Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

Unlike diagrams which, acts as the mediator between the physical constructs and concept to show the organisation of the object and therefore does not play a representational part for its dynamic object , signs and symbols do play that part in expressing, manifesting and referencing their dynamic object through representation.

Week One

Precedent Analysis isometric diagram plan view

west elevation

Image of Summerhouse Serpentine

north elevation

I find the isometric diagram the most helpful in organising the order of construction of model in rhino. It mainly helps to understand the overall form of the structure and the way it folds upwards or downwards, which is essential in proceeding to the next step of building it in rhino. As the first step, i utilise the plan view for tracing the curves of the structure using the curve tool. Next, i turn the pointson and manually move the points vertically in accordance to the west and north elevation. Once this is done, i extrude the curves for parts where this is allowed while in order to create the upwards fold as can be seen in the elevation, i copied the drawn curves and moved them vertically to the right distance and begin to move those points horizontally according to the plan. After all that, i use the Edge surface command to form the structure and applied offset surface to all to give it thickness. I constantly refer to the image, linking it with the plans and elevations as well, throughout the process to ensure my rhino model is formed correctly.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discuss how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

This pavillion embodies flexibility in use and function and increases its social impact on site, thus it is not extremely defined in this aspect. It’s not just a structural space used strictly for one particular function of sitting but it also serves an important social function. For example, the shadows provide shade for picnic, a place for kids to play, meeting space for people to talk, work and rest. In addition, anyone who uses the space will have a good engagement with the surrounding view of the lake and activities that occur in the park.

Week Two

Isometric

Isometric of the Summer House Serpentine Pavillion

My isometric of the pavillion is north west oriented. I’ve chosen this angle or view as it best shows the relationship between the curves and also more of the bench space as compared to the other ones. This model was mainly modelled using extrusion, curves and offset in rhino, with the flow and form of the curves modelled with more detail as thickness is not integral to the overall sturcture of the pavillion. I’ve learnt that circulation for this pavillion is not restricted to a specific flow but because of the openness of the structure it allows a fluid circulation flow throughout and around most of spaces. In terms of threshold, i’ve learn that it is influenced by shadows and enclosure of the space, which work together to create a separate quality of space, differentiating the area beyond the pavillion and under the pavillion.

Week Two Diagrams

Circulation

Threshold

This diagram shows the general circulation of the pavillion . The first layer illustrates the main circulation area where people usually come and go and the density and activites of the people who occupies the space, with most people sitting and some people standing away from the seats. The distance and number of the arrows depict the size of circulation compared to other parts of the pavilion.

This diagram shows shadows formed in the morning, afternoon and evening and clearly informs us which space is always in the shade. The shadow and enclosure of the walls and roof creates a space that is separate or different from the area beyond the pavilion, hence, the threshold. Also, the shade corresponds with the occupancy of the space.

Appendix

Process

1) Using the views as a guide, the curves were traced and then extruded. Offset surface is then applied for thickness

4) The bottom layers are complete and is quite simple, mostly relying on the curve, extrude and offset tool

2) To form the seat cushions, the cushion curves were traced out and then extruded.

5) To form the main top roof, the curves were traced from the top view. Then, with reference to the elevation, points were turned on and vertically moved to create the upwards and downwards curve.

7

3) The C-shaped wall was also traced with offset applied and then extruded

6) The layer is duplicated and placed at a specific distance below, according to the heights in the elevation. Lines were drawn to connect the edges

Appendix Process

7) Some parts didn’t need to be duplicated as their shape allows so, and could be simply extruded to form the solid curve

8) The other parts required the Edge surface tool, which selected the curves and lines to form the solid curve.

9) This is the completed solid curve, formed using the Edge Surface tool

10) OffsetSrf command is then applied to the solid curves to create thickness

11) This is the result of the OffsetSrf command

12) Next, the curves were traced for the second part of the roof

8

Appendix

Process

13) As with the other structures too, all the curves were extruded because it didn’t fold upwards or downwards

14) OffsetSrf is then applied

15) The solid curves now have thickness applied

16) OffsetSrf was applied to every solid curve. The second part of the roof is now formed

17) Using the plan as a guide, the layers were aligned on top of each other with the right orientation and distance between each layer

18) The pavillion model is now formed in Rhino
