There are people in this world who, for whatever reason, it never occurs to us that they would one day be gone. People who, in some way, create a balance in all the chaos that surrounds us—reminders that there really is good, there really is peace, there really is beauty. For me, Maya Angelou was one of those people. She turned anger into love, adversity into triumph and paved the way for all of us, standing for all that is right until her last breath. My life ,who I am and what I believe have all been deeply influenced and guided by the wisdom of her words. And I have no words to truly express the depth of this loss. All I can do is hope that we, as women, continue her great work and keep her spirit alive in the women of the future. On June 6 at 2pm, OWN will rebroadcast the Maya Angelou episode of Masterclass. If you have not seen it, or even if you have, I urge you to set aside an hour of your life to watch—and more importantly listen to—this amazing woman as she shares the lessons of her life and the gift of her wisdom. It is, among so many other things, a profound experience. See you next month.

in the news Same-Sex Marriage Support Solidifies Above 50% in U.S. Support has been 50% or above in three separate readings in last year According the most recent Gallup poll, Americans’ support for the law recognizing samesex marriages as legally valid has increased yet again, now at 55%. Marriage equality advocates have had a string of legal successes over the past year, most recently this week in Pennsylvania and Oregon where federal judges struck down bans on gay marriage. Two successive Gallup polls in 2012 saw support climb from 53% to 54%, indicating a steady but slight growth in acceptance of gay marriages over the past year after a more rapid increase between 2009 and 2011. In the latest May 8-11 poll, there is further evidence that support for gay marriage has solidified above the majority level. This comes on the heels of gay marriage proponents’ 14th legal victory in a row. When Gallup first asked Americans this question about same-sex marriage in 1996, 68% were opposed to recognizing marriage between two men or two women, with slightly more than a quarter supporting it (27%). Since then, support has steadily grown, reaching 42% by 2004 when Massachusetts became the first state to legalize it -- a milestone that reached its 10th anniversary this month. In 2011, support for gay marriage vaulted over the 50% mark for the first time, and since 2012, support has remained above that level. In the last year, however, support has leveled off a bit. Currently, 17 states and the District of Colum-
bia have legalized same-sex marriage, while several states wait in legal limbo as they appeal judge rulings overturning state bans. Among the most dramatic divisions in opinion on the issue are between age groups. As has been the case in the past, support for marriage equality is higher among younger Americans; the older an American is, the less likely he or she is to support marriage for same-sex couples. Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted May 8-11, 2014, with a random sample of 1,028 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±5 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.

presidential proclamation As progress spreads from State to State, as justice is delivered in the courtroom, and as more of our fellow Americans are treated with dignity and respect -- our Nation becomes not only more accepting, but more equal as well. During Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, we celebrate victories that have affirmed freedom and fairness, and we recommit ourselves to completing the work that remains. Last year, supporters of equality celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act, a ruling which, at long last, gave loving, committed families the respect and legal protections they deserve. In keeping with this decision, my Administration is extending family and spousal benefits -- from immigration benefits to military family benefits -- to legally married same-sex couples... This month, as we mark 45 years since the patrons of the Stonewall Inn defied an unjust policy and awakened a nascent movement, let us honor every brave leader who stood up, sat in, and came out, as well as the allies who supported them along the way.... NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2014 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists... Read full proclamation whitehouse.gov
what she said about... “We live in an uncertain world and we want to believe that what a man is and what a woman is–I know that. And people don’t want to critically interrogate the world around them. Whenever I’m afraid of something or I’m threatened by something, it’s because it brings up some sort of insecurity in me. I think the reality is that most of us are insecure about our gender. They think, ‘Okay, if there’s this trans person over here, then what does that make me?’ We want to just coast along in a belief system that makes us feel secure, because we are a culture, as Brene Brown would say, that is intolerant to vulnerability. And if we are in a position where we have to begin to question this very basic idea of ‘A man has a penis and a woman has a vagina,’ then that’s a lot of vulnerability.” —Orange is the New Black star, Laverne Cox in an interview with Time magazine, out on June 9th. Laverne is the first transgender woman to appear on the cover of Time.

COURT DATE SET: Marriage Equality Lawsuit Hearing has been scheduled for July 2nd in miami On Wednesday, July 2 at 4 PM, the fight for marriage equality in Florida will have its day in court, with a hearing before Judge Sarah Zabel in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court in Miami. News of the court date comes on the heels of back-to-back marriage equality victories in Oregon, Utah and Pennsylvania. Judge Zabel will hear from attorneys who filed a lawsuit in January on behalf of six same-sex couples and Equality Florida Institute. The lawsuit argues that Florida’s laws barring same-sex couples from marriage violate the United States Constitution by denying them the legal protections and equal dignity that having the freedom to marry provides. “...the majority of Floridians stand with us, as there is no reasonable argument for discrimination against our families. Throughout the nation, courts have ruled that these harmful laws are outdated and out of step, and we believe that equality and justice will prevail in Florida, as well,” said Equality Florida Institute Chief Executive Officer Nadine Smith. More than 70 cases are currently pending in state and federal court in more than 30 states and U.S. territories, and judges, appointed by Republicans and Democrats alike, have issued 19 consecutive victories for marriage equality. In addition to Equality Florida Institute, the plaintiffs in the case to be heard on July 2nd include four couples who are raising children and another couple with an adult child and two grandchildren. They are represented by the law firm Carlton Fields Jorden Burt, Elizabeth F. Schwartz, Mary B. Meeks, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR).

Providing necessary tools for LBT women
LBT-inclusive
Healthcare
at your fingertips! Are you out to your primary doctor or have you ever wondered how he or she will react to your sexual orientation? Have you experienced discrimination at your doctor’s office? If so, now there is a website where you can search for LBT inclusive doctors in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Funded by Aqua Foundation for Women, The Pride Center’s Tri-County LBT Women’s Health Initiative developed an online, searchable directory with 300 health care practitioners. The Initiative provides necessary tools for Florida LBT health consumers to access health care without fear and social stigma by accessing culturally competent providers. We recently spoke to Women in Network President Denise Spivak who has been involved with this initiative since day one. How much has the LBT Health Directory grown since its launch in 2013?
We started with a really strong directory of LBT providers and have grown roughly 10% since we launched. We’re always looking to add more culturally competent providers. What is the screening process for those doctors who want to register in the directory and what is it based on?
Doctors and/or any other LBT health and wellness providers can fill out our Provider Survey right on the website (www.lbthealth.org). One big focus for us is the Cultural Competency portion of the survey. If providers cannot demonstrate that they are in some way culturally competent (and that can include that A Patient’s
Bill of Rights and/or non-discrimination policy is publicly available and includes the term “sexual orientation” and the terms “gender identity or expression” or “gender identity,” or that they and/or their staff have completed cultural competency training, or even that their intake forms are LBT inclusive) then we will not include them in the directory.
not the same. If we are asked about contraception and say we’re not using any, it’s a real bonus to have a provider that understands why and doesn’t grill us for another five minutes to understand why. In some cases it’s very basic.
Based on communicationwith doctors in your directory, why do they feel it is important for them to know about their patients’ sexual orientation?
We receive anywhere from 30-75 new visits to the website every week. I think that’s a success story on its own! It means that people know about the directory and are looking for health care. But we have had a number of women tell us that they went to the directory (either because they saw an article, were handed a promotional postcard or were referred by a friend), looked for a provider, and sought care because they finally felt comfortable and confident choosing a doctor. In some cases, those first visits have led to medical conditions being discovered, and in at least one case it was a lifesaving situation. If this directory can improve just one woman’s health or save one woman’s life, then we’ve been successful.
Assuming there are women who are not comfortable with sharing that information, I don’t think it’s a matter of doctor’s needing to know a patient’s sexual orientation. I really think it’s more about a) a doctor/health provider knowing as much as they can about their patient so that they can give her the best treatment possible, b) the patient being in a comfortable, accepting environment, and c) the patient having the opportunity to share as much as they want to share. What special medical needs have you found lesbians or gay women have in comparison to straight or bisexual women?
I’m not a doctor so I won’t say a lot here. There are studies that LBT women do face increased dangers of certain cancers and medical challenges that our straight sisters might not, but at the end of the day, I think LBT women want providers who understand that all women are
Are there any successful stories on how the directory has helped women in our community?
The directory currently includes doctor offices from Miami-Dade up to West Palm Beach. Are there future plans to include out-of-state information?
At this time we don’t have any plans for that. We are happy to help folks from other locations to start their own directory, but we’re focused on South Florida. Visit them at www.lbthealth.org

At a time when we were feeling hopeless about lesbian representation on television, along came ABC Family’s The Fosters, something we can relate to and be proud of, from executive producer Jennifer Lopez and created by Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige. Winner of 2013’s Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Breakout Show and a 2014 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series, The Fosters is a compelling, one-hour drama about a multi-ethnic family of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms. Stef Foster (Teri Polo), a dedicated police officer, and her partner Lena Adams Foster (Sherri Saum), a school vice principal, have built a close-knit, loving family with Stef’s biological son from a previous marriage, Brandon, and their adopted twins Mariana and Jesus. Recently, we had a chance to talk to one of its stars, Sherri Saum— who plays Lena Adams Foster—on what’s it like being part of this successful and groundbreaking show. Season two of The Fosters will begin airing Monday, June 16 at 9pm on ABC Family. We are glad to know Rosie O’Donnell will be back for season two in her role as foster care worker Rita Hendricks for two episodes in August. Did you have concerns at all about taking this role when you first read the script?
My only concern was if ABC Family was going to do this the right way or would it be some cheesy representation, would they be sugar-coating everything because I didn’t want to be a part of, like, fluff, you know? But, they sure are doing it right and my fears went away quickly. So, it’s been great - no problem whatsoever. I feel like as The Fosters rolls into its next season, people are still talking about it as much, if not more, as they were when it first came out. What do you think is key to staying so popular and relevant?
I give all the credit to the writers. Even though I love the cast so much, the writers are just so good. Every time I get a script, I think, “How can they top last week?” and yet they do. I don’t even know why this surprises me! (laughs) But I guess we’ve all seen it before, how some shows start off really good and then just peter out. But our writing is so strong - the writers and the producers are just so passionate and invested. Some stuff comes from their own lives and it’s their stories, so I think we’re really lucky.

“The more it happens, the less it’ll be ground breaking every time. It’ll be the norm. It’s the direction television is moving into and it’s about time.” How were the GLAAD awards? They seemed particularly special this year.
It was really great. It was like validation. We were being honored by the very people we represent and represent in an accurate light. So, we felt like we’re doing our jobs and we’re doing them well. It was a huge honor to be among the company there. It was fantastic, really. Do you think there is a trend happening, that television is recognizing the importance of having LGBT characters out there and visible?
I do. It seems like every day you hear about shows introducing a gay character or a couple or having a gay wedding, and it’s so ground breaking. It’s great because one day, it won’t have to always be ground breaking, you know? The more it happens, the less it’ll be ground breaking every time. It’ll be the norm. It’s the direction television is moving into and it’s about time. I recently had a conversation with someone and they said they think if gay and lesbian subject matter is written in a digestible way, viewers have an easier time swallowing it. Would you agree?
I guess, to some degree. I know there were some shows in the past that just delved right into the sexuality part. They concentrated on that mainly. Every storyline was about hooking up, who was with who, and the club scenes. I guess that can be polarizing in a sense because not everyone can relate to that, not everyone lives in West Hollywood or has that particular life style. It’s just one view of it and they don’t have anything to hold onto from that. They don’t have kids, a family structure, or the same struggles, so we’re showing a different side and maybe that is a little more digestible and relatable. The Fosters has some phenomenal writers, like creator and writer Peter Paige (Queer As Folk). That must be fantastic for you to work with someone who’s been down that road before with a series about gay people.
It does. It adds so much to it. I mean, we could not have better leaders. Peter is so witty and smart and so funny and so sensitive. I never cease
to be amazed by what he brings to the table—what all the writers bring to the table, really. I feel like we’re really reaping the benefits of what they’ve all been through or experienced, good and bad, at some point, because it does come through in their writing. You work with a really talented cast. Teri Polo and the children are so good. What’s the atmosphere like on the set?
Oh God, it’s going to sound so cliché, but I can’t help it. I have to go there. It is a family feel. I feel so lucky because sometimes you take a job and it’s just like, “Oh, here we go again, with this one….” or whatever, but I have to say, I love every single person. From craft service to the producers and executive producers, we have so much fun every day. We pick on each other, we joke around and everyone laughs til their ribs feel like they’ve cracked. It’s so much fun all the time. It is like being with family. I think it shows, especially as the show gets on because the characters are developing so well.
Oh, thank you. That’s so nice to hear! How was it to work with Rosie O’ Donnell?
Rosie is so great. She’s so deadpan. She is so real. What you see is what you get. She is such a phenomenal comedic talent, but aside from that she’s also a great dramatic actress, too. She was just so wonderful with us. She came in and did her job. She didn’t take over anything or overpower anything. She fit right in the pocket perfectly. She is sensitive and smart. It was a great experience to work with her. The fans can’t get enough of her, so I really hope we get to see more of her. We lesbians are such a big, embracing group! Do you hear from a lot of lesbian moms?
I do, I think because of social media. I’m kind of shy and wasn’t into it right away and now I’ve jumped in. I’m so glad I did because it’s a great way to find out the impact we’re having. I do hear from moms, teens and fans and I love it. I’m so happy to hear from them. It’s wonderful to get such positive feedback and be able to interact. It makes me feel great to know we’re doing a good job. I think we’re all in agreement with that!

photos by boi-photography.com / view more at www.shemag.com i live in: Savannah, Georgia Relationship status: Single. my greatest accomplishment: Running two small businesses
(the Dirty Dolls Revue and Mary Elizabeth Johnson Fine Art) before the age of 30 while raising my beautiful feline-daughter. My occupation: Director of Dirty Dolls Burlesque Revue & Fine Artist (representation painting) Dream Girl: Obviously, she’s needs to have “the usual”: honesty, loyalty and compassion. Being goofy, ambitious, optimistic, energetic, self-aware, supportive, kinky and understanding of this unusual showgirl-lifestyle is imperative. All that in a cat-loving, yoga enthusiast with nice curves would be absolute perfection. my pets: My cat, Pittorina (Italian for “little painter”) Dream Job: What I do now. Being a performer/entertainer/artist/ creativity-fiend, but on a larger and farther reaching scale. My mother thinks I: “am uniquely beautiful, inside and out.” sensitive body parts: Neck and back of my thighs Turn-ons: Humor, shyness, adrenaline, corrupting “good-girls”, long messy hair, hot showers and curves. Turn-offs: Egotism, narrow-mindedness, excessive body hair. My Best Quality: Creativity and determination. the last book i read: Probably something about Representational Painting Techniques or Baroque Art. secret fetish: Ivy Les Vixen summed it up best by saying: “I think if we actually knew the things you do, we’d all go to hell”. I have a weakness for: Shy girls! If my life were made into a movie, my part will be played by: I’ve been told I look like Lenny Kravits and Predator. Is
either one open to the idea of doing Drag? my favorite quote: “If we were all cast of the same mold, there
would be no such thing as beauty.” Favorite flower: Orchids for their beauty. Sunflowers because of my dad. When I was a kid, I was trying to grow sunflowers in the back yard. After weeks of nothing growing, I finally came home to find a giant sunflower standing in the planter. I was so excited! Evidently, my dad had put a fake one in there when I wasn’t looking. the cartoon character i am most like: I’ve been compared to Glenn Quagmire on numerous occasions. The weirdest thing i ever ate: My own cooking is pretty questionable (at best). If you could change your name, what would you pick? What, “Mary Elizabeth” isn’t an ideal stage-name?! It took
me years to embrace having a “good biblical name”. It’s delightfully unsuitable and that’s why I wouldn’t change it. My coming out was: Not that exciting. Growing up, I had always had gay friends and went to Pride Events whenever I was able. I guess I came-out in college and I just let my family put it together on their own. My family is incredible. French Fries, French Vanilla, French Toast or French Manicure?: French Maids French Kissing, si’il vous plait. i think the lgbt community needs: More unity and less
self-judgment. In the past, the LGBT community gave bisexuals such a hard time. Now we’re extremely critical of trans individuals. It doesn’t make sense that people in OUR community exhibit the same behaviors that we’ve fought against from anti-gay groups.

Lesbian Marriage: A Sex Survival Kit by Kim Chernin and Renate Stendhal Smart, honest, amusing and with plenty of lighthearted drawings, Lesbian Marriage is one of the first books I’ve seen that deals primarily with lesbians who have officially tied the knot. Tired of preachy, overly long relationship manuals that aren’t any fun to read? Then pick up a copy of Lesbian Marriage. Parts of it are designed like a comic book, reminding me of Dykes to Watch Out for: The Marriage Edition.
Coffee Breaks by Eva Reddy This delicious and well-written collection of lesbian erotica is as yummy as a well-blended latte. Nominated for an Independent Publisher Award, Coffee Breaks is made up of loosely connected stories, most of which follow the flirtation between Matilda and dashing sex worker Chase. But that’s not all—there are plenty of plot twists in this unique, sexy book. Great for long days on the beach, if you’re brave enough to read this in public.
The Lost Women of Lost Lake by Ellen Hart Beloved mystery author Ellen Hart is back with this Bywater Books reprint of the 19th Jane Lawless Mystery. Ellen Hart’s savvy and resourceful PI is put to the test as she discovers that helping partners Jill and Tessa with their women’s resort on Lost Lake is anything but simple. An old mystery involving the 1960s death of a cop comes back to haunt the resort’s owners and Jane Lawless finds herself caught in the middle. Addictive and compulsively readable, The Lost Women of Lost Lake is a perfect summer mystery.

scopes AQUARIUS JAN 21 - FEB 19 You have permission from the Universe to go out and play while you combine business with pleasure. Be ready, willing and able to jump on the bandwagon if you’re invited to take the ride. The final destination is your creative imagination. Just picture it and make it so. Use your gift of gab to convince, not bully, everyone else to follow where you lead. Just make sure it’s in everyone’s best interest for a win-win.
leo July 23 - aug 22 You’ll be more social, taking every opportunity to enjoy old friends and make new ones. Share your ideas. Don’t be shy about asking for help in achieving your goals. Make sure you put your best foot forward and look your best at all times. Your past, romantic or otherwise, might tap you on the shoulder at any time. Past issues of all kinds will also resurface.
pisces feb 20 - mar 20 Your focus is on problem-solving around current fiscal dilemmas, yet confusing energies are fogging your thoughts. The Retrograde is responsible for more than miscommunication. It’s also responsible for past lovers popping up. Whether that’s good or bad remains to be seen. The Universe is creating circumstances to see if you have learned from past mistakes. There will be a test. Self-awareness is key to self-improvement.
virgo aug 23 - sept 23 Expect confusion, delays and snafus around even the best laid plans. You’ll have to work even harder than usual to keep yourself and your plans in balance. Don’t unsettle your financial goals by doing or saying risky, impulsive things. Be patient. If it doesn’t flow, let it go until the planetary energy clears.
aries mar 21 - apr 20 You’re more than ready to get things done. However, the Retrograding energies are putting up all sorts of blocks. Be careful when communicating your frustration to all concerned. Don’t open yourself up to problems with the significant others in your life. Spend time exploring your neighborhood, consider your options to socialize and enjoy time with friends and family. Home improvement projects will also benefit.
libra sept 24 - oct 23 You’re excited about your plans for the future, including travel to both familiar and new destinations. Be a flexible flyer and ride the air currents to get where you want to go. Your energy is high and you’re anxious to get going. Keep your sense of humor and avoid getting mad over stuff you can’t change. Remember getting there is half the fun, so enjoy the journey, even with the Retrogrades messing up schedules.
taurus apr 21 - may 21 Your focus is on improving your finances. Take every opportunity at the beginning of the month to establish a strong bond with the significant others in your life, before the Retrogrades start playing with how we communicate. Find a creative outlet for angry reactions to snafus and delays and exercise your frustration into health benefits. Be creative as you make your realistic budget for the immediate future.
scorpio oct 24 - nov 22 All of your focus and energy must be laser beamed on how to improve your current issues and restore your power. You want to explore new ways to achieve your goals and find balance in your life. Self-exploration will be more beneficial if you share your thoughts with the significant others in your life. Use this time to finish whatever you’ve started and break any old habits. Don’t expect others to do the work for you.
gemini may 22 - june 21 The Universe is forcing you to make some adjustments in how you react to challenges. Every aspect of your life will benefit from an honest inventory of your past. Once a problem has been identified, use your creativity to figure a way to fix it, change it, or get rid of it. Stay optimistic about your future, even as circumstances force you to rethink your goals. Seek expert guidance as you make important changes.
sagittarius nov 23 - dec 21 Relationships of all kinds are highlighted as the planets force positive action. Use your charm to do your own PR and convince others that your way is the best way. Look for ways to improve your daily routine. Make time to exercise your body and mind. Get yourself out of the rut. Be creative in planning adventures, even if it’s just around town. Explore the possibilities, opportunities and options.
cancer June 22 - july 22 You are on a journey of self-discovery that will bring beneficial insights as to what works in your life. Disappointed expectations and frustrated ambitions prompt you to rethink your strategies for reaching your goals. Release old feelings and generally take your personal inventory with self-improvement in mind. The Universe is empowering you to make the necessary adjustments in order to truly achieve your hopes and dreams.
capricorn dec 22 - jan 20 You will have to make an extra effort to schedule down time for yourself to avoid getting sick. Carefully consider what you really have to do and then don’t bite off more than you can actually chew. This is the best time to stop and review your future plans. Don’t make any firm commitments or impulsive decisions that would undermine your security. Keep your focus on your goals. Be open to revising strategies.
