I’m ten stories up, flat on my stomach, eyes shut with my face buried in my hands. A terror is coursing through my veins the likes of which I do not believe I have ever felt before. I hear a voice coming from next to me, “Tina, are you praying??” I can’t answer. I am too terrified to speak. Yet I hear myself thinking, “No, but I think maybe I should.” So I do. Out loud. I ask for safety for myself and my two companions, new friends I made less than 12 hours ago, one of whom was previously claiming to not be afraid but is now spewing a configuration of expletives that make me seem almost nun-like. I ask for courage, more courage than I think I can muster on my own. I ask for peace enough to calm my heart, which seems like it might beat it’s way right out of my chest. I ask for the ability to open my eyes. I feel the tug of my own too much fried chicken and biscuit eating weight as the bed beneath me drops and I am dangling in midair. The steel grate in front of me opens just as I end my prayer and open my eyes. And then, I am flying. My arms directly out in front of me, like Superman, at a crazy 35 miles an hour, smiling and waving at the hundreds of people ten stories below me who are cheering and watching in awe for about four city blocks. My eyes well up with tears as I greet my two new friends at the end of their flight. I am overcome with emotion. I have just done something amazing, something so far out of my comfort zone that, although zip lining was on my bucket list, I never thought I would be able to bring myself to do it. And I feel more alive than I can ever remember feeling before. In the morning, I will put another checkmark on that bucket list as I climb into a helicopter and fly over the Grand Canyon. Something else that is miles away from the comfort of sitting on my sofa watching other people experience life on television. And I am not afraid. I am exhilarated beyond belief. The saying is true you know. Life really does begin the moment you step out of your comfort zone. So, once you are done reading this month’s issue, get off your proverbial sofa. I’ll catch you on the other side. See you next month.

Kiesza’s debut album, Sound of a Woman is as unique as the fact that Kiesza was once a code breaker in the Canadian Navy. She’s cracked the code to success with this feverdream, pop/dance 90s style collection of songs, including a gender-bending, sexy jam “So Deep.” “Losin’ My Mind” is full of Kieza’s own sass and style, sprinkled with the beat of a 90s Britney track, and “No Enemiesz” is simply amazing. Available now.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part I follows Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in the aftermath of the destruction of the games. Now, she deals with flashbacks as District 13 pressures her to pick up where she left off and bring down the Capitol. It’s up to her to fight her personal demons in order to save Peeta and fight for the freedom of Panem. With Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore. In theaters November 21.
Coming to NBC on Monday, November 17 is State of Affairs. Katherine Heigl plays CIA analyst and top presidential advisor Charleston Tucker. Charleston’s got to make constant judgment calls in order to protect President Constance Payton (Alfre Woodard). The catch? Charleston used to be engaged to the president’s son before he was killed in a terrorist attack. This highoctane thriller promises a breathless ride. With Sheila Vand.
The undisputed Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin has just released the amazing Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics. The 18-time Grammy Award winner takes on covers of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” and Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” to name a few. Her version of “Midnight Train to Georgia” is raw and real. Simply put, this is a musical genius at her interpretive best.
Bette Midler drops the girl group tribute, It’s the Girls, on November 4. Not only is it Midler’s first album since 2006, but it’s also utterly fantastic, a timeless span of the best girl group songs. From the countrypop version of The Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love” and the mind-blowing cover of TLC’s “Waterfalls” to The Andrews Sisters’ “Bei Mir Bist Du Schon,” this collection is a must for any Midler fan.
In Bravo’s first scripted series, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce (premieres Dec 2, 10 pm), Abby (Lisa Edelstein) writes bestselling marriage guides, but her own marriage is a wreck. As she slowly finds her way back to herself, her girlfriends are there to help. The season’s guest stars include Orange is the New Black’s Laverne Cox and Broadway great Bernadette Peters. With Janeane Garafalo, Alanna Ubach, Virginia Williams.
NOT TO BE MISSED: Just in time to add to your Christmas playlist, grab yourself, and a friend, a copy of supervoice Idina Menzel’s Holiday Wishes. GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) released its biennial National School Climate Survey report, which shows how ongoing hostile school climates impact the safety and mental health of LGBT students, as well as their educational outcomes. This latest edition of GLSEN’s National School Climate Survey, which first began in 1999 and remains one of the few studies to examine the middle and high school experiences of LGBT youth nationally, includes four major findings: 1- Schools nationwide are hostile environments for a distressing number of LGBT students. Seventy-four percent were verbally harassed in the past year because of their sexual orientation and 55 percent because of their gender expression. As a result of feeling unsafe or uncomfortable, 30 percent missed at least one day of school in the past month. 2- A hostile school climate affects students’ academic success and mental health. LGBT students who experience victimization and discrimination at school have worse educational outcomes and poorer psychological well-being. Grade point averages for these students were between nine and 15 percent lower than for others. 3- Students with LGBT-related resources and supports report better school experiences and academic success. LGBT students in schools with an LGBT-inclusive curriculum were less likely to feel unsafe because of their sexual orientation (35 percent vs. 60 percent). Unfortunately, only 19 percent of LGBT students were taught positive representations about LGBT people, history or events. 4- School climate for LGBT students has improved somewhat over the years, yet remains quite hostile for many. Increases in the availability of many LGBT-related school resources, due in part to efforts by GLSEN and other safe school advocates, may be having a positive effect on the school environment. LGBT students reported a lower incidence of homophobic remarks than ever before – from over 80 percent hearing these remarks regularly in 2001 to about 60 percent now. Estimating the Economic Boost of Marriage for Same-Sex Couples in Puerto Rico According to the william institue, extending marriage to same-sex couples in Puerto Rico would generate an estimated $17.2 million in spending to the Commonwealth’s economy. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the most recent data available, 4,742 samesex couples live in Puerto Rico. Of those couples, the Institute estimates that fifty percent (2,371 couples) would choose to marry in the first three years, a pattern that has been observed in Massachusetts and elsewhere. The marriages that would occur in the first year alone would bring about $11 million in revenue to Puerto Rico that year.
The Paley Center for MEDIA WIll Celebrate TV’s Impact on LGBT Equality The Paley Center for Media today announced that its annual Los Angeles gala will celebrate the critical role television has played in the issue of LGBT equality over six decades, and will launch an expanded LGBT media collection chronicling the history of LGBT images in the medium. The fundraising evening will recognize television’s impact on LGBT equality and celebrate the trailblazing work by networks, studios, producers, series, and other creative talents across the media landscape which, character by character and show by show, changed America’s awareness, understanding, and perceptions, ultimately helping bring this country to the precipice of full LGBT equality. The evening is set for November 12, 2014, at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles and will benefit and grow the Paley Center’s public, industry, and education programs.

What a year it’s been for our Queen of Rock! New manager, new album, new label, new marriage! Melissa Etheridge is shaking things up with her 12th album, This Is M.E., out now on iTunes, and in stores everywhere in the U.S and Canada, with eleven new tracks that will fit you like your favorite pair of comfy jeans. Melissa spoke with me between rocking out with Queen Latifah, hanging with Rosie and the girls at The View and before hitting the road for her tour, about her music, her wife and more. Your music has always been such a reflection of your life and this is a great bunch of music! So, I’m thinkin’ you’re in a great place right now?
There ya go! That is exactly the situation! You put this album out on your own label, so officially, you’ve become an “indie rocker chick.” How does that feel?
and yeah, it’s a little scary, but it’s exciting and fun. It’s a sense of control I’ve never had. We lesbians are such a possessive fan base and I feel like we share every minute of this ride with you: the music, the concerts, even the criticisms, but this album is getting really well-received. How does that make you feel? Because we’re ecstatic!
(laughs) You know what? You’re right. You are all along for the ride with me and the album is being very well received. It feels like what that means is it’s finally okay to be a Melissa Etheridge fan! I like that! Actually, this feels like the perfect time to become a Melissa fan. If there are youngsters who may not be as familiaror anyone really- I think this is the album that could get anyone hooked.
Aww, that’s really great of you to say.
Yeah, that’s true. I am an indie rocker chick now! That’s me! I love it! It feels so good! You know, I feel like I jumped off a sinking ship. Every year, the record industry plummets a little more, so I knew I had to shake things up. I felt like my career had sort of hit a plateau. I mean, it was fine, but I like to keep things moving and grow my business, so I got a new manager and we released this on my own label. It’s been a big year for me. I’ve made some really big changes and it’s a new way of doing business for me, but it’s been the best move when you think about it because it’s my music now. Before, if I wrote a song and someone wanted to use it in something, Island Record got paid, not me. They owned my songs, thy owned my masters [tracks] and basically, they owned my voice. Now it’s all mine and I can do whatever I want. I make the choices, I make the decisions
Your latest album has some really different sounds integrated into it which was awesome, but this one has that super familiar feeling, like wearing your favorite comfy beat up, broken-in jeans. It had a “back to basics” feel to it. Was that intentional?
You know, the intention of this record was really to let it be what it was, naturally. It came from a lot of collaboration and the artists I worked with love the part you just describedthe “comfy favorite jeans” feel of my music. They encouraged me, because sometimes as an artist, I think “Maybe I should do something new,” but they kept saying, “Do what you’re comfortable at doing, that’s what we love, that’s what people love and that’s what we want.” Quite honestly, that’s what I’m good at. I do it well and that’s what happened. I relaxed, I let myself come through, I trusted in what I know, and it was almost too easy. So, what you get is exactly what you said, “a very comfortable” assortment of music. I’m just so pleased with it. The music industry changes so fast and so often. Is it hard to figure out your place in it? Like when you decide to start a project, is there a “do I stick with what I know?” or “do I try to go fresh and new and different?” thought process behind it?
I have done that before. I’m listening to what’s on the radio and I think too much. But I realize that I do best by doing what I know best. The last album was me saying, “I’m just going to do what I love to do,” and it was all me trying new things, new beats, new stuff. Here we are on this album, where I felt like I was being experimental and it turns out I was really being my true self and it does come through in the SHE - 16 - 11/14

music. So, my best bet is to just trust in what I love and what I know best.
parture for Queen Latifah and she sounded fantastic!
You’ve been making rounds while promoting This is M.E. with TV gigs, Rosie and The View, all talk shows and then suddenly, you & Queen Latifah singing Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” was AHMAZE-ING! The video goes f’ing viral. Tell us about that!
You both did! I just said to a friend the other day, after I had listened to your entire album, “It’s times like this that I realize, when a sister can play a guitar that good, they’re always going to get all the girls,” and you have!
(laughs) Wasn’t that nuts? Oh my God, that was so fun! (she cracks up) Did it go “F’ing viral?” (laughs) That’s funny, Denise!
You have! You know you have!
Yeah! It was everywhere! I even put it on my phone. I just keep it there so I can watch it whenever I want because I love it so much!
so, I’m wondering what makes this relationship with Linda so different?
Now, seriously, that’s an example of Queen Latifah being brave. She said “I want to sing with you,” and I was like, “This is going to be epic.” It was her music director who picked “The Chain” and I instantly thought, “Oh man, this is going to rock!” I’ll tell you something, I love when people are down with doing stuff like that. It’s so fun and I’m glad it got such a good reaction because it was incredible to do it. She has a great band and they were amazing. It was so special because that’s a big de-
(Melissa bursts out laughing) Whaaaaat?? (jokingly) I have all the alimony to prove it! ( laughs) I’m kidding!
This relationship is so healthy. It’s so good for me. She has her own life, her own stuff, nothing of mine reflects on her. She is her own person. That’s really important and we’re the exact same age. Our birthdays are on the same day, so we experience things in very similar ways. I can see where that would be important at this stage.
I just love her. And she loves me so much! ( laughs) I mean, seriously, I just told her yesterday, “Life with you is so easy, I just love you,” and I mean that! It’s just amazing every day.
That’s so good to hear, because as fans, we know what you’ve been through. Unfortunately, I guess, because it’s a part of being in the public eye. It’s all pretty much out there, the good and the bad. But, I can see such a genuine happiness in you and it seems to resonate in your music, on your face. You can see the happiness. And that song that you wrote for your wife, “Who Are You Waiting For.” Oh my God. Sigh and melt!
(laughs) That’s so sweet, thank you. It meant a lot to us both. I am just so happy and you know, another thing is, I’ve found a love for myself because you have to take care of yourself. I had to learn that. It’s up to me to take care of myself and love myself first. That’s really made a huge difference in my life. Your relationship has been in the spotlight a lot this year- you were married this year, you have a song on the album written for her- are you more comfortable at this stage of your life with the lack of privacy that comes with fame?
There’s a certain part of the notoriety that is a bummer, sure, but I can’t just take the good that comes with it and not the bad. I guess the
SHE - 17 - 11/14

hardest part is understanding that you can’t control what people think. They can read something and interpret it in such a way that is nothing like what you intended when you said it. I think any celebrity knows this part. Things get taken out of context. That is really difficult when people think badly about you because of something they’ve read or heard and you don’t get a chance to explain yourself. You have to find a way to let that go. So, sometimes, I do get a little down about the lack of privacy. I feel protective of my relationship and family, but most of the time, I just try and not let it bother me. There is so much new talent out there every day. Have you ever turned on the radio or the TV and saw or heard someone who really blew you away?
Oh gosh, lately I haven’t had time to really sit in front of the television and see what’s happening! But, I think the last time I remember someone really catching my attention was a few years ago. My kids were younger and they were watching American Idol. I was in the other room when they came running in, yelling, “Mom! Come here, you have to see this!” and they had paused it on this girl and her guitar. It was Crystal Bowersox! So, yeah, there is a lot of talent out there, I’m sure. I just can’t think of anyone recently who’s blown me away. You’ll be in South Florida this month. Do you have any special memories or anything you love about that area?
Oh, South Florida! Tons of memories! On one of our first family vacations, we drove from Kansas to Florida. I guess it was around 1969. My Dad loaded us up and off we went- right into Hurricane Camille! (laughs) So we cut that short! (laughs) But, no, I love the area. I have some great memories with my Dad. I adore Key West. That’s such a special place. It’s just the coolest, little funky place to relax and chill out. follow melissa at melissaetheridge.com @metheridge • /MelissaEtheridge

Lesbian royalty, Miami icon and tennis legend Martina Navratilova never thought she would end up an icon in the LGBT world. A member of the elite group of tennis legends, Navratilova had no idea when she began hitting a tennis ball against a wall at age five, that she would end up as a legend. Navratilova won her first U.S. Open in 1983. Winner of 56 Grand Slam championships, this left-handed immigrant and openly gay athlete dominated the sport with a No. 1 ranking for 331 weeks and a rare Triple Crown at the 1987 US Open. By 1992, she broke the tournament titles record with 158 titles. In 2000, she was inducted in the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Referred to as one of the “Top Forty Athletes of All Time” by Sports Illustrated and “the greatest singles, doubles and mixed doubles player who’s ever lived,” by Billie Jean King, Navratilova has become synonymous with tennis. But to Martina, tennis is much more than competition, strategy and athleticism. Tennis gave Navratilova her life. “All the people that are important in my life are directly or indirectly because of tennis,” said Navratilova.
“
What’s really heartwarming is that people are supportive instead of snickering and pointing.”
Born a Czechoslovakian with the spirit of an American, Navratilova regularly speaks out for equality. She came out in 1981, when most of us were still getting to know the inside of our closets. She remains active in women’s issues, the LGBT community, animal rights and more. “Martina was the first legitimate superstar who literally came out while she was a superstar,” said Donna Lopiano, Executive Director of the Women’s Sports Foundation. Navratilova never bought into the preconceived notions that brought about bigotry and discrimination in the LGBT community. She was raised to believe in herself. “I must have received a good dose of confidence from my family,” said Navratilova. “[I’m proud of the fact that] I am out. I am not hiding it. It has made a difference to a lot of people. Who else am I going to be?” Tennis gave Navratilova an avenue to express her love when she recently proposed to her long-time girlfriend, former Russian beauty queen and Russie Blanche cosmetics owner, Julia Lemigova in front a packed crowd at the U.S. Open in September. “It brought home how far we have come,” said Navratilova, about the world’s reaction to their engagement. “What’s really heartwarming is that people are supportive instead of snickering and pointing. Everyone knows about it. [It’s] much bigger than I thought it would be.” Urging Floridians to speak out for equality, Navratilova recognizes the rapid acceleration of progression on LGBT rights and public opinion. Currently, Florida laws do not allow same-sex marriages, but the couple may marry elsewhere and celebrate their union in Florida. “It’s not about whether or not I get married, rather about being able to do so,” she said.

With five dogs, two kids and a passion for life, Navratilova embraces Lemigova’s children as her own, sharing her heart and knowledge with her two young daughters. She also shares with them her passion for health. “My 13-year-old was eating cereal and looked at me funny when I was eating an avocado and yogurt for breakfast. I looked at the ingredients list on her cereal and I only knew four ingredients on it.” That passion for health can also be seen in her breast cancer activism. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, Navratilova’s cancer is now a memory. However, her message remains strong, as she continues to encourage women to pay attention to yearly checkups. “When you get that notice in the mail that your dog needs a rabies shot, you go that week. Then you get the notice about your mammogram. You ignore it. The next thing you know, you completely forgot about it and a year has gone by.” Navratilova counts herself as lucky that her breast cancer diagnosis wasn’t worse; she’d gone for four years between mammograms. “I got vocal because I wanted to encourage women to take better care of themselves,” said Navratilova. She reminds women that it is an amazing feeling when they walk out with a clean bill of health. This month, she is involved with Chris Evert Charities, an organization that has raised 21.2 million towards the fight against drug abuse and child neglect in Florida. Along with TV personalities Gayle King, Rob Marciano, comedian Dennis Miller, actor Timothy Olyphant and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, Martina will be a participant in the 2014 Chris Evert/Raymond James Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic on Nov. 21-23 at the Boca Resort and Club and the Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center. She’s got the grace, strength, knowledge and assurance you would expect to have with a career like hers, but if you’re like me, you already knew that about Annie Lennox, who will turn 60 on December 25th. Now, with her sixth studio album Nostalgia, which came out last month, I got the chance to talk to this iconic singer. Here’s the thing….she just keeps getting better with time. This newest release Nostalgia is complied of some of your personal favor-
ite songs, so you’re singing some of the greats (“Georgia On My Mind,” “Summertime,” “You Belong to Me”) and it’s wonderful!
Oh, no. These aren’t my personal favorites. No, no. They are some of the greats, but not from my personal favorites. No? I thought I read that somewhere, or watched a video from some Grammys interview or something like that where you talked about your connection to these older songs.
Oh! That! Yes, I talked about the songs, you’re right, I did, but no, these weren’t my personal favorites from my youth or anything like that. I knew of these songs, but basically, I wanted to know more about them, which is how this came about. I wanted to learn a little about this era of music. So how did you go about selecting the songs for your album?
Actually, I Googled “1930’s Songs” and began to explore each of them. I watched some videos on YouTube. I read up a bit on them. I was in-

terested in going into that genre, but I’ve never done that before. Well, once I recorded “Every Time We Say Goodbye” as a track, but that was it, really. It’s an amazing genre, but in Scotland when I was growing up, we didn’t have these songs. I only got to see them on television or in movies, so I knew they were special. I went about the process by listening and really hearing the music. I hope this is correct. I read that you didn’t want to learn the sheet music. You wanted to learn just by listening? That’s an interesting approach to something you were tackling for the first time.
(laughs) Now that is right! Yeah, I wanted to get a sense of these songs just by listening. I didn’t want anyone to describe how they should be played. I wanted to go about it in a more intuitive way. That was really my way of going about it. Very simply, I just listened to a few versions of each. I didn’t listen to a lot of versions because I didn’t want to become too familiar or fall into a certain pattern. I wanted to approach it fresh. It’s about interpretation, really. I wrote the lyrics down and I got the general feel of the song. That’s the grand base right there. Once you have that, you can let it flow and truly do justice to it. It’s incredible to hear how you approached it. When I listened, I got the sense that these songs are a part of you because the emotion and intensity are amazing.
Oh, that’s wonderful. I’m glad you said that. Thank you. You know, I explain to people by saying, “It’s almost like when you meet a stranger and get to talking and it feels like you’ve known them your whole life.” Same thing with a song. Once you assimilate to it, it will flow from you. You can’t stand there and just sing the lyrics that you’re reading in front of you. Once you get a bit familiar, once you connect, it will flow. I think that’s what happened with these songs. When I was listening, I couldn’t help but think about the fact that yeah, I knew of these songs. I didn’t know them but I’m an Annie Lennox fan, so I’m going to know them now and that got me thinking of a whole generation of people that you’ll be exposing to these Gershwin, Billy Holiday and Duke Ellington songs for the first time. That’s pretty exciting.
Oh, wouldn’t that be fantastic? It would be absolutely wonderful to introduce these songs to
people who’ve never heard them before. It would be a lovely byproduct of the recording, indeed. I feel like it’s going to appeal to people like my mother, but I know that I listened to them for the first time, in a whole new way and now some of your younger fans will be doing the same thing. It’s great to think that it’s something that could see such a rebirth because of you.
Oh, thank you, that’s lovely of you to say. I do think it has the potential to be cross generational, I guess is the word. That’s the beauty of the interpretation of them. That’s really what you’re sharing in doing something that may be unfamiliar. It’s been four years since your last LP. How do you like to spend your time away from the studio and what inspires you to get back to work?
Well, I always seem to have a lot on my plate. I have many things going on all the time. For the last decade, I’ve been very much an activist. I’m always very involved in AIDS work, raising funds, making people aware and also with issues concerning women and children. That’s always been a very big concern of mine, so I get involved. It’s a way for me to stay active and busy in a positive way. There’s never a dull moment around here. I try to keep moving and creating and doing. I really try to live a life that’s rich in spirit. I love being creative. So, for me, I had an interest in something. I was ready to create so I got back into the studio and made Nostalgia with some truly amazing people. Has there been anything you’ve felt particularly connected to in your activism? It does become really personal, doesn’t it?
It is something very personal, you’re right about that. It has something to do with feeling complete for me. All of it is a connection. I think we get caught up in a world of celebrity, and for me, I need something more to make me feel like a proper human being. I need more than that to feel complete, so this feeds that for me because that celebrity part does become inductive. I have to do something more with it. It gives me a sense of value and makes me feel like I have something, a way where I can be more genuine, more real, more authentic. Just more human. You’ve been such a huge part of the music industry and through such major shifts, from actual vinyl albums and cassettes to CDs and now the age
of digital music. How do you feel about the direction the music business has taken over the past decade or two?
I think everybody that’s ever made music or is making music now is trying to figure that out! Where is it going? Is it sustainable? What is happening? How do I keep up? I mean, we’re trying to catch up, aren’t we? It’s so far from what it was. There’s the business of music and the creation of music, which are two separate things that do come together in a sense. For me, a creator of music, I have my relationship with music in its creation, so I enter into the arena of music as a business that way. It’s a whole different aspect. But, yeah, I think everyone is trying to figure it all out. It’s ever-changing, really. And now with social media, you’re so able to engage publicly with fans and media. Do you feel like that’s a big change?
I love it! I enjoy Facebook, I love interacting socially. I like having a different platform to interact. I love taking photos, posting them, getting to blog about them and see people’s responses instantly. It’s fun! With new talent and styles and sounds always evolving, have you ever turned on the TV or listened to the radio and been blown away by a new comer? Is there anyone you’d like to collaborate with in the future?
Mmm, no. Not at this point in time, to be honest. It’s maybe more of a generational thing for me at this time in my life. I don’t feel that pressure to have to know everything that’s going on, and who’s out there, who’s doing something new, which is quite fine for me. I don’t need to be at the cutting edge of what’s happening. I mean, there is such a huge deluge of music out there that it can be overwhelming. It’s great, but I’m not chasing it. You have that interest when you’re younger, but at my age, I have such different interests that it’s not at the forefront of my mind anymore. Will you be touring at all once it’s released?
Right now, I have no plans to tour, no. I do have some great musicians lined up and we’ll do some upcoming television spots. I’ll be doing interviews like this and talking up the album to anyone who’ll listen because I think it’s wonderful, but I don’t feel like it needs the support of a tour, you know? We’ll make the presence of Nostalgia known through the media. but I have no plans to go out on the road as of right now.

Gracefully Grayson by Ami Polonsky This brave and wonderful YA novel comes out in early November and it’s well worth the slight wait. Polonsky’s prose is well written and gorgeous: Middle Schooler Grayson has realized that “he” hiding a desperate secret: “he”is really a girl on the inside. Will Grayson be able to become who she is meant to be, even if it means facing scorn? Thanks to a caring teacher, Grayson might be able to break free of her shell. Excellent and a great addition to the fast growing genre of YA transgender literature.
She of the Mountains by Vivek Shraya Shraya’s masterpiece doesn’t officially hit stores until October 14; all the more reason why I felt so fortunate to read it early. Vivek Shraya was a finalist for Lambda Literary Award for God Loves Hair and his new work has the same lyricism and passion. This wonderful illustrated novel recasts Hindu mythology and spins a nontraditional love story between a human man and his physical body. “We are never our own,” he says. “That is why we are so lonely.” This slender little book will remind you that being alive in a body is a sensual dance.

scopes AQUARIUS JAN 21 - FEB 19 The recent past obsession with work, either overachieving or under-achieving, is coming to its conclusion. Other areas of your life will now demand change. While it’s been your choice, your rewards for your actions are being realized now. Take care with your finances and share your quality time with the significant others in your life.
leo July 23 - aug 22 The recent planetary restrictions on your finances will dissipate entirely by year’s end, so be ready to seize every opportunity to improve your current situation. Don’t be afraid to spend some of your money on making life improvements, as well as creating a secure base to build on. There may be opposition to your authority. Don’t get provoked into a power struggle. Disengage and just exercise self-control.
pisces feb 20 - mar 20 The planets are finally easing up on giving you hard life lessons. There will be a pop quiz or two to see if you have actually learned from past events and made the necessary adjustments. This is a good time to start making yourself available to any networking opportunities. .
virgo aug 23 - sept 23 Your analytical self is usually in charge of your decisions. You would be wise to listen to your gut and not just your head. They are also empowering your personal charisma, enabling you to attract new friends to help you. Be careful to stay balanced, as issues within close relationships resurface. When faced with aggression, answer quietly, but with authority, as the Universe may test your newfound self-control.
aries mar 21 - apr 20 The Universe is urging you to make some very necessary adjustments in your life. Aries is famous for being the ‘I’ of the Zodiac. However, it is way past time to stop assuming that everyone else is down with the plan. A revolt is already in the planning stages, so you’d better reach out to everyone involved to better understand what their needs are. Remember that conversation and compromise cancel conflict.
libra sept 24 - oct 23 Your focus is on improving the state of your home, family life and financial security. In order to accomplish this, your need for emotional security must be addressed by making necessary changes. Both personal and professional relationships will benefit from compromise. Choose self-control over trying to control. Spend money on long-term improvements to create the stable foundation you want.
taurus apr 21 - may 21 It’s all about your relationships needing the most attention and consideration. You can no longer avoid acknowledging the issues. These issues have roots deep within yourself, so use this energy to blast through obstacles to making the necessary changes. Use your stubbornness to stay on course. .
scorpio oct 24 - nov 22 The Universe has sent many hard lessons your way over the last few Years and now you’re being given your final exam to make sure you’ve learned your lessons. You’ve been willing to release past grievances and embrace forgiveness. Reach out to your own sphere of influence and actively seek to add to your fan club. Release strategies and people that aren’t working for you. Rethink what you want and why.
gemini may 22 - june 21 You may be in love with love, yet the hard, cold, truth about your finances may put a crimp in your plans to indulge yourself, especially if joint funds are involved. Failing to consider your significant other’s needs and cash flow will bring up past resentments. If you get bloodied in the battle, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Take a time-out and come back ready to compromise, if not apologize.
sagittarius nov 23 - dec 21 You’ve felt like a prisoner in your own life. Whether it’s been self-imposed or not, you are ready to break free of restrictive energy. However much you yearn for an escape, staging a riot won’t help. Instead, use this time for constructive planning and clearing away the old. Don’t get so over-whelmed once you’re free. Control your impulses and curb your spending.
cancer June 22 - july 22 The Universe is about to unleash all the emotional fears, worries and past traumas into your life, forcing you to take defensive action. You aren’t comfortable with confrontation, so you avoid it at all costs, scurrying away to hide in the safety of your shell. This is part of your problem. There is fun in your future once you get the hard conversations over with. .
capricorn dec 22 - jan 20 The Universe shines a spotlight on how your personal behavior effects what goes on in your life. You’ve been feeling like you’ve been going it alone for some time now, as friends and allies fall away. Find ways to use your power for good. You will be surprised at the results, as people will once again be willing to help you achieve your goals. Don’t allow fear or anger to cause self-doubt or bad behavior.
