Last week, a piece of information fell in my lap and I wasn’t sure what to do with it. Since I am not yet into the Twitter craze, I chose to do the next best thing—I went to Facebook. I opened the status window and typed the words, “Now what do I do with this bit of information?” A few minutes later, I checked and one of my long distance friends had responded with, “Use it for good—not evil.” Talk about a kick in the gut. This was about the greatest answer I could have received. It made me take a huge step backwards and ask myself what really was the best course of action. While my heart and my head were both telling me that I should act on what I had learned, her post made me realize that there are times when one person’s good can be another person’s evil. At face value, what I saw was an opportunity, one that I had waited for 18 years to come my way. About a year ago, I had finally resigned myself to accepting it was just never going to happen and I should just let it go. You can only imagine the shock I felt when it just suddenly fell into my lap. Every instinct I had was to jump and grab it before it disappeared forever. But that post…it made me really stop and think. I do my very best to live my life by a certain set of rules. The first is, “Do no harm.” Now, you see, I was going into this thinking it was the universe giving me the chance to do something wonderful for myself. I hadn’t stopped to think about whether or not it might cause harm to anyone else. And, I hadn’t stopped to think about whether acting on this information might ultimately cause me more harm, as well. Maybe it was just the universe giving me the chance to prove to myself that I could just let it go, with the knowledge that I didn’t let go simply because I had no choice. I’m not going to give you details, because I want you to fill in the blanks with your own scenario. We all have situations like this occur, when we see an opportunity and just jump, without stopping to check for danger, to ourselves or others. We forget to ask ourselves if our good may, in fact, be someone else’s evil. For today, I made the choice to not jump. Instead, I took one, very cautious, step forward. With the help of a close friend, I figured out the best way to utilize the opportunity to do what I needed to do for myself, without harming others in my wake. I proved to myself that I really am a better person than I was 18 years ago. And now, even I wind up a little hurt by the outcome, I will know I did it the right way and I really can let it go. See you next month.

Heaven is the debut album from Britain’s X Factor finalist with the smoky Neo-Soul voice, Rebecca Ferguson. She puts her own stamp on the music by co-writing every track, including the lead single ‘Nothing’s Real But Love.’ Most X Factor finalists load their debut albums with covers and cliché ballads; Ferguson, an established songwriter, proves there are other options.

The second season of Necessary Roughness, starring Callie Thorn premieres on USA Network at 10pm on June 6. Highprofile clients from athletes to entertainers to politicians are clamoring for Dr. Dani’s unique brand of therapy during their moments of crisis. Although her career is reenergized, Dani soon discovers that balancing her workload and the demands of single motherhood won’t be easy.

The story of Rock of Ages is told through the heart-pounding soundtrack filled with the hits of Def Leppard, Journey, Poison, Twisted Sister, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Joan Jett, and more. All songs are performed by the movie musical’s cast including Tom Cruise, Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Julianne Hough.

Regina Spektor has been hailed as a truly special talent. What We Saw From The Cheap Seats was recorded summer of 2011 in Los Angeles. She wrote each of the 11 tracks.. Most of the songs were recorded live with Spektor on piano and vocals, and additional instrumentation was added to these original takes. Each song takes you on a journey that only Regina is capable of providing.

Coming back for its second season on July 2 at 11pm is Showtime’s Web Therapy. Lisa Kudrow’s online therapist Fiona Wallice just makes us feel so...sane. In Season Two’s 10 episodes, we’ll see patients played by Meryl Streep, Conan O’Brien, Rosie O’Donnell, Molly Shannon, Minnie Driver and Selma Blair, among others.

Run, don’t walk! In theaters right now is the sci-fi/action/horror flick, Prometheus, starring Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron. A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

not to be missed: The comedy/drama, Peace, Love & Misunderstanding, starring Jane Fonda, Catherine Keener, Elizabeth Olsen and Natt Wolff. An uptight NYC lawyer takes her two teenagers to her hippie mother’s farmhouse upstate for a family vacation. Opens June 8.

The honorees were selected for their long-term commitment to fostering diversity, as well as for their efforts in contributing to the overall well-being and quality of life in South Florida. “As the voice of the LGBT business community, the Chamber is especially proud to have such an exemplary group to recognize this year,” said Steve Adkins, MDGLCC president. “From a global LGBT trailblazer to hometown heroes, this year’s gala honorees are as diverse as the LGBT community itself. THE ORANGE GALA is particularly significant this year in light of the Chamber’s achievements in growth and influence as well as the success of the LGBT Visitor Center in Miami Beach.” For the past several years, the MDGLCC Gala Committee has selected a different color of the rainbow flag for the Gala’s theme and has encouraged attendees to wear a splash of that color to the event. The theme for this year’s event is THE ORANGE GALA featuring a color which represents optimism, warmth, happiness, adventure and risk-taking. This annual event, MDGLCC’s principal fundraising effort of the year, helps sustain operations and the ever-increasing demand to expand programming. The campaign to re-elect President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden rolled out a new campaign effort late May, targeting LGBTQ voters. “The President’s campaign has a long history of working with the LGBT community to move America forward,” according to a statement released by the campaign. “The President believes that America prospers when we’re all in it together.” “We will be making sure LGBT voices are heard at the ballot box in November,” said Jamie Citron, the Obama for America LGBT national vote director. “We will run robust LGBT vote programming in order to turn out LGBT voters in November.” And in a new campaign video, “Glee” star Jane Lynch narrates this documentary about LGBT rights in America, featuring a candid interview with Obama, who speaks about the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, why he supports marriage equality, and what’s at stake for the LGBT community in this election. Obama Pride: LGBT Americans for Obama is launching with trainings, phone banks and house parties in a number of states including Pennsylvania, Colorado, Nevada and Michigan. Grassroots LGBT volunteers will organize neighborhood by neighborhood and block by block, talking to their friends, family and coworkers. Citron also announced that the campaign had launched an LGBT-specific campaign web portal, BaracKoBama. com/lgBt.

NAACP Evolution on Marriage Equality Began Decades Ago

“The exhilaration and pride I felt, as a black lesbian in my civil rights organization, took me back nearly 20 years when the NAACP stepped out on a skinnier limb at a pivotal moment to stand up for LGBT equality.” This isn’t the first time the NAACP has stepped out on principle for an issue that affects the lives of LGBT people. Nor is it the first time they will experience a predictable, orchestrated backlash. Those of us celebrating their decision to support marriage equality must now also step up on the organization’s behalf. Mid May, the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization took the logical yet heroic step of publicly supporting marriage rights for gay couples. In doing so, the NAACP has joined President Obama, and Hispanic civil rights leaders in dramatically accelerating the movement for marriage equality and hastening the day when it becomes the law of the land. The exhilaration and pride I felt, as a black lesbian in my civil rights organization, took me back nearly 20 years when the NAACP stepped out on a skinnier limb at a pivotal moment to stand up for LGBT equality. In 1993 as a co-chair for the March on Washington, I was called on to meet with NAACP Board Chair William Gibson about the possibility of their national board endorsing the march. I flew to South Carolina and met with him for several hours in the lobby of a hotel. He told me about his work registering voters and his desire to re-energize young people

in the NAACP work. He asked me questions about homophobia at the Air Force Academy when he learned I had been a cadet. I told him about classmates of mine who had been kicked out of school in their final year because they were gay. I explained my own decision to depart rather than risk violating the honor code or a dishonorable discharge. Gibson said he believed that leaders within their organization could get the endorsement from the board, but that there would be significant resistance in some quarters. He agreed to step out personally first to signal the direction he wanted the board to take. We sent out a press release praising Gibson’s personal stand on the military ban and the march. Here’s a brief clip of Gibson’s speech: “If they had put our civil rights to a vote today, I’m not convinced the measure would pass,” Gibson said. “We face the same opposition and we must coalesce to oppose these common foes.” The backlash that Chairman Gibson predicted came fast and furious in some areas of the country. We heard that conservative churches urged parishioners to turn in their membership cards. Several large funders were threatening to cut them off

March on Washington, 1993.

and other dissenters were planning to depose the leadership. Days before the march I was told by a friend within the NAACP to expect a phone call that would likely announce that they would keep the endorsement in effect but no speakers would be sent. When the call came from NAACP Executive Director Ben Chavez was braced for the worst. He said he knew we were hearing the reports and reading articles about internal protests and external pressure. He wanted to call personally to let us know that he, the board chair and the NAACP national president -elected by the chapters- would all be on hand. “We are with you.” he said. It was a phrase he made the center point of his comments from the stage. Once again the NAACP has shown leadership as a civil rights standard-bearer. They no doubt are experiencing some pushback but almost 20 years later they are also hearing support from a growing base of support. Those of us beaming with pride, celebrating this bold stand timed for maximum impact must do more than applaud from the sidelines. Today is a good day to renew your NAACP membership. The nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization is fighting for all of us. All of us need to fight for it. [ www.naacp. org ]

Rizzoli and Isles fans were more than ready for the 3rd season opener on the TNT network June 5th at 9PM. Oh, yes, we were all set for those lingering glances, that bond, and the connection that’s created such a huge loyal, lesbian following! We recently spoke to Sasha Alexander, just after her children’s school carnival (FYI: Sasha is married to Eduardo Ponti, Sophia Loren’s son and has two children.) in Los Angeles, and just like the millions of Rizzoli and Isles fans, we’re hooked! You worked on crime dramas, NCIS and CSI, in the past. What drew you to this series?

The script was really strong. I loved the mystery part of it and the strong female characters. Maura Isles was particularly unique to me, the offbeat quirkiness; I liked the relationship with Jane. I was somewhat familiar with the Tess Gerritsen books, but after I got the role, I dove into them and became obsessed with the characters and the crimes. They’re just great. I don’t know. I guess I have a knack for picking them! I gotta say, when you read a bunch of pilots, you ask yourself “Is this a show I’d watch every week and why?” I just had a feeling about this one. Do you think “two strong female characters” is a tried and true formula for success in female-lead based series or do more elements need to be present?

Oh, no. No, it’s not tried and true—no one ever does it well. I haven’t seen too many shows that have been successful with two female leads. The truth is first of all the characters have to be really well written and believable. You have to cast the right people who viewers will believe as friends, or a team- and that’s hard to do with women. The thing I like about our show is that it didn’t start out with the girls as best friends or sisters or anything that the audience had to catch up or trust with regards to their relationship. We didn’t have to sell the audience on their history; we’re creating that. The audience joined in at the same place in their relationship that the characters were organically in. I think that’s helped a lot. I mean, they’re co-workers. The audience and the characters are learning a lot about each other as the series progresses and their friendship grows. So, I think that helped the process. They’re slowly getting to be better friends

as they go through deeper experiences, not just personal, but with work, too. The bond between the characters seems to have created a huge lesbian fan following that’s growing each season. Does that ever get discussed by the network or the writers?

They do now. I mean, they didn’t go into the show that way at all. In the books, these two women are friendly, but they’re not close. They were written as two separate entities— you’re following the detective and you’re following the medical examiner. I think for the series, our creator brought the girls together, and when she saw that we had this wonderful chemistry together, I think [the writers] started to build on that, adding some humor and human moments along with the crimes, so all those elements came together. But, I think the first season—no, nobody really expected that or noticed but it just sort of happened, and they absolutely took notice. There was a lot of press about it. I remember The LA Times did this huge article about it, like “More Than Friends...?” People were just so curious to know if these characters were really in some sort of a relationship. It was interesting for me because they’re not lesbians in the book, they’re not in a [same-sex] relationship—so I don’t think they’d go there with the TV show. However, it was interesting to kind of study in terms of not just what people take from it subjectively, but that female relationships when they are close, for whatever reason, seem to excite not just women, but men as well. I think it’s the relationship/friendship the two characters share that really appeals to us girls, (and the secret hopes they’ll get together), really!

I remember the first episode when we were in bed together, I thought “You know, look, as girls, we start having sleep overs when we’re really young, so whether the relationship turns sexual or not later on, girls are close. This is how they speak to each other and how they interact with each other.” So, I find it very realistic. Angie and I don’t shy away from playing things in an organic, natural way, whether that’s hugging or a touch, a look. Whatever it is, we’re both very comfortable with that and we don’t play that for the audience, this is how we really feel and feel it’s right for the characters. But it is always fun to see how people will turn that into something more, and that’s the fun of entertainment, in general, which is that you can make what you want out of it. I mean,

let it be fun for you. I’m proud of the fact that our show represents two strong women, who are very different, in a positive light. I mean, look, I was raised by a single Mom, and female relationships are very important to me.

To be honest, I work Monday through Friday, 12 hours a day, 6 months a year in TV. With the success of the show, they’ve got us doing 15 episodes a season—that’s brutal. Whereas in a movie, you can work for three months, different hours, but be done—but then there’s location shoots—so you may be completely away for 3 months. But with a TV show, I’m in LA, and I’m based here, so it’s no travel, really, but its long hours. I mean sometimes it’s 15-16 hours a day. I’m at work by 5:30am and sometimes not home until God knows when. Really, it’s a rough schedule for Angie and I. We both have kids. Are either of you surprised at the instant success of the series?

you’ve got over 76,000 followers in twitter and you frequently interact with them. How important do you think that’s become for actors now?

I started doing it for the show. Initially, I was on the fence about it because I’m not really the type of person who thinks about telling the world what I’m doing moment to moment! (laughs) So, I found it a bit silly. I guess I don’t really have that voyeuristic gene that some people have who want to know those things about someone. But then I started to realize how it gives a certain accessibility to our fans, you know, in terms of being able to keep up with stuff, being able to dialogue about the show and how they feel about it. We have a huge female following and really, it’s like they’ve all become friends. For some reason, these characters Angie and I play have reminded them of something or someone that they can relate to—whether it’s their best friend, a sister, or a lover—they feel close enough to us, to write to us, tweet to us, or about [the show]. In a couple weeks I’m using Twitter to raise money for charity in Ethiopia and try and raise awareness and hopefully $80,000—so I’m going to be reaching out to my fans and letting them know that instead of gifts for my birthday, they can send a donation. So, yeah, it’s good and can be used in a number of positive ways. (Follow her: @ SashaAlexander1 ) You’ve been in some blockbuster films, like Mission Impossible III, He’s Just Not That Into You, and Yes Man. How big of a change is steady TV work from a part in a film for a working mom and wife?

It’s always a surprise. TV is such a difficult medium and highly competitive, so you do the best you can, and hope for the best. We did hit it right out of the gate, and we’re very grateful for that. And I think this year, season three, the writing is much stronger and I feel like the overall depth of the characters are really getting explored now. Is there anything that you want to happen with your character, Maura, as an actor?

I get to play a lot of different colors as it is. There’s drama, there’s comedy and especially this coming season, there’s a lot of comedy, yes, but there’s a lot of tears. So I’m lucky. Our writers really do take us all over emotionally. It changes a lot, it’s never predictable, and I love that! What can we expect in season three?

I can tell you that season three starts just a few minutes after the season two finale ended, so you’re still right there in the moment, and Maura is still reeling from the turn of events, and the intensity of it all. I can tell you that, obviously, the girls aren’t in the best place in the series opener, but it’s that’s important. The conflict is important to deepen their relationship; it’s going to make them stronger and definitely much tighter, moving forward. And, Maura gets to find her biological mother played by Sharon Lawrence. That’s an intense storyline. You know Jane & Maura get back on track after that opening episode, and they come back together in a really organic and interesting way. It’s all really cool stuff and I’m so thrilled with it. You’re going to love it. I’m so glad we got to do this (interview)! rizzoli & isles airs on tnt every tuesday at 9pm. Www.tntdrama.com

When you think Olivia, you might think “lesbian cruise”, and it’s true that their two 40th anniversary cruises will each carry over 2,100 lesbians for a week of fun-in-the sun. But if your sea legs are in short supply, or cruises don’t float your boat, you can still celebrate 40 years of Olivia at their Punta Cana Music and Comedy Festival, which will be held May 11-18, 2013 at the beautiful all-inclusive Club Med resort in the Dominican Republic. As always, Olivia has bought out the whole resort, and all 1,000 women at the resort that week will be Olivia guests. And you know what that means: fun and freedom! “There’s really nothing like being surrounded by a thousand women like you—women laughing, connecting, and enjoying the freedom of an Olivia vacation,” remarked Judy Dlugacz, President and Founder of Olivia. In order to celebrate this milestone anniversary in style, Olivia is putting together a week-long line-up of off-the-hook activities and entertainment. Think multiple stages, daytime and evening shows, music, comedy, film, dance, spoken word, and workshops. You can look forward to top DJs spinning at nightly parties, and dozens of activities including ones specifically for solos—like mixers, excursions, dance lessons and special dinner seating. “This will be our biggest resort celebration to date and we’re looking forward to an amazing week of festival-style programming, where there will truly be something for everyone,” said Tisha Floratos, Olivia’s Vice President of Travel. Club Med Punta Cana has long been a favorite of Olivia travelers.

Warm blue seas, a white sandy beach, coconut palms, three restaurants featuring cuisines from around the world, personalized pool and beach bar service, and an expansive centrally-located swimming pool make this resort a little piece of paradise. “Our guests love this resort; it’s all-inclusive, which is great, since that means the accommodations, food, drinks—even alcohol, specialty coffees, and sodas—most of the activities and all of our amazing Olivia entertainment is included. We even pick our guests up at the airport and bring them to the resort,” said Floratos. “Each time we go to Punta Cana, everyone has the same question: ‘When can we come back?’”

Olivia resort vacations have a relaxed vibe, but there’s always plenty to do if you so desire. You can spend your day enjoying the beach or hanging out with friends by the swimming pool. And sporty girls, you’ll never want to leave because the offerings include archery, beach volleyball, fitness classes, water aerobics, flying trapeze, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, snorkeling, tennis, soccer, basketball and even ping pong. Want to golf at an oceanfront course? They’ve got that too. Just sign up for the optional excursion. It’s readily apparent that Olivia is excited to celebrate its anniversary in this gorgeous setting, and the festival-style programming is a nod to Olivia’s beginnings as a women’s record company and concert producer. As a record company, Olivia sold over a million albums and as a travel company, Olivia has taken over 130,000 women on more than 180 trips around the world. That is certainly a legacy worth celebrating! Another Olivia tradition that will continue at the Punta Cana Music & Comedy festival is the Olivia Gives program. Olivia regularly partners with local organizations to give back wherever they go. From boxes of school supplies, to toiletries and even birding equipment, Olivia and its guests make a point to make a difference wherever their travels may take them. “Our guests are wonderful; they love to contribute to the communities we visit, and there’s a rich history of Olivia giving back that we are very proud of,” said Dlugacz. “We are lucky indeed to have so many caring women in our Olivia family and we can’t wait to celebrate with them in Punta Cana.” For information on talent for Music and Comedy Festival, please call 800-631-6277 or visit www.olivia.com.

When I first moved to England, I was a little nervous about what I’d find on the “telly” here. I just kept thinking, “It’s going to be all about Dr. Who and that silly Faulty Towers stuff!” Much to my surprise, my wife introduced me to a show called Lip Service and my faith was quickly restored. After experiencing ongoing depression when the Showtime network ended The L Word, a syndrome I call L -Words-Cannot-Describe, I thought there would never again be another lesbian TV series that would work its way into my heart …and pants. Lo and behold, along came Lip Service on BBC3, the more adventurous of the BBC channels. Set in Glasgow, Scotland, the series (now in its second season) focuses on the lives of Frankie, Cat, Tess, Sam, and more recently, Sadie and Lexy—lesbian friends and lovers in their late 20s and early 30s who struggle

with relationships, sex, love, family and work. Smart, sexy, well-written and perfectly cast, the show has instant appeal and the storylines are ones you’ll be drawn to. Whether it’s the smoking hot photographer and sexually non-committal Frankie (Ruta Gedmintas), the uptight and conflicted architect Cat (Laura Fraser) and her girlfriend- the solid, stable police detective Sam (Heather Peace), or fun, flighty actress, Tess (Fiona Button), there is always someone doing something (or someone!) that you’ll find you can relate to, plus a little intrigue as a bonus. I do feel the need to warn you though, you won’t find a palm tree, an outdoor patio café, sunny skies, a skinny non-fat latte, a brand new SUV or scenes from “The Dinah” on this show. It’s a much grittier location, which adds to the mood most of the time. But I do prom-

ise, the girls are hot, the sex is hot, and the storylines will keep you wanting more. A word to the wise—a season for a series here in England is six episodes long. Six. Count ‘em. That’s all. So, soak it up! When I first started watching the series, I wished I had my own dialect coach, so I’ll do you a favor and get you up to speed with a few key words you’ll need to translate in your head when viewing Lip Service. Oh, who am I kidding? All you need to know is that “snog” means a good make-out session and “shag” is full on naked, lusty sex. Are we good? I had goose bumps and the pleasure of talking to series creator and writer Harriet Braun and a couple of the girls from the cast: Heather Peace—the only openly gay member of the cast—(Det. Sam) and Anna Skellern (Lexy).

>>HARRIET BRAUN | “Lip Service” series creator & writer What made you create “Lip Service” let alone think the BBC would give it a home?

I wanted to do a lesbian drama that wasn’t ‘issue-led’ or about coming out. I wanted to show lesbians in their life. To show more than their sexuality, you know? So, that’s not the main focus. People aren’t necessarily gay when they’re grocery shopping! So, I wanted to show all aspects of their lives. Derek Wax of the BBC actually suggested to me, after reading some of my work that had gay characters in it,” What about doing a lesbian drama?” The BBC was really interested in that, so much so, that from the time of the initial treatment stage to the point that it was greenlighted was only 15 months, which is unheard of usually. That’s a very short time for all that to happen. I think the BBC and BBC Scotland were hungry for it. The time was right for that sort of content. They sensed that so we had a lot of support. Do you base any of the characters on real-life people you know?

I think any writer is lying if they say none of their characters are drawn from people they know. But, your characters are also filtered through yourself, so there tends to be a little bit of you in the characters too. The characters are bits of people of you know and bits of yourself all mulched up. If you’re too invested in making a character based on someone you know, then when you’re casting, you realize that you could be limiting yourself because an actor can bring so much more to the character than what you’ve initially created. Are you surprised at how the series is being received? Is there any discussion about Lip Service possibly being aired on BBCAmerica?

That’s all decided by the international departments and foreign sales, but I do think Lip Service will be available on Netflix for America soon, and the DVD box set is available on Amazon.co.uk, so that’s great for the fans from all over. We’ve always done really well abroad in Latin America and Brazil, so I’m glad that it’s catching on in the United States. I’m thrilled they like it. The storylines are so universal – love, friendships, relationships, work, family plus that little bit of mystery & intrigue. Are you finding that straight people are becoming big fans, as well as the already huge lesbian following?

I really like writing the emotional extremes, you know—the comedy/tragedy thing. It’s a terrible thing for me as a writer. When I’m going through some dreadful emotional period, I’ll tend to think, a.) “hmm…good material!” and b.) “could be quite funny, actually” (laughs). Some people don’t really get that sort of irreverence. I actually think that’s kind of a British thing to find the humor in those situations. I do think straight people are watching the show more now, yes, which is lovely, but for me, it was absolutely imperative that the lesbians liked it and followed it. I knew that if it chimed with them, and was authentic, the straight people would fall into it. It’s just been announced that the first ever Lip Service fan event is happening this July in Glasgow and you’ll be attending (as well as Fiona Button, Heather Peace & Anna Skellern). What are you expecting that’ll be like?

Well, I don’t know what to expect, but I’m sure it’ll be a blast. It should be really interesting. It’s a first for me. I’ve never experienced anything like this, so I’m not sure what to expect. But I think I’ll probably be allowed to stalk around, undisturbed. Most people will be all

about the actors that are there and rightly so. The Q&A should be great fun, though. So, yes, I’m excited about going. I’m thrilled at the response and the fans have been wonderful.

>>HEATHER PEACE | “Lip Service” series star, (Det. Sam) and musician – Her album FairyTales was released May 21st and her new single “Better Than You” is out now on iTunes. Heather is touring the U.K. this summer. Check www.heatherpeace.com I’ve read that you originally auditioned for the role of Frankie, but felt more comfortable with the character and much smaller part (at the time) of Det. Sam Murray. Is that true?

Yeah, it’s true. I just knew I wasn’t right for the character of Frankie. I mean, I did all the work, I went in and did the audition, but I remember thinking that I just couldn’t find anything within myself to make this character likeable. I couldn’t see anything redeeming about Frankie. I found her to be trash, kind of. I think Ruta, who plays Frankie, managed to really find things to make Frankie a character you want to watch and who you do like. She found those qualities in the character. But for whatever reason, I just couldn’t. So, I remember saying after reading the Frankie part at the audition, “I could play that Sam part standing on my head!” and they kind of went, “Well, okay, go ahead. Show us.” Then I thought, “I better nail this because that was pretty cocky of me!” Sam is on an emotional roller coaster in season two. How was it playing such extremes?

It was a tough experience, actually. I’m an actor that bounces off other actors and I find the emotion in the dialogue. Then there I was in all these scenes, by myself, without dialogue, as we see Sam going through so much

SHE - 26 - 06/12

shep24_28_LipService.indd 3

6/1/2012 1:28:38 AM

turmoil. So, in that sense, it was quite hard. I mean, I’m somebody [unlike Sam] who is emotional. If I want to cry, I cry, if I need help from friends, I ask, and I’m playing this character who is suppressing the emotions and grief and isolating herself. I would spend days practicing and bringing myself to tears, then holding back. Eventually for me, that stuff had to come out so I would spend some nights just sobbing after a long day of shooting those scenes. It was even difficult to explain that to my girlfriend, who was in Brighton. At the time, I was in Glasgow and she’s not in the “industry” so trying to explain myself was just all really hard. Well, in reality, you’re losing a cast mate, as well as a character, so it would be hard to just turn it off.

Yeah, I mean, you know [Lip Service] was quite a life changing job for me. It lit up my music career, but I wonder how much of it was me going out there, on my own as an actor, without Laura (Laura Fraser played Cat) when I was really used to being part of her storyline. Suddenly, it was just me. It was really scary for me, so being able to play the emotional scenes, I was able to pull from what was going on around me. It was quite a scary time. When you lose some key characters, those remaining do feel that pressure to keep the series going, so I knew I had to prepare for that, and I felt ready. I knew Sam, I knew the character—playing someone so solid and stable, the grown up of the group and then knowing she was going to really be broken down, in a way viewers hadn’t seen was a credit to the writers, but it was really interesting to play that part because Sam handles things so different than I would in real life. What’s it like being an out lesbian actress doing sex scenes with actresses who aren’t gay?

I think all the girls aboard for this series are women lovers, like “women’s women,” if you will. As much as they’re straight, and have boyfriends, they believe in women and love women. So there was no awkwardness. I mean, I guess if there was any, I brought it on. Like, the first day I had to film a sex scene with Laura, I didn’t know whether to tell her that I was gay, or if she knew, or not and I struggled with that a little bit. Oddly, that day a new issue of Diva [UK lesbian magazine] arrived with my face on the cover, and it was all over the set because the girls were reading up on lesbian pop culture, so thankfully I never had to make the decision! (laughs) So, you know, it was absolutely fine. A sex scene is a sex scene, whether it’s with a man or a woman. But you know what? They did say it felt safer with a woman because we understand each other better, so they could say “Can you put your hand here when we film to kind of cover up this part of me because I don’t like that part of my body” and I would get it. Imagine? Those beautiful bodies on these women and they still have hang ups like anyone else. So, yeah, we do understand each other. We can say those things to one another. We understand being a little self conscious. Did you think the fan base would be this huge when you first signed on?

Not necessarily for Sam. But for the series, no doubt! I knew there was a need for it. I mean, I had my agent call up and get me the audition, because as a gay woman and an actress I knew if I didn’t try and bring my best I would be sitting home watching it and kicking myself. I knew I wanted to be a part of it. It’s been fantastic, the fans are incredible, the amount that they care, putting little videos online, posting stuff all over. They’re really invested. I mean, we are an international community, really, the gay community so the support from

As a gay woman and an actress I knew if I didn’t try and bring my best I would be sitting home watching it and kicking myself. I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”

all over is insane. We are like a nation unto ourselves with our clothes and our flag! Not saying it would happen, but what does Heather want to see for Sam next year?

Well, it would be nice if it picked up a bit later, so the grieving and emotional stuff happens from time to time, but we’d get to see Sam back in action at work, and maybe having some light at the end of the tunnel, you know? It would be great to see you smile more on the show!

(laughs) I just spent a fortune on my teeth, and I keep thinking, “I can’t believe I didn’t get to show them off!”

>>ANNA SKELLERN –“Lip Service” series star (Lexy) Your character, Lexy, is a welcome addition to season two! Were you a fan of Lip Service before you were cast?

I was, actually, yes! I found it on the BBC iPlayer, because I can never get organized enough to watch something on TV, but I was catching it weekly on the iPlayer, and really loved it. You know when you get cast in things, it’s usually like, “Oh, Ok cool” but when you get cast in something you like, that you’re already a fan of, wow, that’s great! Lexy stands out because she seems so logical and empathetic. With a career in the medical field, she seems to have her sh*t together. Are we in for any surprises with her?

Yeah, she does have her sh*t together, doesn’t she? I think you find that she’s a pretty grounded person, but her Achilles heel is that she kind of falls for people who may not be too good for her. I mean, she doesn’t seem to find anyone that would take care of her...or would be good for her, you know? But, I think SHE - 27 - 06/12

shep24_28_LipService.indd 4

5/31/2012 11:06:56 PM

she’s a pretty confident kind of girl! I mean, I wish I was more like Lexy in that way. It makes me feel important playing a doctor, though! I get thoroughly involved! “Is there a doctor in the house?” Hell yeah! (laughs) How hard is it, especially coming into an established series, to jump into things, being the new girl on the set and all of that?

They were all just so lovely. I mean, it’s all women, so it was much easier. The environment was really great. All the creative types, too, the writers, the cast, the producer – they’re all women. It’s so wonderful being a part of something like that. My wife detected a bit of Australia in your accent, are you from there? How is working in Glasgow?

I grew up partly in Sydney, Australia, yes, and Bristol and even spent some time in Palo Alto, California, the Bay area. Oh, Glasgow is lovely! It’s an awesome place. A lot of cool things are going on there all the time. You know, I think that lends to the closeness with the cast, because we’re all away from our regular families, so you all get close very quickly. Your character has major hot pants for Det. Sam and you have some great scenes with Heather Peace. Did she have any advice when you first arrived?

Has what?! Hot pants?! (laughs) I think Heather’s best advice was just simply showing me where to buy a nice bottle of wine in Glasgow! She’s great, isn’t she? So talented. You’re already a huge hit with fans all over, especially going by Twitter and Facebook. Do you follow any of it?

I’m not actually on Twitter or any of that at the moment, because I can barely respond to emails from, like, my Mom now. I would feel so guilty if I couldn’t answer everyone. But talk to me next week and I’ll probably be like “Twitter is my new favorite thing!” (laughs) I don’t know. Maybe one day. It all makes me feel a bit shy. At presstime, the talk is that the series will be available in the United States via Netflix soon, but nothing is confirmed as of now. However, the DVD and BluRay sets are available on Amazon.co.uk as the second season has just ended. You can always crawl all over YouTube, Facebook or BBC iPlayer’s website for full episodes and more on Lip Service.

pets of the month

Dogs and cats, while part of your family, are also descendants of wild animals. Their wild relatives live active, challenging lives, driven by their natural instincts. Your pet lives a very cushy, but often boring, existence. Their natural drive to be physically active and mentally stimulated, which when unexpressed, can cause stress-related illness and behavior problems. For the health and quality of life of your pet, give some thought to how you can offer your dog or cat opportunities to be the active, athletic animal they were destined to be. Feline Friends

What you have in your home is a captive animal. Housecats remain closer to their wild nature than most family dogs do. There are many things you can do to enrich your cat’s indoor environment. One way is to set aside time for a few short play sessions each day. Discover what type of toys they respond to and engage him or her with them. Use toys that encourage stretching, reaching, jumping and running. This type of activity is both physically and mentally stimulating. Your cat is answering his natural drive to hunt and pounce, and getting good aerobic exercise in the bargain. If you have a safe, fully enclosed outdoor area that contains your cat and keeps other critters out, your kitty companion will probably really enjoy being outside in good weather.

Just sayin’.

If you have a dog, it can be more challenging to keep them active enough to prevent boredom and stress-related behavior issues. The good news, however, is there are also many more ways to keep a dog well-exercised. Daily walks are very important for your pup, and they can improve your fitness level as well. Other great activities to enjoy with your dog are hiking, jogging, swimming, and fetching a ball or playing Frisbee. Even during winter months, there are ways to keep your dog active. There are hydrotherapy and warm water dog pools for swimming, indoor dog parks, and indoor agility and tracking training. Obedience training or a nose work class is an excellent resource to keep your dog challenged and mentally sharp, and so are treat-release puzzle toys. Most dogs prefer interactive toys that involve their humans in the game. So, don’t assume a pile of dog toys is all your pooch needs to find amusement. In fact, if you leave your pet with toys to self-entertain, it’s best to give them just one and put the rest aside. Rotate through all the toys one at a time and your pup will think every day brings a ‘new’ toy to play with.

Bumpless Road this Summer I have tried and featured quite a few products for the area down there, but Bikini Zone is definitely just the best. It doesn’t matter if you shave, wax or use any other type of hair removal, a couple of days later you will get either irritated and itchy or will feel the nasty bumps. Everyone’s skin reacts different but the ANTI-BUMPS SHAVE GEL is really good, it will keep the skin smooth while shaving without having to re-apply. Immediately after, use the AFTER SHAVE GEL (or try the creme for sensitive skin) which will give a cooling sensation to soothe the skin post hair removal. Use it for 3-4 days after shaving and say bye to the bumps. Bikini Zone’s newest product is the roll on version. You can find these products anywhere. Save $1 when printing coupon from their website. THIS APP

I just have to tell you about this app I just downloaded. If you need to watch your calorie & water intake and the calories you burn with your exercise routine this is the app to download. Basically, you enter your information (height, age, weight, goals, lifestyle) and it will generate your daily calorie intake, as well as goal cholesterol, sodium, carbs, sugar and it also tells you how much you have left to take per day. As you enter in your diary what you eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner & snacks, it generates a list of food by brand, quantity and calories for you to select (love this!) or you can create your own. Another feature I love is the exercise tracking. It will allow you to select time, distance and pace depending of your activities based on cardio or strength. For support, you can post your status to connect or invite friends. According to the app, you can lose 3x as much when you have support. You can also log your foods on their website and your calories are seamlessly synced between them. This is all-around, a great app. It’s free and iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, Android & Windows phone compatible. Visit your app market and track away! WWW.BIKINIZONEMYFITNESSPAL.COM

leo July 23 - aug 22

The planets are inviting you to come out and play with all of your loved ones, and to take some time out to enjoy your life. Whether it’s energetic physical or mental activity, you’ve got the power, so use it wisely. Use your creativity to see new solutions to old problems, but don’t turn your fresh ideas for a new start into old arguments, revolving around old habits and past mistakes. Be patient.

Luckily, you’re at your charismatic best, just when you’ve got plenty of opportunities to charm and chat your way to success. Turn socializing into business networking by sharing your ideas and goals with those who might help you achieve them. When problems occur, keep your temper to yourself, don’t engage in power struggles, maintain control of yourself and be part of the solution.

pisces feb 20 - mar 20 You’re feeling uncertain and confused about which direction to take towards the financial and emotional security you crave. Even though you feel you’re just chasing your tail, you need to stay super focused on future success in making significant changes in first, yourself, and your reactions, and then on the rest of your world. Don’t allow circumstances to destabilize your life. No outbursts!

Your mind is on over-drive, and you’re bursting with ideas and plans. However, your mind is also bursting with rigid opinions about what will and won’t work. Instead, explore the possibilities and then invite feedback. Improve your chances of success by improving your skills and over-all knowledge.

This could very well be a wishes come true kind of month, with the planets empowering you to laugh, love, and learn. You’re more aware of potential pitfalls as you approach them, so that you can navigate around them, and continue on your merry way even though there will be unexpected, as well as anticipated, bumps in the road as you explore all the possibilities.

All of your thoughts and energies are laser beamed on your finances. Stalled plans could be a blessing in disguise. Use the down time to review your budget, which should be realistically based on your current income, rather than your future projections. Keep a positive attitude, be open to suggestions and turn frustrated temper tantrums into positive actions.

It’s all about money, sex, and power this month. So what else is new? What’s new, hopefully, are the ways in you seek and obtain your goals. Now’s the time to show the Universe that you have indeed learned from your past attempts to get what you need and want from life, and will celebrate your successes with more of an attitude of gratitude. Conserve and renew what you have, even while accumulating more.

gemini may 22 - june 21

sagittarius nov 23 - dec 21

It’s time for you to show off, not only your witty, talented self, but your new, improved maturity and positive attitude. The planets conspire to spin you out of control when circumstances force you to change plans and improvise. Remember, the only thing you really have control over is your own reaction, so do everything possible to keep both twins in balance and go with the flow.

You’ll have plenty of chances to expand your horizons and your sphere of influence as the planets shift in your favor for the rest of the year. Woo Hoo! About time, too. You’ll have career opportunities that fulfill your wildest ambitions, as well as lots of opportunities for romantic-comedy-adventures. When hen the planets go back to direct motion, they’ll take your stuck patterns with them.

cancer June 22 - july 22

capricorn dec 22 - jan 20

Pay special attention to your dreams and intuition this month, as you strive to realize what drove you to make unwise choices in the past. Once you start the process of self-analysis, you’ll find making changes to your original plans easy. You’ll also be able to express yourself in a less emotional and more constructive way. Remember to turn your nervous and fearful attitude into positive energy by being open to the new.

Yippee! Saturn, your ruler, is finally going back to direct motion on the 25th, so all of the career moves you’ve made recently that seemed to be blocked, will now gain momentum again. In order to be prepared when you’ve got to go full steam ahead, you’ll have to spend some time improving your health, including your mental health. Remember what didn’t work, and don’t do it again.

You have an opportunity to mix business with pleasure, and promote yourself, your skills, and your ideas as enthusiastically as you can. Demonstrate your ability to change your negatives into positives by owning them and then adjusting them. Avoid angry confrontations, as they will not serve you. Instead, have meaningful conversations where you really listen, not just wait to speak.
