I don’t have a lot of pet peeves, but the ones I have, I don’t tolerate very well. My number one pet peeve is when someone does a load of laundry and doesn’t move it into the dryer with an hour or so. You know, I pay a lot of money for the exact triple-threat of laundry detergent, fabric softener and dryer sheets that will make my clothes, towels and sheets smell a certain way. So, nothing is more annoying than having all of that wasted because clothes sat in the washer long enough to get that funky, icky moldy smell, except for the utter wastefulness of having to wash that load again. My green friends will completely agree with me about the ridiculocity of all that extra water and energy that is wasted, simply because someone didn’t focus on finishing what they started. But know this, wasteful or not, if it’s been in that washer long enough for that stank to set in, it’s not getting anywhere near me or the baby, until it’s been rewashed. You see? I told you I can get a little b*tchy about these things. Here’s another thing that sets me off: Infomercials. Being a bit of a night owl, I can’t help but notice that, as I am surfing through the guide in search of some scripted, crimefighting acronym show to help me fall asleep, virtually every other channel has some sort of infomercial airing. It’s almost as if all the network geniuses believe that if you are up at 3:00am, then you must have adult acne, wrinkles and fine lines around your eyes, hair loss on your head, excess unwanted hair everywhere else, a muffin top that requires some type of overly complicated apparatus or set of DVDs, or the desire to simplify and perfect the food you prepare or the way you clean your floor. Okay fine, so I have all those things, but that’s not the point! I’m not awake at three in the morning surfing channels to find out how E and F list celebrities get rid of fine lines and facial hair. And I don’t care how many meals I burn or nails I break or muscles that ache from using the products I already own, I am not going to jump up and grab my phone to “act now” because supplies are limited or I can get a second identical item free is I call within the next 26 minutes. It’s not gonna happen— even if there is a lifetime, money-back guarantee (less shipping and handling). Besides those two things, uncovered food in the fridge, repetition, mixing condiments or people who drive with their cellphone on their ear or text/Twitter/Facebook while driving, I’m pretty easy-going. Oh, and mimes. But there are some things I absolutely adore! I love laughter and monkeys and Bluetooth earpieces that allow you to talk hands-free while you are driving or look crazy in the supermarket. I love fresh smelling laundry, drag queens who nail their lip-sync , scripted crime-fighting acronym shows and saying, “Duckbill platypus.” And, I love this month’s issue of She. Our annual Holiday issue is filled to the brim with ways to make this season bright. And, if you act now, we’ll throw in a special bonus gift of our exclusive interview with megasuperstar, Christina Aguilera. No broken nails, achy backs or burnt grilled cheese sandwiches here! Just 40 pages, donned in gay apparel, for you to enjoy. Happy Holidays, my friends. See you next month.

in the news Obama nominates openly lesbian Hispanic judge to federal bench

UCLA School of Law Launches LL.M. Specialization in Law & Sexuality

President Barack Obama nominated Judge Nitza I. Quiñones Alejandro, who currently serves on the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas, for a federal judgeship with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Quiñones would become the first openly gay Hispanic woman to serve on the federal bench. Quiñones previously worked as a staff attorney for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs from 1979 to 1991, and she served as an attorney advisor for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 1977 to 1979. She began her legal career as a staff attorney for Community Legal Services, Inc. in Philadelphia. Quiñones received her law degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Law in 1975 and her bachelor’s in business administration from the University of Puerto Rico in 1972 according to a biography provided by the White House. President Obama has also nominated openly gay Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge William Thomas. Judge Thomas has been nominated to serve on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

UCLA School of Law has launched an LL.M. specialization in law and sexuality—the first program of its kind in the nation. The new specialty will provide rigorous training to emerging lawyers and scholars working in the field of sexual orientation and gender identity law, while enhancing the breadth and depth of legal scholarship related to LGBT issues. “Similar courses and education programs on law and sexuality remain rare in many regions of the country and world,” says Lara Stemple, director of graduate studies at UCLA School of Law. “As law and policy on LGBT issues continue to unfold in our courts and legislatures, this program will provide young lawyers with the tools they need to engage in this dynamic and rapidly changing area of the law.” Already a leader in the field, UCLA Law’s LL.M. in Law and Sexuality will build on the prior work of its faculty and internationallyrecognized Williams Institute, a think tank at the law school dedicated to sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy. The program will include coursework on comparative and/or international law, focused on sexuality issues, including a course on Law and Sexuality and a Sexual Orientation Workshop. Students will also have the opportunity to take classes offered by faculty members and scholars associated with the Williams Institute, as well as participate in a range of Williams Institute activities, such as its speaker series and annual conference. The program, which is open to both U.S. and foreign-trained lawyers who have a J.D. or equivalent law degree, is now accepting applications. www.law.ucla.edu

Couples from across Illinois Urge Passage of Marriage Fairness Law On November 28th, plaintiff couples in Darby v. Orr and Lazaro v. Orr, the lawsuits brought by Lambda Legal and the ACLU of Illinois seeking the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in Illinois, met with legislators to urge them to vote in favor of a bill ending the ban on marriage for same-sex couples in Illinois. “We want our lawmakers to know how important this is to our family,” said Anne Dickey, plaintiff in Darby v. Orr. “Every day, our child feels different from his friends because Laura and I aren’t allowed to get married. Whether it is through the courts or the legislature, we need the freedom to marry.” On May 30, 2012, Lambda Legal and the ACLU of Illinois each filed lawsuits representing a total of 25 same-sex couples from across the state of Illinois seeking the freedom to marry. Two days later, the Illinois Attorney General’s office filed papers agreeing that barring same-sex couples from marriage is unconstitutional. The Cook County Clerk and States Attorney also agree that the marriage ban is unconstitutional. In February 2012, State Representatives Greg Harris, Deborah Mell, and Kelly Cassidy filed HB 5710, the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act in the Illinois General Assembly, which provides that all laws of Illinois applicable to marriage apply equally to marriages of same-sex and different-sex couples. The bill, House Bill 5710, The Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, could be voted on by the Illinois General Assembly in January 2013.

8 TIPS TO

A

STRESS

FREE

HOLIDAY SEASON

It’s the beginning of the holiday season and with the holidays comes stress. Each year we feel a mix of joy and anxiety when we approach the days before Thanksgiving. The holidays can bring stress starting in November and go straight through until the New Year. We experience a combination of stressors related to financial costs of the holidays, family coming to stay and the conflicts it may bring, and the stress of trying to have the perfect meal and holiday all together. If you’re one of those people who feel the pressure of the holidays, here are eight tips to help feel balanced, happy and stress free: 1. rememBer What the holidays are really aBout .

Spending quality time with family, friends and loved ones. It’s about giving love and joy to others. Watch your expectation; make sure they are realistic. We try for perfection during the holidays and we tend to forget what the holidays are really about. Remind yourself that the holidays are about being close to your loved ones while everything else come second. 2. take care of you.

During the busy holiday season we forget about ourselves. We worry so much about setting a nice table; buying and cooking the food; decorating the house; buying the presents; etc., we forget to take a time out and spend some quiet time alone. Yes it’s the season of giving to others, but make sure to put yourself on your priority list and put yourself high up on the list. If we aren’t feeling mentally, physically and emotional healthy, how we will be able to have a good holiday? The more time you put aside for you, the healthier and happier you will feel this holiday season. 3. seasonal disorder.

This is just another issue that can affect people during this stressful time. If you know that the cold weather and shorter days affects you and causes you to have negative moods, then do some preventive work. Talk to your doctor about options, seek counseling before the change of weather and holidays start, set up a support system to help when you’re feeling SHE - 16 - 12/12

down, invest in light boxes and plan a vacation to a warm destination (this will give you something to look forward to). 4. Start early.

Before the holiday season is in full swing, start making your things-to-do lists, start your holiday shopping early this way when the holidays approach you’re not scrambling for presents. Buy wrapping paper, holidays cards, etc. Wrap your gifts as you buy them. Be proactive. Having a lot done ahead of time is a huge stress relief and then you will enjoy going out for any last minute things knowing that the bulk of it is complete. 5. Ask for help.

There is no reason why you have to do everything on your own. Delegate this holiday season. Ask each person who is coming to prepare a dish or a dessert. Make your holidays not about the cooking but more about the socializing. If everyone brings a dish this will make your shopping and cooking much easier. Don’t feel guilty about it. Each year have everyone make it a point to help each other so everyone can enjoy the holidays. This can also be a great way to clean up after the holidays. Delegate the clean up from the dishes to vacuuming the house. If everyone chips in, it won’t be so bad.

things that make us the happiest: good relationships with family and friends, a partner we can share our life with and a full schedule of social activities that involve lots of smiling and laughing. 8. Watch the signs.

Listen to your body. If you are noticing any of the following signs then it’s time to make changes: • Change in sleeping habits • Change in eating habits • Feeling irritable, moody and unhappy • Exhaustion and fatigue • Panic attack symptoms like dizziness, heavy chest, heart racing, headache, feeling nauseous, hot and cold flashes • Physical signs such as headaches, stomachaches, joint pain and low immune system (catching frequent colds and illnesses). These symptoms are all warning signs of too much stress and anxiety in our life. This is a sign to slow down and take a time out.

6. Be up front financially.

Tell family and friends what you can and can’t do early on. If you know this will be a tough financial holiday season, then recommend other options such as: buying for the kids only, a grab bag, the charity option (everyone gives to a charity - whatever they can afford) instead of a gift, play a fun game like Yankee Swap where everyone buys one gift (set a value for it), or learn from our children - homemade gifts! 7. Gratitude.

This is the time of year that we should spend more time counting our blessings, remembering what we have instead of worrying about what we don’t. Instead of “Keeping up with the Jones’s,” take a minute to appreciate the abundance of love, health, family and friends. Teach your kids about abundance. They should know that the most important things in life are the

She TALK The Holiday Season is a time that is filled with joy, love, family and friends. It is also one of the most stressful times of the year and for some can be overwhelming. So, we asked some of our readers to tell us what they do to deal with this seasonal stress or the holiday blues. We got some responses that were useful and funny... Chris S: Kick those blues by not sitting

around alone. There are parties, community events, late night shopping and plenty of other ways to get yourself around other people. Of course, there will be some people there that make you want to poke their eye out with a shrimp fork, but you might just have a little fun in the meantime. Ally E: Do what you can—not what you may feel pressured to do. Ericka A: Find something that is your own thing—not the kids, not the partner— your thing. When the pressure hits, do that thing like you’ll never get another chance to do it again! I go running and it frees me! Crystal W: Margaritas! Cheryl M: Find an old friend from your high school days that will roll you a big fat spleef, then take a hit or two every time you start to feel stressed or overwhelmed. Okay, it’s not all that productive, but it will sure make the Doritos taste good. Denise S: S.E.X. Tay D: I find that baking is a great way to relieve stress. Linda N: If its stress, go with the flow, and remember you are not alone. If it’s the blues, get out of the house and into a movie theater. Denise G: I just promise myself that if I make it through Thanksgiving and Christmas without killing someone or having a total meltdown that I will reward myself with a huge blowout on New Year’s Eve! T’Kia L: Remember, no matter how bad you may think you have it, there are people out there who have it much worse than you. Head over to a soup kitchen or someplace where you can volunteer your time to help others over the Holidays. It will help you remember what the season is really all about.

It’s been a while since you danced in a club or sang along with “Genie in a Bottle” and “Dirty” at the top of lungs, but Christina Aguilera is back, baby, and her recently released, 17-track new CD, Lotus, will have you shakin’ your stuff once again! Having sold more than 30 million albums

worldwide, Christina has been in the studio, for the past year, working on her highly-anticipated, fifth studio album, which also features collaboration with Aguilera’s The Voice co-star, CeeLo Green, on the song “Make The World Move.” We spoke to Christina a couple of days before her

appearance on the American Music Awards— where she performed a medley from her new album—about motherhood, our community and of course, Lotus. Your new album, and the title track are so unique and catchy, and when you

listen to the words it speaks of rising up from the pain and broken pieces to create a new beginning. Can you relate to that with this new release?

All the music I write and create stems from personal experience and that is what I draw from. This album represents a rebirth for me. I’m coming from a rough few years. I think anyone that has been through setbacks can relate. Has being a mom changed the way you approach your decisions on projects and career moves?

Absolutely, and that was one of the reasons to take off Season 4 of the show. Having a child changes your ability to just pick up and go on tour for months on end. To me, it is vital that I am the last person Max sees before bed and the first person he sees when he wakes up. Now, that can’t happen every day as any mom knows, but I try my best to be there. It’s important to me not to let the years slip away. They grow up so fast! I loved that you made Chelsea Handler wear one of your outfits during your interview on Chelsea Lately! You take so much heat for your sense of fashion; does that make any difference to you?

I have never been one to shy away from taking chances, and, as a performer, it’s important to me. I can’t be held back by what people may say or think. I adore Chelsea and she looked hot in those booty shorts. Your fan base is so vast, but our LGBT community really connects with you. I can remember when “Beautiful” came out and it became sort of an anthem for us. What kind of impact does that have on you?

I cannot express in words how much the LGBT community means to me. On my darkest day their support lifts me up. I feel honored that some of my songs become anthems for them as well. Gay men flock to you like a moth to a flame. Your music is thumping through gay dance clubs everywhere and lesbians are dying their hair pink and red. Did you ever think you’d be influencing our community like this?

I always felt a connection to those that were more misunderstood. I feel like the community really gets me. They inspire me as well. You’ve been a part of the entertainment industry now since 1992. How different is it today from when you started out?

...On my darkest day their support lifts me up. I feel honored that some of my songs become anthems for them as well.”

What do you see happening in terms of what audiences are looking for?

So much has changed from what is mainstream these days. I don’t think I will ever fully understand it, but you have to learn to evolve and adapt. Do you ever go back to your earlier work to, as one of your new songs says, “embrace the woman” and entertainer you have become?

Yes. I draw on my earlier work as a building block and a stepping stone to the woman I have become. You need the past to lift you up and remind you of your roots. On The Voice you get to see young, new talent on a regular basis. What does it stir up in you, seeing all those up and comers trying to break into the music scene?

It is so amazing to be a part of someone else’s journey and to know that perhaps one token of advice has helped them become something greater than they were the day before. We’re all well-acquainted with Beverly McClellan, who you worked with during Season One. Do you maintain any contact with your team members and are there any that you continue to work with?

Absolutely. I speak to Bev and I am so proud of the album she put out. I also just spoke to Chris Mann and was actually on his album he released last month. They know that even after they leave the show they will have a fan in me.

You and Adam Levine have this great playful rivalry on the show. What is it like working with him? Does that rivalry continue when the cameras are off?

Adam and I love each other in a very brothersister way. We are both artists and thus emotional, but deep down we only have respect and love for each other. what’s happening in today’s society, right now, that you would consider a turn off or that you want to see change?

I am really disturbed by the bullying of kids. I feel that needs to change. Growing up can be so hard with changes and hormones! The least we can do is be kind to each other. Moving on to your new CD, I have to say, my favorite is “Red Hot Kinda Love.” I am in love with this song! Is there a story behind this song for you?

“Red Hot Kinda Love” is a great track with an old school vibe and beat. It felt very free and carefree to me. Also enjoyed “Army of Me,” “Blank Page” and “Just A Fool.” Which are your favorite songs from this album and why?

I never choose favorites as each track means something different to me. I loved working with Blake on “Just a Fool” and reteaming with Sia on “Blank Page.” You’ve been working on your new album for a year now. Tell us about what Lotus means to you. Does it reflect your private life?

Every album is important to me. If not, why bother making them? They each reflect a part of my life and something personal to me. Can we expect another Spanish album sometime soon?

Absolutely. It is something I have been wanting to do for some time. Tis’ the season! So, what are the holidays like for Christina and Max?

Very festive and very cozy. I love the holidays and all that surround them!

Sometimes vacation settings are thrilling, seductive and exotic. Others are calming, idyllic havens for relaxation. Some places feel like home – they remind you of your true self. But it’s rare to find all these qualities in one place, which is why Provincetown, Massachusetts has become a mecca for women who seek destinations that reflect their own sense of being and personality. Long known for its accepting lifestyle, P-Town celebrates the uniqueness of individual spirit and beauty. With the bounding blue Atlantic Ocean and Cape Cod National Seashore embracing its borders, and a long tradition of encouraging free expression as the pilgrims’ first destination in America, Provincetown has earned its reputation as one of the most beloved LGBT vacation spots in the world. Here you can feel new beginnings at the end of the road, a metaphor for why so many return annually for renewal and friendship. Provincetown has the largest percentage of LGBT residents and visitors of any town in America. An eco-cultural wonder with spectacular shorelines, wildlife, beaches, bike paths and sand dunes, P-Town also offers fine dining, authentic local cuisine, shopping, art treasures and a chance to experience the unique and sometimes bizarre in America’s oldest taverns and show rooms. P-Town constantly wins accolades for welcoming the LGBT community. GayCities and PlanetOut have named it the Best Gay Resort Town. Lavender Magazine called it the “Best Summer Vacation Destination” and the Travel Industry Association of America named it a Top Five Gay Destination. If sunbathing on the shore appeals to you, be sure to put Herring Cove or Race Point at the top of your list. They are among the most popular beaches in the world for gays and lesbians. If camping is your adventure, come early before a glorious sunset to pre-arrange clam and lobster bakes in a sandy spot for a romantic picnic or an evening beach party. P-Town has a diverse calendar full of special dates tailored toward women of all ages and interests, including:

•“Single Women’s Weekend” during the third weekend in May (SingleWomensWeekend.Com). Singles can meet, interact and have fun getting to know each other. • Memorial Day Weekend (ProvincetownforWomen.com) brings thousands of women together to jumpstart the summer season with parties, shopping, dancing, barbeques and boating. • Women of Color Weekend (WomenOfColorWeekend.com) takes place the first weekend in June, with special performances, meet-ups and wine tastings. • Girl Splash (girl-spash.com) features well-known entertainers and other star-studded events during the third week of July. • Women’s Week (womensweekprovincetown.com) starts on Columbus Day, bringing together the best performers and comics in lesbian culture today. And if you can’t make it to one of these special events, there’s an afternoon Tea Dance that packs in crowds daily. Nightlife along Commercial Street provides visitors with numerous options to enjoy music, lesbian comedians, drag shows, unique cocktails, meeting new friends from around the world and singing along with a performer who has been at the Keys for more than 50 years. Since same-sex couple marriage was legalized in Massachusetts in 2004, the town has served as the perfect setting for exchanging vows. A common sight is a bike caddy with two brides waving to applauding street crowds as cans clank away. Provincetown is truly like nowhere else and it is the sweet spot for a perfect getaway with diversity as surround sound. Come see why so many have been seduced by its charm and fallen in love in so many ways…and so many times. For more information visit ptowntourism.com

Born This Way by Paul Vitagliano Born This Way: Growing Up Gay, based on the groundbreaking and popular blog of the same name, is the perfect holiday gift for the pop culture lover in your life. At once a declaration of self-acceptance and a charming picture book of tots who grew up to be LGBT or Q, Born This Way is heart warming and adorable. The photos date from the 1940s to present day, a powerful and timeless reminder that we should never stop celebrating the child within.

Yours For the Asking by Kenna White This sweet and gentle holiday romance by Lambda Literary Award Winner Kenna White tells the story of two lesbian sisters: sensible Lauren runs her own bed-and-breakfast while her vibrant younger sister Kelly has a habit of stealing Lauren’s girlfriends. When the sisters fall for the same woman, Lauren must decide if she’s going to let history repeat itself.

Trevor by James Lecesne Trevor is based on the 1994 Academy Award winning Live Action Short of the same name and is the brainchild of author and Trevor Project co-founder James Lecesne. Lecesne, who originally presented the skit that would become Trevor as part of his Drama Desk award winning one-man show, Word of Mouth, gives us a short and compelling novella of “love, loss, and Lady Gaga” that is rich with wit and humor. Trevor, a charming and exuberant thirteen-year-old boy, plans Lady Gaga-inspired Halloween costumes. On the other hand, he struggles with issues of self-acceptance as his peers bully him and his parents misunderstand him. Trevor is moving, funny, and brave – the perfect book for anyone who has dared to be different – and thrived.

Your spirits are high and it has more to do with all the parties and sharing the good times than with the amount of spirits you’re imbibing. Family and friends mean everything to you. Giving and receiving presents is nice, too, but don’t go crazy showing your love with your credit cards. You have the gift of renewed faith and optimism and it’s contagious, infecting everyone you meet with happiness and hope.

You may wish there were two of you now—one to handle your financial and work responsibilities and another to party with your friends and family. Issues and people from the past will give you the opportunity to reclaim your power. Make appropriate changes in order to ensure your future success and happiness. Take some much need alone time to sort through conflicting needs, wants and emotions.

You are torn between your obligations at home, your responsibilities at work and your own needs. You’ll need to budget your time, energy and finances in order to truly get the most out of the season. Give more of yourself but don’t go crazy with the plastic. Santa may gift you with more financial opportunities so be ready to open the door when opportunity knocks.
