Splurge on the Guest Experience.
Resist the temptation to splurge on your dress or the flowers and skimp on the entertainment, food and/or bar. It is your day, but ultimately you want your guests to be talking about your wedding for months. During the planning process, put yourself in their shoes before you take money from one area to fund another.
Blend more expensive elements with cost-effective alternatives.
i.e. Don’t have enough money for that gorgeous overlay or linen? Utilize the overlay on half of the tables and introduce a coordinating runner on the remaining tables. Design your centerpieces that way, too. Your guests’ eyes will immediately see the pops where you splurged, and the alternative tables will coordinate nicely and make the design look intentional.
Think Beyond your Color Scheme.
When you go w ith a fullblown theme, yo u can incorporate un usual elements into yo ur décor allowing you to get more creative in your design. For example, with a garden or nature theme, utilize elements found in your backyard. Going for a vintage theme? Utilize your family’s antique s or scope out garage sale s and thrift stores to find gr eat vintage pieces from an tique lace to detailed cake pl ates.

A Guys Guide to Snagging the Perfect Diamond
Tips by: Mark Fandel,
Graduate Gemologist and Flora Gems representative
The Jeweler
It’s all about TRUST. Start with a local, established jeweler, who lives and works in your area. They will guide you through the 4 C’s of carat, cut, clarity, and color and help you understand how size, quality, and beauty affect price.
Utterly Unique
The Experience
You should feel comfortable, not out of place. Customer service, privacy, hospitality, and a professional sales staff are key. When your experience is enjoyable and relaxed, you will be able to make the right decision for you.
A Classic Beauty
The Style
If she hasn’t given you any hints, think about her personality, lifestyle, clothing and jewelry. With this info, you and your jeweler will find the perfect diamond.
The Price
A Vintage Vixen
This is different for everyone. The “two-month’s salary guideline” may not accommodate your budget. Value is most important. Spend more time considering how much you are getting for price. Take your time and ask questions.
The Statement
An engagement ring makes the ultimate statement. Whether it’s a vintage or contemporary style, make certain you buy a fine quality diamond that sparkles.
Where’s the Best Deal?
Estate Jewelry & Diamonds – they are hands down the best deal and value! If you have a bride who loves the vintage look or lots of detail and sparkle, this is the way to go. Because jewelers often take diamonds in trade or purchase them outright from people, it allows them to buy diamonds under regular wholesale prices and in return offer them to you under regular retail prices… sometimes way under! So you get a great quality ring at a fraction of the cost. Check your local, independent jeweler for their collection of estate jeweler and check often as they are always getting in new pieces.

Altars
Can’t find a unique alter backdrop to rent? Build one of your own! The bride and groom created this altar out of wooden frames and a great patterned fabric. Photo by Lindsay Tranell and Jessica Ewald via The Knot.
We love how the details on the aisle of “On Cloud 9” were executed by Jesi Haack’s team. It’s light-hearted, it’s romantic and it’s definitely unique. Photos by Jill Thomas Photography.
Want a great DIY vintage vibe for your altar? Cut up tons of strips of ribbons or fabric and tie across a line or structure. Mix and match pattens and textures. Don’t get stuck within your color scheme. Bring in different shades of your color scheme to help enrich the design. Photo by W. Scott Chester Photography via 100layercake.com
Curly willow is high impact and super affordable. Line the aisle to bring in an elegant touch of nature. Photo by East Hill Photography.
Want a whimsical wedding altar? Choose a funpatterned fabric to replace a plain aisle runner and fun elements to line the aisle. Jesi Haack’s team designed this wedding with pinwheels. Photo by Ashley Rose Photography.

Pearls of Wisdom Words of advice if local brides could do it all over again...
Studio 21 Photography
Ashley Birkey “Begin with the end in mind! Prioritize what is most important to you on your day and splurge on those areas. Also, I highly recommend creating a binder with individual pages and dividers to organize all the details of your wedding. I scrapbooked the outside with pictures of my husband and me and my new last name. Now, after the wedding, it serves as a memento from all the fun and memories that were made during the planning process.”
Sarah Jane Photography
Maggie Stewart “When discussing plans with your caterer or reception hall, make sure to ask them to pack up to-go boxes for you and your new spouse. You will be so busy enjoying the wedding, you won’t have much time to eat. At the end of the night, you may realize you’re starving. The to-go boxes are the perfect late night fix!”
Alida Duff Sullivan Photography
Shannon Richards
“At some point in the day take yourself out of the moment to reflect on what is really happening. I did this while we were getting ready and at our reception. It is the best feeling to see all your friends and family who are there to celebrate with and for you. It allows you to really appreciate all of the hard work that went into putting this day together.”
