2018 Hardscapes Trends Forecast A

cross The Pond, Inc., and Huntsville Hardscapes, Inc., both anticipate 2018 to be another year of growth for the hardscapes industry in North Alabama. According to their intelligence reports, construction of single-family homes is expected to grow by almost 9% this year, presenting a great deal of opportunity for residential hardscapes. In addition, infrastructure growth will continue its upward trend and offer opportunity for commercial hardscapes. There is a continued movement towards hardscape designs that incorporate cleaner, more contemporary lines, versus natural shapes, specifically with newer homes. “Locally, we have seen a steady decline in the use of natural stone flooring and an increase in

the use of interlocking pavers and porcelain tile for outdoor living areas such as patios, pavilions and covered porches”, according to Trevor Cole of Across The Pond. Porcelain tile is an excellent choice for outdoor spaces in North Alabama. It is frost proof, requires zero maintenance, is non slip and comes in a vast array of colors, shapes, textures and sizes. Furthermore, it is easy to install. A landscape designers dream! Gravels and river rocks cohabit nicely into modern landscape design with clean rectilinear lines. Cole says, “Exterior design is changing. Homeowners are looking for low maintenance, easy living, simplified outdoor spaces. The design pendulum is swinging towards modern with

less ‘clutter’, a more minimalist look and feel. Cleaner, straighter lines with efficient use of space. Fewer plants and less grass to mow are frequent consumer design requests. Gravels and river rocks are becoming the mulch of choice. Typical wood and bark mulches need replacing or refreshing once or twice a year, where as gravels and river rocks require zero maintenance.” Neutral tones of gray and tan are expected to continue to be popular colors, as these tones offer a classic look that complements a wide array of home exterior shades, especially the neutral home exteriors favored in new construction. Outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, outdoor fire pits, in fact anything outdoors is hot! Why? Because North Alabama has a wonderful climate conducive to outdoor living. According to Cole, “People are ‘moving out’, moving outdoors with their living spaces. This is a trend we have seen

for a few years now, however there has been an acceleration in its popularity in 2017 and we anticipate this to continue into 2018 and beyond.”

EMERGING TRENDS There is a continued movement towards seamless indoor/outdoor transitions, presenting opportunities for designs incorporating porcelain, travertine and synthetics. The Millennial generation is also driving a trend towards “greener” outdoor living designs. Various aspects of this include the use of native plants, sustainable landscapes and edible gardens. Retaining wall products are ideal for raised beds near an outdoor kitchen, which would provide the homeowner with a place to grow herbs and vegetables, supporting the garden-to-grill lifestyle. serious damage to a North Alabama landscape. With good design and the incorporation of permeable paving, runoff can be easily controlled. “Permeable pavers are under utilized for the purpose of erosion control,” says Cole, “Environmentally speaking, erosion control and water collection is not given enough consideration in landscape design, locally.” In dry, low rainfall parts of the USA, permeable paving and water collection systems are mandatory. Xeriscape design are very popular in those low rainfall areas. Synthetic turf, also known as fake grass, have made some major advances in technology and appearance. Today’s “fake grass” looks real! Now, you can have a green lawn year round and never have to cut or water it and they are pet poop friendly. Maybe, the next big outdoor design trend, Doggy Doo Doo Outdoor Bathrooms?

Easy Tips to Create an Energy-Efficient Home Heating System

Air Conditioning

Clean or replace heater and air conditioner filters regularly. Keep outside vents free of leaves or debris that may clog vents.

Keep your cooling system well-tuned by a professional service person.

When the heat is on, set your thermostat at as low a level as you feel comfortable. You save for each degree you lower the average temperature of your home.

Close doors to seldom used rooms and turn off heat or air conditioning in these areas. Keep windows near your thermostat tightly closed; otherwise it will keep your furnace working after the rest of the house is heated to the desired temperature. If you have oil heat, have the firing rate checked periodically. Dust and vacuum radiator surfaces frequently. Dust and grime impede the flow of heat. Keep draperies and shades open in sunny windows; close them at night. For comfort in cooler indoor temperatures, use the best insulation of all — warm clothing. Use kitchen, bath, and other exhaust fans sparingly. These fans can blow away a house full of heated or cooled air in an hour.

Set your air conditioner thermostat as high as you still feel reasonably comfortable. Don’t set the thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. Your house will not cool any faster. If you have window air conditioners, turn them off when a room will be vacant for a few hours. You’ll use less energy cooling the room down later than if you had left the unit running. Use a fan in conjunction with your window air conditioner. Don’t place lamps or TV sets near your air-conditioning thermostat. Heat from these items is sensed by the thermostat and could cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary. Keep out daytime sun with blinds or shades. Dress appropriately for the warmer indoor temperatures. Open the windows and use a fan on warmer days.

Fireplace

Use large appliances in the early morning and late evening.

Keep your fireplace damper closed unless you have a fire going. An open damper can let as much as 8% of your heat go out the chimney. The warmth from a fire on the hearth generally doesn’t radiate through the house; the heat gain is confined to the room with the fireplace. In fact, a considerable amount of heated air from other parts of the house can go wastefully up the chimney when a fire is going.

Use cold water rather than hot when running the garbage disposal. Keep range top burners and reflectors clean so your stove operates at peak efficiency. When using an oven or an electric burner, turn it off a little while before the cooking is done. The oven or element will stay hot after you turn it off. When you have a choice, use the range top instead of the oven. Use your dishwasher and washing machine only with full loads. Scrape dishes before loading them into the dishwasher so you won’t have to rinse them. Let your dishes air dry. Don’t use the “rinse hold” on your dishwasher for just a few soiled dishes. Dry clothes in the sun (check your covenants, clotheslines are prohibited in some communities).

To lessen heat loss when you use your fireplace and the furnace is on, lower the thermostat setting to 50 or 55 degrees. Some warmed air will still be lost, but the furnace won’t have to use as much fuel to keep the rest of the house at its usual temperature. Close all doors and warm air ducts to the room with the fireplace, and open a window near the fireplace half an inch to an inch. Air needed by the fire will be provided through the open window, and the amount of heated air drawn from the rest of the house will be reduced.

Shopping for the Right Builder Your home is your castle. Don’t trust it to just anyone to build or remodel. Whether you are making minor repairs, adding an addition to your home, or building a new home, arm yourself with the information necessary to choose the right builder. Before hiring someone, thoroughly research your project and the builders you’re considering working with. Here are some tips to get you started:

Verify the builder’s name, address and phone number. Request references on similar work performed by the builder.

Numbers You Need To Know:

For customer references, find out: • If they are current references or really old ones; • If the references are for jobs similar to yours; • Are the projects similar in scope and price range to yours?

Check with the local Better Business Bureau to see if there is a history of complaints and with the local Builders Association.

Ask for proof of insurance; general liability and workman’s comp (when applicable).

Obtain 2 or 3 bids. When comparing estimates, be sure each is based upon the same set of plans, specifications, and scope of work.

Be sure you have a good rapport with the builder. Good communication is essential with your builder. You are entering into a long term relationship and you must feel comfortable asking questions of the builder and communicating your feelings.

Be sure you understand the contract and warranty. There are no stupid questions! Once you’ve selected your builder, let the person do his or her job! Stay informed and make timely decisions when requested. Pick a plan and stick with it. Changes cost money, and clients are often their own worst enemy during the job’s progress.

And finally, trust the relationship you’ve created. In the end, the goal is to be happy with the finished project.

hink about edible landscaping: You can have an attractive-looking yard or patio that also provides fruits and vegetables your family can eat. Oregon State University Extension Services defines edible landscaping as “the use of food-producing plants in the residential landscape.” It can combine fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, vegetables, herbs, edible flowers and ornamental plants into aesthetically pleasing designs. These designs can incorporate any garden style and can include just a few, or be completely comprised of edible plants. Some reasons to include edible plants in your home’s landscaping include: • Pick and eat fresh, fully-ripe fruits and vegetables • Control the amount of pesticides and herbicides used on your food • Save money by buying fewer fruits and vegetables at the grocery store • Grow unique foods that may not be available in the store • Save the hassle of mowing and maintaining your lawn Many edible species are not only functional from a food-on-your-table perspective,

Many families want to grow their own food, but are challenged by a lack of space for a fullsized garden in their yard. but they are also attractive. For example, some flowers, such as begonias, day lilies, carnations, pansies, peonies and roses can be eaten. They also make a colorful addition to salads or as a garnish on plates. Red and yellow tomato and pepper plants add a splash of color to ornamental beds. Additionally, raspberry or blackberry bushes make a great border around your yard, and fruit trees provide shade. Just make sure you consider where you are placing them, as cleaning rotten fruit or berries that have dropped onto your patio can be a frustrating and messy chore. The weight and mass of the concrete can reduce the amount of external noise entering the house by as much as two-thirds.

The cost of the basic components of concrete — cement, water, sand and aggregate — are more stable than the cost of framing lumber. While lumber prices can fluctuate wildly, concrete costs have remained steady in recent years, allowing for greater planning and financial forecasting.

We keep you informed promptly and provide opportunities for you to make a difference. We are your regulatory watchdog and political advocate. With an alliance of more than 1,000 local members, your membership is a one-stop networking shop. General membership meetings, membership directories, golf tournaments and other special events are just a few of the many ways for members to meet and build relationships with fellow professionals, potential customers and suppliers.

From educational seminars and workshops to council meetings and programs, the Home Builders offer its members many opportunities to stay current on topics related to the industry. Professional designation courses are available for members to further their education.

All Home Builders members have access to member-only information, including the Home Builders’ quarterly publication, The Cornerstone, the annual Membership Directory, and the monthly eNewsletter. These resources provide members with breaking news and current information. Consumers call the Home Builders office or view the Online Membership Directory daily looking for builders, remodelers, subcontractors and suppliers.
