MUSIC AUDIO FILM DRAMA

“ We are very of proud of Shetland Arts’ partnership with UHI Shetland and the courses we have developed together.

The courses are perfect for anyone looking to develop skills, progress to further study or simply to find out more about a subject that interests them. Previous students have included working professionals, school leavers, students taking a year out and people looking to develop their hobbies in a structured way.

The flexible nature of the courses mean students can study in ways which fit their needs. Students can study film to up to degree level and music to masters level while based in Shetland and this has proven to be ideal for students with work and family commitments.

Students are based in Mareel and have access to industry standard equipment and facilities including: a music venue, cinema screens, recording studio, production suites and teaching spaces.

The teaching team all work in the Creative Industries and bring a wealth of knowledge, insight and experience to the courses. Students have many opportunities to get involved with Shetland Arts’ events, festivals and projects.

UHI SHETLAND

UHI Shetland is the most northern partner of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). They offer a vast selection of courses, from national certificates to post graduate degrees. Courses can be studied at one of our vibrant campuses in Lerwick or Scalloway, in partnership with Shetland Arts here at Mareel or at one of Shetland’s rural Learning Centres.

SHETLAND ARTS + MAREEL

Film, music and drama students are based in Mareel with access to industry standard facilities including a cinema, recording studio and music venue. Students learn in a busy situational learning environment and dedicated teaching spaces.

The purpose of Shetland Arts is to place the arts at the heart of Shetland, to educate, promote, support and develop the practice and enjoyment of the arts by all.

SKILLS FOR WORK:

Sound Engineering Video Production

This course is designed to help develop practical and creative sound engineering and production skillsenabling students to use computer based Digital Audio Workstations to record live music and mix audio.

Students will use a variety of equipment and techniques to create multi-track recordings and stereo mixes to a professional standard. An element of live performance is included, although the ability to play an instrument or sing is not a requirement.

This course is designed to help you develop the knowledge required to plan, produce and evaluate a video production (e.g. music videos, short dramatic films and/or documentaries).

The course introduces students to a wide range of technical and creative skills in video development and production.

Students will also be building on transferrable skills such as research techniques, creative problem solving, group work, critical thinking and project evaluation.

SKILLS FOR WORK: Drama

Enterprise & Employability

This course is designed as an introduction to acting for camera and stage. It is a practical course that inspires students to develop basic skills and techniques involved in creating, producing and performing drama.

This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to build their skills within the arts and creative industries. Working with a variety of artists, event promoters and other industry professionals, students will get first-hand experience in organising their own events such as exhibitions, film screenings and concerts.

NC Creative Industries: Film

This course is designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of the working practices of the UK Creative Industries with a focus on film production.

Students will develop creative and technical skills relevant for employment within the Creative Industries, one of the fastest growing sectors of the UK economy, and for progression to further learning.

The course is based around a set of core Creative Industries modules with specialist modules in subjects including scriptwriting, camera work, lighting, directing and editing.

BA (Hons) Applied Music

Do you want to study music in your home region, in any genre or style, and prepare yourself for the music industry of the future? If so, then this BA (Hons) Applied Music course has been designed for you.

Studying traditional, Celtic, pop, jazz, classical or rock, this course will give you the opportunity to explore the culture of the Highlands and Islands and focus your study towards the application of music in a variety of professional contexts.

Addressing the modern needs of the professional musician, you will study with top individuals in their fields, and develop skills in business, finance, enterprise, networking and communication which willhelp you access opportunities nationally, in Europe and the USA.

This course is networked across the UHI - you learn through a combination of video conference lectures and tutorials, online study, and face-to-face residential sessions with tutors and students from all across Scotland and beyond.

BA (Hons) Contemporary Filmmaking in the Highlands and Islands

This new course is designed to allow you to produce creative films using the beautiful and diverse rural landscapes of Scotland.

The programme will give you the opportunity to collaborate with local communities, and arts and cultural industry experts to set up realistic industry links for your future career and employment.

You will study a mix of film-craft skills, editing and production, film studies, documentaries and cultural archiving and recording in an environment that promotes personal development and learning. You will also develop skills in small business planning and research while acquiring technical ability and hands-on, intensive experience.

This is a networked course delivered through a combination of video conference lectures and tutorials, online study, and face-to-face residential film shoots in locations around Scotland. Students will be based at either Mareel or North Highland College. Advanced entry to year two may be possible with a relevant HNC.

MA Music and the Environment

The MA Music and the Environment provides a foundation for musicians to develop new paths for creative, entrepreneurial and environmentally responsible endeavours. In addition, the course equips musicians to work within their own community, establishing effective and successful contributions to their local economy.

The course focuses on the three distinct but interrelated themes: music performance and creation; the cultural and historical context; and the creative economy and sustainability. Activities during the course encourage and demand the skills of observation, investigation, experimentation, reflection, creation, innovation and design.

This course is also networked across the UHI - you learn through a combination of video conference lectures and tutorials, online study, and face-to-face residential sessions with tutors and students from all across Scotland and beyond.

MODULE:

Film and Creative Practice MASTERS

Students produce a moving image artifact that compliments and develops their creative practice.

• Explore how film can be incorporated into creative practice

• Empower creative practitioners to promote their work through film

Film is a powerful medium in itself, but can be used to enhance, support and reflect other artforms and areas of creativity. Through the exploration and production of moving image, practitioners can add new dimensions and dynamism to their practice. Students will analyse film as both a form in itself, and a medium which can enhance the presentation of other disciplines.

Students can pursue their own areas of interest and may choose to investigate and produce a work containing elements of video for social media, demonstrations of creative processes, mixed media, showcasing artefacts, artist moving image.

MASTERS MODULE:

(Re)use of Archive Film

Produce a creative work inspired by archival moving images.

• Explore what archival moving images can be, where they can be found and how to access and use them as a material and source of inspiration for creative practice

• Empower creative practitioners to incorporate archive recordings into their own field of practice

Archival moving image material is a rich, inspiring and diverse resource for creative practitioners and collaborators.

Taking inspiration from a wide variety of works involving archival moving image material, students will explore different approaches to using archival film to experiment, remix, rework material to create new work and develop new insights.

Students can pursue their own areas of interest and may choose to investigate and produce a work containing elements of: new musical scores, live performance or installation and/or incorporation into new moving image works.

This module welcomes students from all areas of creative practice and will provide conceptual tools and processes to allow students to explore their own creativity, develop new skills in digital media production, and create new work to find their own voice.

MASTERS MODULE:

Sound and Music for Moving Image

MASTERS MODULE:

Music Recording and Production

This module provides students with an opportunity to carry out a music recording project from initial inspiration through to a distributed product and develop skills and expertise in the recording, digital manipulation and online dissemination of music.

Students will define a creative brief and production methodology for the piece to be recorded, and realise the creative brief through recording, editing, processing, mixing and distributing digital audio using industry-standard production techniques.

By means of an end of project presentation, students will critically reflect on the processes, the finished product and the learning achieved.

Creative Practitioner Upskilling

These free , self-paced e-learning courses are available on the Shetland Arts’ website. The content has been developed by Shetland Arts in partnership with a variety of Shetland based creative practitioners.

The courses are aimed at working professionals, students and anyone wishing to find out more about working in the Creative Industries.

Additionally, practitioners can enrol with UHI Shetland to gain certification at SCQF Level 6 via 8 weekly seminars, practical exercises and online assessments.
