TOUR MORNINGS
September 2018
WELCOME TO SHERBORNE We are one of just a few full-boarding, all-boys schools in the UK and this, together with our strong partnership with Sherborne Girls, is what makes Sherborne special. Within this unique framework, Sherborne is an ideal location, giving the opportunity for all to develop in a secure environment whilst encouraging each boy to become self-reliant, confident and ready for the next stage of his education. Most boys join the School at age 13 in the Third Form (Year 9), but we also accept a smaller entry into the Lower Sixth (Year 12) at the start of A level courses. A small number of places are also sometimes available for Fourth Form (Year 10) entrants. Sherborne offers a broad range of Scholarships and Bursaries which are available at 13+ and 16+ entry. The Admissions Office is open throughout the year and will be pleased to help with all enquiries relating to applications, scholarships and bursaries. Please email admissions@sherborne.org or contact a member of the team on 01935 810403.

‘WE ASKED A PARENT WHY THEY CHOSE SHERBORNE. ‘ONCE WE’D SEEN SHERBORNE, WE DIDN’T LOOK ANYWHERE ELSE. BOYS HERE ARE DECENT, CONFIDENT ALL-ROUNDERS.’ TATLER SCHOOLS GUIDE 2017
ACADEMIC SUCCESS Academically, we support all our boys in realising their full intellectual potential with an emphasis upon exceptional value-added. We also offer an unrivalled co-curricular programme, balancing wide participation with elite performance, achieving national sporting success and recognition as one of the country’s top independent schools for music.
A level Results – August 2018 13% A* grades 43% A* to A grades 74% A* to B grades
GCSE Results – August 2018 33% A* and 9 & 8 56% at A* - A and 9, 8 & 7 95% A* - C and 9 – 4
The fact that every year more than half our A levels are graded A* or A, with a fifth of our boys in 2018 securing straight A* and A grades, demonstrates both the ability of our boys and Sherborne’s continued academic strength. It is also a reflection of the fact that boys at Sherborne achieve among the best value added scores in the country. As a consequence of these results, the vast majority of boys secured places at their first choice university with destinations including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Nottingham, Leeds, Imperial, LSE, Warwick, KCL, Bath, St Andrews, Edinburgh, Bristol, Exeter, Loughborough and Southampton. Their degree subjects range from Architecture to Zoology and Medicine to Music. At GCSE, the results are also excellent. In 2018, more than a fifth of our boys achieved straight A*- A and 9, 8 & 7s. A striking feature of the results was the number of grade 9s that the boys achieved. This new top grade is equivalent to the upper end of the old A* band and was awarded to only 4.3% of papers nationally. Among Sherborne’s reformed GCSE results, the grade 9 percentage was 13.8%. It is particularly remarkable that in Mathematics we scored 26.8% at grade 9 (compared to 3.6% in that subject nationally).

SCHOLARSHIPS Sherborne invites talented and enthusiastic boys to apply for up to two of the various scholarships and exhibitions that are available. We offer a range of these awards from academic and creative to musical and sporting. In return for demonstrating high levels of talent and commitment in their chosen discipline(s), award holders are given many opportunities to stretch themselves and develop their abilities through involvement in additional tutoring, coaching, lectures, societies and social activities. Owing to the nature of the commitment required of successful candidates, boys are not able to apply for both a music and a sports award. All other combinations of award are, however, permissible.
Scholarships and awards are available in the following areas: • Academic • Art • Drama • Design and Technology • Music • Sport An All-Rounder award may be given to a boy who falls short of an award in one specific area but who nonetheless demonstrates high levels of talent, ability and dedication based on his performance in the scholarship and award assessment, interview and the reference from his current school.

Assessment Days All boys registered for Third Form (Year 9) entry are tested in January of Year 7 at one of our Assessment Days. The boys sit online tests and will also have an interview with a senior member of our academic staff, a group task and complete a piece of creative writing. Boys’ performances in each of these are then considered along with a confidential reference from the boy’s current school. Following the Assessment Days the Headmaster will then make his offers of places for entry in September of Year 9.
Boarding Houses Each of our eight boarding Houses is home to around 70 boys from across all year groups. Day pupils are also allocated to a House, and have the chance to participate fully in its life. Families can, once registered, complete a House Preference Form indicating their first, second and third choice of House. This will be considered when placing boys in Houses, although no guarantee will be given that a boy will be assigned to a requested House. When allocating the Houses, the Director of Admissions, the Deputy Head (Pastoral) and the Housemasters take a number of things into account, such as interests and personalities, to make sure that the boys are placed in a House where they will feel comfortable.
