When we were kids, we counted the days until summer. Those three glorious months meant vacations, camp, endless hours of hanging out with friends, no alarm clock in the morning. In a nutshell, it meant freedom and fun—lots and lots of fun. As adults, we tend to lose out on most of that. We work our butts off through all four seasons of the year and forget to take the time for all the fun we could be having. Many of us don’t even have time for fun on the weekends, since those are the days filled with household chores and errands we didn’t have time to do during the work week. We’re busy, busy people these days. I recently heard a story on the news about a study that showed that we are so used to being busy people that we have collectively allowed ourselves to become addicted to being busy. Addicted. Yes, that is what I said. Oh and there was another story I heard about a research study that showed that we are more stressed out at home than we are at the office. All this time we thought it was the greasy burgers and chocolate cake that was creating that puffy belly. Turns out it was really our sky-high stress cortisol levels from not being at work 24/7. Well, when I heard that, it was just about enough for me. So, I decided to take a little time off to have some fun. I cut back a quarter of my workload for the month, so I could hop in the car with my girl and remind ourselves of what summer used to be like. We spent countless hours hanging out with friends. This past weekend, we went to the mountains in New York and spent the day with my brothers, taking the newest generation of kids to the lake we used to visit as children. And tonight, for the first time in almost 20 years, we chased fireflies, sat around a raging fire and made s’mores. (No, we did not sing “Kumbaya.” A girl’s gotta draw the line somewhere.) As I finish off this note to you, we’re packing the suitcases back up to continue our epic twelve-day roundtrip road trip from the southeast corner to the northeast corner of the United States, reliving and recreating the memories of summers gone by along the way. We’re casting our addiction to busyness and work aside, so there can be greasy burgers and chocolate cake galore, without an extra pound to show for it. No alarm clocks. No commitments. Just all the things summer is supposed to mean. In a nutshell, freedom and fun—lots and lots of fun. See you next month.

In short, she’s Scarlett Johansson, kicking butt as this summer’s first female action hero. In theatres July 25.

Flipping the Block is HGTV’s new home renovation show. Four different teams each remodel a run-down condo to sell at auction. The team with the highest sales price walks away with $50,000. The catch? The teams have to live in the condo while it’s being renovated, and, as anyone who’s ever lived through a home remodel will know, nothing makes you want to kill your spouse faster than a half-finished kitchen. Premieres July 20 at 9 pm on HGTV.

No Fools, No Fun is the debut album from country trio Puss N Boots. After playing live shows together for the last six years, Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper as Puss N Boots have put together this 12 track album, featuring five original songs and seven covers. Norah Jones’ latest song, is also featured on the album. Available July 15.

in lgbt history July 1, 2013—Delaware’s Senate decided in

a 12-9 vote to end marriage discrimination. July 3, 1975—U.S. Civil Service Commission

In a historic announcement, U.S. National Security Advisor Susan Rice announced a $2.7 million partnership between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) to encourage and support gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) business owners and entrepreneurs in developing countries. The unprecedented agreement, presented this afternoon at a White House event, holds the promise of creating a more equitable business and cultural environment for LGBT people through economic empowerment. “Unfortunately, in too many places, being gay or transgender is enough to make someone the target of slurs, torments and violence…protecting our LGBT brothers and sisters is among the most challenging human rights issues we face. Thanks to a new partnership between the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and USAID, we will provide business development training and build new networks to help economically empower the LGBT community. And, working together, we can be assured that the future belongs to those who stand up for freedom and human dignity,” said Rice. The initiative creates an avenue for U.S. businesses to become trading and strategic

partners with LGBT owners in program countries Mexico, Colombia and Peru. It also will encourage program country businesses to serve as suppliers to multinational corporations, in-country companies and government agencies, as well as become active in intra-regional trade and team with LGBT-owned businesses in the U.S. to respond to multinational contracting opportunities.

USAID will contribute $1.25 million to the partnership while NGLCC will put forth $2 million in privately raised funds. NGLCC will provide another $692,000 through inkind and program services. NGLCC is the business voice of the LGBT community and is the largest global not-forprofit advocacy organization specifically dedicated to expanding economic opportunities and advancements for LGBT people.

Breast Density in African Immigrant WHAT and African American Women-women WHERE needed for a research study Army of Women, a project of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, needs African immigrant and African-American women, age 45 or older, anywhere in the United States, to participate in a study—conducted by Tomi Akinyemiju, PhD, Columbia University in New York, NY—that is exploring whether race, ethnicity or cultural and lifestyle differences affect breast density. Studies have shown that women who have dense breast tissue (the non-fatty portion of breast tissue, which appears white on a mammogram) are 2 to 4 times more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than those with less dense breast tissue. A woman’s breast density is influenced by her genetics, but it is has also been shown to be influenced by non-genetic and environmental factors. A research team at Columbia University in New York, NY, wants to study mammograms from African immigrant and African-American women to learn more about their specific breast density patterns. In research studies, African immigrants are often categorized together with African-American women. Yet African immigrants may have certain cultural and lifestyle factors that affect their breast density and breast cancer risk.

What’s the study about?

The purpose of this study is to examine the patterns of breast density (the non-fatty portion of breast tissue) among African immigrant and African-American women living in the United States, and to find out factors that affect the amount of breast density in women. The researchers need to enroll 300 women to participate in this study. What’s involved?

If you sign up for the study “Breast Density Patterns in African Immigrants and African American Women,” the research team will contact you to confirm that you are eligible. If you are eligible and choose to participate, you will be asked to do the following: Sign the consent form; Complete a questionnaire (either on-line or over the phone); Request recent copies of mammograms from your healthcare provider and mail them to the research team (at no cost to you). If you prefer, you can sign a medical release form to allow the research team to request your mammograms on your behalf. Who can participate?

You can join the “Breast Density Patterns in African Immigrants and African American Women” study if you match ALL of these MAIN categories: • You are a first or second generation African woman OR an African-American woman • First generation African women: women who were born in Africa and currently reside in the US. • Second generation African women: women who were born in the US to at least one Africanborn parent, and currently reside in the US. • African-American women: women who were born in the US or to US-born parents, and currently reside in the US. • You have had at least one prior mammogram or plan to have a mammogram in the next six months. • You are able to complete an interview, either on-line or over the phone. • You are willing to request your mammograms from your healthcare provider or provide consent for research staff to request them on your behalf. contact: 866/569-0388 • info@armyofwomen.org

because it’s daytime TV, your material has to be clean because you never know what kind of audience you’ll have. But every day we have morning rehearsals and I get a script, so I know if there’s going to be, say, a disco segment and I know I’ll have to get everyone out of their seats dancing. Oh, like wearing an elf costume to distribute gifts that Kathy Griffin was giving the audience! I swear it was a child’s costume that they squeezed me into! As far as the warm-up gig before the show, I do a little prepping. I try and keep it different every time. Sometimes I bring candy to throw out into the crowd, sometimes, I’m rolling around on the floor. In my prep I have to include some stretching! it sounds Like the best gig because it aLLoWs you to be you.

It is. I love that they give me that freedom to keep developing my voice. I’ve always been good at emceeing and hosting different things, like I did the Sweet Cozumel trip and hosted The Gay Games in Cologne, Germany a while back. With this, every single day, I have another group of 200+ people from all over the world to entertain. It’s not the same thing as working in a comedy club. This is so different! The lights are up, you’re very exposed, and every day, it’s like, “Let’s just have fun, pure fun!” and that tone is set by Queen Latifah. i read someWhere that The Queen LaTifah show has been reneWed for another season, Which is fantastic. What kinds of things can We expect to see this year?

Yep! We got renewed for a second season and we start shooting in September.

can you share anything that may be neW, or something We can expect?

Meet your new best friend, Bridget McManus! From The Jeff Probst Show to her current gig on The Queen Latifah Show, this grounded, multi-talented and hilarious comic sat down with us to chat about her amazing career, her adorable relationship with her wife and why Queen Latifah is the coolest celeb on the planet.

We’re kind of having a new production team over there and a new show runner, so things may be a little different, but I’m sure it’s going to be

bridget, it’s been so Long! i’m so excited to be taLking to you! can i just teLL you hoW aWesome it Was this past march When i Was back in fLorida, to turn on the tv and see you there, right in my Living room Where you shouLd aLWays be?

I know! It’s been forever! And aww, that’s so sweet of you to say, thank you! I just love my job. It’s fun and exciting and unpredictable every day. What more could you ask, right? you’re taking the “taLk shoW sidekick” to a WhoLe neW LeveL. you started out on The Jeff ProBsT show and noW you’re on The Queen LaTifah show. hoW did you Land such a sWeet gig? did you audition?

I did have to audition, but some of the people from Jeff’s show actually transitioned over to The Queen Latifah Show, so they threw my name in a hat, which gave me the opportunity to be considered. However, being the warm-up act—which I did for The Jeff Probst Show, and I do for Last Comic Standing—the producers allow you to make a taping of your act. They watch to see how you vibe with the audience and jive with the show. So, I did that, sent in my stuff, they went through their process and they finally picked me. Now, I get to do it every day and it’s just fantastic.

that’s so great! as usuaL, you are so “off the cuff” funny, so i’m Wondering, do you have to prep or prepare jokes and Lines for the Live tapings or is it reaLLy as off the cuff as it appears?

Yeah, so much is playing off the audience. It’s a bit off the cuff and

“I FEEL COMFORTABLE WATCHING MYSELF ON SCREEN BEING FUNNY OR MAKING FUN OF MYSELF. I MEAN, MAYBE IT’S BECAUSE I WAS MOCKED AS A KID FOR BEING OVERWEIGHT SO I GOT REALLY GOOD AT PICKING ON MYSELF BEFORE ANYONE ELSE COULD.”

portray their words correctly. So, for her, she panics when there are no words to read, and for me, I think I’m much better at the loose, improv stuff and making it up as I go along. But as an actor in this business, I continue to work on this. I continue to work on relaxing and being better with words on the page.

You were fabulous in The Throwaways, the web series for TelloFilms.com by the way. It was so interesting to see such a different side of you since I’ve always seen you doing comedy. That was so refreshing and such great work. So, whatever you’re doing to be better at the words on the page, it is totally working.

cooler and even more Latifah! Were you a QL fan before?

(laughs) Uhhh, yessssss! Hello?! Set It Off?! You know what’s so funny is that all over L.A., you hear good and bad stuff about celebrities, but with Queen Latifah, you always hear how nice she is, how genuine she is, how good she is to her staff and the people that work with her. It’s all really true! She is the nicest, most down to earth person. She is totally someone you would hang out with, ya know? She wants to share all the energy and the wealth. She’s invested, she knows everyone’s personal stories and she cares. Every week, she does a gift raffle with the staff and she treats everyone like family. It’s really cool that all the great things you’ve heard about Latifah as a celebrity are all true in real life.

Like we needed a reason to love her more! I don’t know if many people know this, but you’re not only an actress, writer and a comedian, but you’re also an artist!

Yes, I love painting! I even did a couple that were on the The Queen Latifah Show recently! I’ve just kind of tapped back into it as an adult, but as a kid, I used to love painting. My brother and sister were both really artistic and went to art school. I headed off into my own creative direction and one day I was telling my wife how I used to paint when I was little and she was like, “Why not do it now?” So I did. I got started and after about six months, I had pieces featured in some art shows in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Venice. I follow you on Facebook and Twitter and I love when you post pictures of your work. It’s never just an apple and

a water pitcher. There is always some personal touch to what you post.

Thank you! It’s been such a therapeutic tool. I love painting with bright colors, animals and people and it’s so great to just paint for me. I don’t do it for a commission. I do it because I love it. I love giving them to people. I’m not worried about my work being critiqued or judged. you started out in stand-up comedy. Did your career veer into acting or was that always the plan?

I’ve always wanted to be a stand-up, like, we’re talkin’ at the age of four, standing in the living room telling jokes into a turkey baster. I went to New York University for acting, so I love getting into a costume and playing and being a jack ass, but if I had to only choose one thing, it would be stand up because it’s in my heart. I love live performances, getting that vibe from the audience. It reminds me of a great jazz performer that goes into an amazing riff right there and it’s not edited or recorded. In that moment, you are experiencing something special with the audience that’ll never happen again the same way.

Is it hard to change gears from being a comic to auditioning for a dramatic part? Is that hard?

It’s so funny you asked that. I was talking to a friend who has the complete opposite problem. She is always auditioning for dramatic roles and when she does get something that’s sort of improvisational, she totally panics because she thinks she’s not funny. And for me, when I get a script from somebody, I get so paranoid that I’m not going to honor the writer, like I’m not going to be good enough at making this what they want, being scared I won’t

How nice! Thank you so much. I just finished a short film called Mockingbird Sings with Brandy Howard (Bravo TV’s People’s Couch and In Your Box Office with Julie Goldman) and we play a grieving lesbian couple that is trying to reconnect after they experience a miscarriage. It’s screening at Outfest this year on July 14th. It’s so opposite of what I normally do that I don’t think I can sit in with the audience and watch myself cry on screen. I feel comfortable watching myself on screen being funny or making fun of myself. I mean, maybe it’s because I was mocked as a kid for being overweight so I got really good at picking on myself before anyone else could. But playing something intense and dramatic and seeing that raw vulnerability? That’s scary and hard to watch. Or maybe I’m just a weirdo? I don’t know! Let’s discuss your ridiculously cute, totally adorable, socially accessible relationship with your wife of six years, Karman Kregloe. Like I said before, I follow you on Facebook and Twitter. It’s amazing that you let the world in on it and share so much of yourselves. Are there ever any concerns about what you put out there?

Oh God, nooo. Our friend, Trish Bendix, always kids me that I’m obsessed with my wife and I probably am! (laughs) This is going to sound so weird, but you know when you go into a store with your partner and you head off to the left and she heads off to the right? Well, when I finally see her again, a whole 20 minutes later, I get butterflies! She’s the most supportive, crazy amazing woman ever. She’s the bee’s knees and I’ll tell anyone who’ll listen, so no, I’m never concerned about putting that stuff out there on Facebook. Whoever doesn’t like it can just unfriend me because it’s never going to stop. Catch Bridget on The Queen Latifah Show airing on CBS.Check local listings.

For everything to slow down a bit. Life is going too quickly at the moment! Favorite flower: Daffodils. the cartoon character i am most like: Sponge Bob. The weirdest thing i ever ate: Bone marrow. Not my favorite. If you could change your name, what would you pick? I would pick Robyn again! My coming out was: Incredibly pain free and accepting. French Fries, French Vanilla, French Toast or French Manicure?: French Toast. Never had it as good as its

made in America. i think the lgbt community needs: A centralized place

for everyone to find every lesbian thing they are looking for. All the amazing groups, meet ups, nights and community spaces are all disjointed at the moment. I would love to see them all unified. If you were to become an activist in the LGBT community, which organization would you choose and why: NCLR. I’ve been inspired by Kate Kendall and what

they are achieving.

Are you ready to get married? It’s only a matter of time before the State of Florida will be added to the list of states that recognize same-sex weddings. On Tuesday, June 17, the Ft. Lauderdale City Commission approved by a vote of 3-2 a marriage equality resolution supporting statewide action to legalize same-sex marriage. Taking place on August 17 from 1-4pm in the heart of Wilton Manors at Hagen Park, is “Gay Nuptials: A Wedding Showcase for Gay Couples.” This showcase is designed to provide an intimate and com-

fortable event where engaged same-sex couples can connect with potential hotels and vendors to build their perfect wedding. Presented by Panache Style, a Wilton Manors-based floral design and events planning firm and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, the showcase will feature 35 local vendors that offer a wide variety of wedding ceremony services to same sex couples, including venues, catering, flowers, invitations and more. “We are thrilled that the [Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau) understands that gay weddings are an exploding business that will bring a valuable economic impact to our community,” said Bobby Kyser of Panache. “The purpose of this event is to create an awareness of this important business opportunity, as well as to increase understanding of and sensitivities to the couples seeking wedding services.” According to Bernadette Coveney Smith, the author of The Business of Gay Weddings: A Guide for Wedding Professionals, the national gay and lesbian buying power is estimated at $790 billion and gay weddings are expected to continue to grow at a rapid pace. “We are proud to be part of this upscale event, which will help educate wedding vendors and better prepare Fort Lauderdale for same sex couples who want to choose our area for their destination weddings,” said Richard Gray, managing director, LGBT Market for the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau.

gearing up for

The Gay Games are an international sporting and cultural event held every four years. Launched in 1982, the Games invite participation from all athletes—regardless of sexual orientation, race, gender, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, political beliefs, athletic or artistic ability, age, physical challenge or health status. The Games offer a safe environment for LGBT competitors and are open to anyone 18 years or older. Typically, about 10% of participants are non-LGBT, often friends and family who participate to show their support. Cleveland and Akron, Ohio, will host the ninth Gay Games (GG9) from August 9 – 16 2014. This region will join the ranks of San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Vancouver, Sydney, Amsterdam and Cologne as hosts of this quadrennial celebration.

The Gay Games draws participants from all over the world, particularly North America, Western Europe and Australia/New Zealand. Participants will travel from cities with large LGBT populations like Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, as well as mid-sized Midwestern cities within driving distance of Cleveland and Akron. The event will host up to 9,000 participants from around the world, along with an estimated 20,000 additional guests, performers, spectators and volunteers. The number of participants in the Gay Games is comparable to the number of athletes in the Summer Olympics. Cleveland and Akron will host 35 sports and culture events. Sports will be as varied as softball, track and field, soccer and

swimming to rodeo, bowling, volleyball and rowing. Culture competitions include choral and band performances. Cleveland and Akron have world-class venues, facilities, and cultural institutions. In Cleveland, participants will enjoy many thriving downtown locations, including the newly built Convention Center and Cleveland State University facilities, plus locations at Case Western Reserve University, historic landmarks and in other eclectic neighborhoods. In Akron, they will leverage several downtown venues, nearby University of Akron facilities, and the Firestone Country Club. Events will be located as central to public transportation as possible. The Gay Games offer many opportunities to not only the Cleveland/Akron area but the state and nation as well. During the weeklong event, the Games will contribute tens of millions of dollars to the region’s economy. What’s more, this experience of planning and hosting the Games will transform communities through collaborative efforts, evolved thinking about diversity, and education about important issues. They’ll have the chance to showcase their region and the hospitality of the people who consider Cleveland and Akron home, and anticipate that visitors will return to enjoy what the region has to offer. On Saturday, the ninth of August, the Opening Ceremony for the 2014 Gay Games will kick off at Quicken Loans Arena (home of the Cleveland Cavs basketball team) in downtown Cleveland. The Gay Games Opening Ceremony will offer a star-studded line up of entertainment, featuring singer, dancer, and radio host Lance Bass, Broadway actress Andrea McArdle, and the legendary Pointer Sisters. The event will generate buzz, excitement and spirit that will carry throughout the remainder of the Games.

Blackmail, My Love by Katie Gilmartin This historically rich, illustrated noir mystery from first time novelist Katie Gilmartin follows lesbian Josie O’Connor as she searches for her twin brother though the queer hangouts of 1950s San Francisco, including the Black Cat Café, the Beat movement’s North Beach and the Tenderloin. What emerges is a complex and gorgeously told story that centers around a 1951 Supreme Court ruling that homosexuals had a legal right to congregate, resulting in gay bar owners becoming resistant to customary payoffs in exchange for police protection. Blackmail, My Love is strong, lush and rich.

scopes AQUARIUS JAN 21 - FEB 19 For the first two weeks of July, Venus will spotlight your house of love. You also know in your heart that it’s time to make certain changes. Once you do what you know you need to do, your well being will improve. Don’t let loved ones spend your money and take time to invest in something spiritual.

leo July 23 - aug 22 With Jupiter transiting your first house during the last two weeks of July, you’ll feel an increased sense of self worth and confidence. You’ll feel unstoppable, so take advantage of your shining personality. Before that, you may be questioning some core beliefs. Follow your heart, Leo. What a lucky and special year for you!

pisces feb 20 - mar 20 Your energy is coming back in spades, especially towards the end of the month. Children in your life may be encountering some drama; be there for them but remember to take time for yourself. Pisces is the queen of giving too much. It’s all right to take time for yourself. Expect good luck in work and health as Jupiter is transiting these areas.

virgo aug 23 - sept 23 You’re experiencing some very good luck with the ability to maintain a strong sense of peace this month. As you know, Virgos find it hard to stay calm and not stress. This is a good time to take a deep breath and focus on taking care of your emotional well being and dreams. Cultivate a sense of wonder this month.

aries mar 21 - apr 20 You’ve worked very hard over the last several months and now you can finally take a break and relax because Jupiter is transiting your fifth house of love and play. Get romantic with that special person. Spend some time relaxing and having fun. The stars say so!

libra sept 24 - oct 23 You’ve been taking a break either mentally or emotionally, and now it’s time to get back in the swing of things. Set work goals and go after them, especially goals that have to do with leadership abilities. You are great at bringing people together and some of history’s strongest leaders have been Libras. Work with it and do what you think you can’t.

taurus apr 21 - may 21 Careful not to get dragged into other people’s drama. As the saying goes, “Not my circus, not my monkeys.” The more you stay out of other people’s stuff, the better you’ll feel. You and a partner will improve your relationship. Your communication skills improve. Take advantage of that and work with the local community.

scorpio oct 24 - nov 22 There’s been some craziness happening at work and you’ve wanted to get away. Hold off, if you can. Instead, make sure that you’re taking enough time for yourself. Use a weekend for a spa trip and put away the phone and laptop. Midmonth, you may finally say goodbye to something that’s been holding you back and kickstart a new beginning.

gemini may 22 - june 21 You’re the first one to get out there and party, but the stars are gently asking you to be careful about your spending. It looks like you’re spending too much on good times with friends. Look for fun, free things to do.. The zodiac will support you, no worries. This is a great year for luck in business. It just requires you to tighten on spending.

sagittarius nov 23 - dec 21 You might feel a little rocky when it comes to love and money issues, but no worries. By month’s end, you’ll feel better about both. Take time to reconnect with your romantic partner if you have one. If not, take time to visualize what you’re looking for. When in doubt, focus on prayer, meditation, and talking to the universe about your needs. You’ll receive.

cancer June 22 - july 22 You may feel like you’re being pulled in two opposite directions this month, Cancer. Perhaps between two friends, your parents, or two areas of your life. Breathe through the anger. The next year should be very good for money, provided you can stick to a budget and plan ahead.

capricorn dec 22 - jan 20 Good news, Cappy! You know those pesky battles that have cropped up with loved ones or business partners? Those will start to calm down and you’ll both be able to come to a new agreement concerning what the relationship should look like in the future. This is a wonderful time for luck in the areas of financial windfalls and rekindled romance.
