I am so grateful for our fan base, really, and I’m always like, “Hey, if there’s something fun out there and it fits my crazy schedule, I’m happy to come do it!” I’m really proud of what I’m doing and I loved sharing it with them. Art

is my passion and career right now and it’s so rewarding in every way—financially and because it allows me to spend time with my daughters and take them on my travels. I’m a single Mom now, so those things are really important to me. Are you seeing any creative artist traits in them?

Very much! They’re nine and five right now. The older one is really artistic. She makes little movies on our iPad and they are so detailed! She’s really good, really artistic! My younger one is like how I was as a child. She’s a full tilt tomboy, very athletic and fearless, like I was at that age. Do you ever wonder if, later on, as your girls get older, they’ll ask you about your roles in The L Word or Two Girls and what you’ll say?

My nine year old does! I mean, kind of, if someone stops me for an autograph, which happens every now and then, she’ll say, “Oh, that was someone who knows you from The L Word,” and lately it’s been mostly teenagers who ask, so that makes me pretty cool. You know, to a nine year old, teenagers are totally cool. I think I’ll be really proud to show them what I’ve done. For my oldest, it’ll be interesting and cool because I was pregnant with her in one of The L Word seasons. But mostly, right now, they’re like “Oh, that TV thing, whatever.” They just take it in stride. I mean, they’ve been

I am really proud of this chapter, in the same way I was proud of The L Word. It’s an absolute blessing to be able to do what you love for a living and I’m grateful for the support of fans and art lovers all over the world. The past few years have had the most amazing high points, from being invited to the 55th Biennale and all the prestige that holds, to selling Let Me Fall in Paris for 125,000 Euros, a record-breaking price point for any female painter. It’s such a super exciting thing that’s happening. It is, for all of us too. We the fans are still getting to know all of you and become exposed to your different talents. It’s a way for us to, more or less, stay in touch with the ladies we fell in love with. What can we look forward to in the rest of 2014?

Right now I’m in the process of moving into a larger studio in the art district in Culver City. Because my shows are booked out a year in advance, plus I do such large-scale projects that take a while, I’m hoping to have some smaller pieces soon. We’ll see how that unfolds while I’m waiting on some things to come together that can be “officially” announced. I don’t want to jinx anything. But, all the info on my work and the shows is available on LaurelHolloman.net, plus films. We did some small films of some of the shows and there’s even a Facebook page for Laurel Holloman Studios. Of course, I’m hoping to get back to Europe again. Berlin is really becoming the cutting edge of the art world now. As things get locked in, they’ll be announced and I’m always keeping everyone up on new things through Twitter, too. I’m still @NalaMommy, haven’t changed the name. Social media is really changing the face of a lot of things and how we all communicate with each other. It’s great! We’re so following!

Sarah Kate (left) with wife Kristen, their son Thomas and daughter Kate on October 22, 2011 in New York.

A Woman in Power

“Already a supporter of GLAAD, the transition from her interest in the position of president to actually taking on the leadership role was ‘a natural evolution.’” This January GLAAD welcomed a powerful woman as their new CEO and president. Carefully selected for this leadership role, Sarah Kate Ellis has effectively focused her passion, education and experience as an openly gay media executive, groundbreaking author, role model, community leader, loving wife and caring mother. Her ideal background combined with personal involvement and commitment to cultural change made Ellis the perfect fit for a leadership role at GLAAD, the nation’s leading LGBT media advocacy organization. Don’t hesitate to jump online and check out her LinkedIn profile for her qualifications. Prior to Ellis, the other female president at GLAAD was Joan Garry, who served for nearly a decade and retired in 2005. “When this opportunity came up, it almost seemed like my universe was leading me there,” said Ellis in a recent interview with She Magazine. Everything that she had been working on and building toward seemed to point to this unique opportunity to lead “such an amazing organization that does such good work.”

Inspired by the women’s movements and outspoken as an advocate for LGBT issues, Ellis appeared on the historical “Gay Marriage Already Won” cover of Time Magazine with her wife, musician and Antigone Rising’s lead singer, Kristen Ellis-Henderson. They married on October 22, 2011 in New York. Their co-authored memoir, Times Two: Two Women in Love and the Happy Family They Made, told the story of their simultaneous pregnancies and the expansion of their family, with the close births of their son Thomas and daughter Kate. They both turned five this past February. Ellis draws strength from her family’s love and support. “Family is the reason that I took the job because I couldn’t imagine my kids growing up in a world without GLAAD,” she said. With supportive parents, the couple is able to balance demanding and thriving careers and still maintain a quality family life. Her commitment to LGBT advocacy is rooted in family values. “My mother has always been a woman who taught me to have a strong point of view and to stick by my convictions,” said Ellis. Before joining GLAAD, Ellis reached out to the organization to help prepare for the couple’s book tour. GLAAD helped shape their story so it would be compelling and help accelerate the movement. “We couldn’t have done it without GLAAD. We didn’t know enough,” said Ellis. This was a positive experience and a first-hand glimpse into the effectiveness of the organization. Before her role as a media watchdog and equality symbol, Ellis was actively involved with media outlets including Vogue, InStyle, New York, House & Garden and Time Inc. Having acquired impactful and effective communication strategies, she knows the importance of accuracy in reporting. Her media background gives her the insight and the knowledge to influence positive change and forward movement. Already a supporter of GLAAD, the transition from her interest in the position of president to actually taking on the leadership role was “a natural evolution.” As media networks become more impactful, as images convey everything in a glance and the reach of each message is given endless life through social media, causes, organizations and businesses are all seeking engagement. GLAAD isn’t just a media watchdog; they encourage dialogue. GLAAD’s role not only includes keeping the media honest,

“In everyone’s life there comes a moment where you can stand up or you can get out of the way. I think our generation stands up and I hope that we continue that. I think we are making the world a much better place for generations to come.

but ensuring the “right stories are being told the right way and in the right places, so that it helps move the culture forward,” said Ellis. Since January, Ellis has enthusiastically embraced the rigorous role as president of GLAAD. It is “phenomenal to wake up with such purpose every day.” She explains that the work at GLAAD is either incredibly visible or invisible, but that GLAAD still affects lives on a constant basis. “You have good days and you have bad days and the good days are really exciting.” She outlines two strategies for GLAAD’s progression. “Arizona is proof that there is so much more work to be done. The southern part of our country is a place that needs some cultural work, so that when the policy work gets put through, there’s the support of the community in the culture,” said Ellis. GLAAD has a global footprint and LGBT leaders around the world are reaching out to them in order to get assistance in emulating a culturally appropriate version of GLAAD “There is both domestically and globally so much that needs to be done. What we are preparing to do from an international standpoint is to take the best practices and educate them for incorporation into their own culture,” said Ellis. The large majority of GLAAD’s work is culture-changing. GLAAD has a team dedicated to involvement in the LGBT Hispanic community. GLAAD is also a huge resource for the transgender community and their new presence in mainstream media. “In a lot of ways, I feel the transgender community is where the gay community was 20 years ago, starting to make that break into mass media,” said Ellis. “It must be handled properly and it is a delicate situation.” Ellis speaks about a “tipping point” in equality in the workplace and the need for an awareness campaign. According to her, employers can also refuse to hire people based on the fact that they are LGBT. Ellis offers advice to those interested in leadership and effecting cultural change. “When you are emerging on the movement, make sure you are looking at the cultural work and changing hearts and minds because that will help any community move forward. When you know somebody and can relate to them, it impacts the culture,” she said. Sarah Kate and her family encourage engagement and endorse equality, with Ellis concluding, “In everyone’s life, there comes a moment where you can stand up or you can get out of the way. I think our generation stands up and I hope that we continue that. I think we are making the world a much better place for generations to come.” SHE - 27 - 04/14

scopes AQUARIUS JAN 21 - FEB 19 Your popularity and generosity are legendary. It is your genuine pleasure to share the wealth and provide for your loved ones. By midmonth you’ll be craving more quality time with yourself in order to process the current report from your interior, thanks to the retrogrades. Now is the time for a-ha moments to bring positive changes.

leo July 23 - aug 22 The planets are conspiring to force you out of whatever rut you find yourself in and into your action figure self that can turn your wildest fantasy into doable reality. You’ll need a creative, yet practical plan to get from here to there. You probably should buckle up for the ride, with lots of twists and turns that may be pretty scary. However, your natural courage will see you through the rough patches.

pisces feb 20 - mar 20 Your focus is on improving your relationship with money, as well as how your financial situation affects your self-esteem. The planets are sending healing energy your way, along with friends and family who want you to succeed in whatever you try. The challenge for you is to change old, unhealthy, self-sabotaging behavior into positive budgeting, saving and spending habits.

virgo aug 23 - sept 23 There’s good news and bad news. The good news is that the turbulent waters of your personal life are finally subsiding into calm seas of romantic fantasies. The bad news is that your finances are still under attack. Unresolved financial issues from the past are still unresolved and threatening your current situation. You must stay focused on creating and keeping a strict budget in order to stay afloat.

aries mar 21 - apr 20 You’ll have sudden power surges. Just don’t allow the aggressive energy from the planets to throw you into a power struggle. Spectacular ideas require logical plans to implement them, as well as a flexible, can do attitude. Use your excess energy playing, dancing, swimming, making love, not war. Use your creativity to be both responsible, and independent.

libra sept 24 - oct 23 You must do your best to stay in balance, no matter what outside influences try to create angry reactions. Seek positive new beginnings; make necessary adjustments to improve your current situation. Avoid impulsive words and/or deeds that might unsettle the foundation and security of your life. Channel aggressive energy into physically healthy activities like sex and rock n roll.

taurus apr 21 - may 21 You’ll be dealing with your karma and you’ll be challenged on every front to avoid responding to past issues in ways that were already proven ineffective. Old negative patterns, habits and attitudes will not serve you; don’t give yourself permission to lower your horns and charge. Weigh your choices carefully, don’t risk your security impulsively and put your energy into making positive changes.

scorpio oct 24 - nov 22 Frustration with your current situation can and will erupt into angry confrontations that will further undermine your security, unless you make every effort to control the rage. While it is good for you to share your thoughts and feelings, you will realize more benefits if you really listen to the responses of the significant others involved. Avoid arguing over the past. Plan for the future instead.

gemini may 22 - june 21 Both your twins need to be in agreement about your cash priorities. You need to be realistic about your current cash flow and your future projections. You’ll also need to be able to deal with sudden challenges to your best-laid plans. It is critical to exercise both impulse control, as well as temper control, because giving yourself permission to act out will seriously undermine your security.

sagittarius nov 23 - dec 21 You may find yourself in the same place, but your attitude has changed to a more cando, problem solving one. You’re ready to shake the status quo, rattle the complacency from all involved and roll onwards and upwards to a better quality of life. Just don’t make risky, impulsive decisions and don’t spend what you don’t have to. Play it safe with love and practical with money.

cancer June 22 - july 22 You’re feeling restless, ready to explore and conquer, impatient with your current situation and frustrated with all the failed attempts to change it. That being said, it is imperative that you avoid aggressive, impulsive behavior that can unsettle your security base. Instead, remain cool, calm and collected. You will be rewarded with everything you’ve wished for and more.

capricorn dec 22 - jan 20 It’s a good thing you love a good challenge because you’ll have more than enough of them in every area of your life, including past home and family issues and present financial and work related ones. Be careful not to allow power struggles, and subversive tactics to undermine your achievements, nor to allow your temper to leave scorched earth behind. Weather the planets.
