From the President

Wendy Lee 2018 is here, and with that comes all things new. A New Year, new opportunities, and new officers for the Huntsville/Madison County Builders Association. It is an honor to follow the last Presidents we have had, and I am grateful for their leadership and dedication. Each and every one of you have brought a new approach to the office, and have made a unique impact. Thank you, Byrne, for passing the gavel. I also want to express my gratitude to the wonderful staff who work selflessly and passionately to make our association great. I am looking forward to working closely with each of you over the next year. There is a very good chance 2018 will go down in the record books as one of the most exciting, most rewarding and most pivotal years to date. On a personal level, careful and patient planning has led up to the opening of LeeHouse Homebuilding. LeeHouse is my dream, my passion. I will remember this season of life and the beginning of the rest of my life. In sitting down today to ponder the goals and objectives I have for my year as President of the Huntsville/ Madison County Builders Association, I have realized our Association is on the same starting line as LeeHouse, and the anticipation and preparation for my term has gone hand in hand with the creation of my home building business.

its membership by promoting the building industry and improving the quality of life in the communities it serves”. In 2018, I would like to see each of our individual members experience success and growth as a result of their participation in association programs and events. Spending time with other members has a positive impact on our business, opens doors to positive change, and exposes us to new ideas and relationships that expand our capabilities. Every member deserves to feel these benefits. I would also like to see that success lead to an outreach that grows our Association. There are hard-working, talented contributors to our industry that are not members, and I would like to create a spirit of outreach that makes a tangible difference in the success of our Association. Most importantly, I would like to begin a movement to educate our consumers. We, as an association, can work together to open eyes, open doors, and open hearts to a wealth of resources that can add exciting, different, and awesome elements to our lives’ work, building homes. I am honored to be moving into the office of President of this great Association, and I am determined to leave our next

President forward momentum toward being the best Homebuilders Association in the country. I am humbled to be in the company of so many successful and experienced industry leaders, and I am excited about the prospect of making any impact on the future leaders our Association is growing today. I am energized to get off to a great start with the first LeeHouse Homebuilding home going into Cobb’s Cove in Huntsville in the coming weeks, and plan to harness that energy to charge into 2018 with all of you! We all live to create and build, for someone else, something they will call home. The importance of that, and the collaboration that takes, are the reasons every single member is so valuable, and deserves the full benefit of an association with it’s eye on excellence. Let’s get busy! Lastly, I would like to thank our 2018 Annual Partners - Window World of Huntsville (Diamond Level), Durante Home Exteriors (Gold Level), and Redstone Federal Credit Union (Gold Level). We’re excited to work with each of you this year!

Wendy Lee 2018 HMCBA President

A New Prespective

I have served in some capacity within this great association for 14+ years. In that time, I have recognized that my perspective is very different than what I was hearing and encountering within our industry. Whether it be an education in marketing, a creative soul, or simply the fact that I am a woman, I am convinced something in me simply sees things differently. I want to bring that different perspective to everything we do as an Association in 2018. Our mission statement reads, we are “a professional trade association dedicated to supporting 8

The 1st hand winner will win $2,500 and the 2nd hand winner will win $1,000! It may be too late to play poker, but we have a NEW promotion for 2018 that will be just as fun! The promotion details will be released in the next Cornerstone issue.

The Huntsville/Madison County Builders Foundation Gala, which took place in November, included a reverse raffle for $10,000 and live and silent auctions. The event took place at the newly renovated Huntsville Botanical Garden Grand Hall and over 200 members and guests were in attendance.

The Gala is the Foundation’s central fundraising effort for scholarships to provide assistance to students pursuing a trade or degree related to the home building industry. Approximately $20,000 was raised to go towards scholarships. This is the most money the Foundation has raised yet!

Our sponsors, Home Choice Windows and Doors and Windsor Windows and Doors went above and beyond with their support to ensure all had a great night.

With this money raised, our Foundation will be able to provide even more opportunities than before to students which will equip

Governmental Affairs Elections

The 2018 election cycle for the State of Alabama is approaching quickly and as always, our Association and the State Association are active in vetting and supporting candidates that will be pro-growth, support education, and be a friend to the building industry. The quadrennium ends in 2018 so that means all 140 Alabama legislative seats in the Alabama State Legislature will be up for election.

He has served in that seat since 2014 and been a strong ally for us. The Association officially backed the Speaker of the House from House District 25, Mac McCutcheon. Last year was Speaker McCutchen’s first year to serve in that role, and he has held the District 25 seat since 2006. Under his leadership, we are confident that we will be able to have legislation important to our industry passed.

Our Association has endorsed several candidates already. This includes Sam Givhan for Senate District 7. Sam, a local attorney, has served as our Association Barrister for many years and is a longterm member of the Association.

We will continue to look at viable candidates running for legislative seats in Madison County and will make additional endorsements and contributions as the election nears.

Rex Reynolds, running for the House of Representatives, is another individual we have endorsed. Rex has a longstanding record of public service in the Huntsville community, including Chief of Police and City Administrator.

We have been dealing with an ongoing issue in the City of Huntsville regarding builders not being able to receive permits for townhomes due to a regulation being sent out by the Alabama State Architecture Board. The Architecture Board has implemented a regulation and sent a letter to the City Inspection Department stating that a townhome

We endorsed Ritchie Whorton for House of Representatives District 22 as well.

plan requires an architect stamp and an engineer stamp on the structural design in order to receive a permit, rather than the plans being drawn by a home designer or other type of professional that is not an architect. Previous legislation defines townhomes as single-family dwellings. Single-family residences do not require an architect stamp to be approved. We have worked diligently with local members, City of Huntsville inspection and legal departments, HBAA, and their attorney. An official complaint is being filed by one of our members that has encountered this problem. HBAA, with the assistance of their attorney, will take this complaint to the State Architecture Board. If denied, they will take the issue to circuit court in Montgomery. After careful consideration and discussions, HMCBA and HBAA agreed this was the route that gives us the highest chance to receive a favorable ruling. This will be a slow process, but we will be sure to keep our membership abreast of any major changes or new developments.

Phillip holds dual membership between our Association and the Greater Morgan County Builders Association. Through his involvement in Morgan County, he received the award of HBAA’s Don Nolan Builder of the Year for 2017. He has received numerous other state and national honors for his work. Speaking of awards, Kenneth Chandler received the 2017 HBAA Remodeler of the Year at Winter Convention. Congratulations Kenneth! You can read more about this on page 9. We recently held a Lunch & Learn on HBAA’s updated contracts and warranties. Matt Harrison, a local attorney, and Kory Bolding from HBAA were here to go through the documents. It was informative and well attended. Be on the lookout for information on the Remodeler Council’s Sporting Clay Shoot. It will take place Friday, May 18th at Limestone Sporting Clays & Hunting Reserve. We know this will be a great event to restore for the Association.

HMCBA’s Associate Council Hosts Staff Appreciation Lunch

In November, the Huntsville Madison County Builders Association’s Associate Council took over the office kitchen to host an Appreciation Lunch for the HMCBA staff. The Associate Council worked vigorously to prepare quite the feast. From grilled chicken and pork tenderloin to macaroni and cheese and broccoli salad to Key Lime pie and cookies, everything prepared was exceptionally delicious. The staff would like to thank the Associate Council for the wonderful food and fellowship. What a fun and relaxing way to end a busy work week! 8
