Welcome to the 36
th
annual WOBM CHRISTMAS CLASSIC, hosted by Townsquare Media, the Shore Sports Network, WOBM FM/AM and the Toms River Regional School District. Once again, 32 varsity basketball teams (16 boys/16 girls) will be participating and playing 52 games over seven days at the RWJBarnabas Health Arena. The tournament was established in 1984 as a replacement for the Southern Regional Roundball Festival and began with eight boys teams playing over three days at Ocean County College. The girls division was added in 1994 and the tournament moved to the campus of Toms River High School North in 2003. Today, the WOBM Christmas Classic is one of the largest holiday basketball tournaments in New Jersey. Special thanks to the Toms River School District and Board of Education for hosting the event and providing such an outstanding facility for the participants.

A member of the Choice Hotels branch, the Clarion has been a gracious supporter of the WOBM Classic since 1995 by sponsoring the hosting the opening event which allows the 32 participating teams to come together before they step on the court to battle for the championship. As always General Manager Bob Van Bochove and Banquet Manager Kevin Hanfield went out of their way to make sure everyone has plenty of eat and that includes about 120 pounds of bacon
Christams Classic founder/director Kevin Williams
As he does each year Tournament Founder/Director Kevin Williams served as Master of Ceremonies and host of the morning event and spent several minutes thanking the near two dozen sponsors who help make the event possible. Topping that list is InVision EyeCare of Lakewood & Eatontown as for the second straight year they are the presenting sponsor of the tournament. Headed up by Dr. Edward Hedaya, who founded InVision and Dr. Barry Edison their mission remains the same: To deliver outstanding care in a comfortable, educational and nurturing environment.
Among those to speak at the breakfast was Patrick Ahearn, the Chief Executive Officer at Community Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health Facility. With over 40 years of experience in the health care field, Ahearn is recognized as a transformational leader and came to CMC in 2016. The father of four grown children who were all active in sports, he is no stranger to watching his kids compete and he also Patrick Ahearn, the Chief Executive Officer at Community Medical Center, coached both basketball and soccer. an RWJBarnabas Health Facility Ahearn said Community Medical Center is proud to be a sponsor of the tournament, especially because they provide the academic scholarships given each year. Those awards are based on the academic performance of boys and girls who played in the tournament the previous year and are now college freshman. A total of eight (4 girls and 4 boys) will receive $500 awards from Community Medical Center representatives at halftime of the respective championship games on December 30. As they have since the WOBM Classic started in 1984 the Causeway Family of Dealerships in Manahawkin is once again a big part by sponsoring tee-shirts for all the players and coaches and providing many of the awards that will be given out to the top teams and players. Those awards will be created by Ocean Trophies of Lanoka Harbor who like Causeway has been a supporter for all 36 years and donates the two championship trophies. Since 1997 the WOBM Christmas Classic salutes a person or organization that has contributed to its efforts at presenting a first-class event. The Jim Ruhnke Contribution Award is named after the former Southern Regional coach who helped Williams establish the WOBM Classic and provided invaluable advice and input in those early years. This year’s recipient is Jim Hibbs, who for most of the past 20 years has been the official scorekeeper working as many as eight games in a day. 44 of the 52 games in this year’s tournament will be held inside the RWJBarnabas Health Arena and Hibbs will keep score for all of them. He is an integral part of the staff that in many cases gives up much of the holiday season to help coordinate and run the basketball tournament. Among others to speak at the Tip-Off Brunch were Dr. David Junkin, a sports medicine specialist at Seaview Orthopaedics who are the official team doctors of the Classic and also provide the Athletic Trainers who work the event. Toms River Regional Schools Superintendent David Healey welcomed those in attendance and expressed excitement that the school district will once again host the tournament which features so many outstanding teams and players. The field of 32 teams for the WOBM Classic is similar to what it’s been in recent years with two exceptions. On the boys side defending state sectional champion Wall replaces St. Rose while in the girls division Manasquan is back after a brief hiatus and fills the spot vacated by Sayreville. This year’s tournament features the deepest boys field ever with Manasquan, Toms River North, Wall, Middletown South, Red Bank Catholic (defending champion) and Marlboro expected to be among the shore’s top teams. On the girls side Manchester, with two-time MVP Destiny Adams, is seeking to become just the fifth team in the history of the tournament to win three straight titles. They should be tested by Marlboro, Red Bank Regional and Manasquan among others.

T
BOYS The Warriors, who finished third in 2018, are seeking their third championship under Coach Andrew Bilodeau, who also won the tournament with Toms River North in 2007. Manasquan returns a trio of starters from last year’s 29-4 squad in Alex Galvan, Ben Roy and Kieran Flanagan. There will be plenty of challengers in the top-heavy field including Toms River North, Wall, Middletown South and defending champion Red Bank Catholic.
girlS Coming off a season in which they won the Group 2 title for the first time in school history and advanced to the semifinals of the Tournament of Champions, Manchester was the unanimous choice as the top seed on the girl’s side as they seek their third straight WOBM crown. The Hawks return a trio of starters in two-time MVP Destiny Adams along with Kamari Reynolds and Serenity Anderson but will have to deal with contenders like Marlboro, Red Bank and Manasquan.

The WOBM CHRISTMAS CLASSIC awards scholarships to graduated seniors based on their academic performance while in high school. Once again through the support of RWJBarnabas Health/Community Medical Center we are able to honor eight student-athletes who played in the 2018 tournament and are now college freshman. All of them will receive $500 to help with their second semester college costs and this brings the total to over $90,000 awarded through scholarships. 2019 Caitlin Carroll Meghan Murray Jenna Paul Riley Sexton Nick Duncsak Nicholas Lugo Seth Meisner Daniel Mitchinson
