OUR PROGRAMS AND SERVICES CORPS COMMUNITY CENTERS

Eight locations across the metro area offer worship services, emergency assistance, recreation, education, mentoring and cultural activities tailored to the unique needs of their communities.

CORRECTIONAL SERVICES

A unique prison ministry program addresses the spiritual and emotional needs of those who are incarcerated at state and federal facilities in the area. Children of inmates in the metro area are provided with Christmas presents and given the opportunity to attend summer camp.

EDUCATION

GED, ESL and life skills training classes are offered at several area Corps Community Centers, along with afterschool tutoring. Computer learning centers are open to the public with a wide range of classes including basic computer skills, job training and financial management.

EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE

Individuals in crisis may obtain food, clothing, prescription, utillity and rent or mortgage assistance at the Corps Community Centers and Red Shield Service Centers throughout the metro area.


EMERGENCY DISASTER SERVICES

24 hours a day, 7 days a week, staff and volunteers provide food, shelter and comfort to survivors of disaster and support police officers, firefighters and other first responders. Our mobile outreach program, Honk n’ Holler, provides food, clothing and other necessities to homeless individuals living on the streets.

EMERGENCY SHELTER FOR CHILDREN

Children ages birth to 17 who have been removed from the home due to abuse or neglect receive a continuum of care in a safe and loving environment. Respite care is also available for families in crisis.

FEEDING PROGRAMS

Emergency food assistance is provided through food pantries located at all Corps Community Centers and Red Shield Service Centers. A free daily hot lunch is served at the Bellefontaine Corps Community Center every week, Monday through Friday. Honk ‘n Holler, a mobile feeding program, distributes food, blankets and other assistance to homeless individuals living on the streets.

HISPANIC MINISTRIES

Spanish-speaking worship, programs and services including ESL classes, Hispanic men’s and women’s groups and kids clubs are offered at two metro Corps Community Centers. Translation services are provided for hospitals and courts.

HOMELESS SHELTERS

Facilities in Independence, Missouri and Olathe, Kansas provide emergency shelter for homeless families and individuals. Each program offers case management services and life skills education.

VETERAN’S SERVICES

The Salvation Army’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program provides a continuum of specialized housing services, case management, linkage to veteran benefits, temporary financial assistance and other supportive services in order to address housing stabilization for very low income veterans and their families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.


SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAMS The Adult Rehabilitation Center offers assistance to those battling drug or alcohol addictions. This structured residential program assists up to 130 men, with drug or alcohol addiction. Residents receive counseling, work therapy and life skills training that helps them return to community living.

SUPPORTIVE AND PERMANENT HOUSING

Long term permanent shelter is provided for homeless families in Kansas and Missouri. Services include shelter, comprehensive support services, intensive case management and after-care. Participants

increase economic self-sufficiency and reduce dependence on public assistance, improve parenting and independent living skills and secure and maintain permanent housing.

SEASONAL PROGRAMS

Holidays are made brighter for tens of thousands of people in the Kansas City area through Christmas assistance for families in need, community Thanksgiving and Christmas meals and special visits and gifts for homebound senior citizens. Utility and other weather related assistance help families stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer, while back-to-school supplies are provided to underprivileged


YOUTH PROGRAMS The Corps Community Centers in the metro area provide recreation, education, sports, mentoring, cultural and religious activities tailored to the unique needs of children and teens. Several sites also offer affordable day camps filled with activities to keep kids entertained all summer long. The Olathe Corps operates a low-cost early education center, Small Wonders Preschool, which provides an education that enhances social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual growth.

THRIFT STORES

The Salvation Army Thrift Stores are a familiar sight thoughout the community. These stores, operated by the Adult Rehabilitation Center, sell clothing, furniture and other goods at affordable prices and offer voucher assistance for those who qualify.

SENIOR PROGRAMS In addition to monthly programs for seniors at the Corps Community Centers, volunteers regularly visit shut-ins at home, in the hospital and in nursing homes,

sharing gifts and comfort to help ease loneliness and pain. Booth Manors in Kansas City, Kansas and Grandview, Missouri provide affordable housing for low-income seniors.

SUMMER CAMPS

For more then a century, The Salvation Army has offered low cost summer camping opportunities to underprivileged children in the metropolitan area. The program also includes special camps for families, seniors and children of prison inmates.
