The comment read, “Isn’t it funny how we sustain the stereotypes we fight so hard to break?” I thought for a moment and realized how true that comment really is. Let’s break it down a bit. You know the old joke, “What does a lesbian take on a second date? A U-Haul!” Stereotype that we fight to break, right? Well, why? I mean the reality is that jokes, by nature, are simply an exaggerated form of the truth. So yeah, we do tend to get into relationships quicker than others, but we do that because as women, we don’t have a problem with the idea of commitment! Maybe it sounds like a generalization, but most men prefer the idea of being able to do whatever they want, with whomever they want, whenever they want. As a result, men are more likely to avoid committed relationships for as long as possible. And poor straight women are stuck with a pool of prospects filled with those men. When you take two women, who have no commitment issues, that seriously dig each other, why wouldn’t they be willing to not waste time getting into a real relationship? Another good one is, “Lesbians all have multiple jobs.” You know what? We do! I have interviewed and read stories of more lesbians than you can imagine over the years. Virtually all of them, and all the lesbians I know, have their hands in multiple projects and jobs. We have our day jobs, but we also do things like volunteer with non-profit organizations, parent our kids and participate in community programs. I do my job with She, am the President of my HOA, produce all the events in the community where I live, parent our kid, and do some bookkeeping on the side, so I can exercise that side of my brain. My normal day consists of at least four different hats, and I am proud to wear every one of them! Judy Shepherd, a gay woman from our community here in South Florida, left us in July, after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. In the ten-plus years I knew her, she worked tirelessly with the Stonewall Archives, the local Pride Center, the Women’s Alliance, Lavender Events, Women In Network, organized yearly holiday toy drives and school supply drives and worked with countless other organizations and events. In any conversation with Judy, she would don hats for each of those “jobs” to get the support every one of them needed, and whether it was four hats or ten hats in one day, she wore every single one of them with pride. “Isn’t it funny how we sustain the stereotypes we fight so hard to break?” Yeah, it is, but I have to say I am damn glad we do. My thanks go to Judy Shepherd, for all the sustaining she did while she was with us and to all the other women out there who are following suit. Sometimes, a stereotype is nothing more than the truth. And truth is something we should always wear with pride. See you next month.

For those of us left holding our breath by the first season finale of Grimm, the second season premieres on Monday, August 13 at 10pm on NBC. Wait! Is the woman in black really Nick’s dead mom? Is Adalind going to succeed in her revenge plot that has Juliette black eye-balled and down for the count? Will super-sexy Jamie Ray Newman be back this season? I can’t wait to find out!

Known for her rapid fire wit and unabashed commentary, Kathy Griffin is back with a double scoop of salacious celebrity gossip in Kathy Griffin: Pants Off and Tired Hooker. Get ready for a wild ride behind the scenes of Hollywood as only Kathy Griffin can reveal! This uncensored double feature of Griffin’s latest Bravo comedy specials will be released for the first time on DVD on August 7.

Just when you thought there might not be a cool Disney flick this summer, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring She fave Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgerton and CJ Adams, hits the big screen on August 15. A childless couple buries a box in their backyard, containing all of their wishes for an infant. Soon, a child is born, though Timothy Green is not all that he appears.

Packed with over a dozen sensational career-spanning hits and two new chart-topping songs, Dance Again…The Hits, marks Jennifer Lopez’s first-ever greatest hits package. The stellar new tracks are “Goin’ In” (featuring Flo Rida) and “Dance Again” (featuring Pitbull). The deluxe edition includes the bonus tracks “All I Have,” “Que Hiciste” and “Let’s Get Loud,” plus a DVD with all the smash videos.

Mary McDonnell, come on down! In the new TNT spin-off series Major Crimes, premiering August 13 at 10pm, the team is still reeling from the departure of Brenda Leigh Johnson and the realization that Captain Raydor is now in charge. Raydor is determined to lead with a more team-oriented approach, while trying to gain the trust of those who aren’t quick to forget her long history of investigating them.

not to be missed: For A Good Time, Call…, starring Ari Graynor, Lauren Miller and Mimi Rogers. Former college frenemies Lauren and Katie move into a fabulous Gramercy Park apartment, and in order to make ends meet, the unlikely pair start a phone sex line together. August 31.

in the news The first of its kind Lesbian Political Action Committee Launches A group of activists and donors launched LPAC mid-July. The values-based committee sets out to positively influence policies that impact women by electing candidates who champion issues that impact lesbians and their families. After decades of being a small subset of players in women’s rights and LGBT rights political efforts, the women of LPAC are stepping up to get organized like never before, aiming to give lesbians a real and meaningful seat at the table. With significant resources, LPAC plans to make a true impact for lesbians in the 2012 election cycle and beyond. LPAC plans to take advantage of the dramatic window of opportunity that exists to counter this onslaught of attacks by electing strong pro-women candidates to office. LPAC will support candidates who champion a range of issues that impact lesbians and their families, Democrat or Republican, male or female, gay or straight. These values include: -Ending discriminatory treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals and their families; -Protecting access to reproductive freedom and quality healthcare; and, -Furthering social, racial, and economic justice for all Americans. LPAC will give directly to federal candidates and will also engage in key city, state, fed-

eral, and ballot campaigns through independent expenditures. LPAC is working with both women’s and LGBT political organizations in order to be most strategic and effective with its resources. Members of itsAdvisory Board are:

• Sarah Schmidt – Chicago, IL –Chair and treasurer of LPAC and founder and principal of Sarah Schmidt Consulting, LLC. • Valerie Berlin – New York, NY – Co-Founder and Principal at BerlinRosen Public Affairs, a strategic communications and political consulting firm in New York City and Washington, D.C. • Emily Giske – New York, NY – A government affairs specialist for Bolton-St. Johns, LLC. • Laura Ricketts – Chicago, IL – Director and part owner of the Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball Club as well as Chairman of the Board of Chicago Cubs Charities. • Alix Ritchie – Fort Lauderdale, FL– Media strategy consultant and former founder, owner, and publisher of the Provincetown Banner, a community newspaper for Cape Cod. • Margaret Traub – Brooklyn, NY – President & CEO of Adesso a company that designs, manufactures, and sells contemporary home décor. • Urvashi Vaid – New York, NY – Director of the Engaging Tradition Project at the Center for Gender and Sexuality Law at Columbia Law School.

Target promotes wedding registry for same-sex couples but refuses to take stand on marriage Just weeks after it announced it was selling greeting cards nationwide to celebrate same-sex unions, Target stores is now inviting gay and lesbian couples to set up wedding registries in their stores. The retailer is running a new campaign entitled, “Be yourself, together,” featuring two grooms, and an invitation to “Build a Target Wedding Gift Registry as unique as the two of you.” Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder said in a statement, “The Target Wedding Registry advertising campaign is designed to each all guests and represent the diversity of communities we serve.” The registry is the latest move by Target to appeal to the LGBT community following a series of gaffes in 2010 and 2011 when the retailer drew backlash for a $150,000 donation it made to a political action group backing Tom Emmer, the failed Republican gubernatorial candidate who opposed gay marriage. The Minneapolis-based retailer, however, said it plans to stay neutral on the issue of marriage equality, and refuses to take a position on a proposed amendment to the Minnesota state constitution that would define marriage as between “one man and one woman.” “We recognize that there is a broad range of strongly held views on the Minnesota marriage amendment,” said Snyder, in a statement. “Consistent with our longstanding support of civic engagement, we strongly encourage our team members to exercise their right to vote in November.” SHE - 14 - 08/12

Sally Kristen Ride, Ph.D., Trailblazing First American Woman In Space, 1951 – 2012 Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, died Monday, July 23rd at the age of 61, following a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Sally was born on May 26, 1951, in Encino, California, and she spent her childhood there. As a young girl, Sally was fascinated by science. In 1977, Sally already had degrees in physics and English from Stanford University and was about to finish her Ph.D. in physics when she saw an ad in the Stanford student newspaper saying that NASA was looking for astronauts. NASA selected Sally as an astronaut candidate in January 1978. Sally’s astronaut training included parachute jumping, water survival, weightlessness, radio communications, and navigation. She enjoyed flight training so much that flying became one of her hobbies. During the second and third flights of the space shuttle Columbia, she worked on the ground as a communications officer, relaying messages from mission control to the shuttle crews. She was part of the team that developed the robot arm used by shuttle crews to deploy and retrieve satellites. In August 1979, after a yearlong training and evaluation period, Sally became eligible for assignment as an astronaut on a space shuttle flight crew. She was selected as a mission specialist for mission STS-7 aboard the shuttle Challenger. When Challenger blasted off from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on June 18, 1983,

Sally soared into history as the first American woman in space. The mission lasted 147 hours before Challenger landed on a lakebed runway at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on June 24. Sally retired from NASA in 1987. “Sally’s historic flight into space captured the nation’s imagination and made her a household name. She became a symbol of the ability of women to break barriers and a hero to generations of adventurous young girls. After retiring from NASA, Sally used her high profile to champion a cause she believed in passionately—inspiring young people, especially girls, to stick with their interest in science, to become scientifically literate, and to consider pursuing careers in science and engineering. In addition to Tam O’Shaughnessy, her partner of 27 years, Sally is survived by her mother, Joyce; her sister, Bear; her niece, Caitlin, and nephew, Whitney; her staff of 40 at Sally Ride Science; and many friends and colleagues around the country,” is part of announcement published on her website. In a statement released by the White House, President Barack Obama said that Ride “inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars, and later fought tirelessly to help them get there by advocating for a greater focus on science and math in our schools. Sally’s life showed us that there are no limits to what we can achieve, and I have no doubt that her legacy will endure for years to come.”

“I didn’t really think about it that much at the time, but I came to appreciate what an honor it was to be selected to be the first (American woman) to go into space.” Photo credit: NASA

Born in Jamaica, Diana King, is a star with a combination of unparalleled vocal power and passion, and a down to earth jeans and t-shirt charm to spare. With her trademark blend of genres, this singer/songwriter/producer truly expresses herself with songs that not only showcase her vocal styling but highlight her skills as a lyrical storyteller. Her cover of “Say A Little Prayer” in My Best Friend’s Wedding, her version of “Treat Her Like A Lady” with Celine Dion and her “L-L-Lies” #1 hit on the Reggae R&B and Dance Billboard charts worldwide are some of her most popular songs. We recently spoke to Diana, who currently lives in Coral Springs, FL, about her coming out, music and what’s ahead. Who were your musical influences growing up?

My first love is Reggae, but I was drawn to the R&B vocals of singers like Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, Anita Baker and Teena Marie be-

cause my range could relate to theirs. Vocally, there was no other female artist at home that sounded like them or me. When I started writing my own songs, they came out like “mongrels,” a strong brew of genres, and I love that sound. Who are you listening to now?

I still listen to a lot of old school stuff, especially R&B/Soul. I put them on and sing them out loud. It’s how I practice my vocals, too, because singers hardly sing like that anymore. I keep myself up-to-date with everything that is happening from all genres. I love Damian Marley, Adele, Coldplay and house music. I’m guilty of listening to my own music a lot, though. It’s my way of staying true to the music in my soul and not getting caught up or influenced by what the charts say I should sound like. As an artist, how do you feel when you see the films and hear how your music is used within them?

I feel great pride, one that never goes away.

I never get tired of singing those songs. Every time I watch a movie or someone tells me about it, I sit there just grinning like a teenager. I have a lot of ‘firsts’ behind my name as a female artist from Jamaica, and it’s always fulfilling to represent in a positive way. You now do quite a bit of work in Japan. What do you think are some of the differences between the musical markets in the U.S. and Japan?

Yes, I tour Asia and Europe a lot. Japan holds one of my biggest fanbases and the first difference I noticed was that there was only one chart, and that chart had every type of music genre on it from artists all over the world. I loved that. As an artist without category it felt just. So many of my songs have been #1 over there. The closest to that format in the U.S. is the Pop chart. Still, so much great music is overlooked here, especially from indie artists. You recently made the choice to come out. What drove you to do that and why is now the right time for you?

The whys could fill a book, but love is a big one. Love for myself and the ones I love. I honestly thought I would take it to my grave, but my need to be 100% authentic in this life was greater and my desire to be of service and a part of positive change was stronger. I have always kept it real. I go inside for many of the answers I seek, and I didn’t want anyone else to tell my story. On June 28th, 2012, it dawned on me that I had a responsibility just like I do with music to represent with honesty, even if it meant never singing another song or never returning home. I felt my soul break apart as I watched my partner of seven years pack up, leave our home and move back to Jamaica because we are not married and even if we were, I cannot file for a change of status like straight married couples do. I also got weary of being silent and cringing inside every time a fellow artist or fellow Jamaican would say something homophobic, knowing that I am one of my country’s most successful and admired international artists. Most importantly, it was my way of moving forward in my own spiritual growth.

been the feedback and how do you feel about any negative repercussions in your career and those close to you?

In your official statement, you said that your biggest “regret is that I didn’t come out earlier...” Did culture play a part in that, aside from your career?

It’s not easy, especially if your life is at stake. No one should dictate when a person should come out, but if you desire change, it is necessary and the right thing to do, especially if you are someone in the public eye because we are everywhere. It boils down to what motivates you and what you really need out of life. Money doesn’t fulfill you. You can deny it all you want as long as you want, but your true self never stops poking and nagging you until you set it free to fly. So I’d say, be you! There is absolutely nothing wrong with you. Let no one define you. You are just as deserving and just as worthy.

Very much so. It’s a weird type of deep mental scarring that can go unnoticed for years. I didn’t even realize it was there. I felt something but I couldn’t name it, so I ignored it. I saw myself getting more and more solitary and less of who I am because of it. As a free spirit, I felt caged and began to feel like I was dishonoring myself. You know, some people still believe that being LGBT is a mental disease. But I believe if we are mental, its homophobia that drives us mad. Whenever I went home to visit, it was all too real: men being beaten and murdered and women beaten and raped, sometimes repeatedly as a way of correcting or fixing them. Nothing was ever said or done about it. I had my own stories, but when I would go to the secret LGBT social happenings, I would meet people and hear their stories. I started to see something in their eyes that was more than just them being fans. They felt proud that I was one of them. But then, what good does that do in the struggle if it’s a secret? I realized that I was afraid, not about who I am but about the possible negative causes. I’m happy that I finally chose courage over my fears. Now that you have done it, what has

I don’t worry about such things anymore. I was never a material girl. I didn’t come out for applause, reward or for anyone’s approval. I didn’t even realize I would be the first Jamaican singer to do this. I do give in to my humanity at times and a bad comment may ruffle me for a minute, but I do not stay there. I know that people react from the level of their own consciousness. I’m just filled with humility and gratitude. The feedback has been 95% positive, so I focus on that. I didn’t know what to expect. I’m not unique in the sense that you always want to please the people at home - I call it the “patriotic curse.” I had spent sleepless nights talking to myself about hitting that ‘publish note’ button on Facebook, and I’m glad I didn’t chicken out because I now know fully what “The Truth Shall Set You Free” means. What can you say about coming out to someone who might be in a similar situation?

What is on the horizon for you now?

Sunshine. I’m guessing more of what I love to do, write, sing, travel, perform, and spread love and good vibes. I’m an indie DIY (Do It Yourself) artist now, releasing my music on my own label, ThinkLikeAgirL Music. All that is challenging to say the least. It’s been a dream of mine to own my intellectual properties so I’m very happy about that. I’ll go wherever that leads. Some people make long-term plans, but I honestly don’t. I do whatever feels right and I go with that flow, my flow. I stay in ‘child mode’ when it comes to that. I’m always ready to learn, to be surprised, awed and swept away by the beauty that I see. I’m always open to the unknown of being all I was born to be. www.dianakingdom.com

From left to right: Laura Petracca, Kiyomi McCloskey, Somer Bingham & Veronica Sanchez.

Like all great love stories, Hunter Valentine’s began in a dark, crowded bar when girl met girl and an unbreakable bond was forged over cheap beer and rail whiskey. Originally from Canada, its lead singer, Kiyomi McCloskey was looking for a drummer and found her rhythmic soul mate in Laura Petracca. Also part of the band is Veronica Sanchez on bass and Somer Bingham as guest keyboardist. Eight years, two record labels, and three studio albums later, the band has solidified their line-up, put down roots in Brooklyn, and grown their fan base steadily across North America and the globe. Touring 200+ dates a year, you can see them as part of the east coast cast of The Real L Word Season 3 on Showtime.

We recently spoke to Hunter Valentine’s sexy lead singer, Kiyomi, going back to their beginning years, TRLW and upcoming plans. For those who are new to your music, how did you come up with the name Hunter Valentine?

We wanted to create a fictional character that sort of encompassed a James Dean heartbreaker type. A lot of our songs at the time were about heartbreak or breaking hearts and we felt like this character’s world could live through these songs. Years later, we have moved away from the idea of this character and Hunter Valentine really just represents a straight up, no bullsh*t, rock’n roll attitude.

How hard was it for you girls to stay focused on the band before getting signed to your record label?

We are a band that really believes in hard work and dedication. When we first started we rehearsed 6 nights a week, even if we didn’t have a show coming up. We continue to work that hard to this day. We have never put our focus on getting that “big deal.” If you build your audience and your skill, the business people will follow, and that’s exactly what happened! As you tour through different cities, have you found audiences’ reactions to your music are different from place to place?

will come out on our new album. This song is basically our “It Gets Better” statement, and I hope it can be a helpful message to queer youth around the world. Did you have any bullying problems while in school? If so, how did you handle them?

I was lucky enough not to have bullying problems. I went to school in a very urban, open-minded neighborhood. My high school was only a few blocks away from the gay village in Toronto, so that kind of combated any homophobia that existed in the school. Going back to your music, is there an adjustment process for all of you when a new member joins the band?

Definitely. Certain cities have certain personalities. You could play New York expecting it to be the most wild show ever and people stand there too cool for school and then go to Boise, Idaho and feel like you could crowd surf in the audience because people are so amped. You really never know what kind of reaction you are going to get on any given day, and that’s part of what makes performing live so thrilling.

There is absolutely an adjustment period. We had the same members in Hunter Valentine for more than seven years. To bring someone new into that equation definitely shakes things up a little, but it’s fun and exciting to work with new and different musicians.

What has been your hardest show so far?

This writing process was a little different from other records. We took a few months off to really zero in and write every day as a band. After we had a good amount of songs, we brought them up to Canada and began fine tuning them with our producer Greig Nori. Greig was great at deconstructing the songs and really helped shape the arrangements of this record. In the end we had too many songs that we loved, and it was very hard to pick what ended up on the record!

That’s a good question. I think that the hardest shows have been when there are major equipment breakdowns. When your gear breaks in the middle of a show, there is definitely a feeling of helplessness. I can’t remember the last time that happened, but it sucks when it does. How do you feel you have grown since the band formed in 2004?

As four different musicians, how do you come together when it’s time to decide on new songs for new album?

I think the band has become a lot more well-rounded. We have really learned what we are good at and what we need to work on. The songwriting has become a lot more complex and the arrangements have more layers. I am really proud of how far the band has come.

How did TRLW opportunity come about?

Years later, how do you remember the struggling years and what did you learn from those times?

Where you a fan of the series before being part of the show?

We have learned that the most important thing is to focus on the positive. You can’t dwell on negative feedback or reviews. The most important thing is always your fans. Without them you are nothing.

We are all pretty busy traveling with the band and don’t have much time for TV. We all knew of the show and had seen a couple of episodes before.

Online, Hunter Valentine is often referred to as “the lesbian band.” Did you expect that and does it bother you?

What are your expectations for Hunter Valentine during and after the series?

It doesn’t bother me, because I am proud of my community and feel very lucky that we have had the queer community’s support from the very beginning. I don’t like being pigeon-holed, but of course I don’t resent that label.

Our goal has always been to play for as many people and in as many places as possible. Our expectations after The Real L Word are to be able to achieve that goal. We are extremely grateful for the platform of exposure that the show has given us and intend to take full advantage of it.

Music definitely has an influence on people. What do you want your fans to take away from your lyrics?

What would you say to young girls who want to make it in the music business?

I would like fans to take away that life has its challenges and struggles, but if we are strong and honest with ourselves, we can overcome and end up on top.

I would say, work hard, don’t give up and focus on the positive. You are going to come across times when you feel defeated and you are going to come across times that you feel unstoppable. You need to remember that these ups and downs are all a part of the ride and to take it all in.

Being lesbians/musicians/young in the public eye, how do you feel about the different anti-bullying campaigns to educate the young/older generation?

I think that it’s really important as a public figure to address the issues that live within our community. We have had a very rough couple of years with youth suicide in the LGBT community and the campaigns that were built did a great job to create awareness of this on a mass level. Our recent contribution is a song called “Nowhere To Run” which

TRLW contacted our agents and asked the band to audition for the show. Initially we thought that they just wanted to shoot at one of our shows. We had no idea that they actually wanted to cast us.

Are you all big on the social pages, getting back to fans, etc?

I love talking to fans. My friends are always surprised when they see me chatting on Facebook to fans. I just think that it’s really important to stay connected. I also love meeting new people and talking to them, so staying in touch with my fans is a fun part of my job. What’s ahead for the band?

We are about to put out our new record Collide and Conquer and then start touring to promote it in September/October. We are really looking to play shows in every corner of the world and hope to achieve this with this album.

If you’re a lesbian, and you’ve been to stand up comedy shows or have a favorite lesbian comedian, the chances are this lady produced the show, the TV special or the film. Meet event coordinator, producer and director Andrea Meyerson, returning to WomenFest with Curiously Strong Comedy, as well as her new film I Stand Corrected. You’ve been making us laugh for so long with Laughing Matters and Laughing Matters…More, One Night Stand Up, Fierce Funny Women and Pride Comedy Jam, just to name a few. How did you start producing film?

Ten years ago I was involved with LA’s OutFest, working with a lot of non-profits who wanted to be involved with the LGBT community. I had my organization Women On A Roll and would produce events. I got to meet filmmakers and started getting very passionate about LGBT films. I was already producing lesbian comedy shows at the time, and Ellen and Rosie had both just come out. The world thought, “Oh, these are the only two lesbian comics out there?” I loved them and the path they took. But, here I was working with talented, funny

women who were never in the closet and never rose to that level of fame because of it. I really made my first movie [Laughing Matters] to pay tribute to the pioneers of lesbian comedy because they never lied about who they were. We premiered at Frameline in the Castro, and I’ll never forgot driving up in a car, with Kate Clinton, Karen Williams, Suzanne Westenhoefer and Marga Gomez, and seeing this line of people in front of the theater. We were like, “What’s going on there?” and realized it was for our movie! Our next screening was at OutFest and it won the Audience Award. Here it is ten years later, and I still get people who write and say how much it has helped them. I can’t think of a better job, really— traveling all over, laughing for a living. What do you look for when you’re putting together a comedy show?

I started producing 15 years ago, and there were only so many comics who were out and working. Now, there’s just so many and they’re all out! I mean, look at Kate McKinnon, an out lesbian on Saturday Night Live and Fortune Feimster on Chelsea Lately. It’s a different world now. And thank God! I see young LGBT performers and comics and think

“Whoa! Where did they come from? How did I miss this?” When I was casting for the most recent Laughing Matters…Next Generation, I was blown away at how much talent is out there. When I was casting for Laughing Matters years ago, there were four out lesbian comedians! It was a no brainer! When you’re casting or scouting, are you looking for something in particular?

Funny. I want funny. I like someone who brings uniqueness to the stage. [She should be her] own brand and polished enough to not choke when the cameras come on. You’ve been running Women on a Roll since 1995. You’ve been to some spectacular places and planned some very cool activities. Do you have a personal favorite trip?

I have special memories from each trip. We used to do Cambria Women’s Weekend, off the central coast of California. It was fabulous, 300 women together all weekend. Our Costa Rican trip was extraordinary. I do love when we do the smaller trips, like taking 2050 women off to see the world. It’s a little easier to see and do more with a smaller group. I like the intimacy of these smaller trips. I take

SHE - 24 - 08/12

a lot of time planning the itineraries and destinations. Peru was absolutely unforgettable. I have really special memories from all of our trips. I want to give these women a five-star trip for a three-star price, so it’s a challenge. I really go to bat with negotiations. If I have to, I just say, “let’s just wait it out, and things will turn around,” and then we can all enjoy it without worrying about costs. All Out Films is so well known now, but I’ll put myself on the line, and ask because I know everyone really wants to know. What exactly does a producer do?

(laughs) Oh my God, Denise! That’s a great question! I mean, if you watch a movie and you see 20 producer credits roll by, you do have to wonder! I produce and direct all my own stuff. Basically, a producer pulls together everything that has to be done, from beginning to end and is in charge of things like the budget and expenditures. I’m self-taught. Then, I’m the director, too, and the director always wants to spend all the money on the project! The producer does everything they have to do to get the project completed. I’m a natural producer, but I love to direct. It’s so much more creative and rewarding. As a director, I spend the money. I’m always over budget. As a producer, I always have to find ways to raise more money. Ultimately, the goal is to put out the best product possible. I’m constantly working those two sides. you’ve introduced us to so many big names in the comedy business. Let’s play a little game. I’ll say a name, and you give me the word that comes to mind when you first saw them perform.

Jackie MonahanL: Hysterical. Julie Goldman: Brilliant. Sandra Valls: Fun. Kate Clinton: Classic. Karen Williams: Original. Suzanne Westenhoefer: Hysterically inappropriate. Chantal Carrere: My newest! Chantal is mind-blowing!

I was lucky enough to see last year’s Curiously Strong Comedy at WomenFest in Key West, and you’re back again this year with a new trio—Chantal, Sandra Valls and Erin Foley. Are there plans for a film?

I’m excited about Key West! This year, I have my new movie I Stand Corrected playing during WomenFest and also the Curiously Strong Comedy show. I Stand Corrected will amaze you. The story is about Jennifer Leighton, one of the most extraordinary, world-class upright bass players ever, who’s played with Woody Herman, Mel Torme and Doc Severinson. She was born John Leighton. She transitioned publicly, about ten years ago while she was touring with Doc Severinson. It’s been about five years in the making. We just premiered it at the American Documentary Film Festival and won the audience favorite for Best Film there. We’ll also be at Frameline and OutFest. It’s my first film outside of the comedy genre. I’m so proud of this work. It’s not just about the transgender part. I wanted to show someone who is living a happy, amazing life… It’s an exciting time, and I’m thrilled to have it screening at WomenFest. So, you started off with a career in sales, then event coordination, producing, directing and even a little acting! Is there a key to success in any one of those fields?

I was a corporate account manager for Fortune 500 companies and a top performer, too. I’ve always had jobs I like. When I started Women On A Roll, it was a hobby because I had just come out and couldn’t find anything to do. It was either bars or softball, and I tried softball. It didn’t go well. (laughs) But I just wanted to have a group to do things with, so I started this bicycling group. I took out a small ad in a lesbian publication, and my first ride had 40 women. The next one had 60. I would always try to put a little social thing together,

so we could talk about what everyone was doing. By the holiday party, there were 300 women there! I think it’s safe to add matchmaker to your resume, too, Andrea.

Oh yeah, a lot of couples have met through Women On A Roll! I’ll assume you’ve had your share of ladies, too, running a social organization like yours?

Well, I have a partner who I love very much. I also decided early on that I wouldn’t date within the group. When I was single, I used to joke that I had the biggest black book I could never use! When relationships between the women didn’t work out, I would start getting emails like “Is so-and-so going to be there,” and I would just hate to get involved with someone and then have it not work out, and be the cause of someone not coming to one of my events. But I have used it to make great friendships. I’ve made some amazing friendships, and it’s a great way to connect. How do you balance everything plus a relationship?

I’m in a long-distance relationship. My girlfriend is in New York and I’m in California. She’s 100% supportive of my work. One of my greatest gifts is when we have down time together, at the same time. You know what it’s like when you own your own business. I would ask what you guys do for fun in your downtime, but something tells me we’ll see the answer in a film festival documentary at some point.

(laughs) You know what? One of our favorite things is just sitting on the couch, watching a movie and eating popcorn. The simple things just don’t happen enough so you make the most out of them when they do. You can view the trailer for I Stand Corrected at www.istandcorrectedmovie.com and check out the WomenFest comedy lineup at WomenFest.com.

obama vs. romney TWO DIFFERENT CHOICES FOR OUR COMMUNITY

In 2010, I went to the White House Pride Celebration on a mission. I wanted to hand President Obama a picture of two little boys who the state of Florida would not permit to be adopted. Their foster father, Martin Gill, and his partner are a gay couple. For that reason alone Gill was prevented from adopting based on a law passed during the height of Anita Bryant-led, anti-gay hysteria. I practiced explaining the story at lightning speed knowing I’d be lucky to get a few seconds of his time. As the President reached out to shake my hand, I offered him the note. He listened, looked at the picture, put the note in his pocket and said his staff would follow up. The President kept his word. His spotlighted the Gill family, as they were at the center of a lawsuit that would prompt the courts to strike down the ban as unconstitutional by September. He invited them to the White House. He included gay parents in Mother’s and Father’s Day recognition. It was one of many promises the President kept to the LGBT community and one of the reason my wife and I are among the millions of Americans supporting his campaign. As a President who values every Americans, President Obama has expanded opportunity, strengthened our communities, and honored our differences so that every American gets

a fair shot and everyone plays by the same rules. President Obama has long believed that gay and lesbian couples deserve the same legal protections as straight couples. Even before his historic announcement that he personally supports marriage equality, he had called for repeal of the so-called “Defense of Marriage Act” and directed the Department of Justice to stop defending this discriminatory law in courts. The President recognizes that there are few moments in our lives that call for greater compassion and companionship than when a loved one is admitted to the hospital. That is why he signed a memorandum supporting hospital visitation rights for LGBT families in 2010. Thanks to President Obama, for the first time, hospitals that participate in Medicare and Medicaid are required to allow LGBT couples the same visitation rights as straight couples. The memorandum also directed HHS to investigate the barriers that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their families face in accessing health care services. President Obama directed his administration to clarify that the Family Medical Leave Act protects the rights of LGBT families to provide care for their children in the event of illness. The President clarified the meaning of “family” to include LGBT relationships, help-

ing to protect bi-national families threatened by deportation, working with the Department of Homeland Security to issue guidance to attorneys with U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement detailing which undocumented immigrants could be deemed a low priority and taken out of the deportation pipeline. The White House and DHS said that LGBT family ties, including those of gay spouses and partners, will be considered as DHS conducts a case-by-case review of the immigrants currently in deportation proceedings. Barack Obama did all these things because a strong family is a strong value of his, just as it is for all of us. This election provides two very different choices for our community. On the one hand is a President who has taken a stand against discriminatory efforts to deny rights based on sexual orientation and gender identity because it runs “counter to who we are as people, and it’s a violation of the basic tenets on which this nation was founded.” On the other hand is Mitt Romney who doesn’t believe in equality for all Americans. Last month, he doubled down on his opposition to both same-sex marriage and civil unions, and he’s pledged to write discrimination into the Constitution with an amendment to stop committed gay and lesbian couples from marrying. This would be the first time we amended the Constitution to discriminate and deny Americans equal rights. Romney’s opposition to civil unions puts him to the right of even President Bush. He would let states ban civil unions and discriminate against gay and lesbian Americans, stopping them from enjoying many equal rights and benefits including: health insurance for their partners and kids, hospital visitation rights, adopting children together and making emergency medical decisions for their partners. Romney opposed repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and said it would be a “social experiment.” He graciously accepted the endorsement of the National Organization for Marriage, and in 2007 even declined to answer whether he thought homosexuality is a mental defect, saying he wouldn’t weigh in because he’s not a psychologist. The choice for people who believe in equality and fairness could not be more clear. President Obama is far from done, but we are the ones who must ensure he has the time to move our country closer to the dream of full equality.

From Pool parties, comedy shows, live concerts, night parties, golf, water sports, Happy hours and more as we celebrate womenfest’s 25 years! For almost twenty-five years, Key West has welcomed women from across the globe to Womenfest Key West, the southernmost party for lesbians and their friends. This year’s gathering is set for Tuesday through Sunday, September 4-9, 2012. Womenfest offers a wide range of activities guaranteed to appeal to a broad range of interests. There’s no registration fee or singlefocus hotel. As matter of fact, many events don’t even charge a cover. All of this on a tropical island that is close to perfect and far from normal! Womenfest has a long tradition of supporting comedy including some of the biggest names in the business. “For the last couple of years, we’ve enjoyed coordinating with Womenfest to feature our Curiously Strong Comedy show,” says Andrea Meyerson producer of the Laughing Out Loud series. “We team up a variety of comedians who have different styles, and I’m delighted that every year their shows sell out and the audience leaves exhausted from laughing!” This year’s all new Curiously Strong Comedy Show features comedians Chantal Carrere, Erin Foley, and Sandra Valls performing on Friday, September 7th, at the San Carlos Institute on Duval Street. From New York’s comedy clubs to HBO and other television specials, these women have worked to develop a reputation as bright, brash, and “freaking hilarious.” And speaking of hilarious, the wildly popular comedian Christine O’Leary returns

to Pearl’s to keep participants rolling with laughter as the host of Pearl’s events, including Speed Dating! The week will also feature the awardwinning documentary that is keeping the independent film circuit buzzing this year, “I Stand Corrected: The Transforming Story of Jazz virtuoso Jennifer Leitham.” Critics have been loving this film about music, dreams, and the drive to become oneself. But it’s the music that sets Womenfest apart! Beverly McClellan, who reached stardom competing on NBC’s The Voice will be performing exclusively at Pearl’s for Womenfest. “We’re delighted to be able to present someone as talented as Beverly McClellan throughout the week,” says Pearl’s owner Heather Carruthers. “We know the women will be blown away by her stunning power and range.” Tickets to McClellan’s performances can be purchased in advance at www.womenfest.com. And just to prove that it’s all about the music, five of Key West’s most popular music venues are hosting Womenfest parties throughout the week – all with live music and none with a cover. Hog’s Breath has been a long-time supporter of Womenfest, and is once again teaming up with the all-girl band Sister Funk which was recently inducted into the Women’s Hall of Fame. The popular bar Cowboy Bill’s is featuring Jennifer Corday and the Cougars throughout Womenfest, and Smokin’ Tuna presents the Amy Lee Band named for and led by the

sax player who got her start with Jimmy Buffet. Schooner Wharf opens Womenfest with local singer/guitarist extraordinaire Raven Cooper, and the always fun Green Parrot closes Womenfest with a doo wop dance party! Of course you can’t visit an island without getting on the water, and there are a lot of women-only opportunities for that! Venus Charters, lesbian owned and operated, offers group and private charters, while Fury Water Adventures and Sunset Watersports will feature live music sunset sails. Looking for a little pool time? There are plenty of opportunities with Womenfest pool parties including the all-welcome kick-off poolside party at Big Ruby’s, the Cornhole & Music Pool Party at the Lighthouse Court, She Magazine’s Beach Blanket Babe & Butch Bash at Bourbon Street Pub, and the clothingoptional, women-only pool parties including the Itsy Bitsy Bikini Pool Party at Pearl’s and French Kiss Recovery Party at Alexander’s Guesthouse. For the sports-minded, Womenfest offers a Golf Scramble and an IWFFA flag football exhibition game, while those looking for a more cultural experience will find painting workshops with The Studios of Key West and a Raw Dessert & Wine Tasting at Old Town Manor. There truly is something for everyone at Womenfest Key West. We will see you there! For more information on lodging, events, and advance tickets, go to womenfest.com.

ABOUT...

SHEMAG & SHE MAGAZINE: Should Chick-Fil-A, or any company, not be allowed to expand their franchises in Boston or Chicago just because they are against gay marriage? Express Yourself... CHAPLIC C—Boston and Chicago and any other city who have gay rights in place and equal marriage rights and want to block a company who hates and discriminates solely on those grounds yet will take our money, you tell me. It’s about time our politicians are starting to say enough is enough. We need more like that. LIEBRA M—Shut them all down, let’s bring in the cows, lol. FANCY M—Why would any city want to bring in haters? There are enough companies to fill their shoes. Maybe if people would grow some & not give them their money, it might make a difference also! They are just the KKK dressed in chicken suits! SHELLY P—No, they should not be allowed. If they cannot respect us then they should not be allowed to expand. ALICIA B—YES SAMANTHA M—It’s a HUMAN RIGHTS issue and they should not be allowed! ARIES S—Would you ask that question had they come out against African American, or Hispanic or inter-racial marriage? Because it is the same. We did not choose to be gay. In fact, by posting that, and asking that question you belittle all of us that are fighting against that bigotry and those who have taken a stand. KIM E—I think there are two threads of discussion. MARGIE B—That’s like building one in Atlanta and saying no blacks allowed. CHANTELLE D—Is the KKK allowed to do what they want? I think not. JULIE S—Actually, the KKK is allowed to operate and run legitimate businesses with legitimate business licenses. And while this is a human rights’ issue, you cannot force a company to comply with your beliefs. On that note, I believe I won’t be buying those damned chicken sandwiches or that yummy coleslaw anymore. ELY C—Of course not. Why would we allow them to continue to spread hate! TINA W—I think that any city has the right to determine what businesses they allow to open within their boundaries, based on numerous factors. But I tend to believe the better choice is to allow residents of the city to make it clear they don’t support that business or their policies, rather than allowing bureaucrats to make that decision for them. A company loses nothing by simply finding a different location. They lose so much more when they open and patrons refuse to support them. KIM E—Isn’t it a magnificent turn of events when the Jewish mayors of 2 of America’s largest cities are giving Chick-Fil-A “the boot?” They’re segregating “OUT” this company when I think the smart move would be inclusion. The last time I recall segregation over religion or homosexuality was during the Holocaust. Ours is a nation born of religious freedom. This is a dangerous and likely unlawful precedent. MAYRA O—Don’t eat there. Boycott. Anyway, it’s really unhealthy. SANDY P—Just like it’s their choice to hate us, it’s a personal choice of each governor, lobbyist, political rep, etc. not to let them sell a product their city. MANU A—You can be against it as long as you treat everyone equally because all human beings have the same rights wether they sleep with a man or a woman. We are all entitled to have our own opinions and our own beliefs, as long as we respect others and theirs and don’t discriminate, then it’s all good and justice.

leo July 23 - aug 22

You’re blessed with planetary good fortune, as you enjoy your life. Plan a trip or plan a party, as well as accept any and all invitations to come out and play with your all of your friends and family. Be sure to consult with your significant others to ensure that they’re on the same page, and that they’ll be delighted at your plans, instead of dismayed.

You’re more than ready for a total make-over. Your cheerful outlook attracts many new fans, as the invitations to come out and play arrive daily. Socialize your way to successfully achieving your current goals. While it is generally acknowledged that you are the ‘Supreme Leader,’ it would be wise to cooperate and compromise, without an emotional outburst.

pisces feb 20 - mar 20 You should allow your imagination to run free. You feel like swimming in the sea of Neptune energy and escaping into beautiful grottos in your mind. However, your real life still needs to be lived in the here and now. Use the introspection to create needed changes in your life. Don’t dwell in the past and enjoy envisioning manifesting your hopes and dreams.

virgo aug 23 - sept 23

aries mar 21 - apr 20

libra sept 24 - oct 23

You have the opportunity to expand your social network. Your creativity is high, as is your sense of adventure. Your powers of persuasion are at full strength, as you prepare to ‘go for it.’ There is no doubt whatsoever in your mind of your success, even when there are challenges to your preparations, just double check and take your time, and be open to adjustments.

You’ll be out and about, turning every social encounter into a networking opportunity. Be sure to include your significant others in your plans. Share your wants and needs, especially the part about the improved cash flow, and then actually listen to suggestions. Be open to revising your game plan, as well as your budget, and don’t spend beyond it.

scorpio oct 24 - nov 22

You’ll be busier than usual, balancing what you have to do with what you want to do. You’ll have plenty of energy to take care of business, and do that DIY project at home. However, you will need to recharge your batteries every now and again. Pay attention to the world outside your head. Look to your friends and family for the support and help you need.

You are dealing with karmic energy from your past, and the lessons you’ve been learning are about to be tested. Meet challenges with an open mind and plenty of patience. Some tact and diplomacy wouldn’t hurt, because the planets and your own past have conspired against a peaceful, uneventful month. Your sense of humor will serve you better than your pride and ego, and you’ll find yourself making progress.

gemini may 22 - june 21

sagittarius nov 23 - dec 21

You have an opportunity to step up to your leadership potential, and show off your skills and business smarts. Enhance your chances for success by honing your communication skills, including the art of listening to good advice. You are often unable to keep your emotions out of your decision-making, and logic flies out the window when it comes to controlling impulse spending, for either business or pleasure.

You’re torn between wanting to give in to your wander-lust and your need for security. The good news is you can have it all, be your own person, and be a productive part of a whole. Dare to be optimistic, even amidst financial challenges, and dare to release old negative patterns and fears. Get creative and imagine an incredible future with both security, and adventure.

cancer June 22 - july 22

capricorn dec 22 - jan 20

Your focus is on your security, your finances, and your sense of self-worth. If you’re willing to put in the hard work, the Universe is happy to provide you with plenty of opportunities for career advancement. Remember it’s often not what you know, but who you know, so network yourself amongst those whose influence can help you. This time, make a budget and stick to it.

You’re intent in revamping your master plan to better suit your current goals. Be confident of your ultimate success, yet stay aware that success will require a lot of hard work and patience. Avoid power struggles, and/or emotional outbursts. Instead, conversation and compromise are the key to ultimately getting what you need and want.

You’re being pulled in many directions at once, as you strive to meet all of the financial and emotional challenges the Universe has thrown at you. The most important lesson is to demonstrate that you’ve finally ‘got’ it. The second most important is to get enough sleep. All your self-reflection leads you to more selfawareness, and more self-actualization in all aspects of your life.
