Less than a minute before taking the winning kick, Tagliaferri got behind the defense and chased down a through-ball from Tara Walenczyk to give her a one-on-one chance on goal. Northern Highlands keeper Kayla Klatt, however, stonewalled her shot to momentarily keep the game scoreless.

Freshman Hannah Birdsall served a corner kick off two Glen Ridge defenders and into the net for the golden goal in the 93rd minute and the Blue Devils (21-4-1) pulled out a win over the Ridgers (17-6-1) for their first outright NJSIAA group championship. Shore had been to the previous three finals, but lost twice and shared the title with Ridge in 2013.
Freshman Frankie McDonough staked Shore to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute by burying a 25yard strike to the far right corner of the goal. The freshman, who finished the team-leader with 23 goals, took a pass from Birdsall, turned and hit a dipping shot that tucked into the back corner of the goal. McDonough later dribbled through the defense for another quality chance in the 36th minute,

Karlie Brogan headed home a goal in the 29th minute on Scaglione's service to break a scoreless deadlock. Olivia Kraebel flicked in a header 3:05 later on a corner kick from the same right corner by Scaglione to send the Indians to halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Holmdel senior Hannah Lee made a bid for her 22nd goal of the season in the 43rd minute, but her one-time volley from eight yards out hit the crossbar.
Kraebel nearly scored her second goal in the 50th minute, but her 10-yard strike drilled the bottom of the crossbar and came down in play.
Holmdel goalkeeper Mattie Milkowski saved five shots, but the Hornets could not overcome a 14-1 Ramapo advantage in shots.

Group III Final Mendham 4, Toms River South 0
Junior Jared Beneducci scored a goal in each half and the Minutemen (18-5-1) beat the Indians (21-4) to win their first Group III championship. Beneducci scored the first goal of the game in the 12th minute off an assist from senior Julian Montilus.
Montilus took the ball all the way to the endline on the right side and crossed it across the mouth of the goal. Beneducci made a run to the far post, got to the ball and struck an uncontested shot from the six-yard line past Toms River South goalkeeper Dom Pizzi. Senior Christian Pedercini made it 2-0 when he hammered in a shot off a rebound in the 17th minute. After Toms River South applied pressure to Mendham's back line for the final 20 minutes
of the first half and the first five of the second, the Minutemen countered and Montilus touched the ball past Pizzi and finished to an empty net in the 52nd. Beneducci capped the scoring in the 66th by heading in a corning kick by Pedercini.
The loss snapped Toms River South senior Cameron Geerinck's 12-game streak with at least one goal. The senior striker set a new singleseason school record with 28 goals for an Indians team that also set a school record with 21 wins.

Sansone Jr & SSN Continue Partnership
D
By Kevin Williams
uring this time of thanks, the Shore Sports Network would like to thank Sansone Jr.’s 66 Automall for their continued partnership to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving while also providing peace of mind when it comes the vehicles driven by teen drivers.
As the parents of three children Paul Sansone Jr. and his wife Chris know very well about the growing dangers associated with texting. That’s why they have enthusiastically supported messages to urge teen drivers from ignoring their phones will driving. “It’s really more of an awareness factor…that’s really more what the message is that we’re trying to send,” Sansone Jr. said. The couple have children ages 23, 21 and 16 and their strong feelings about the dangers of distracted driving first began when their older children attended Red Bank Catholic and it continues today. Paul himself admits that it’s a problem not just for young drivers but everyone behind the wheel. “As a parent it’s very scary, but I’ve even found myself saying stop, I don’t need to look at my phone right now (while driving).” While the awareness message might have started with their kids at RBC its spread to Sansone Jr.’s 66 Automall on Route 66 in Neptune and when given the opportunity they were happy to join forces with the Shore Sports Network through broadcast, web and print outlets.
“I think it’s a pretty prevalent problem and hopefully through awareness campaigns like this we can make an impact just like Mothers Against Drunk Driving and other groups have done with drinking and driving” Sansone Jr. said.
He added, “It’s a culture change. There are a boatload of kids using new technology, so we want to be focused on making sure they keep their eyes on the road.”
The joint campaign also features a component that resonates well with parents as the Sansone Jr. dealerships (Nissan-KiaUsed) know how important it is for parents to feel that the car their teenagers are driving is safe. That’s why Sansone Jr. will offer free safety inspections for teen’s vehicles no matter where they were purchased. Simply contact the service

here may be just two weeks remaining in the season, but there is still the potential for a lot of movement in the Shore Sports Network Top 10.
Nine Shore Conference teams in seven different sections will play for state championships on Saturday Dec. 5, including two all-Shore Conference matchups. Our weekly rankings place great emphasis on how a team is playing at the moment, but the final rankings look at a team’s entire body of work. Plenty of changes could be coming based on the championship results, as well as the handful of Thanksgiving Day games. The top three teams remain unchanged with sectional finalists and undefeated teams
Middletown South, St. John Vianney and Red Bank holding firm. Brick Memorial moves up one spot to No. 4, jumping Toms River North. The Mustangs, Mariners and Brick were involved in a triangle (Brick def. Brick Mem; TR North def. Brick; Brick Mem. def. TR North), but with Brick dropping out of the rankings after a loss to Jackson Memorial, Brick Memorial’s 52-20 head-to-head victory over the Mariners gives them the edge. Rumson holds at No. 6 while Shore moves up one spot to No. 7 as it continues its dominant quest for a second straight sectional title. Ocean falls one spot to No. 8 after a 21-14 loss to Red Bank in the Central Jersey Group III playoffs. Red Bank Catholic and Jackson Memorial round out the top 10.

with all but one being played on Thanksgiving Day. There are five games featuring teams ranked in the Shore Sports Network Top 10 and six games total featuring sectional finalists. The season is just about over, but there’s still so much to be decided.
Let’s take a look at the sectional championship games as well as highlight the top Thanksgiving games. All the sectional championships featuring Shore Conference teams will be played on Saturday Dec. 5 at multiple sites.
North Jersey Section 2, Group IV
2-Phillipsburg (9-1) vs. 1-Middletown South (10-0), 7 p.m. at MetLife Stadium
Phillipsburg is the defending champion and is seeking its eighth sectional title in its 13th appearance in a championship game. The Stateliners only loss is to undefeated BridgewaterRaritan, so they are once again a formidable squad. Junior Jaquan Jones and senior Manny Romero lead their run-heavy attack with 921 and 761 yards rushing, respectively. Romero is also a dangerous receiver with team-high 466 yards and six touchdowns. In the playoffs, the Stateliners defeated Woodbridge 35-20 and Colonia 28-13.
Phillipsburg will have its hands full, however, with Middletown South entering undefeated and as the No. 1 team in the state. The Eagles blasted West Windsor-Plainsboro North 55-0 in the first round before taking down rival Middletown North 41-14. Senior running back Cole Rogers
16
On the other side of the ball, Middletown South has one of the state’s best defenses led by an outstanding trio of linebackers. Senior Dylan Rogers along with juniors McCarthy and Kevin Higgins are sideline-to-sideline tackling machines who can also get to the quarterback. Couple that with an always solid defensive front and a secondary that has intercepted 17 passes this season and it’s easy to see why the Eagles are unbeaten. Mosquera is also one of the best kickers in the state, giving them an added weapon on special teams.
Jackson is the defending champion in the section, and although the Jaguars went through a rocky stretch where they lost three straight games and four of their final six heading into the playoffs, they have turned it around at the perfect time to earn the right to defend their title. The Jaguars took down second-seeded Brick 21-7 in the first round to avenge a regular-season loss before crushing Steinert 56-10 to reach the final.
Senior Kyle Johnson is now the starting quarterback for Jackson Memorial after taking over for injured junior Dan Barker a month ago. Barker is healthy now, but the Jaguars have found an identity down the stretch with Johnson. In running more of a zone-read rushing attack, Jackson has kept the ball in the hands of Johnson and junior running back Mike Gawlik on basically every play. The results have obviously been successful. Gawlik has rushed for 383 yards and four touchdowns in the playoffs, and Johnson had a big game with 162 total yards and two touchdowns in the win over Steinert. Gawlik has 1,352 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns this season for his second straight 1,000-yard season.
The Jaguars defense has also been stout in the playoffs. They yielded just seven points to Brick and kept Steinert under 150 yards of offense while forcing four turnovers. Senior defensive end Tyler Towns is one of the top pass rushers in the Shore Conference and currently has 17 sacks. Jackson will be playing for its fifth sectional title in its sixth appearance.
Middletown South has been to a sectional final five time since claiming its ninth overall title in 2006. The Eagles came up short against Jackson Memorial in last year’s sectional final, but will be the heavy favorite to win this time and finish undefeated.
Central Jersey Group IV
7-Jackson Memorial (7-4) vs. 1-Brick Memorial (9-2), 4 p.m. at Rutgers University
Class A South rivals Jackson Memorial and Brick Memorial will meet once more this season, and this time it’s for all the marbles.
Jackson Lib. RB Mike Gawlik
Brick Memorial entered as the top seed and won both games, as expected, to reach the final. The Mustangs defeated Jackson Liberty 38-6 in the first round and topped Allentown 28-7 in the semifinal. The Mustangs’ triple-option offense features a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in senior quarterback Tim Santiago and sophomore fullback Tony Thorpe. Santiago has 1,566 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns and Thorpe has 1,205 yards and 17 touchdowns. Senior Elie Lavarin 533 yards and five touchdowns.
Brick Memorial’s defense is led by its outstanding defensive line. Senior twins

Matawan, 24-13.
Mike and Anthony Nobile, along with senior Chris Hayes, routinely wreak havoc in the oppositions backfield are a huge reason why the Mustangs allow just 12.2 points per game. Mike Nobile leads the team in tackles with 77 and tackles for a loss with 15. Hayes has a team-high eight sacks. Senior linebacker Billy Walsh has had a strong season with 76 tackles and Santiago leads the team with four interceptions.
Brick Memorial also has one of the Shore’s top kickers in senior Matt Cuppari, who has converted 6 of 8 field goals with a long of 47.
This should be one of the best games of the day at Rutgers. The last and only time the two met in the championship game was in 2005 when Jackson won 30-28 on the final play of the game, a touchdown pass from current assistant coach Cory Lavin to fullback Joe Reggio with no time left. It is considered among the greatest championship games in Shore Conference history.
Central Jersey Group III
3-Red Bank (10-0) vs. 1-Rumson-Fair Haven (9-1), 7 p.m. at Rutgers University The Battle of Ridge Road has never meant more.
When local rivals Red Bank and Rumson meet to play for a sectional championship it will be the first time the two schools have squared off in a final. Rumson is trying to become the fifth Shore Conference team to win three sectional titles in a row, while Red Bank will play for its first state championship in 40 years and may have a chance to finish 120 for the first time.
Rumson entered the season coming off its second straight Central Jersey Group II title and were moved up to Group III this year. As the top seed, the Bulldogs defeated Rahway 43-6 in the first round before eliminating last year’s champion on the bracket,
Rumson QB Mike O’Connor
powerful A running game and a lights-out defense have fueled Rumson again this season. Junior quarterback Mike O’Connor has 868 yards rushing and eight touchdowns to go along with 516 yards passing and 10 touchdowns. Juniors Matt Vecchiarelli (695 yards, 7 TDs) and Bryan Hess (736 yards, 7 TDs) give Rumson a threepronged attack that has been nearly unstoppable.
R u m s o n ’s defense is led by junior linebacker Mike Ruane, one of the Shore’s best, who has 114 tackles and three sacks. The field general is senior Max Pfrang, who has 71 tackles and two sacks. Junior Mike Murdock has 81 tackles and two interceptions, Liam Adams has a team-best seven sacks and Mike Caruso leads the team with three interceptions. Red Bank is in the midst of one of its greatest seasons ever, and has two games left to finish off a historic year. The Bucs can lock up the Class B North division title, their first since 1977, with a win over Long Branch on Thanksgiving. Red Bank’s last state title was in 1975, an epic 46-44 win over Hightstown in what many still consider the greatest NJSIAA playoff game in history.
Red Bank WR Sadiq Palmer
Syracuse-bound senior wide receiver Sadiq Palmer has been a menace in the playoffs, and came up huge when it mattered most with all three touchdowns in a 21-14 win over Ocean in the semifinals. In the first round, the Bucs shut out South Plainfield 30-0.
SHORESPORTSNETWORK.COM
Raritan RB Derek Ernst
Palmer has 45 receptions for 635 yards and six touchdowns and has also run for multiple touchdowns. On defense he is second on the team with 55 tackles and has a team-best five interceptions. Senior quarterback Jack Navitsky has thrown for 1,075 yards and nine touchdowns and ran for 478 yards and five touchdowns. Senior running back Alim Godsey gives Red Bank plenty of balance with 852 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Red Bank’s defense has also been among the best in the Shore in allowing just nine points per game. Junior linebacker Chris Outterbridge has a team-high 80 tackles and senior defensive end Sean Naiman leads the way with 8.5 sacks. Along with Palmer, senior Matt Reardon is a ball-hawk in the secondary with three interceptions.
The Bucs also have one of the Shore Conference’s most reliable kickers in senior Jack O’Connor. He has made 31 of 32 extra points and is 9-for-10 on field goals with a long of 42.
Central Jersey Group II
6-Raritan (5-5) vs. 1-Lincoln (11-0), 7 p.m. at Kean University
On paper this looks like a David vs. Goliath matchup, but Raritan will surely have something to say about that.
The Rockets have made a cinderella run to the finals by knocking off third-seeded Point Boro 17-7 and crushing second-seeded Delaware Valley 42-13. Raritan started the season 3-0 before losing five straight heading into the playoffs. For the Rockets to complete their incredible

turnaround and win an unlikely second sectional title they will have to go through the No. 13 team in the state.
Central Jersey Group I
3-Palmyra (9-1) vs. 1-Shore (10-0), 4 p.m. at Kean University
Lincoln has soundly beaten every team on its schedule aside from Hudson Catholic, which it defeated 22-17. Quarterback Zymire Gordon is among the state’s passing leaders with 1,667 yards and 24 touchdowns. His favorite target is Frank Darby, who has 31 catches for 978 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Lions don’t play the greatest of schedules in the Hudson County Interscholastic League, but they are undefeated for a reason and will be the big favorite.
You won’t find any one of Shore’s players with overwhelming stats, simply because the Blue Devils have so many players to attack with. Senior Doug Goldsmith has 780 yards rushing and leads the team with over 100 tackles. Senior Jack Britton is a big-play threat at running back with over 800 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns on just 65 carries. Junior quarterback Matt Pennel is a playmaker with his legs and has connected with senior tight end Connor Rempel for three touchdowns.
Shore’s defense is ferocious and has recorded two straight shutouts in the playoffs. Goldsmith, Rempel, defensive linemen Steve Fiumefreddo and Erik Graham and Pennell and Britton in the secondary are all standout players. Shore’s defense is No. 1 in the Shore Conference allowing just five points per game. The Blue Devils have not allowed more than seven points in any game this season.
Raritan was able to shake off a string of five straight losses to get to its sixth sectional final, and will look to finish an incredible journey by pulling a huge upset. Senior running back Derek Ernst leads the way for the Rockets with 1,453 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. He had a huge game against Delaware Valley with 219 yards and three touchdowns. Junior quarterback Marc Carnivale is a 1,000yard passer with 11 touchdowns and has four veteran receivers in seniors Jahciere Jones, Nick Pasquin, Mason Sheehan and Jordan Smith. Pasquin has a team-leading 30 catches for 436 yards.
What makes the final interesting is that Shore hasn’t seen a team that throws the ball as much as Palmyra. Senior quarterback Max Smyth leads the state in passing with 2,655 yards and 26 touchdowns. Sophomore Elijah Karnjay has rushed for 896 yards and 13 touchdowns, as well. Smyth has two big-time receivers in senior Kelvin Harmon (58-981-11) and sophomore Taj Harris (43-95310).
Raritan’s only state title came in 2004 when the Rockets went 12-0 and won the Central Jersey Group II title.
Shore RB Jack Britton
18
If Middletown South is the biggest favorite in the finals as the No. 1 team in the state, Shore isn’t far behind as far as juggernauts go. The Blue Devils have been completely dominant in 2015 and will look to finish if off with the program’s second straight and seventh state title overall.
Palmyra defeated a pair of Shore Conference teams to reach the final, taking down Point Beach 34-16 before rallying to shock Keyport 35-34.
VOLUME-VII / ISSUE-21 / 11/23/15
St. John Vianney will be looking to bring home its first state title since 1980 and finish the season undefeated for the first time versus North Jersey power DePaul.
St. John Vianney’s offense is among the best in the state and is led by Boston College recruit Anthony Brown. The senior quarterback has thrown for over 1,800 yards and run for over 600 yards with 41 total touchdowns. The Lancers have a ton of playmakers with junior running back Chris Chukwuneke, senior running back Calvin Beaty, senior wide receiver/running back Khalil Haskins and senior wide outs Mike Stapert, Marcque Ellington and Jeff Sheard.
Stapert has nearly 800 receiving yards and over 10 touchdowns on just 30 receptions, while Chukwuneke is approaching 900 yards rushing with 13 touchdowns. The Lancers are averaging a conference-best 45 points per game.
TRN QB Mike Husni
South Jersey Group V
3-Williamstown (9-1) vs. 4-Toms River North (10-1), 6 p.m at Rowan University
Toms River North is one of the hottest teams in the state with nine straight wins and an offense that can score in a variety of ways. The Mariners will be going for their sixth sectional title, and are a perfect 5-for-5 in championship games.
The Lancers defense often gets overshadowed, but is fantastic as well. They have recorded five shutouts this season and allow an average of 7.8 points per game. Junior linebacker Tyler Tedeschi is the leading tackler and Beaty is a bone-crushing tackler at linebacker. Junior lineman Micah Clark is an FBS talent and most of the receiving corps doubles as defensive backs to give the defense loads of speed and athleticism.
DePaul may be 5-6 and the No. 7 seed, but they are as dangerous as any team St. John Vianney has faced this year. The Spartans lost out-of-state games to Good Counsel (Md.),
Defensively, DePaul has senior Scott LaVelle (122) and sophomore Vinny DePalma (109) over 100 tackles. Senior Mike Dwumfour has a whopping 20 tackles for loss and seven sacks, and senior Quayshon Alexander is a Nebraska recruit as a standout defensive lineman.
Thanksgiving Day Games to Feast On Long Branch at Red Bank, 10 a.m.:
Red Bank can clinch the Class B North title with a win, its first division title since 1977.
Middletown North at Middletown South, 10:30 a.m.: The second straight game between the two
teams, Middletown South clinches the Class A North title with a win. The Eagles have not won a division title since 2009. Old rivals Shore and Rumson continue their freshly-formed Thanksgiving Day game, and it once again features two state finalists. Last year both teams won state titles, but Shore won on Turkey Day, 13-0.
Manasquan at Wall, 11 a.m.: Always a great game
and atmosphere no matter the teams’ records, Wall and Manasquan will tangle in one of New Jersey’s best Thanksgiving Day games. It’s also our Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week
Toms River North’s tremendous offense features dynamic junior quarterback Mike Husni, who has combined for 2,401 yards and 30 touchdowns. He has thrown for 1,259 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 1,142 yards and 17 touchdowns for his second straight season of 1,000 yards rushing and passing. Senior tailback Asante Moorer is a punishing runner and has 1,437 yards and 16 touchdowns. Junior Darrion Carrington leads the receiving corps with 624 yards and five touchdowns on 31 catches, and junior Bryce Watts is also a dangerous option in the passing game.
The Mariners’ defense features one of the best players in the Shore, defensive lineman Da'shon Copes. He leads the team in tackles, tackles for loss and sacks. Junior linebacker Pete Laquaglia is approaching 100 tackles to go along with three sacks.
7-DePaul (5-6) vs. 1-St. John Vianney (11-0), 10 a.m. at Rutgers University
DePaul features the No. 1 running back recruit in the country, Kareem Walker. The former Ohio State commit who recently rescinded his verbal commitment has rushed for 1,314 yards and scored 11 touchdowns this season. Senior quarterback Shelton Applewhite has thrown for 1,197 yards and 14 touchdowns and senior Hasise Dubois leads the team with 44 catches for 724 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Shore at Rumson-Fair Haven, 11 a.m.:
Williamstown has been in just one sectional final in its history, a 43-20 win over Southern to win the 2012 title and finish 12-0. The Braves have won 50 games over the past six seasons, so they have become a consistent threat in what is routinely considered the toughest public school bracket in the state.
Non-Public Group III
Canisius (NY) and Elder (OH), and also dropped games to St. Joseph (Montvale), Bergen Catholic and Don Bosco Prep. In the playoffs they have rolled over Camden Catholic (40-13) and Delbarton (34-7).

Week-10
11/13/15
Jackson Memorial junior running back
Mike Gawlik
The Week 10 recipient is Jackson Memorial junior running back Mike Gawlik, who carried the offensive load for the Jaguars in their 21-7 victory over Brick in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV playoffs. Gawlik ran for 215 yards and two touchdowns on a whopping 36 carries – while also playing a standout role on defense – to help the seventh-seeded and defending-champion Jaguars knock off the No. 2 Dragons. The win put the Jaguars (6-4) into the sectional semifinals against Steinert, and also exacted revenge for a 2-0 regular-season loss to Brick. Gawlik went over 1,000 yards rushing on the season in the game for his second straight 1,000-yard campaign, and enters the semifinals with 1,187 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns.
The fans made a late push in voting for Gawlik, as he came from the middle of the pack to win the award with 45.9 percent of the vote. He beat out Raritan linebacker Ryan Dickens, who made 15 tackles with three for a loss in the Rockets’ 17-7 win over Point Boro in the Central Jersey Group II playoffs.
