WOBM Christmas Classic Tip-Off Brunch
A
s it’s been for the last 20 yers, the WOBM Christmas Classic week began on December 14th with a Tipoff Brunch hosted by the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center in Toms River. More than 270 players, coaches, officials and special guests gathered inside the main ballroom for what has Christams Classic founder/director become one of the highlights Kevin Williams of the tournament. Hungry student-athletes made return trips to the buffet line which featured a delicious breakfast cooked-up and served by the Clarion’s award-winning staff. The Clarion has been a gracious supporter of the WOBM Christmas Classic by sponsoring and hosting the opening event which allows players to come together before they step on the court at the Pine Belt Arena in Toms River to battle for the prestigious title which concludes with the championship games on Wednesday, December 30th.
Christmas Classic and will work with an outstanding group of athletic trainers including Dan Chrashewsky (TR South) and Stacy White (Middletown South) who were in attendance.
The $10,000 half court shot returns thanks to the generosity of the Pine Belt Family of Dealerships with locations in Toms River, Lakewood and Keyport. Always one of the most exciting parts of the tournament registration is open until December 21 (noon) with all the details available at wobm.com or Dr. Chopra of Seaview shoresportsnetwork.com. Williams is Orthopaedic & Medical Associates thrilled to have the Pine Belt group as part of this year’s tournament and hopes they will get a chance to hand out a $10,000 check on December 30th. Among the other new sponsors this year is Carl’s Fencing, Decking and Home Improvements with the support of the DelPizzo Family welcomed with open arms.
Each year there is a guest speaker and it will be hard for anyone to top the words delivered by Rutgers wrestling coach Scott Goodale….yes I know he’s a wrestling guy. However his talk about three keys to success (socially, academically and athletically) resonated with the student-athletes, their coaches and the others in attendance.
As he does annually founder/director Kevin Williams hosted the morning event which featured all 32 teams and talked about the growth of what’s become one of the premier holiday tournaments in all of New Jersey. As only he can the WOBM radio personality and Director of the Shore Sports Network expressed his appreciation for the eighteen sponsors who contribute in some fashion especially RWJ Barnabas Health who once again is the presenting sponsor. Two of those sponsors date back to the first WOBM Christmas Classic in 1984 as The Causeway Family of Dealerships returns as the sponsor of the more than 700 tee shirts that will be distributed to players, coaches, staff, etc. They will also continue to provide the Boys MVP award which the Wintrode Family has done for all 33 years.
Ocean Trophies also goes back to year one with Scott Ritchie donating some of the hardware and doing his usual great job with the large array of trophies and plaques awarded.
Four new girls’ teams have joined the field this year with Neptune, Ewing, Red Bank Regional and Sayreville replacing Manasquan, Middletown South, Jackson Memorial and Red Bank Catholic who have opted out and made other holiday plans. Also welcomed to the tournament were first-year head coaches Tyler Schmelz (RBC) and Dana Cerullo (Central) whose husband Chris was the MVP in 2000.

Among those to take the podium were Toms River Regional Schools Superintendent David Healey who welcomed the teams to the Pine Belt Arena for the tournament. Dr. Vinay Chopra from Seaview Orthopaedic & Medical Associates wished everyone a healthy tournament and implored athletes to let someone know if they suffer any kind of injury. They are the official team doctors for the WOBM
A former teacher and coach at his alma mater (Jackson Memorial) it’s easy to understand how he has turned the Rutgers wrestling program around and there is no doubt greater success to come in the future. Goodale, who lives in Toms River, left an impression that will not soon be forgotten.
Williams announced this year’s recipients of the academic scholarship awards made possible by RWJ Barnabas Health. The awards are based on the academic performance of boys and girls who played in the 2015 WOBM CC and are now college freshman. Welcome to the 33rd annual WOBM Christmas Classic, hosted by Townsquare Media,
the Shore Sports Network, WOBM FM/AM and the Toms River Regional School District. Once again 32 varsity basketball teams (16 boys/16 girls) will be participating and playing 52 games over seven days in the Pine Belt Arena. The tournament was established in 1984 as a replacement for the Southern Regional Roundball Festival and began with eight boys teams playing over three days at Ocean County College. It has grown into one of the largest holiday basketball tournaments in New Jersey and has featured 32 teams since moving to the Pine Belt Arena in 2003. Special thanks to the Toms River School District and Board of Education for hosting the event and providing such an outstanding facility for the participants.

hen the WOBM Christmas Classic was first launched in 1984 it was an eight-team boy’s tournament only. A replacement to the Southern Regional Roundball Festival, the Below is a picture from the coaches seeding meeting/dinner in 1986, inaugural WOBM featured Brick, Central, Manchester, Donovan Catholic (then Monsignor Donovan), Point Boro, a year when nine teams participated. North Boys, Neptune Girls Garner Top Seeds
T
he Toms River North boys and Neptune girls enter the WOBM Christmas Classic as the top seeds following voting by all of the tournament coaches during a dinner meeting at The Villa/Office Restaurant & Lounge in Toms River on December 11th.
The Mariners are seeking their third consecutive appearance in the championship game, having lost to Manasquan last year following a championship run in 2014. Coach Rory Caswell returns a solid group of seniors led by Jaden Rhoden, Darrion Carrington, Mike Nyisztor and Mike Husni who will look to win it all on their home court. North’s biggest challenge is expected to come from Manasquan, Freehold Township and Marlboro but history says watch out for the lower seeds.
This is the first appearance by the Neptune girls in the tournament but that did not stop rival coaches from tabbing them as the team to beat. John Brown’s Scarlet Fliers are led by one of the state’s top players in Desire Allen along with fellow seniors Brianna Love and Alexis Bennett. With all five starters back Sayreville could provide the biggest threat to Neptune alone with Ewing and Manchester who round out the top four.

He was a 40-year member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials Shore Board 194, and also was a member of the Shore Soccer Officials Association for more than 20 years. ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
The WOBM CHRISTMAS CLASSIC awards scholarships to graduated seniors based on their academic performance while in high school. Once again through the support of RWJ Barnabas Health we are able to honor six student-athletes who played in the 2015 tournament and are now college freshman. The Pine Belt Family of Dealerships with locations in Toms River, Lakewood and Keyport is proud to sponsor this year’s $10,000 half court shot which has become a highlight of the tournament.
Official rules and registration are available at shoresportsnetwork.com and wobm.com through noon on December 21st. Five qualifiers will be randomly selected from all the entries and must be present at the boy’s championship game on Friday, December 30th where one of them will have the opportunity to sink a half-court shot and win $10,000. That finalist will automatically win $500 while the other four will walk away with a $100 gift certificate from the Crab’s Claw Inn, 601 Grand Central Avenue, Lavallette.
Remember the deadline to enter is Wednesday, December 21st at noon. The five qualifiers will be contacted that day by telephone. The Pine Belt Family of Dealerships are longtime supporters of high school sports and awards college scholarships as part of the annual Shore Conference Sportsmanship Awards program in May at the Pine Belt Arena.
