B.J. The Conqueror

he B.J. Clagon everyone has come to know over the past four years is trademarked by his aggression, relentlessness and an ability to never let the situation get the best of him on the mat.

Heilmann had a cradle locked in just after the buzzer sounded - to win his second state championship and conclude his career with a 155-6 record. “He was working his armbars on me, and I tried to relax and get out,” Clagon said. “I loosened my arms, got free, took him down and won the match. I was a little nervous and didn’t open up as much as I wanted to. I definitely could have wrestled better, but I

were quite impressive,” Laycock recalled. “But you see a lot of good kids in the youth circuit, and they get to high school and peak early and never really manage to do anything. When he was a freshman and he started progressing you could see he had things normal kids don’t have, and things that are hard to teach.”

Clagon’s athleticism, strength and explosiveness make him good, but it’s the subtle details that put him in another class.

“Those little angles that make finishing easier, little things that you can show a kid but he just has a natural feel for,” Laycock said. “And his balance is incredible and the way he manages to know where his body is at every position, I can’t even explain it.”

“I saw a lot of firsts tonight,” said Toms River South head coach Ron Laycock. “I had never seen B.J. wrestle tight before.”

As a freshman Clagon racked up 34 wins to just five losses on his way to finishing seventh in the state tournament at 125 pounds. He made a huge jump his sophomore season, ripping off 36 straight wins to start the season before losing 4-2 to West Essex’s Anthony Perrotti in the 130-pound state final. It was a feeling Clagon didn’t want to experience again, and he made sure it never happened.

Continued from page 25 “That loss made me realize I had to get my conditioning up and get in the weight room because he was stronger than me,” Clagon said. “I realized what I had to do.”

Clagon will go down as one of the Shore Conference’s all-time greats. He won two state titles, was a three-time finalist, won three Region VI titles and four District 24 titles. His 155 career wins are second all-time in the Shore Conference behind Raritan’s Dan Seidenberg at 158.

“It feels great and I’m pretty happy that I am known as one of the best now,” Clagon said. “It makes me feel accomplished.” This season was the second straight Toms River South had two finalists. Senior Kevin Corrigan reached the 113pound state final by avenging his only loss of the season in the semifinals when he beat Jefferson’s Bryan Damon, 4-3 in the ultimate tiebreaker. His quest for a state title was halted by Don Bosco Prep junior Luis Gonzalez, 5-4.

hips so it was hard to finish. I had to get my hips under me and cut the corner as opposed to cracking down. It’s a little fix, but that’s what happens.”

Corrigan finished this season with a 39-2 record and concluded his storied career with 138 wins, three District 24, three Region VI titles and two state medals. He and Clagon are the No. 1 and No. 2 winningest wrestlers in program history, and they both joined legendary figure Jeff Parker as the only Toms River South wrestlers to win three region championships. “I’m proud, but not satisfied because I didn’t get that championship,” Corrigan said. “But I’m definitely proud of myself because I accomplished a bunch of great things. Wrestling is a great sport, and it has done so much for me. It’s awesome to be here in Atlantic City.”

In the four-year span from the time Clagon and Corrigan entered the program the Indians have made a steady climb up the ranks of the Shore Conference. This season they claimed a share of the Class A South title, advanced to the Shore Conference Tournament final for the first time since 1978, defeated Southern Regional and Brick Memorial in the same season for the first time ever and claimed their first sectional title by topping Timber Creek in South Jersey Group III. Clagon and Corrigan were the driving forces behind the program’s rise to elite status.

TRS senior Kevin Corrigan finished second in the state at 113 pounds

“Obviously it’s been great,” Laycock said. “You look at Brick Memorial, Jackson and Southern and they’re in the top 10 in the state every single year. We’ve been competitive but we haven’t been able to beat them. To get to that level, have kids at the state level, win a sectional title; it got the whole school pumped up and talking about wrestling, and that’s important for building a program.”

The tattoo across Clagon’s chest of the Latin phrase ‘veni, vidi, vici’ says it all.

“That was a big momentum boost for me,” Corrigan said.

Gonzalez escaped in the second period and then scored another takedown to bring a 5-3 lead into the third. Corrigan escaped to pull within one in the third period and was in deep on two shots in the final minute, but Gonzalez was able to scramble and hold him off each time for his first state title.

“I definitely felt like I got in deep, but that’s my weakside high-crotch so it’s not as natural a finish for me,” Corrigan explained. “And he has really heavy

because he can affect wins and losses. Most athletes with autism on the level of Starego are inserted into the game when the outcome is not in doubt, but Starego was a difference-maker for the Green Dragons last year.

T

he situation involving the eligibility of Brick senior placekicker Anthony Starego may be unprecedented in New Jersey high school athletics, and maybe even the country.

He also went 4-for-4 on extra points in a 28-27 win over Toms River East and hit a field goal that nearly beat Lacey before the Lions scored a touchdown on the final play of the game. Having covered the ultra-competitive Shore Conference football scene for 15 years, I can tell you that if Anthony, who I have seen make 45-yard field goals in practice, hit a long field goal to win a game, the opposing coach would almost surely be

Starego’s parents have argued that football has helped him greatly with his condition and in improving inside and outside of school while also serving as an inspiration to other autistic athletes. He will be attending Brick until he is 21 years old, according to his father, to take advantage of the classes for special needs students.

To me, the most intriguing part of it is that an athlete with autism is viewed as someone who gives a team a competitive advantage by being on the field. I don’t think I’ve ever heard “the autistic player is too good” argument used before. Starego’s greatest triumph, the field goal against Toms River North, essentially was used as proof as to why he should not be allowed to play another year,

Talking to Ray Starego, Anthony’s father, more than anything he wanted Anthony to return to give hope to parents of younger children with autism. When Anthony first started kicking in Pop Warner, he couldn’t reach the end zone from the 10-yard line.

“I have talked to parents of 7-year-olds with autism who say, ‘Well, my son would never be able to do what Anthony has done,’’’ Ray said. “I try to tell them that I would have thought the same exact thing when Anthony was their son’s age. They just need to see that their children are capable of a lot more than they think.’’

That’s what makes this decision so tough to wrestle with. On the one hand, the NJSIAA makes some valid points in its reasoning for denying the appeal. On the other hand, this is such an inspiring story and sports have meant so much to Anthony’s development. Plus, it’s not like he is a quarterback or someone who could really dominate a game.

Starego, who has autism, made national headlines in October when he booted a game-winning, 22-yard field goal with 21 seconds left in an upset of Toms River North on his first varsity field goal attempt. On March 13, the NJSIAA denied his parents’ request that he receive a fifth year of eligibility for three reasons – he used up all his eligibility allowed by NJSIAA rule, his return would give Brick a competitive advantage next season, and he would be taking a spot away from another player bound by the regular eligibility rules. Starego used up his eight semesters of being able to participate in athletics by NJSIAA rule, having played on the sub-varsity level for three years and then on varsity this past season. He also will be 19 before next season, disqualifying him by NJSIAA rule.

It can be a hard argument for parents to make when they are saying that they want their child to be treated like anyone else and be allowed to play, but then argue that their child isn’t like anyone else when trying to have him not be subjected to the same rules of eligibility.

grumbling that he should have never been out there.

The shame is that it all came together so late for Anthony. He wasn’t the starting kicker until Brick’s sixth game last season, so his total varsity career amounted to five games. That still was enough for the NJSIAA to decide he was too good to allow him another year, in addition to the fact that he used up his eligibility like any other athlete. On the flip side, he was able to enjoy national attention and have his moment in the spotlight with an ESPN feature, an appearance on the Today Show and more.

I’m interested to see if this is an isolated case or if there will be more on the way. Will there be more students who are clearly way behind the normal student in school because of autism, but athletically as good or better than the average student? With legislators working to ensure special needs students are not denied the same opportunities as their nonspecial needs counterparts, it’s an issue that will continue to be raised.

It’s such a tricky situation. The side of “Let the inspiring kicker with autism play” is counterbalanced by “It’s not fair to non-special needs students and opponents who could lose a game because of letting him play.” The fact that this discussion is being held is a positive sign because Anthony is showing that athletes with autism can develop to the point where they are considered competitive weapons and not just feel-good stories being inserted at the end of blowouts to make some 3pointers or score a pre-arranged touchdown.

Maybe he is the next step in the evolution of athletes with autism, particularly as placekickers in football, where the repetition and routine that can be maddening off the field for autistic athletes becomes a weapon. If the DOE upholds the NJSIAA’s decision, there is still an opportunity for Anthony to be a pioneer for athletes with autism. After all, his own kicking coach and others have said he could legitimately compete as a kicker on the Division III level in college. Maybe it’s time for him to break another barrier.
