director’s chair

Oh my goodness, people, I have had a really interesting summer. Back in June, on the same day by pure coincidence, I decided to give up cigarettes and wheat. The funnier part of that story is that every time I have told anyone, they have been sure I said, “Cigarettes and weed.” Anyway, after 30+ years of smoking and consuming mass quantities of bread and pasta, I can assure you it wasn’t easy. I didn’t take a magic pill or patch myself up. I just switched to an electronic vaporizer, so I could drop my nicotine intake gradually and not kill anyone that wasn’t willing to give me a smoke or a sandwich. Today was nine weeks and I have to tell you that even though I can’t even imagine lighting up another cigarette, while out for dinner tonight, I almost knocked the baby out of the way to get to a biscuit. Besides that, I’ve been going through terrible withdrawals for my former, brilliant assistant. I poked a lot of fun at her, and she at me, but I admit wholeheartedly that giving her up so she could have bigger and better has been just dreadful. They just don’t make a pill or a patch for that. But hey, summer is supposed to be all about fun. So, while I wasn’t in a cold sweat over smokes, bagels or my “Jenny,” I was up to my eyeballs in great ideas for the rest of the season. I started in my own backyard and found a really interesting mix of things to do in the Fort Lauderdale area. From there, I took a look forward to the events of next month’s Womenfest in Key West. Then, I made sure to share it all with you. If that’s not fun enough, in this month’s issue, we’ve included a few special ways to experience a romantic date or two filled with culinary delights. But wait, there’s more! Way more fun than a barrel of monkeys is our fabulous cover girl, Cathy DuBuono. I could not be more thrilled to have this special lady back in She. If you thought she was cool before, I promise you will be even more impressed when you read this month’s cover story. When you put it all together, I think you will find that, like the temperature outside, this month’s issue is hot enough to fry an egg. Now, if I can just manage to stop thinking about putting that egg on a piece of toast it’ll all be good. See you next month.

What if The Hunger Games were real? For 12 teams of two on the wilderness competition Capture, they are. On the show, the teams—one that becomes the Hunters and the others the Hunted—compete in a high-tech wilderness compound called the “Hunting Grounds” for a month where resources are scarce, fighting is fierce, and the winning side takes home a $250,000 grand prize. It airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on The CW Network.

After 10 years, Kate Ceberano returns with Kensal Road, an album of all original work that reflects earlier influences of Hawaiian folk music and Fleetwood Mac but is revamped with the more modern sounds of the nu-folk and nu-country movement. Kate said the album has an authentic feel. “It’s like the stars have aligned now, and I’ve let go of the expectation of who other people think I should be.” Releases on August 6.

Brenda Fricker and Olympia Dukakis play a couple on the lam in the hilarious and touching movie Cloudburst. Dot and Stella have been together for 31 years until Dotty’s granddaughter tries putting Dot in a nursing home. So, Dot and Stella make a run to Canada where same-sex marriage is legal, picking up Prentice along their way. The three work to keep their respective lives and families together. On DVD now.

Moore Is More, Grammy-nominated R&B hit maker Chantè Moore’s new album, showcases Chantè in a sparkling set of mostly original songs along with her scintillating interpretation of the romantic classic “Cry Me a River.” Chantè is also busy starring in the upcoming reality show R&B Divas: L.A. and is currently touring nationally on the Soulful Sistas concert tour. The 10 track album is available now.

In the beautifully crafted and film Mosquita & Mari, two Latina teens Yolanda, aka Mosquita (Fenessa Pineda), and Mari (Venecia Troncoso) fall in love against the backdrop of Southeast L.A. From traditional and hard-working families, Mosquita tutors Mari. Their passion begins to bloom and distract The increasing pressures at home collide with their romance, forcing Mosquita and Mari to have to choose. On DVD now.

Based on the first book of a best-selling, six-book series, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones revolves around the story of a seemingly normal teenage girl Clary Fray (Lily Collins) whose mom is attacked and taken from their home in NYC—by none other than a demon. On her quest to find her mother, Clary discovers the truth about her past and her bloodline. In theaters August 21.

NOT TO BE MISSED: TNT’s new reality series, Cold Justice, a former prosecutor and a former crime scene investigator put their knowledge and experience to work helping local law-enforcement and families of violent-crime victims get to the truth. Premieres September 3 at 10pm. SHE - 10 - 08/13

in the news New Studies Give Support to Same-Sex Parenting Two recent studies, one in Australia and one in the U.S., point to children raised by same-sex parents not differing from, though perhaps even doing better than, children raised by opposite-sex families. Melbourne University conducted the “Australian Study of Child Health in Same-Sex Families,” which is touted as the world’s largest study to date looking at the impact of gay and lesbian parents on their children. The study collected data on 500 children around Australia. Preliminary results in the study indicate no differences between children raised in same-sex and opposite-sex families in terms of physical and mental health, as well as in their social interactions among peers and adults.

In U.S., 52% Back Law to Legalize Gay Marriage in 50 States Americans would legalize gay marriage nationwide, favor equal rights for such unions.

Accoring to new information released by Gallup, if given the opportunity to vote on a law legalizing gay marriage in all 50 states, the slight majority of Americans, 52%, say they would cast their vote in favor, while 43% would vote against it. Across the nation’s major demographic, political, and religious groups, support for the proposed law ranges from as high as 77% among self-described liberal Americans, and 76% among those with no religious affiliation, to as low as 23% among weekly churchgoers, and 30% among Republicans and conservatives. Other groups showing at least 60% support for legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide include Democrats, adults aged 18 to 34, those who rarely or never attend a church

or other place of worship, moderates, Easterners, and Catholics. Others showing less than 50% support include Protestants, adults 55 and older, Southerners, and men. The groups showing the most ambiguity about such a same-sex marriage law, with between 51% and 53% in favor and 43% to 45% opposed, include Midwesterners, nonwhites, and adults aged 35 to 54.

New Poll: Christine Quinn Holds Lead in NYC Mayoral Race The other study, published in the July/August edition of Child Development, studied 104 families all across the United States: 50 headed by heterosexual couples, 25 by lesbian parents, and 29 by gay male partners. The children were all adopted at birth or within the first few weeks of life, and at the time of the study all were around three years old. The studies give great support to advocates of same-sex parents, showing that it really is the love of the parents and a supportive atmosphere that raises the best and most well-adjusted children.

New York City mayoral candidate Christine Quinn, who if elected would become the city’s first openly LGBT mayor, has once again taken the lead in the race for the Democratic nomination, according to a new poll from Quinnipiac University. If elected, New York would become the largest municipality in the country with an openly gay mayor. Quinn, who is currently the chair of the New York City Council, would also be the city’s first female mayor. HRC endorsed Quinn’s candidacy in February, citing her unparalleled experience leading the city, including her experience with the budget process and preventing layoffs of teachers and firefighters. She stood with HRC and other organizations that successfully fought

for marriage equality in New York in 2011. Edie Windsor, who brought the case against the United States government that resulted in Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act being declared unconstitutional, endorsed Quinn shortly after her victory at the Supreme Court. quinnfornewyork.com

what he said about... “While Pope Francis’s words do not reflect a shift in Church policy, they represent a significant change in tone. Like his namesake, Francis’s humility and respect for human dignity are showing through, and the widespread positive response his words have received around the world reveals that Catholics everywhere are thirsty for change...But as long as millions of LGBT Catholic individuals, couples and youth alike are told in churches big and small that their lives and their families are disordered and sinful because of how they are born—how God made them—then the Church is sending a deeply harmful message....” —Chad Griffin, HRC’s president on Pope Francis’ words about welcoming gay priests into the clergy, July 29th.

Aqua Foundation for Women partners with Local Groups to Support Homeless lGBTQ Youth

Aqua Foundation for Women is partnering with The Alliance for LGBTQ Youth, Pridelines Youth Services, The GLBT Community Projects Fund at The Miami Foundation, SAVE Dade and Rep. David Richardson on a collaborative effort to address the chronic issue of homelessness among LGBT youth in Miami-Dade county. “Our community needs assessment reported an astonishing 34% percent of LGBTQ youth were kicked out of their homes here in Miami-Dade County,” reports Carla Silva, Executive Director of The Alliance for GLBTQ Youth. “This is consistent with national statistics that on average, an LGBTQ youth is likely to be physically or sexually victimized by 7 more people, and run away from home almost twice as often, as a heterosexual counterpart.” State funding has been secured through the efforts of SAVE Dade and Representative David Richardson to provide housing by Citrus, a community based health network in Miami. While experienced in providing shelter and support to the homeless, that network does not have the experience necessary to handle the specific needs of LGBTQ youth. Aqua Foundation and The GLBT Community Projects Fund at The Miami Foundation will support a full-time position at the Alliance for GLBTQ Youth and Pridelines that will provide oversight and coordination of inclusive LGBTQ-specific programming.

“...an astonishing 34% percent of LGBTQ youth were kicked out of their homes here in Miami-Dade County.” Robin Schwartz, Executive Director of the Aqua Foundation states: “Existing services do not amount to a comprehensive response. The few services that presently exist often are unsafe, with reports of harassment by shelter staff and residents, or are focused on family reunification, which is not an option for many LGBTQ youth thrown out of their homes. The lack of safe shelter forces many youth to engage in a multitude of dangerous activities to protect themselves and to cope with the tragedy of being homeless because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This is unacceptable and Aqua Foundation is leading the charge to help our youth by making it a funding priority.” The funding from Aqua Foundation will cover an LGBTQ Liason who will work with various organizations to provide support programming for the youth as well as funding for travel and meals for the youth. SAVE-DADE

celebrates 20 years serving our Community!

SAVE Dade is Miami-Dade County’s foremost advocacy group for the local LGBT community. SAVE, which stands for Safeguarding American Values for Everyone, has been active in the community since 1993 when the organization was founded to counteract the anti-equality efforts of singer Anita Bryant of the American Family Association. SAVE’s first major accomplishment was the passage of a countywide Human Rights Ordinance in 1998. This was 21 years after the voters of Miami-Dade voted to repeal a similar ordinance passed by the county commission in 1977. For the second time, religious fundamentalists mounted a campaign to repeal the ordinance in 2002, but this time the LGBT community, led by SAVE Dade, beat back the effort, cementing two decades of progress for gays and lesbians in Miami-Dade County. More recently, SAVE was involved in the 2008 passage of a countywide domestic partner registry that makes it easier for domestic partners to partake in benefits from firms that grant those benefits to domestic partners of employees. SAVE was then involved in a public education campaign with the aim of adding same-sex partners to the newly created registry. Building on that record of success, the past year alone has been an incredible year for SAVE Dade and the local LGBT movement. In August 2012,

SAVE Dade helped elect Florida’s first openly gay state legislator, Representative David Richardson of Miami Beach. That same year, SAVE Dade also notched an 86% win rate among endorsed candidates and initiatives in the November general elections. SAVE celebrated its most recent victory last month in Miami Beach where the city commission passed a revolutionary tax equity ordinance by a unanimous vote. The new policy reimburses city employees in domestic partnerships, same-sex or not, who were forced to pay taxes on health benefits that employees in legally recognized opposite-sex marriages are exempt from paying. In many cases, this added up to upwards of a thousand dollars in wages lost by city employees in domestic partnerships. The victory in Miami Beach happened just in time for the SAVE Dade’s 20th anniversary, which the organization celebrated on July 7th. SAVE Dade’s founder Damian Pardo marked the occasion not only with celebration but also with reflection. “I am grateful to, and proud of, so many people who have supported SAVE Dade for over twenty years and especially the staff who strive for LGBT equality daily,” he says. “We’ve made progress never imaginable in my lifetime.” Going forward, SAVE Dade is focused on finishing what they started by adding trans-inclusive language to the existing countywide Human Rights Ordinance they were originally involved in passing back in 1998. SAVE Dade is currently engaged in the historic TransEquality campaign to help end discrimination against everyone in Miami-Dade County, including the local gay, lesbian AND transgender communities. As it stands now, Miami-Dade’s countywide Human Rights Ordinance prohibits discrimination on the basis of a variety of factors, including sexual orientation, but it omits gender identity and gender expression as characteristics that cannot factor into hiring practices, housing applications, provision of financial services and accommodations in places that serve the public such as restaurants and hotels. Over 150 cities, counties and states, including neighboring Monroe and Broward counties, offer protection against discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression. Anyone looking to get involved in this historic campaign can check them out online at savedade.org/transequality. The county commission will be meeting on this issue on August 26, and with the other side already in full outrage mode, it’s imperative for supporters of equality to fill the chamber that day to send the message that the public supports ending discrimination now. www.savedade.org

Stepping across the threshold of her quaint North Hollywood home, Cathy DeBuono is in full golden retriever mode, warmly welcoming me into her home and encircling me in a giant hug. Her wingspan would make an albatross envious. At 6 feet tall, she could be an imposing figure, yet as we sit down in her shady backyard, she folds herself in thirds and enthusiastically begins to share a litany of good news. Her beloved dog Comet (who she calls one part American Staffordshire Terrier and one part Muppet) tries to get her to play fetch while her 16-year-old cockatiel Sam bobs around on her hand. Her cats, a fluffy Maine Coon named Jackson and youngster she calls Pico de Gato (a cat she adopted on a recent Sweet trip), round out her fuzzy menagerie. With a new film wrapped, a hit radio show taping in front of live audiences all over the country, her directing debut coming up, a documentary in the works, hosting charity poker tournaments on Sweet vacations and her thriving therapy practice, DeBuono is a veritable renaissance woman in full bloom. Growing up in Bronxville, New York, a sleepy town of 6,000, DeBuono dreamed of being a pitcher for the New York Yankees or John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. A SHE - 20 - 08/13

standout athlete and a fierce middle blocker, she attended the University of Kentucky on a volleyball scholarship, majoring in communications, where Ashley Judd cast DeBuono in her first play her senior year. Bit by the acting bug, DeBuono headed to the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. Upon graduation, she headed to Hollywood with her BFF John W. McLaughlin—armed with a medical massage therapy license and a desire to change the world through creativity. While auditioning for roles, Cathy worked as a massage therapist, applying her strong, skilled hands to the likes of Mark McGwire, Jeremy Piven, Ted Danson and Jenna Elfman. Success came early with a recurring role as Terry Ferrell’s body double and various minor recurring characters like M’Pella on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. More character work fueled her passion for acting with parts on shows like The Pretender, Becker, Pacific Blue and a recurring role on Chicago Hope. In 1998, a man approached DeBuono at Century City Mall with promises of a big payday and lots of recognition as a model for the opening credits of a new James Bond movie. “He asked if I was an actor or model and told me about this amazing opportunity,” she said. “I knew he was full of it right away. He didn’t want to go through my agent. He wouldn’t let me keep his business card. His promises of opportunity were outlandish. He fascinated me, but I knew he was up to no good.” Curiosity piqued, DeBuono agreed to a

photo shoot with him near Lookout Mountain in the Hollywood Hills. Her Spidey senses were tingling, but she couldn’t resist the chance to uncover his ruse. “I wanted to catch him at something. I thought about calling the police and having them follow me, but I conferred with my dad who was a detective in New York. He said they would never let me set myself up like that,” she said. So DeBuono set up her own sting operation, enlisting the help of her hulking stuntman friend Chester. She and Chester arrived at the appointed meeting space, and the man was a no-show. Fast forward to 2003. DeBuono, watching the morning news, hears an eerily familiar story. “A girl is missing. She was last seen at the Century City Mall talking to a photographer,” she said. “They put up a photo of the guy I’d talked to years earlier. I recognized him immediately. I called the police.” A few days later, the police found the body of 22-year-old Kristi Johnson near the address on Lookout Mountain where DeBuono was to meet the same man a handful of years prior. He was Victor Paleologus, a convicted sex offender on parole who had tried the James Bond gambit on many an aspiring, young actress. One of several women to come forward, DeBuono testified at his trial. “We had a purely circumstantial case against him until these women came forward with their testimony and tied it all together,” said Virginia Obenchain, lead detective on the case with the Santa Monica Police Department.

Paleologus was convicted on the testimony of his potential and actual victims. Now, DeBuono is telling the story in a documentary about this experience and how it was the voices of women who came together to convict a rapist and murderer. “This story is a perfect example of women speaking out and putting a predator behind bars,” she said. “Women need to know there is power in their voices. We need to keep speaking up. This story shows what’s possible when we insist we be heard.” The documentary project merges her therapy, filmmaking and on-camera experience. It’s the first project for her new company Abundanza. Abundanza is a purposeful misspelling of the Italian word for “abundance,” apropos for the Italian DeBuono’s myriad of skills and interests. “The name represents a limitless way of thinking without borders, always evolving, always growing,” she said. “I’ve gathered a team of abundantly creative and talented people for my Abundanza team. People who bring heart and soul as well as skills to the table. I feel really blessed, like everything in my life has led up to this opportunity.” Her voluminous and oxymoronic library, featuring books on healing with light sideby-side with tomes on the psychoanalysis of serial killers, reveals her interests run the gamut. “I’m so lucky to be at this point in my life where I get to do what I love every day,” DeBuono says. “Mostly that means never doing the same thing twice. It’s the perfect scenario for this ADHD kid.”

In 2001, DeBuono almost took a different path. She quit acting to pursue an education in psychology. She was seeking a more potent way to make a difference. “That year was a profoundly painful, illuminating time for me. My father died from lung cancer, my best friend took her own life and my great aunt with whom I was very, very close passed of old age,” she said. “I also said goodbye to my 23-year-old cat that I’d had since fourth grade, then subsequently had to put down my 13-year-old dog due to illness. I emerged from the year a different person, expanded and more fascinated with the study of the human experience than ever.” Earning a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Antioch University in 2003, DeBuono eschewed the rigors of the office and the restrictions of working within the confines of group homes. Her desire to help people dashed by a money-making, ass-covering system. “Insurance restrictions, time limits and being confined to an office didn’t fit my personality at all,” she said. “I found out that I love the exploration of the human experience—but not the bureaucratic application of it. ” A chance meeting with director Lee Friedlander at The Abbey in West Hollywood led to her starring role as Risa in the LOGO film Out at the Wedding, which launched a firestorm of interest in the bright, beautiful brunette. At the request of After Ellen creator Sarah Warn, DeBuono created the vlog What’s Your Problem?, where she interviewed prominent lesbians (and lesbian adjacent people) while helping her viewers with their problems. It was a huge success for After Ellen and DeBuono.

“That vlog allowed me to use my creative energy to reach out to people on a large scale and my training in psychotherapy to help people at the same time,” she said. “Oh, and there was a lot of wine, too. I felt strongly that this vlog needed to be a casual, fun experience, even while tackling some truly intense issues. Many of my viewers felt isolated and alone, so I wanted to share an environment of familiarity and friendship with them. “Almost everyday I get a request to bring that vlog back. People really connected to it.” From there, And Then Came Lola,We Have to Stop Now, Exes and Ohs, Meth Head, A Perfect Ending, Rose by Any Other Name and a myriad of lesbian projects materialized. The project reunited her with long-time friend and award-winning Meth Headwriter and director Jane Clark who she met early in her Hollywood career when they were both background players who became actors with recurring roles. In Crazy Bitches, DeBuono plays a lesbian character in a star-studded ensemble cast, featuring Blake Berris (Days of Our Lives), Guinevere Turner (The L Word), Samantha Colburn (Criminal Minds), Mary Jane Wells (Elena Undone), Candis Cayne (Elementary) and more. “It’s my first time in a horror film,” DeBuono said. “I loved getting to run around and play in the woods!” The film is a dark comedy that director Clark describes as Bridesmaids meets Scream. DeBuono lifts the leg of her Lucky Brand Jeans to reveal scrapes and bruises from lit-

erally throwing herself into the roll of Cassie, a UC San Francisco volleyball coach and former sorority girl who meets her friends at a remote camp for a weekend sorority reunionslash-birthday celebration turned deadly. “Cathy’s performance in this film is going to really put a mark on who she is as an actor,” Clark said. “With all the great and fun stuff that she’s been doing, there has not been a lot of opportunity for her to show her full range. I think that people don’t understand that Cathy’s range goes deep. She’s a very talented individual. Even if you want to go to a more dramatic place, she can do that, and I just don’t think there have been opportunities for her to show that. We get the whole scope (in CrazyBitches).” With all the requests for a return of What’s Your Problem?, DeBuono found another, simpler format to bring her unique blend of humor and talk therapy to a broad audience with her weekly radio show, Cathy Is In: The Cathy DeBuono Show, on LA Talk Radio, Monday from 2 to 4p.m. Pacific. “With the vlog, I had to spend a lot of time editing and doing production on my own,” she said. “The radio format allows me more freedom. I love working with my cohost comedian, Jennie McNulty. We come in for two hours and dive in and play. We talk to fascinating people, explore the issues of the day and laugh a whole lot. Like What’s Your Problem?, I want listeners to walk away with their thoughts provoked but having felt completely entertained.” Cathy Is In is a hit with a robust live listening audience as well as over 50,000 monthly downloads. DeBuono thrives on the exchange of energy with other people, so when comedian McNulty suggested they

take their show on the road to record it in front of a live audience, DeBuono couldn’t say “yes” fast enough. Debuting the live show at San Francisco’s Brava Theater on July 13, DeBuono had a blast, interacting with the live audience and a bevy of guests, including comedian Marga Gomez, filmmaker Rolla Selback and other prominent locals. “It was such a blast for me to have that direct audience interaction and feedback,” she said. “We did ply them with complimentary Castle Rock wine prior to the show, so they were ready to play.” The show begins with a 20minute comedy set from McNulty followed by the radio show. Mics in the audience are open the entire time, so the audience can participate at will and shape the dialogue. “I don’t have a lot of rules,” DeBuono told the audience at the top of the show, “But if you do come say something into the mic, be ready for my response.” The duo plans to take the show on the road once a month. Yes, they’re taking requests. DeBuono stretches and reclines as the light fades from the sky. The air grows cool, and Sam chirps from his cage. She looks satisfied with herself as she describes yet another project close to her heart, directing her first narrative film next year. Feeling tentative about sharing the details, DeBuono is clearly excited about bringing together an ensemble cast of female actors she admires to realize her vision. “I’ve been watching other people direct in different contexts and genres for so many years,” she said. “I love the whole process as an actor of working with a director to bring a character to life. It’s a process that I want to experience from the other side with actresses who have mad acting chops.” DeBuono had the opportunity to dip her foot in the pool when she filled in and directed a couple of episodes of her web series We Have to Stop Now. Comedian and co-star Suzanne

Westenhoefer recalls working with DeBuono as a director. “Cathy knew I was rusty as an actor, so she took down her director’s mask and led me as a friend to some of the best work I’ve ever done,” Westenhoefer said. “I cannot wait to work with her again.” Coupled with everything else she has going on in her life and career, Cathy DeBuono loves playing Texas Hold ‘Em Poker. A lot. She struck upon the idea of using her mad poker skills to raise money for charity with Sweet, the lesbian travel company. “I believe wholeheartedly in Shannon Wentworth and her approach to business,” DeBuono said. “Sweet takes five-star vacations and turns them into a fun-filledhumanitarian effort.” With seven Sweet charity poker events under her belt, DeBuono has raised over $10,000 for charities that help children and animals in Cozumel and Puerto Vallarta. More than a fun way to raise money, it’s a great way for vacationers to get to know one another. “I love the way poker gives people an organic environment to interact with one another,” she said. “It’s been a great vehicle to bring people together. The people who play poker together continue to interact throughout the vacation and beyond. Plus, there’s no social pressure. It’s a laid back atmosphere for people to kick back, play cards and earn funny nicknames.” Night falls as DeBuono hugs herself into an impossibly small ball, grinning as she looks toward the future. “You know, I feel incredibly grateful each day to wake up and do what I love. It’s like all the threads of my life are weaving a gorgeous tapestry,” she said. “I think that’s what it’s like when you’re on the right path. The right opportunities present themselves at the right time. The trick is staying present and saying ‘yes’.”

Particularmente me refiero a programas radiales.

Personalmente, me agrada muchísimo.

As this August 5th marks the 51st year of her passing— yes, there are new products soon to be released with Marilyn Monroe as the image of these items. Binding Devotion by Kiki Archer Similar in scope to Syd Parker’s Someone Like You, Kiki Archer’s third book, Binding Devotion, explores questions of commitment verses desire. Andi Armstrong, the CEO of the UK’s largest LGBT rights organization, Proud Unity, has devoted her life to fighting for marriage equality. She’s a powerful speaker and public figure, who has the perfect life on the outside. However, in spite of all the work she’s put into LGBT rights, her own partnership is called in to question when she becomes attracted to her new assistant. Binding Devotion also received rave reviews on Amazon.com and it is easy to see why—Archer’s latest is at once topical and gripping.

The Wall by Marlen Haushofer If you’ve got a thing for dark, post-apocalyptic novels, the feminist, dystopian novel The Wall should be on your summer reading list. It follows an unnamed middle-aged woman who wakes up one morning at her cousin’s cottage to find that she is the sole survivor of a worldwide nuclear holocaust. No burning fires or mushroom clouds for Haushofer; instead the holocaust is chilling in its silence; it merely happens overnight. The protagonist awakes to discover a transparent “wall” that separates her property from the rest of the town and the worldwide devastation. Joined by her dog Lynx, a cow, and a house cat, the Woman documents her story for us through journals and so begins the tense and tender narrative of survival and renewal. Chilling, fantastic, and deeply disturbing, The Wall is a modern classic.

The Escape Artist by Judith Katz I was delighted to see The Escape Artist in my review pile; her Lambda Award Winning Running Fiercely Toward a High Thin Sound was fantastic. The book explores Jewish roots, magical realism, and romance. In The Escape Artist Sofia is lured from early 20th century Poland into an American brothel by businessman Tutsik Goldenberg. Sofia then meets Hankus, another Polish immigrant who escaped the pogroms and survives by posing as a male magician and acrobat; the two women fall in love. Katz’s novel speaks volumes about love, power and magic. SHE - 34 - 08/13

This is a break-through time for you as you are finally able to advance your agenda and substantially improve your current situation. Relationships of all kinds need special care. Teamwork gets the job done faster, compromising makes the task more pleasant, and tuning into the needs and wants of others assures a win-win scenario. Go along to get along, and you’ll enjoy the ride.

You’re set to rock ‘n’ roll as the planets empower you to strut your stuff. Big changes are in store for you, and you now have the confidence to embrace them. You’ll still need to expand your sphere of influence to convince others to follow you, so charm rather than bully. Listen to others and their ideas to make your plans successful.

pisces feb 20 - mar 20 You are being challenged this month to find the right balance between being an independent free spirit and being in committed relationships where responsibilities and expectations have to be met. Instead of creating conflict and chaos in your quest for more personal freedom, try taking some time to be clear about what you really want and need and how to achieve it.

You’ll have lots of opportunities to go out and have fun in the sun with your friends and family, but you will have many creative ideas that you want to spend your energy on and will have to fit them into your regular, everyday life. You can dance to your own tune as long as it’s in harmony with the rest of your world.

You’re in your element flitting around, networking whenever and wherever, reconnecting with old friends and making significant connections to new ones. Amid all the fun activities lurk reminders that you still have to pick and choose which opportunity to pursue and what long-term goals don’t suit you. The same choices will be made concerning whom and what you spend your time and energy on.

Your focus needs to be on home and family matters and on making necessary improvements. Avoid home v. work conflicts as much as possible, but manage to get your work done so as not to undermine your financial security. You sometimes make important decisions based on your emotions, which isn’t always in your own best interests. Remember to include your head in the process.

You’re motivated to manifest your hopes and dreams and finally get the recognition and appreciation you feel you deserve. You have big ideas, which lead to making big plans that naturally lead to creating strategies to actually make “it” happen. Be “it” a relationship or a business deal, you won’t get very far on just your ego. Bring something substantial to the table.

gemini may 22 - june 21

sagittarius nov 23 - dec 21

You’ll need to complete one thing at a time if you are to successfully reach your goal. This is not the best moment to create disharmony in any of your relationships. Instead, compromise and cooperate so that everyone’s needs are met. You’ll need to talk with both of your personalities so that you aren’t working against yourself by sending conflicting messages.

You’re in for a radical change. Whether you want it or not, here it comes! So, embrace it. It’s always better to have time to plan for it, but sometimes it’s way better if you’re open to what the Universe might have in mind for you. Tap into your dreams for a better future and into your wealth of talent and know-how.

cancer June 22 - july 22

capricorn dec 22 - jan 20

You’re laser beamed on your finances and more determined than ever to increase your cash flow as well as stick to a budget that includes saving some of whatever you have. Embrace opportunities, network your skills and services, and prepare to make necessary changes in your professional life. Be realistic when projecting future earnings, and be reasonable and patient around your expectations.

You’ve got your goals firmly in mind even if you can’t reach them yet. With sound strategies, however, you will detour around every obstacle. Cash flow is still stressed, so be inventive and find ways to cut expenses while improving your lifestyle. Quality of life should have more value than the size of your bank account. Money, after all, can’t buy you love.

You’ll have to balance your need for space and desire to be close. You’ll also need to curb your tendency to create drama where romantic-comedy-adventure would serve you much better. You’ll be tripping over opportunities, but be careful. Impatience will make you stumble, and stubbornness will make you fall. Follow your dreams and instincts, but stay flexible. Above all, be patient.
