Screenplay Film Festival, curated by Kathy Hubbard, Mark Kermode and Linda Ruth Williams. We’re delighted to be back, having had an enforced ‘year out’ due to Covid-19, and we’ve got some marvellous films for you to enjoy. Because of the constraints of the pandemic we’ve had to make some changes to this year’s festival format – Mark and Linda will be with us virtually, online guest interviews instead of visits in-person, and the addition of the auditorium as an extra screen, for example – but we still hope to create a festival atmosphere that rejoices in the art of cinema. You’ll see some of your favourite themes such as Look North, Family Friendly and Home Made, but we have also picked up on 2019’s Look South (this time looking south to Spain, India, the Southern states of the USA and Argentina). We’ve also introduced a new festival strand; Down on the Farm, four immersive documentaries that encourage us to think about food production, food security and the future of farming. Our guests come, albeit virtually, from far and wide – from Scotland, England, Spain, Iceland, India and Mexico. They include Tim Barrow (making his third appearance at Screenplay), Yrsa Roca Fannberg, Icíar Bollaín, Priya Ramasubban and our own Aidan Nicol (with her first feature documentary). We are also delighted to welcome Ben Sharrock online to Screenplay. The legend that is Guillermo del Toro, will be talking to Mark about his extraordinary career in a pre-recorded interview. Attending in person will be internationally renowned photographer Alistair Morrison, who has created a unique project born out of the pandemic.
The Covid-19 situation has presented artists with particular challenges over the last eighteen months, but we’re happy to say that our local film makers have overcome them to produce a wide range of work that is entertaining, enchanting, innovative and sometimes moving.
WELCOME
WELCOME to Shetland Arts’ fourteenth
If you’re thinking about attempting your first feature film, Tim Barrow will be holding an online workshop/discussion on how you might go about it. Screenplay will be operated under whatever restrictions pertain due to the ongoing pandemic. Staff will do whatever they can to make your experience a safe and enjoyable one. Likewise, the education programme and the community outreach programmes will take place later in the year as circumstances allow. Shetland Arts would like to thank the organisations and individuals who have contributed time, expertise, money and moral support to the festival. They literally make Screenplay happen, as do you, the audience. Cinema has taken a pounding for the past eighteen months and it is a joy to experience it on the big screen again. We hope you’ll join us for five days of celebrating some of the best that it has to offer. Kathy, Mark & Linda Screenplay programme curators

FILMS WITH GUESTS Riptide 2020 | UK | 100m | 130m inc Q&A | Drama | Dir: Tim Barrow Starring: Elspeth Turner, Tim Barrow & David Tudor Discharged from a psychiatric hospital, Jacob attempts to resume life in Edinburgh, control his schizophrenia, and be a worthy member of society. He works collecting litter from streets and parks. He boxes. He takes medication. He writes everything down. His Dad barely wants to know him. Frustrated by this banal existence and encouraged by his psychiatrist, Jacob travels to the Highlands in search of fulfilment. By the sea he encounters the charismatic Eva, who claims to be the secret daughter of Ingmar Bergman. And she’s on a mission. Director Tim Barrow is on a mission too. “The psychiatric condition of schizophrenia affects 1 in 100 of the population and is still misunderstood, misrepresented and stigmatized. Our film aims to tell its story with integrity, authenticity, hope, and humour. The cast and crew are indebted to people of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital for research,

advice and encouragement, especially Professor Stephen Lawrie, Head of Psychiatry at Edinburgh University.” Screening before Riptide will be Laurence’s Story, a short film made for Mind Your Head, about the importance of getting support for those suffering from mental health problems. FILMS WITH GUESTS Limbo 2021 | UK | 134m inc Q&A | Comedy drama | Dir: Ben Sharrock Starring: Amir El-Masry, Vikash Bhai, Sidse Babett Knudson, Ola Orebiyi Ben Sharrock’s critically adored deadpan comedy-drama Limbo is a wry, funny and poignant cross-cultural satire that subtly sews together the hardship and hope of the refugee experience, shining a light on the hearts and lives of those at the centre of a crisis that is mostly only experienced through the headlines. Set on a fictional remote Scottish island, Limbo tells the story of a group of new arrivals awaiting the results of their asylum claims. It centres on Omar (played by rising star Amir El-Masry), a young Syrian musician who, thousands of miles from home, finds himself trapped by guilt, regret and the grief that he carries for the loss of his former identity. Separated from his family and burdened by a plaster cast on his arm, Omar wanders the epic landscapes searching for answers to a complex past and daunting future. But while he is stuck there, he isn’t alone. In between brief

long-distance conversations with his parents and passing interactions with oddball locals, Omar and his new flatmates attend outrageously misjudged ‘cultural awareness’ classes, binge Friends boxsets, and debate attending the local open mic night, all the while waiting for the delivery of letters that will ultimately determine their future.

DOWN ON THE FARM
The Truffle Hunters 2021 | Italy/Greece/USA | 90m | Documentary | Subtitled | Dirs: Michael Dweck & Gregory Kershaw | Featuring: Piero Botto, Sergio Cauda & Maria Cicciù Deep in the forests of Piedmont, Italy, a handful of men, seventy or eighty years young, hunt for the rare and expensive white Alba truffle—which to date has resisted all of modern science’s efforts at cultivation. They’re guided by a secret culture and training passed down through generations, as well as by the noses of their cherished and expertly-trained dogs. They live a simpler, slower way of life, in harmony with their loyal animals and their picture-perfect land, seemingly straight out of a fairy tale. They’re untethered to cell phone screens or the Internet, opting instead to make their food and drink by hand and prioritizing in-person connections and community.
soon becomes clear, these ageing men may just hold something much more valuable than even this prized delicacy: the secret to a rich and meaningful life. And it’s Screenplay – so there are DOGS. Shetland Arts would like to thank Taste of Shetland, the Shetland Livestock Marketing Group, the COP26 Climate Fringe Fund and Stuart Hubbard for their support of this film.

DOWN ON THE FARM / LOOK NORTH
The Last Autumn 2019 | Iceland | 81m | 115m inc Q&A | Documentary | Subtitled Dir: Yrsa Roca Fannberg | Featuring: Ùlfar & Oddny More than a thousand autumns ago, humans arrived with their animals to a land pushed up against the Arctic Ocean. Autumns came and autumns went. Where the road ends, Úlfar, the last in a long line of farmers, lives with his wife. As autumn returns their grandchildren arrive from the city to attend the last herding of the flock. Next autumn farming will cease and all the sheep will be gone. The film was made in Árneshreppur, the smallest parish in Iceland. Director Yrsa Roca Fannberg has been helping the farmers to herd their sheep down the mountains each autumn and she sees them as her friends. In 2016, the year when The Last Autumn was shot, there were nine farms, and five children in the school and there was a small shop. Today the school and the shop has closed. With every year that passes, the population gets smaller as people leave. There are controversial plans to build a dam. While some say the dam could save the parish,
14
others warn of the irreversible damage to nature. Farming has always formed a cornerstone of life in Árneshreppur, but the younger generations are moving away, following other paths. For now, life is as it is lived, just before the transformation that seems to be around the corner. The edge is crumbling – will we in Shetland be the next edge? “A work of genius” - The Guardian
2021 | USA/Norway | 96m Documentary | Dir: Victor Kossakovsky Cinema in its purest form, Gunda chronicles the lives of a mother pig, a flock of chickens, and a herd of cows with masterful intimacy. Using luminous black and white cinematography and the farm’s ambient soundtrack, director Victor Kossakovsky invites the audience to slow down and experience life as his subjects do. In doing so Gunda takes us into the mystery of animal consciousness, and the role humanity plays in it. There is no voiceover, just the sounds of the farm and its inhabitants as they go about their daily lives. Writing in Sight & Sound film critic Ben Nicolson wrote “By placing us close to the pigs’ lives while resisting the temptation to narrativise, Gunda allows viewers space to observe, ruminate, and formulate their own position in response to what they are seeing and experiencing.” Watch out for the scenestealing one-legged hen …

LOOK NORTH Dive: Rituals in Water Iceland | 76m | Documentary | Subtitled | Dirs: Hanna Björk Valsdottir, Elin Hansdottir & Anna Run Tryggvadottir | Featuring: Snorri Magnusson
20
Three female directors explore the sensory world of newborns in this delightful depiction of an unconventional infant swim class.
The film’s gentle vibrational soundscape and lush underwater cinematography make it a meditative must-see.
For the past 25 years, swim instructor Snorri Magnusson has pushed the boundaries of what we believe tiny humans are capable of. His sundrenched circular pool in the snowy Icelandic mountains is a unique sanctuary, creating precious space for parents and their infants. Snorri’s gentle sense of play inspires fascination and delight, and the babies throw themselves into the crystalline water with abandon or balance aloft on his hands, squealing with glee. He works with the infants and their parents, using rhythmic vocalisations to encourage them to swim together. A trained teacher, Snorri astounds developmental psychologists with his ability to understand the early childhood psyche – “one, two, three, dive!”.
This is the festival director’s choice for Screenplay 2021. Kathy says “If you don’t come out of this film grinning, there is the splinter of an icicle where your heart ought to be.”

LOOK SOUTH Gay Chorus Deep South 2019 | USA | 103m | Documentary | Dir: David Charles Rodriguez Featuring: The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus & The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir In response to a wave of discriminatory anti-LGBTQ laws and the divisive USA 2016 election, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus embarks on a tour of the American Deep South. Led by Gay Chorus Conductor Dr. Tim Seelig and joined by The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir; the tour brings a message of music, love and acceptance to communities and individuals confronting intolerance. Over 300 singers travelled from Mississippi to Tennessee through the Carolinas and over the bridge in Selma. They performed in churches, community centres and concert halls in hopes of uniting people in a time of difference. The journey also challenges Tim and other Chorus members who fled the South to confront their own fears, pain and prejudices on a journey towards reconciliation. The conversations and connections that emerge offer a glimpse of a less divided America, where the things that divide us—faith, politics, sexual identity—are set aside by the soaring power of music, humanity and a little drag.

Launch! - On the Sea with Scotland’s Lifeboats 2020 | Scotland | 60m | Documentary/Archive | Directed & edited by Shona Thomson | Music by: John Ellis, Arun Ghosh, Jason Singh & Jenny Sturgeon Launch! dives into archive footage of RNLI crews, with an immersive soundtrack from some of the UK’s most exciting contemporary musicians. Directed by award-winning curator Shona Thomson (using rarely seen footage of RNLI crews past and present) Launch! takes in the length and breadth of Scotland’s coastal communities – including Aith and Lerwick. Immersive, inspiring and often moving footage takes the audience right into the experience of the crews and their supporters. A live debut performance at Celtic Connections 2020 saw Jason Singh, Jenny Sturgeon, Arun Ghosh and John Ellis perform the score live alongside the specially commissioned film. These world-class musicians then recorded the score during lockdown to accompany the cinema release of the film. It premiered at Mareel in June this year and this screening as a welcome opportunity
to watch it again – or to see it for the first time if you missed it then. This time we will be fortunate in having additional footage shot by Aith Lifeboat crew member Nick McCaffrey, with local fiddler and Lerwick Lifeboat member Maggie Adamson accompanying, along with guitarist Arthur Nicolson.
“It was an absolute privilege to host the premiere of Launch! at Mareel and to screen this brilliantly crafted, important and moving film to a Shetland audience. The RNLI is very much embedded in our community... and the film’s resonance with the audience was tangible.” - Jenny Leask, Mareel Cinema Programmer Sun

Confusing Shadow with Substance A film and sound installation made collaboratively by artists Jo Millett and Janette Kerr with sound recording and mixing by artist Rob Gawthrop. The 3 screen installation focuses on Shetland haaf fishing of the 18th & 19th Centuries, a unique yet elusive part of Shetland’s heritage. There were over one hundred fishing station sites around the coast of the Shetland and its islands. Once hives of activity, little is now left of the makeshift booths and bods where communities of fishermen and traders made temporary homes over the summer months. These are landscapes that now conceal more than they reveal. Confusing Shadow with Substance examines the interplay of past with present at Stenness, Northmavine, one of Shetland’s busiest former fishing stations, where hundreds of men worked and lived. The installation is concerned with the slippage between that which is gone, that which remains, and the drift between the two.
