Every Friday night during the season we broadcast the Jersey Mike’s Game of the Week on 92.7 WOBM and Beach Radio 1160 & 1310 with Matt Harmon, Kevin Williams and Ed Sarluca calling the action. From Manalapan to Toms River we brought the excitement of live play-by-play action to listeners throughout the shore area.
This season also featured the return of the very popular Jersey Mike’s Team of the Week. Selected by the staff of the Shore Sports Network each week we visited the honored team at practice, presented them with a special football and gave the head coach $500 in Jersey Mike’s gift cards for a “team meal” or two. Among the teams selected were the Lakewood Piners and Coach L.J. Clark was especially appreciative. “I would like to thank Jersey Mike’s on behalf of the Lakewood High School district for your kind act to the football program. The players and coaches are very thankful for the honor and very much enjoyed the subs.” Clark added, “we would also like to thank the Shore Sports Network for all they do for Shore Conference football and the great support of Lakewood.”

The Braves had another great season in winning the Class A North division title and advancing to a state sectional final for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. However, their bid for a perfect season and the program’s second state title was thwarted by South Brunswick, 18-14, in the Central Jersey Group V final to knock them from the top of the rankings for the first time all season. Along the way to winning the division title for the second straight year and seventh time in the last eight seasons, Manalapan also extended its regular-season winning streak to 19 games. Included in the Braves’ 11 victories was a 55-22 win over Central Jersey Group IV finalist Freehold and a 49-28 win over South Jersey Group V semifinalist Howell. Manalapan finished with the Shore’s No. 2 offense averaging 42.4 points per game. Senior running back Naim Mayfield had the greatest statistical season by a running back in Shore Conference history, rushing for 2,681 yards, the second-best single-season mark in state history, and scoring 48 total touchdowns. His 282 points scored also set a new state singleseason record. The Braves also had the No. 1 scoring defense in the Shore allowing just 11.5 points per game. Junior linebacker Tommy Pearce led the way with 143 tackles, three sacks and four interceptions. A large and important senior class that includes Mayfield, quarterback Luke Corcione, fullback Chris Maksimik, guard Trevor Radosevich, linebacker Sal Tardogno, wide receivers Scott Scherzer and Symir Blacknall and defensive lineman Antonio Deieso, among others means the Braves will need several players to step forward next year to keep them competing for championships.

all 13 weeks of the season, but for the first time all season there is a change at the top of the Shore Sports Network Top 10, and this time it’s for good. St. John Vianney, owners of a 38-game Shore Conference SJV HC Der ek Sininsky winning streak, will end the season as the No. 1 team in the Shore following a 10-1 season where the Lancers won a fourth straight Class A Central, beat the No. 3 and No. 4 teams and reached the Non-Public Group III semifinals. Manalapan had occupied the No. 1 spot since the preseason, but with the Braves losing to South Brunswick in the Central Jersey Group V final it opened the door for the Lancers to leapfrog into the top spot. Rumson-Fair Haven, Red Bank Catholic and the lone sectional champion from the Shore Conference, Long Branch, round out the top five spots in the final top 10. Head-to-head results are certainly a factor, but body of work, quality wins and pretty much every other aspect of each team’s season were carefully taken into consideration by the Shore Sports Network football staff. With so many moving parts It’s never easy to rank the best 10 teams in a 43-team league, but without further adieu, we present the final edition of the Shore Sports Network Football Top 10. The Lancers end the season atop the Shore Sports Network Top 10 for the first time after a fourth straight 10-win season where they extended their Shore Conference winning streak to 38 games. St. John Vianney won the Class A Central division title for the fourth straight season thanks in large part to a thrilling 31-28 overtime victory over Rumson-Fair Haven. The Lancers other major regular-season victory came in Week 7 when they defeated rival Red Bank Catholic, 35-17. SJV also posted victories over playoff qualifiers Brick, Holmdel, Middletown South and Monmouth. They reached the semifinals of the Non-Public Group III state playoffs where they fell to eventual-champion DePaul, 42-21. The Lancers finished with the No. 1 offense in the Shore averaging 43.7 points per game. Senior Johnny Buchanan, the SSN Defensive Player of the Year, starred on both sides of the ball with 121 tackles, 1,393 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns. The Lancers graduate a tremendous senior class that includes Buchanan, quarterback Haaziq Daniels, allpurpose threat Zyaire Sterling, wideout Sam East, linebacker Josiah Walker, kicker Will Forman and more, and will try keep their run going with a new core in 2018.

The Bulldogs won 10 games for the fourth time in program history and reached their fifth consecutive NJSIAA state final. Their state-title streak was ended at four, however, by Somerville in a 20-15 defeat in the Central Jersey Group III championship. Rumson finished second in Class A Central behind No. 1 St. John Vianney and had wins over playoff qualifiers Holmdel, Middletown South, Monmouth, Carteret and Shore Regional during the regular season. Senior running back Peter Lucas had an outstanding season by rushing for a school single-season record 2,196 yards and scoring 33 total touchdowns to lead the Shore’s No. 6 offense. Junior linebacker Keegan Woods set the school singleseason record for tackles with a Shore-best 155 stops plus four sacks for a defense that was No. 5 in the Shore allowing 13.8 points per game. Woods, fellow linebacker Christian Lanzalotto, defensive lineman Henry Sullivan and fullback Alex Maldjian lead the cast of returners next season.

The Caseys returned as one of the top teams in the Shore this season by winning eight games and taking the Class B North division title for their sixth division championship in the last eight seasons. Among RBC’s victories was a 42-28 victory over Central Jersey Group IV champion Long Branch, as well as wins over playoff qualifiers Middletown South, Wall and Manasquan. The Caseys’ lone regular-season loss was a 35-17 defeat at the hands of top-ranked St. John Vianney. Their season came to an end with a 4913 loss to St. Joseph (Montvale) in the Non-Public Group III quarterfinals. RBC finished with the No. 3 offense in the Shore at 39.8 points per game. Senior running back Zack Bair had his season cut short via an ankle injury in Week 7 but was spectacular in rushing for 1,087 yards on an average of 13.8 yards per carry and scoring 18 total touchdowns. Junior quarterback Steve Lubischer also had a standout season with 1,810 yards passing and 18 touchdowns plus 496 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. The Caseys graduate keys seniors such as Bair, safety Matt Ansell, wideout Brandon Lombana offensive linemen Michael Griggs and Conor Smith and defensive end Emmett McNamara, but have one of the best nucleuses in the Shore returning led by Lubischer, wideout/defensive back Jaden Key, tight end Kevin Bauman and linebackers John Columbia, Gino Tartamella and Charlie Gordinier.

Long Branch (9-3)
The Green Wave were the lone Shore Conference team to win a sectional championship this season and did so in thrilling fashion by beating Freehold, 43-42 in overtime on a 2-point conversion, to claim the Central Jersey Group IV championship. The classic win at Rutgers gave Long Branch its first sectional championship since 1999 and marked a complete turnaround from a team that went 2-8 last season. It also avenged a 27-20 loss to Freehold in Week 9. In the regular season Long Branch had wins over playoff qualifiers Manasquan, Middletown South and Wall. They blanked Middletown South in the first round of the playoffs and defeated Jackson Memorial, 28-3, in the semifinals. Long Branch’s defeats were to No. 4 Red Bank Catholic, Freehold and Red Bank. The Thanksgiving Eve loss to the 2-8 Bucs is puzzling, but Long Branch made that merely a footnote by coming back the following week to win the CJ-IV title. Long Branch’s offense (27.5 ppg) and defense (18 ppg) finished ranked in the top quarter of the Shore. Balance on offense was the difference for Long Branch as senior quarterback Juwan Wilkins threw for 2,053 yards and 22 touchdowns and sophomore running back Jermaine Corbett ran for 1,422 yards and 14 touchdowns. Senior wideout T.J. Fosque had 37 receptions for 704 yards and seven touchdowns and fellow senior Pasa Fields had 50 catches for 585 yards and six touchdowns. Junior linebacker Luke Arnold made 131 tackles and senior defensive end Kaymar Mimes had 10 sacks. Wideout Matt Clark is the only returner from a very productive passing game but with Corbett, Arnold, quarterback/defensive back Marc Dennis, two-way lineman Kevin Cerruti and linebacker Jah’Kwan Gordon back next year the Green Wave should be back in contention.

Howell (9-2)
The Rebels’ best season in nine years saw them win nine games, reach the South Jersey Group V semifinals and finish second in Class A North behind No. 2 Manalapan. Howell had a 55-35 win over Central Jersey Group IV finalist Freehold in the regular season, and also posted a 37-10 win over a Freehold Township team that won eight games. The Rebels defeated Cherokee, 31-17, in the first round of the state playoffs before falling to eventual champion Lenape, 63-28, in the semifinals. Howell’s other loss was a 49-28 defeat to Manalapan. Howell had the No. 5 offense in the Shore Conference at 36.1 points per game and were led by the Shore’s top quarterback-wide receiver duo. Senior Eddie Morales threw for a Shore Conferenceleading 2,156 yards and 24 touchdowns while also rushing for 725 yards and 10 touchdowns, while senior wideout Naseim Brantley hauled in 48 passes for 785 yards and 13 touchdowns (19

total). Senior Ryan Mazik also had a great year with 33 catches for 710 yards and five touchdowns plus four interceptions on defense. The Rebels made great strides to go 15-7 in the last two years after five straight losing seasons, but with most of their top players graduating the challenge will be to keep the momentum going.

Freehold (8-4)

An unforgettable season by senior quarterback Ashante Worthy nearly culminated with a state title, but the Colonials lost a heartbreaker to Long Branch in the Central Jersey Group IV final when the Green Wave converted a 2-point conversion in overtime to win, 43-42. Freehold started the season 1-3 with losses to No. 2 Manalapan and No. 6 Howell, plus a forfeit loss to Freehold Township (a 46-20 win on the field) for using an ineligible player. The Colonials rebounded to win seven straight games to qualify for the playoffs and reach the sectional championship game. Included in that run was a 27-20 win over Long Branch in Week 9 and postseason victories over Nottingham and Brick. Worthy had the greatest statistical season in state history by rushing for a state-record 2,860 yards and 41 touchdowns while also throwing for 2,106 yards and 20 touchdowns. His 61 combined touchdowns between rushing and passing is also a state record and he is the first player in state history to rush and throw for 2,000 yards each in a single season. He also set the Shore Conference-record for combined yards in a game when he accounted for 635 yards and seven touchdowns in a 51-34 win over Nottingham. He had 624 combined yards in a loss to Howell during the regular season. Junior wideout Matt Krauss had a big year with 53 catches for 713 yards and six touchdowns. Worthy is an irreplaceable player but Freehold does bring back a strong group next season that includes Krauss, wideout Quincy Davis, linebacker Knox Stokes, top lineman Alex Verardi, defensive end Qua’jon Everett and running back Ahmad Dixon.

An unprecedented two-year run saw Mater Dei win the Class B Central division title and reach the Non-Public Group II championship game. Coming off the program’s first state title and 12-0 season last year, the Seraphs won eight games in a shortened season and reached a second straight state final. Mater Dei’s season was surrounded by controversy, however, as head coach Dino Mangiero and athletic director/offensive coordinator Lance Bennett were suspended from game-day coaching for the final five weeks of the season for failing to abide by the NJSIAA transfer rule. Mater Dei had its 17-game winning streak snapped in a 28-26 loss to Delbarton, but bounced back to win three straight games to reach the final. The Seraphs rallied to defeat Holy Spirit, 35-34, in the semifinals before falling to St. Joseph (Hammonton), 30-14, in the state final. Senior quarterback George Pearson threw for 1,786 and 18 touchdowns and also ran for 464 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Shore’s No. 8 offense (30.2 ppg). Sophomore running back Malik Ingram ran for 1,251 yards and 15 touchdowns and senior wideout Kyle Devaney had 50 catches for 667 yards and nine touchdowns. Junior linebacker Shittah Sillah had 83 tackles and four sacks and junior defensive end Izaiah Henderson had six sacks to lead a defense that yielded just 15.9 points per game to finish No. 9 in the Shore. Isaiah Noguera was sensational on special teams with a Shore Conference-best seven total kick return touchdowns. Pearson, a Central Michigan recruit, leads the list of graduation seniors but Mater Dei brings back several of its top players and should once again be the favorite in B Central and a contender for the Non-Public Group II title in 2018.

The Panthers put together the program’s best season in a decade and fell only one game short of a perfect season. Point Boro won the Class B South division title for the third season in a row, the first time it’s done that since 1977-1979, and its 11 wins were the program’s most since 2005. The Panthers rallied to defeat Lakewood, 35-28, in in Week 6 in a game that essentially decided the division championship, and the Panthers also had a 13-3 win over a Monmouth Regional team spent two weeks ranked in the top 10. Their biggest win came in the Central Jersey Group II semifinals when they took down defending champion Manasquan with a thorough 27-6 victory. Their season ended with a 20-13 loss to Hillside in the sectional championship game, however. Point Boro’s triple-option offense put up an average of 32.5 points per game, No. 7 in the Shore, led by senior quarterback James Fara and his 1,628 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns. Fara also threw for 611 yards and seven touchdowns. Senior running back Brandon Cipriano ran for 825 yards and 12 touchdowns and caught 25 passes for 451 yards and five touchdowns. Junior linebacker Garrett Romer made 107 tackles to lead a defense that was fourth in the Shore allowing 12.9 points per game. Most of the Panthers’ top players are seniors so the challenge in 2018 will be to rebuild on the fly and defend their division title.

Brick Memorial (7-3)
After much debate for the 10th and final spot in the rankings we settled on the Mustangs, who won seven games and claimed a share of the Class A South division title. Following a season-opening loss to rival Brick, the Mustangs won six games in a row to earn the No. 2 seed in the Central Jersey Group IV playoffs. During the winning streak Brick Memorial beat Sayreville, 22-21 in double overtime, and topped co-division champ Central, 21-7. Brick Memorial also had a 35-14 regular-season loss to Central Jersey Group V champion South Brunswick. The Mustangs defeated Jackson Memorial, 27-21, in Week 9 to clinch their share of the division crown, but fell to the Jaguars the following week in the first round of the playoffs. Senior running back Tony Thorpe led a Mustangs offense that averaged 25.8 points per game by rushing for 1,372 yards and 14 touchdowns. Junior quarterback Tyler Sindel added 618 yards rushing and seven touchdowns and senior running back Blaine Netterman ran for 602 yards and eight touchdowns. Senior linebacker Grant McKelvey led the defense with 101 tackles while Netterman made 79 stops from his safety position. Brick Memorial graduates Thorpe, the program’s all-time leading rusher and scorer, along with Netterman, McKelvey and lineman Joe Castellano, but returns Sindel, linebackers Najiere Hutchinson and Alex Vonderlinden, lineman Jamison Whaley and running backs Ja Billingsley and Jeff Lavarin. school football history. The next few paragraphs will make it easy to see why Worthy was our unanimous selection as inaugural Shore Conference MVP. Worthy set several Shore Conference and state records this season, led by breaking the state single-season moder n rushing record with 2,860 yards to eclipse the mark of 2,815 set last season by Salem’s Jonathan Taylor, who is currently the starting running back for the University of Wisconsin as a true freshman. Worthy ran for 41 touchdowns, which would have been the Shore Conference record if not for the 46 rushing touchdowns scored by the SSN Offensive Player of the Year, Manalapan running back Naim Mayfield.

T his season Shore Sports Network is handing out its first-
ever Shore Conference football Most Valuable Player award, and what better player to receive such an honor than one who accomplished things that had never been done in the history of New Jersey high school football. Freehold quarterback Ashante Worthy put together a legendary season in 2017, turning the Shore Conference and state record books into his autobiography with the single greatest statistical season in New Jersey high

Those numbers alone make for an incredible season, but the fact Worthy was also second in the Shore in passing yards brings it all to a level that is almost unfathomable. Worthy threw for 2,106 yards and 20 touchdowns with a 70 percent completion rate, becoming the first player in state history to rush and throw for 2,000 yards each in a single season. His 4,966 combined yards shattered the previous record of 4,150 set by Old Tappan quarterback Devin Fuller in 2010. His 61 combined touchdowns between rushing and passing also set a state single-season record and surpassed the 55 touchdowns by Pennsville quarterback Dylan Cummings in 2013. Additionally, Worthy set the Shore Conference record for combined yards in a single game when he erupted for 635 yards and scored seven touchdowns in a 51-34 win over Nottingham in the first round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV playoffs. He ran for 419 yards and seven touchdowns on 32 carries and threw for 216 yards that after noon. He already owns the Shore Conference single-game rushing record with 465 set in a 2016 playoff win over Pennsauken. Diving deeper into the absurdity of Worthy’s offensive numbers, he had a ridiculous 550 offensive touches this season with 345 carries and 205 passing attempts. In a 27-20 win over Long Branch in Week 9 Worthy had 72 touches with 50 carries for 253 yards and 22 passing attempts for 252 yards. Worthy also had a 624-yard game against Howell when he ran for 338 yards and threw for 286. He had over 240 combined yards in every game, went over 300 combined yards nine times, over 400 seven times, over 500 three times and had two games of over 600 combined yards. Freehold’s offense is unique in that it uses an

empty backfield look nearly 100 percent of the time. Worthy is the quarterback but is essentially the Colonials’ running back, as well. His skill set as a running back and his ability to throw the ball downfield led Freehold coach Dave Ellis to switch to the offense four games into the 2016 season. Worthy refined his passing game during the offseason and the result was an unbelievable and record-setting season. Worthy was also Freehold’s punter and a good one at that. His mere presence and ability to tur n any punt into a fake made life a nightmare for opposing special teams coaches. If it wasn’t for his massive workload on offense he would have played defense too. He was used sparingly at linebacker and defensive back, but when he was he made an impact. He had two interceptions in a 35-28 win over Brick in the Central Jersey Group IV semifinals and made some big plays in the sectional final against Long Branch. Freehold started the season 1-3 with losses to Howell and Manalapan and a forfeit loss to Freehold Township (a 46-20 win on the field) after the Colonials self-reported using an ineligible player. They rebounded to win seven straight games and advance to the Central Jersey Group IV sectional final against Long Branch. The Green Wave ended Freehold’s hope for a state title with a dramatic 43-42 overtime victory on a successful 2-point conversion, but Worthy was sensational in his final high school game with 271 yards rushing and six touchdowns on 39 carries and 141 yards passing. Worthy saw playing time as a
freshman running back and took over as the starting running back as a sophomore. The position change to quarterback as a junior changed the course of his career and unlocked the potential of one of the greatest players in Shore Conference history. He finished his career with 6,400 yards rushing, 2,963 yards passing, 826 return yards and 403 receiving yards for a staggering 10,592 all-purpose yards. He scored 119 touchdowns and added four interceptions on defense. His 6,400 yards rushing is No. 2 in Shore Conference history behind Keyport’s Ken Cattouse, who had 6,676 yards in the early 2000s, and ahead of Middletown South legend and NFL first-round draft pick Knowshon Moreno. Worthy is hoping his legendary senior season and improved work in the classroom will land him an FBS or FCS offer. He’s on the right track as Rutgers has reportedly re-opened its recruitment of him. Records have been falling at a steady rate over the last few seasons in the Shore Conference, but it’s hard to imagine anyone coming close to what Worthy did. His 2017 season will go down in history as one of the greatest athletic feats, regardless of sport, in state history.

The Shore Sports Network Offensive Player of the Year, Mayfield has the greatest statistical season ever by a Shore Conference running back and one of the best in state history to help the Braves win the Class A North division title, finish 11-1 and reach the Central Jersey Group V championship game. Mayfield ran for 2,681 yards on an average of 13.2 yards per carry and set Shore Conference and state records by scoring 48 touchdowns (46 rushing) and 282 points.
RB – Peter Lucas, Sr., Rumson-Fair Haven
In his first and only year as Rumson’s starting running back, Lucas set the school record for rushing yards and touchdowns by rushing for 2,196 yards and 31 touchdowns (33 total) on an average of 9.9 yards per carry to help Rumson go 10-2 and reach a fifth straight sectional championship game. Lucas, who was selected as the Class A Central Offensive Player of the Year, ran for over 200 yards in six of 11 games, including a careerhigh 299 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Monmouth Regional. Also a standout lacrosse player, Lucas is committed to High Point University for lacrosse.
RB — Zack Bair, Sr., Red Bank Catholic
An ankle injury limited Bair’s season to seven games, but for sixplus weeks he was one of the most electric players in the Shore for an RBC offense that averaged 39.8 points per game to rank No. 3 in the conference. Bair ran for 1,087 yards and 15 touchdowns on a conferencebest 13.8 yards per carry and added a receiving touchdown, a punt return touchdown and a kickoff return for a touchdown. Bair ran for over 100 yards in five of seven games with one of the other two being when he was injured against St. John Vianney and the other being a three-carry, 97-yard performance in a win over Colonia. Bair ran for a career-high 244 yards in a win over Long Branch and ran for 232 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries in a win over Wall. His play helped RBC go 8-2 and win the Class B North division title. A Class B North all-division pick by the coaches, Bair is committed to Dartmouth University.
WR — Naseim Brantley, Sr., Howell
Among the most dynamic players in the Shore, Brantley excelled on offense, defense and special teams with 20 total touchdowns to help the Rebels go 9-2 and reach the South Jersey Group V semifinals. Brantley caught 48 passes for 785 yards and tied for the conference lead with 13 touchdown catches. He also ran for two touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass. At defensive back, Brantley made 29 tackles with three interceptions, two forced fumbles and an interception return for a touchdown. As a kick returner, Brantley had two kickoff returns for touchdowns and a punt return for a score. He had four 100-yard games, including a 10-catch, 135-yard, twotouchdown game against Lenape in the state playoffs and making eight receptions for 101 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Middletown North. A Class A North all-division selection by the coaches, Brantley holds offers from Navy, Monmouth, Bucknell, Sacred Heart and Bryant.

WR — Jyheir Jones, Sr., Lakewood
OL — Justin Johnson, Sr., Rumson-Fair Haven
Jones had a fantastic season for the Piners by leading the Shore Conference in receptions, tying for the lead in touchdown catches and finishing second in yards to help Lakewood reach the South Jersey Group III semifinals after a 1-3 start. Jones caught 66 passes for 954 yards and 13 touchdowns while also hauling in five 2point conversion passes. He also excelled on defense with 83 tackles and three interceptions, including one interception return for a touchdown. Jones as a Class B South all-division selection by the coaches.
WR — T.J. Fosque, Sr., Long Branch
Fosque emerged as one of the Shore Conference’s top wideouts to help lead the Green Wave to the Central Jersey Group IV championship and a 9-3 record. Fosque caught 37 passes for 704 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 19 yards per reception. He opened his season with a bang by catching six passes for 178 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Manasquan. A Class B Central all-division selection by the coaches, Fosque is committed to Monmouth University.
Johnson was the top lineman for a Bulldogs team that was No. 6 in the Shore at 35.7 points per game. Rumson had the Shore’s thirdleading rusher, Peter Lucas, who set a school record with 2,196 yards and 33 total touchdowns. Rumson rushed for 3,167 yards and 49 touchdowns on an average of 8.7 yards per carry. A Class A Central all-division selection by the coaches, Johnson is verbally committed to Wesleyan University.
OL — Michael Griggs, Sr., Red Bank Catholic
The top lineman for a Caseys offense that averaged 39.8 points per game, Griggs helped the Caseys go 8-2 and win the Class B North division title. His blocking paved the way for RBC to rush for 2,450 yards and 35 touchdowns on an average of 10.5 yards per carry, and for junior quarterback Steve Lubischer to throw for 1,810 yards and 18 touchdowns. An all-Class B North pick by the coaches, Griggs is committed to Colgate University.
OL — Paul Liseno, Jr., St. John Vianney
TE — Sean Morris, Jr., Barnegat
Liseno transferred from Keansburg to St. John Vianney prior to the season and emerged as the Lancers’ top lineman on a standout unit that paved the way for the No. 1 offense in the Shore. Liseno, who was a Class A Central all-division selection, helped the Lancers average 43.7 points and 411 yards per game. St. John Vianney rushed for 3,354 yards as a team with an average of 8.3 yards per rush. Liseno also played along the defensive line and recorded 27 tackles with four hits for a loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.
Morris had a breakout season on both sides of the ball to emerge as one of the top juniors in the Shore Conference. Morris caught 38 passes for 671 yards and eight touchdowns for an average of 17.7 yards per reception. He had two 100-yard games, including a season-high 155 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Manchester. He also had five catches for 106 yards and a touchdown against Lacey. Morris was also an impact player at defensive end where he recorded 41 tackles, 15 of which came for a loss, along with 3.5 sacks, 14 hurries, two interceptions including one pick-six, three forced fumbles and two safeties. A Class B South all-division selection by the coaches, Morris has generated interest from FBS and FCS programs and currently holds an offer from Bucknell.
OL — Trevor Radosevich, Sr., Manalapan
An anchor up front for the No. 2 offense in the Shore, Radosevich helped the Braves go 11-1, win the Class A North division title and reach the Central Jersey Group V championship game. Manalapan’s offense averaged 42.4 points and 410 yards per game, including senior running back Naim Mayfield rushing for 2,681 yards and 46 touchdowns. Mayfield’s rushing total is the second highest in Shore Conference history and his 48 total touchdowns and 282 points this season set state records. Radosevich was selected to the Class A North all-division team by the coaches. He currently has a scholarship offer from Colgate.

OL — Joe Hurle, Sr., Jackson Memorial
A standout since his earning the starting job as a sophomore, Hurle’s play up front helped the Jaguars reach the Central Jersey Group IV semifinals despite having several new starters on offense. Hurle was also an impact player on defense with 61 tackles, six sacks and five tackles for a loss for a unit that was No. 6 in the Shore allowing 14.3 points per game. A Class A South all-division selection, Hurle has received FCS and FBS interest with.
UT — Eddie Morales, Sr., Howell
A great leader who helped the Rebels to their best season in nearly a decade, Morales led the Shore Conference in passing with 2,156 yards and 24 touchdowns with a 70 percent completion rate. He also ran for a team-high 725 yards and 10 touchdowns to power Howell to a 9-2 record and a trip to the South Jersey Group V semifinals. Morales also had 20 tackles and two interceptions on defense and caught a touchdown pass. He threw for a season-high 330 yards with three touchdowns, ran for 160 yards and caught a touchdown against Manalapan, and had 314 yards and two touchdowns plus two rushing touchdowns against Lenape in the state playoffs. A Class A North all-division selection by the coaches, Morales holds an offer from Bryant University.
UT — James Fara, Sr., Point Boro
As the leader of Point Boro’s tripleoption offense, Fara had a great season to lead the Panthers to an 11-1 record, a third straight Class B South division title and a trip to a sectional final for the first time since 2007. Fara was fourth in the Shore in rushing with 1,628 yards and 24 touchdowns on an average of 7.8 yards per carry and also threw for 611 yards and seven touchdowns with a 60 percent completion rate. Point Boro had the No. 7 offense in the Shore averaging 32.5 points per game. The Class B South Offensive Player of the Year, Fara has received interest from several FCS programs.
K — Devon Johnson, Sr., Monmouth
Johnson was a key member of a Falcons squad that turned in one of the best seasons in program history to rebound from a 2-8 season to go 7-4 and reach the playoffs for the third time. Johnson converted on 28 of 28 extra points and also went 4-for-7 on field goals with a long of 41 yards. As Monmouth’s punter Johnson averaged 35 yards per punt with 12 punts inside the 20yard line and six punts inside the 10-yard line. He was also the Falcons’ leading receiver with 18 catches for 485 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 26.9 yards per reception. Johnson was a Class A Central all-division selection at wide receiver.

DL — Nick Densieski, Sr., St. John Vianney

DL – Jake Krellin, Sr., Middletown South
A two-time first-team All-Shore selection, Krellin (No. 8 in blue above) was a terror off the edge for the Eagles with 84 tackles, including 26 tackles for a loss, plus 11 sacks, 18 hurries, four pass deflections, an interception, four forced fumbles and one blocked punt. It was a down year for the Eagles, who went 5-5 and lost in the first round of the Central Jersey Group IV playoffs, but their defense, led by Krellin, was a top-11 unit and kept them in many games. Krellin was selected as the Class B North Defensive Player of the Year.
DL — Josh Lezin, Sr., Lakewood
Lezin was once again a nearly-unstoppable force along the Piners defensive line to help them reach the playoffs for the sixth straight season and advance to the South Jersey Group III semifinals. Lezin basically lived in the opponents’ backfield with 86 tackles, including an astounding 44 tackles for a loss, and 11 sacks. He was a nightmare for opposing special teams units, as well, with three blocked extra points, three blocked punts and one blocked field goal. He also occasionally lined up tight end and had one touchdown catch and two 2-point conversion catches. The Class B South Defensive Player of the Year, Lezin has generated interest from FBS and FCS programs.
The most productive pass-rusher in the Shore Conference over the last two seasons, Densieski recorded 12 sacks for a St. John Vianney team that finished 10-1, won the Class A Central division title for the fourth year in a row, extended its Shore Conference winning streak to 38 games and reached the Non-Public Group III semifinals. He also had 48 tackles (32 solo) with nine hits behind the line of scrimmage, a fumble return for a touchdown and a forced fumble. He had a season-high three sacks in a 35-17 win over Red Bank Catholic and had two sacks each in wins over Raritan, Red Bank and Monmouth, and two sacks against DePaul in the state semifinals. Densieski was also selected to the Class A Central all-division team.
DL — Kaymar Mimes, Sr., Long Branch
Mimes (No. 89 at right) was a major part of a defense that helped Long Branch go 9-3 and win the Central Jersey Group IV sectional title. Mimes made 87 tackles and recorded 10 sacks for a unit that allowed 18 points per game and recorded two shutouts. Mimes had a career-high 16 tackles in a regular-season game versus Freehold and had 10 tackles and 2.5 sacks in a 28-3 win over Jackson Memorial in the CJ-IV semifinals. Mimes also had multiple sacks in wins over Middletown South and Ocean. As Long Branch’s starting tight end Mimes caught 17 passes for 175 yards and four touchdowns. A Class B North alldivision pick by the coaches, Mimes, who is the younger brother of former Michigan State star and current Oakland Raiders defensive lineman Shilique Calhoun, holds offers from Rutgers, Boston College, Temple and Wake Forest.

The Shore Sports Network Defensive Player of the Year, Buchanan was the Lancers’ leader on both sides of the ball to help the team go 10-1, win a fourth straight Class A Central division title and reach the Non-Public Group III state semifinals. Buchanan made 121 tackles with three sacks and an interception. Also SJV’s starting running back, Buchanan ran for 1,393 yards and 17 touchdowns on an average of 9.2 yards per carry.

He had doubledigit tackles in eight of 12 games, including a season-high 19 tackles in a win over Southern. He had 18 tackles against Old Bridge, 16 against Colts Neck and 14 each against Howell, Freehold and in the CJ-V final against South Brunswick. Pearce was also selected as the Class A North Defensive Player of the Year by the coaches.
LB — Keegan Woods, Jr., Rumson-Fair Haven
Woods led a Rumson defense that was No. 5 in the Shore (13.8 ppg) by making a school-record 155 tackles with four sacks an interception, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery to help the Bulldogs go 10-2 and reach their fifth straight sectional final. Woods had double-digit tackles in 11 of 12 games, including a season-high 18 in a win over Holmdel. He had 15 tackles against St. John Vianney, made 17 stops in a playoff win over Lawrence and had 16 tackles against Wall in the sectional semifinals. A Class A Central alldivision selection by the coaches, Woods leads a strong cast of returners for the Bulldogs next season.
LB — Sal Tardogno, Sr., Manalapan
Tardogno teamed with Pearce in the interior of Manalapan’s linebacking corps to form the top unit in the Shore for a defense that was the No. 1 unit in the Shore at 11.5 points per game. Tardogno made 114 tackles, recorded three sacks and broke up five passes to help the Braves go 11-1, win the Class A North division title and reach the Central Jersey Group V championship game. He made a season-high 20 tackles in a win over Southern and had 16 stops in a win over Old Bridge. He recorded 13 tackles with two hits for a loss against South Brunswick in the sectional final. Tardogno was a Class A North alldivision selection by the coaches.
DB — Symir Blacknall, Sr., Manalapan
Tasked with covering the opponent’s best receiver, Blacknall played a big role for a Manalapan defense that was No. 1 in the Shore allowing 11.5 points per game. His play helped the Braves go 11-1, win the Class A North division title and reach the Central Jersey Group V championship game. Blacknall had 31 tackles and 21 passes defended along with one interception and a forced fumble. He was also Manalapan’s leading receiver with 23 receptions for 511 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 22.5 yards per catch. Blacknall also ran for 111 yards and four touchdowns on an average of 9.3 yards per carry. A Class A North alldivision selection, Blacknall has a scholarship offer from New Hampshire.
LB — Tommy Pearce, Jr., Manalapan
A tackling machine who has started since the middle of his freshman year, Pearce had a phenomenal junior campaign to lead the Braves’ No. 1 ranked defense. Pearce was second in the Shore Conference with 143 tackles, 89 of which were solo stops, along with nine tackles for a

DB — Zyheir Jones, Sr., Lakewood
An injury in the preseason originally looked like it would end Jones’ senior season before it even began, but the dynamic playmaker for the Piners returned after missing just two games to have a marvelous season on both sides of the ball and lead Lakewood to the South Jersey Group III semifinals. Jones led the Shore with nine interceptions while making 66 tackles, recording four sacks and returning two interceptions for touchdowns. As Lakewood’s quarterback Jones passed and rushed for 1,000 yards each while accounting for 30 total touchdowns. Jones threw for 1,208 yards and 18 touchdowns and ran for 1,244 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also had seven 2-point conversion passes and six 2point conversion runs. Jones was also a Class B South all-division selection by the coaches.
DB — Matt Ansell, Sr., Red Bank Catholic
Playing like a heat-seeking missile from the back end of RBC’s defense, Ansell (making the tackle right) made 104 tackles and recorded five interceptions to help the Caseys go 82 and win the Class B North division title. Ansell was also a Class B North all-division selection by the coaches.
DB — Kevin Porch, Sr., Long Branch
The hard-hitting leader of Long Branch’s secondary, Porch helped the Green Wave go 9-3 and win the Central Jersey Group IV championship by making 59 tackles with two interceptions and one fumble recovery. He was at his best in the state final with a season-high 10 tackles in Long Branch’s 43-42 overtime win over Freehold. A Class B North all-division selection by the coaches.
UT — Cole Groschel, Jr., Brick
Groschel embodied the true definition of a utility player by making an impact at several different positions and carrying the Dragons through a stretch where they dealt with injuries to many starters on both sides of the ball. At defensive back, Groschel made 55 tackles and was tied for second in the Shore with five interceptions. He played quarterback, running back and wide receiver and accounted for 14 total touchdowns to help Brick reach the Central Jersey Group IV semifinals. Groschel ran for 746 yards and eight touchdowns and caught 34 passes for 451 yards and five touchdowns. He was also 8 of 16 passing for 106 yards and a touchdown. Additionally, Groschel was a Class A South all-division selection.
UT — Austin Dewise, Sr., Middletown North
Armed with the ability to wreck an opposing offense’s gameplan, Dewise (No. 11 above) was a disruptive force for the Lions despite facing constant doubleteams. He made 60 tackles with nine tackles for a loss, five sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two pass deflections and one blocked punt. He had a season-high 10 tackles in a game against Manasquan. Dewise was also Middletown North’s tight end and caught 20 passes for 425 yards and a touchdown, averaging 21.3 yards per catch. As the Lions’ punter Dewise averaged 34.5 yards per punt with two inside the 20-yard line. A Class B North all-division selection by the coaches.
P — David Gelb, Sr., Manalapan
Gelb averaged 35.8 yards per punt with two punts inside the 20-yard line and a long of 51 yards. He had few opportunities for punts or field goals thanks to a Manalapan offense that was No. 2 in the Shore averaging 42.4 points per game. Gelb did not attempt a field goal all season but was 67 for 69 on extra points. He also boomed 33 touchbacks out of 78 kickoffs. A Class A North all-division selection, Gelb holds an offer from Saint Anselm College.

oming off a tremendous junior season, expectations were big for Manalapan running back Naim Mayfield entering his senior year. Braves head coach Ed Gurrieri said in the preseason that, with another standout year, Mayfield had a chance to go down as the best running back in Manalapan history. Gurrieri was right in his assessment, but as it turned out the impact of Mayfield’s senior season reached way beyond the record book of his own school.

There are players with more tackles, sacks and interceptions than Buchanan, but even though his numbers are very good to understand his greatness you to see him in action. Buchanan played with a physical edge between the tackles and with enough athleticism to play sideline to sideline, blitz when needed and be effective in coverage. More than anything, though, Buchanan played his best when his team needed him most. During an Oct. 14 game with Rumson-Fair Haven at Rutgers U n i v e r s i t y, Buchanan was excellent with 10 tackles (seven solo) and a key sack late in the
game that helped the Lancers rally for a 31-28 overtime win that effectively clinched the A Central title. The following week St. John Vianney took on Red Bank Catholic in a marquee battle of the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the Shore, and Buchanan once again raised his level of play with 14 tackles (nine solo) and a clutch interception in the end zone that helped the Lancers to a n i m p r e s s i v e 3 5 - 1 7 v i c t o r y. On the offensive side of the ball, Buchanan was one of the top running back in the Shore Conference with 1,393 yards and 17 touchdowns. He had six 100-yard g a m e s , i n c l u d i n g a c a r e e r- h i g h 2 9 4 y a r d s o n 2 9 c a r r i e s in a 45-40 win over Camden Catholic in the first round of the NJSIAA Non-Public Group III playoffs. Buchanan also had 11 tackles against the Irish in an amazing twoway performance. B u c h a n a n w a s a l s o c l u t c h a s a r u n n e r i n S J V ’s b i g g e s t games, rushing for 115 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries in the win over Rumson and carrying the load against RBC with 27 carries for 242 yards and two touchdowns. Buchanan will continue his football career at the University of Delaware and will enter college football as one of St. John V i a n n e y ’s a l l - t i m e g r e a t s . W ith a veteran roster returning off a solid 2016

season there was plenty of promise surrounding Point Boro’s football team heading into this year. While the Panthers finished one win short of perfection, they made Friday night’s special at Al Saner Field by turning in the program’s best season in a decade. For his role in leading the Panthers to an 11-1 record, a division title and a trip to a sectional final, Point Boro head coach Matt Cilento has been selected as the 2017 Shore Sports Network Coach of the Year.
In his second season leading Point Boro, Cilento guided the Panthers to their most wins since 2005, their first championship game appearance since 2007 and the program’s third consecutive Class B South division title. The Panthers shared the title with Lakewood in 2015, but have gone 14-0 within B South over the past two years. It is the third time in program history Point Boro has won three straight division crowns and the first since doing it from 1977 to 1979. The Panthers had a top-10 offense and a top-10 defense in 2017. Led by senior quarterback James Fara, Point Boro and its triple-option attack was the No. 7 offense in the Shore Conference with an average of 32.5 points per game. Fara had a tremendous season to finish

fourth in the Shore in rushing with 1,628 yards and 24 touchdowns while also throwing for 611 yards and seven touchdowns. Senior running back Brandon Cipriano also had a great season after an injuryshortened junior year. Cipriano ran for 825 yards and 12 touchdowns on an average of 11.9 yards per carry as one of Point Boro’s slot backs, and was also the Panthers’ leading receiving with 25 catches for 451 yards and five touchdowns. Senior fullback Tanner Gordon battled through an injury all season but still managed to run for 708 yards and eight touchdowns. Before becoming Point Boro’s head coach in 2016 Cilento built some standout units as the Panthers’ defensive coordinator. With Cilento still running the defense this year, the Panthers finished as the Shore’s No. 4 defense in allowing just 12.9 points per game with one shutout. Point Boro allowed more than 20 points only once and held teams to seven points or less four times. Junior linebacker Garrett Romer led the Panthers with 107 tackles while junior defensive lineman Trent Livolsi had 65 tackles and senior safety Trevor McNamara had 59 stops. Gordon had a team-high four sacks and senior defensive back John Callander had three interceptions. Point Boro's first big moment of the season came in Week 2 when they blanked Lacey, 27-0. The Lions, who finished 73, were thought of as a challenger to Point Boro in the division race, but the Panthers dominated from start to finish to send a message to the rest of B South. In Week 4 the Panthers hosted a surprising Monmouth Regional team which had started the season 4-0. The battle of unbeatens drew a huge crowd to Al Saner Field and Point Boro delivered with a 13-3 victory. Two weeks later Point Boro faced its first true adversity of the season when Lakewood jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first half. The Panthers battled back to take a 21-20 lead and, after Lakewood went back in front, 28-21, Point Boro scored twice in the final two minutes to win a thriller, 35-28, and improve to 6-0. The Panthers won their next three games to enter the playoffs undefeated for the first time since 2005 and earned the No. 1 seed in the Central Jersey Group II playoffs. A 4112 first-round win over Raritan set the stage for a massive semifinal matchup against defending-champion Manasquan. That game had several layers of intrigue to it, starting obviously with the Panthers trying to unseat the reigning

champs to reach their first state final since 2007. The two teams were also Thanksgiving rivals for many years and the communities are situated across the Manasquan River from one another. Point Boro made a statement that Friday night with an impressive 27-6 win that propelled them into the Central Jersey Group II final. Cipriano had a career night with four touchdowns and the Panthers’ defense held down Manasquan until the Warriors punched in a late touchdown. The victory also helped raise the profile of Class B South, as well. B South teams have struggled to win marquee games outside of the division in recent years, but Point Boro bucked the trend against a Manasquan program that has a Shore Conferencerecord 12 sectional championships.
Perfection was not in the cards for Point Boro, however, as the Panthers fell to Hillside in the Central Jersey Group II championship game, 20-13. The Comets jumped out to a 20-0 lead and Point Boro didn’t find its offensive groove until late in the game. The Panthers rallied with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter but ran out of time to complete the comeback. While the state championship defeat was certainly disappointing, Cilento’s message to his team was to not let the one loss detract from the rest of the season. This Point Boro team was forged on friendships that go back to elementary school in their small town. Many teams preach having a “family” culture and Point Boro absolutely embodied that. And it wasn’t manufactured. It was obvious to see how much each player truly cared about their teammates. It’s clear Point Boro had a talented class of juniors during Cilento’s first year, and his ability to cultivate that talent and get them all playing at a high level as seniors was instrumental to Point Boro’s success in 2017. A constant coaching mantra is to maximize the potential of all the players on the team, and in a memorable year for Point Boro, Cilento did exactly that.

By taking the show on location each week we were able to often highlight schools from that geographical area and each week hosts Kevin Williams, Ed Sarluca and Bob Badders talked with multiple players and coaches. In many cases boosters and supporters of the featured schools turned out to show their support creating an exciting live atmosphere. We are very appreciative of River Rock, Margarita’s and Martell’s for not only hosting the weekly shows but going out of their way to make the hosts and guests feel welcome each week. Long Branch WindMill Hosts Green Wave State Championship Football Team
I
n recognition of their dedication, hard work and winning season, the entire Long Branch High School football team was invited by WindMill owners Rena Levine-Levy and Steven Levine for a celebratory lunch to honor the Central Jersey Group IV champions. Long Branch captured its first state title since 1999 by defeating Freehold, 43-42 in overtime, in the Central Jersey Group IV championship game on Dec. 2 at Rutgers University
“It just seemed they deserved a special time to relax together to celebrate their win,” Steven Levine said. “What better place than in our North Long Branch WindMill? The players, as well as their coaches and support members, each had an opportunity to order whatever they wanted from the WindMill menu. From the looks on their faces once they ordered and began to eat, the idea really was a hit.
