...............................................................................................................................................................................................

I’ve spent the last twelve-plus years of She keeping women in the spotlight— artists, activists, musicians, photographers, writers, actors, comics, business women—giving all of the important women of our past, present and future a forum to be seen and heard. With Women’s History Month upon us, it’s important that we take a look back at all the great women who have come before us, as well as the ones who continue to make history in our world, not just who they are but how they did it. While this may seem a little out of the ordinary, I’m going to use this time with you to tell you about something you probably won’t expect—a man. Not just any man, a truly great man, who I had the honor of having in my life and, who graced this world with his presence for 97 years. His name is Sid. Sid met his wife, Millie, when they were both very young. He took one look at her from across the room and knew she would be the love of his life. He married her and devoted his life to loving her with his whole heart. Through good times and bad, he was by her side loving her the way he believed any man should love his wife. Even in the last years of her life, as Alzheimer’s so changed the woman he loved, no matter how difficult it was, he kept his promise to stay by her side, and keep her home, until the moment he kissed her goodbye for the last time. Because Sid was fiercely loyal to those he loved. Sid and I had a very unique relationship and bond with each other. It was a bond that no one else understood but the two of us. It began from the moment he taught me to roller skate, telling me, “You will fall a few times, but I will always be there to help you get back up again and to tell you that I know you can do it.” Because that was exactly the kind of man Sid was. He knew that in life, there would always be times when those he loved would fall down. And when it happened, he didn’t judge them. He would just be there to help them back up, steer them in the right direction forward and say, “I know you can do it.” Sid was the kind of man who loved to build and fix things and he blessed me with his gift for taking things apart, tinkering around with them and then putting them back together even better than they were made to begin with. In my life, all the greatest things I have learned came from him. Perseverance, ingenuity, creativity, forgiveness, community service, loyalty, true unconditional lifetime love and to leave behind a legacy of tinkered around with things that need it and making the world better than it was before. While there have been many women who have inspired me, Sid was the one who taught me what it meant to be a gentleman—a true mensch—and made me the woman I am today. This amazing man, my grandfather, Sid, left this earth last month, quietly and with dignity, at home in his bed. But in his 97 years of tinkering, he left me and this world better than we were made to begin with. And that is a history worth repeating. See you next month!

Linda Eder, one of the great contemporary voices of our time, crowns her two-decade recording career by reuniting with prolific Broadway and pop composer Frank Wildhorn on a new album, Now. The new release marks the musical return of this legendary team after six years, and it’s the album Linda’s legion of fans have been waiting for. Eder’s transcendent voice is the perfect complement to Wildhorn’s lush, imaginative music. The 12 mostly new songs on Now elevate the spirit while capturing many moods. Following the release of Now, she’ll begin a series of concerts that will take her from coast to coast.

Recently retired from the porn industry, superstar Elektra Luxx (Carla Gugino) is pregnant with the child of late rock star Nick Chapel. She is trying to make ends meet by teaching a community college sex education class aimed at housewives, when a figure from her past, Cora (Marley Shelton), approaches her with a proposition. In exchange for the (stolen) lyrics to Nick’s last record, Cora needs Elektra to seduce her fiancée. Elektra reluctantly agrees to do this favor, setting in motion a series of hilarious events, as she tries to become a person of substance. Opens March 11in select cities.

Out on DVD from our friends at Wolfe Video is Elena Undone. Elegant and refined Elena (Necar Zadegan, TV’s 24) is a devoted wife to her pastor husband, mother to her teenage son, and daughter to her traditional Indian family. When she meets lesbian writer Peyton (ravishingly beautiful Traci Dinwiddie, TV’s Supernatural) Elena is confronted with intense, unexpected feelings for a woman—and their relationship evolves into a passionate romance. Charming, funny and poignant—as well as smoldering and sensual, this beautiful film is based on director Nicole Conn’s own life.

On March 18, IFC Films releases Cracks, starring Juno Temple, Ellie Nunn, Imogen Poots, Adele Mccann, Zoe Carroll, Clemmie Dugdale and Eva Green. In an austere and remote all-girls boarding school, the most elite students are the illustrious members of the schools’ diving team. Di, Lily, Poppy, Laurel, Rosie and Fuzzy are the envy of their fellow pupils who watch on as the girls compete for the attention of their glamorous teacher, Miss G. Miss G. in turn thrives on the attention she receives from her girls and believes it is her role to teach them the ways of the world. Also available on video-on-demand on March 23.

Lovelies Dana Delany and Jeri Ryan are back in the new ABC series, Body of Proof, beginning on March 29. Dr. Megan Hunt (Delany) was in a class of her own, a brilliant neurosurgeon at the top of her game. Her world is turned upside down when a car accident puts an end to her time in the operating room. Megan resumes her career as a medical examiner determined to solve the puzzle of who or what killed the victims. Megan’s instincts are sharp, but she’s developed a reputation for graying the lines of where her job ends and where the police department’s begins.

SuckerPunch is set in the 1950s, inside the vivid imagination of a young girl placed at a mental institution, with only her dreams providing the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls to band together and try to escape their terrible. The girls engage in fantastical warfare against everything from samurais to serpents, with a virtual arsenal at their disposal. Together, they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive. Stars Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Abbie Cornish and Carla Gugino.

IN THE NEWS >HRC RELEASED COMPREHENSIVE STATE-BYSTATE LEGISLATIVE REPORT

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC) has released a comprehensive state-by-state report detailing LGBT-related legislation in 2010 and an outlook for 2011. The report indicates that the majority of pro-LGBT legislation came in the form of anti-bullying legislation. The report also details expectations for 2011 with an expectation of an increase in LGBT-related legislation in the year ahead. “Faced head-on with the issue of bullying in our schools, many states attempted to address the growing problem yet much work remains to be done,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “With the 2011 state legislative sessions underway, we expect an increase in both pro- and anti-LGBT legislation and we will continue to work closely with state LGBT groups and allies in the fight for equality in communities everywhere.” HIGHLIGHTS OF THE REPORT INCLUDE: • MARRIAGE EQUALITY: Marriage equality took effect in both New Hampshire and the District of Columbia in 2010, while several state legislatures battled back proposals to amend state constitutions to prohibit same-sex couples from marrying. • RELATIONSHIP RECOGNITION: The legislatures in both Illinois and Hawaii passed civil union bills, but Hawaii’s governor vetoed the legislation. Colorado and New York added to the number of benefits available to same-sex couples. • SCHOOLS AND ANTI-LGBT BULLYING: Bills addressing bullying, harassment and discrimination faced by students made more progress than any other legislation with a direct impact on the lives of LGBT people. The new laws vary widely and not all provide enumerated protections, though all make substantial improvements on the prior laws. • ADOPTION: While Courts in two states struck down discriminatory laws that had made it nearly impossible for gay and lesbian parents to adopt, a new law in New York secured the rights of LGBT parents as equality advocates continued to beat back discriminatory legislation in several states. To view the report online, including interactive maps of current state law, visit: www.hrc.org/ StateToState2010.

MENOPAUSAL HOT FLASHES MAY BE A GOOD SIGN FOR HEART HEALTH An estimated three out of four women experience hot flashes associated with menopause. A new research released in the online edition of the journal Menopause suggests that women who suffer from hot flashes and night sweats may be at lower risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke and death. “Our research found that despite previous reports suggesting that menopause symptoms were associated with increased levels of risk markers for heart disease, such as blood pressure and cholesterol, the actual outcomes tell a different story,” said Northwestern Medicine endocrinologist Emily Szmuilowicz, M.D., who is lead author of the study. Szmuilowicz, who co-chaired the study along with JoAnn Manson, M.D., DrPH, and Ellen Seely, M.D. from Harvard Medical School, reviewed medical information from 60,000 women who were enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study and followed for ten years, to determine the relationship between menopause symptoms and cardiovascular events. The results are significant since there has been concern that menopausal symptoms, which result from instability in the blood vessels in the skin, may put women at risk for other types of vascular problems as well.

“AFTER CAREFUL CONSIDERATION, INCLUDING A REVIEW OF MY RECOMMENDATION,THE PRESIDENT HAS CONCLUDED THAT GIVEN A NUMBER OF FACTORS, INCLUDING A DOCUMENTED HISTORY OF DISCRIMINATION, CLASSIFICATIONS BASED ON SEXUAL ORIENTATION SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO A MORE HEIGHTENED STANDARD OF SCRUTINY. THE PRESIDENT HAS ALSO CONCLUDED THAT SECTION 3 OF DOMA, AS APPLIED TO LEGALLY MARRIED SAME-SEX COUPLES, FAILS TO MEET THAT STANDARD AND IS THEREFORE UNCONSTITUTIONAL. GIVEN THAT CONCLUSION, THE PRESIDENT HAS INSTRUCTED THE DEPARTMENT NOT TO DEFEND THE STATUTE IN SUCH CASES. I FULLY CONCUR WITH THE PRESIDENT’S DETERMINATION.” —Attorney General, Eric Holderon, on litigation Involving the Defense of Marriage Act on February 23, 2011

WHAT

THE IRS MAY OWE

WHERE

you money if you’re in A GAY MARRIAGE OR DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP BY BRANDON MILLER, CFP & JOANNE JORDAN, CFP, CLU

Did you ever think that the IRS would cut you a refund check because you’re in a gay marriage or registered domestic partnership (RDP)? Well, a recent IRS tax ruling makes that a distinct possibility. If you and your partner are married or in an RDP, you should consider taking advantage of this ruling which, in short, allows you to average your incomes on your individual federal tax returns. If you and your partner have a large difference in your individual incomes, that could mean a significant tax savings or even a refund. In July of 2010, the IRS ruled that samesex couples, in states with community property laws who are married or RDPs should treat their income as community property. Community property is a marital property regime that originated in civil law jurisdictions and is now also found in some common law jurisdictions. In the United States there are ten community property states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin. When filing their federal tax returns, these couples should now add their incomes together and divide by two. That becomes the income that each partner reports on their individual returns. While the partner with the lower personal income will pay more taxes, by reporting the couple’s average income, this income will be taxed at a lower tax rate. The partner with the higher individual income, by reporting the couple’s average, will pay less tax at their higher individual rate. That could mean thousands in savings on your combined family taxes. We are advising you to take advantage of this little known ruling to save you money on your 2010 federal taxes. We also encourage you to consider amending your past returns, which they can do as far back as three years, to see if the IRS actually owes you money. (It’s important to note that this federal tax ruling doesn’t affect your state tax returns where married and RDP couples should already be filing joint tax returns.)

But remember, whether you and your partner will save, and how much, depends on the totality of your tax situation. Some couples may even pay a bit more in federal income tax. If you will not save, you are not required to amend the prior year returns but only have to apply the new rules for your 2010 tax returns and for later years. In any case, you should check with your tax advisor to see if you are likely to save. If you are, your 2007 tax returns may need to be amended by April 15, 2011 to take advantage of these rules. The new rule should be most advantageous for couples who have one high and one low income. However, it could also benefit couples where incomes aren’t that far apart but where they straddle income tax brackets and where income averaging would bring the higher tax partner’s income below the threshold for the higher tax rate. The new IRS ruling should be a positive for many couples, but there are some situations where it might be harmful. For instance, if you or your partner qualifies for needs-based federal benefits, like disability, claiming a higher personal income would jeopardize your benefits.

Brandon Miller, CFP and Joanne Jordan, CFP are financial consultants at Jordan Miller & Associates in San Francisco, 415-623-2452, specializing in helping LGBT individuals and families plan and achieve their financial goals. They are licensed and registered to conduct business in FL. SHE -

BY MARIA ESPINAL PHOTO BY ADAM BOUSKA

On March 6th at 10 pm, be sure to tune in to Bravo for The Real Housewives of Orange County, Season 6. With the return of the housewives comes the newest cast member, Fernanda Rocha, 34. Rocha is a Brazilian, out lesbian, fitness expert, entrepreneur and the creator of the Brazilian Booty workout DVD. Just out of a long-term relationship, Fernanda is ready to win women’s hearts at The Dinah in Palm Springs, CA this coming April. WHY DO YOU THINK YOU WERE CHOSEN TO BE PART OF THE CAST OF THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF ORANGE COUNTY?

I own a gym in Laguna Beach and one of the housewives, Tamra, has been coming to work out there with some of the other girls. In addition to being beautiful, Tamra is very supportive of the LGBT community and we have become good friends. The producers are interested in showing more than just sex, but great friendships between women.

AT YOUR GYM, HOW DO YOU HELP YOUR CLIENTS KEEP THEIR MOTIVATION TO KEEP WORKING OUT AND MEET THEIR GOALS?

It is all a high energy experience that is fun, not a chore. When they start to see the results and start getting lingering looks and compliments, they are so happy and motivated to keep going. YOU WILL OBVIOUSLY BE OPEN ABOUT YOUR SEXUALITY IN THE SHOW. DO YOU THINK THAT IS A PLUS FOR YOUR CAREER?

I live in a very open city: Laguna Beach. It is just natural to be open about who you are here. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE FITNESS FIELD? WHAT ATTRACTED YOU THE MOST?

I started out as dancer growing up in Brazil and know how important it is to take care of your body. I went to school to learn more about nutrition and fitness and want to share it with others. It feels really good to help others get in shape and feel good.

1

AS WE CELEBRATE WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH, IS THERE A WOMAN OR WOMEN WHO HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE?

I would have to say my mother. Brazilian culture is very family-oriented and having a strong and loving family is the best support for someone who is going out and taking risks like starting a new business. I have a brother that I really love and rely on too. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, IS THIS YOUR FIRST TIME AT THE DINAH? IF SO, WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS?

Yes. This is my first time and I am so excited. I can’t wait to be at the pool party with interesting women from all over the world. I am so grateful to Mariah Hanson for inviting me.

HOW DID THE BRAZILIAN BOOTY WORKOUT COME ABOUT AND HOW DID YOU MAKE IT SHE -

shep16Fernanda.pmd

DIFFERENT FROM OTHER WORKOUTS?

So much of it is about the music from Brazil and really feeling it from your soul. When I do the workout, I feel it in my spirit and my body too.

BY DENISE WARNER

YOU SPEND A LOT OF YOUR FREE TIME IN FLORIDA. IN FACT, YOU RECENTLY WERE HONORED WITH THE KEY TO THE CITY IN KEY WEST. WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK HERE?

I love the beach. I’m from Georgia, but Florida feels like a completely different nation! I have friends who live there and love just hanging out. It was such a touching thing for me to be honored with the key to the city. I’ve spent a lot of time in Key West for many, many years and it was just a complete thrill. THIS PAST DECEMBER, I SAW CHELY WRIGHT’S TWEET SAYING SHE WAS GOING TO BE ON THE CBS MORNING SHOW WITH THE INDIGO GIRLS. I TUNED IN AND CAUGHT YOU GUYS PERFORMING. THE HOLLY HAPPY DAYS CD IS SO WARM AND SPECIAL. IT SOUNDS GREAT.

Yeah, this is our first holiday CD ever. The song you saw us sing was one Chely wrote called “It Really Is A Wonderful Life” and it’s just a classic, great Christmas song. We’re new friends with Chely Wright and I adore her. I just think she’s amazing. It came about so naturally. We recorded it in Nashville with a bluegrass band. We only did three shows and brought Chely on tour for that, along with Shawn Mullins. YOU’VE DONE A FEW SOLO GIGS LIKE AT WOMENFEST THIS PAST SEPTEMBER IN KEY WEST, AND MORE RECENTLY, THE 30A SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL IN SANTA ROSA, FL. HOW WAS THAT?

It was really a fun festival, a lot of songwriters and venues. It’s only the 2nd year, still very organic—you can wander around and catch sets, play sets. I got to play with Vicki Peterson of the Bangles. Chely was there, too and Gretchen Peters. I got to hear this one band I love called The Shadowboxers. It’s all along that really cool stretch of 30A—with all the little places and the beach. I READ SOMEWHERE THAT YOU GUYS WROTE THE CHRISTMAS SONGS IN MAY. HOW DO YOU WRITE CHRISTMAS SONGS IN MAY?

Well, you kind of have to. If you’re going to release it for the holidays, you have to start in the spring, you know? So, yeah, we listened to tons and tons of classics and favorites and we knew we wanted a few originals. I actually wrote mine in Mexico! As an artist or a writer, you just have to get into that creative space. DO YOU LIKE TO WRITE ABOUT PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OR JUST COMPLETELY MAKE SOMETHING UP BECAUSE IT SOUNDS GOOD?

I think it’s a combination of both. I mean, I don’t think you can help but write through your own lens to some extent. So, I like to think of my songs as a meld of things that I observe and my own personal experiences. It’s funny, though, but I would never write a song about somebody that was so personal or specific that it hurt someone, or was easily recognizable or anything. You know, you think you’re writing songs about other people or situations, but then, for me, it turns out I’ve written those songs about myself, for myself, I just didn’t know at the time. It’s kind of a weird, creative [psychological] channeling that happens in the process. WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU WANT TO DO WHEN YOU FINISH A TOUR?

(laughs) Just be home! Be at home, hanging out, cooking, having friends over, seeing my dogs. I mean, I love the travel, and I love my job, but I’m split right down the middle. I love being a homebody, too. I don’t need much more than the New York Times, a good cup of coffee, a fire if it’s cold, surrounded by the people I love. It’s a pretty simple need just to be surrounded by that. SHE -

WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO WHEN YOU HAVE TIME?

I love this new band out of Atlanta called The Shadowboxers. Whenever I go home, I just want to go see them live. I haven’t had this feeling since I first saw Sugarland and thought, “Those guys are going straight to the top,” you know? I love the band, The Weepies. I listen to a lot of pop. I love Rihanna’s voice. I listen to her a lot. Some rap, some rock.

backlash, you know? That demographic hasn’t been very accepting of her sexuality, so she really has had quite the ride lately. HAVING FRIENDS IN THE BUSINESS AT A TIME LIKE THAT SOUNDS MUCH NEEDED. THAT’S REALLY COOL.

You know, we’re very fortunate that we gravitate to a lot of really good people.

HOW DID THE CHELY WRIGHT CONNECTION HAPPEN?

THE INDIGO GIRLS REALLY DO A LOT OF GIVING BACK. HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT CHARITIES OR ORGANIZATIONS TO HELP AND SUPPORT?

We met her in New York. She was backstage at one of our shows and she was so nice. We love to stay in touch with nice people. (laughs) She’s easy energy and when we actually worked together, it was just fun. We’re like total friends now.

It’s easy and it’s not easy. We concentrate on the grass roots, community based groups, and other things based on networking, gay youth projects and women’s shelters. Those are no brainers, but the hardest part is just not having the time you’d like to spend on all of them.

I BET THE TIMING OF YOUR FRIENDSHIP AND COLLABORATION MEANT A LOT TO HER. I’M SURE WAS COMFORTING FOR HER TO HAVE A REAL FRIEND AT A TIME LIKE THAT, WHEN SHE HAD SUCH A

WHEN YOU LOOK WAY FAR BACK, LIKE TO THE FIRST FEW TIMES YOU AND AMY PLAYED SONGS TOGETHER BACK IN THE SCHOOL DAYS, DID YOU EVER IMAGINE THIS AWESOME JOURNEY AND CAREER?

SPOTLIGHT ON HER.

No, honestly, we’re just two friends that wrote songs and played guitars. We were in chorus together in high school, we grew up in the same neighborhood and our families knew each other. We were like two friends with the same thing in common. We each brought different strengths. It was so much fun and we both had a desire to play original music. The only thing we wanted to be sure of was that we didn’t stagnate, so we were always chasing that next gig, or opening for somebody, or putting together a tour. Back in those days, we could call college radios and bug them to play our songs. (laughs) So, we constructed a career but we never had any aspirations of doing anything more than having fun and coming together, but maintaining our independence as people and as artists. We just came from the same value system and sort of had this ying yang thing. It’s worked for 30 years. Here we are 30 years later.

Well, she’s had quite a bit of success in the country music industry so she’s used to the spotlight, but she had just come out, and the book was out. It was quite a wild ride for her. I mean, I can’t speak for her, but in being a friend I know she feels liberated by the experience but there’s also been a lot of

BY DENISE WARNER PHOTO BY LAURA CROST

Chely Wright was on top of the country music scene with hits like “Single White Female” and “Shut Up and Drive,” building a huge fan base and touring all over to sell out crowds. At the same time her success was thriving, her 7th CD, Lifted Off The Ground, was released, and her tell-all book, “Like Me” hit the stands. In a big, bold, brave move…Chely Wright came out. LET’S BEGIN BY TALKING ABOUT YOUR LATEST CD, WHICH I FIND IT HAS A LESS COUNTRY SOUND TO IT. WAS THAT INTENTIONAL?

Not really. My last record, Metropolitan Hotel, leaned more

toward a folk/Americana sound, so I guess it makes sense. I certainly didn’t try to make it sound not-country. It could have a lot to do with what I had been listening to at the time I wrote the songs for this record. I was listening to folk/ Americana records—singer/songwriter types, so perhaps I wrote melodies and lyrics that were in line with that. WHICH OF YOUR SONGS MEANS THE MOST TO YOU?

Gosh, I’m not sure I can answer that with a definitive few. Each song tends to represent an emotion that I experienced. I value each of those points in my life and how they manifested themselves into song. I guess off of this record, if I had to pick one that meant the most to me, it

would be “Like Me.” It’s the song I wrote during a time of deep despair, but it’s tender toward the person I was singing about. I liked what the narrative revealed to me about myself. DOES SONGWRITING FEEL DIFFERENT NOW, OR BETTER YET, DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR FANS ARE LISTENING...DIFFERENTLY?

I think the fans do listen differently now and that’s okay. That’s their role in this whole creative transaction. They get to listen the way they want to. Now that they have a bit more insight into who I really am, I think that some listeners feel more connected. Time will tell if writing feels different to me. It doesn’t now though.

clarification to her, we discussed a few details of my clarification—her response was, “Oh, I didn’t really realize that” and we went on with the interview. Otherwise, I never would have brought up the issue of record sales.

Some people in entertainment who are in the closet enjoy an underground network of people who know their secret and help protect them. That network also provides for them, at least, a small community in which they can be themselves. I didn’t have a network like that. It was, of course, my decision not to share my secret with a chosen few. I didn’t feel safe to do that. Some do.

NEXT STEP IN YOUR CAREER?

Of course, I did. Having my sales drop drastically was something that I fully anticipated. I had a pretty good idea about what the commercial stakes were in coming out of the closet. I made peace with it and moved forward.

YOU MENTIONED BEFORE THAT YOU WEREN’T JUST IN THE CLOSET—YOU WERE BEHIND THE SHEETROCK IN THE CLOSET—CAN YOU EXPLAIN THAT A LITTLE?

AS IF DATING ISN’T HARD ENOUGH WHEN

IS THERE A GENRE OTHER THAN COUNTRY THAT YOU’RE INTERESTED IN?

WHAT WORRIED YOU THE MOST ABOUT COMING OUT?

YOU’RE ALREADY IN THE SPOTLIGHT, HOW MUCH HARDER IS IT NOW?

I’m interested in music, music that will be graded on its merit. Is it compelling or not? That’s what interests me. Genres are ambiguous, at best.

Exposing myself to condemnation and negativity scared me the most. But again, I steeled myself in all the ways that I knew how, to prepare myself—spiritually, physically and emotionally. I did a lot of work within myself and with my small group of supporters to help prepare me for all that would come with being a publicly “out” person who wanted to be an effective voice in the LGBT community.

I think dating is hard for everyone, celebrity or not. Honestly, I’ve been a somewhat “known” person for about half of my life and I guess I’m used to a certain group of people being interested in who I spend my time with.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Whoa. Okay, here are some of the “Whos:” President Clinton, my sister, Oprah Winfrey, Rosie O’Donnell, Rev. Welton Gaddy, Rodney Crowell, Mary Karr, my dad, children, Dr. Eliza Byard, Martin Luther King, Jr., Mary J. Blige. And that’s just a few. The “Whats:” Sunsets, a great bike ride, an amazing photograph, Degas, the love of pets, some dreams I have and pure friendships. YOU’VE DONE SOME WORK WITH THE INDIGO GIRLS THIS YEAR. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?

The Indigo Girls are simply amazing, of course. I have become such a fan over the past couple of years. I think they’re two of the best songwriters of our generation. I did a few shows with them and they were so, so, so good to me. It was a real honor to have them record a song that I wrote. That’s forever and that’s cool. YOU’RE A SHINING STAR IN THE COUNTRY MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHICH IS A BIT NOTORIOUS ABOUT THEIR VIEWS REGARDING HOMOSEXUALITY. IN ANOTHER RECENT INTERVIEW YOU TALKED ABOUT THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF COMING OUT AND HOW IT HAS AFFECTED YOUR SALES, WHICH IS SOMETHING WE ALMOST NEVER HEAR ABOUT.

I made that singular comment about reduced record sales during an interview and my comment got picked up by a bunch of other new outlets. I was being interviewed a couple of weeks ago and in one of the questions that the journalist was asking, she made a comment about how coming out had helped my career. I had to stop her and clarify that although coming out may have made me more known in the LGBT community (which included her), that my coming out certainly did not help my career. I made the

It’s been incredible. Living honestly beats the heck out of living in hiding. I will say though, that my understanding of this freedom is time released. Each day, new experiences reveal how profound my freedom is to me.

Fine, I guess. Ha-ha. Here’s the thing, one person cannot represent an entire community and I’m not trying to. For the most part, I think the LGBT community has recognized that I’m just doing my best to do the right thing. I’ve felt incredible support from the community.

Thousands. It’s beyond anything I ever imagined; the ripple effect of my telling my story. It makes my cry nearly every day; tears of gratitude and joy that so many people have felt comfort and kinship because I wrote my story down. It wasn’t just that I declared that I’m gay, but it seems to be that I wrote the nuances of my entire experience. I’ve had so many people say, “Thanks for writing your book, I felt like I was turning the pages of my life.” I am thankful every time someone says that to me. Oh, gosh no. I’m not really the “go out” type. Never have been. When people do Tweet that they saw me in the grocery store or on the train in NYC, it’s not really that odd to me. When you see someone in person that you’ve seen on TV or on the internet, sometimes you just have to look. I mean, really, I almost hit Alec Baldwin on my bike in Central Park last year. BY ROBIN L. BODIFORD, M.S.W., J.D. BY MARISSA COHEN

BANKRUPTCY: THE LAST CHOICE, OR THE BEST CHOICE PART I During this time of financial upheaval, more people find themselves in untenable financial circumstances not just because of poor money management, but also to job loss, medical bills or partner death. For most people, filing for bankruptcy is the last thing that enters their mind. However, for some, it may be the better choice. DANGER SIGNS AND MISTAKES TO AVOID: In the downward spiral of financial chaos, you may find yourself so far in debt that you are only paying the minimum balance on your credit cards. Next, you are transferring balances to lower interest rates, taking cash advances to pay for living costs or to pay the minimum credit card balance. Often clients refinance their homes and use home equity to pay off outstanding credit cards, thus turning unsecured credit card debt into debt that must paid off if you wish to keep your home. Liquidating retirement assets to pay off unsecured credit card debt is the next seemingly logical tactic to try to free yourself from crushing consumer debt: Again, a bad idea, as you are turning an exempt asset (one that creditors cannot take from you) into a nonexempt asset – cash. This kind of debt is inexorably fed by penalties and unconscionable interest rate hikes by the credit card companies, who lobbied Congress to remove usury laws that, in the past, once protected consumers from outrageous interest rates. Next, borrow from your family and friends, if you can. Finally, long before bankruptcy enters your mind, you will consider signing up for a debt consolidation company that promises to negotiate with your creditors and consolidate your payments with you paying a huge chunk of your monthly budget into the consolidation plan. (Of course, they take a hefty chunk for their fees right off the top.) Suddenly, despite all these efforts, creditors sue you. Your “representative” from the consolidation company cannot explain why there are judgments against you. With your wages garnished and your bank accounts frozen, do you finally consider the unthinkable: Bankruptcy? Should I talk to an attorney? Bankruptcy is a federally sanctioned opportunity for those in debt to turn their life around. If you qualify for a Chapter 7 discharge of debts, you may keep your home and its equity, most, if not all, of your personal property. Most debt is wiped out, including consumer and medical debt. If you have non-exempt assets, such as investment property or other financial assets, you may qualify as a Chapter 13 debtor, where some of the debts are wiped out and you can create a reasonable 3 to 5 year repayment plan. DETOXIFYING YOUR BODY: A NEW CLEANER YYOU! OU! BY ANNA LEPELEY, M.S. PHD (CAND.), CSCS, CISSN

So, the holidays came and went and all was a festive blur. Unfortunately, you still recall Uncle Frank grabbing your grandmother’s derrière, but luckily the vodka and spiked eggnog were nearby to numb all your senses during family gatherings. Don’t forget New Year’s, when everyone embarked on alcohol bulimia because, you never know, the world might end that night. In short, you’ve treated your body like hell. Now, it’s time to make amends. There are plenty of products and methods out there purported to detoxify your body or provide an antioxidant boost to your frequently “poisoned” lifestyle which exposes you to various forms of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress poses a threat to the integrity of our cells and tissue, putting our immune system, aging process and overall health at stake as a result of free radical formation. (Think of free radicals as little bastards that that want to corrupt your health.) Excessive and persistent oxidative stress eventually leads to oxidative damage if your antioxidant capacity cannot combat the free radical accumulation. Most of our daily encounters with oxidative stress are simply inevitable (exposure to air pollutants) while others may be optimally controlled (stress management, sufficient sleep, adequate diet, moderation of alcohol intake and presence of exercise regimen). Ironically, exercise, as healthy as it is, temporarily inflicts a level of oxidative stress on our bodies. But please do not make that an excuse not to exercise! Exercise actually boosts our antioxidant capacity. As a matter of fact, the more accustomed you are to an exercise regimen, the less oxidative stress will even faze your body. Working up a sweat is also an added detox benefit from exercise, but there are other, more pleasurable methods of achieving that. The terms “detoxify” and “antioxidant” are used more loosely these days than the label of “girlfriend”. The good news is our bodies are already equipped with a lymphatic system, kidneys and a liver to detoxify, but I’ll fill you in on some cost-effective, simple tips to keep your body happy and clean without spending a fortune on a bottle of purple, bad-tasting crap. Stay away from those liquid detox diets. You’re pretty much just starving yourself for no good reason, slowing down your metabolism and putting your immune system at risk. Cut back on the alcohol, quit cigarettes, try not to inhale the fumes of 18-wheelers, eat more fiber, drink plenty of water, avoid processed foods (i.e., artificial colors/sweeteners, anything in a box) and get out of your unhealthy relationship. Boost your antioxidant capacity with supplements like vitamin C and E, alpha-lipoic acid, EGCG (from green tea) and/or fish oil (or eat lots of sushi!). Also, incorporate a good quality whey protein in your daily supplement regimen. Those big tubs of protein aren’t just for meatheads! Do a little yoga to detox your mind. It really works! Spray on some patchouli. Listen to some Enya. Drink raw green drinks. Whatever you feel makes you cleaner and more natural. Just keep shaving those armpits and elsewhere, ok? Here’s to a “new,”cleaner you!

SHE -

CON VERONICA ESPINAL

SOY MUJER

SHE SCOPES

WITH THE VILLAGE SAGE

AQUARIUS JAN 20 - FEB 19

LEO JULY 23 - AUG 23

You’re ready to pack your past and present into your suitcase and take off for an exciting adventure to your future. Quick changes are taking place that will affect how you live your everyday life. Your ideas are all geared towards creating your next ‘big thing.’ Make sure you have a realistic plan and don’t take any unnecessary chances or short-cuts, be patient, be flexible and be positive. Enjoy the journey and the experiences.

You have the opportunity to meet new interesting people who will bring diversity into your routine. Remember to be open to the changes that are sure to come about from this expansion of your mind to the other possibilities to achieve your goals. Be realistic about cash flow projections and revise your budget accordingly. Be willing to change whatever isn’t working and make adjustments to the plan, but don’t lose your determination to make it work.

PISCES FEB 20 - MAR 20

VIRGO AUG 24 - SEPT 23

You’ll be emotionally and mentally stimulated enough to break out of your current situation. The only way to actually do that is to be proactive about making changes happen. You can have your fondest hopes and wishes come true, if, besides wishing on a star, you have a realistic plan. Stay positive and optimistic about your financial future, be willing to put in extra effort and be open to other people’s good ideas.

Your usual logical self is being challenged by your emotional self for control of your words and deeds. It’s important to think before you speak or you’ll create more problems. You need to hone your people skills and make sure that you take everyone else’s feelings into consideration. Adopt a ‘win-win’ attitude in all of your dealings. Compromise and cooperate your way to successfully complete your tasks and achieve your goals. Use your gut whenever you’re unclear.

ARIES MAR 21 - APR 19

LIBRA SEPT 24 - OCT 23

You’re energized and you want to rush right out and implement every idea you have. In order to actually achieve your goals, you’ll have to make a plan. You’ll also have to be realistic about your past limitations and take the appropriate steps to correct them. Don’t let yourself wallow in negativity if things don’t move as quickly as you’d like. Stay optimistic and don’t try to move the mountain. Just go with the flow.

You’re focused on self-improvement and are actually looking forward to implementing new strategies to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself. Commit to making a schedule for exercising and get serious about improving your health, starting with your diet. Be careful not to go overboard and stay balanced. That includes your emotional responses to different people and situations. Relax, use your charm to diffuse tension and create a harmonious dialogue and a win-win scenario.

TAURUS APR 20 - MAY 20

SCORPIO OCT 24 - NOV 22

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to network yourself and your services. Don’t be shy, let everyone know what your goals are and then ask for their help. You’re willing to take different routes to get where you’re going and are actually looking forward to having many fine adventures on the way from here to there. Enjoy the experiences, embrace the changes and be patient. Remember, the reward for patience is patience.

Your passions and desires are driving you to be very proactive in going after what you want, even if it’s not what you actually need. You’ll have many opportunities to be creative and color outside the lines. It’s time to enjoy life’s pleasures, even while fine-tuning your everyday self into a more productive you. It will take some time to make positive changes. Be careful that you don’t take spontaneous fun and turn it into a big mistake.

GEMINI MAY 21 - JUN 21

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21

Your mind is racing along at warp speed and you’re ready to share all of your thoughts in a ‘stream of consciousness’ monologue. However, you would be wise to slow down and consider who to trust with your ideas. Don’t let yourself become impatient with business as usual. Instead, find ways to channel your nervous energy into productive task completion and in developing new strategies to achieve your goals.

You’ve been coming up with reason after reason not to take action about life changes, and while you certainly shouldn’t do anything impulsive, it is the right time to lay the foundation for your future. Tending the seeds of ideas takes time, patience and purpose. You have the gift of gab and once you start talking, you become like ‘The Pied Piper,’ attracting supporters that will help you implement your plans.

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22

CAPRICORN DEC 22 - JAN 19

You have the will power to create an action plan for your life and then follow it to the letter, but that doesn’t mean everyone involved agrees with you. Discuss, rather than dictate, and compromise when need be to ensure everyone involved is working together towards the common goal. Remember the only person you have any control over is yourself. The other significant people in your life you have to convince or charm into seeing things your way.

This month, the Universe has added enhanced intuition to your already formidable powers of focus, reason and perseverance, making you unstoppable as you bring your ideas to life. Your imagination and your expertise combine to create new opportunities, both professionally, and personally. However, you’ll have to be patient and methodical about implementing even your most brilliant idea. Be sure to balance your responsibilities at work and home and balance your fantasies with your realities.
