A message from our Founder

Thank you for your interest in Sherborne. As we proceed into our fourth decade of trading, I am incredibly proud of everything that my fantastic team of staff has achieved over the years.

It seems a long, long time ago when I was honing my skills as an Installer. I decided in the early 1990’s to build a company which would always try to look after and be fair to everyone our business had dealings with, whether they were clients, staff or suppliers.

Looking back, truly believe that making that commitment has stood Sherborne in good stead and is the bedrock of all that we have achieved. There is no question that I have been extremely fortunate to have such a great team of people working with and supporting me along with my wife Claire and my brothers Andy and Tim.

Beyond my immediate family I like to think that all of the Sherborne team are like an extended family. Some of our staff started with us over 25 years ago and have worked their way through the business to Director positions. It fills me with great pride to see staff grow into brilliant team players. It is that ethos of helping staff develop that means we have been able to maintain the high levels of client satisfaction that set out to achieve.

I will continue to focus on promoting the same values that have endured for so long, looking after people, being fair and offering a great service along with offering first class and innovative products. This is what Sherborne is all about, and that mantra is at the core of our business and why we continue to succeed through challenging times.

I hope you enjoy your experience with Sherborne and once again thank you for contacting us.

From the first telephone call we had great service. It was great to have someone come to the house and go through all the options. Once that was done we made our decision on what we wanted we went to the showroom and confirmed the details. Next someone came to the house and took all the measurements and confirmed what we wanted. The fitters arrived and put everything in place and fitted the door and surround then gave everything a good clean. The office staff were also very helpful. Thank you.” - Mr

This company was a pleasure to deal with. Everything was dealt with promptly and efficiently. The men who installed the windows were polite and tidy. They even managed to save 3 of the old windows for me, with only minor damage. I’m delighted with the result and have received several compliments on how smart the house now looks. Highly recommended.” -

When it comes to choosing the most suitable windows for your property, there are many things to consider. We understand that being able to see different product styles and materials in person can help when making that decision.

At our Showrooms we have on display a wide range of windows and will be happy to discuss the features and benefits of each. Every window offers excellent levels of security and weathering properties to keep your home safe and warm.

Flush Casement Windows

Flush windows are a popular choice for many homeowners and closely replicate a traditional timber window in appearance. The window sashes sit flush with the outer frame, resulting in a contemporary window, making it perfect for replacing existing timber windows.

Thanks to their traditional appearance, flush casement windows are often used in period or heritage homes. However, this window style also makes a perfect addition to modern homes with its classic and understated appearance that adds minimalist style.

We offer flush windows in a choice of Timber, Aluminium or uPVC, in a wide range of colour options. Every window has multi-point locking and you can choose from a selection of handle designs and finishes to create your perfect window.

Stormproof Casement

Windows

Stormproof casement windows have been installed in homes throughout the UK for many years, where the opening sash features a ‘lip’ which stands proud of the frame, creating a picture frame effect.

This style of window was traditionally considered to provide better weather protection in areas of harsh wind and rain, which is where the name Stormproof will have derived from. These days, every window we install offers the same excellent weatherproofing to keep your home warm and dry, so you can decide which window you prefer by considering which design is the most suitable for your home.

17th Century Listed Granary

When James moved into the 17th Century Grade II Listed building in Wokingham in 2017, one of the home improvements he was planning to carry out was to replace the existing timber windows. The windows were single glazed and were draughty and having been in-situ for a long time without regular maintenance, they were rotten, letting in the wind and rain. The window on the landing was particularly in need of repair and let pools of water in, causing some flooding indoors.

The beautiful home, part of a farm estate featuring the original house, dairy and barn, was a former granary. James approached the local planning officers for approval to fit new timber windows. At first his request was turned down as local planning argued that, as it was a Listed building, the windows could not be changed.

James visited his local Timber Windows showroom in Hartley Wintney, run by Sherborne Windows, and discussed his dilemma. James said “The Sales and Design Consultants at the showroom were supportive. We spoke at length several times and they were able to guide me in terms of completing each of the steps required when consulting with the planning department.

James continued, The local planning department originally said that the windows couldn’t be changed as it was a listed building, but it was successful in the end on the basis that the granary would have never had windows to start with, so should not be affected by planning conditions”.

Once approval had been given, Sherborne Windows carried out a full survey and were able to recommend a timber window design which was both authentic and sympathetic to the style of the building. Rather than painting the windows, they were stained to bring out the natural grain in the wood. Leaded glass and

traditional black monkey tail furniture was chosen to complement the character of the house. The windows in the house itself were installed in two phases, with the outbuilding to follow in phase three.

James said “Since having new windows installed, we have noticed that we are able to control the temperature in the house in the Winter and can open the windows in the Summer to keep us cool. We no longer have any draughts coming in through the windows. We used to ask the window cleaner not to clean a number of the windows in our home as this caused water to leak in. Now though, we can clean all of the windows without having to worry about any water leaking in!”

Sash Windows

Our sash windows combine 21st-century technology with classic styling. Available in high-performance uPVC or timber, their vertically-sliding sashes allow for convenient ventilation of the home. Timber sliding sash windows are often seen in Victorian or Edwardian properties, evoking feelings of nostalgia with their unique charm. As well as being full of character, sliding sash windows are considered to offer excellent ventilation properties. When both the top and bottom sashes are opened, the air is drawn up and escapes through the top sash, whilst fresh air is drawn in through the bottom sash, resulting in a constant flow of air.

We install modern sliding sash windows made from a choice of timber or uPVC. The windows offer excellent thermal properties and high levels of security, combined with classic styling.

18 sherbornewindows.co.uk sherbornewindows.co.uk 19

Sash Windows

Sliding sash windows look fabulous in Victorian and Edwardian properties and they are often chosen for new-build properties to introduce a sense of character and charm. Designs can include decorative vertical or horizontal Georgian bars.

We offer a wide range of contemporary and traditional colours along with a choice of stylish fasteners, sash lifts and opening restrictors to complement the interior décor of your property.

20 sherbornewindows.co.uk sherbornewindows.co.uk 21

Tilt and Turn Windows

Tilt and turn windows operate in two ways. The tilt facility allows the window to tilt inwards. This provides high levels of ventilation by allowing the air to enter through a small opening at the top of the window. To open the window fully, the handle can be turned through 90°, making cleaning the outside of the windows easy to do, from inside the home.

Tilt turn windows are ideal for the first floor of a property, or for those living in high-rise buildings as they offer high levels of security whilst open in the tilt position.

Bay Windows

Bay windows are an arrangement of windows that sit together in either a square or polygonal shape. Protruding from the main wall of a property, they are an excellent way to flood homes with natural daylight. Our bay windows can be constructed from uPVC, timber or aluminium to complement the character of any home.

Bay windows usually have a large window at the front, with a smaller window at either side, forming an angular window with three flat sides. Bay windows originated in the 15th century and are still very popular now, adding character to the outside of a property.

We install bay windows in either uPVC, timber or aluminium, in a wide range of colours, to complement or contrast with the existing doors and windows in a home.

24 sherbornewindows.co.uk sherbornewindows.co.uk 25

Bay Windows

There are many benefits to installing or replacing a bay window. From the outside, a bay window adds a certain charm and curb appeal. Having glass on three sides allows plenty of sunlight and natural daylight to flood a room from all angles, often making a room feel warmer, brighter and more spacious.

Some homeowners design a bespoke seating area or storage area within the bay to make the most of the additional space.

Bifold Doors, Eversley

Once the architect plans had been finalised and planning permission granted, Mrs Norris started to look for a company who she could trust to supply and install the new doors and windows in her soon to be refurbished, 1970’s home in Eversley. Mrs Norris had heard from friends and neighbours, that Sherborne Windows had an excellent reputation locally, so she contacted the showroom in Farnborough and arranged for Tim Long to call at her home.

Mrs Norris commented: “Friends of ours recently had new windows fitted by Sherborne Windows and they were really happy with their professionalism. It is always helpful to receive recommendations.

She continued

“When Tim Long called at our home, he brought along samples and colour swatches for us to look through and then he took some measurements of where the bifold doors were going to be installed.”

At the rear of the property, there is now a fabulous swimming pool and paved terrace area which are accessed from rooms on the ground floor. Mrs Norris chose to have Aluminium Bifold Doors installed in each of the rooms, with a low threshold to allow ease of access between the home and patio.

The kitchen features a seven pane Bifold Door. All sashes slide in one direction when open, resulting in a fabulous seven metre opening. Even when the bifold doors are closed, the wide expanse of glazing allows plenty of natural light to flood the room.

There are five sets of Bifold Doors in total, each with an odd number of doors, providing symmetry when closed and a seamless transition from the house to the patio and swimming pool when open. Choosing Bifold Doors with an odd number of door sashes ensures that there is one master door with a Lever handle which can be opened without having to slide open every one of the bifold door sashes. Another benefit of having an odd number of door sashes is that when opened, all the sashes slide open in one direction and stack neatly to one side.

The windows on the first floor play a significant role in the overall design of the home and are all of a similar size, with two panes of glass. They perfectly complement the Velux windows positioned in the roof which feature vertical aluminium bars running down the centre. The entire property has been designed and built with the finest attention to detail.

Tim Long said: “After speaking with Mrs Norris, we reviewed the Architect Drawings and recommended Customade Aluminium Bifold Doors and Windows. Customade products are strong, secure and offer excellent thermal properties. Aluminium is a durable material which requires little maintenance to keep it looking good and performing well. All it will need is a wipe with a warm soapy cloth from time to time. The paint finish is powder-coated to provide a durable finish which will ensure the aluminium colour doesn’t fade in the sunlight.”

Mrs Norris said: “The Sherborne Windows installation team always arrived on time, and nothing was ever too much trouble. The After Sales Service has also been exceptional. I would definitely recommend Sherborne Windows.”

Modern Art Deco Extension

Suzie Tipple lives in a beautiful Victorian property full of traditional period features. When contemplating the design of a new fully glazed single-storey extension, it was important to Suzie that the new build was sympathetic to the design of the original building.

One of the specifications of the new build was to allow plenty of natural light into the new room, whilst allowing unhindered views of the garden and beyond. Suzie is an Interior Designer and having carried out research into the different glazing options available, she envisaged that Black Art Deco windows with their distinctive symmetry and geometric patterns would be ideal.

The bold, streamlined designs of Art Deco have made a come back in recent years and having originated in the 1920’s, they would perfectly complement the traditional aesthetics of her home, which was built around that time.

When it came to choosing which Art Deco system to install, Suzie’s Architect recommended the Aluco Steel Replica Elegance Range, with sleek, slim sightlines, one of the products offered by Sherborne Windows.

When undertaking refurbishments to our homes, finding the right company to work with is important as it can make a big difference to the overall experience. Having worked with Sherborne Windows on client’s projects, Suzie got in touch to discuss her requirements and arranged an appointment for a member of the Sherborne team to call at her home.

Suzie said “We looked at our plans together and discussed what had in mind. They were really helpful and made the whole process incredibly smooth

and enjoyable. As the new room is essentially a big glass box, the quality of the glass and frames was incredibly important to us. Sherborne also liaised with our Architect to discuss the specification of our new windows, which allowed me time to concentrate on other aspects of the build.

Suzie continued “When the windows were installed, there were a couple of small issues with the double glazed units and Sherborne Windows were brilliant and responded really quickly”.

The single-storey extension has added so much space and really opened up the home. The Art Deco windows stretch full height from the floor to the ceiling which fills the room with daylight.

The Aluco Steel Replica Elegance Range are fitted with argon filled double glazing and achieve excellent thermal performance to keep the home warm. They are also fitted with multi-point locking windows for security. Being made from Aluminium, they are strong, durable and will require very little maintenance to keep the windows looking good for a number of years.

The bespoke window design chosen by Suzie incorporates a number of perfectly symmetrical aluminium georgian bars at the top of each window, to create the impression of six individual pieces of glass at the head of each large pane.

Claire Long, Marketing Director at Sherborne Windows said “We pride ourselves on our Customer Service and the quality of our Installation. When customers get in touch, we take the time to find out what they have in mind and it is important to us that our customers choose products which will complement the character of their home”.

Planning permission for new windows and doors

Mr and Mrs Potter live in a beautiful period brick-built property in Hartley Wintney. As the property is of historical significance, planning permission is needed before any home improvements can be made.

The existing wooden windows are all single glazed. On the ground floor the windows have Georgian bars with chamfered detailing.

Mr and Mrs Potter decided they were ready to replace the existing wooden front door and single glazed wooden windows in their home with modern, thermally efficient double-glazed windows and doors.

They called into the Timber Windows Showroom in their local village of Hartley Wintney to look at the range of timber doors and windows on display and were impressed with the quality and high security features and felt they would be perfect for their home.

Do I need planning permission to replace my windows in a conservation area?

When a property is of historical significance, is a listed building or is in a conservation area, planning permission is needed before repairing or replacing windows. The local planning authority will give consideration to the style of the original window frames and shape and size of any Georgian bars and will require the replacement windows to closely replicate the originals.

Who can help with my planning application for new windows?

Based in the village of Hartley W intney, the team at Timber Windows is familiar with applying for planning permission for replacement wooden windows and doors, having helped guide many customers through every stage of the process until completion. They are happy to complete all necessary paperwork and liaise with the local planning authority.

On this occasion, after two years of negotiation, the quality and aesthetics of the windows and doors were considered worthy by the Council and planning permission was granted.

Chris Long, Managing Director at Timber Windows said “Many of our customers live in Listed Buildings, so we are familiar with the process of obtaining Planning Permission to replace the windows in their homes. We are always happy to help complete the paperwork and follow the planning process through to the end. We are delighted that planning permission was granted and that we have been able to carry out home improvements and install the new windows and doors to the specification originally chosen by Mr and Mrs Potter.”

Mrs Potter said “We are happy to have pursued the process of obtaining planning permission, despite the difficulty. The local planning department were very impressed with the quality and aesthetics of the new windows. Our new windows are amazing.”

Planning Permission in Conservation Areas

Every local authority in England has at least one conservation area defined as having ‘special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance’.

Over the past 30 years, having installed replacement doors and windows in homes throughout Surrey, Berkshire and Hampshire, we are aware that there are many properties located in conservation areas.

Before carrying out any significant work to your home, we would advise that you check with your local planning authority whether you will need listed building consent. We are happy to help you with this process and can put you in touch with local experts who can advise on the most up-to-date building regulations. We will be more than happy to help you complete the necessary paperwork and we will continue to remind you when deadlines are nearing and prompt you where necessary along the way.
