I’ve been doing something I shouldn’t be doing. It’s not a new thing. I’ve actually been at it for awhile. How do I know it’s something I shouldn’t be doing? Well, I am a firm believer in the idea that if you question whether you should admit it, then it’s probably not something you should be up to. The interesting thing is that I know I shouldn’t be doing it but I just keep doing it anyway. I could say that I’m still doing it because it’s become habit now. I could probably sit here and tell you a few other “reasons” for my behavior—blame it on other things or other people. But it would all just be excuses. The truth is that I’ve been doing it solely because, in the moment, I make the choice to do it just because I frigging want to. That’s it. I am my own keeper. No one’s holding a gun to my head. I am 100% responsible for my own choices and my own actions. You know, I am not alone. There are millions of people in this world just like me. I’ve got a three year-old in the house who, on an almost daily basis, grabs that one thing we’ve told her a hundred times not to touch. “Hey! Are you supposed to be touching that?!” “No.” “Then why are you holding it?” “Because I want it.” [Oh, okay. Guess that settles that. Not.] She knows she is not supposed to be doing it but she just keeps doing it anyway. You are probably sitting there wondering what this “shouldn’t be” is. Does it really matter? Eating greasy food, procrastinating, smoking, fooling around, excessive drinking, over-sleeping, allowing disrespect, over-spending, getting high, taking someone for granted, touching that not-supposed-to-touch thing. There are a host of possibilities, all of which most of us are guilty of doing when we know we really shouldn’t. And we have absolutely no one to blame but ourselves, because the truth is that we are doing it just because we frigging want to. I can’t say I don’t feel bad about it though. My conscience kicks me in the ass on a regular basis. I know that while I may enjoy it in the moment, I will ultimately suffer the consequences. But then again, don’t we all? See you next month.

Ariana Grande follows up her two hit singles “Break Free” and “Problem” (featuring Iggy Azalea) with her sophomore effort, My Everything. Produced by Babyface and others, her twelve-track album features artists such as Big Sean, Cashmere Cat and Zedd. Since “Problem” broke records, making it the fourth largest song debut by a woman, My Everything promises to be another fabulous, catchy journey from Grande. Available August 25.
Comics fans rejoice! Guardians of the Galaxy stars Zoe Saldana, as the morally upright warrior Gamora. She and, yum, her skintight pants are joined by the other guardian misfits: leader Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel) and Rocket, a genetically engineered raccoon/bounty hunter in the ultimate battle against the villainous Ronan. With Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillian, Lee Pace. In theaters now.
Can’t get enough of Game of Thrones? Love women with swords and tales of magic? Then tune into The Quest. From the executive producers of The Amazing Race and The Lord of the Rings comes the most fantastic reality show you’ll ever see, as male and female knights from twelve competing kingdoms protect their lands. With Adria Kyne, Bonnie Gordon. Airs Thursdays at 8 pm on ABC.
Set in the year 2025, the dystopian thriller series The Lottery brings us to a world in which women have stopped having children—until Dr. Alison Lennon (Marley Shelton) manages to fertilize 100 embryos. To determine who will carry the embryos, the Chief of Staff (Athena Karkanis) convinces the president to hold a lottery and a dangerous fight for the survival of the human race begins. Airs Sundays at 10 pm on Lifetime.
Called the “Cello Goddess” by The New Yorker, Maya Beiser’s Uncovered reimagines contemporary rock hits such as Nirvana’s 90s anthem “Lithium” and Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” alongside the best of Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin and more. Featuring ten pop rock classics, Uncovered makes it easy to see why Maya Beiser does for the cello what Tori Amos does for the piano: makes it sing a whole new tune. Available August 26.
Like a fine wine, Helen Mirren gets better with age. In The Hundred Foot Journey, Mirren creates gorgeous food at her acclaimed French restaurant, but sparks fly when an Indian family opens a competing establishment across the street. Produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, this film should be heaven for those who love their inspiration with a side of food porn. With Charlotte Le Bon, Manish Dayal. In theaters August 8.

nal o i stitut 2008 uflo marriage ban n o c n July was definitely an important month for the LGBT community in Florida. Two milestone rulings were decided by 2 judges in two different Florida counties putting an end to the November 4, 2008 vote endorsed by 62% of the voters that banned same-sex marriage and civil unions. One came on July 17 when Republican Judge Luis M. Garcia had found Florida’s ban on marriage unconstitutional (case: Huntsman v. Heavilin). That decision applies just to Monroe County. On July 25, after 5pm, Miami-Dade County Judge Sarah Zabel also ruled that Florida’s marriage ban is unconstitutional (case: Pareto v. Ruvin). On both cases, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has filed an appeal, which means no wedding bells in Florida just yet. At press time, no update on either case had been released by Equality Florida. Next legal step? The Florida Supreme Court. To stay informed, visit eqfl.org/marriagenews.
From the ruling: The recognition that the right to marry encompasses categories of people not traditionally considered to be accorded that right has been slow in coming, but it has become increasingly obvious that it is not constitutionally permissible to deny samesex couples the right to marry. Preventing couples from marrying solely on the basis of their sexual orientation serves no governmental interest. It serves only to hurt, to discriminate, to deprive same-sex couples and their families of equal dignity, to label and treat them as second-class citizens, and to deem them unworthy of participation in one of the fundamental institutions of our society. “It is a victory for children who have longed for the day when their families would be respected equally under the law. And it is a victory for all Floridians who share the values of fairness and equality under the law. We applaud Judge Zabel for her decision. No matter the legal path ahead, we will continue to fight until the day we all have the right in Florida to marry the person we love.” —Nadine Smith, Equality Florida Institute Chief Executive Officer “The plaintiffs in this case want what all couples want: the freedom to make
a lifetime commitment to the person they love and protect their families – a protection that only marriage can provide. Majorities of Americans in Florida and across the country support the freedom to marry. Today’s decision further highlights how out of step Sen. Marco Rubio is, with growing numbers in his own party, a strong majority of Floridians, and now increasingly the Florida courts.” —Marc Solomon, Freedom to Marry’s national campaign director. “The days when some Florida families are denied the respect and protections that come with marriage are numbered.” —Daniel Tilley, ACLU of Florida LGBT rights staff attorney. “It means so much for a court to recognize our family and say that we must be treated equally. We love this state and want nothing more than to be treated as equal citizens who contribute to the community and help make Florida an even better place for everyone who lives here. Today’s ruling means that we can finally have the same legal protections as other married couples and the security of knowing that our family is legally secure.” —Miami-Dade Plaintiff Catherina Pareto.

She’s got the golden seal of approval from the legendary Indigo Girls! Meet one of the busiest musicians on the circuit right now, Hannah Thomas—playing over 200 shows in just 18 months, this Americana Rocker girl will knock your boots off, in a “love at first listen” kinda way. Her CD studio release “Good bye on Wasted Time” will feed your country-rock soul and make you want a front row seat when she’s in town. Hannah, you are everywhere! Seriously!
I know! (laughs) But, as of this moment, I’m in Denver. Tell me about how your summer is go-
ing..you’ve been playing tons of Pride Festivals, haven’t you?
Yeah, I played Knoxville Pride with the Indigo Girls, I got to sing with Jennifer Nettles in New Hampshire and with Terri Clark this past May. It’s been a pretty wild ride! It’s been great! You kind of burst on the scene! I remember someone told me to check out your music and by the time I did, you were literally rockin’ all of Georgia!
Yeah, I played Georgia quite a bit, then went out on tour and I’ve been on the road for about 2 years now. I read that you’ve played over 200 shows in 18 months!
(she laughs) That sounds about right. What’s it like to share the stage with the Indigo Girls?!
It’s pretty amazing! A definite dream come true. I been listening to them since I was 11 years ago. So, to go from listening to them in your bedroom as a little girl to being on stage with them…it’s like a crazy dream come true. For lesbians, it’s like they’re our music Gods. So, you’ve literally been to church with the Indigo Girls.
That’s exactly what it feels like! And Terri Clark, country royalty…
Yep..proud moment, totally. You must hear your music being de-

scribed as everything from country to blues to rock, but how would you, yourself, describe it?
It’s a really hard thing to do. I’m definitely a rocker girl at heart. My heart is in the song writing, So, I basically say it’s Rockin’ Americana, because I’ve got country, punk and pop influences in it, too. You must get such a great response at your live concerts.
My shows are really energetic, I love to include the crowds. They’re so much fun, everywhere I go. What’s the panty factor been like? Any panties thrown on stage yet?
Panties? No, not yet but I hear they’re comin’ so I’ll be ready!
be a singer/songwriter, didn’t you?
ter support system in my family and friends.
Absolutely. I’ve had a guitar since I was a toddler. In the last couple years, though, I think I’ve become way more open about myself, and my work. When I was younger, I think I may have been writing from a commercial stand point, and now that I’ve become more honest with myself and who I am, I feel so much better about what I’m doing. The response is always incredible, I feel welcomed with open arms, and that means so much to me. Perhaps if I had figured that out earlier, things would have been a bit smoother, but hey, it’s happened, and I’m lovin’ it. It’s all a part of the ride. Writing songs & playing music is living the dream to me.
How about a girlfriend? I know everyone is going to want to know…
Yep, I have a great girlfriend, who is fully supportive of my career and I’m the same way with her. She gets to come with me to some shows, which is awesome. We get to see each other quite a bit. Who would you say are your biggest music influences?
Oh, I’m all over the map- Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, Johnny Cash, Tori Amos. (She laughs) Early on, I was a big Spice Girl fan. They were my first introduction to “girl power”. I think Ginger Spice may have been my first girl crush!
Oh, it’ll happen….first a bra or two, then BOOM…panties!
Oh Hannah, my wife will love this! She was a big Mel C. fan when she was young!
(laughing) Okay, I’m so ready!
OH, I wanted to BE her!
Do you like being on tour? It seems hard being away from family & friends
you’re currently touring with your EP “Good Bye on Wasted Time” right now?
for so long?
Yeah, I’ll be getting into the studio soon, I have a new EP which will be more of a “singer/ songwriter” style, but still with that ‘Outlaw Americana’ edge, so I’m really looking forward to that.
It’s tough, sure, but I can’t complain because I get to see different places and faces from all over the country. Plus, with social media, Face Time and stuff, I get to keep up with everyone. I think I’ve been to like…27 different states, and I mean, really, not many people can say that, so I feel lucky and grateful. It’s actually always exciting..so that’s cool to me.
At this stage of your career, if you could hand pick the perfect band to work with, who would you pick?
Honestly? The band I have now IS my dream band. We have Tommy Martin, who’s played with Madonna and Michael Jackson, and Don Dixon who’s worked with Mary Chapin Carpenter and we’ve got our percussionist who’s played with the Indigo Girls, so I’d have to say this right here, what I have now, is my dream band.
Aside from a hometown concert, do you have favourite places to play?
I have a lot of favourites, actually…Chicago was great, Knoxville was so fun….Akron, Ohio is awesome. We’re doing a show up there in August with the Indigo Girls for the Gay Games, and I’m really looking forward to that! That should be really fun! How do you feel about being described as a “lesbian musician”, do you feel like that’s even necessary?
Oh, I don’t mind. Especially if it helps someone to know it or hear it. I love my gay fan base. I think music spreads across all kinds of people, but if being out helps, all the better, you know? Like, I’ve never sat down and written “a lesbian song”, I just write about how I feel. But, no, I don’t mind anyone describing me as a lesbian musician. I mean, it’s so hard in the beginning, so I don’t feel like anything hurts, and I’ve always been out, I’m not hiding anything, I love all my fans, and I think its important to be out. If it’s helped someone to know I’m a lesbian, then I think that’s great. Music is music at the end of the day. You knew early on that you wanted to
How hard is it to take care of yourself on the road? Was it different when you were younger?
For me, I feel like you can’t really be a big party person on the road because it takes its toll, so I try and get a good amount of rest, eat right, being coped up in a van or car is rough so I’m always trying to stretch it out, get some exercise and stuff like that.
Wow! Ideal! How do you get in the head space to write? Do you just wait til it happens or do you have a notebook and a pen and tell everyone to clear the room?
It definitely feels better when it comes organically. It could be both ways. I do try once in a while to just sit and write. But I can’t force it. Its hard to clear your head to make way for writing, you know? How about collaborating?
How is your support system? Was your family always behind you, or was it, “maybe get an accounting degree to fall back on ….just in case?”
I do more in-studio collaborations, Amy Ray has sang with me, I’ve sang with her on her solo country record. She sang with me on “Pacifier”…so it’s been great. These past two years have been REALLY good to me, I feel so fortunate to get to do what I love for a living.
Oh, they’re great! So supportive. I mean, yeah, once in a while, they get a little worried but that’s normal, I guess. I couldn’t ask for a bet-

Tired of the same old Thanksgiving dinner? This year, you’ve got another option. Olivia’s Thanksgiving Caribbean Cruise (November 23-30, 2014) will be one big party! Leaving out of Tampa, this eight-day, sevennight adventure will take you to the incredibly beautiful ports of Costa Maya, Mexico; Santo Tomas de Castilla, Guatemala; Mahogany Bay in Roatan, Honduras; and Cozumel, Mexico.
Your Entertainment The fun begins in Tampa even before we set sail. The incomparable Bonnie Raitt will kick off this cruise in port! More than just a best-selling artist, respected guitarist, expressive singer and accomplished songwriter,
Bonnie was named on Rolling Stone’s list of “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.” Thanksgiving is a great week to have lesbian chefs on board! Chef Josie Smith Malave (a Miami native) and Chef Tiffani Faison of Bravo’s Top Chef will be there to share their culinary expertise. This includes cooking demonstrations, cooking tips and—if we’re lucky— secret recipes! A very special guest will also join the cruise—Olga Murray, founder and visionary of the Nepal Youth Foundation (NYF), will talk about her incredible work in Nepal. NYF has rescued over 12,000 girls from Kamlari – a system of indentured servitude in which girls from desperately poor families are sold into
domestic slavery - and has provided them with educational opportunities, vocational training and leadership opportunities. Throughout the week, you will also be entertained by singer-songwriters Cris Williamson and Nedra Johnson; comediennes Suzanne Westenhoefer, Poppy Champlin and Sandra Valls; and Florida natives DJ Citizen Jane and DJ Pat Pat will have you dancing at Club O until the wee hours.
Your Ports of Call Your itinerary includes two Mexican ports. The first, Costa Maya, is an unspoiled coastal paradise filled with Mayan ruins and coral reefs. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can take an

ATV excursion through dense forest filled with butterflies, waterfalls and wildlife. Cozumel Island, the second Mexican port, is one of the world’s premiere dive spots. For those more akin to land, take a ferry across the channel to Tulum where beautiful Mayan ruins sit perched on dramatic sea cliffs overlooking the Mexican Caribbean. Further south in Guatemala, take an excursion to Amatique Beach and enjoy an allyou-can-eat BBQ or visit Las Escobas in the San Gil Hill Natural Reserve and swim under sparkling waterfalls and in freshwater pools. And finally, in Honduras, kayak, dive or snorkel around the southern part of the barrier reef. Then hike along its striking mountainous backbone or visit Iguana Hideaway where you will see giant iguanas roaming freely.

all-woman, all-lesbian vacation. Whether it’s an intimate riverboat cruise to Switzerland and Amsterdam, an African Safari adventure, an all-inclusive resort vacation to Puerto Vallarta, or a cruise with 1,900 lesbians to Australia and New Zealand, you are sure to find an Olivia vacation that’s a perfect fit for you. Olivia also tailors specific programs to different types of travelers. Single travelers meet up at onboard mixers, dances and port excursions, and solos coordinators are there to facilitate friendships for those who are a little shy. For women of color, the Sisters at Sea (on cruises) and Sisters at Play (at resorts) programs bring women together to mingle and participate in special activities. Sisters’ coordinators organize casual meet-and-greets, film screenings and other entertainment that celebrates diversity. And then there’s the entertainment. Olivia brings you the best of the best, featuring artists such as Melissa Etheridge and Indigo Girls, comediennes Wanda Sykes and Whoopi Goldberg, special guest Edie Windsor, worldclass athletes Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova, and even financial expert, Suze Orman. Womenfest 2014:
The Perfect Way to Enjoy Key West! Just before the school year starts in earnest… just as the last rays of summertime finally set… just before the holiday season begins to rev up… Key West welcomes women from across the globe to an annual celebration that has become one of the largest gatherings of lesbians and friends in North America—Womenfest! Each year thousands of ladies come together over the Labor Day weekend and stay for a wide range of activities and events during four days of revelry and fun. This year’s schedule includes concerts and live entertainment with noted performers like Hunter Valentine, Sandra Valls, Gloria Bigelow, Julie Goldman, Sister Funk and Raven who play to sold out audiences. A beach party, pool parties at noted guest houses, the always popular “Commotion on the Ocean” boat parties and a “Dancing on
Duval” block party will provide daily fun and opportunities to meet friends old and new. To inspire the intellect there will be tours, lectures and studio demonstrations as well. Key West boasts restaurants that offer remarkable cuisine year round, watering holes that offer authentic, tropical libations and shops that can’t be found anywhere else.

¿Acaso yo no tengo derecho a tener pareja? A mi hermana si le aceptan el novio pero
a mi no me aceptan a mi novia... ¡wtf!
¿Acaso yo no tengo derecho a tener pareja?

Lyme Light by Natalie H.G. London This fantastic, offbeat memoir by indie rocker Natalie H.G. London is a raw look at life with Lyme disease. She gets through it, in part, by watching old 90s sitcoms such as Roseanne and Beverly Hills 90210. Natasha Lyonne from Orange is the New Black narrates the book trailer and in May 2014, there was an amazing L.A. benefit concert with The All American Rejects and others. Lyme Light takes memoir to a whole new level; this woman is a bada**.

Tangled Roots by Marianne K. Martin This historical romance by three-time Lambda Literary Award finalist Marianne K. Martin (Under the Witness Tree; For Now, For Always; Mirrors) brings us the prequel to Under the Witness Tree. Tangled Roots follows the early 20th century love story between Anna, the daughter of a white, land-owning family, and Nessie, the child of black farmers. This multi-layered epic story of two women struggling to be together amid the dangerous racism of the South is at once gripping and graceful.

scopes AQUARIUS JAN 21 - FEB 19 Your usual cool demeanor is about to get a burst of heat as summer delights entice. Add your sudden ambition to get started on your newest idea yet and you’re going to find yourself very busy. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Try to balance the things you want to do with what you have to do. Be grateful that you have choices to make. Your competitive nature has been triggered, so don’t be surprised at your choices.
leo July 23 - aug 22 You get to reinvent yourself and take center stage as your self-imposed exile comes to an end. You have the planetary green light to expand your sphere of influence as you network yourself. Make your goals known to those in a position to help you achieve them. Be authentic and use your charming personality to get your point across. Convince others to follow your leadership. The results will be rewarding.
pisces feb 20 - mar 20 You are highly motivated to improve the quality of your life on all fronts. You’ve been feeling closed off from what’s been going on in the world, as you’ve been focused on solving issues confronting you. One major issue is your dissatisfaction in your love life. In order to get more, you need to give more and be clear about what is required. Restructuring relationships results in stronger, more lasting, mutually satisfying unions.
virgo aug 23 - sept 23 Reflection on the recent past dominates your thoughts, as you seek to understand your part in creating your current situation. Even the best situation will benefit from some fine-tuning. The only thing you can really control is your own actions, so seek and identify where you can make the necessary adjustments to ensure your future success. New self-awareness produces an improved version of the already wonderful you.
aries mar 21 - apr 20 You can finally break free from the past two years of work and frustration as the planets shift you into a regenerative mode. Playful, spontaneous energy prompts your healing. Give in to spending time, energy and hard-earned cash on pleasurable pursuits. Create balance by making better choices about how you conduct yourself and use resources. You have the opportunity to envision the quality of life you wish.
libra sept 24 - oct 23 The planets are empowering you to move forward with projects that have been figuratively all dressed up with nowhere to go, until now. Re-energize your allies and combine business with pleasure. Do what you really want to do now, not just what you have to do. Use this time to lay a solid foundation for future plans, even while enjoying romantic-comedy adventures. Be mindful of your cash flow and don’t overdo anything.
taurus apr 21 - may 21 Most of your focus is on relationships with your significant other. The planets urge you to indulge your artistic whims and give you the courage to finally break free of emotionally draining relationships. Declare your independence from outside control and make better choices. Once free from negative people and self-talk, be open to all the new people clamoring for your attention. Be ready to take new opportunities.
scorpio oct 24 - nov 22 The planets are challenging you to handle the frustrations that mark this cycle. Your tools are selfawareness and considering the needs and wants of everyone involved. Make positive changes in how you interact with the rest of the world. If you can get out of your own way, the obstacles will turn into even better opportunities to achieve your goals. So use this energy to create compromise and cooperation.
gemini may 22 - june 21 Planetary muses are perched on your shoulders, whispering into both Twins’ ears, pushing your focus towards more creative expression. Thoughts have energy and power. Anything you focus on will take on a life of its own, so make sure you exercise self-control. Enjoy exploring your neighborhood. Seek new experiences and connect with people who might offer new opportunities to increase your sphere of influence.
sagittarius nov 23 - dec 21 You are gifted with a special invitation from the Universe to get your ideas out into the world. Have faith in this empowering energy and dare to have adventures again. Use your gift of gab to win support and help further your agenda. Back up your great ideas with well researched and thought out suggestions. Take the time to create a doable action plan.
cancer June 22 - july 22 The planets have had more than enough of your negative self-talk and stagnant career. They have decided that all of your night-and-day work has got to undergo a major shift. Reverse your tendency to put work before pleasure and make up for the imbalance of the past. Watch your spending. Eventually, the planets will move back into a more practical pattern. Your efforts and skills will be recognized and properly rewarded.
capricorn dec 22 - jan 20 The planets have finally caught up with your ambitions, empowering you to think bigger than ever before. You are about to enjoy a complete financial, emotional and sexual regeneration. Tell everyone about your grand plan, but be discreet about the details. While business and pleasure can be a good mix, things can go sour quickly when you combine friendship with profitsharing. Make sure everyone is on the same page, then make them initial and date anything they sign.
