I’m a firm believer that fear is the number one killer of lives in this world. All the things we really need to live a happy and successful life are the things we fear the most. We’re afraid to fall in love because we might get hurt. We’re scared of taking risks because we might fail. But mostly, we are afraid to really be honest. Did you know that studies have shown that people who do not lie suffer from less stress then those who do? My business partner has this bad habit of sneak-sending me emails telling me what I should say in my Editor’s Note. I’ll double-click on a reply she sent to something like, “Hey. I wanna go to lunch on Wednesday,” and see, “I can’t do lunch. Meeting with a client. Make sure you say something about the Tabatha interview in your Ed Note.” Not only does she know that I hate when people tell me what to write about, she also knows that 99 out of 100 times I will completely ignore them. I’ve told her time and time again that there is a reason why we have that page called “In This Issue.” I’m not a woman with a big tolerance for repetition. I know a lot of magazine editors do that. Truth be told, I don’t really have a problem with it if that’s what they want to do. I just think it’s redundant and doesn’t really show much depth as a writer. Wow, I can feel my blood pressure dropping a bit. This honesty thing is kind of cool. I’m not sure I understand why people are so afraid to just tell the truth. Sure, you’ll probably be called a b*tch if you tell someone that their constant need to be the center of attention is annoying. But hey, at least you will be an honest b*tch. I’d much rather be called a b*tch for being honest than be called a liar. And let’s face it: I have a taskoriented girlfriend with unaccepted ADD, three dogs, a 20 month-old baby who has just learned to say, “No,” and an assistant who openly mocks me on Facebook while she’s on the clock. Lord knows I could use a bit of de-stressing in my life. So, now you know why I use this page to just ramble on and tell you stories. It’s because I value being honest with you about my life and because I am doing my damndest to completely ignore my partner’s emails. See you next month.

in the news American Academy of Pediatrics: Marriage Equality is Good for Children On March 21st, the independent and non-partisan American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) announced their support for marriage for gay and lesbian couples for a simple reason: it’s good for children. The support is detailed in a policy statement titled, “Promoting the Well-Being of Children Whose Parents Are Gay or Lesbian.” After an extensive review of the academic literature on the subject the well-respected group said that marriage equality as well as adoption helps protect children’s right to maintain relationships with both parents, eligibility for health benefits and financial security. “This announcement is the latest in a chain of evidence stretching back years that clearly states marriage equality is good for children,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “As today’s announcement by the AAP underscores, marriage equality’s adversaries simply have no evidence to back up their absurd claims to the contrary.” Even the star expert witness opposed to marriage equality in the Proposition 8 trial, David Blankenhorn, admitted that equal marriage is undeniably good for the children of gay and lesbian couples. In 2010, he testified under oath that, “adopting same-sex marriage would be likely to improve the well-being of gay and lesbian households and their children.” He has since fully embraced marriage equality. ACLU of Florida launches Hispanic LGBT video project: “Amores de mi Vida” The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Florida has launched “Amores de mi Vida” (Loves of my Life), a Spanish-language audiovisual project that celebrates love and the LGBT community. The project, created in collaboration with The Miami Foundation, invites Hispanic individuals, family, friends or supporters, to share their stories on video, in order to integrate all the Hispanic community, highlighting family values, respect, faith, and opposition to discrimination. Three members of the LGBT Hispanic community in Miami have already shared videos of their stories for the project. Extensive data available from more than 30 years of research reveal that children raised by gay and lesbian parents have demonstrated resilience with regard to social, psychological, and sexual health despite economic and legal disparities and social stigma. Many studies have demonstrated that children’s well-being is affected much more by their relationships with their parents, their parents’ sense of competence and security, and the presence of social and economic support for the family than by the gender or the sexual orientation of their parents.”

Sousa-Rodriguez, co-director of GetEqual, an undocumented young gay man from Brazil whose partner is a legal resident of the U.S., and Juan Del Hierro, a gay man from Ecuador and licensed Unity teacher who recently adopted a son. The ACLU of Florida will host a screening of videos collected in the Amores project in Fall of 2013 at a local theater in Miami-Dade. Though the project is focused on those in Miami-Dade, all LGBT individuals, their families and supporters are invited to participate by sending your videos until July 31, 2013. what She said about... “I am today an out lesbian, ok, who just sued the United States of America which is kind of overwhelming for me. When my beautiful and sparkling Thea died 4 years ago I was overcome with grief. In the midst of my grief I realized that the Federal government was treating us as strangers, and I paid a humongous state tax, and it meant selling a lot of stuff to do it, and it wasn’t easy...Today is like an spectacular day for me, it’s a lifetime kind of event and I know that the spirit of my late spouse, Thea Spyer, is right here watching and listening and would be very proud and happy of where we’ve come to...I thought that Justices were direct, they asked all the right questions...I felt we were very respected and I think it’s going to be good (laughs).” —Edith Windsor, who filed the original case that could upend the Defense of Marriage Act, outside the Supreme Court on Wednesday, March 27th in Washington, D.C.

what they said about... Justice Sonia Sotomayor: “...outside of the marriage context, can you think of any other rational basis, reason, for a State using sexual orientation as a factor in denying homosexuals benefits or imposing burdens on them? Is there any other rational decision-making that the Government could make? Denying them a job, not granting them benefits of some sort, any other decision?” CHARLES J. COOPER, ESQ.: “Your Honor, I cannot. I do not have any -- anything to offer you in that regard.” -----------------------------------------------------------Justice Kennedy: “...There are some 40,000 children in California, according to the Red Brief, that live with same-sex parents, and they want their parents to have full recognition and full status. The voice of those children is important in this case, don’t you think?” -----------------------------------------------------------JUSTICE BREYER: “What precisely is the way in which allowing gay couples to marry would interfere with the vision of marriage as procreation of children that allowing sterile couples of different sexes to marry would not? I mean, there are lots of people who get married who can’t have children. To take a State that does allow adoption and say -- there, what is the justification for saying no gay marriage? Certainly not the one you said, is it?” MR. COOPER: “You’re -JUSTICE” justice BREYER: “Am I not clear? Look, you said that the problem is marriage; that it is an institution that furthers procreation.” MR. COOPER: “Yes, Your Honor.” JUSTICE BREYER: “...Now, what happens to your argument about the institution of marriage as a tool towards procreation? Given the fact that, in California, too, couples that aren’t gay but can’t have children get married all the time.” MR. COOPER: “Yes, Your Honor. The concern is that redefining marriage as a genderless institution will sever its abiding connection to its historic traditional procreative purposes, and it will refocus, refocus the purpose of marriage and the definition of marriage away from the raising of children and to the emotional needs and desires of adults...” -----------------------------------------------------justice alito: ...”The one thing that the parties in this case seem to agree on is that marriage is very important. It’s thought to be a fundamental building block of society and its preservation essential for the preservation of society. Traditional marriage has been around for thousands of years. Same-sex marriage is very new. I think it was first adopted in The Netherlands in 2000. So there isn’t a lot of data about its effect. And it may turn out to be a -- a good thing; it may turn out not to be a good thing, as the supporters of Proposition 8 apparently believe. But you want us to step in and render a decision based on an assessment of the effects of this institution which is newer than cell phones or the Internet?...” -----------------------------------------------------CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: “...it seems to me that your position that you are supporting is somewhat internally inconsistent. We see the argument made that there is no problem with extending marriage to same-sex couples because children raised by same-sex couples are doing just fine and there is no evidence that they are being harmed. And the other argument is Proposition 8 harms children by not allowing same-sex couples to marriage. Which is it?” GENERAL VERRILLI, Jr., esq: “Well, I -- I think what Proposition 8 does is deny the longterm stabilizing effect that marriage brings.” —Some key moments in the Proposition 8 oral arguments before the Supreme Court on Tuesday, March 26th in Washington, D.C. did you miss an issue? read our free digital archives at www.shemag.com

Tabatha Coffey has devoted her professional life to achieving excellence as a successful business woman, company owner, hair designer and educator. Drawing on her years of hands-on experience, Tabatha now travels the country helping struggling business owners turn things around for the fifth season of Bravo’s Tabatha Takes Over. With her signature edgy style, tough love approach and exceptional skills as an artist and as a business person, Tabatha’s professional instincts transcend the realm of beauty and give owners and staff the tools they need to create successful businesses. We recently spoke to Tabatha about her 5th season, which just premiered on April 4th. Growing up in Australia, you spent much of your time around strip clubs and drag queens. How did that contribute to your sense of self and the woman you have become?

My parents owned drag queen strip clubs in Australia, and it was a very colorful world filled with creative and interesting people. When I was young I had the opportunity to be backstage helping them create their looks. They all had stories to tell. I talk about it quite a bit in my book It’s Not Really About The Hair. The performers always looked fabulous and insisted on doing their own thing, nomatter what the cost. That helped make me a stronger and more unique person aswell. You have said that the time you spent with drag queens lent itself to your style as a hairdresser. How so?

The drag queens were fearless in trying new things and really cultivated their personalities through their look. They taught me the relationship between inner and outer beauty and the powerful impact that looking the way you want to look on the outside has on how you feel on the inside.

I saw that you now have your own line of wigs and extensions by Luxhaircalled “How.” What was behind your decision to launch this new product line?

I have plans to launch several lines and started with hairpieces because they canreally transform how someone looks and feels instantaneously. I also wanted womento be able to have the hair they always wanted or be able to change their lookwithout the commitment. So many women suffer from thinning hair and feelembarrassed by it, and I wanted to give them secret weapons to always looking andfeeling fabulous. With so many wig lines out there, what do you feel separates your line from the pack?

The quality of my exclusive KeralonTMfiber is phenomenal. It looks, feels andresponds like real hair – in some cases even better than real hair. The styles aremodern and playful and all designed by me. The color selection is vast to ensurethat everyone out there can blend to their pre-existing color, and each shade is multitonal for natural results. Like everything I do I worked hard on this to give womenthe hair they have always dreamed of but never been able to achieve before. I noticed from your Twitter post that you are a fan of “Shark Tank.” What is it about that show that has made you a fan?

I am a businesswoman and entrepreneur, so I love seeing people with a dream tryingto realize it. I enjoy the sharks’ tough love wisdom. It’s not unlike what Idispense on my show Tabatha Takes Over. Not that you have a whole lot of time to sit around watching TV, but what are some other shows that can claim you as a fan?

Of course I am a Bravo junkie, but I also can’t resist a good Law and Order marathon. I am mildly obsessed with American Horror Story. You’re also very passionate about fashion. Who are some

SHE - 16 - 04/13

of your favorite designers for this spring and why?

I will always love Alexander McQueen. He is my go-to designer. The clothes just fit my build and personality. I also love Rag and Bone, J Brand, Helmut Lang and Alexander Wang. It’s a long list – what I look for beyond black, of course, is great workmanship and clothes that are easy to wear, mix and match and make me feel good. The reach of the show has expanded with, as of last season, you taking over more than just salons. How did that idea come about?

A lot of my approach to turning around a business and my tenets of success areuniversally applicable. I had a diverse range of business owners reaching out to mesaying, “Please take over my auto mechanic garage or my café or my doctor’soffice.” So it made sense to offer help to those businesses as well. Once you’ve done a job it becomes easy to notice every little detail of someone else doing it. Now that you’ve begun taking over so many other kinds of businesses, are you able to just go to a corner shop for a sandwich without noticing everything they are doing wrong?

I always notice, and I always have. When I offer feedback it’s interesting to see howthe owner or manager takes it. In that same vein, has there been an occasion where you went into a shop of some kind and saw employees fear struck, thinking you were there to take over?

Yes. It happens all the time. The quality of my customer experiences has improveddramatically for the most part—unless they become paralyzed with fear. This season’s sneak peek showed you face-to-face with your drag doppelganger. Given your history and knowledge of drag’s homage to icons, how did you feel when you saw her?

Morgan and I are long-time friends, and I have been to her shows before. I think it isa great compliment. And if I have to call out sick, I know whom to call! Season 5 of a hit show, how does that feel?

Very rewarding and I am very grateful. What is it about this season of Tabatha Takes Over that has you most excited?

I never like to watch myself, but I always love to engage with my supporters on “date night.” I was back on Facebook and Twitter watching with the fans on premiere night, April 4, and again each Thursday during the season. Please follow along with me on my Twitter (@TabathaCoffey) or Facebook page. Tabatha Takes Over airs on Bravo every Thursday at 10pm/ET

“gay marriage already won”

time magazine goes gay again and we love it!

As the Supreme Court hears arguments on pivotal same-sex marriage cases, legendary TIME magazine released two separate covers on March 29th— “Gay Marriage Already Won.” — each featuring an intimate portrait of a committed gay couple: one male, one female. Celebrating its 90 years in the publishing business, TIME Managing Editor Rick Stengel writes, “Whatever the Supreme Court decides, it seems clear that the majority of Americans feel marriage is a civil right and that denying that right to people because of their sexual orientation is a violation of equal protection under the law…. We had a long debate in our offices about this week’s cover images of two same-sex couples. Some thought they were sensationalist and too in-your-face. Others felt the images were beautiful and symbolized the love that is at the heart of the idea of marriage. I agree with the latter, and I hope you do too.” In his cover story, TIME’s David Von Drehle reports that recent polls show that same-sex marriage is now embraced by half or more of all Americans, with support among young voters running as high as 4-1. To illustrate David’s story, TIME invited same-sex couples in California and New York to share some intimate moments for photographer Peter Hapak. Sarah Kate,41, and Kristen Ellis-Henderson,42, (married in 2011) and Russell Hart, 31, and Eric LaBonté, 42, (engaged since 2010), are the couples featured on the split covers. In case one of the ladies’ names sounds familiar, Kristen Ellis-Henderson, is part of the all-female rock band Antigone Rising, which comes in handy as the band is releasing a new single, ”That Was The Whiskey.” Some of the couples who participated in the TIME cover shoot are married and all are in long-term committed relationships. “Dani Campbell is an American reality television participant who became notable in the lesbian community as a symbol of self-assurance...and the Miami Herald to declare her South Florida’s ‘most eligible lesbian.’ She was the runnerup in the first bisexual dating reality show, A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila and the final female contestant. Most recently she appeared in the third season of Kourtney and Kim Take Miami on the episode ‘Lez-B-Honest’, which aired January 27, “ that’s what Wikipedia.org says about Dani, 34. To me, she is still the very down-to-earth, respectful, polite and cool bartender I met years ago at a local bar regardless of how many thousands of fans she has, off and online. She still keeps her job and love as a firefighter/paramedic. We recently caught up with her as she gets ready to make appearances at Aqua Girl in Miami Beach and Girls in Wonderland in Orlando, FL. I think you are one of the very few “celesbians” who has maintained a great attitude and remained as friendly as you were before reality shows came into your life. How did you not let show business get to your head that way?

I always have been a fairly easy-going individual. It took practice growing up as a child to learn from life lessons on how to be happy and grateful for what I have, and I still learn everyday. My mother has also instilled in me to always be kind, so it’s just in my nature. I love that people come up to me and ask for pictures or simply express their feelings about the shows I have been on. If everyone could be so lucky as to have people like/love them, the world would be a better place. What’s the best thing that has come out of being in the spotlight for your personal and professional life?

For my personal life, it has shown me the power of being who you are and not who people want you to be. I was myself on Tila Tequila and The Kardashians, and people have been very receptive of this. I had one 55-year-old lady tell me she was married for 18 years with three kids until she saw me on Tila and had the courage to come out to her family. She said my confidence and attitude gave her the nudge she needed. I also speak at clubs and schools such as LGBT and GSA groups in high schools and colleges around the country and have had the opportunity to communicate with all walks of life. As far as how it has affected my professional life, I guess the best part about it is when I have a patient who is really sick, but then if they recognize me, it makes them smile and forget about the pain for a while. (Yes, this has actually happened. Maybe only once but that’s enough for me). How did you get to that comfortable spot to later being on TV and so open?

I wasn’t always comfortable being gay and out. It wasn’t until I was in my early 20’s that I told my mom I was gay, and it wasn’t “a phase” – as she and many SHE - 20 - 04/13

others like to call it. It took many years to become so comfortable with myself. I believe that people are going to like me for who I am, not what I am. you are a very driven person, always going for what you want. I understand you are back in college now.

I have always worked hard for what I want. I had started college before I decided to go to school to become a firefighter, so now I am just finishing where I left off. I am almost done with my bachelor’s degree in political science, but I am only able to take two classes at a time because of work, slowly but surely. What are the topics relating to our community that you are mainly concerned about?

I am currently finishing my bachelor’s degree in political science, so I am deeply concerned with politics. Florida, being a red state and where I reside, always has my attention. Until I was in a class called “Women and Politics” (Professor Holman, you are great.), I never really understood the term “feminism”: advocating social, political, legal and economic rights for women equal to those of men. I always thought of a feminist being an overly-aggressive lady wearing a bandana and boots with a hatred for “the man.” This now sounds so ignorant of me, but I always just thought of things being “good enough.” There are so many more inequalities for women and minority/gay ones especially. There have been so many brave women before us that have accomplished so much, but we are far from being equal. Our women need to become more involved in politics. A new found love for feminism coupled with being a gay woman has pushed me into all aspects of our community. Florida’s Broward County is very open and accepting of their LGBT employees. is that the case, at least within your division?

Broward County is predominantly Democratic, so they are a little more supportive

of gay rights. I say a little because it is still very unequal. I work for the Broward Sheriff Office Fire Rescue, and they do have policies in place for same-sex partners. I have never been outwardly discriminated against by my peers, and I feel that BSOFR is supportive of gay/lesbian rights. For the most part, the biggest problems are the federal laws. Going back to TV, when the opportunity for reality TV first came about back in 2007-08, was that something you talked over with your family, or was that not a concern for you?

When I was picked for the show, the only person I sat down with was my mother. I told her I wanted to take her to dinner to discuss some big news. When I explained to her that I was going to be on a reality TV show that was gay (That’s what I thought it was at first.), she was a little nervous. I think all parents get nervous for their children when they fear that their kids could be judged with cruelty for being “different.” Once she saw the show and how people reacted to it, I think it really helped her to understand more about being gay and more about me as well. Because, being gay doesn’t describe who you are. It’s just a small piece of you. My mother and I have grown even closer after the show. It did something for our relationship. As for the rest of the family, I just let them watch and learn [laughs] You had a good relationship with your grandmother, who passed away back in 2008. Do you see her reflected in your actions at times or perhaps little things here and there that now you realize you’ve learned from her?

My grandmother always used to use the expression “blah blahblah” and talked with her hands a lot. I do that all the time. I see a lot of her in my mom and aunt. Not sure so much myself. I just hope when I’m her age that I look as beautiful [laughs].

What do you think would bring her the most pride in the person you have become?

My grandmother was always proud of me. I’m sure she would be even more proud now knowing I am helping others by simply being myself. Before my grandmother passed, she received so much fan mail from her appearance on TV. I had posted on MySpace a blog about her losing her battle with cancer and that people could send letters to her in the hospital. I and other family members would sit and read to her all the letters that were sent. I would like to thank everyone who sent her something from the bottom of my heart. It made her so happy. Scott Disick, he obviously doesn’t have the best reputation from the Kardashians’ shows and his personal issues. I understand the guest spot on Kourtney and Kim Take Miami was a coincidence, and it actually gave some visibility to our community and our issues.

I was invited to a pool party at Chapman’s house by my friend Rachel Robinson. She just wanted a wingman. As the day progressed, Scott and I ended up bonding and forming a friendship. I never really sat down to watch The Kardashians before meeting them. They’ve been on TV for a long time, so of course I knew who they were and heard about some of the drama. As our friendship progressed, I saw that Scott is a really nice guy and is very easy to talk to. He’s hilarious actually. I now know he gets a lot of sh*t on the show, but, honestly, he is very sweet and genuine. He loves and cares for his family. It can be very tough always being in the spotlight. Since Scott and I have been friends, he has learned a lot about the gay community, stuff he never even thought about. I am always educating my hetero friends (“breeders” I call them) about gay rights.

Do you get the feeling that sometimes the networks do include the gay/lesbian theme because it is still a controversial topic and may generate extra publicity?

Whatever their reason, bring it on. The TilaTequila show did wonders for the gay community. People saw that an androgynous female could be a “normal” human being and be liked by all types of people. I have fans from all different countries sending me fan mail, straight, gay – all different ethnicities and beliefs. That show helped to educate in its own way I guess. Of course the networks are thinking about the revenue a show can generate, but it is not necessarily a bad thing. Because I am sure our readers want to know, is anyone lighting your fire now? Single? Taken? Looking?

I am single and ready to mingle! (I’m a dork.) What’s next for you in show biz and your career?

Who knows with show biz!I would love to do more, but I haven’t had the time with school and especially work. I love my job and would never want to lose it, so dedicating time for a show is difficult. I was only able to do the Tila show because I was out on injury. So, I guess it will have to be good timing again! SHE - 22 - 04/13

Celebrating its quince this year, the 15th anniversary Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival brings a new definition to the term “chick flick” by presenting more than 15 women’s interest films, ranging from documentaries to dramas and short films. The women’s films will be showcased at venues throughout Miami-Dade county during the festival’s run from April 26th to May 5th. One film in particular that caught the eye of Executive Director Franc Castro and the film selection committee is Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf?, a semi-autobiographical parody of the classic Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? from Miami-native Anna Margarita Albelo. “The film is in post-production, but I wanted to give audiences in Miami the opportunity to have a sneak preview because this film is so fantastic,” Castro said. “The filmmaker has gathered an unbelievable cast, including Carrie Preston, Guinevere Turner and Janina Gavankar (aka Papi from The L Word), and we are thrilled to have this film at the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.”

Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf?, which will be showcased as a workin-progress, opens with the main character, Anna, played by the director herself, the day after her 40th birthday. Once an adventurous jet setter and carefree bohemian, she now lives in her friend’s garage with a stalled career, and, if that isn’t bad enough, it’s been ten years since she’s had a girlfriend. The hardscrabble life that seemed charming and brave in her twenties now seems desperate and dire in middle age. She’s stuck and quickly losing hope in life – something has to change. When she meets art school wunderkind Katia, played by JaninaGavankar, it does. Anna devises a plan to make her long held dreams come true: make a film, find love and lose 20 pounds. Director Anna Margarita Albelo, a Cuban-American Miami-native, is an award-winning filmmaker, journalist and cultural activist. L.A. Weekly calls her work “riveting” and IndieWire.com spotlighted Anna as a “filmmaker to watch” in 2011. Her body of work, shown at more than 45 international film festivals –including Cannes, Tribeca, Tokyo LGFF and now MGLFF – blends narrative, documentary, experimental and comedic elements into a unique story-telling style that has become her trademark. In recent years, Anna has been selected for some of the most prestigious film development programs in the U.S. She was an honoree at Tribeca Film Festival’s “All Access” and “On Track” programs, IFP’s “Project Involve” and the 2010 Miami International Film Festival’s “Encuentros” program. Anna is an active and seasoned international director who has spoken at Sundance, served on the Jury of the Turin Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and was a narrative honoree at the IFP New York’s “Project Involve.” She is a long-time collaborator of French cable channel Canal Plus for whom she has written and directed several original docu-

THE NEXT BIG

LESBIAN THING IN 2014! What’s hot right now? Lesbians. And where do lesbians like to travel? Everywhere. You’re probably asking yourselves where the lesbians are every time you go on a trip. I know I do. I’m constantly researching the best night clubs (if any exist in the country I’m going to) and looking for lesbian groups to hang out with while I’m there. Most of the time I don’t find anything, unless I’m going to a big city or a really gay-friendly country. So where’s the hottest place for lesbians to travel right now?Olivia Travel has a few options. For those who have never heard of the lesbian travel company, Olivia provides cruise, resort, luxury and adventure vacations for lesbians all over the world. For one week, Olivia charters the entire ship or buys out the whole resort and fills it with women. In January 2014, Olivia will sail on its first ever Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro cruise. Joining Olivia on this cruise will be SuzeOrman, the world’s leading personal finance expert. Suze is “excited to join Olivia on this cruise and to teach the women who are on board, how to keep their money afloat.” This all-inclusive cruise will sail on board the luxurious, all-suite, six-star Silver Cloud. The cruise embarks from Buenos Aires, Argentina, home of tango, steaks, malbec and gauchos. Strolling through La Boca, the colorful birthplace of the sexy tango dance, you may even catch a glimpse of dancers practicing in the street. Soccer lovers, pick up a Porteños jersey at Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti, the national team’s home stadium or catch a Boca Juniors game. Two ports of call are located in Uruguay: Montevideo and Punta del Este. Montevideo houses the first sexual diversity monument in South America, erected in 2005, and is a must-see. Punta del Este is a flashy destination where lounging on golden sand and browsing designer boutiques constitute the day’s most demanding activities. Part Hamptons, part Côte d’Azur, part South Beach—with a dash of Las Vegas tossed in for good measure—this resort town is the place to relax and have fun.

The final three ports of call are in Brazil. Santos, the world’s foremost coffee port, is the starting point for a trip to São Paulo, the largest and most populous city in South America. Grab a cup of coffee and tour the largest beachfront garden in the world, with 719 flowerbeds and 20 different species of trees. While in Parati, a UNESCO World Heritage site, take a charming walking tour along the city’s narrow, cobblestone streets, delightingin the colonial architecture that dots the skyline. The cruise ends with an overnight in Rio de Janeiro, nicknamed the “Marvelous City.” Rio is one of the most popular gay destinations in the world, as it has not only a rich history and culture, but a vibrant nightlife scene as well. Ipanema and Copacabana, known for their stunning beaches, are also hot spots for ladies. One of the largest dance clubs for women, La Girl, is located in Copacabana and is the go-to spot for dancing. During the day, bike or sunbathe along the continuous ribbon of sand that makes up Rio’s pristine coastline, or see the dramatic view of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado Mountain.

> may ‘14: club med resort in cancun, mexico > jul‘14: italy, france, spain culinary cruise In 2014, Olivia sees two other favorite destinations for lesbian travelers. In February, the big O takes on the Eastern Caribbean. Departing from Fort Lauderdale and lasting eight days and seven nights, ports of call include Grand Turk; Turks & Caicos; San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas/St. John, U.S.V.I; and Half Moon Cay, Bahamas. Rumor has it there will be a big, soon-to-be-announced entertainer and a Superbowl party that will draw a huge crowd. In May, Olivia will be in Cancún, Mexico at the Club Med Resort, set between a large beach and a beautiful lagoon. This is an all-inclusive resort, which means your food, drinks, accommodations, sporting activities and entertainment are all included for eight days and seven nights! And in July, celebrity chefs will be on board the decadent Culinary Cruise in Italy, France & Spain to teach cooking demos, food pairings and much more. See ladies? There are options out there for you. For more information, please visit www.olivia.com

¡Me cae bien!

Not only is Blackadder the name of a cult classic BBC show, but it’s also the surname of author Jesse Blackadder, whose dramatic family history was the inspiration for her latest gender-bending romantic adventure, The Raven’s Heart. When she traveled to Scotland to research her family name, she found the name Blackadder repeated throughout the reign of Mary Queen of Scots, as both pirates and nobles supportive of the queen. Armed with this knowledge, Blackadder draws upon the history of Mary Queen of Scots - who “loved to disguise herself as a man” - and entwines her fate with that of the fictitious Allison Blackadder, the cross-dressing daughter of a noble family, who becomes Mary’s lady-in-waiting. With the historical richness of Sarah Waters and Emma Donoghue, Jesse Blackadder has created a world of political intrigue with a distinctly lesbian twist.

This BDSM classic, first published in 1995, gets a glossy reboot just in time for the 50 Shades of Gray craze. Not only does Molly Weatherfield’s Carrie’s Story stand up to the Christian Grays of the world, it puts the 50 Shades series to shame with its sheer intelligence and well-written heat. Billed as writer Susie Bright’s “favorite neo-Victorian erotic romance writer,” Weatherfield hits the hot spot with this sexy, sassy tale of a Berkley Ph.D candidate in comparative lit who spends her time in a BDSM underworld. Every book lover has that dream tucked away somewhere - brainy student by day, sexpot by night, and Weatherfield delivers. Tristan Taormino called the character Carrie a “thinking woman’s submissive,” and rightfully so. Carrie’s brain - and her desires - form the pulsing center of this erotic classic. Senior Slate editor Emily Bazelon covered the bullying-related suicide of Phoebe Prince, and now in Sticks and Stones, she gives us a cleareyed and compassionate look at how bullying has changed with the rise of social media - and what parents and educators need to know to protect our kids. Bazelon takes a long, hard look at the uniqueness of the “new” bullying - from all sides of the coin. Is it right, Bazelon asks, for teenagers to be made to take responsibility for the death of a peer? Where should the blame fall? How can we see, with strength and empathy, all of the parties involved in order to make a long term change? Bazelon has written a searing and honest take on modern bullying - and what to do about it. Your communication style and your ability to relate and share with significant others in your life has the opportunity to be ‘fine-tuned.’ You will enjoy better relationships and enjoy a better quality of life. Pay attention to details. Make sure you dot and cross before signing any documents. You’re more accident prone than usual so carelessness becomes outright dangerous. Be careful.

You’re focused on clearing out the debris of the past. Materially: do a bit of spring-cleaning. Physically: stick to healthy habits and shedding unhealthy ones. Spiritually: connect to your core values and goals. Whistle while you continue your work in progress. Give yourself permission to relax and enjoy life. Get out more and explore the possibilities for romanticcomedy adventures.

pisces feb 20 - mar 20 Your focus is on your finances and how to improve them. Having a well thought out game plan is important. Have confidence in yourself and your abilities, as well as complete faith in the abundance of the Universe. Prosperity will grow with patience and perseverance. Don’t give up on your dreams or goals. You can meet the challenges you are faced with.

libra sept 24 - oct 23

You have plenty of energy and are convinced that you can actually leap tall buildings. It wil take more than one single leap to do it and you may need some help holding the ladder. Your key words are patience and cooperation. Add introspection to the mix and you’ve got the recipe for success. Take your own inventory. Add what’s lacking and subtract what no longer serves.

You’re more ‘we’ oriented than usual as you enjoy the significant others in your life. Career-wise, one-on-one interactions will bring successful outcomes. Your personal life will flourish with more attention. Seek those who could further your agenda. Accept invitations to go out and play and generally enjoy yourself. Don’t get too aggressive going after what you want.

You’re more focused on your fantasies and daydreams than in your mundane reality, which is perfectly fine. Take positive steps to change the mundane into the fantastic. Seek every opportunity to connect with new people. Don’t hesitate to use your infamous charm to increase your sphere of influence. Give in to your natural impulses. Just don’t go so far you can’t get back.

The planets are empowering you to make positive changes needed in order to improve your current situation and the overall quality of your life. You’ve been frustrated by financial stop-starts and difficulties in collecting what’s due you. Now is the time to take steps to claim what’s yours. Have an ‘attitude of gratitude’ and enjoy doing the task for the task’s sake.

gemini may 22 - june 21

sagittarius nov 23 - dec 21

You’re feeling happy go-lucky and bursting with enthusiasm to follow through on current projects. You’ll have more than enough energy to take on new opportunities, meet and connect with interesting new people. You’ll also learn some important new skills, like diplomacy, and the ability to use charm to get others to follow your lead and do what you want. Make sure they’re ‘win-win’ scenarios.

The Universe is giving you permission to take a long overdue vacation from stress and worry. Plan to be happy-go-lucky for the foreseeable future. You’re feeling more playful, wanting to socialize and play with friends and family, instead of living the same-old, same-old routine. So just go ahead and do it. Enjoy it!

cancer June 22 - july 22

capricorn dec 22 - jan 20

You’ve got the ‘golden touch’ right now. Everything you put your considerable energy into will thrive; even seeds planted and not tended to will bear fruitful rewards. Take every opportunity to meet people in authority who can further your career ambitions. Take every opportunity to enjoy romantic-comedy adventures. Embrace life’s changes and go with the flow.

You’re motivated to build a better foundation for yourself - a secure sanctuary that will always welcome and replenish you. You may have to physically move and/or make other changes in order to feel secure, both professionally and personally. That might feel over-whelming to you. Don’t look to others. Depend on yourself and have confidence in your abilities.

You’ve been very introspective and extremely focused on your finances, career, and future cash flow, and are very concerned about having enough. There is a possibility of conflict over joint finances, so be aware and take care to consider your partners’ needs and opinions as well. Avoid arguing over values, religion, or politics, or anything else, as separations and endings are all too possible now.
