Mike Husni, Parker Day Lead Unstoppable Toms River North Offense Past Howell to Reach South Jersey Group V Final

By Bob Badders – Senior Managing Editor

A

yard pass to Carrington put the ball at the Howell 25-yard line, and an 11-yard run by Day moved it to the 15-yard line. Day’s five-yard touchdown run gave the Mariners a 20-point lead.

w e ek a ft er a l a c k l u s t er s h o w in g a n d a n escape from a near upset, Toms River N o r t h ’ s r ec o r d - s et t i n g o f f en s e r e t u r n e d t o form, and with it the Mariners are heading back to an NJSIAA state final.

Toms River North’s offensive line was dominant in paving the way for 385 yards on an average of 11.3 yards per carry. The Mariners entered averaging 300 yards on the ground and have two players over 1,400 yards rushing. “They played fantastic today, probably the bet they’ve played all season,” Husni said. “They’re as good an offensive line as there is in the Shore Conference, and in my opinion they’re the best,” Oizerowitz said. “They give us the confidence to run the ball whenever we want to.”

Senior quarterback Mike Husni was brilliant yet again with 387 total yards and five touchdowns while senior running back Parker Day ran for 200 yards and four touchdowns as the top-seeded and undefeated Mariners overwhelmed fifth-seeded Howell, 62-34, in the semifinals of the South Jersey Group V tournament on Friday night at Gernard Field.

Howell refused to go quietly and closed to 41-27 on Gandy’s three-yard run, but Toms River North had enough of a cushion and would score on its final three possessions.

The Mariners (11-0) ran for 385 yards behind a dominant performance by their offensive line and posted a ridiculous 592 yards of total offense to match their season high in points. Husni was 9-of-10 for 207 yards passing and three touchdowns while also rushing for 180 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Senior wide receiver Darrion Carrington added five catches for 134 yards and a touchdown and senior wide out Bryce Watts had three receptions for 70 yards and two touchdowns.

Day scored his third touchdown to make it 48-27 early in the fourth quarter and Husni connected with Watts on a crossing route for a 30-yard touchdown and a 55-27 advantage. Day’s 30-yard touchdown run, his fourth of the game, made it 62-27.

“The media was questioning us because of the (Atlantic City) game (27-20 win) and that put a bigger chip on our shoulder,” Husni said. “And we knew we had to come out and perform if we wanted to beat a good Howell team that has been on a pretty nice run. We came together as a team.”

The statistics are off the charts for Toms River North through 11 games. The Mariners are averaging 46.9 points per game and have scored at least 40 points in 10 of those games. Husni now has 1,977 yards passing and 25 touchdowns and 1,540 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns. His 43 touchdowns are one away from tying the Shore Conference single-season record of 44 set by Mater Dei Prep’s Christian Palmer in 2014. Day has 1,410 yards rushing and 23 touchdowns, while Carrington and Watts are arguably the best wide receiver tandem in New Jersey. Carrington has 34 receptions for 909 yards and 15 touchdowns and Watts has 30 catches for 765 yards and 10 touchdowns. There’s even gaudy statistics on the defensive side with senior linebacker Pete LaQuaglia having amassed over 150 tackles.

Howell put in some backup seniors late in the game and were able to get Joe Curto in the end zone on a seven-yard run with under a minute to play to provide the final scoring margin.

Sr. QB Mike Husni

“The way we practiced was the difference,” said Toms River North head coach Dave Oizerowitz. “Last week we weren’t sharp and our execution was off. We needed a sense of urgency and this week we had it. We executed as well as we have all year.” Toms River North has now won 21 games in a row and will try to become the first Mariners team to win back-to-back state titles when they take on third-seeded Millville in the championship game, scheduled for Saturday Dec. 3 at Rowan University. Millville topped second-seeded Rancocas Valley, 32-15, in the other semifinal. Howell had its resurgent season under third-year head coach Luke Sinkhorn come to an end, but went down swinging with a high-scoring offense of its own. Junior quarterback Eddie Morales was sensational in defeat with 214 yards passing and a touchdown and 147 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Junior wide out Naz Brantley caught seven passes for 79 yards, Ryan Mazik had a touchdown grab and seniors Mekai Gandy and Joe Curto had touchdown runs as the Rebels finished 6-5. Toms River North’s offense was once again unstoppable in averaging 13.7 yards per play and scoring on nine of 11 drives. A penalty forced a punt on one drive, and the first half clock ran out on the other. Howell hung around until the fourth quarter when the Mariners scored 21 points and opened a 35-point lead before Howell scored a late touchdown against the a mostly second-string defense. Twice the Rebels were able to cut Toms River North’s lead to seven points, but each time the Mariners demoralized them with touchdowns on the very next offensive play to make sure the momentum never left the home sideline. “We just go drive-by-drive and try to score every possession,” Husni said. “We know sometimes a defense will hold us or there will be penalties or turnovers, but today was almost the perfect game. Hopefully in two weeks at Rowan we’ll get that perfect game.” “It was a nice day out and coach opened the playbook,” Carrington said. “We all had some, and when that happens we’re hard to stop.”

Howell took the opportunity and went 83 yards in 10 plays to close to within 27-14. A 17yard run by Morales coupled with a personal foul against Toms River North put the ball at midfield, and Morales made two great plays to convert after a penalty put the Rebels in secondand-29. Brantley had a 23-yard catch-and-run and then an eight-yard catch to put Howell at the Toms River North 39. Morales scrambled for a first down on third-and-seven, then ripped off a 25-yard run down to the 3-yard line. Two plays later he powered in from the 1-yard line to make it a 13-point game heading to halftime. Getting the ball to begin the second half gave Howell another opportunity to make it a onescore game, and the Rebels did just that with a seven-play, 62-yard drive to make it a 27-21 game. A great 43-yard catch by senior wide out Dan Cacciatore set up Mazik’s seven-yard touchdown reception. Toms River North returned the squib kick to midfield, and needed just one play to get back into the end zone as Husni ran a quarterback power play to the left side and scored on a 50yard run to put the Mariners up 34-21. He screamed, ‘THEY CAN’T STOP US!’ as he ran back to the sideline. He was right.

The Mariners know none of that will matter if they don’t finish the job against Millville in two weeks. Immortality is at their doorstep, and they’re ready to cement their legacy as an all-time great program in the Shore Conference. “We have one more game for our seniors and this is everything we wanted, to play 12 games and finish off our careers (with another state title),” Husni said. “We’re going to go down to Rowan in two weeks and play Mariners football.” “Since the day after states last year coach said we have to get back,” Carrington said. “The week after we were lifting and getting work in. This is what we dreamt of, and we’re back.”

“I think he’s one of the greatest high school football players the Shore Conference has ever seen,” Oizerowitz said. “He can spin it and he can run it as well as anyone who’s ever laced ‘em up.”

It began with a five-play, 65-yard scoring drive to open the game for Toms River North. A 22yard run by Day moved the ball into Howell territory and Husni found Watts for a 33-yard touchdown on third down for a 7-0 lead. After Howell went three-and-out, Toms River North needed just four plays to add to its lead. Husni hit Watts for seven yards then ran for a first down with a four-yard gain, Day gained 14 yards on a run and Husni broke free on a 36-yard touchdown run to put the Mariners up 14-0 just 5:09 into the game. Howell came right back with an 11-play, 76-yard drive to get on the board and prevent Toms River North from making it an early rout. Running back Nick Chambers took a swing pass 24 yards into Toms River North territory, then converted a fourth-and-2 by recovering his own fumble and gain just enough to move the chains at the Mariners’ 33-yard line. Morales connected with Brantley for 16 yards down to the 2-yard line before punching it in himself on a quarterback sneak to make it 14-7 with 1:46 left in the first quarter. Toms River North’s answer was immediate, as Husni hit Carrington in stride for a 69-yard touchdown. The extra point was no good, but the Mariners were back up by two scores at 20-7. “We didn’t plan it that way and say we had to score on the next play, but that’s the best way to do it,” Carrington said. “Coach made a good call and we executed it.” A sack by senior nose guard Joe Nardoza on third down forced Howell to punt, and the Mariners cashed in on another drive to take a 27-7 lead. Five straight runs covered 60 yards with Day polishing off the march with a 35-yard touchdown run where he broke free from a pile of players. Howell took over near midfield on its next possession and used the good field position to get to the Toms River North 36, but came up short on fourth-and-three to turn the ball over on downs. Toms River North moved into Howell territory quickly, but a holding penalty on third down squashed a scoring chance and forced a rare Mariners punt.

he P layer of the Wee k for Week 10 was such an obvious choice that we didn’t even bot her having a vote. Freehold junior q uarterback Ashante Worthy went nuclear i n Freehold’s 69-56 NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV playoff win over Pennsauken to produce the greatest individual statistical performance in Shore Conference history. He rushe d for a Shore Confe re nce-record 465 yards and 8 touchdowns while throwing for 71 yards and 2 touchdowns to post a mind-boggling 536 yards of total offense and 10 touchdowns. Worthy scored on runs of 10, 14, 1, 53, 15, 30, 24 and 53 yards while throwing a 14-yard touchdown to Ahlonte Hair and a 46-yard touchdown to Markee Gill. Worthy had seven touchdowns in the first half, including four in the first quarter, when Freehold grabbed a 49-32 halftime lead. Worthy also set the state record for rushing yards in a game by a quarterback, surpassing the mark of 405 set by Old Tappan’s Devin Fuller (now on the Atlanta Falcons) in a 2010 game vs. Paramus. The 125 combined points put up by Freehold and Pennsauken made it the highest scoring playoff game in NJSIAA history, surpassing the 119 points set by Old Tappan and Paramus in 2010. Worthy now has 1,881 yards rushing and 28 touchdowns plus 732 yards passing and eight touchdowns this season. He also has a kick return touchdown and an

4

interception return for a touchdown to put him six touchdowns shy of tying the Shore Conference single-season record of 44 set by Mater Dei quarterback Christian Palmer in 2014. The fans did get to vote on what they thought was Worthy’s most impressive statistical performance, and the choice was his 10 total touchdowns. Worthy and Freehold will try to keep their season going when they face top-seeded Brick in the semifinals of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV playoffs on Nov 18th. Week-9

Late Heroics Send Keyport to First Sectional Final Since 2003 By Vin Ebenau - Shore Sports Network Contributor

W

What looked to be a defensive showdown heading into the half with a 7-0 Keyport lead, became a backand-forth third quarter before the Red Raiders went up for good and defeated Point Beach 27-14 in the Central Jersey Group I semifinals, which locks up a rematch with Asbury Park in two weeks. A defensive showdown is what you would expect between these two teams heading in, but it wouldn’t be a playoff game without a little late game excitement right? For the most part, both teams held the ball for a while in the first half on drives that only resulted in seven points for Keyport, whose defense held up the strongest throughout the game.

This is where the third quarter came to a close with Point Beach in possession of the football and hoping to once again tie the score in a back-and-forth second half. Point Beach had another long drive but ended with a turnover by senior running back Sean Gould who fumbled the ball into the end zone and out of bounds on a 4th down.

“(It was) huge,” said Keyport Head Coach Jay Graham explaining his halftime message. “We’re up by 7, but our motto was it’s 0-0, the balls getting kicked off and we’re starting fresh. Keep fighting like we always do…they’re a bunch of great kids, and my coaching staff is second to none.”

After a Keyport punt, the Garnet Gulls pulled back into the game.

There was no plethora of penalties early on and a relatively meaningless false start on Keyport did nothing to stop their scoring drive.

“I saw it (the defense) open up to the right so I decided to take advantage of that with the left move,” said Kay-Flagg on the play.

However, despite a facemask penalty committed by the Red Raiders, two false starts by Point Beach halted their drive to a field goal attempt that sailed wide right.

Keyport added on an extra score following three knees inside the victory formation, when on fourth down they handed the ball off to runout the clock.

A 10-play, 5:22 drive by Keyport to begin their first possession saw nine of those plays handed off to sophomore running back Devin Wollner. who carried the ball 31 times for a remarkable 165 yards rushing. It was senior Chris Hogrefe who carried the ball into the end zone for the first score of the night.

“These kids are fighters, when they’re backs are to the wall, they turn around and fight,” said Graham. “That’s what happened tonight.”

Three plays later and Kay-Flagg delivered the dagger that would inevitably send Point Beach home and his team into the finals.

night for the Red Raiders, one of which was Wollner who Graham spoke highly of after the game. “Every game he’s a guarantee almost,” said Graham. But heading into the championship matchup against Asbury Park, which is also a rematch of last year’s semi-finals where Keyport stunned the Blue Bishops in front of their own crowd, Graham adds one thing to take away from this win.

An 11-play drive by Point Beach followed, which included the aforementioned penalties and a missed 23-yard field goal attempt. On Point Beach’s next possession came a key interception in the midst of a drive that may have netted a score. This was followed by a five-play drive including a 42-yard catch by senior wide receiver Cody Young. Keyport had a field goal blocked by junior linebacker Luke Frauenheim of the Garnet Gulls with 11 seconds left in the first half. Keyport opened up the second half with a three-and-out, and this was followed by Point Beach, aided by an encroachment penalty, to go on an eight-play drive leading to a tie game. Not to be outdone, Keyport then came back with a score of their own to retake the lead on the heels of a seven-play drive ending with a touchdown.

Mater Dei Prep Shu ts Ou t 7-Time Def ending Champion St. Joe’s to Reach Non-Pu blic Group II Final

By Bob Badders – Senior Managing Editor

A

s Mater Dei Prep began building steam and bulldozing every opponent in its path during the regular season, the question still remained as to exactly how good the Seraphs are . They answered that question emphatically on Saturday afternoon in one of the biggest moments in program history. Led by a ferocious defense and fueled by big plays, second-seeded Mater Dei shut out third-seeded St. Joseph (Hammonton), 26-0, in the semifinals of the NJSIAA Non-Public Group II playoffs on Saturday afternoon, ousting the 7-time defending champion Wildcats and moving one win from securing the first sectional title in school history. “We had to show everybody that doubted us they were wrong,” said senior Eddie Lewis. “We’ve been wanting to make a statement all year, since my freshman year. We’re trying to show the whole Shore and the state that Mater Dei is here to make a statement.” “It’s no surprise to us,” said senior Marvin Pierre. “We knew they were a real good team so we practice hard all week and came in ready to play.” St. Joseph has long been the standard for small non-public programs in New Jersey and entered the playoffs with a staggering 25 sectional titles under Hall of Fame coach Paul Sacco. Mater Dei sent the clear message that it is ready to win now by dominating from start to finish against a team that is used to being the one pushing opponents around this time of year. The Seraphs will play fourth-seeded Holy Spirit in the Non-Public Group II championship game at 1 p.m. on Saturday Dec. 3 at Kean University. “They were a very good team and the difference in the game was our kids were really prepared for everything they did,” said Mater Dei head coach Dino Mangiero. “There was great attention to detail this week and that’s what’s going to win games.” A 48-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback George Pearson to senior Marvin Pierre early in the second quarter ended up being the only points Mater Dei (11-0) would need to advance to just its second sectional final in program history and first since 1999. Pierre added a 4-yard touchdown run to build a 13-0 halftime

lead, and Lewis returned a punt 95 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Justin Mcrae polished off the win with a 5-yard touchdown run after a blocked punt late in the fourth quarter. It was the Seraphs’ defense that set the tone, however, keeping St. Joe’s Wing-T rushing attack in check all afternoon. Mater Dei entered the game with the Shore Conference’s No. 1 defense allowing a paltry 4.9 points per game, and proved that number was a true indicator of their defending Mater Dei prowess. Mater Dei finished with 11 tackles for a loss or no gain, 5 sacks and a fumble recovery. Pierre had two tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks at linebacker, while senior linebacker Jonathan Lubintus had three tackles for a loss, a sack and a fumble recovery. Senior defensive end Shane Mastro also had two tackles for a loss. “This type of an offense (Wing-T), when you get them behind their schedule and now it’s first-and-15 they have to go deeper into their playbook,” Mangiero said. “They’re a type of offense that wants to get 5, 6, then 3, then 4 and then play action and hope to catch you sleeping. That’s why we took some chances with some run blitzes called because we knew if we got them behind schedule we would have a better chance to beat them.” After a scoreless first quarter, Mater Dei took the lead for good on the second play of the second quarter when Pearson lofted a perfect pass into the hands of Pierre, who looked over his shoulder to make the catch before shedding a tackler to get into the end zone. Following a St. Joe’s punt Mater Dei moved in for its second score when junior wide receiver Kyle Devaney hauled in a 34-yard catch to give the Seraphs firstand-goal at the 10-yard line. Two plays later, Pierre walked in from four yards out to push the lead to 13-0. The score remained that way through halftime as both defenses took turns forcing punts. After Mater Dei stopped St. Joe’s with a sack, a tackle for a loss and a pass breakup by Lewis to force a punt from near midfield, Lewis put on a show

with a dazzling special teams play. The FBS recruit showed why he counts Iowa, North Carolina Rutgers, Indiana and Syracuse among his scholarship offers by taking the kick back 95 yards for a score to put Mater Dei up 19-0.

P r e p Defense

The way the Seraphs were playing defense it was evident Lewis’ score had put the game away. Mater Dei had two drives stopped inside St. Joe’s territory, one on a sack and another after it couldn’t convert a first-andgoal from the 10-yard line, but those missed opportunities were easily absorbed because of a lights-out effort on the other side of the ball.

The special teams unit made its second big play when a St. Joe’s punt was low and into the back of one of its blockers, and was recovered by Pierre at the 5yard line. On the next play Mcrae, a senior, scored up the middle to push the lead to 26-0. The rout was on, and so was the party at the Middletown school ready to embrace its new-found success. The final mountain to climb for immortality is Holy Spirit, which has a rich history with 10 sectional titles. If the Spartans weren’t sure if Mater Dei was for real, they, just like everybody else, found out on Saturday. “I feel like this game right here showed the state how good we really are,” Pierre said. “It feels good for the whole community and I know the whole school will be at this game.”

fter a record-setting previous two seasons where the Shore Conference won six combined NJSIAA sectional titles, the potential to shatter that record comes on Saturday December 3 when 10 area teams in nine different sections will play for state titles. With Middletown North in North 2 Group IV, Manalapan in Central Jersey Group V, Brick in Central Jersey Group IV, RumsonFair Haven in Central Jersey Group III, Manasquan in Central Jersey Group II, Asbury Park vs. Keyport in Central Jersey Group I, Toms River North in South Jersey Group V, Wall in South Jersey Group III and Mater Dei Prep in Non-Public Group II the Shore Conference is once again having great success in the postseason.

Before that we have the annual Thanksgiving matchups, and although the list isn’t as long as it used to be there are some terrific matchups on tap. The headliner is Manasquan and Wall meeting in what is usually draws the biggest crowd on turkey day. The last times these two teams met on Thanksgiving and played in a state final the following week was 2002, and an estimated crowd of 10,000 packed the stands. There’s also Middletown North and Middletown South and longtime rivalries such as Asbury Park vs. Neptune, Red Bank vs. Long Branch and Lakewood vs. Toms River South. Here we’ll give an overview of each of the nine sectional championship games involving Shore Conference teams. Remember to check ShoreSportsNetwork.com in the days leading up to the state title games for a complete breakdown of each game.

NORTH JERSEY 2, GROUP IV

5-Sayreville (9-2) vs. 2-Middletown North (82), 1 p.m. at Rutgers University

Middletown North is making its first appearance in a state final since 1996 while Sayreville is back in its first state final since 2011. The Bombers are also a story of redemption around the state, battling back to prominence after a hazing scandal that rocked the community and forced the cancellation of the 2014 season. Middletown North is enjoying its best season since winning its third overall sectional title in 1996. The Lions have a balanced offense led by senior quarterback Donald Glenn, senior wide out Brendan Kube, senior Dwight Wilkerson and junior running back Connor Welsh. They are coming off a 20-0 shutout over Summit in the semifinals.

Glenn has thrown for 2,123 yards and 19 touchdowns as one of the top quarterbacks in the Shore Conference. Kube has caught 49 passes for 930 yards and 7 touchdowns, and after a breakout season as a junior is once again one of the top receivers in the Shore. Wilkerson is Middletown

North’s do-it-all player on both sides of the ball. When Welsh went down with an injury early in the season he stepped in at running back with some big games. He still leads the team with 653 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Welsh returned after missing five games and has ran for 100 yards in consecutive games, which has been a big boost to the Lions’ offense.

The Lions are No. 11 in defense in the Shore Conference allowing 17.1 points per game and have several standouts. Senior linebacker Nick Kish has led the team in tackles each of the last two seasons and is at the top again with 93 stops in 10 games. Kube is also having a great year on defense with 92 tackles and an interception at defensive back. Senior Brock Zenker has 73 tackles, a team-high 9 tackles for a loss and a team-high 3 interceptions. Junior defensive lineman Austin Dewise is having a breakout season with 50 tackles and nine sacks.

Sayreville counters with an offense that just scored 42 points to eliminate defending champion Middletown South in the semifinals. Senior quarterback Jayson DeMild has thrown for 2,083 yards and 24 touchdowns after hanging 345 and four scores on the Eagles. DeMild has also rushed for 371 yards and five touchdowns, but the main running back is senior Mike Liberti, who has 1,027 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns on the season. DeMild spreads the ball around effectively as the top three receivers each have over 20 receptions. Sophomore Jacari Carter leads the team in catches with 30 for 336 yards and three touchdowns. The player Middletown North could have a tough time dealing with is 6-foot-7 senior Jahsim Floyd, who has a teamhigh 509 yards and eight touchdowns on an average of 23 yards per catch.

The Chiefs have rolled since then, including avenging their other loss by drubbing Old Bridge 42-3 in the semifinals. The Braves come in after a 34-20 win over defending champion South Brunswick in the other semifinal.

Manalapan’s offense once again features great balance with a power running game and dynamic passing game, and is third in the Shore averaging 38.3 points per game. Junior tailback Naim Mayfield is one of the top running backs in the Shore Conference and has rushed for 1,525 yards and 21 touchdowns while averaging over nine yards per carry. His wingman is junior fullback Chris Maksimik, a punishing blocker who is also versatile enough to have five rushing touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Luke Corcione has had a phenomenal year with 1,692 yards passing and 26 touchdowns with only one interception. Junior Scott Scherzer leads the team in receiving with 35 catches for 603 yards and 6 touchdowns. Temple-bound senior L.J. Holder has five touchdown catches while senior tight end Mike Taylor has a team-leading seven touchdown receptions. Mayfield is also a dangerous receiver out of the backfield.

Senior linebacker Mike Germann leads Sayreville’s defense with 56 tackles and 13 tackles for a loss. Floyd has a team-high seven sacks at outside linebacker while Liberti is a versatile outside linebacker with 31 tackles, 4 sacks and 2 interceptions.

Before going for a state championship, Middletown North will take on rival Middletown South on Thanksgiving.

Central Jersey Group V 2-Piscataway (8-2) at 1-Manalapan (11-0), 10 a.m. at Rutgers University

Manalapan will be going for its second state title overall and second in three seasons while the Chiefs will be playing for their ninth sectional championship. This game is a rematch of an Oct. 29 matchup where Manalapan rallied for a 21-10 win, at Rutgers no less, to hand Piscataway one of its two losses this year.

The Braves’ defense is also third in the Shore at 9.5 points per game. Junior linebacker Sal Tardogno has over 100 tackles to lead the team and also has three sacks, while sophomore Tommy Pearce, who missed three games with an injury, is back and playing well as the team’s second leading tackler. Senior edge rusher Jonathan Pimentel has a teamhigh six sacks while junior Lazarus Marquez has five sacks. Senior safety Cody Weiner leads the secondary where he has 70 tackles. Senior Sean Kinniburgh and junior Eli Avivi each have two interceptions. Piscataway’s run-based offense is led by senior Elijah Barnwell, an FBS recruit who has rushed for 1,486 yards and 22 touchdowns on the season. Juwon Jackson has added 662 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Danny Haus has thrown for 668 yards and 7 touchdowns and spreads the ball evenly between receivers Trey Hogan, Nazhir James and Joshua Boyd.

The Chiefs defense allows just 13.7 points per game and has surrendered 20 or more points just three times.

Given it’s a rematch, it will be interesting to see what adjustments are made by both teams. Piscataway controlled a large portion of the game until Manalapan began its comeback in the second half, and it was really a 14-10 game until a late interception return for a touchdown by Kinniburgh. The Chiefs did a very good job against Manalapan’s passing game in holding Corcione to just 22 yards on 6 of 16 passing. Barnwell ran for 148 yards, however Piscataway still scored just 10 points.

also sees time at quarterback and has 229 yards and two touchdowns. The Tigers’ main quarterback is senior Ryan Marston, who has 576 yards passing and four touchdowns. The leading receiver by a wide margin is 230-pound senior tight end Jean Sapini with 29 catches for 408 yards and 5 touchdowns.

South Plainfield’s defense is coming off a 26-0 shutout of Ewing in the semifinals and has three shutouts on the season. Senior linebacker Dillon Harris leads the team with 68 tackles and five tackles for a loss. Senior defensive end Austin Fritze has a team-high six sacks and senior Mike DeAngelis leads the secondary with three interceptions.

This will be a physical battle that comes down to the end. Piscataway has a Thanksgiving game vs. Franklin while Manalapan has two weeks to prepare.

CENTRAL JERSEY GROUP IV

2-Allentown (9-2) vs. 1-Brick (8-3), 4 p.m. at Rutgers University

Central Jersey Group III

4-Rumson-Fair Haven (8-2) vs. 3-South Plainfield (8-2), 7 p.m. at Rutgers University

Central Jersey Group II

The Bulldogs defense under coordinator and now head coach Jerry Schulte has put together some epic performances in the postseason, and last week’s 21-13 victory over Somerville is right near the top. The Pioneers entered undefeated and averaging over 50 points per game, but were held to just two touchdowns, including being shut out in the second half, as Rumson reached its eighth sectional final in program history and seventh in 10 years.

Manasquan is back in a state final for the first time since 2009 after a 31-27 road win over a previously-undefeated Roselle team that was averaging over 50 points per game. The Warriors already have a Shore Conference record 11 sectional championships and can make it No. 12 to complete a bounce-back year after consecutive 3-7 seasons.

Rumson is trying to join a select group in the Shore Conference by winning its fourth straight state title. If the Bulldogs can pull off another state title victory they will join Middletown South (four in a row from 2003-2006) and Manasquan (a record five straight from 1998-2002) as Shore programs to claim four consecutive state championships.

Brick had to escape Keller Memorial Field with a 24-23 win over Freehold to reach its 11th sectional final while Allentown put away defending champion Jackson Memorial, 41-15, with a big second half to reach just its second sectional final in program Brick RB Ja’Sir Taylor history.

The Dragons and Redbirds are at the opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to championship history. Brick is one of the winningest programs in the Shore with seven sectional championships while Allentown has never won a state title. Brick’s last championship came in this very bracket in 2013.

Brick’s run-based offense has several playmakers, starting with Temple recruit Ja’Sir Taylor, who will also play wide receiver. Senior quarterback Anthony Costanza, senior running back Rashan McCall, senior quarterback/wide receiver John Prato and sophomore running back/wide receiver Cole Groschel are the Dragons’ top offensive players. Brick is No. 13 in the Shore in points per game at 27.6.

Brick’s defense allows 17.8 points per game and is also ranked No. 13 in the Shore. Senior Jack Finelli and junior Patrick Geissler lead the way along the defensive line while senior Dean Helstowski is the leading tackler from his spot at middle linebacker. Senior linebacker Jay Obenauer has been a playmaker with two defensive touchdowns, while Prato is a standout in the secondary and Groschel is among the Shore leaders in interceptions with four.

Allentown will be a big test for Brick’s defense because of its balance. Senior quarterback Jordan Winston has thrown for 1,091 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushed for 1,135 yards and 11 touchdowns. Running back Joe Mannino went for 234 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-15 win over Jackson in the semifinals and has 1,059 yards and 17 touchdowns on the season. There’s also Aydon Chavis and his 584 yards and eight touchdowns. Winston’s top receiving target is X’zavier Harris with 17 receptions for 475 yards and 5 touchdowns. Joe Bellotti has 306 yards and three touchdowns.

On defense the Redbirds have a standout linebacker in senior Rick Mottram. The Bucknell recruit had a monster game against Jackson with 22 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble. Defensive lineman Colin Roy has 7.5 sacks to lead the team. Allentown held Jackson running back Mike Gawlik, the Shore Conference’s leading rusher with over 2,000 yards, to just 91 yards on 30 carries.

Before going for its fourth title, Rumson will play rival Shore Regional on Thanksgiving eve.

South Plainfield has never won a sectional title and will be making its fourth appearance in a state final.

Rumson’s defense is led by senior middle linebacker Mike Ruane, a University of Massachusetts recruit, who is a Defensive Player of the Year candidate in the Shore Conference with over 100 tackles on the No. 2 defense in the Shore (8.1 points per game). Senior Liam Adams anchors the defensive line and Chase Pfrang has five sacks on the year. Senior Mike Murdock is a standout at safety that leads a very good secondary. James Melia had a big game in the win over Somerville with six tackles and two interceptions. Pat Russo had a game-clinching interception and Jake Giannotto has also had a very good season. Rumson’s defense has posted four shutouts and allowed just 10 touchdowns all season.

Rumson’s offense is centered around the running game with Colgate-bound senior quarterback Mike Ruane and senior running back Matt Vecchiarelli, and averages 27.8 points per game. O’Connor, who missed two games with turf toe, has 625 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns plus 381 yards passing and 6 touchdowns. Vecchiarelli has 890 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns. Rumson also has junior speedster Peter Lucas and sophomore fullback Alex Maldjian. Senior Tim Leonard leads the offensive line.

South Plainfield’s run-heavy offense is led by punishing fullback Zack DelVecchio, a sophomore who is in his second year as a starter and is also a standout wrestler. He has 950 yards rushing and nine touchdowns. Junior Charles Lovett has 507 yards and six touchdowns on an average of 8.7 yards per carry in seven games. Lovett

Rumson RB Matt Vecchiarelli

5-Bernards (8-3) vs. 3-Manasquan (9-1), 7 p.m. at Kean University

Bernards beat Point Boro in the first round before knocking off top-seeded Lincoln in the semifinals. The Mountaineers have never won a sectional title and are making just their second appearance. They were 2-10 in the playoffs allManasquan RB Connor Morgan time entering this season while Manasquan now has 42 playoff wins in its history.

Manasquan is getting it done the way it has since the beginning of time with a physical rushing attack, timely play-action passes and a tenacious defense. Junior running back Connor Morgan is the workhouse of the multiple-I offense with 1,316 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns on the season. His is coming off a game where he ran for 188 yards and two scores on 38 carries, and also threw a touchdown pass. Senior quarterback Jerry Maher has made clutch throws all season and takes great care of the ball. HIs top targets are senior wide receiver Damaso Jaime and senior tight end Adam Schreck. Jaime is also a dangerous special teams player and a threat to score every time he touches the ball. The Warriors’ defense is among the best in the Shore at 16.7 points per game. Schreck has had a great season at defensive end with 12 sacks and 17.5 tackles for a loss, while Dylan Pacetti is also a standout up front. Senior linebacker Jack Mallett has over 90 tackles and is the leader of the defense. The secondary features Jaime, senior Kyle LeBlanc, junior Tommy Antonucci and sophomore James Pendergist. Bernards has a high-scoring offense at 34.2 points per game and enters having won five games in a row. Two of its three losses have come to teams Manasquan just beat in the playoffs, A.L. Johnson and Roselle, however.

Senior quarterback Stephen Gribbon has thrown for 1,806 yards and 18 touchdowns and senior running back Matt Tantleff has rushed for 873 yards and 18 touchdowns on the season. The passing game of Bernards centers around the running backs as Tantleff is also the leading receiver with 38 catches for 742 yards and six touchdowns. Senior Marc Murphy has 16 catches for 383 yards and 4 touchdowns and has also rushed for 773 yards and 8 touchdowns. Senior Curt Gouldin has 13 catches for 258 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Championship from page 19 The Mountaineers give up 23.8 points per game, so their penchant has been to win high-scoring games. Murphy at outside linebacker is their defensive standout with 126 tackles, 7.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks. Defensive end Cubby Schuller has 3.5 sacks and Gouldin and Tantleff each have two interceptions.

Manasquan has another huge game before the state final when it takes on rival Wall, which is also playing for a state title in South Jersey Group III, on Thanksgiving.

CENTRAL JERSEY GROUP I 5-Asbury Park (7-3) vs. 3-Keyport (10-1), 4 p.m. at Kean University

two touchdowns. Fullback Cishiume Simmons has added five rushing touchdowns. Junior quarterback Ja’King Agostini has thrown for 722 yards and four touchdowns while also running for three touchdowns. He spreads the ball equally between Donte Abrams, Javon Higgs, Josmere Taylor and Dyquan Young.

Both teams have had outstanding years on the defensive side of the ball. Keyport is fourth in the Shore at 12.5 points per game while Asbury Park is 7th at 15.5 points per game.

Senior linebacker Jay Hansen leads the Red Raiders with 84 tackles while senior defensive lineman Zack Frick has 80 tackles, 2 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. Zack Walker leads the secondary with three interceptions.

Simmons leads the Blue Bishops defense from his linebacker position with 106 tackles and 10 sacks. Agologos has 85 tackles and 3.5 sacks while defensive lineman Calvin Simmons-Carter has 87 tackles and 6.5 sacks. Safety Devin Nash-McGhee has a team-high three interceptions while Abrams and Taylor each have two. Keyport has two weeks to prepare for the state championship while Asbury Park will play Neptune on Thanksgiving.

It’s an all-Shore Conference matchup for the Central Jersey Group I championship as Class B Central rivals Asbury Park and Keyport strap it up for a second time this season.

Keyport won the regular season meeting, 14-7, and is having its best season since going 11-1 in 2003. If the Red Raiders can get to 11-1 this year they’ll be raising the program’s seventh sectional championship. Keyport used a touchdown in the final two minutes to pull ahead and defeat Point Beach, 27-14, in the semifinals.

Asbury Park is in its first championship game since winning the program’s sixth title to cap a run of four state crowns in five years. The Blue Bishops knocked off two-time defending champion Shore 39-19 in the semifinals.

SOUTH JERSEY GROUP V

3-Millville (9-1) vs. 1-Toms River North (11-0), 6 p.m. at Rowan University

A juggernaut Toms River North teams looks to win its second straight sectional title in a loaded bracket while also going down in history as arguably the greatest offense in Shore Conference history.

Under first-year head coach Jay Graham, a former Keyport player and longtime assistant under Hall of Fame coach Mike Ciccotelli, the Red Raiders are 10-1 with their only loss coming to Non-Public Group II finalist Mater Dei Prep. Offensively, Keyport averages 25.5 points per game and is fueled by a running game led by a senior-laden offensive line and sophomore running back Toms River North is coming off a Devin Wollner. In his first year as a starter Wollner has rushed 62-34 win over Howell in the for 1,532 yards and nine touchdowns on an average of 7 semifinals. It’s been that Toms River North QB Mike Husni yards per carry. Fellow sophomore Greg Robinson has kind of season for the 10 rushing touchdowns Mariners, who are averaging a Shore Conferencehigh 46.9 points per game and have won 21 consecutive games. Senior quarterback Mike Husni is having an all-time season with 1,977 yards passing and 25 touchdowns to just six interceptions while also rushing for a team-high 1,545 yards and 18 touchdowns on an average of 9.4 yards per carry. Senior running back Parker Day has 1,412 yards rushing and 23 touchdowns as the Mariners average 309 yards rushing per game. Unsurprisingly, Toms River North also has a physical offensive line that is among the best in the Shore

The Mariners also have arguably New Jersey’s best wide receiver tandem with seniors Darrion Carrington and Bryce Watts. Carrington has caught 34 passes for 909 yards and 15 touchdowns and is an FBS recruit. Watts, who has committed to Rutgers, has 30 catches for 765 yards and 9 touchdowns. Both are averaging over 25 yards per reception.

Asbury Park Keyport doesn’t throw the ball much, but when it does it’s usually for a big gain. Senior quarterback Chris Hogrefe has 631 yards and six touchdowns and his leading receiver, senior Cody Young, has 14 catches for 380 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Keyport

Asbury Park’s offense averages 23.4 points per game with its running game leading the way. Senior running back Paul Reed has 1,102 yards and 13 touchdowns as the feature back, but last week it was Nymeir Agologos going off for a career-high 137 yards and

20

Toms River North’s defense has given up plenty of points this year against top opponents and has surrendered 21.2 points per game. The Mariners have been better in the second half of the season, however, and have risen up to make key stops in big games. Senior linebacker Pete LaQuaglia leads the Shore Conference in tackles with 160 and also has 12 tackles for a loss and 5 sacks. Junior defensive back Mickey Maldonado Jr. has close to 100 tackles while junior linebacker Daryn Blackwell has over 60 tackles with a team-high 13 for a loss and 4 sacks. Seniors Joe Nardoza and Cole LaBatch are disruptive players in the middle of the defensive line. Watts is also standout defensive back while Carrington will sometimes see snaps in the secondary. The Thunderbolts will be stern test for the Mariners as they have

multiple offensive weapons and plenty of team speed. Quarterback Tristan Harris has thrown for 1,420 yards and 20 touchdowns and running back Clayton Scott has rushed for 1,497 yards and 14 touchdowns. The top wide out for Millville is Marcial Ramos with 37 catches for 702 yards, while Carlton Lawrence has 370 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. Lawrence also has two kickoff returns for touchdowns. Millville’s defense is allowing just 11.6 points per game this season, but will certainly be pushed to the limit by Toms River North’s dynamic offense. Toms River North has two weeks to prepare for the championship game while Millville faces Vineland on Thanksgiving.

SOUTH JERSEY GROUP III

3-Delsea (7-4) vs. 1-Wall (8-2), 11 a.m. at Rowan University

A senior-laden Wall squad goes for its first state championship since 2002 and the program’s most wins since 2004, but to do so the Crimson Knights will have to defeat one of South Jersey’s winningest programs which is also a four-time defending champion.

Wall defeated Hamilton 49-21 in the semifinals while Delsea got past Burlington Township, 27-21.

Wall’s offense is sixth in the Shore averaging 30.1 points per game and revolves around a veteran offensive line and senior running back Sean Larkin. In the semifinal win over Hamilton Larkin rushed for 211 yards and five touchdowns, and has 440 yards rushing and eight touchdowns in the playoffs so far. He has 1,168 yards and 20 touchdowns this season. Junior running back Chevesse Covin has averaged over nine yards per carry with 500 yards and three touchdowns. Junior quarterback Eddie Scott has 382 yards and three touchdowns and junior Brady McNally has 337 yards and five Wall QB Eddie Scott touchdowns.

Scott has thrown for 725 yards and seven touchdowns. His top target is senior wide receiver R.J. Janeczek with 24 receptions for 425 yards and two touchdowns. Senior right end Gene Scott has 14 catches for 123 yards and a score.

Wall’s defense is also No. 6 in the Shore at 14.7 points per game. Senior linebacker Kyle Dallicardillo leads the team in tackles and senior defensive lineman Darryin Valme has five sacks. A standout secondary that includes Larkin, Janeczek, senior Shane Richey and senior Mike Capra has 10 of the team’s 13 interceptions this season.

Delsea’s Delaware Wing-T offense averages 28.9 points per game and, by design, has four backs who will carry the ball with regularity. Charles Walker has 584 yards and five touchdowns and Rashaad Williams has 516 yards and eight touchdowns to spearhead the attack. Keelan Borguet has 461 yards and seven touchdowns and Tahjze Summiel has 322 yards and four touchdowns. The Crusaders almost never throw the ball, so it’s all about getting positive yards on the ground on every play. The Crusaders’ defense allows 24.8 points per game, so it isn’t a shutdown unit. With both teams being run-heavy offenses the offensive lines will play a huge role in the outcome.

This isn’t a vintage Delsea powerhouse team, but where the Crusaders have the big edge is experience. This group of players has never lost a playoff game, so a big-game atmosphere won’t faze them. Wall is a veteran group that has been building toward this moment for a few years and has also played a very good schedule in Class B North, but has never been in this spot before.

Before Wall can worry about the state final it will have to face rival Manasquan in a Thanksgiving game between two state finalists.

NON-PUBLIC GROUP II

4-Holy Spirit (8-2) vs. 2-Mater Dei Prep (11-0), 1 p.m. at Kean University

Mater Dei announced itself to the state when it dominated 7-time defending champion St. Joseph (Hammonton), 26-0, in the semifinals to reach its second state final in history and first since 1999. Now the Seraphs will try to finish off the program’s first state championship and do so in undefeated fashion against the Spartans.

Mater Dei has crushed every opponent in its path with a high-scoring offense and the No. 1 scoring defense in the Shore Conference. The Seraphs have won every game by at least 22 points and are outscoring their opponents 43229. Holy Spirit has played a much more difficult schedule, but as Mater Dei showed in the win over St. Joe’s that doesn’t matter as much as once through.

The Seraphs’ offense has playmakers everywhere with junior quarterback George Pearson and his 24 touchdowns, senior wide receiver Eddie Lewis, senior running back/tight end Marvin Pierre, junior wide out Kyle Devaney, senior running back Sincere Saunders and more. The individual stats aren’t overwhelming, mainly because they are out of the game by halftime most weeks. Lewis is an FBS recruit who can score from anywhere on the field, as evident by his 95-yard punt return for a touchdown against St. Joe’s. Pierre is a 6-foot-2, 220-pound beast on both sides of the ball who has FBS offers and Pearson is another FBS talent who won a state title at Matawan as a freshman.

Mater Dei Prep QB George Pearson

Mater Dei’s defense was incredible in the shutout of St. Joe’s, holding the Wildcats’ Wing-T offense to 79 total yards while registering 11 tackles for a loss or no gain and five sacks. Pierre, linebacker Jonathan Lubintus,

linebacker Juwan Mitchell, defensive end Shane Mastro, linebacker Russell Ferrisi, defensive back Justice George and Lewis at safety have led a group that has been lights out all season.

Holy Spirit’s run-heavy, one-back offense features junior running back Reggie Jean-Charles, who has rushed for 1,433 yards and 16 touchdowns. Justin Figueroa has aded 565 yards and seven touchdowns. Quarterback Mike Costabile has thrown for 456 yards and six touchdowns, and his top wide out is Daniel Tarsitano with 13 catches for 230 yards and three touchdowns. The Spartans have a solid kicker with Cade Antonucci, who has converted 25 of 26 extra points and 5 of 7 field goals with a long of 35.

Holy Spirit’s defense allows 12.1 points per game and has recorded three shutouts. The common game between Mater Dei and Holy Spirit is St. Joe’s. Holy Spirit beat the Wildcats 17-14 in overtime in Week 2.

Mater Dei has two weeks to get ready for the biggest game in program history, while Holy Spirit will face Atlantic City on Thanksgiving.

ith two weeks left in the season there are 10 Shore Conference teams still standing that will play for an NJSIAA title on Saturday Dec. 3. The record of six sectional championships set in each of the last two seasons has a chance to be shattered as a possible nine champions can be crowned in two weeks.

The state finalists are Middletown North in North 2 Group IV, Manalapan in Central Jersey Group V, Brick in Central Jersey Group IV, Rumson-Fair Haven in Central Jersey Group III, Manasquan in Central Jersey Group II, Asbury Park vs. Keyport in Central Jersey Group I, Toms River North in South Jersey Group V, Wall in South Jersey Group III and Mater Dei Prep in Non-Public Group II. Before that happens there are eight games the week of Thanksgiving, with all but two occurring on turkey day. Five ranked teams will be in action, including state finalists Rumson, Middletown North, Wall, Manasquan and Middletown South, plus state finalist Asbury Park. There are major division implications in Class B North where Middletown South can clinch the outright division title with a win over Middletown North. If Middletown North wins and Manasquan beats Wall, the Warriors and Eagles will share the division title. The final T&T Coast Top 10 is just a few weeks away and the final two weeks of the season still present opportunities for change. Here’s where we’re at with the 2016 season nearly complete. anasquan

The top-seeded Mariners throttled Howell, 6234, to return to Rowan University where they will try to defend their South Jersey Group V title against thirdseeded Millville. Senior quarterback Mike Husni continued his record-breaking season with 207 yards passing and 3 touchdowns and 180 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. He has 43 total touchdowns this season, one away from tying the record of 44 set by Mater Dei Prep quarterback Christian Palmer in 2014. Senior running back Parker Day ran for 200 yards and four touchdowns and senior wide out Darrion Carrington caught five passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. Senior wide out Bryce Watts added three catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Next game: Toms River North tries to complete the perfect season and win its second straight state title when it takes on Millville at 6 p.m. on Saturday Dec. 3 at Rowan University in the South Jersey Group V final.

he 2016 boys soccer season ended with the Shore Conference capturing three NJSIAA sectional championship and with the No. 1 team in the conference winning an overall NJSIAA title in one of the state’s toughest groups. The conference turned in a solid season across the board for the second straight year, but 2016 will go down for an especially strong one for Class A North. The division had three Shore Conference Tournament semifinalists for the first time since 2008, which was also the last year the championship game featured two teams from the same division. The final top 10 reflects A North’s dominance during the 2016 season, beginning with the obvious No. 1 and No. 2 teams.

The Colts weren’t that far off from a perfect 25-0 season, but it’s fair to say they wouldn’t trade this season in given the chance. The 2016 CBA club won more games and scored more goals (86) in a single season than any other team in program history and capped its campaign with the program’s sixth NJSIAA Non-Public A championship by beating Seton Hall Prep, 1-0. CBA graduates 10 of its 11 starters, so first-year coach Tom Mulligan will face the challenge of reloading in his second year at the helm.

he Shore Conference set the bar high in boys and girls soccer in 2016, with three boys teams and four girls teams reaching NJSIAA group championship games and three winning at least a share of a state title. While two fewer teams – one boys and girls – reached championship games, the Shore Conference beat last year’s mark by winning at least a share of four state championships – one on the boys side and three for the girls. Here is a roundup from the last week of state tournament action. CBA, Shore Regional bring state titles back to the Jersey Shore The Christian Brothers Academy soccer team began the season as the Shore’s potential powerhouse and the Colts lived up to those expectations by completing a record-setting season for the Shore’s most storied program. CBA defeated Seton Hall Prep, 1-0, on Nov. 13 to capture the program’s sixth overall NJSIAA Non-Public A championship and first since 2011. The Colts’ 24 wins this year set a single-season school record and the team's 86 goals were also the most any CBA team has ever scored - topping the 21-0 team from 2011 by two goals. The 2011 squad was the last to bring a state title back to the Academy and secured the only perfect season in CBA history. Senior Matt Thorsheim scored the winning goal early in the 73rd minute on a pass from senior Matt Mawson, breaking a scoreless draw and adding another in a long list of crucial playoff goals in his four-year career. "We're not the most athletic team in all aspects but soccer is a game of thinking," said Thorsheim, a four-year starter, reigning Shore Sports Network Player of the Year and Bucknell recruit. "We have a bunch of smart players on this team and we showed that." While Thorsheim became the offensive hero for CBA in that one moment, senior Scott Misson was the defensive man of the match for the work he did for the entire 72 minutes leading up to that goal. Misson was assigned to mark Pirates leading scorer and Indiana University recruit Mason Toye and the CBA senior - who is uncommitted - held the state player of the year candidate to one shot on goal in the first half. "I think (Seton Hall Prep) might have some nightmares about Scotty Misson,” CBA coach Tom Mulligan said. “I think he frustrated their superstar, and they definitely have a superstar on their sideline." With Misson shadowing Toye for nearly the entire game, the Colts hammered away on the other end of the field for more than 70 minutes before finally breaking through. In the final seconds of the 72nd minute, Mawson won the ball in the middle of the field and carried it between the hashes before sliding it to his left for Thorsheim. The senior took a touch toward the near post and slammed a left-footed shot past Seton Hall goalkeeper Liam Bertrand with 7:58 remaining on the game clock. In his final year, Thorsheim finished as the leading scorer on the Shore's

32

No. 1 team with 14 goals and 22 assists, including the final score of the season. "That's Matt Thorsheim," Mulligan said. "What a tremendous career. Freshman year, sophomore year, junior year, senior year. To cap it off with a state final goal, you can't say enough about Matt Thorsheim. He's a special player and a special kid and he'll go down in CBA soccer history as one of the all-time special players, without a doubt."

Sh or e R eg io na l gi r ls go b a ck- to- b a ck in Gr o up I Sophomore Frankie McDonough and freshman Julia Eichenbaum each scored a goal and sophomore Hannah Birdsall helped initiate two as the Blue Devils beat Glen Ridge for the second straight year, 3-2, to capture their second consecutive Group I championship. "We lost eight seniors from last year, we lost our whole back line and most of our midfield," McDonough said. "After we played a few games, we started to jell together and as we kept playing and kept winning, we started to believe we could get far again. Once this game started, it was like we had all been here before. Go hard after everything and when you get a shot, you take the shot." Eichenbaum forced an own goal to give Shore a 1-0 lead just 1:10 into the action and later slammed in an official goal in the 36th minute, giving her at least one goal in each of Shore's six NJSIAA Tournament games and eight total for the tournament. Shore grabbed the early lead on the heels of a counter-attack. Birdsall skipped a diagonal ball from the right sideline toward the far left post and Eichenbaum made the run to chase the ball down. She slid a shot that rolled across the mouth of the goal, toward the right post and while attempting to clear the ball off the line, a Glen Ridge defender knocked the ball into the goal. The Ridgers responded exactly 22 minutes into the match off a corner kick, with Liz Hauschild heading the ball into the net from close range to finish the play. Shore did not allow Glen Ridge to stay even for long and it was McDonough who gave the Blue Devils the lead for good in the 28th minute. The sophomore ran through a defender, beat a second defender to her right and unleashed a 25-yard strike to the upper right side of the goal to put Shore on top, 2-1.

VOLUME-VIII

The Blue Devils added one more goal before halftime and it came off a corner kick by Birdsall. The sophomore bent a left-footed service toward the near side of the frame and Glen Ridge goalkeeper Victoria Woznick batted the ball off the near right post. The ball came down on the end line and Eichenbaum poked it into the side of the goal. Glen Ridge pulled back within a goal in the 52nd minute when Lindsay Jaiyesimi, in one motion, stole the ball from Shore goalkeeper Julia Valinoti and slid it to the lower left corner of the goal. Although Glen Ridge made it close on the scoreboard, the Ridgers never pressured the Blue Devils over the final 28 minutes thanks to the Shore defense and senior defensive center midfielder Devon McDonough, who was a steady and, at times, dominant presence in the middle while her younger sister, Eichenbaum and Birdsall attacked the Glen Ridge goal. "She's been really unselfish about her role and everyone has so much trust in her that if we miss a ball, she's going to pick us up and stop it," Frankie McDonough said of her older sister. "She's a really great captain to everyone, she's always there to motivate us before and during the game. As her sister, I know I can always count on her. She always has my back and I think everyone feels like that when she's on the field."

RBC caps turnaround with share of Non-Public A title Red Bank Catholic rallied from three different one-goal deficits and played Oak Knoll to a 3-3 draw to earn a share of the Non-Public A championship on Nov. 13. The result clinched the program's fifth overall state title and first championship since winning a Non-Public A co-title in 2010. "We worked really hard to get here and we didn't want to just give up," said senior Sophia Demurjian, who scored the first RBC goal. "We knew that if we kept going, we could win the game and we ended up as co-champs and I'm really proud of all the girls." Each time the Royals scored a goal to take the lead, RBC responded with an equalizer within 2:18 on the clock. After Ashley Ferry gave Oak Knoll a 10 lead with a goal in the 18th minute, Demurjian answered 1:15 later by chipping an 18-yard shot over goalkeeper Shannon McDermott after taking a through ball from junior Jyllissa Harris. Both teams defended for the next 20-plus minutes before Oak Knoll again struck. Senior Meagan O'Callahan ripped an 18-yard strike off the bottom of

the crossbar and the ball bounced straight down. The ball was initially ruled to be in play after hitting the bar, but the middle official checked with the sideline referee and overturned the call to a goal 60:39 into the match. The Caseys did not allow the demoralization to fester and senior Marissa Rafaniello slammed the equalizer into the goal 2:18 after O'Callahan's goal. Just 2:13 after Oak Knoll regained the lead at 3-2, RBC answered off an Emily Holtz corner kick. Sophomore Juliana Rafaniello parked herself on the far post and knocked the corner kick off a defender and in to tie the game 65:52 into the action. From that point on, neither team could add a goal, although each came close. Oak Knoll's Yasla Ngoma drilled another shot off the bar that bounced straight down, but this time stayed in play in the 72nd minute. In the eighth minute of overtime, RBC nearly ended the game when Demurjian broke away from the defense. McDermott came off her line and rejected Demurjian's approach before she could get off a shot. Red Bank Catholic began the season 4-6 and rallied to reach the Shore Conference Tournament before advancing to and winning a share of the group championship. The Caseys beat Howell and lost to second-seeded Freehold Township, 1-0 - a short run that prepared them for the South Jersey NonPublic A bracket. "We had to fix things," DeMurjian said. "(We believed) if we kept working hard, things would change and it did. We got this far and we became cochamps."

Wa l l ea r ns sh ar e o f fi rs t s tate ti tl e Senior Goalkeeper Alex Panasuk and the Wall defense nailed down their 21st shutout of the season Saturday against perennial Group III contender Northern Highlands, but the Highlanders kept Wall off the board as well as the two one-loss teams settled for a scoreless draw and a share of the Group III title. Although Wall did not win its first Group III title game appearance since 1998, the Crimson Knights did earn a share of their first ever overall state championship. "It's a great feeling," Panasuk said. "Everyone worked so hard this season and I can't thank everyone enough for playing their hearts out today. We deserve to be champs, even if it's co-champs."

Junior Maggie Wishart anchored the back line from the center back spot, while junior Hailee Reinhardt marked Northern Highlands leading scorer Eva Hurm and also saved a pair of potential goals off the endline during the first five minutes of the game. After Reinhardt helped Wall escape a shaky opening to the game, the Crimson Knights settled into the match and dominated play over the final 12 minutes of the first half. Junior Jenna Karabin unleashed a pair of dangerous shots, the second of which drilled the crossbar in the 36th minute. Northern Highlands was making its sixth consecutive appearance in the Group III final after winning four straight from 2011 to 2014 and losing to Colts Neck in last year's championship game. With eight junior starters set to return as seniors in 2017, Wall's cochampionship this season might just be the penultimate phase in its quest to win an outright Group III title. Wall lost in the Central Jersey Group III final in each of the past three seasons and won the Shore Conference Tournament in 2014.

To ms Ri v er S outh fa ll s i n Gr o up I I I Fi na l Junior Sebastian Varela scored two goals and assisted another Sunday to lead Ramapo to a 3-0 win over Toms River South in the Group III final and put an exclamation mark on a perfect 22-0 season and the seventh group title in program history. Ramapo is the first NJSIAA team to finish the season with a perfect wonloss record (unbeaten with no ties) since Christian Brothers Academy finished the 2011 season 21-0. The Raiders earned a corner kick in the 12th minute and after his initial service was turned back, Noah Kilday slid the ball over to Varela, who hit a low, firm shot through a sea of legs and past Toms River South goalkeeper Dom Pizzi. Varela nearly made it 2-0 on three occasions after his icebreaker. He missed a one-on-one chance in the 30th and missed consecutive shots in the final minute. He chipped a shot over Pizzi that hit the bar and after gathering the rebound, he knocked another shot off the crossbar. Varela assisted the second Raiders goal in the 55th minute, which started when outside midfielder Matt O'Shea beat a pair of defenders and played the ball to Varela at the near right post. Varela chipped a cross in the air to the far post and Andrew Furman one-timed a shot into the net.

With Toms River South already reeling, Varela delivered the knockout punch in the 64th when he nailed a 20-yard direct kick to the far right corner of the goal despite Pizzi getting his fingertips on the shot. Toms River South ended its season in the Group III title game for the second straight year, with Chatham beating the Indians 4-0 in the 2015 championship game. Toms River South returned nine starters from last year's team and will bid farewell to six senior starters following this season - Pizzi, Tyler Egnatuk, Dylan Parks, Ben Brown, Chris Kluxen and Dylan Danelson. "Their goal was to goal was to get back here," Toms River South coach Ed Leibe said of his players. "That's what they had talked about ever since the last game of last year. They accomplished all the goals they set out to this year and then they just ran into this team. Nobody was beating (Ramapo) today."

Asbury Park boys and TR North girls make history While neither Asbury Park’s boys nor Toms River North’s girls reached the finals in their respective groups, both made history by winning sectional championships. Asbury Park won the program’s first sectional title in 35 years by beating Palmyra, 1-0, in the Central Jersey Group I final on Nov. 10. Senior Fenelson Etienne poked in a goal in the sixth minute off an assist from junior and leading scorer Davensky JoinVilmar for the game’s lone goal and junior Widmaier Beaubrun earned the shutout in goal after coming on in relief of starter Joey Johnson. Beaubrun moved from the midfield to goal after Johnson sustained a broken jaw when he collided with teammate Shown Narcisse, who was also knocked out for the game with a cut above his left eye that required stitches. With Johnson out again in the Group I semifinals, Asbury Park fell to Haddon Township, 5-0, to end the program’s best season since 1981. Toms River North’s girls team fell to eventual Group IV champion Hunterdon Central in the Group IV semifinals, but not before the Mariners won the program’s first ever sectional championship. Sophomore Morgan Curtis, junior Krystal Hund and junior Melissa Wilhelm each scored a goal and Toms River North beat top-seeded Eastern to win the South Jersey Group IV championship.
