Historically Newtown Town Hall was the building across the road. In modern politics, liberty is the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behaviour, or political views. In context, Newtown is historically regarded as a destination for cultural exchange, social activism and innovation. King Street began as a bullock route, a trail that ended at the Cooks River. In time, a toll was established to raise funds for road improvement, making travel costly for poor workers. A new trail was created, named Liberty Street, giving travellers and workers an option to pass through Newtown, free of charge. Drawing on the concept of LIBERTY and how that relates to the various cultures that are part of the fabric of Newtown’s rich history. INSPIRATION The Sovereign’s Orb is a symbol of Godly power. A cross above a globe represents ‘Christ’s dominion over the world’, as the Monarch is God’s representative on Earth. French ruler Marie Antoinette has the royal orb in the background of her portraits; interestingly so has Napoleon as symbol of his dominance. was inspired by Anish Kapoor’s ‘Tall Tree and the Eye’. I imagine these orbs percolating ideas creating change and revolution. Based on numerous primary interviews, and supported by secondary research, Rumble Interiors has chosen to locate AGENDA in the bustling, cosmopolitan and LGBTQI-friendly area of Redfern, bordering Surry Hills. The site chosen is 7 Baptist St, a heritage building, which was from 1907 the headquarters of the NSW Mounted Police. Here, AGENDA can serve a genuine need, and provide genuine delight, to a discerning, growing, currently under-served section of the aged care market. Pitt Street Entry & Speed Escalator

A series of patterning and colour combinations was explored using various arrangements of golden and bronze metallic finishes and scales of highlight features with the preferred option using the darker background colour of the existing cladding to emphasise the bronze highlights and to integrate the design with the existing concept for the right hand side volume that has already been leased.

By wrapping the pattern over the entry portal in an asymmetrical layout the actual location of the “doorway” off centre is celebrated. Leaving the area already leased almost pattern free also means the negotiations with the tenant to upgrade the whole facade will be easier.

The overall paint scheme for the Heritage facade has been softened and utilises more natural tones that emphasise the beauty of the sculpted ornament and the drama of the new entry.

The more muted tones of the heritage facade can be used as a backdrop for lighting effects to celebrate seasonal events and regular light shows. Targeted graphics can also be applied to the escalator risers to create a visual story board that relates to contemporaneous advertising and branding campaigns.

The arrival experience at the top of the escalator is currently quite busy and yet lacking in visual impact and anticipation.

By bringing up the entry cladding treatment to this landing and curving the geometry the emphasis is now on the pathway flow and the materiality and form draws you around the corner towards the mall doorway and the next escalator up to Babylon.

An alternative lighting projection treatment could be applied that would tie into a similar digital and visual celebration that could be applied to the escalator walls.
